DZ DEATHRAYS MARK TEN YEARS OF BLACK RAT LP NATIONAL ANNIVERSARY TOUR THIS JUNE – JULY + VINYL RE-RELEASE

by the partae March 5, 2024
written by the partae
PRAISE FOR BLACK RAT

Feature Album
triple j

“The band’s musicality has taken a colossal advancing lunge; Parsons’ vocal range has developed to incorporate throat lacerating howls and sweet coos, whilst the spewing riffs from his guitar have been supersized for LP2. Ridley’s drumming is more adventurous, taking on wild patterns and the kind of tub-thumping associated with Dave Grohl or a rock music obsessed octopus.”
Northern Transmissions (9.0/10)

“The Aussie hellraisers find new ways to party on the follow-up to ‘Bloodstreams’”
NME (★★★★)

“Near 40 minutes of slow and sweaty seduction executed exquisitely by weeping guitar”
DIY Magazine (★★★★)

“Another house-party-in-an-album reeking of sweat-drenched, hormone-soaked abandon… The thrash-pop duo have an instinctive sense of balance though: mostly hinging on their ability to follow a vicious kick to the teeth with a devilishly catchy pop hook”
Sydney Morning Herald (★★★★)

“The sound of a confident band torn between its populist, party-friendly beginnings and a new-found ability to embrace glimpses of beauty amid the sonic destruction.”
The Australian  (★★★ ½)

“Their gloriously off-kilter approach is compelling and then some”
Kerrang!

“it builds on their first album in all the right ways: more earworms, less clutter, everything polished with just a little blood in the spit”
CLASH

“With brutal riffs cribbed from metal, vocals that’d fit right in on a Fugazi classic, and ecstatically warped melodies that recall Hot Hot Heat, these two plant a firm flag for their summer album,
Black Rat”

SPIN

“Two years of touring has allowed DZ Deathrays to realize their capabilities as songwriters and with Black Rat, it’s clear they’ve got their sights set on bigger and stranger things”
Exclaim!

In celebration of the decade anniversary of their album Black Rat, DZ Deathrays announce their embarkation on a national tour this June & July – tickets are on sale March 5.

With over 14 million streams, international critical acclaim and the ARIA Award for Best Hard Rock/Heavy Metal Album, Black Rat (released through long-time friends I OH YOU) cast DZ Deathrays into the stratosphere. Revered for its blend of garage rock and dance punk, the genre defining record cemented Shane Parsons and Simon Ridley’s names in the national sphere as well as leaders in the recognition and successful export of Australian talent worldwide.

Their innovation captivated fans and industry alike, relentlessly touring 15 countries in just two years. Now a modern classic, their marriage of infectious hooks as in hits ‘Gina Works at Hearts’, ‘Reflective Skull’ and ‘Ocean Exploder’, combined with high-octane live show performances cemented DZ’s reputation as an electrifying addition to the Australian rock canon.

Locally, the album’s esteem included placement as triple j Feature Album, through to praise for “how subtly they are transforming away from their indie punk party thrash origins” (The Music), and as like “having the best radio station in the world on in the background – you don’t know what’s coming next but you know that it’s going to be good” (Beat Magazine) amongst reviews with The Australian, Sydney Morning Herald remarking on their lasting growth. No different on release than today, Black Rat continues to leave a lasting impact.

Celebrate ten years of Black Rat this June through to July where DZ Deathrays will revisit all 11 songs in full across Australia. An exclusive anniversary white vinyl repress is available now for pre-order, limited to 300 worldwide.

ABOUT DZ DEATHRAYS

From their inception, DZ Deathrays remain one of the most recognisable acts in the contemporary Australian rock canon, most notably with the success of their debut album Bloodstreams which made DZ synonymous with thunderous. Quickly followed by their second album Black Rat signifying a maturer sound, they expanded beyond their garage roots into an award-winning machine, touring the world countless times over, supporting The Foo Fighters stadium tours, Ratatat, Biffy Clyro, Grinspoon and more, headline slots across The Tivoli, The Enmore and The Forum and more.

Amongst DZ‘s enduring fanbase they remain festival favourites with performance tallies across multiple years at Splendour In The Grass, Falls Festival, St. Jerome’s Laneway alongside international appearances at SXSW, Reading and Leeds Festival, and multiple entries in triple j‘s Hottest 100. Coupled with their more recent LPs Bloody Lovely and their critically-acclaimed twin concept albums, Positive Rising: Part 1 and Part 2, the project of Shane Parsons, Simon Ridley and Lachlan Ewbank has long cemented DZ Deathrays‘ staple status – it’s not every day that a band gets stronger and more popular with time.

Gold-certified indie-pop outfit iDKHOW release highly anticipated sophomore album ‘GLOOM DIVISION’, a cocktail of experimental art-pop, post-punk & R&B infused tracks

by the partae February 29, 2024
written by the partae

Today, I DONT KNOW HOW BUT THEY FOUND ME (iDKHOW), the musical project of Salt Lake City-based singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Dallon Weekes, releases their sophomore album GLOOM DIVISION via Concord Records. It follows singles ‘WHAT LOVE?’, ‘GLOOMTOWN BRATS’ and ‘INFATUATION’. Produced by Dave Fridmann (Tame Impala, MGMT, Weezer), GLOOM DIVISION showcases a boundary-pushing fusion of R&B, post-punk and art-pop, exploring themes ranging from love and obsession to satanic panic and neurodivergence. Recorded at Fridmann’s Tarbox Road Studios and Weekes’ own basement studio, GLOOM DIVISION is a testament to the power of collaboration and fearless artistic expression.

The album release is accompanied by a music video for track ‘DOWNSIDE’ that touches on becoming so enamored with a romantic partner that it can be difficult to find faults in the relationship. A thunderous bassline and whispered vocals open that track that breaks into danceable avant-pop.

‘DOWNSIDE’ music video dir. by Aiden Weber

The upcoming 2024 North American GLOOMTOWN TOUR kicks off March 15 and has already SOLD OUT 21 of the 27 dates including NYC’s Irving Plaza and Los Angeles’ Regent Theater, with more sell outs on the horizon. SoCal four piece band Benches to support. The tour will continue into Europe and the UK starting on June 15th at Rock For People Festival in Hradec, CZ and ending at the legendary Shepherd’s Bush Empire in London, UK on July 3. The Molotovs to support in Europe and Balancing Act to support in the UK. Tickets are available now.

iDKHOW has garnered nearly one billion streams worldwide to date, with two million monthly listeners on Spotify. The new album follows iDKHOW’s critically acclaimed debut,’Razzmatazz’, which included the #1 Alternative radio hit ‘Leave Me Alone’, and the previous EP 1981 Extended Play that included RIAA certified GOLD-certified single ‘Choke’. They have performed on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Ellen and CBS This Morning: Saturday, and shared stages with Post Malone, The Killers and more.

Pitch, who are known for their brutalist architecturally designed stages, will reimagine their stage designs this year. The Resident Advisor stage preview has recently been revealed which features the stage topped with a custom made sphere.

The new Pitch Greenhouse, will transform from a recharge haven during the day to an experimental playground at night, featuring DJs and takeovers from Skylab Radio, Deep Water, Navy Blue Radio, and a pop-up bar by Quiet Time.

The Pitch Pavilion, a space nestled under a canopy of trees will offer immersive experiences such as wellness workshops, ambient DJ sets, and yoga. New to the space for 2024 will be massages, sessions with a reiki healer, and festival-goers can book in for tarot card-reading sessions.

Hidden amongst the campgrounds, discover, a hub away from the main stages eclectic music styles

Hidden amongst the campgrounds, the Pitch Precinct offers a hub of eclectic music styles away from the main stages. Hosted by popular local collectives On3 and The Operatives, the space will feature renegade parties & takeovers from Now Hear This, Inbraza, Closet, and Picked Last.

Festival-goers can also look forward to Pitch’s new diverse merchandise range which will be on offer. Named Mechanical Utopia, the range draws inspiration from binary imagery and pixel art.

One of the festival’s highlights is the convergence of music and art. Notable artists such as Olivier Ratsi, Spencer Rose, and Øfferings will showcase their works.

For added convenience, Pitch offers Pre-Pitched tents, allowing attendees to arrive at a fully set-up tent.

Pitch will be donating $1 for every food item sold at the Community BBQ to aid in the rebuild and recovery efforts for the bushfire affected community of Pomonal. Patrons are encouraged to purchase burgers, sausage sizzles and bacon and egg rolls from the community BBQ to support this cause.

Secure your tickets now and immerse yourself in a weekend of self discovery, creativity and inclusion.

by the partae February 28, 2024
written by the partae

Charlotte de Witte, Sefa, Oliver Heldens, Franky Rizardo, Adam Beyer, Brennan Heart, Yellow Claw and many more are set to take the stage at the world’s longest running dance festival

Mysteryland will take place from August 30th to September 1st at Floriadeterrein in

Haarlemmermeer, The Netherlands

Mysteryland, world’s longest-running electronic dance music festival, returns to Floriadeterrein, promising an unforgettable weekend filled with creativity, diverse music styles, delectable food, and an array of exciting activities. With more than three decades of success and expertise, Mysteryland remains committed to pushing boundaries and crafting an immersive experience for festival-goers from around the world.

Creativity unleashed at Floriadeterrein

This year, Mysteryland returns to the stunning Floriadeterrein with a renewed focus on creativity. The festival grounds will come alive with a captivating range of fresh installations and mind-bending stage designs, while Friday’s Midnight Bingo spectacle and the enticing Peepshow Bingo, which excited fans far and wide during its first appearance last year, make their reappearance.

Musical extravaganza across various stages

Mysteryland is renowned for its diverse music offerings, and this year is no exception. Charlotte de Witte has the honour of closing off the festival with a captivating techno set on the main stage. Fans of the techno sound will be treated to some proper beats throughout the whole weekend by HI-LO, I Hate Models, Lilly Palmer, ARTBAT, and 999999999. The festival features an impressive lineup of hostings, including the highly anticipated 3-day Elrow extravaganza and the debut of Joy as a new hosting partner. Notable artists gracing the stages include Nic Fanciulli, WADE, Sam Divine, Chelina Manuhutu, Franky Rizardo, Ilario Alicante, Archie Hamilton, and many more.

Highlighting musical styles and surprise b2bs

The festival caters to a wide range of musical tastes, showcasing genres such as Techno (including Hard Techno and Melodic Techno), House, Hardstyle, Trance, EDM, R&B, Hip Hop, and Afrobeat. Standout back-to-back performances include Fedde le Grand b2b Mark Knight, Chelina Manuhutu b2b Fleur Shore, De Sluwe Vos b2b Michel de Hey, Max Dean b2b Luke Dean, Yellow Claw b2b Natte Visstick and more.

Special showcases and LED screen magic

The hardstyle area takes centre stage at one of the biggest areas of the festival, promising the biggest hardstyle stage Mysteryland has seen to date. Expect special showcases and creative uses of LED screens, ensuring a visual and auditory spectacle for festival-goers.

Camping and beyond

Mysteryland offers more than just music, providing an array of options at the campsite. These include the renowned Healing Garden, where you can unwind before, after, or between dancing sessions, various afterparties, and a variety of accommodation types and camper spots. The campsite features the ‘bring your own tent’ area, Friends Camp area, and a Comfort Camp area for those seeking more luxury and tranquillity. The latter includes facilities such as a swimming pool, wellness area, restaurant, and a deluxe breakfast buffet. Moreover, the campsite has been relocated closer to the festival terrain, eliminating the need for long walks.

Sustainability at the core

Mysteryland remains committed to sustainability, exemplified by initiatives like the establishment of a fixed green, locally generated power network, implemented last year. The festival continues to prioritise efforts to reduce its environmental footprint, building upon the successes of previous years. This year marks the 29th edition of Mysteryland, celebrating its 22nd year at Floriadeterrein. With over 250 artists featured on the lineup, the festival guarantees an unparalleled experience for electronic music enthusiasts.

Tickets are available from Tuesday, February 27th, via:

REGURGITATOR ANNOUNCE MASSIVE NATIONAL TOUR SPANNING 21 DATES IT’S SO INVASIVE…TOUR 2024

by the partae February 28, 2024
written by the partae
Regurgitator announce It’s So Invasive…Tour 2024, spanning a colossal 21 dates across the nation this May and June.

It’s so invasive…

Let’s get this flow on the road.

This ain’t no pop show… this here is an epic all-out crashing the rocks show. From a year past of Units, Kiss, Weezer, and a feast of festivals we head into this coming year with a sense of escalation and elevation… all with a new album in hand headed your way – Invader. Teaming up on this rather invasive run will be great friends of Regurgitator, those no-wavin’ jazz punksters PARTY DOZEN, along with select appearances by Tasmaniainan locals THE SUBCULTURE CLIQUE; digital hardcore eggpunkers DISPLEASURE, and Brisbane’s mechanical techno retro-futurists MONSTER ZOKU ONSOMB!… and extra special blood red cream in selected metro zones is the glitter punk-pop of CRY BABY. This is gonna be fun.

Noise annoys… it surrounds us all with an ever-present insistence. It fills our screens, our minds,… and our world with a gaze of distractions. Just an invasion of pervasive white noise historywide, propelled by an armada of commerce hell-bent on leaching the goodness of this world for material gain. Driving into mayhem through time, told this rumbling engine of capitalism has always been the undercarriage of this breaking chassis. Culture and country fall prey to this fervour of infection like a virus with no restitution.

Absolute respect to our ever-loving fan base. You are our all and everything. We commit to you in the manner you commit to us. You inspire us over and over. As we enter the water dragon of our 30th year it is your ongoing enthusiasm that rides us high and mighty. At the end of the day when we stand on stages across this land playing our hearts out to you we know with clarity and awareness that it is you our fans who are the base of our being. We never forget that and we love you all the more for it! Build with us.

In our limited capacity, we will do our best to make a stand for the dispossessed, disenfranchised, and anyone suffering injustice in the broadest manner we can. The world is served best by compassion and cooperation. We, without question, acknowledge these lands we exist, create, and tour upon as stolen and pay our respects to the traditional custodians of this life-giving country, both elders past and present.

“Nothing ever works in isolation and neither do we.”

PARTY DOZEN
Party Dozen are a 2-piece from Sydney made up of Kirsty Tickle (saxophone) and
Jonathan Boulet (percussion and sampler). Forming in 2017, they have become
renowned in Australia for their incendiary live shows and three remarkable albums.
Blending elements of psych, hardcore, no-wave and jazz, their largely instrumental
sets are punctuated by Kirsty’s unique “singing” style, screaming into the bell of her
saxophone, which goes through a bevvy of effects pedals. The last three years have
seen them tour Europe, the USA, Japan and China, release a record on Sub Pop and
have Nick Cave feature as guest vocalist on single “Macca The Mutt”.

DISPLEASURE (New Zealand)
Displeasure are a high-energy industrial punk three-piece, playing a hybrid of anarcho-punk and digital hardcore from Aotearoa New Zealand. Equal parts furious and catchy, buzz-saw guitars and politically charged vocals are propelled by heavy synth-bass and pounding electro-acoustic drums. Combining elements of industrial gabber, raging d-beat, and new wave eggpunk, Displeasure draws from the likes of DAF, Crass, Ministry and Devo, with a dose of the Mortal Kombat soundtrack.

“Like some kind of politically laser-focussed Devo / Six Finger Satellite, the trio bust out furiously catchy and whip-smart, almost New Wavey hooks — feeling aptly sci-fi in their critique of Western capitalism’s increasingly absurd, neototalitarian anti-human death drive (and accompanying symptoms).”  –UnderTheRadar

CRY CLUB
If Cry Club — consisting of guitarist Jonathon Tooke (he/him) and vocalist Heather Riley (they/them) — can be distilled down to one thing (besides their trademark makeup of glittery trails of tears down their cheeks), it’s their knack for turning unsightly and complicated feelings into cathartic punk-pop.

Pulling from their past lives in math-rock and musical theatre, Cry Club have entered their “villain era” on their second album “Spite Will Save Me”. A tight 10-track romp through all manner of rock ranging from Van Halen-esque hair metal to Rage Against the Machine Thrashers. Cry Club are eager to play Spite Will Save Me to fans, creating environments where fans can thrash through their feelings and embrace their inner emo. Join the club.

MONSTER ZOKU ONSOMB! (MZO)
Crawling out of the pre-Olympic rubble of Meanjin, MZO! reform to unify Australia with Rave whistles, Hoovers and Tequila-infused Earworms! Unlike anything you have experienced, this 5-piece ensemble has started riots across the planet with a cyclone of counter-cultural energy that confronts Hguman with Machine, Techno with Rock, and Retro with Futurism. “What is this!?” you may find yourself asking…
MZO! are the WAKE-UP call that you forgot you ordered. The ANSWER to the question you didn’t ask.
The CURE you never knew you needed. And the EXCLAMATION mark at the end of time and space.
MZO! ARE the ELECTROSHOCK therapy our meta-modern age craves, and they are BACK! Amping up the power to jumpstart our disengaged hearts.

Welcoming JETSET – Brazils brand new Boeing 727-200 nightclub located inside Surreal Park to open this summer

by the partae February 22, 2024
written by the partae
Ready to embark on a journey? JETSET is Surreal’s new track! An even more revolutionary space, it will feature a structure assembled from the fuselage of a Boeing 727-200 airplane.
A unique and complex project, the plane is currently being disassembled at Curitiba airport and will undergo refurbishment, as well as a chroming process, and a special project for the implementation of the plane in Surreal. The aircraft used to carry up to 189 passengers, with a length of 46.68 meters and a maximum speed of 1,014 km/h.
The complexity of this project involves different aspects, including the logistics from Curitiba to Camboriú, which will be carried out with a special highway authorization for this transportation. An experienced production team is working at full speed, and the implementation project for the plane at Surreal Park is from the architecture firm 8B. The plane will be the protagonist in this new space, featuring a deck, runway, bar, with the wings serving as an elevated observation point for the park, and a special lighting project for the plane is in development. Something truly unique is emerging in Brazil.
At Surreal, the Boeing 727-200 will transport musical travelers, and speed is now measured in BPM. The captain of this journey you already know: Renato Ratier and his innovative mind. The first boarding will be in the summer of 2024. JETSET will leave Surreal a mix of artistic experiences that go beyond music, transporting us to the world of dreams as a source for creating experiences.

The Fashion Edit Makers Market will ignite Melbourne’s fashion scene this Saturday when it takes over Queen Victoria Market’s iconic open-air sheds and laneways.

Fashion enthusiasts and trendsetters alike can step into a vibrant world where style meets innovation. The one-day event promises more than 45 stalls brimming with one-off creations and fashion-forward pieces. Marvel at and shop cutting-edge designs by some of the city’s most talented makers.

Attendees can shop the stalls while enjoying electrifying beats from a resident DJ before quenching their thirst at the Brick Lane pop-up bar.

The stallholder line-up is set to impress and features an array of local, independent labels.

The Only Label: jumpsuits, pants, dresses and jackets in bold colours and fun prints.

Mama Movement: sustainable, colourful activewear and raincoats made from recycled plastic bottles.

Days of Grace: an ethically conscious and socially responsible label showcasing feminine silhouettes in small runs that exude freedom and elegance.

Loungewear Republic: cosy, matching loungewear sets in bright colours and neutrals, offering comfort and style for home relaxation.

Von Myrce: historically-inspired apparel handmade in Melbourne using recycled and sustainable textiles – think contemporary fashion meets swashbuckling medieval troubadour.

Sachi Craft: a wide range of fashion items upcycled from vintage Japanese kimono and yukata garments.

Ms Whimsy: a collection of unique and practical handbags in vibrant colours and prints, all handcrafted in Melbourne.

The Fashion Edit Makers Market is a free event in collaboration with PayPal’s Melbourne Fashion Festival.

When: Saturday 24 February 2024

Where: C-D sheds (Peel Street end), Queen Victoria Market

Time: 9:00am to 3:00pm
