Haviah Mighty today shares her latest single, ‘Flamenco‘, from her highly anticipated Stock Exchange mixtape due out later this fall. The sensual, upbeat track embodying the striking energy of its namesake art form also features multiple Latin Grammy Award-winning artist, Mala Rodríguez. LISTEN HERE.
Fresh off a 2021 Prism Prize win for her powerful video for ‘Thirteen‘ illustrating the painful journey of Black people in North America, Haviah Mighty and Mala Rodríguez have teamed up with producer Taabu who is also known for his previous work on Haviah’s reggae & dancehall-inspired standout, ‘Wishy Washy‘. Says Haviah,“With this one, I wanted to try something different! Inspired by the cultural influences behind flamenco, this song allowed me to be a guest in a new genre. Mala Rodríguez really brought this record home – her verse added authenticity, sensuality and pizzazz. She has a great voice and message, and with her Spanish roots, I felt that she spoke to the energy of the song more directly than I ever could. It’s a feel-good song, with the intention of resonating on a dance floor, with the bass pulsing as heavily as the sweat on one’s brow as they hit their moves. This song is quite literally a vibe!”
A multiple Latin GRAMMY winner, Mala Rodríguez has held a prolific career for over two decades, collaborating with the likes of Big Freedia, Stylo G, and Juan Magán to being featured on Former President Barack Obama’s Summer Spotify Playlist with her song, ‘Yo Marco El Minuto’, and named as one of NPR’s ‘200 Greatest Songs by 21st Century Women‘. Haviah Mighty’s forthcoming Stock Exchangemixtape is the first full-length follow-up since her critically acclaimed, Polaris Prize-winning album, 13th Floor. Over the last year, singles from the mixtape have been building momentum, garnering praise from the likes of Rolling Stone, Pitchfork, Fader, Complex, The Source, HotNewHipHop, Clash, triple j, Consequence, and more. Stock Exchange includes collaborations from artists all over the world including her recent powerful statement with the UK’s Yizzy (‘Protest‘), collaborations with US rappers Jalen Santoy (‘Way Too Fast‘), Old Man Saxon (‘Antisocial‘), fellow Toronto artists TOBi (‘Good On My Own Tonight‘), Grandtheft (‘Avocado‘), and now Barcelona‘s Rodríguez (‘Flamenco‘), with more to be announced soon. The mixtape’s title refers to a reckoning Haviah had while reflecting on how artists are now forced more and more to validate their value based on data (followers, streams, subscribers) and with that shift, the feeling we are losing a part of the authentic human-to-human experience of music. Stay tuned for its release.
