LANY Lights Up Hordern Pavilion with Unforgettable Show and Emotional Highs

LANY transformed Sydney’s Hordern Pavilion into a haven of dreamy pop beats and heartfelt connections. The setlist, a rollercoaster of emotions, delivered everything fans have come to love about the trio: vulnerability, energy, and a sense of community.

The night opened with the fan-favorite “YOU!”, sparking immediate energy across the venue as Paul Klein and the band emerged from behind white curtains and 007 like spotlights, setting the stage for what felt like therapy on a Wednesday night. This show, part of their long-awaited tour, had been delayed due to Klein’s recent motorcycle accident, adding a layer of poignancy to their return to the stage since their last tour in Sydney in 2022. The crowd was in sync with every beat, and from there, LANY didn’t let up. “ex i never had” and “up to me”brought a mix of nostalgia and fresh energy that’s quintessential to LANY’s style. The wistful “It Even Rains in LA” and the introspective “I Pray” showcased lead singer Paul Klein’s emotional range, leaving fans hanging on every lyric.

In a particularly memorable moment, the band segued into “somewhere / Sugar & Cinnamon”, drawing fans deeper into the introspective core of their music before jumping into fan favorite “care less” from their 2021 album, gg bb xx. Klein’s raw vocal delivery paired with airy melodies set the stage for heartbreak anthems like “Congrats” and the soul-baring “I Don’t Wanna Love You Anymore” making everyone including me grove.

As the setlist progressed, LANY continued to guide the crowd through highs and lows, balancing upbeat anthems with reflective ballads. “dancing in the kitchen”sparked joy and movement, while “pink skies” added a magical atmosphere—complete with a surprise proposal. As the intro to this 2016 hit played, Klein invited a fan on stage with his partner where he got down on one knee, prompting cheers from the sold-out crowd at Hordern.

LANY kept the mellow vibe going with “Alonica”, “Thick and Thin”, and “Out of My League”, while “dna”resonated with deeper emotional undertones. The back-to-back performance of “Super Far / Mean It” brought a jolt of excitement, leading into Klein’s acoustic rendition of “13”, a moment fans had eagerly anticipated. The melodic, minor-key rendition of “Hericane” filled the room with raw emotion, even if played only partially, before the band transitioned seamlessly into “’Cause You Have To”.

The evening’s came with the trio’s powerful nostalgic fan favourite off their 2019 album “Thru These Tears” and “Malibu Nights”, both delivering the full scope of LANY’s signature sound: bittersweet lyrics and lush instrumentals that tug at the heartstrings which are suitable for those are in love or are heartbroken. For the encore, “ILYSB” brought the crowd to a fever pitch, with every word shouted back in a unified, emotional wave. Finally, they closed with the powerful “XXL”, a fitting end to a night that felt larger than life, with Klein diving into the crowd multiple times before the band bid farewell to Hordern in true Lonely Tunes style.

The crowd at Hordern Pavilion was left buzzing, carried by LANY’s effortless transitions between joy and heartache. The show was a reminder of how the band continues to build genuine connections with fans through their music and presence. Every track on the setlist was a perfect piece in the tapestry of an unforgettable evening, proving once again that LANY is more than a band—they’re a shared experience.

REVIEW: Tate McRae – 12 Nov 2024, Hordern Pavilion, Sydney

by the partae November 21, 2024
written by the partae

Photo: Beth Saravo

Words: Zac Farr

THE GREAT POP REVIVAL

Static sounds and flickering lights… the screen teased retro super film as the subs began to tease the heart… a voice over transported us into a special place… the Hordern was ready… ready to witness something magical… an eagerness somewhat like when man walked on the moon filled the room… and there she was… the twenty one year old icon… taking her rightful place as the future of pop… taking us to brand new, magical places.

She doesn’t just have a fantastic vocal range or songs that have become the anthems of millions of her fans lives. Tate McRae brings everything pop is onto one stage. The dancers, the sas, the sexy, the songs, the stage design… she has created her own little world and invited us along for the ride and it is no accident. We owe it to the sacrifice she made being placed in the spotlight at 13, a sacrifice that has equip her with a wealth of knowledge throughout all fascists of the industry to add spice where it is needed, write songs with depth, ensure her people are loved with rooftop pop ups and collude dance, lights and ballads to strike the hearts of anyone who found themselves in the Hordern Pavilion at 9pm on a Tuesday night.

Tate showed off her spectacular taste having Seattle born Charlieonnafriday open the night with a wonderful little set full of his hit singles such as Enough, I’m not crazy and After Hours as well showing of pieces of his new album WILD CHILD with tracks such as When it Rains filling the room with pure joy. His eclectic sound that merges pop, country tones and a mellow hip hop forces heads to nod and the hips to sway. The perfect to vibe to warm up the Mcrazies for the main event.

Opening with the heaving hitting Think later had the sea of Jerseys, high ponies and stuffed teddies going word for word alongside her from the get go. With vibrant dance breaks and guitar solos she and her team brought their A-game showing of her latest Album THINK LATER in all of the awe inspiring ways. She also gave the day ones some love including the tracks uh oh and she’s all I wanna be as well as the song that really put her on the musical map at sixteen you broke me first. There is something quite special when someone can bring together the die hards, the fathers, the broken hearted and the joy filled to sing together under one roof tracks like exes next to guilty conscience really emphasising how different people, from different worlds can have such powerful shared experiences.

Overall, Tate was five stars, she inspired the woman to own who they are, back each other, enjoy where they are at and being a little bitter sometimes isn’t such a bad thing. She currently holds a prominent space in the pop scene and with The Kid Laroi on her arm partnered with some of lasts years biggest and best pop songs there is not much stopping her from stealing all of Australia’s hearts.

BOBBY UNCLE shares new track ‘THE WAY YOU STAND’

by the partae November 20, 2024
written by the partae
Sydney’s BOBBY UNCLE shares new track ‘THE WAY YOU STAND’ from debut EP MIMES MISS THE BEACH

Continuing to delight with his own brand of indie-pop sounds, Sydney songwriter and performer Bobby Uncle has returned with a new single titled ‘The Way You Stand’.

Taken from the artist’s forthcoming debut EP Mimes Miss The Beach, ‘The Way You Stand’ serves as a great gateway into Bobby Uncle’s songwriting style, and the evolution of his soundscapes as we head into the end of the year. Leaning into ‘80s synth and ‘70s guitar-rock influences, ‘The Way You Stand’ encompasses the intoxicating feeling one gets when they come across someone who completely mesmerises them.

Following on from tracks including ‘February (I Know)’, ‘Tragedy Delight’ and ‘Coffee’, ‘The Way You Stand’ is a fun and immersive release from Bobby Uncle that provides cool insight into the rest of the EP project.

“I thought to myself, what is a silly characteristic about someone that makes them so special and in a league of their own, compared to everyone else? I thought, well obviously, the way they stand. I mean, who compliments someone by the way they stand? Yet, if you think about it, the way someone stands can really make them stand out from a crowd. Just look at supermodels and the way they stand on the billboards, or a Hollywood superstar in a movie. You can point them out even if they are walking with a stream of people. Nonetheless, the song is meant to be fun, energetic and to capture that good feeling of a summer love, hence why the lyrics are quite playful.” BOBBY UNCLE

‘The Way I Stand’ was recorded in Neutral Bay, Sydney, at Bobby Uncle’s home studio. The beginnings of the song were coming together in December 2023, though he only returned to it in September 2024 to finish it off into the bright final result we hear today.

Bobby Uncle has been on a strong upwards trajectory since emerging back in 2021 – with significant support from radio and editorial outlets alike. Previous single’s ‘Summertime (Make It Happen)’ and ‘Coffee’ both saw heavy airplay on stations such as triple J, triple J Unearthed, iHeart Radio, SYN and 4ZZZ; and have been praised by tastemakers such as Rolling Stone Australia, Scenestr, Frankie Magazine and AAA Backstage upon release.

PRAISE

“Sydney’s Bobby Uncle has brewed up “Coffee” – a fun pop single about sleepless nights over a crush who doesn’t feel the same way.”

ROLLING STONE AUSTRALIA (‘Coffee’, 2024)

“Bobby Uncle reels you in with luscious melodies and an upbeat tone – loving this new one <3”

TRIPLE J UNEARTHED, ANIKA LUNA (‘Coffee’, 2024)

“Your voice goes in some really interesting and unexpected places here. Bring on that EP!”

TRIPLE J, ABBY BUTLER (‘Summertime (Make It Happen)’, 2024)

“‘Coffee’ weaves through many different moods and tones throughout its runtime – creating a consistently compelling listen, filled to the brim with catchy ear worms that are sure to stick around long after the song has finished.”

THE ROCKPIT (‘Coffee’, 2024)

“Here, whirring synths accompany Uncle’s voice, which on the chorus becomes distorted with a hazy vocoder flair. Pulling together such eclectic sounds, Uncle coalesces the track around an insatiable, ever-catchy rhythm, and some truly earwormy refrains.”

PENNYWISE + MILLENCOLIN – AUSTRALIAN TOUR 2025

by the partae November 19, 2024
written by the partae

PENNYWISE + MILLENCOLIN CO-HEADLINE AUSTRALIAN TOUR 2025

In 2025, two of the all-time punk greats will return to Australian stages, with pioneering California dynamos PENNYWISE and beloved Swedish trailblazers MILLENCOLIN set to co-headline a huge run down under next February and March.

With both metro and regional shows on the cards next year, PENNYWISE and MILLENCOLIN will kick off on Saturday 22 February in Wollongong, before hitting Newcastle, Sunshine Coast, Brisbane, Sydney and Adelaide, and closing out on Wednesday 5 March in Perth.

A band synonymous with punk rock and thought-provoking lyricism, PENNYWISE erupted out of the vibrant coastal setting of Hermosa Beach in California with their self-titled debut album in 1991, ultimately going on to change the sonic landscape and cultivate a sweltering legacy via their unique blend of DIY spirit, hardcore, skate punk and SoCal pop punk. Renowned for their ability to fuse raw emotion and ravenous energy with themes of empowerment and rallying calls for change, PENNYWISE encapsulate the essence of rebellion with anthems like Bro Hymn and Fuck Authority, while also remaining as fundamental to punk rock and hardcore as stage dives and guitars.

With twelve studio albums, including their Certified Gold records About Time (1995), Full Circle (1997) and Straight Ahead (1999), PENNYWISE have also showcased their formidable onstage presence across the globe for decades alongside the biggest names in the scene, most recently supporting Dropkick Murphys for a huge North American tour, and also for Aussie audiences last year as part of Good Things Festival. A band fluent in balancing the spirit of punk alongside subversion and celebration, PENNYWISE are primed to bring the revolution to Australian audiences in 2025.

For over 30 years, Swedish icons MILLENCOLIN have vividly put punk on the map. With their original lineup still intact since forming back in 1992, MILLENCOLIN‘s debut album, 1994’s Tiny Tunes, opened the floodgates that would shape the quartet’s staggering career to come. Skyrocketing their popularity courtesy of the 2000 full-length Pennybridge Pioneers, the rock-infused dive beyond the band’s earlier skate punk and ska leanings would ultimately spawn iconic tracks like No Cigar and Penguins & Polarbears, achieving infamy with No Cigar‘s addition to the soundtrack for Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2, and ultimately finding the overall album scoring an ARIA Platinum certification.

One of punk rock’s most famed and favourite acts to emerge out of Europe, MILLENCOLIN have played thousands of shows around the world, including as part of Warped Tour, Soundwave Festival and Big Day Out, multiple sold out headline performances, tours with the likes of Bad Religion and The Offspring, and, most recently for Australians, at Good Things Festival in 2022. And never ones to rest on their laurels,  MILLENCOLIN also continue to finesse their sonic creations, seen vividly via their 2019 album SOS, exploring political and darker themes without sacrificing their explosive energy and gripping melodics.

Do not miss your chance to witness PENNYWISE and MILLENCOLIN live in action in 2025, secure your spot to one of the biggest co-headline events of the year!

Cory Marks Announces Sophomore Album and Tour

by the partae November 17, 2024
written by the partae

Genre-blending Canadian musician Cory Marks has announced the release of his second full-length album, Sorry For Nothing, set to arrive on December 6th via Better Noise Music on all streaming platforms. An unapologetic double-barrelled blast of 13 songs, equally divided between roots country and arena-rock, marks the follow-up to his acclaimed debut album, Who I Am, which featured the Canadian Platinum-certified track “Outlaws & Outsiders”.

Cory showcases his dual musicality with two new track releases, “Fast As I Can” and “Whiskey For Sale”. “Fast As I Can” is an exciting, feel-good country track with a fun, foot-stomping chorus that will have you hooked and singing along to every word. “Whiskey For Sale” is a perfect blend of bluegrass, country, and a heavy rock chorus, narrating a love story that has taken a turn.

“The record is really who I am,” says Cory Marks. “The title says it all. I love rock and I love country. It’s a kick in the ass, the good, the bad and the ugly, the ups and downs of life, adding that little bit of fuel to the fire to keep you fighting, to keep your eye on the prize. There are songs for partying, songs to look back on life and have a good cry, love songs…something for everyone.”

Produced by longtime collaborator Kevin Churko (Shania Twain, Ozzy Osbourne, Five Finger Death Punch, Papa Roach), Kile Odell (Nita Strauss, David Draiman), and Andrew Baylis (Jelly Roll, Brantley Gilbert), Sorry for Nothing is highlighted by guest appearances from Sully Erna (Godsmack), Mick Mars (Mötley Crüe), Travis Tritt and DL (Bad Wolves). Pre-orders are available now on CD or digital download at https://corymarks.ffm.to/sfn.

In addition to the upcoming album release, Cory is looking forward to heading to the U.S. later this fall to open for multi-platinum rock group Theory of A Deadman. The “Unplugged” tour runs October 29th to November 23rd with Cory performing an acoustic set featuring songs from Sorry For Nothing and Who I Am, tickets are available now HERE. See full list of dates below.

Cory has previously toured North America with diverse artists including Five Finger Death Punch, ZZ Top, Travis Tritt and Brantley Gilbert, while also having joined Nickelback on the main stage at the annual Boots and Hearts festival in Toronto in 2023.

SHIHAD Announce The Final Tour

by the partae November 13, 2024
written by the partae
SHIHAD
The Final Tour
 Loud Forever 1988 – 2025
With Special Guests Battlesnake & BodyJar (Melb Only)
Tickets on sale 9am Local Time Nov 13 from via shihad.com

Forged in the fires of 1988’s thrash metal scene, Wellington’s SHIHAD quickly evolved into one of Australia’s most beloved bands. SHIHAD (Jon Toogood, Karl Kippenberger, Phil Knight, Tom Larkin) has sold over a quarter of a million records, released ten studio albums, received multiple ARIA nominations, won countless Aotearoa Music Awards and toured endlessly through the world’s most loved clubs, festivals, and arenas. Touring with metal icons like Faith No More, Tool, Back Sabbath, Motorhead and one of their biggest early influences, AC/DC. Live is where SHIHAD is truly an oversized presence.

In 2010 SHIHAD were inducted into the Aotearoa’s Music Hall of Fame, firmly establishing themselves as New Zealand’s biggest rock band.

With gaps between albums increasing, growing commitments outside the band, and band members’ inability to give SHIHAD the time, focus and dedication it needed and deserved, they made the hard call to end the band. While opinions within differ, they are united in agreement that half-assing SHIHAD was never an option.

To celebrate thirty-six years of memories and milestones, the band announces Loud Forever – The Final Tour.

“We’ve had as much fun as we’ve had moments of disappointment and of anger,” Karl says. “But we’ve also had some real special moments.”

“The fundamental chemistry and makeup of what makes SHIHAD special and what makes SHIHAD work requires certain things to be in place,” Tom explains. “When you can’t sustain those things or plan for those things, it takes away from SHIHAD being something that makes sense. It’s about a shared commitment and a shared energy.”

Phil muses. “You know, personal relationships and professional work don’t always survive forever. But we’ve lived it all. We really have. We’ve lived the life that so many musicians would give their right arm for.”

“We need to pay homage to the legacy of this band, because it’s meant so much to us and also to the people that have supported us,” Jon says, before adding, “We’re gonna fucking hit it!”

SHIHAD’s songbook is teeming with iconic tunes like Run, The General Electric, La La Land, Pacifier, My Mind’s Sedate, Deb’s Night Out, Gimme Gimme, Wait and See and the brutal I Only Said (1993), their highest charting single which pounded its way to No.3. And, you can’t forget Home Again, their instant classic that became an anthem not just for SHIHAD, but for all Kiwis abroad.

The upcoming LOUD FOREVER tour offers both the band and its nation of fans the opportunity of a fittingly loud and raucous farewell.

Charlie Needs Braces is back with a new single ‘This Land’
+ Accompanying collage video
+ Announces NYAA WA (Take Care) Album for 2025

Playful with a powerful message, Charlie Needs Braces is back with a new single ‘This Land’ that calls for everyone to learn the history and heritage of the land you are on, and announces an upcoming album NYAA WA (meaning Take Care) out Thursday 20 February. The new single is accompanied by a collage inspired video working with collaborator and director Master Kapow, following on from her last single ‘Dyarrubin’, and is out Wednesday 13 September. Getting ready for a summer of live shows, Charlie and Miri will perform at Djerriwarrh Festival and The Town this November, and join The Teskey Brothers in January 2025 for A Day On The Green.

A proud GuriNgai woman and direct descendant of Bungaree and Matora, Charlie’s new single celebrates First Nations people’s connection to Country and the importance of learning the individual history behind the names and places. In true Charlie fashion a lush soundscape of their signature harmonies and bird calls of Australian wildlife, set to her looping drum beats. ‘‘This Land’ is inspired by the deep meaning and stories embedded in the Aboriginal names of places. Each name carries a history, a connection to the land, and valuable information about the area. Through this song, I wanted to highlight the importance of these Indigenous names and the stories they tell, encouraging all of us to reconnect with and respect the true heritage of the places we live in.’ – Charlie Needs Braces

Created and directed by Master Kapow, the ‘This Land’ video clip was created collage style with layered images of animals and plants from old National Geographic magazines, maps and street signs, and an Aboriginal map highlighting the traditional names of places in Australia. Miri and Charlie are layered amongst the patchworked landscape, travelling to different places and planets in the universe.

‘The goal was to create a visual experience that mirrors the song’s message—celebrating the deep, interconnected stories of the land. It was a challenging and slow process but so rewarding after seeing the final product, and I’m proud of how it all came together by the end.’ – Master Kapow, Director and Videographer

Charlie Needs Braces has drawn in audiences across Australia, her energetic musical landscapes weaving together stories and language. She is also known for her work with Casey Donovan, The Teskey Brothers, The Seven Ups, and Tek Tek Ensemble. Her debut album ‘Saltwater People’ saw her single and video clip featured on RAGE, was triple j Unearthed Artists of the Week, and was recently featured on the ABC documentary ‘Changing Tides’ as part of a NAIDOC week special. TYLER HILTON ANNOUNCES AUSTRALIAN RETURN IN 2025

U.S. MUSICIAN AND ACTOR TYLER HILTON ANNOUNCES LONG-AWAITED AUSTRALIAN RETURN IN 2025

Set to bring his beloved catalogue of music, including this year’s NO MAN’S LAND EP, American singer-songwriter and actor Tyler Hilton will be back in Australia this summer.

Touring for the first time since 2017, Hilton’s Australian return is long-anticipated, as much as it is an excellent opportunity for new waves of fans to connect with the artist through his acclaimed live show. Performing music from across his entire catalogue, including favourites featured in the iconic One Tree Hill series, Hilton is coming back to Australia packed with all the goods.

Releasing No Man’s Land in July, Hilton has been revelling in a new creative chapter of his career. In the years that have passed since his last Australian visit, Hilton has been kept busy with a variety of projects across music and film – including composition work for the Margot Robbie-produced film My Old Ass and writing his first children’s book, Daddy Live In Concert, due for release in 2025.

The release of No Man’s Land signalled a return to rich sonic form for Hilton and from it, the excitement for Hilton’s eventual return to stages soon followed. For Australian fans, this tour is a way for Hilton to reconnect with his “favourite place on Earth”.

“I have been DYING to get back to Oz since I came for the first time ever in ‘17.  Meant to get right back then the pandemic happened and it took a sec for me to get everything back on track. I had no concept of Australia before I came. No real idea of the culture or what the cities looked like.. it just hadn’t really spent much time in my brain. I landed in Sydney, hit Brisbane, Adelaide, Melbourne, and Perth and my life was changed. I was like, “What is this magical place??”

The food! The people! The beaches! The coffee! I still drink flat whites as my daily drink to this day after that trip. I bought an acoustic guitar there from a local luthier to help commemorate my time there. I wanted to hold onto it so badly. Anyway, the point is, I’m BEYOND excited to be returning and so thankful to still have a fan base there to justify the trip!!”  TYLER HILTON

Regarding his return to music via the No Man’s Land project, Hilton is open about how creating this record reignited a passion for his artistry and importantly, his connection to the performance aspect of the craft.

Re-emerging from the period of pandemic-induced downtime, as well as time spent on other projects and simply enjoying family life, Hilton has a hunger for being in front of audiences sharing in music together once more.

“I remembered how important playing live was to my soul and my artistry, and how hard it was to replicate anything close to that musically in a studio setting. Not to mention reconnecting with the fans.. who I missed so much during the pandemic!

Once I started I didn’t want to stop and figured I should let that energy carry me around the world for the first time in a long time to reconnect, sing old songs, and share some new ones. This is truly a tour unlike any other I’ve ever done. I’ve never missed the fans more or appreciated them more fully.” TYLER HILTON

For a whole generation of fans, Hilton’s notoriety is timeless – his role as Chris Keller on the iconic teen sports drama One Tree Hill enshrined his position within the legacy of 2000s US television; while his accolades as a performer have continued to grow.

Whether it was portraying a young Elvis Presley in the Academy Award winning film Walk The Line (a film Hilton also featured on the soundtrack of); appearing in Taylor Swift’s iconic ‘Teardrops On My Guitar’ music video; or going on to achieve two Top 40 Billboard Singles and touring with the likes of Swift, Keith Urban, John Mayer and more, Tyler Hilton has maintained a strong following and presence between the worlds of film and music.

Tyler’s tour marks the first shows in Australia for the leading independent concert and entertainment production company MRG LIVE which is based in Canada.  The MRG Group has offices and venues in Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal, Victoria and New York; operates 9 venues and 10 hospitality properties.  The company produces over 500 concerts a year with a wide range performers and is expanding its activity to Australia under the leadership of Josh Lane who had previously been an agent in Australia for over 10 years and is now based in Toronto working MRG on developing an Australian-North American talent pipeline for the company.

PRAISE

“His talent for creating moments of shared vulnerability and joy with his listeners is undeniable.”
MELODIC MAGAZINE

“…carefully crafted arrangements and considered song structures, the record is an intimate piece of Americana…”
XSNOISE

“…tantalizing wisps of velvety momentum, harmonic fluency, and the marvelously textured surfaces of Tyler Hilton’s dulcet voice.”
