Festival of the Stone 2024 | Date & Lineup Announcement

Stone & Wood presents…
FESTIVAL OF THE STONE 2024
DATE & LINEUP ANNOUNCEMENT
Saturday 1 June, Byron Bay
Music | Community | Tradition
Early Release Tickets ON SALE NOW

Stone & Wood is thrilled to confirm the return of Festival of the Stone, a celebration of music, community and ancient brewing tradition, that will welcome Winter to Byron Bay on Saturday 1 June.

The 10th instalment of Festival of the Stone will see Byron locals and visitors gather to take in a major lineup of music, tantalising tastes and witness the annual unveiling of the 2024 batch of Stone Beer, while also raising much needed funds for local homeless hub, Fletcher Street Cottage. Wins all round!

Get ready to spend Saturday 1 June with…

DAN SULTAN – BEDDY RAYS – THE BEEFS – VERGE COLLECTION
AKA LUI – MID DRIFT

One of Australia’s most loved singer-songwriters Dan Sultan’s trophy shelf holds an incredible 7 ARIA Awards, alongside NIMA Awards, Top 5 ARIA-charting albums, and an ARIA-certified gold record. With countless sold-out headline shows in his wake, he’s also toured with the likes of Bruce Springsteen, Midnight Oil and Vance Joy, and played Australia’s biggest festivals including Splendour in the Grass, Blues Festival and Falls to name a few. He’ll add Festival of the Stone to that list on 1 June!

It’s almost impossible not to recognise a Beddy Rays track, a carefully curated recipe involving all the right ingredients: heartfelt lyrics, huge hooks, mosh-worthy riffs and a lingering sense of comradery and good vibes that underpins everything they create. It’s seen them land plays on triple j’s Hottest 100 and Hottest 100 Like a Versions of all time, an ARIA nomination for ‘Breakthrough Artist’ and spots on festivals around the country. With a knack for knowing how to have a bloody good time, everyone wants to be friends with Beddy Rays.

Ultimate purveyors “pub-pop” goodness, The Beefs founded their musical haven in 2018 when frontman Sammy Smith decided to round up some talented mates and cook up a musical feast for the ages. In the kitchen of their tunes, you’ll find a dash of infectious pop melodies and a sprinkle of rock ‘n’ roll charm. Marinated together with catchy hooks and relatable lyrics, and voilà – you’ve got the signature sound of The Beefs. It’s the kind of music that’ll make you want to hoist a pint in one hand and dance with a mate in the other.

Hailing from Perth, Verge Collection balance classic pop sensibilities with working class poetry to channel the collective conscious of suburban Australian millennials. Songwriter and front-man Ben Arnold’s songs have the ability to hoist you high to the point of chills and a stupid grin, before making you plummet just as quickly into an existential nosedive.

AKA Lui seamlessly fuses disco and psychedelia to create a sound that is uniquely his own. His debut single catapulted him into the spotlight, earning critical acclaim and over 2 million streams on Spotify alone. Recent tracks like “Kick It“, “Lighthouse“, and “Fool” have continued to captivate audiences both in Australia and abroad and with the upcoming release of his debut EP Sapphire Blue on June 21st, AKA Lui is set to confirm his status as a rising star in Australian music.

Bursting with sun-soaked melodies and an electric live set it’s no surprise that Brisbane (Meanjin) indie-pop 5-piece Mid Drift have quickly become a crowd favourite in their hometown and are gaining a loyal fan base interstate. Get a sneak preview of their debut EP Lemon, Lime and Tanlines when they open the stage at Festival of the Stone.

With meticulous care, we’ve created this limited-edition winter brew using the best ingredients we could find, including select Australian malts. Stone beer boasts aromatic notes of brewed coffee, rich dark chocolate, and hints of subtly smoked barley.

Festival of the Stone 2024 will raise money for Byron Shire homeless hub, Fletcher Street Cottage. Byron Shire’s homelessness rate is currently the highest in NSW and Fletcher Street Cottage provides support, information, referral and advocacy to people at risk of homelessness and those already sleeping rough.

“We believe it’s a really important time to support Australian music, events and our community. With Splendour and other festivals having a year off, we’re injecting a little more love into the music side of things this year. Live music in Australia ain’t going anywhere. And with Byron having one of the highest homeless populations in the nation, now is as important as ever to support those sleeping rough. We’re happy to support Fletcher St Cottage’s incredible work in this area for the 10th year in a row.” – James Aris, Stone & Wood Marketing Manager.

There’s nowhere better than Byron in winter! Get that group chat going and make plans to gather in the Bay for music and brews on 1 June. With first release tickets just $60 for 18+, get in early and secure the best deal.

The Warehouse Project, Manchester’s revered institution, renowned for its cultural impact in the rave scenes, has announced it will head to the Southern Hemisphere for the very first time.

Following huge international success in Europe across Rotterdam, Netherlands and Antwerp, Belgium last year, Australia is set to be the next destination for The Warehouse Project.

For one weekend only, Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th May 2024, Melbourne and Sydney will be home to The Warehouse Project. In partnership with Live Nation Australia, the special weekender will showcase an impressive array of international artists as well as home-grown talents from Australia.

Since its inception in 2006, The Warehouse Project has continuously pushed boundaries in unique disused spaces around its home city in Manchester, from the early days at Boddingtons Brewery to today’s industrial rave powerhouse, Depot Mayfield.

Bringing the concept Down Under this May, The Warehouse Project will take over two remarkable venues – the dynamic PICA in Melbourne, and Munro Warehouse located in the prominent Sydney Olympic Park.

The weekender in Melbourne and Sydney will take place simultaneously on Saturday and Sunday. Featuring globally acclaimed artists alongside some of Australia’s freshest talent, Day One in Melbourne (25th May) and Day Two in Sydney (26th May) will see Bonobo bring his international Outlier series to the Australian-cities. Outlier has seen Bonobo harness his talents as a curator and arbiter of club culture, as well as demonstrating his instinctive relationship with music. Bonobo will be joined on the day by Kelly Lee Owens, Australia’s own HAAi, Paula Tape and DJ PGZ, and The Warehouse Project resident, Krysko.

Day Two in Melbourne (26th May) and Day One in Sydney (25th May) will welcome one of the most in-demand artists on the scene and another Australian favourite, Mall Grab, who will present his now legendary Looking For Trouble party for the first time in his native Australia. Mall Grab will be joined by Effy, Jennifer Loveless, and Australian DJ Dameeeela.

Sam Kandel, Co-Founder of The Warehouse Project, said: “Following the success of our first international editions in Rotterdam and Antwerp last year, we’ve been having great fun putting more international plans together.. Australia has always been somewhere we’ve dreamed of hosting The Warehouse Project.. We are also so grateful to Bonobo and Mall Grab, and all the artists both international and domestic who will each play a special part of this WHP Australia debut”

BOBBY ALU RELEASES FOURTH ALBUM ‘KEEP IT TROPICAL’

by the partae May 3, 2024
written by the partae

“Spreading his paradisal sound to audiences around the globe in prolific fashion… he will fill up your heart” – Beat Mag

“His chilled out Pacific tunes have a long-lasting feel good effect and his finely crafted songs have instant appeal.”
ABC Radio Australia

“The songwriting is intelligent, the palette of sounds is broad, and the intent is wonderful” – Dan Condon, DoubleJ

“Whether you’re on, near, or simply pining for a body of water and a calmer frame of mind, Bobby’s
brand of coastal folk will take you there. It takes a lot of skill to make something this good sound so effortless,” Dorothy Markek – Double J Radio – Feature Album Flow

Bobby Alu brings blissful melodies and feel-good energy on his fourth studio album Keep it Tropical out now.

Keep it Tropical is a journey through Bobby’s joyous tropical soul sound, with focus track Usually An Avalanche, stripping it back with a folk inspired flare. The track’s lyrical content is about reckoning with a cascade of overwhelming feelings: Slow fade / quiet place / stacking up the letter forming something to say / I know when I’m on the edge / it’s usually an avalanche in my head.

“The cascading thoughts in your mind when you have overwhelming feelings, sometimes it becomes so full on like an avalanche. It truly can be wonderful, however it can also change to painful. It’s fascinating that such a flip can dictate our wellbeing. They are just feelings. But they are also everything,” said Alu on Usually An Avalanche.

Keep it Tropical is Bobby Alu’s fourth studio album including singles Ready For Your Love and Sunsets (With You). Discussing the creation of Usually An Avalanche and the broader album, Bobby said; “How do you find joy? I Keep It Tropical. This is my mantra. What this mantra means for me is to spend time with friends. To take naps. Be generous. Go on adventures. Have gratitude. Enjoy the little things. Strive to be better. Don’t be so serious. Love. Laugh a lot. Eat the odd doughnut. Swim in the ocean. Enjoy the sunshine and warmth. It is an ongoing quest.

The past few years I’ve been performing with my band Paulie Bromley (bass) and Declan Kelly (drums). Great friends, amazing musicians and inspiring humans. The feeling on stage and in the crowd at our shows has a special warmth and positivity. I really wanted to capture that in this album. We all have studios and rotated between the three. Yama-Nui on the Sunshine Coast with Paulie, The Nest in Sydney with Dec, and my studio Fig Tree Stables in Byron Bay,” said Bobby.

The fourth single Keep it Tropical received editorial support from Music Feeds, GC Live, The Point Music News, and Yahoo! + editorial placement on Spotify’s Indie Arrivals, and Apple Music’s Jazz Soul Cafe and New in Alternative. Prior single ‘Ready for Your Love‘ received editorial support from Tone Deaf, Amnplify, The Point Music News, GC Live, Sounds of Oz, and Australian Music Scene + Spotify editorial placement on New Music Friday AU/NZ, Island Time, and Reggae Nation.

Bobby Alu recently wrapped up his Breakfast Shirts regional cafe tour where he was slinging songs and eating his way through regional Australia with all star cafe-reviewing internet personality and musician Breakfast Shirts, visiting 50 cafes in total.

Join Bobby with the full band for the album release weekend celebration. He will be joined by very special guests: ARIA-award winning world/roots/jazz mates The Vampires (SYD). They will be playing a show at Black Bear Lodge in Brisbane on 4 May and a free entry show at the Brunswick Hotel on 5 May.

This will be a rare opportunity to see Bobby in 2024 before he hits the road in the northern hemisphere for most of the year, including an extensive support run in North America with Xavier Rudd.

His previous studio album Flow was nominated as AIR’s Best Blues & Roots album 2020, debuted at #1 in the AIR Independent Labels Chart, and was named Double J Feature album. Bobby’s warmth and positivity has generated legions of loyal fans, with 650,000 Spotify monthly listeners, and regular support on ABC and Double J.

SPEED DELIVER ‘REAL LIFE LOVE’

by the partae May 2, 2024
written by the partae

RESPECT FOR SPEED

“SPEED does not exist for the sake of just being a band… they want to keep the hardcore scene that shaped them alive, and ensure the baton gets passed to the next generation”
Rolling Stone

“Unapologetically showcase the power of resilience and community”
FBi Radio

“SPEED has, in their brief time, managed to usher in a group of people to this world who may not have previously had any interest in hardcore whatsoever – rare”
Acclaim Magazine

“They’re not taking the spotlight lightly”
NME Magazine

“Their sound and approach is deeply rooted in a rich, and often overlooked subculture. The band’s enthusiasm is high, and their mission is clear – they want you along for the ride”
RUSSH Magazine

Today, Eora / Sydney hardcore band SPEED share ‘REAL LIFE LOVE’, the first single and opening track on their just-announced debut LP ONLY ONE MODE, out July 12 via Last Ride Records (AUS) and Flatspot Records (USA). WATCH VIDEO HERE + LISTEN TO ‘REAL LIFE LOVE’ HERE + PRE-ORDER THE LP HERE.

SPEED and hardcore are two words that have become synonymous on a global scale. The band have staked claim on the genre through exhilarating live performances, epic music videos, and staying true to themselves. ONLY ONE MODE, a phrase coined by the group, declares the title of their first full-length album, a debut which exemplifies the band’s growth while still delivering the SPEED ethos. This is what they’re about: Hardcore, played hard, played fast, “for us, by us”—explicit, immediate, definitive—hinting at all the crucial bands that have come before them.

‘REAL LIFE LOVE’, the new single out today, is about the loyalty and realness they’ve learnt from hardcore, how SPEED connected through showing up; a depth of expression and emotion set against very punishing music. Tough vocals, jolting grooves, pummelling breakdowns, ‘REAL LIFE LOVE’ has everything that makes up the SPEED sound. The music video, produced by SPEED with friends Jack Rudder and Thomas Elliot, celebrates the Sydney hardcore scene.

On ‘REAL LIFE LOVE’, vocalist Jem Siow states: “My time in hardcore has informed the relationships I have with everyone I hold close. An unconditional sense of love and loyalty. A bond that knows no words. Relationships that now span a lifetime. To us, this unique sense of deep-seated understanding is the essence of HC, it’s what we’re most passionate about and grateful for. Yet there are many in, and especially outside of this space who conflate this idea. If you stick around long enough, you might just get it. Otherwise, what’s the point to all of this?”

Formed in 2019, the members of SPEED – brothers Jem Siow (vocals) and Aaron Siow (bass), guitarists Josh Clayton and Dennis Vichidvongsa, and drummer Kane Vardon – never set out for popularity. The band has always done things on their own terms, working with the same collaborators since inception – producer Elliott Gallart and videographer Jack Rudder. When 2021 single ‘We See U’ was released, the song quickly rose to a million streams, unprecedented for a hardcore act from Sydney at the time. 2022’s Gang Called Speed EP became a definitive moment for the band.

Global praise poured in from press outlets like Rolling Stone Australia, NME, Kerrang, Revolver, The Fader, Stereogum, to name a few. SPEED found themselves touring across the world – North America, Europe, Southeast Asia, Australia – and documenting it all along the way. 2024 shows absolutely zero signs of slowing down. SPEED is currently at the start of a six week North American tour supporting Knocked Loose, Show Me The Body, and Loathe, the band is slated to open two of the Have Heart reunion shows, and have festival plays, including Download and Hellfest, in Europe in-between.

This is a hardcore band from Australia who surpassed what they thought they might do at the start, and has since doubled down, ONLY ONE MODE, as fast and as hard as possible. SPEED are doing what they do for the love of their friends, family and the culture of Australian hardcore. They’re under the global spotlight for now, bright enough that their whole scene’s right there with them.

The Southern River Band sign with Cooking Vinyl Australia

by the partae May 2, 2024
written by the partae

“Now this is a proper f***ing rock band”

Justin Hawkins – The Darkness

Exploding into view all over the world at the end of 2023 after being featured on every music lover’s favourite YouTube series ‘Justin Hawkins Rides Again’, the rest of the world is starting to see what Australia has known for quite some time – The Southern River Band are the real deal.

Hailing from Thornlie in Western Australia (Where? Exactly), SRB has spent years on the road and in the air, taking their full-throttle live show to anywhere with a stage and a bar, leaving thousands of fans grinning from ear to ear, night after night. From sold out national tours, playing with Aussie legends such as Cold Chisel & Rose Tattoo, through to supporting modern day rock icons like The Darkness and Eagles Of Death Metal, SRB never fail to raise their own bar.

With the release of their 6-minute epic Stan Qualen in September of last year, the band kicked into a whole ‘nother gear, charting in 23 countries worldwide and announced their first ever International Tour that sees them play 38 shows in Australia, The UK and Europe, gracing the stages of festivals such as The Great Escape, Vestrock, Sweden Rock Festival, Rock Werchter and Down The Rabbit Hole to name a few.   See UK/European dates below.

After freshly signing a deal with Cooking Vinyl Australia, the band – Cal Kramer, Dan Carroll, Pat Smith & Tyler ‘The Hawk’ Michie – are gearing up for by far their biggest year yet, with the release of their new single ‘Vice City III‘ (out today) and a record to follow later in the year.

Of the label signing, Cal says “We are absolutely fucking stoked to be joining the legends at CVA, good people doing good shit, ya can’t ask for nothin’ more. We can’t wait to conquer the world with them, one song at a time!”    A sentiment that is equally shared by CVA.

To put it in layman’s terms – The Southern River Band never fail to deliver.

But hey, don’t take our word for it, find out for yourself!   Find ‘Vice City III‘ streaming on all platforms HERE, and check out the accompanying video below.

Welcome Spin Off’s team of 2024!

Since the release of girl in red’s chiming debut single “i wanna be your girlfriend” Marie Ulven has been at the forefront of alt-pop with biting songs about navigating the world as a young queer woman. Her honest lyrics and intimate production thrilled listeners around the world, making the Norway-born singer-songwriter one of the streaming era’s biggest grass-roots success stories. She’s played major festivals, including Oya and Glastonbury, toured with icons like Billie Eilish and Taylor Swift, had multiple songs hit nine-figure streams and has a string of prestigious awards on her shelf. Spin Off will see girl in red perform a plethora of tracks from her sophomore album I’M DOING IT AGAIN BABY!

One of the most acclaimed pop stars and songwriters of his generation, Conan Gray is set to light up Spin Off with a host of new tracks from his hotly anticipated third album, FOUND HEAVEN after hitting the East Coast on his sold-out Australian FOUND HEAVEN ON TOUR. Four of these singles are already nearing 130 million streams and have earned praise from Billboard, Rolling Stone and more.

Rising superstar G Flip makes the kind of high-powered rock/pop music that could only come from the heart and mind of a drummer. Their sophomore album, DRUMMER, released mid-last year, soared to #1 on the ARIA charts and won 2 ARIA awards. The album also broke records with 7 songs in triple j’s Hottest 100, including “The Worst Person Alive” at #2, while earlier this year G covered Taylor Swift’s “Cruel Summer” for their Like A Version. Currently on their DRUMMER Tour, May will see G tour the US, which includes stops at Governor’s Ball and Hangout Music Festival as well as co-headline shows with The Beaches, followed by headlining dates in the UK and performance slots at Reading and Leeds Festival.

Australia’s queen of pop, Peach PRC, will be taking the stage in her old stomping grounds off the back of her biggest sold-out headline shows to date and the release of her latest single, “Secret”. And get ready to turn up the heat because Baby Gravy is joining the party! Baby Gravy AKA Yung Gravy and bbno$; have been collaborating since 2017 and have released three joint albums full of swagger.

Spin Off will be the first Australian stop for UK baroque indie five-piece, The Last Dinner Party when they bring their iconic live show, haunting melodies and explosive choruses to our shores this winter. Conceived during a wine-stained evening in Brixton, their live shows lead audiences through soaring crescendos and pin-drop silences, gathering a fervent and ever growing following with each performance. In the first half of 2024, they released their debut album Prelude to Ecstasy, won the BRIT Rising Star Award, BBC Radio 1’s Sound of 2024, and landed triple j’s feature album on its week of release. The rest of the year will see them play Primavera, Glastonbury and Roskilda Festival before heading down under, where intense demand for their Australian headline dates has already seen all venues upgraded.

Also making the trip to Adelaide is US singer-songwriter Michael Marcagi, set to deliver an authentic blend of folk-rock storytelling, rooted in age-old American musical traditions. Considered one of the most exciting rock acts in Australia, catch Old Mervs when they hit Spin Off with epic hooks and breezy guitars in tow, or groove to Newcastle favs Rum Jungle with their unique blend of psych surf rock and alt-pop, whereas proud First Nations artist Miss Kaninna is set to bring her explosive, unapologetic BLAK POP energy to life.

Make your way to the Sound Archive, a dedicated dance and electronic music area presented by Divide, featuring a custom-designed stage, production and dance space for an immersive experience. One of the most in-demand artists around, Swedish producer DJ Seinfeld will headline the stage with his diverse and energetic set. Prepare for deep cuts of jazz-tipped house and UK garage mixes from one of Melbourne’s newest and most exciting DJs, Sam Alfred, and explore the sexy Y2K techno music of jamesjamesjames with his catchy hooks and pounding bass lines. Dive into the realm of Club Angel with the moodier side of Jungle and Speed Garage with tight drums, sampled stabs and infectious vocals. Catch Kaytetye producer RONA. as she merges country and place with synths and melodies that pack an emotional punch, after FUKHED delivers one of her boisterous sets filled with relentless techno this July! Primed to set the stage alight is Sydney’s supernova Willo, channelling her sonic artistry through a filter of bright, energetic soundscapes. And make sure you’re there to witness a stack of resident DJs from Divide when they open up the floor.

You know what to do! Message your crew and make your plans to experience these top-notch artists together this winter!

Australian singer songwriter Emily Barker returns home and turns her lyrical gaze inwards on filmic new album

‘Fragile as Humans’

“Fragile as humans and made of who we love…”

LISTEN TO

FRAGILE AS HUMANS ALBUM

“Barker’s writing has never been so pin sharp”  —MOJO ★★★★

The first song Emily Barker recorded for her latest record, Fragile as Humans, was its title track. To capture the “hyper-real recording” he desired, producer Luke Potashnick surrounded Barker with microphones at The Wool Hall, an impressive sixteenth century stone building converted into a studio by Tears For Fears in the early ’80s. She accompanied herself on Potashnick’s 1938 Gibson L37 archtop guitar. They recorded six takes, but the first was the best.

Written and recorded as her time living in the UK was coming to a close, Fragile as Humans sees Barker turn her lyrical gaze inwards. The expansive themes of her previous album, A Dark Murmuration of Words (released 2020), are replaced by an empathetic concern for matters more personal, familial, closer to home.

Feathered Thing was written while she navigated cumulative grief following a miscarriage. “It’s basically about grieving an idea or imagined future,” she clarifies of the song, the central image inspired by Emily Dickinson’s poem ‘“Hope” is the thing with feathers’. Commencing gently, with oscillating piano and distant drums, the arrangement gradually transforms into an instrumental dervish of vibrant strings and cymbal crashes. Throughout, Barker’s vocals float and hover like a slipstreaming feather.

“I had this idea of putting Emily out front, diving further into what her voice could do and exploring much quieter parts of her voice,” Potashnick explains. “Every single line had to be faultless, otherwise the illusion and the contract between her and the listener would collapse.”

Barker’s introduction to Potashnick had come via their mutual friend, producer and engineer Dom Monks (Big Thief, Nick Cave, Laura Marling). Barker shared some demos she’d been working on and fondly recalls, “Luke noted my harmonic choices and lyrics – two aspects I’d worked particularly hard at – and asked what sort of album I’d like to make.”

Potashnick set about placing each song under the microscope, line by line. “I’d never spent so long working on the songs with a producer before and really trusted Luke with his background in songwriting,” Barker reflects. “The songs were made stronger through him pushing me to dig deeper, to tweak a part, to substantiate a choice.”

Barker worked on editing the songs while touring the States with Mary Chapin Carpenter, performing and refining them on the road. On her return she was ready to begin recording.

The album’s calling card, the filmic single Wild to be Sharing This Moment, introduced the production ideas: “We wanted to push the dynamics, so it could be intimate in parts and cinematic in others,” Barker reveals, “whilst also exercising restraint; creating tension.”

Ahead of the Fragile as Humans songwriting sessions, Barker wrote the word ‘EXPERIMENT!’ on a postcard and pinned it to a cork board in her writing room alongside family photos, postcards of Aretha Franklin and Red-tailed black cockatoos, and “a strip of paper from my niece wishing me a happy day”. This word, in all caps, served as a reminder for Barker to challenge herself creatively and actively pursue the unknown: “I wanted to favour the odd and less obvious lyric, chord progression, melody.”

The closing track, Acisoma, began as an imagined question to Sir David Attenborough about life and death, but soon metamorphosed into something completely different. “I sat at the piano and moved my fingers around trying not to think about it too much,” she recounts. “Some chords fell into a loose order, I set my voice free to roam and hit record on my iPhone. Listening back to my sketch, it didn’t sound like anything I’d written before – my word [EXPERIMENT!] had infiltrated my process.”

When it came to recording Acisoma, Potashnick revealed—just before hitting RECORD—that the microphone he’d set up was the one Dom Monks had used on Nick Cave’s vocals at Alexandra Palace. “I loved the sound of Idiot Prayer – using that very same mic lent me an appropriate mood for capturing the song.”

Potashnick’s vision is present throughout the album: the meditative, introverted Loneliness was a song Barker had envisioned with full-band production, but Potashnicks’s instinct was to keep it minimal: a felted piano, a dulcimer and a trio of strings to add haunting textures. Barker acknowledges, “Luke got it right…it’s lonelier this way.”

Half of the album’s tracks are solo, Barker accompanying herself either on guitar or piano. These songs were recorded first and then she was joined by the session players – Tim Harries (electric and double bass/piano/string arrangements), Tom Visser (drums) and Richard Causon (keys) – at The Wool Hall, tracking the remaining songs in a matter of days.

Album opener With Small We Start showcases the band, the song’s warm acoustic aesthetic drawing the listener into Barker’s discourse on the benefits of concentrating on the simple things in life.

Call it a Day chronicles Emily’s positive experiences – friendships, music connections – from two-plus decades spent living in the UK.

“Making this record was a beautiful way to wrap up my 21 years of living in the UK before heading home to WA,” she points out.

As a teenager, Barker left Western Australia, with an acoustic guitar and a backpack, first arriving in England in the summer of 2000. She has previously written entire albums about longing for home, but Fragile as Humans was inspired and written in both hemispheres: during a writing residency in Stroud, while people-watching at London’s Kings Cross station and upon returning to WA following the state’s strict, pandemic-related border closures.

The ten songs on Fragile as Humans take us on a deep dive into the human condition, an unflinching self-examination of grief, pain, loneliness and loss, at the same time sparkling with hope, optimism and connection.

“If I could choose one word for people to hold in their minds as they listen to this album,” Emily muses, “that word would be: compassion.”

Fragile as Humans is scheduled for release on 3 May through Everyone Sang / Kartel Music Group.

written by the partae

60,000 tickets for this year’s “France Edition” have already been snapped up by eager AIRBEAT ONE fans, and now organizers are excited to release the full lineup for this year’s festival.

An incredible 228 artists are on the festival lineup including DJ MAG TOP 100 headline acts such as Afrojack, Alok, Angerfist, Techno Queen Charlotte de Witte, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, Oliver Heldens, R3HAB, Tiesto, Timmy Trumpet, Vini Vici and W&W among hundreds of other DJ superstars.

This year’s exciting theme is “Vive La France”, and from 10th to 14th July 2024, AIRBEAT ONE will be transporting the aura of France to the Neustadt-Glewe airfield. The electronic music world will join together to celebrate the 21st edition of one of Europe’s largest and most eagerly anticipated festivals. With more than 70,000 music fans per day, and over 225,000 fans across the five-day event, the festival city being built in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, will for five days become the fourth largest city across the region.

More than 60,000 tickets have already been sold for a festival that’s still months away, and to add excitement to anticipation, and reward fans, organizers now release the full 228-artist lineup.

For countless years, the AIRBEAT ONE Main Stage with its unforgettably monstrous dimensions, 180 meters wide and 50 meters tall, has been an eye-catching mesmerizing sight, with festival fans often visibly stunned by its sheer size. Along with its incredible scale, the Main Stage every year welcomes the world’s biggest DJs and acts onto the stage to perform for the sell-out crowd. Ocean Alley premiere ‘Yellow Mellow’ 10 year anniversary live session

Australian rockers Ocean Alley today mark the 10-year anniversary of their beloved debut EP Yellow Mellow, with a live re-recording of its six tracks now premiering via YouTube.

A collection of hazy and funky sounds, Yellow Mellow is stamped with early hallmarks of Ocean Alley’s now distinct sound – infused with psychedelic instrumentation, dub and plenty of groove, not to mention the essence of DIY and the garage they rehearsed in. The live video session sees the six-piece finesse the EP with their matured style, not so much reinventing as reinvigorating the record that set them onto their otherworldly trajectory.

For those who weren’t lucky enough to catch Ocean Alley gigging in pubs and bars on the Northern Beaches in those early days, Yellow Mellow was a gateway. Its title track was a firm fan favourite with its playful lyrics and sound, and over the last decade has become a standout for listeners and particularly live audiences – amassing over 70 million streams to date. A vinyl re-press of the EP saw the record reach #2 on the ARIA Top 20 Australian Albums and #41 on the ARIA Top 50 Albums overall in February this year.

Backing up a momentous 2023, Ocean Alley kicked off the first quarter of this year with vigor – hitting the road for a seven-date Australian Coast Tour that wrapped up last weekend after selling 35,000 tickets across Hobart, Torquay, Wollongong, Adelaide, Bribie Island and Margaret River. It follows their hugely successful run of nine shows last year, selling out huge local venues such as Melbourne’s John Cain Arena, Sydney’s Hordern Pavilion, Brisbane’s Riverstage and Perth’s Red Hill Auditorium, adding extra dates nationally plus a show at Auckland’s Spark Arena for a total of 47,000 tickets sold.

Most of this year will be spent touring internationally, firstly heading to North America with The Grogans for 17 shows in June. The band have already sold out dates in New York, LA, San Francisco and Philadelphia, plus surpassed ticket sales of 20,000. In August, they make their way to the UK and Europe for 15 shows supported by Hockey Dad; Roundhouse in London has sold out with an extra date added, and O2 Victoria Warehouse in Manchester was upgraded and sold out.

These huge international showruns follow the revival of Ocean Alley’s 6x Platinum single ‘Confidence’, which re-entered the ARIA Top 50 Singles Chart in December last year after going viral on TikTok globally, and eventually climbed to #19. Internationally, the track cracked the US Billboard Hot Alternative Songs (#13), Hot Rock Songs (#21), Hot Rock & Alternative Songs (#26), UK’s Independent Singles Chart (#6), New Zealand’s Top 40 Singles Chart (#3) and Ireland’s Single Chart (#29).

Over the last 12 months, Ocean Alley proved themselves to be one of Australia’s most exciting musical exports, taking the world by storm with their dynamic live performances, infectious melodies and faultless musicianship. Their catalogue is approaching a billion streams, with nine singles accredited in Australia and New Zealand with sales certified Gold or higher. Continuing to grow their devoted following both at home and abroad, the six-piece are solidifying their place as one of Australia’s most beloved and influential bands, and are poised to make an indelible mark on the global music scene for years to come.
