KHRUANGBIN announce ‘First Class Tour’ – November/December 2022

by the partae March 29, 2022
written by the partae

+ special guests Kamasi Washington (Melbourne/Auckland only) & Mildlife

Tickets on sale Friday 1 April

Performing their biggest headline shows in Australia and New Zealand to date, Houston, Texas psych-funk auteurs Khruangbin will bring their First Class Tour to Fremantle, Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Auckland in November/December 2022.

Last here in 2019, the acclaimed three-piece exist in their own orbit, their legendary live show – a mixtape of surf-rock cool, dubby disco and worldly funk – held down by the steady hand of drummer Donald Ray ‘DJ’ Johnson Jr, virtuosic guitarist Mark Speer, and enigmatic bassist Laura ‘Leezy’ Lee.

Live on stage Khruangbin’s electric range is performed with impeccable style, their sound rooted in globetrotting. With three studio albums to date – debut The Universe Smiles Upon You, 2018’s Con Todo El Mundo, and 2020’s Mordechai– tracks such as ‘Dern Kala’ , ‘Maria También’ and ‘People Everywhere (Still Alive)’ have become live anthems for their many fans, no mean feat for a largely instrumental group. 2021’s Mordechai Remixes featured re-imaginings by Kadhja Bonet, Soul Clap, Quantic, Harvey Sutherland, and more.

Sonic instrumental world-builders, Khruangbin’s sound is meticulously constructed and universally adored. Praised by The New York Times, Billboard, Los Angeles Times, FADER and more, they regularly sell-out multiple nights at iconic venues worldwide – from The Greek in Los Angeles to London’s O2 Academy Brixton – possessing a live show not to be missed, as attested by two recent reviews:

‘Khruangbin treated the audience to a dazzling 20-minute encore, song after enthralling song. Nearly all audience members were either swaying or dancing the entire set. If you ever have a chance to see Khruangbin live, don’t miss it!’ – utahmagazine.com

‘Drawing inspiration from Thai funk, Jamaican reggae, Asian pop, and American Funk and R&B, Khruangbin accomplishes a global sound that any music lover can appreciate’ – melodicmag.com

Joining the bill to bring light, joy and power to the Melbourne and Auckland shows is LA tenor saxophonist and bandleader Kamasi Washington. Washington’s cinematic compositions and fearless performances have inspired a whole new audience, the dynamic Washington having worked with luminaries such as Flying Lotus, Kendrick Lamar, St Vincent, Florence + the Machine, and Herbie Hancock. His breakout albums The Epic and Harmony Of Difference are interstellar trips through a rich history of Black American music.

Bringing their kaleidoscopic sound, Melbourne’s favourite groove cosmonauts Mildlife will join the bill as main support in Fremantle and Brisbane, plus open proceedings at Sidney Myer Music Bowl. The Melbourne event is presented in partnership with ALWAYS LIVE, a new state-wide celebration of contemporary live music supported by the Victorian Government through Visit Victoria.

Tickets go on sale Friday 1 April (2pm local time) via frontiertouring.com/khruangbin. Frontier Members can access the Presale starting Wednesday 30 March (11am local time).

Don’t miss the incredible Khruangbin performing live, this Nov/Dec!

WITH SUPPORT FROM
PUNK LEGENDS
CIRCLE JERKS

Hermosa Beach punk rock band Pennywise have today announced they will be returning down under for an Australian tour in September 2022. Pennywise will be bringing with them legendary punk band Circle Jerks, who will be hitting Australia for the very first time. Tour details below.

Pennywise will be performing songs from their entire catalogue including the recently CERTIFIED ARIA GOLD selling album Straight Ahead, which debuted No. 8 on the ARIA charts (the bands highest charting album to date).

Fletcher Dragge enthuses;
“Finally Pennywise gets to come back to our home away from home, Australia!

Where the beer flows nonstop, along with the chaos. Never a dull moment on a Pennywise tour down under… only one thing could make it better than usual, and that would be coming to town with our mentors and long-time friends THE CIRCLE JERKS!!!  They are back with a vengeance!

This is gonna be an off the fucking hook nonstop party!  And we can’t wait! Get your tix, get on the booze, and get in the pit, we’re coming for you fuckers!!!!!”

Pennywise are no strangers to Australia having toured the country many times over. Most recently in 2019 on the 20th Anniversary Straight Ahead tour with sold out shows Australia wide.

Formed in the South Bay of Los Angeles—a neighbourhood with a rich punk-rock history—Pennywise began in 1988. The band went on to amass an international following with their relentless touring and a melodic, high-energy sound fusing classic punk, surf punk, and blistering hardcore. Through the years, Pennywise have solidified their place in punk history with iconic songs like “Fuck Authority,” “Alien,” and “Bro Hymn” (their timeless ode to brotherhood and departed friends).

Pennywise have released 11 albums over the last three decades, including: Pennywise (1991), Unknown Road (1993), About Time (1995), Full Circle (1997), Straight Ahead(1999), Land of the Free? (2001), From the Ashes (2003), The Fuse (2005), Reason to Believe (2008), All or Nothing (2012), and Yesterdays (2014). Resolutely working outside the margins of the mainstream, the band has emerged as an enduringly vibrant staple on the worldwide touring circuit.

Glamorous line-up for ‘Bowie Ball’ announced

by the partae March 26, 2022
written by the partae

– Kaleidoscopic experience of Bowie-influenced performers and forensically-constructed musical tributes form inaugural convention’s Bowie Ball in association with Worlds Inc. Bowie World

– Unrivalled line-up of guests, including Bowie’s closest musical confidantes, with Bowie-inspired artists and world-leading photographers

DAVID BOWIE GLAMOUR FANZINE & SOUND CITY PRESENT
DAVID BOWIE WORLD FAN CONVENTION, FRI 17 – SUN 19 JUNE 2022
Limited remaining tickets available via https://bowieconvention.com

No less understated than Ziggy Stardust himself or lacking any of the charismatic camp of Scary Monsters-era Bowie, the line-up for the hotly-anticipated, unashamedly celebratory Bowie Ball in association with Worlds Inc. Bowie World, at the first ever David Bowie World Fan Convention has been announced. The elaborate, carefully-curated centrepiece of the first fan-gathering of its kind takes place at Liverpool’s Mountford Hall during the city-wide weekend events spanning Fri 17 – Sun 19 June 2022.

With fans and guests flying in from all corners of the globe and each encouraged to outdo each other in the costume-stakes, the chance to dress up and freak out to the sights and sounds associated with Bowie for one incredible night of reverie and revelry at the Bowie Ball will see nothing held back. Keeping the ball bouncing will be just-announced compere Jonny Woo, the Bowie-classic-singing drag artist and owner of world-famous, London LGBTQ+ venue The Glory, plus a founding member of Glastonbury’s drag scene at NYC Downlow.

Appropriately taking the non-literal route to paying tribute to the 20th Century’s most unconventional pop star, the convention welcomes hula-hoop artist Natasha Moonshine, dancer and performance artist Joshua Hubbard, never-understated performance artist Pretentious Dross and Liverpool’s incomparably exhilarating Eat Me Club to set an impossibly glamorous scene. The layers of immaculately-applied make-up will dazzle in equal measure to the layers of Bowie’s chameleonic artistry referenced in each, specially-devised performance.

Joining in the celebrations, Bowie World is announced as sponsor of the centrepiece Bowie Ball. Worlds Inc. (OTCQB: WDDD) worked directly with Bowie himself and Bowie’s son, Duncan Jones, to create the first ever celebrity virtual reality space in 1998, the same year as Bowienet. Designed by Bowie as an online space where fans and Bowie could interact with each other and experience Bowie’s art and music, it is still live today in its original format and is the oldest continuously running metaverse.   Worlds Inc and Bowie World will soon announce a new initiative to coincide with the convention, as well as collaborate on event designs, projections and exclusive social media content.

“In honour of David’s 75th birthday and the 50th anniversary of Ziggy Stardust, we are excited to sponsor the Bowie Ball and place a spotlight on how David was such a visionary in furthering music and fan engagement via technology,” says Thom Kidrin, CEO of World’s Inc. and Bowie World co-creator.  “In this milestone year we will introduce initiatives to allow fans to utilise today’s advanced technology (which David would certainly be embracing) to experience and capture David’s excitement and foresight, just as he was helping to shape the future of the music and entertainment industry over 20 years ago.”

Sensitively stewarded by the partnership of Liverpool’s Sound City annual music festival and the passion behind the best-selling David Bowie Glamour fanzine, hand-picked musical accompaniments are also confirmed, first with internationally-touring, career-spanning, six-strong tribute experience, Rebel Heroes. Sliding in alongside the live and loud music are party-starting specialist DJs TheMenWhoFell2Earth and Sonic Yootha, both digging deep into the much-missed musical hero’s back-catalogue, the hits of associated artists and tasty, Bowie-related tangents to tempt ticket-holders onto the dancefloor.

Amongst the most striking additions to the convention line-up away from the glitter of the ballroom is Italian ceramic artist Maria Primolan and her sculptures of Bowie’s instantly-recognisable likenesses during distinct periods of his shape-shifting career. Using a breadth of sculptural and ceramic-firing methods, Primolan’s practice has been devoted to Bowie’s image. Primolan will visit Liverpool to show her latest work, from delicately coloured panels detailing Bowie’s powder-faced, Ashes to Ashes clown persona to 3D busts of the head-of-curls and beret-clad The Man Who Sold The World-era.  Also exhibiting will be painter Shaun Lowndes whose vivid, comic-book surrealism has earned critical and public acclaim.

Amongst those who knew David Bowie, few knew him on as many levels as drummer John Cambridge, whose attendance at the convention has been confirmed. Whilst being on hand at key life events, including Bowie passing his driving test, it was also on the musical front, introducing Bowie to Spiders From Mars guitar legend Mick Ronson and drumming on 1969’s Space Oddity album, that Cambridge made huge contributions. He visits Liverpool amongst an enviable line-up of authors after publishing his own autobiography, Bowie, Cambo and All The Hype.

Many of the most influential image-makers from throughout Bowie’s career will be present, in person or through their iconic images, over the weekend. Just added is Tim Bret-Day, whose elaborate work across fashion and music included the artwork and promotional imagery for Bowie’s 1999 album …hours. The range of shots taken included an inner-sleeve shot that required a dummy of Bowie himself to be produced before being set alight. Bret-Day will arrive with limited edition prints and answers to fans’ questions.

After it was announced last year that Liverpool, UK would be host to the first globally-significant fan convention of its kind, the high-profile names first revealed to be in attendance included guitarist, Carlos Alomar and his wife, singer with both Bowie and Chic, Robin Clark; bassist, Gail Ann Dorsey and the last surviving Spider From Mars, drummer Woody Woodmansey. Having collaborated on Bowie’s final album, Blackstar, saxophonist Donny McCaslin attends with special perspectives on the icon’s creative drive as time appeared to be running out.

Represented amongst the great Bowie image makers is Brian Duffy of the Aladdin Sane lightning flash fame, via The Duffy Archive. As Bowie’s official photographer on his 1983 Serious Moonlight world tour, just one of his official engagements with the artist and friend, Denis O’Regan appears in Liverpool having witnessed many sides of the man at work and play. Philippe Auliac’s 30-plus year professional and personal relationship with Bowie from behind-the-lens, starting in 1976, will also be represented by Auliac in-person and numerous famous and rarely-seen examples of his work.

Working with Bowie from 2002’s Heathen album, through the closely-guarded, surprise release of 2013’s The Next Day and onto the intricately packaged final album Blackstar in 2016, graphic designer Jonathan Barnbrook will talk about what it took to make Bowie’s visual ideas a reality. Amongst the influential authors to have added their words to exploring the enigma, author of The Complete David Bowie, Nicholas Pegg and writer of Any Day Now: David Bowie The London Years (1947-1974) Kevin Cann are on hand to take fans into the depths of the artist’s professional life over half a century. Cann also worked as a creative assistant on Bowie’s first solo art exhibition, held in Cork Street, London in 1995.

The David Bowie World Fan Convention brings David Bowie’s story back to Liverpool, a city which the artist played numerous times at different stages of his career, starting on Sat 8 April 1967 with The Riot Squad, performing on board the famous Royal Iris, a ferry that ran regular music cruises up the River Mersey. Bowie’s last appearance in Liverpool was on Sat 2 Aug 1997, with the arena-filling icon performing for a relatively intimate crowd of 2,000 people at the Royal Court Theatre.

Esteemed dance music stars Bag Raiders, today return with their first new music in three years, the wistful ‘UR Heart‘. With the release comes the announcement of their new label venture, Broken Head Records. LISTEN + WATCH HERE.

The project of Jack Glass and Chris Stracey, as Bag Raiders their latest release sees the duo pivot from the joyful hedonism of their back catalogue to serve a dexterous and sweeping cut of melancholic exhilaration. Channelling the percussive rapture of Bicep and Caribou, ‘UR Heart‘ is heavy with looming subs, pitched up, down and around vocal samples and arpeggiating bass. Through its refrains “I’ve been loving you” and “Don’t you leave me this way,” are a near-celestial call to action, ‘UR Heart‘ is inspired by the shared emotions and collective release forged across dancefloor communities. Be it in the vein of long-lost love, newfound friendships or an internal moment of realisation, Bag Raiders cater to all on ‘UR Heart‘.

Speaking to the release, the duo share “This is the first in a long line of new material. It’s been super refreshing for us to turn our gaze squarely back on the dance floor and make music that doesn’t overthink it and just aims to get the legs moving and the blood pumping.”

With their eyes firmly set on the future, Bag Raiders are elated to announce their new label, Broken Head Records. Born from distinctly simple origins, freedom, fun and community lie at the core of the label’s ethos. Jack shares “It’s about freedom, more freedom, less rules and more fun.” Through Broken Head Records, the two tease a steady stream of club-based music. “It’s really helped us to fall in love with music again” Chris mentions with excitement. “We started in clubs and this new chapter is all about DJ sets, sweaty clubs and festivals.”

Not many artists have had an immense effect on the youth of today quite like Bag Raiders. Whether that be sound-tracking many a sweaty night on a dancefloor, sing-a-longs at some of the biggest festivals in the world, or even becoming the anthem to one of the most iconic moments in the internet’s history, the electronic duo have done it all; and are ready for more. Their place as stalwarts in the dance community for over a decade, comes after releasing a slew of cult-favourite singles and signing to dance-powerhouse Modular Records, which saw the duo release their debut self-titled record in 2011.

The record debuted at #7 on the ARIA Charts and snagged them a ‘Best Dance Release‘ nomination at that year’s ARIA Awards. A part of that record was the single ‘Shooting Stars‘ which has amassed over 4 billion streams online, clocked over 32 Platinum or Gold plaques worldwide and a cultural impact beyond anyone’s expectations. Following the success of their debut, 2019’s Horizons further solidified Bag Raiders as the benchmark for electronic pop music not only in so-called Australia but around the world. With their next chapter upon us, Bag Raiders are hungrier, more creative and ecstatic about what will come next.

‘UR Heart‘ is out now, buy/stream it here.

Fiery psych-rock outfit The Lazy Eyes today share the latest offering from their debut album SongBook (out April 22), by way of their latest single, the charming ‘Starting Over‘. LISTEN + WATCH HERE.

With rhythmic piano, choral harmonies, swirling guitars and jangling harpsichord, ‘Starting Over‘ is a vivacious single that continues to prove the band’s ability to make the “old”, exciting and brand new. Channelling a hybrid of the washed-out choral harmonies of Mild High Club with the wavy soft rock of Connan Mockasin and the catchy piano-led jams of Drugdealer, The Lazy Eyes illustrate no stone unturned into their encyclopedia of inspiration, keeping us guessing on which yellow brick road they’ll lead us down next.

Built from a jam that turned into a Garage Band demo, the song is emblematic of The Lazy Eyes’ future sound – all baroque flourish and striking melody. Inadvertently charting the band’s fast-changing sound, Itay sings “Times are changing, people stranger than before, who’d have thought?” In their own words, the band explain, “This song was written back in our high school days like the other songs are on the album. I remember having an inkling for the verse on acoustic guitar and thinking “meh” so I just left it be. After a while though, the song came back to me after jamming on the piano. I fleshed it out (admittedly with some pretty cringey lyrics back then) and whipped up a GarageBand demo for the boys. After that, we put it on Soundcloud and it was building some traction… soon after we wiped everything in the search for a new start, you could say we were ‘Starting Over’.”

Visually, ‘Starting Over‘ sees the band return to their collaboration with Jesse Taylor Smith, who directed ‘Where’s My Brain???‘ and ‘Nobody Taught Me‘. Speaking to the creative behind ‘Starting Over‘, Jesse shares “I was inspired by 80’s portrayals of Ancient Rome and wanted to explore the concept of starting over using repetition and rhythm. The band were super receptive to my idea so I smeared a heap of Vaseline on my lenses, fired up a fog machine and prepared to start again and again and again.” For The Lazy Eyes, it was a no-brainer.

Through their upcoming debut album SongBook, the band pulls together each incremental breakthrough of their career thus far, including key releases from their first two EPs, ‘Where’s My Brain???‘, ‘Tangerine‘ and ‘Cheesy Love Song‘, alongside new tracks. Through ‘Fuzz Jam‘, The Lazy Eyes reached a fever pitch, breaking triple j as the station’s #1 Most Played Song upon release. Mainstream praise has continued to follow The Lazy Eyes every step, from Lauren Laverne as the Spotlight Artist on 6 Music and #24 on the Shazam charts, playlisting on BBC 6 Music‘s A List and continued acclaim from NME, SPIN, Face Melts, KCRW, Flood, Unearthed, RAGE, 2SER amongst many others globally.

Surveying the first years of The Lazy Eyes‘ existence as a band, SongBook emits youthful, creative exuberance, the sound of a band revelling in their own indulgences, influences and self-discovery, refracting formative touchstones through a contemporary lens in a process of coming into their own. The Lazy Eyes debut is a world unto itself, where swirling, constantly mutating tonal and textural choices open up rich, previously unexplored corners. Like every good fantasy world, it abides by its own logic – suddenly you’re in a garden in full blossom, and you didn’t even notice; you’ve walked a mile without taking a single step and earworms zip zorp past. Step inside, but be warned: Once you’re in The Lazy Eyes‘ world, you might not want to leave any time soon.

Teether and Don Glori drop Meadow artist collaboration ‘Dizzy’ on the eve of festival number eight

by the partae March 25, 2022
written by the partae

In anticipation of its eighth festival instalment in 2022, Meadow is thrilled to welcome in a new release courtesy of 2022 performing artists Teether and Don Glori, titled ‘Dizzy’. Out just in time for the festival gates to open this afternoon, the single is a cruisey hip hop number that is bound to make a last minute appearance on many a road trip playlist as punters make the scenic trip down to The Otways for Meadow 8.

Carefully considered compositions that facilitate heavy doses of improvisation, Don Glori’s music reflects a deep fascination in jazz, house and Brazilian music, tied together by his inimitable spirit and dedication to making it groove. Teaming up with rapper and avid collaborator, Teether—known for his recent future-focussed project with Kuya Neil, performing in duo form at Meadow this year—‘Dizzy’ is testament to the community spirit that Meadow embodies, and a showcase of the creativity and innovation of Australia’s tight knit music scene.

Released through Chapter Music, the self-produced collaboration was brought to life at Box Hill Institute’s Sing Sing East studios with engineer Tom Iansek (Big Scary, #1 Dads, No Mono), mixed by Lewis Moody and mastered by Corey Kikos.

Meadow prides itself on its inward-looking, outward-thinking localised offerings, with everything from the music, the food and drink stalls, film screenings, tree-planting program and volunteers all hand picked and carefully curated to support and celebrate Australian artists, voices, initiatives and businesses. Do not miss your chance to catch these two powerhouse acts performing live from the Bambra Bowl from Friday 25 – Sunday 27 March alongside Meadow headliners Methyl Ethel, Tropical Fuck Storm, Camp Cope and a stacked all-Australian bill. Final release tickets and glamping tents are now moving quick. Run, don’t walk.

COURTNEY BARNETT Announces Here And There A touring festival

“I got lost somewhere between Here And There, I’m not sure what  the town was called”
– ‘Scotty Says’ – Courtney Barnett (2012)

Courtney Barnett today announces Here And There – a boutique touring festival with a rotating line-up featuring many of the most exciting songwriters in music today. This August and September, Barnett will take the one-day, one-stage festival to 15 locations around North America, each city with an extraordinary and unique line-up.

Joining Barnett at various points on the line-up will be Alvvays, Arooj Aftab, Bartees Strange, Bedouine, Caroline Rose, Chicano Batman, Ethel Cain, Faye Webster, Fred Armisen, Hana Vu, Indigo De Souza, Japanese Breakfast, Julia Jacklin, Leith Ross, Lido Pimienta, Lucy Dacus, Men I Trust, Quinn Christopherson, Sleater-Kinney, Snail Mail, The Beths, Waxahatchee, and Wet Leg. A full city-by-city summary can be found below.

Barnett says: “When I was a kid I would make mix-tapes and dream up my own festivals, I’d even design the t-shirts and pair up musicians for iconic collaborations. I’d listen to the mix-tape and pretend it was the live recording of a concert, all my favorite artists on stage together. 10 years ago I wrote this lyric: “I got lost somewhere between here and there, I’m not sure what the town was called”. Whether that was meant to be interpreted as a geographical, emotional or philosophical journey, I thought it was the perfect title for my roaming festival.

This concept was something that remained floating in the back of my mind when I started playing music. Here And There feels like a natural culmination of energy after years of touring, and ten years of  working on my label Milk! Records. It’s something I’ve been forever daydreaming about, and part of an always evolving project to share spaces and build new platforms for art and artists that I believe in.

It’s always been important to me to share the stage with people that I admire and artists that inspire me, which is why I’m so excited and grateful to announce this amazing lineup.”

When Courtney Barnett first started playing shows she drove vast distances through the Australian bushland and desert, passing occasionally through small towns and stopping at gas-stations and fast-food outlets. Eventually she’d arrive at one of Australia’s sprawling cities, unpack the car, and sing. She wrote a lot of songs about those experiences, some which appear on her early EPs and debut album. Songs like ‘Dead Fox’, ‘Scotty Says’ and ‘Out Of the Woodwork’.

After the success of her early EPs in Australia, Barnett shifted focus to playing shows in North America and Europe. Each place was new to her, without an identity formed by personal experience. She was here, then a few days later she’d be there. Destinations in those days were just names on a map. But over the past decade these nameless and faceless places revealed themselves to be the beloved homes of communities, venues, theaters and amphitheaters with thriving musical cultures and incredible audiences.

Here And There is a concept partially born of Barnett’s love of curation. Barnett has owned a label (Milk! Records) for a decade now – releasing the music of artists from her home town of Melbourne, Australia as well a few brilliant US-based friends she’s made along the way (Sleater-Kinney, Chastity Belt, Hand Habits amongst others), leveraging her deep connection with her audience to champion the music of others that she admires.

The pre-sale begins on Tuesday, March 29 at 10am local time – fans can sign up for access at hereandtherefest.com. The first 100 people in each market to register get an exclusive, unique Flexi disc. General public tickets go on-sale Friday, April 1 at 10AM local time.

Courtney is partnering with Plus1 to donate $1/ticket to The Ally Coalition and their work supporting LGBTQ Youth across the country. For more info visit hereandtherefest.com.

“The prolific Melbourne duo level up on new album Barnyard”
NME

“Everything’s looking good for Good Morning”
Billboard

“The music has the easiness you feel looking out at the ocean”
Broadsheet

“Chill and organic indie rock, but there are some slight stylistic differences
due to each member taking lead vocals on some Lennon-McCartney shit…”

Stereogum

“Country feels like the culmination of everything that Good Morning
have spent their almost-decade together working towards”

Rolling Stone

“The Australians are coming out in full force”
Paste Magazine

“These are warm, inviting songs made for long drives on sunny afternoons”
Frankie Magazine

“Gloriously catchy dessert rock”
Pilerats

Good Morning return today, with their annual two-track single release, ‘Out To Pasture / Misery‘ alongside the announcement of the upcoming re-issue of their back catalogue on vinyl. LISTEN + PRE-ORDER HERE.

Following their recent Barnyard LP, ‘Out To Pasture / Misery‘  arrives as the result of endless studio time for Good Morning, the result of a refined studio schedule that has seen the band consistently write and record five days a week. With the freedom to craft multi-layered recordings, Liam Parsons and Stefan Blair indulge in experimentation and new firsts, namely Stefan‘s attempt at writing a string arrangement, and the addition of a rollicking banjo to the Good Morning fold. Plus the studio appearance of a parent or two, with Glenn Blair appearing on horns.

In Liam‘s words, ‘Misery‘ was written when “I felt like yelling, and when we recorded it I still felt like yelling. The low key meeting the high is where I live most the time.” ‘Out To Pasture‘ features Naarm / Melbourne based violinist Chloe Sanger, who Stefan reveals “was able to take my vague instructions and turn them into something beautiful which was cool to hear. I also had a nice family day in the studio recording the horns so that was nice too. I’m not saying I’d always like to record with my parents, but that day was a good time. Ultimately I’m just making fun of myself about commodifying my darker thoughts through music. I know that I connect with a lot of darker music, and I know it has it’s place in the world, but it’s hard not to feel like it’s super conceited and dumb at times too.”

To celebrate the two-track, Good Morning have announced a long-awaited reissue of their back catalogue onto vinyl for the first time in two years. In their decade-long tenure, Good Morning have released six records of varying sound and length: Shawcross (2014), Glory (2016), Prize // Reward (2018), The Option (2019), Basketball Breakups (2019), and their latest Barnyard (2021). Now, following feverish anticipation, each album will be made available on vinyl once again via Polyvinyl on May 27. Most significant are the pressings include their debut LP Shawcross (available for the first time ever),  which lives on as a classic in the minds of many fans for its sun-dappled, loose, elegiac indie-pop across the yearning ‘Warned You‘, ‘Don’t Come Home Today‘ and ‘Once You Know‘.

Joining Shawcross includes Glory, which dives into slightly darker and weirder territories of tone and sound rendered with ruthlessly catchy hooks; and Prize // Reward, the only album by Good Morning to be recorded over an extended period of time as opposed to their short, sharp stints of recording. It’s a record looser in vision and more chaotic through its sonic journey, from the snappy ‘$10‘ to wishful ‘Escalator‘. Through The Option and Basketball Breakups, Liam and Stefan re-captured the pleasure and excitement of their best friend-ship through music. Albeit short in delivery with songs that average a 2-minute length, both make-up for time with immediately resonant tracks that command repeated listens, be-it the charmant ‘Sub‘, reverb flecked ‘You Up?‘, or grungey ‘Best Supporting Actor‘. Pre-order for Good Morning‘s discography on vinyl is available now – until stocks last.

On top of their stacked United States tour this April/May, Good Morning have also announced a string of dates across the United Kingdom in June. SEE ALL TOUR DATES BELOW.

Velvet Bloom lifts the veil on the breathtaking aesthetics of ‘Glimmer’

by the partae March 23, 2022
written by the partae

“‘Glimmer’ might be their most radiant release so far – loaded with their signature soulful grooves, intoxicating instrumentation and frontwoman Maddy Herbert’s velvety voice.”
– James Lynch, Trouble Juice

“‘Glimmer’ is a wonder of a track. The musicianship is almost intimidating, from the controlled smokey croon of front woman Maddy Herbert, through to the layers of jazz influences that are crammed under a soulful blanket. The waltz turn-around at the half-way mark is the fairy dust on an already smooth groove. Everything is restrained, within reason, with the listener knowing full well that any one of these musicians could break the stratosphere with a solo, but that’s the kicker. None of them do. They serve the song, and it is so much better for it.” – The Point

Earlier this month, Melbourne based soul outfit Velvet Bloom dropped their steamy heartwarmer ‘Glimmer’ sharing another take from their anticipated debut body of work just around the corner. Now, the enthralling collective are revealing the gorgeous visuals to the new single and EP namesake with a collaborative video accompaniment, showcasing some of Australia’s finest up-and-coming creatives. In celebration of the release, Velvet Bloom are thrilled to announce an upcoming run of Glimmer EP tour dates, hitting the road for six shows up the East Coast next month in the wake of the EP’s release on Friday 8 April via Cousin Will Records.

Co-directed by Velvet Bloom frontwoman Maddy Herbert, bassist Anthony Rennick and multidisciplinary video artist Rhys Newling, the ‘Glimmer’ video features cameos from some familiar faces of the Melbourne music scene including artists, record store owners, DJs and more. The visuals are absolutely stunning, with every aesthetic element from set design to costuming and beyond honing in on the broader artistic community in the same familial spirit that the song itself embodies. Featuring corsets by The Daisy Lane, jacket by Cheeky The Label, and flower arrangements by frontwoman, stylist and creative tour de force Maddy Herbert with support from Tom & Daisy, the video is an all encompassing visual and aural delight and testament to Velvet Bloom’s far reaching artistic excellence.

“We wanted to create something super special for this music video and I had a very specific vision in terms of aesthetics. After speaking to Rennick about the intention of the song and what it meant to me lyrically, the idea for the video came together quite quickly. We wanted to use mirrors to communicate how the people who we have the deepest admiration for are woven into the making of us as individuals. This was also the reason behind the family-portrait style videos of people who have played a huge role in supporting our journey! I love my community and feel extremely blessed to be surrounded by such incredible people. ‘Glimmer’ is an ode to my people.” – Maddy Herbert, Velvet Bloom

The five piece of Maddy Herbert, Alex Marko, Anthony Rennick, Nic Morton and Miguel Hutton will be heading back to the live stage for a run of East Coast shows kicking off this April hitting up Forster, Brisbane, Sydney, Beechworth, Adelaide and Melbourne, with Herbert also playing solo in Canberra. Do not miss your chance to catch this captivating live act on the rise when they roll into a town near you.

Europe’s newest and most cultured underground festival announces another irresistible list of names including Tobi Neumann, Paco Osuna, Gene on Earth, East End Dubs, Boris Werner, Butch, Joey Daniel, Josh Baker, Andy Baxter, Michel Cleis, Ilario Alicante, Jamie Roy and many more on top of the first wave such as Ricardo Villalobos, Cristi Cons, Seth Troxler, Rhadoo, Raresh, Priku and tens more. They are amongst the 90 artists who play the extended festival from Wednesday 1st – Monday 6th June in a gorgeously natural and uncommercialised corner of Europe on the Albanian Riviera. Head to unumfestival.com for full details and ticket info.
UNUM is a close-knit, tastefully curated musical hideaway between sweet smelling pine forests, sweeping sun kissed beaches and set against a dramatic mountainous backdrop. The music plays out over three very different stages all with their own unique look and sound and the most iconic of them all is the Pines Stage, where DJs play 24 hours a day.
That means dancers are treated to spine-tingling sunset sessions as the sun fades away between the trees, and then epic sunrises as the pines are backlit by a glorious ball of fire to start a new day. This makes it one of the most special and atmospheric places to party in all of Europe for those who like classy house and techno.
And there is plenty of that once again in this third year with tasteful hosts including After Caposile, Deset, Half Baked, Outcast, Secret Society, Trommel, Watermelon, You & Me and Zone who will all bring their own know-how and seductive sounds.
The latest wave of names to be playing include techno mainstays Tobi Neumann and Paco Osuna, red hot new school house, brakes and electro innovator Gene on Earth plus tech house titans from across Europe including East End Dubs, Boris Werner, Butch, Joey Daniel, Josh Baker, Andy Baxter, Ilario Alicante, Jamie Roy and many more.
The scene is now set for what will once again be the most boutique and music-centric house and techno gathering in a truly blissful location.

PUP ANNOUNCE SPLENDOUR SIDESHOWS + BRAND NEW TRACK ‘TOTALLY FINE’

by the partae March 23, 2022
written by the partae

THE UNRAVELING OF PUPTHEBAND out April 1 on Little Dipper / Cooking Vinyl Australia

Today Toronto punk heroes PUP are delighted to reveal Splendour In The Grass sideshows in Adelaide, Sydney and Melbourne alongside the release of new track and video ‘Totally Fine’. The track is taken from the ambitious and aptly titled fourth album, THE UNRAVELING OF PUPTHEBAND, out April 1.

Accompanied by one of the Greatest Music Videos Of All Time™, Totally Fine is a hilariously self-lacerating track with an undeniable chorus that offers plenty of opportunities to open up the pit. The track features Mel from Casper Skulls on vocals, with Sarah from Illuminati Hotties, Kathryn from NOBRO and Erik from Remo Drive on the gang vocals.

Says vocalist Stefan, “We wrote ‘Totally Fine’ after a long creative drought. We all agreed to take a break from PUP during lockdown, to take some time to deal with our mental health and get some space from each other…The drumming on this song still blows our minds. It’s so manic and wild and makes the song feel like it’s about to fall apart at any moment, which is kinda like how it feels to be in PUP.”

PUP will hit three capital cities prior to their July 23 performance at Splendour In The Grass this winter. Renown for their impossibly energetic performances and raucous singalongs, the return of PUP to our shores after such a lengthy absence cannot come soon enough.

The band perhaps put it best; ‘Thank Fucking God’.

Dates:
19 July – The Gov, Adelaide
21 July – The Croxton, Melbourne
22 July – Factory Theatre, Sydney
23 July- Splendour In The Grass, North Byron Parklands

Presale On Sale – Thursday 24th March 12:30pm AEDT
General On Sale – Friday 25th March 12:30pm AEDT

ABOUT PUP

PUP released Morbid Stuff in 2019 to critical acclaim, earning a triple j feature album, countless year-end nods from the likes of Pitchfork and NPR, their late-night debut on Late Night With Seth Meyers, the JUNO award for Alternative Album of The Year, the short list for the Polaris Music Prize, and sold-out shows across the globe. They then greeted 2020 with the aptly titled EP, This Place Sucks Ass, and the live album Live at The Electric Ballroom, the proceeds of which earned almost $30k for Critical Resistance + Breakaway Addiction Services in Toronto.

It’s time to start perfecting that hidden talent…because Buskers by the Lake is back. The three-day family friendly extravaganza will be returning to the Sunshine Coast from Friday 19 to Sunday 21 of August 2022. Today, organisers put out the call for applications to perform at the iconic annual busking festival.

Performers of all ages, talents and specialties are invited to apply to join the curated collection of buskers. Whether it’s juggling with watermelons, dancing poodles, human scarecrows or absolutely anything in between…applications to perform at Buskers by the Lake are open to everyone HERE.

Step into this year’s ‘FANTASYLAND’ and experience the mystical and magical talents of the world’s most fantastical buskers. After its triumphant debut at its new home along the picturesque Lake Kawana, the multi-award winning Buskers by the Lake will be once again wowing crowds along the waterside. Music lovers will also have the chance to catch top singer-songwriters go head to head as the prestigious Battle of the Buskers, previously won by Aussie fave Tones and I, kicks off the festivities. As if that wasn’t enough, ticketed sideshows and nightly after parties are set to delight. Boasting an entirely new and wildly diverse lineup, the festival is also sporting a fresh new date that will allow patrons and performers alike to enjoy the fresh breeze and warm sun of late winter.

Event Director, Cindy Jensen, is already busy building a thrilling lineup for this year’s festival and is excited that eased-restrictions and open borders will once again allow performers from all over the globe to join in on the fun. “We’re coming back bolder and more daring in 2022 and can’t wait to have our travelling performers and fans back, enjoying the festivities in our new Sunny Coast home”.

Sunshine Coast Portfolio Councillor Jason O’Pray says ‘The winter spectacular Buskers by the Lake is a fantastic addition to our diverse events calendar that showcases our region as an arts and culture destination. With ambitious growth plans to be a renowned international busking festival, this grass-roots event has real potential to evolve after its debut in 2021. The festival is yet to demonstrate its full potential in the region and I’m optimistic that more favourable travel and tourism conditions will see the event grow in year two.”

Got a hidden talent, party trick or special skill to share with the world? There’s no talent too wild, weird or wonderful.

Earthwalker and UNFD present a film by In Hearts Wake
GREEN IS THE NEW BLACK
A Documentary About the Music Industry and the Environment
greenisthenewblack.film
Today, Australian heavy music act In Hearts Wake is releasing the official trailer for their feature length documentary GREEN IS THE NEW BLACK alongside the announcement of Australian and international screening dates across Earth Week 2022 this April.

Conceived during the catastrophic bush fires of early 2020, filmed during the global pandemic and released as unprecedented floods have devastated the East coast of Australia, Green Is The New Black holds a mirror up to the music industry and its relationship to the environment.

PLAY/WATCH

Green Is The New Black chronicles the making of In Hearts Wake’s 100% carbon offset 2020 album Kaliyuga and their journey to become a certified Carbon Neutral Organisation but it’s more than a film about one band and one album. As In Hearts Wake examine their processes and search for more environmentally sustainable options, inspiring new possibilities for an entire industry begin to emerge.

Through conversations with creatives, experts and professionals including Damon Gameau (2040, That Sugar Film), Tamara Smith (Greens Member for Parliament), AY Young (United Nations Young Leader), Jessica Ducrou (Splendour in the Grass Festival Co-founder), Heidi Lennfer (FEAT Artists) and Luke Logemann (UNFD Records), In Hearts Wake uncover unsettling truths, face human adversity and discover inspiring solutions for a new earth-aligned way forward.

Green Is The New Black will screen at Bangalow Film Festival on April 12, with 100% of ticket sales to be donated to local charities directly assisting the Northern Rivers flood recovery.

Kicking off in Earth Week, Green Is The New Black will then screen at Palace Cinemas around Australia as well as special screenings in Los Angeles, Toronto and London.

Formed in Byron Bay in 2006, In Hearts Wake are one of Australia’s leading heavy music acts. Their fiercely loyal following has been forged from relentless world touring, passionate ecological advocacy and hard-hitting, melodic-driven music. The band have received four top-5 records, earned an ARIA nomination for Best Hard Rock album, 110 million digital streams and over 100,000 records sold worldwide. They are the only known band to be registered as a Carbon Neutral Organisation.
“When we first started this band, we just wanted to tour the world and play music, but the further we travelled the more it hit home. We were unintentionally endangering our own future. The world we knew was changing fast and we realised we had to change with it.” Jake Taylor, vocalist In Hearts Wake / Producer and Co-Director Green Is The New Black.

DONATE NOW AND WATCH TALLY GROW
Two weeks ago, the Northern Rivers of NSW and Southeast QLD were devastated by a natural disaster of unimaginable magnitude and severity.

Today Secret Sounds is announcing a range of fundraising initiatives to assist with recovery across the region, with a target of raising $1 million in one month and a commitment that 100% of money raised will go directly to flood affected communities.

“I live in this region” said Secret Sounds Co-CEO Paul Piticco. “My nearest town is Murwillumbah and it has been devastated. Local schools, friends’ homes and businesses, lives and livelihoods all just swept away by the floodwater.  This story is repeated in Lismore, Ballina, Mullumbimby, Coraki, Brisbane and many other communities.  The recovery, physically and especially mentally, is going to take a long time and will need lots of support so I am very pleased Lifeline is providing targeted and specialised assistance for everyone that has been affected.   It has been an extremely tough two years for the music business but we are still here and still banding together to help our communities. Please join us. Give generously, buy a ticket, buy a shirt, make a bid and support however you can to get these families and towns back on track.”

“This is deeply personal for us. Many of our team live and operate businesses in the region and some of them have been directly impacted. We have also run our events in the area for decades. We are part of this community and we’re heartbroken to see the pain that’s being felt right across the region” said Jessica Ducrou, Co-CEO of Secret Sounds.

Splendour in the Grass and Falls Festival Byron have kicked off the fundraising with a $100K donation each ($200K in total). Bank of Queensland has also jumped on board as a key sponsor to help make the concerts happen.

Martine Jager, Bank of Queensland’s Group Executive Retail Banking said “From Gympie to Lismore, and many areas throughout Queensland and NSW, we’ve seen the devastation the floods have had on our people, customers and their local communities. We’re so pleased we could come together and help those who have been impacted, while also supporting the music industry which itself has faced many challenges from the pandemic. We’re proud of this partnership so let’s all do what we can to get onboard, buy a ticket and support Aussie music and communities.”

Secret Sounds would also like to thank Wanderlust, Jack Daniel’s, Byron Bay Brewery, Smirnoff and Red Bull who have also jumped on to assist with this campaign.

From fundraiser gigs and limited-edition merch items to auctions, there’s a range of ways the public can get involved to help the cause.

RECIPIENT ORGANISATIONS
All money raised through Secret Sounds Flood Aid campaign will be distributed between four key organisations to provide direct assistance where it is needed. Every cent of every dollar raised will go directly to the community. All recipient organisations have made this commitment.

LIFELINE will provide tailored face to face and digital psychological first aid for affected communities including counselling, information resources for individuals, crisis helplines and Lifeline text. These services are being specifically created for these communities and for this situation.

Lifeline CEO Colin Seery said that the organisation’s staff and volunteers have been working on the ground tirelessly to support local people.

“Lifeline is at the very heart of the communities that have been hardest hit so we have a clear picture of just how devastating these floods have been for individuals and families.”

“The funds raised from the Secret Sounds initiatives will enable us to continue to extend and tailor Lifeline services and to help communities reach a point where they regain sustainability and resilience.”

GIVIT is a national donation platform managing donations of items, services and funds for people impacted by floods across parts of Queensland and New South Wales. GIVIT works directly with councils, outreach teams, charities and community groups in impacted areas to identify exactly what’s needed to make sure people get what they need, when they need it.

The local newspaper of the Bundjalung region, KOORI MAIL is wholly owned by five Bundjalung Aboriginal community organisations. These regions have been severely flood impacted and fundraising will directly support these communities.

The well-established Byron Community Centre has partnered with regional philanthropic body, NORTHERN RIVERS COMMUNITY FOUNDATION, to support a community led flood recovery. Funds will be distributed to grass roots community organisations throughout the Northern Rivers Region, getting help to communities when and where they need it.

It is impossible to overstate the impact of the flooding that hit Northern NSW and Southeast QLD a fortnight ago. All previous records were smashed by metres. Roads and bridges were washed away. Schools were destroyed. Thousands of homes were inundated, with water levels in Lismore exceeding a previously unfathomable 14 metres. Residents climbed into ceiling cavities to escape the floodwaters or onto rooftops in hope of being rescued by civilians in tinnies.

Huge landslides moved houses down mountains in the hills behind Mullumbimby, and now scar the Northern NSW hinterland. Heroic community members trekked through the bush, across raging torrents and waist high mud to rescue the isolated and injured. They carried in generators, fuel, supplies, even a satellite dish and radios and they encountered scenes that no civilian volunteer should ever have to witness.

Further south in Woodburn and Coraki the floodwater has only just subsided and a massive clean-up effort is underway in that devastated region.

Thousands of homes are now uninhabitable. The families who lived in them are facing an uncertain future. Northern NSW was already facing a housing crisis and the situation is now critical. Many have also lost their businesses or income for the foreseeable future.

Whether directly affected by flooding or volunteering for rescue and clean up, this disaster has been traumatic for the entire community and has taken a huge emotional toll on everyone in its path.

You support, to help raise as much money as possible for devastated communities, is much appreciated!
