Following the announcement of his seventh studio album ‘Things Were Never Good If They’re Not Good Now’ (set for release on the 12th of July via End Times Music), Canadian artist Donovan Woods has shared the announcement of his first trip down under; with a 7 date tour on Australian shores set for June 2024.

The Juno award-winning singer/songwriter will be hitting stages in Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne, Newcastle, Sydney and Brisbane this year – with supports yet to be announced. Throughout his distinguished career, Donovan Woods has built a devoted following who cling to the songwriter’s every word. Never one to mince them, Woods is one of music’s most vulnerable storytellers and on his forthcoming studio album, Donovan takes that a step further.

Honest and unflinching, on Things Were Never Good If They’re Not Good Now Woods takes a long look inside and isn’t necessarily thrilled with what he sees. For an artist who isn’t afraid to bear his soul, this is as emotionally gritty as he has ever been. Long known as a masterful storyteller, Woods is at his absolute best on Things Were Never Good If They’re Not Good Now.

Since he released his first album a decade ago, Donovan Woods’ blend of folk, country and pop has resonated with audiences all over the world. In recent years, the acclaimed, award-winning singer-songwriter has seen his profile grow with his breakthrough album, Without People. Touring behind (2020’s) Without People saw Woods play to his largest audiences to date, including a stint opening for New Jersey-based retro rockers Gaslight Anthem on their recent reunion tour.

He currently sports an impressive 741k+ monthly listeners on Spotify, with over 105m streams for his track ‘Portland, Maine’ (which was featured on season 1 of The CW’s ‘Legacies’, and was originally recorded and performed by Tim Mcgraw).

Donovan is partnering with Support Act for the tour and donating $1 for every ticket sold, supporting music industry professionals across the country with crisis relief, mental health and wellbeing support.  With a big year in front of him in the lead up to and following the release of his upcoming LP, these intimate shows in June are not to be missed!

Slinkee Minx – ‘This Is Your Night’, ready to electrify the dancefloor

by the partae May 23, 2024
written by the partae

Australian noughties dance-pop icons Slinkee Minx are set to drop their first major release for 2024 – ‘This Is Your Night’, a modern spin on a classic 90s club anthem. This explosive radio-friendly release unleashes fresh flirty vibes to the dancefloor and once again showcases why Slinkee Minx remain one of Australia’s best and most enduring female dance music acts.

Few have the history or street cred to bring reworked club anthems like ‘This Is Your Night’ to a new generation of music lovers. Collaborating with legendary Aria award-winning producer James Ash (Rogue Traders), ‘This Is Your Night’ fuses some of the song’s original sounds, with silky upbeat vocals, punchy piano synths, exhilarating drops and an insatiable beat that will get stuck in your head for days! The result is quintessential Slinkee Minx – a signature sound fans have loved since they launched onto the scene two decades ago.

Part of the golden era of dance music in the early 2000s, Slinkee Minx have had multiple successive top ten dance hits both in Australia and internationally, including their unforgettable smash ‘Summer Rain’, continuing to amass millions of music streams worldwide.

Loved equally for their original music and on-point interpretations, ‘This Is Your Night’ is sure to be another Slinkee Minx dancefloor filler!

Tasmania’s MIDDLE PALMS return with ‘FINGERS’

Off the back of their widely successful 2023 single ‘Talk Too Much’, vibrant 4-piece indie-pop-rock ensemble from Hobart, ‘Middle Palms’, today return with their latest single, ‘Fingers’. Inspired by the energy of Australian indie-rock music, ‘Fingers’ explores the difficulties of accepting a relationship with unreciprocated love.

Having quickly amassed north of 40k streams on their recent single, the young band returned to the drawing board to get started on what is likely to be a sensational hit in ‘Fingers’. Drawing inspiration from artists like Spacey Jane, and Ocean Alley, Middle Palms have spent the last few years carving out their own unique sound and connecting with a growing fanbase.

Recorded entirely at their home studio in Hobart (with the exception of the drums), Middle Palms commissioned lead singer Sam’s sister, Erin Sherlock to mix ‘Fingers’, which would go on to be mastered by her friend Thomas Fernando. Musically, the hardship expressed through the lyrics is contrasted beautifully with warm textures and stunning melodies throughout the track resulting in an utterly engaging listening experience.

“The metaphor of “fingers” depicts the mental state of the character as they move forward from the situation.”

Gloam Discusses Growth and Change in 'Hinder'

Gloam Discusses Growth and Change in ‘Hinder’

by the partae May 23, 2024
written by the partae

What inspired the theme of growth, progress, and navigating change in your latest single, “Hinder”?

I’d say that the song itself kind of sparked that. Our creative process is heavily a music-first, vocals-second kind of process. So essentially, I listened to the song on repeat (after Oli and I had workshopped it to where it is now) for a while, trying different melodies over different sections, and deciding what felt right. Before long, I had begun associating certain feelings and memories to the track, which then began to influence the words that ended up being sung on the track. Overall, I wouldn’t say there was a moment where I decided “This is what the song is about,” more of an overarching theme that I sort of connected to these emotions after the fact.

Can you elaborate on the internal conflicts portrayed in “Hinder” that hinder the actualization of self-fulfillment?

It’s tricky to put my finger and explicitly say it was ‘this’ or ‘that’, but I’d say it mostly refers to the stagnancy that comes as a consequence of anxiety and depression. it’s easier to sit with what you have and where you are than it is to get up and create the change that you so badly know you’re craving.

How does “Hinder” differ thematically or musically from your previous work, such as your debut single “Merchant”?

Hinder features quite a fast and driving energy throughout the whole performance, which began as a core element in the songwriting process before there was even any drums or vocals attached. I feel like with this track there was less focus on having a big contrast in dynamics within the song, and more emphasis placed on making a fun, driving, high energy piece of music.

Could you share any anecdotes or stories from the creation process of “Hinder,” particularly regarding its lyrical development?

I wouldn’t say that there was any particularly noteworthy moments in writing the lyrical content for Hinder, so apologies for that. However, I did find myself questioning myself and whether the lyrics I was writing down may have been too cryptic to make any linear sense to listeners. But I guess some self-assurance came from the self-reminder that this is Gloam’s artform, and there is little to no obligation to typical song conventions. I would encourage any other songwriters or artists to take the same mindset; it was quite liberating and really feels as though once you do away with writing to certain deliverables, true creativity starts to occur. At least that has been my experience thus far.

What role does introspection play in your songwriting process, especially when addressing themes as complex as fear, discomfort, and personal growth?

I would say, it plays quite a vague role. I’ll rarely have a specific time, object, or event in mind when writing lyrics. Quite often they tend to be very abstract, with contemplation seeing them revised. It is usually at this step in the process; when I have a clearer idea about how I feel about the songs and what they mean to me, that I’ll attach any sort of meaning or theme to the tracks. This very much applies to the songwriting process of Hinder.

You mentioned drawing inspiration from shoegaze icons like Slowdive and Whirr. How do you infuse your own unique style into the genre, as showcased in “Hinder”?

While we’ve drawn inspiration from lots of the big names in post-rock and shoegaze, we’ve also taken influence from a wide range of bands outside these genres. Oli spent a decent chuck of time around writing and editing the first demos of “Hinder” listening to Death Metal and Post-Black Metal bands such as Suffering Hour and Deafheaven, and I think an amalgamation of all sorts of different sounds make their way into our tunes and help shape our sound in strange ways.

“Hinder” was mixed and mastered by long-time collaborator Cameron Murphy at Opaque Studios. How does Murphy’s involvement contribute to the final sound of the track?

Cam’s input, I feel, is likely to be quickly overlooked. I think we all feel quite ‘new’ to being musicians, in the sense that we aren’t conforming to anything typical of a genre or ‘scene’; we’re writing to a taste that we haven’t done before and is everchanging. Consequently, this can blur the lines between what’s working and what’s not working. Cam has been a great filter along the process to bluntly tell us what is, and what isn’t working. Of course, with a grain of salt though. He’s always on board with our wild ideas, drawing from an array of references that you mightn’t typically put together.

With only a brief tenure on the live circuit, how do you feel your experiences sharing the stage with international and local acts have influenced your musical journey and the sound of Gloam?

The live performance experiences we’ve had over the last couple years have shaped our ambition and drive in huge ways, and have been quite essential in keeping the Gloam music-machine rolling. We’ve been able to experiment and hone into our sound and performance, as well as learn and take inspiration from some really great bands. Big touring groups like Touché Amore, Deafheaven and Movements have been incredible to share the stage with, and have felt like a masterclass in high energy performance and positive attitude, not to mention attention to detail. Though in saying that,  I think we have also learnt just as much from these big international support opportunities as we have from the local bands in the Perth scene. Getting to see how bands around us are growing and shaping their live performances has been hugely motivating and exciting, and is often what pushes us to work harder on how we present and perform our music.

“Hinder” debuted on triple j Unearthed TOPS, showcasing your unique blend of ethereal soundscapes and relatable lyrical theming. How important is it for Gloam to connect with listeners through both musical and lyrical elements?

Strangely enough, I feel that the music is the most powerful vessel in any existing Gloam song, by quite a margin. Because the feeling of each song largely determines the lyrics that follow, it becomes the beacon of the track. We expect that the listener resonates more with the soundscape of the tracks, rather than the literal words being sung.

Can fans expect a similar thematic approach in your upcoming releases, or do you plan to explore new territory with your music?

One of the main takeaways for us from this last writing and recording process is how exciting and rewarding it is to venture into new territory musically. Now that we have established ourselves with a solid foundation in our sound, it’s going to be really exciting to see where we can take it, as well as discovering new tools and strategies to get us there.

How does the process of crafting a single like “Hinder” inform or influence the direction of your future releases and overall musical evolution as a band?

I would say it doesn’t really. We have an EP coming out later in the year which includes “Hinder.” This full record feels a lot more creatively ambitious than what we’ve done previously, some songs sounding similar to Hinder, or our previous self-titled EP and others being far more left-of-centre. Moving forward from this upcoming record, writing has already begun and I think we’re collectively embracing our experimental tendencies a lot more, not just in the songwriting area but with varied tunings, keys and guitar pedals. We’re excited about the musical journey ahead!

Finally, what message or feeling do you hope listeners take away from “Hinder,” and how does it fit into the larger narrative or vision for Gloam’s music?

I think, that we’d hope our listeners feel a sense of calmness after listening to this track (or any of our music). Hinder is a melancholy song that we all feel very at-peace with when performed live and throughout the recording process, despite it’s heavy overtones and distorted characteristics. I don’t think I’d hope our listeners take away any specific message, I’d like to think that they might associate their own message or lesson from the track – something I personally love about consuming music.

From Australia’s acid house infancy to the many reinventions of rave through the 90s and the peak of 00s nightlife, Ministry of Sound will be showcasing an iconic lineup of global legends, whose influence is woven into the fabric of modern club life. Headliners include the godfather of acid rave Danny Rampling (UK), house music pioneer Judge Jules (UK), and legendary DJ/producer Seb Fontaine (UK) – all bringing their 90s mastery.

The Great Southern Slam returning to Adelaide, June 8-10

The Great Southern Slam returning to Adelaide, June 8-10

by the partae May 21, 2024
written by the partae

The world’s biggest roller derby tournament is returning to Adelaide. That’s right – The Great Southern Slam (TGSS) 2024 is a go! Strap yourself in for three days of hard hits, quick feet, and endless good times as the biennial competition returns to the Adelaide Showground over the June long weekend.

From June 8-10, 2024, local, national, and international derby teams will converge on the Adelaide Showground from every corner of Australia and New Zealand to battle it out on the track once more, with 45 teams will competing in 65 games across three divisions.

Hosted by Adelaide Roller Derby, the event will also double as a showcase for local artisans and world-wide skate brands alike, with a marketplace featuring stalls from Adelaide’s “Craft Queen” Calamity Tash to internationally popular skate company Riedell Skates.

To add to the excitement, this year the2024 TGSS Division 1 will act as the inaugural Women’s Flat Track DerbyAssociation (WFTDA) Regional Championships for the Oceania Region, with two teams set to go through to the World Championships held in Portland, Oregon USA in November.

WFTDA, the umbrella organisation for roller derby internationally, launched a new rankings system in June 2023 to create a regionally based competitive structure, with TGSS receiving recognition as the preeminent tournament in the Oceania region.  The region, comprised of Australia and New Zealand, was allocated two spots in the Global Championships, meaning that the top two teams from TGSS will earn themselves a ticket to the Global Champs to be held in Portland, Oregon in November of this year.

The current top five teams vying for the coveted tickets are the respective A teams from Victorian Roller Derby League (VRDL), Brisbane City Rollers (BCR), Sun State Roller Derby (SUN), Adelaide Roller Derby (ADRD), and Perth Roller Derby (VRDL). As the seventh-ranked team internationally, VRDL are the tournament favourites, but homegrown hopefuls ADRD will be looking to repeat their TGSS 2022 results, where they placed second.

ADRD skater and TGSS committee member Alex Knopoff – who plays under the alias ‘Rage Ruthless’ – said: “Adelaide Roller Derby is so excited to be hosting The Great Southern Slam once again. Fifteen years on from our first tournament, TGSS is the must-attend event of the Australia/New Zealand roller derby calendar and it’s fantastic to have that recognised internationally through being selected as the WFTDA Regional Championship for Oceania.

“Putting on a tournament of this scale is a massive undertaking that is only possible due to the hard work of a small group of volunteers – it’s truly a labour of love. On top of that, many of us are also participants, with both our A and B teams in this year’s competition. We (the A team) have been training hard and we’re really hoping to place in the top two to earn our ticket to World Champs.”

Hosted by Adelaide Roller Derby and held at the Adelaide Showground in the heart of South Australia, The GreatSouthern Slam is a biennial roller derby tournament that has attracted over5000 athletes and spectators over the June long weekend. DR. MARTENS X MADEME

by the partae May 20, 2024
written by the partae
  1. MARTENS & MADEME ANNOUNCE THEIR FIRST COLLABORATION WITH STEELY DETERMINATION AND AN OPEN-HEARTED SHOE.

The collection features a chunky 1461 Quad shoe in black or silver with a steel toe exposed through a heart-shaped cut-out.

Unapologetic, fearless, authentic. There’s an undeniable crossover in spirit between Dr. Martens and MadeMe. The femme-forward, straight-talking “it girl” type who serves as a muse for founder Erin Magee is frequently spotted in a pair of Doc’s boots, with an undefinable attitude that makes her at home in the world of both brands. This mood is personified in MadeMe and Dr. Martens’ first collaboration, featuring London- based singer-songwriter Lola Young, whose raw charm and punchy, versatile voice embody the take-it-or- leave-it mindset of the quintessential MadeMe girl.

The two-piece collection features a chunky 1461 3-eye shoe built on our formidable Quad sole, marked with our distinctive grooving pattern and signature yellow welt stitching. It’s available in black Vintage Smooth leather paired with black laces or silver Alumix with contrasting purple laces. Both colours are fitted with a steel toe cap with an eye-catching heart-shaped cut-out — for an industrial edge with a softer twist. Dual branding stamps its mark on the heel and insock.

“I’ve always wanted to work on a steel toe DM’s shoe. The heart cut-out leather exposing the steel toe is as tough and utilitarian as it is soft. It’s a beautiful contradiction, just like the MadeMe girl.” — Erin Magee, MadeMe Founder

Since launching the women’s streetwear label MadeMe in 2007, Magee has transformed it into a ubiquitous New York brand and an inclusive community that occupies a still-revolutionary space in the male-dominated streetwear industry. Magee’s “for girls, by girls” ethos continues to champion women against the backdrop of a scene where they are historically underrepresented. Dr. Martens, whose boots and shoes have been at the feet of a long line of riot grrrl disruption, makes a natural partner for MadeMe as it continues its tradition of rebellion.

“I’ve known Erin for a long time, so it was great to finally bring this collaboration to life. In a lot of ways our collaboration was inevitable. MadeMe occupies that same rebellious space in women’s fashion that DM’s boots always have. It was great to put a spin on that heritage for a new generation.” — Darren Mckoy, Dr. Martens Global Creative Director

Dr. Martens x MadeMe is available from Friday 24th May at drmartens.com.au

ABOUT DR. MARTENS

The first pair of Dr. Martens boots rolled off the production line on the 1st April 1960. With its trademark yellow stitch, grooved sole and heel-loop, it was a boot for workers, initially worn by postmen and policemen; comfortable, durable and lightweight in comparison to its competitors at the time. Throughout Dr. Martens history, the brand has been adopted and subverted by diverse individuals, musicians, youth cultures and tribes. These are the people who stand out from the crowd and their journey of self-expression has always been accompanied by a pair of DM’s boots or shoes.

The simple silhouette allows people to customise each pair; whilst on a utilitarian level their famous durability and comfort make them ideal footwear for the world of gigs and street fashion. On an emotional level, they are a flag of attitude and empowerment.

The Northamptonshire factory where it all began still exists to this day, in the village of Wollaston. A specific range of ‘Made In England’ products are manufactured here by a small, close-knit team of people schooled in traditional shoe-making and a process that hasn’t changed since our first pair six decades ago.

ABOUT MADEME

MadeMe is a peerless “by girls, for girls” brand originating in New York City in 2007. Since its inception, the label has evolved to represent the dynamic perspectives of today’s downtown youth. In the early 90s, a powerful female-first ethos shaped music, clothing and culture. MadeMe embodies this energy for a new generation. With each collection the brand celebrates countercultural style tribes and the pioneering women who led them. Whether taking cues from riot grrls or ravers, MadeMe communicates through ideas and interests.

It is an ecosystem of kindred individuals who are at their core – themselves. This display of selfhood can be read as defiance or transgression against a minefield of relevance and moodboards. The MadeMe girl is radical because she rebels against the concept of who society says she should be, she does what she wants and is able to trust her own intuition. That feeling is always captured and embodied by both the girls and the clothes they wear.

FODI: FESTIVAL OF DANGEROUS IDEAS

by the partae May 20, 2024
written by the partae

Festival of Dangerous Ideas (FODI) has today unveiled its 2024 theme, Sanctuary, with a program for curious minds on 24-25 August. The home-grown, globally renowned festival returns to Sydney for the first time since 2022, with its twelfth edition set to delight and disrupt Australian audiences across one weekend.

Australia’s original disruptive festival, known for being at the zeitgeist of ideas, FODI will bring thought-leaders and artists from across the globe to Carriageworks’ art precinct. Its line-up, set to be announced in June, will fuel critical thinking, challenge preconception, provide information and spark conversations.

Offering a haven for exploration and a harbour for the curious, FODI 2024’s Sanctuary invites audiences to engage with the ideas behind the headlines of the 24-hour news cycle. It provides a space to spend time with international experts and agenda-setting changemakers, to better understand what is driving change in the world and society for better or worse.

Danielle Harvey, Festival Director, FODI, said:

“FODI is about bringing great talent and great audiences together, creating a place for everyone to meet and exchange ideas – be that on our stages, in our greenrooms, at our functions or in the foyers. Our digital extension of the live event reaches out globally, sharing and provoking conversations around the dinner table and in the media.”

“We know that it’s wild out there. It’s a litany of entrenched ideas, 24-hour news cycles, shallow information and self-censorship. We desperately need a space where we can engage with challenging ideas in good faith. And that’s what FODI is all about this year. It’s an opportunity to hear powerful and provocative speakers from around the world talk on important and rousing topics. And also a space, a sanctuary, where audiences can engage with these ideas in a way that we, unfortunately, can’t in the wild. In our Sanctuary you are safe from hype and safe to listen and to ask questions.”

FODI is an ideas festival for our times: inviting guests to indulge their curiosity, focus their attention and engage with the uncomfortable. The festival has featured over 630 of the most fascinating, fearless speakers and artists the world has to offer. Past speakers include Stephen Fry, Lionel Shriver, Christopher Hitchens, Alicia Garza, Salman Rushdie, Pussy Riot, Marcia Langton, Julian Assange and Germaine Greer.

The Festival is presented by The Ethics Centre, a not for profit that encourages people to examine all aspects of life, and is supported by the NSW Government through its tourism and major events agency, Destination NSW.

LEAPS AND BOUNDS MUSIC FESTIVAL RETURNS

written by the partae

LEAPS AND BOUNDS MUSIC FESTIVAL IS REIGNITING YARRA’S LOCAL LIVE MUSIC SCENE ONCE AGAIN THIS WINTER!

.

LEAPS AND BOUNDS
RETURNS 25 – 28 JULY

Yarra City Council’s annual winter music festival, Leaps and Bounds, returns with a focus on uplifting and amplifying Yarra’s diverse live music scene. Including the reopening of a historical venue that has been dormant for decades, this year’s festival strives to highlight the diversity of bands, performers and song writers that attracts an equally diverse audience of music lovers across all ages.

“Much loved for over a decade, Leaps and Bounds is a favourite in the Yarra calendar” Mayor Edward Crossland said.

“We’re so proud to continue hosting this spectacular festival and supporting local musicians, venues and workers, particularly in light of recent challenges that the industry is facing relating to rising rents, cost of living pressures and increasing public liability insurance.”

A celebration of local music, the diverse line-up of live shows will hit venues across Fitzroy, Fitzroy North, Collingwood, Abbotsford and Richmond from Thursday 25 July to Sunday 28 July.

Spanning four days and nights, the festival boasts a succession of parties and performances for all age groups and every budget, including plenty of free and family-friendly gigs on the program.

This year’s program provides a platform for venues to program a diverse lineup from LGBTIQA+ and First Nations musicians and to build audiences across generations.

Highlights include:

  • Tribute shows to Mazzy Star at Lulie Tavern, Gillian Welch at The Gem and John Prine at Catfish Bar.
  • Amos Roach Unplugged featuring the award-winning musician, dancer and director, for an intimate performance at the Railway Hotel Fitzroy.  An unmissable opportunity to also see the newly refurbished bandroom, which hosted dances for returned soldiers in the 50s through to local rock acts like Weddings Parties Anything in the early 2000s, but has sat dormant for decades, until now!
  • Other First Nations shows include Tjum Tjumba Fundraiser at Glamorama and Kiwat Kennell at Bodriggy Brewing Co.
  • Berada by Nighthawks x Rama Parwata promises to deliver an unforgettable experience as a showcase of Southeast Asian artists that merges cultural influences, experimental sounds and dynamic performances including Hantu, the solo project of multi-instrumentalist and ethnomusicologist Isobel D’Cruz which draws on her Western and Indian classical training and Malaysian background,
  • Shows for young families and teenagers including: Baby, you’re a star at Lulie Tavern: a gig for parents, pals and kids in conjunction with Yarra Youth DJ Skills plus Horsepower Two Year Anniversary Show (All Ages) at The Tote featuring Horsepower and a host of acts from Melbourne and Sydney with J.O.Y (SYD), Bozo (SYD), Mindrace and Tarnished.
  • PBS Presents ‘Swinging City’ Live from The Corner Hotel: To celebrate and launch Leaps and Bounds 2024, PBS will continue their tradition of a live broadcast from one of Yarra’s finest establishments the Corner Hotel, presenting not one, but two PBS radio shows live-to-air from the rooftop bar and courtyard. Join hosts Crispi Winsor and Myles O’Neil-Shaw for 4 hours of live music, special guests and rare records as Radio City and Swinging Doors combine for this special broadcast.
Successful events from last year will also return for another exciting instalment in 2024:
  • GRRLS to the Front at Bad Decisions Bar – a hip hop show spotlighting female identifying, non-binary, and LGBTIQA+ rap and hip-hop artists, and their passionate fan bases.
  • FLIGHT! – a showcase featuring the new generation of Naarm’s best artists, featuring 9 acts from culturally diverse backgrounds. Presented by The Boite & The Evelyn Hotel.
  • Leaps and Bounds Record Fair at Collingwood Town Hall.

As part of the festival, Council is also proud to announce a partnership with Live Music Locator (LML), a pilot project to promote all the live music taking place in the municipality from July onwards, including Leaps and Bounds Festival. Live Music Locator is a new website making it possible to discover every gig playing at every venue across every genre at any one time.

This information will always be verified and free, importantly supporting musicians, our small to medium live music venues and you, the punters. Head to www.lml.live to Find Your Music.

Leaps and Bounds Music Festival is proudly presented by Yarra City Council, with presenting partner PBS FM.

Le Youth has just announced his highly anticipated return to Australia for his first headline tour in close to a decade. Presented by Untitled Group, the exclusive two show tour will  take place in Eora/Sydney & Naarm/Melbourne across the 13th & 14th of September.

The LA based DJ & producer’s resurgence in Australia follows his successful East Coast tour last year with Lane 8’s ‘This Never Happened’ gathering which took place alongside Sultan + Shepard & PARIS. This tour was widely recognised for its unique photo & phone free environments.

Proving he is undoubtedly one of the most prominent profiles in melodic/progressive house, the impressive artist has sold out North American tours including major headline shows at La Fonda in LA & Brooklyn & Steel in NYC. His festival appearances at marquee events like EDC, CRSSD, Electric Forest, and Hangout have further cemented his reputation as a must-see artist. Alongside his numerous live performance accolades the DJ & producer has collaborated with fellow major players in the melodic house scene such as Sultan + Shepperd, Jerro, Ocula & many more.

Known for breaking barriers between performer & audiences, Le Youth states “it’s not about me, it’s about us.”

Dubbed ‘the peoples DJ’ by his loyal fanbase, Le Youth’s first album ‘Reminders’, released in 2022, amassed over 22.1 million streams since its debut. Following the success of ‘Reminders’ Le Youth followed up with his album ‘About Us’ in 2023, which recently saw the release of its deluxe version earlier this year.

The tour kicks off in Eora/Sydney on Friday, September 13, at the iconic Oxford Art Factory, a venue renowned for showcasing a vast array of talent including the likes of Khruangbin & Billie Eilish. The second & final stop will be in Naarm/Melbourne at Max Watts on Saturday September 14, the intimate venue sets the perfect scene for Le Youth’s barrier breaking ethos.

Prepare to be connected to this artist on a whole new level with these two headline shows set to live up to every standard ever set.

Spiderbait Australian Black Betty Tour for August – October

Spiderbait Australian Black Betty Tour for August – October

by the partae May 15, 2024
written by the partae

Limited edition Tonight Alright vinyl released July 26

Frontier Touring are delighted to announce iconic Aussie rockers Spiderbait will hit the road this August, September and October for an extensive run of shows to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of their seminal 2004 album, Tonight Alright and standout track, ‘Black Betty’.

Taking in ten dates across the country, the Black Betty 20th Anniversary Tour kicks off at Brisbane’s Fortitude Music Hall on Tuesday 13 August, heading through all Australian Capital Cities plus stops in Newcastle, Wollongong and the Gold Coast this August, September and October.

Frontier members can access presale tickets from 10am (local time) on Monday 20 May, before tickets go on sale at 10am (local time) on Wednesday 22 May.

For tickets and further information, head to frontiertouring.com/spiderbait.

“I can’t believe it’s 20 years since we released Black Betty and it went to number 1”, said Kram. “Since then, the song has become a bit legendary for us and has racked up over a hundred million streams on Spotify and 75 million views on YouTube which is nuts. The whole ride has been so awesome and was so unexpected.

“So to mark this mad anniversary of our biggest hit we are announcing a very special tour to celebrate Black Betty and its 20th anniversary. We’re super pumped and can’t wait to see y’all out there. Come celebrate Black Betty with us!”.

“Nothing beats seeing live music, I’m really excited to bring everyone along with us and leave them with a big smile. Feels like we’re throwing a party in the machinery shed on the farm like the old days”, added Janet.

“I loved touring this album 20 years ago, we went back to a raw guitar, bass and drums. That approach comes naturally to us”, said Whitt.

Recorded in California, Tonight Alright (2004) leant into the hard rock sound of the early-2000’s. The album debuted at No.14 on the ARIA Album Chart that year and featured the band’s most popular song to date, ‘Black Betty’. Defying age and genre, ‘Black Betty’ arrived fifteen years into Spiderbait’s storied career. The song continued to climb the charts after release, reaching the top of the ARIA Singles Chart two months after its debut and hitting the US Top 40 Rock Chart.

To celebrate Tonight Alright, Spiderbait will issue the album on vinyl for the first time. The 20th Anniversary edition – released on 26 July– arrives on limited edition red vinyl, with alternative artwork, imagery and an alternate version of the single, ‘Tonite’. Preorder the vinyl HERE.

Renowned for their dynamic on-stage energy, Spiderbait are without doubt one of the country’s most beloved live acts. Most recently touring Australia in 2022, the trio shows no sign of slowing down, their intensity and camaraderie endearing them to fans right across the globe.

“A celebration of friendship and great song-writing” – Beat

“Spiderbait made a mighty lush sound… They played with an energising, steamrolling pace that never let up” – MusicFeeds

“… a roaring set, high energy, pub/alt-rock, shouting and groovy, Kram, Janet English and Whitt clearly loving every moment” – The Music

The story of Spiderbait is an unlikely but heart-warming one – three friends from a small Australian country town taking on the music scene, and emerging triumphantly thirty years later, friendship intact, and now one of the biggest and best rock bands on the national landscape.

The trio’s popularity spans three decades and shows no signs of abating. They’ve released seven acclaimed albums, all of which have racked up Gold, Platinum or Double Platinum status, and have combined Australian sales of over a million units. Spiderbait have also chalked up almost every Australian accolade possible, taking home multiple ARIA Awards, topping charts and becoming the first Australian band to take the crown in triple j’s prestigious Hottest 100 of 1996 with ‘Buy Me A Pony’.

Australian rock ‘n roll royalty, and with a catalogue of music that’s distinctive and uncompromising, Spiderbait’s anticipated Black Betty 20th Anniversary Tour will see the band playing their greatest hits and celebrating their greatest hit of all. Don’t miss their epic tour this August, September and October!
