After an incredible national tour in 2023, Ministry of Sound are journeying back to the underground this August with their biggest tour yet. Presented over two specially curated sessions (90s & 00s) across 7 cities, Testament celebrates the golden era of clubbing, taking over venues, clubs and warehouse spaces where dance music fuelled generations of unity on the dancefloor.

From August 30 – Sep 8, 202 TESTAMENT reignites a passion for vibrant late-night cities and club cultures across the country. Returning to some of our most loved dancefloors, the 2024 tour sees the addition of some exciting new spaces, including the truly epic White Bay Power Station, which is opening its doors for the first time to a large-scale music event of this kind, Felons Barrel Hall for Brisbane, a day session at The Court in Perth and an additional tour stop to the Sunshine Coast – along with The Timberyard [Melbourne], The Studio [Auckland], Miami Marketta [Gold Coast].

With an incredible lineup of the most significant global names of the era, Testament dives deep into the music, the people, the places & the crews who made the 90s & 00s such an iconic era for all of us who know what ‘proper clubbing’ really means.

From Australia’s acid house infancy to the many reinventions of rave through the 90s and the peak of 00s nightlife, Ministry of Sound will be showcasing an iconic lineup of global legends, whose influence is woven into the fabric of modern club life. Headliners include the godfather of acid rave Danny Rampling (UK), house music pioneer Judge Jules (UK), and legendary DJ/producer Seb Fontaine (UK) – all bringing their 90s mastery.

Session Two celebrates sweaty hedonistic 00s dancefloors; with Dutch heavyweight Laidback Luke (NL), big room house maestro Mousse T. (GER), and English electronic dance music duo X-Press 2 (UK) taking the helm.

Adding to the lineup are a huge suite of local talent PLUS Ministry of Sound’s Australian legends – John Course, Mark Dynamix & Dirty South – who between them compiled and mixed album titles which went on to sell millions of copies through the decades across The Annual, Sessions, Clubbers Guide and more. Joining the tour once again will be dancefloor favourite & party icon Minx.

The Great Southern Slam returning to Adelaide, June 8-10

The world’s biggest roller derby tournament is returning to Adelaide. That’s right – The Great Southern Slam (TGSS) 2024 is a go! Strap yourself in for three days of hard hits, quick feet, and endless good times as the biennial competition returns to the Adelaide Showground over the June long weekend.

From June 8-10, 2024, local, national, and international derby teams will converge on the Adelaide Showground from every corner of Australia and New Zealand to battle it out on the track once more, with 45 teams will competing in 65 games across three divisions.

Hosted by Adelaide Roller Derby, the event will also double as a showcase for local artisans and world-wide skate brands alike, with a marketplace featuring stalls from Adelaide’s “Craft Queen” Calamity Tash to internationally popular skate company Riedell Skates.

To add to the excitement, this year the2024 TGSS Division 1 will act as the inaugural Women’s Flat Track DerbyAssociation (WFTDA) Regional Championships for the Oceania Region, with two teams set to go through to the World Championships held in Portland, Oregon USA in November.

WFTDA, the umbrella organisation for roller derby internationally, launched a new rankings system in June 2023 to create a regionally based competitive structure, with TGSS receiving recognition as the preeminent tournament in the Oceania region. The region, comprised of Australia and New Zealand, was allocated two spots in the Global Championships, meaning that the top two teams from TGSS will earn themselves a ticket to the Global Champs to be held in Portland, Oregon in November of this year.

The current top five teams vying for the coveted tickets are the respective A teams from Victorian Roller Derby League (VRDL), Brisbane City Rollers (BCR), Sun State Roller Derby (SUN), Adelaide Roller Derby (ADRD), and Perth Roller Derby (VRDL). As the seventh-ranked team internationally, VRDL are the tournament favourites, but homegrown hopefuls ADRD will be looking to repeat their TGSS 2022 results, where they placed second.

ADRD skater and TGSS committee member Alex Knopoff – who plays under the alias ‘Rage Ruthless’ – said: “Adelaide Roller Derby is so excited to be hosting The Great Southern Slam once again. Fifteen years on from our first tournament, TGSS is the must-attend event of the Australia/New Zealand roller derby calendar and it’s fantastic to have that recognised internationally through being selected as the WFTDA Regional Championship for Oceania.

“Putting on a tournament of this scale is a massive undertaking that is only possible due to the hard work of a small group of volunteers – it’s truly a labour of love. On top of that, many of us are also participants, with both our A and B teams in this year’s competition. We (the A team) have been training hard and we’re really hoping to place in the top two to earn our ticket to World Champs.”

Hosted by Adelaide Roller Derby and held at the Adelaide Showground in the heart of South Australia, The GreatSouthern Slam is a biennial roller derby tournament that has attracted over5000 athletes and spectators over the June long weekend. Roller derby is played worldwide, with The Great Southern Slam the centrepiece of competition in Australia!

Spectators are welcome with pre-sale weekend passes now available via Humanitix for $65 + booking fee. Day passes are available online and at the door for $25 for Saturday and Sunday, and $35 for the Finals on Monday. Under-12 tickets start at just $10 a day.

FODI: FESTIVAL OF DANGEROUS IDEAS

Festival of Dangerous Ideas (FODI) has today unveiled its 2024 theme, Sanctuary, with a program for curious minds on 24-25 August. The home-grown, globally renowned festival returns to Sydney for the first time since 2022, with its twelfth edition set to delight and disrupt Australian audiences across one weekend.

Australia’s original disruptive festival, known for being at the zeitgeist of ideas, FODI will bring thought-leaders and artists from across the globe to Carriageworks’ art precinct. Its line-up, set to be announced in June, will fuel critical thinking, challenge preconception, provide information and spark conversations.

Offering a haven for exploration and a harbour for the curious, FODI 2024’s Sanctuary invites audiences to engage with the ideas behind the headlines of the 24-hour news cycle. It provides a space to spend time with international experts and agenda-setting changemakers, to better understand what is driving change in the world and society for better or worse.

Danielle Harvey, Festival Director, FODI, said:

FODI is an ideas festival for our times: inviting guests to indulge their curiosity, focus their attention and engage with the uncomfortable. The festival has featured over 630 of the most fascinating, fearless speakers and artists the world has to offer. Past speakers include Stephen Fry, Lionel Shriver, Christopher Hitchens, Alicia Garza, Salman Rushdie, Pussy Riot, Marcia Langton, Julian Assange and Germaine Greer.

The Festival is presented by The Ethics Centre, a not for profit that encourages people to examine all aspects of life, and is supported by the NSW Government through its tourism and major events agency, Destination NSW.

LEAPS AND BOUNDS MUSIC FESTIVAL IS REIGNITING YARRA’S LOCAL LIVE MUSIC SCENE ONCE AGAIN THIS WINTER!

RETURNS 25 – 28 JULY

Yarra City Council’s annual winter music festival, Leaps and Bounds, returns with a focus on uplifting and amplifying Yarra’s diverse live music scene. Including the reopening of a historical venue that has been dormant for decades, this year’s festival strives to highlight the diversity of bands, performers and song writers that attracts an equally diverse audience of music lovers across all ages.

“Much loved for over a decade, Leaps and Bounds is a favourite in the Yarra calendar” Mayor Edward Crossland said.

“We’re so proud to continue hosting this spectacular festival and supporting local musicians, venues and workers, particularly in light of recent challenges that the industry is facing relating to rising rents, cost of living pressures and increasing public liability insurance.”

A celebration of local music, the diverse line-up of live shows will hit venues across Fitzroy, Fitzroy North, Collingwood, Abbotsford and Richmond from Thursday 25 July to Sunday 28 July.

Spanning four days and nights, the festival boasts a succession of parties and performances for all age groups and every budget, including plenty of free and family-friendly gigs on the program.

This year’s program provides a platform for venues to program a diverse lineup from LGBTIQA+ and First Nations musicians and to build audiences across generations.

Highlights include:

Tribute shows to Mazzy Star at Lulie Tavern, Gillian Welch at The Gem and John Prine at Catfish Bar.
Amos Roach Unplugged featuring the award-winning musician, dancer and director, for an intimate performance at the Railway Hotel Fitzroy. An unmissable opportunity to also see the newly refurbished bandroom, which hosted dances for returned soldiers in the 50s through to local rock acts like Weddings Parties Anything in the early 2000s, but has sat dormant for decades, until now!
Other First Nations shows include Tjum Tjumba Fundraiser at Glamorama and Kiwat Kennell at Bodriggy Brewing Co.
Berada by Nighthawks x Rama Parwata promises to deliver an unforgettable experience as a showcase of Southeast Asian artists that merges cultural influences, experimental sounds and dynamic performances including Hantu, the solo project of multi-instrumentalist and ethnomusicologist Isobel D’Cruz which draws on her Western and Indian classical training and Malaysian background,
Shows for young families and teenagers including: Baby, y ou’re a star at Lulie Tavern: a gig for parents, pals and kids in conjunction with Yarra Youth DJ Skills plus Horsepower Two Year Anniversary Show (All Ages) at The Tote featuring Horsepower and a host of acts from Melbourne and Sydney with J.O.Y (SYD), Bozo (SYD), Mindrace and Tarnished.
PBS Presents ‘Swinging City’ Live from The Corner Hotel: To celebrate and launch Leaps and Bounds 2024, PBS will continue their tradition of a live broadcast from one of Yarra’s finest establishments the Corner Hotel, presenting not one, but two PBS radio shows live-to-air from the rooftop bar and courtyard. Join hosts Crispi Winsor and Myles O’Neil-Shaw for 4 hours of live music, special guests and rare records as Radio City and Swinging Doors combine for this special broadcast.

Successful events from last year will also return for another exciting instalment in 2024:

GRRLS to the Front at Bad Decisions Bar – a hip hop show spotlighting female identifying, non-binary, and LGBTIQA+ rap and hip-hop artists, and their passionate fan bases.
FLIGHT! – a showcase featuring the new generation of Naarm’s best artists, featuring 9 acts from culturally diverse backgrounds. Presented by The Boite & The Evelyn Hotel.
Leaps and Bounds Record Fair at Collingwood Town Hall.

As part of the festival, Council is also proud to announce a partnership with Live Music Locator (LML), a pilot project to promote all the live music taking place in the municipality from July onwards, including Leaps and Bounds Festival. Taking in ten dates across the country, the Black Betty 20^th Anniversary Tour kicks off at Brisbane’s Fortitude Music Hall on Tuesday 13 August, heading through all Australian Capital Cities plus stops in Newcastle, Wollongong and the Gold Coast this August, September and October.

Alex Farell, born in 2006 in Liverpool, UK, is known for his dark techno sound. At 14, he debuted at WAV club and released EPs on Redlof Records and Space Kraft Recordings. His track ‘3 AM in Berlin’ on Reckless Records gained traction alongside support from industry peers like 999999999 and DYEN. Making his international debut at Complex presents The First Rave in 2023 and a subsequent Boiler Room appearance, Alex’s career highlights include playing his first 6-hour all-night set at WAV club and performing at events like the Complex Festival.

FANTASM

Fantasm, also known as Kenzo Meservey, is a techno DJ and producer originally from Los Angeles, United States, and now based in Lyon, France. Renowned for his industrial techno sound, characterized by powerful kicks and dark atmospheres, Fantasm has garnered a devoted following within the techno community.

OMAKS

Originally from Paris, OMAKS started mixing in 2019 before diving into music production in Lyon two years later, crafting his powerful techno sound. Tracks like “Back Street Bass” and his EP “5AM” in 2022 established his presence in the scene. Throughout 2023, he released a track monthly, showcasing his talent with hits like ‘Crowd Control’. Regularly performing across France, Europe, and South America with collectives like Verknipt and Teletech, OMAKS aims to energize dancefloors and leave a lasting impression with his dynamic sets.

VARYA KARPOVA

Varya Karpova R has been turning heads with her style of music. Combining hard-hitting techno mashed in with playful sounds from the hard dance genres which we feel is the perfect blend. The Warehouse Project, Manchester’s revered institution, renowned for its cultural impact in the rave scenes, has announced it will head to the Southern Hemisphere for the very first time.

Following huge international success in Europe across Rotterdam, Netherlands and Antwerp, Belgium last year, Australia is set to be the next destination for The Warehouse Project.

For one weekend only, Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th May 2024, Melbourne and Sydney will be home to The Warehouse Project. In partnership with Live Nation Australia, the special weekender will showcase an impressive array of international artists as well as home-grown talents from Australia.

Since its inception in 2006, The Warehouse Project has continuously pushed boundaries in unique disused spaces around its home city in Manchester, from the early days at Boddingtons Brewery to today’s industrial rave powerhouse, Depot Mayfield.

Bringing the concept Down Under this May, The Warehouse Project will take over two remarkable venues – the dynamic PICA in Melbourne, and Munro Warehouse located in the prominent Sydney Olympic Park.

The weekender in Melbourne and Sydney will take place simultaneously on Saturday and Sunday. Featuring globally acclaimed artists alongside some of Australia’s freshest talent, Day One in Melbourne (25th May) and Day Two in Sydney (26th May) will see Bonobo bring his international Outlier series to the Australian-cities. Outlier has seen Bonobo harness his talents as a curator and arbiter of club culture, as well as demonstrating his instinctive relationship with music. Bonobo will be joined on the day by Kelly Lee Owens, Australia’s own HAAi, Paula Tape and DJ PGZ, and The Warehouse Project resident, Krysko.

Day Two in Melbourne (26th May) and Day One in Sydney (25th May) will welcome one of the most in-demand artists on the scene and another Australian favourite, Mall Grab, who will present his now legendary Looking For Trouble party for the first time in his native Australia. Mall Grab will be joined by Effy, Jennifer Loveless, and Australian DJ Dameeeela.

Keep it Tropical is a journey through Bobby’s joyous tropical soul sound, with focus track Usually An Avalanche, stripping it back with a folk inspired flare. Discussing the creation of Usually An Avalanche and the broader album, Bobby said; “How do you find joy? I Keep It Tropical. This is my mantra. SPEED and hardcore are two words that have become synonymous on a global scale. The band have staked claim on the genre through exhilarating live performances, epic music videos, and staying true to themselves. ONLY ONE MODE, a phrase coined by the group, declares the title of their first full-length album, a debut which exemplifies the band’s growth while still delivering the SPEED ethos. This is what they’re about: Hardcore, played hard, played fast, “for us, by us”—explicit, immediate, definitive—hinting at all the crucial bands that have come before them.

‘REAL LIFE LOVE’, the new single out today, is about the loyalty and realness they’ve learnt from hardcore, how SPEED connected through showing up; a depth of expression and emotion set against very punishing music. On ‘REAL LIFE LOVE’, vocalist Jem Siow states: “My time in hardcore has informed the relationships I have with everyone I hold close. An unconditional sense of love and loyalty. A bond that knows no words. Relationships that now span a lifetime. To us, this unique sense of deep-seated understanding is the essence of HC, it’s what we’re most passionate about and grateful for. Yet there are many in, and especially outside of this space who conflate this idea. If you stick around long enough, you might just get it. Otherwise, what’s the point to all of this?”

Formed in 2019, the members of SPEED – brothers Jem Siow (vocals) and Aaron Siow (bass), guitarists Josh Clayton and Dennis Vichidvongsa, and drummer Kane Vardon – never set out for popularity. The band has always done things on their own terms, working with the same collaborators since inception – producer Elliott Gallart and videographer Jack Rudder. When 2021 single ‘We See U’ was released, the song quickly rose to a million streams, unprecedented for a hardcore act from Sydney at the time. 2022’s Gang Called Speed EP became a definitive moment for the band.

Global praise poured in from press outlets like Rolling Stone Australia, NME, Kerrang, Revolver, The Fader, Stereogum, to name a few. SPEED found themselves touring across the world – North America, Europe, Southeast Asia, Australia – and documenting it all along the way. 2024 shows absolutely zero signs of slowing down. SPEED is currently at the start of a six week North American tour supporting Knocked Loose, Show Me The Body, and Loathe, the band is slated to open two of the Have Heart reunion shows, and have festival plays, including Download and Hellfest, in Europe in-between.

This is a hardcore band from Australia who surpassed what they thought they might do at the start, and has since doubled down, ONLY ONE MODE, as fast and as hard as possible. Exploding into view all over the world at the end of 2023 after being featured on every music lover’s favourite YouTube series ‘Justin Hawkins Rides Again’, the rest of the world is starting to see what Australia has known for quite some time – The Southern River Band are the real deal.

Hailing from Thornlie in Western Australia (Where? Exactly), SRB has spent years on the road and in the air, taking their full-throttle live show to anywhere with a stage and a bar, leaving thousands of fans grinning from ear to ear, night after night. From sold out national tours, playing with Aussie legends such as Cold Chisel & Rose Tattoo, through to supporting modern day rock icons like The Darkness and Eagles Of Death Metal, SRB never fail to raise their own bar.

With the release of their 6-minute epic Stan Qualen in September of last year, the band kicked into a whole ‘nother gear, charting in 23 countries worldwide and announced their first ever International Tour that sees them play 38 shows in Australia, The UK and Europe, gracing the stages of festivals such as The Great Escape, Vestrock, Sweden Rock Festival, Rock Werchter and Down The Rabbit Hole to name a few. After freshly signing a deal with Cooking Vinyl Australia, the band – Cal Kramer, Dan Carroll, Pat Smith & Tyler ‘The Hawk’ Michie – are gearing up for by far their biggest year yet, with the release of their new single ‘Vice City III‘ (out today) and a record to follow later in the year.

Of the label signing, Cal says “We are absolutely fucking stoked to be joining the legends at CVA, good people doing good shit, ya can’t ask for nothin’ more. We can’t wait to conquer the world with them, one song at a time!” A sentiment that is equally shared by CVA.

To put it in layman’s terms – The Southern River Band never fail to deliver.

FLOWER POWER RETURNS TO PACHA IBIZA

Pacha Ibiza’s legendary Flower Power is back again this season, reimagined for a new era while staying true to its core essence. Every Saturday, revellers will embark on a transformative journey through four distinct chapters, capturing the island’s free spirit: HOLI IBIZA, ARMY OF FLOWERS, CIRCODELIA, and FUTURE OF FREEDOM. Lead by resident DJ Bora Uzer as he takes control each night alongside a select number of guests. Immerse yourself in a summer of liberation, love, and self-discovery at Pacha Ibiza.

Bora Uzer is set to be the official resident of Flower Power at Pacha Ibiza 2024. The Miami-based Turkish native will bring his world renowned live show to Pacha Ibiza – one that has thrilled crowds around the world. Thanks to his education at the Rotterdam Conservatoire of Music, he is a skilled musician who can speak with, respond to, and provoke real emotion in his crowds with whatever instrument is to hand. His unconventional performance style will see him take the Pacha Ibiza crowd to new ground.

Saturday’s at Pacha Ibiza will undoubtedly sit amongst the hottest parties on the White Isle bringing with it both variety sonically and an element of the unknown that Bora Uzer brings with each of his performances. From May 18 – October 5, 2024 Bora Uzer will take the reins of one of the most coveted residencies on the planet.

Pacha Ibiza is set for a monumental season with world-renowned resident artists including Diplo, CamelPhat, Bedouin, Robin Shulz, Solomun and Marco Carola appearing throughout the season.
