GREG GOULD RELEASES POWERFUL SEXUAL ABUSE ANTHEM WHO GAVE YOU PERMISSION?

Primal, moody and inescapably moving, the powerful new single Who Gave You Permission? out today from Australian powerhouse Greg Gould is a potent blend of pop, soul and searing intimacy. With an accompanying music video slated to land next week, and also set to captivate crowds with his latest release live in action throughout 2024, including onstage at SYNTHONY, Australia’s biggest orchestrated dance party this June, Gould also vigorously tackles exceedingly difficult narrative terrain via Who Gave You Permission? with unwavering finesse and poise.

Opening with a melancholic piano line, Who Gave You Permission? swells alongside Gould’s cogent vocals, ultimately building into a formidable primal pop anthem. Equally gripping musically as it is lyrically, Who Gave You Permission? weaves nods to the likes of Benson Boone, Rag’n’Bone Man, Teddy Swims and Sam Smith while also profoundly detailing an exceedingly personal experience for Gould himself. “To be honest I’m only just starting to feel comfortable to talk about this,” shares Gould. “The first time I performed the song live I burst into tears. I have been a victim of sexual abuse on four separate occasions in all very different circumstances from when I was 10 years old, right up until I was 30. Each time left me feeling so violated, so powerless, paralysed. Nobody has the right to touch you without permission. No means no. It was a very emotional, heart wrenching and confronting experience to write this song to be honest as I’d pushed a lot of those feelings and experiences down and hadn’t dealt with them – it took a while for me to be ok to admit it. There is a stigma around sexual abuse in general, and I do think it can be really difficult for men who are the victim – whether it be at the hands of another man or a woman. In my case, it was both on separate occasions. I want other men to feel comfortable to talk about this and speak up too.”

Seeking to empower fellow survivors through Who Gave You Permission?, Gould co-wrote the compelling new single with Benedict, working alongside Gould to unpack his trauma and ultimately pen a connective and sonically robust ode to survival, along with production by Sydney duo Cressbrook, with live strings composed by Ryan Youens. With a striking music video set to accompany this deeply powerful song on April 20, filmed in Gould’s home state, the clip for Who Gave You Permission? flourishes with its sonic elegance alongside poignant visuals to further amplify the driving message at the track’s core. “The music video features a protagonist moving through an old house,” shares Gould.” As they enter each room, a different storyline unfolds, each scenario reveals as we move back and forth between the rooms. I wanted to highlight that sexual abuse can happen in many forms and in many ways…without over-dramatising or sensationalising it.”

A creative cauldron from way back, Greg Gould began singing the moment he could talk; a talent which ultimately followed him to securing the runner up slot at the grand finale of Australia’s Got Talent in 2013. Following his Australia’s Got Talent success, Gould has gone on to generate millions of streams as well as views of his award-winning videos, perform multiple sold out shows and festivals, tour the globe and ignite charts at home and abroad; and all while continuing to foster and grow an authentic connection with his fans through his heartfelt creations. From snagging the #1 spot on the iTunes Albums charts via his 2020 album 1998, through to collaborating with En Vogue’s Maxine Jones (“a real pinch me moment”, Gould shares), Gould’s proudest moment to date remains releasing his first-ever self-directed music video, a cover of En Vogue’s 1996 smash single Don’t Let Go (Love) with the song’s heart wrenching video having amassed an impressive 20 million+ views. Fast-forward to 2024, and Gould has embraced the mixture of excitement, anxiety, nerves and relief to unveil the vulnerable yet hopeful Who Gave You Permission?, with the latest track also offering a hint as to what’s to come from Gould’s debut album of original songs, Strings Attached, set for release July 12, including his duet with one of the Philippines’ most successful artists, Morissette called Love It All Out (co-written by Bachelor Girl’s Tania Doko) which recently hit over 1 million views on TikTok. Gould has also written and performed the main song for the credits of a new Australian feature film getting its theatrical release later this year, which is set to debut at the Berlin International Film Festival.

Set to perform Who Gave You Permission? at an array of events this April and June, fans can expect to hear Gould’s latest track live in action alongside many other original songs. As to what fans can expect in the not too distant future? “Whether the subject matter is darker or lighter, guests at my shows can expect big vocals, big moments and lot of fun,” Gould enthuses. “I love to perform and I’m excited for the next 12 months! I’ve got big plans and even bigger dreams. I am so proud that Who Gave You Permission? is out now and I’m moving forward both personally and professionally! I would love if even one survivor of abuse feels stronger as a result of hearing this song. I want people to know they are seen, they are heard and they are believed. We won’t be broken.”

Who Gave You Permission? is out now.

Strings Attached is out July 12.

Naomi Kavka ‘Landline’ Premiere

written by the partae

Naomi Kavka is a songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from Smithers, BC. A classically trained cellist, vocalist, and guitar player, Kavka brings a myriad of influences to her songs, forming a daring indie-rock sound that is musically polished, lyrically visceral, and emotionally raw. Her songs come from the unique perspective of a queer woman, a child of a refugee, a resident of the precipice of the wilderness of Canada.

Kavka’s band, Geoff McFarlane (Handsome Eli) Ian Olmstead (Alex Cuba), Jake Jenne (Aerialists), and Jordy Walker, deftly support her as they perform deeply intimate, political, and cathartic songs. Brought together by soundscapes and comradery, they blend their backgrounds of jazz, classical music, folk traditions, and rock to communicate complex emotional landscapes. Their latest album “Then and Now” (June 2024) is a collection of 8 songs produced by Jordy Walker. Ranging from driving indie jams, melancholic ballads, snarky anthems, and art rock improvisations, “Then and Now” demonstrates Kavka’s fearlessness and range as a performer and songwriter.

From her upcoming album “Wandering The Pine” (set for release on May 31), “Longer” pieces together a period of her life where she pined for love, and in turn found love of all kinds. Her ethereal lyricism weaves rich stories of longing buoyed by moments of quiet tenderness; and pays homage to the wild places.  Her musical partner, Matt Stanyer recorded the tunes in her cabin in the wilds of Northern BC, and the finishing touches were done with Jane Aurora on Bowen Island and downtown Vancouver.

Her sound is reflective of artists like Bonnie Payne and Feist – and her influences include Gillian Welch, William Prince, and Frazey Ford. She released her first album, Be the Change in 2010, and she has toured extensively, with highlights including Peace Valley Folk Fest, Edge of the World (Haida Gwaii), and 2 Rivers Remix–a Feast of Indigenous Culture.

Australian guitar virtuoso and beloved songwriter Harts returns today with his first delivery of new music under the name in 2024, with ‘Summer In June’.

Having shifted focus in recent years to the separate creative project of The Melodaze, musician Darren Hart is making a huge comeback to the legendary name of Harts, and has unsurprisingly produced pure magic with ‘Summer In June’. The track follows on from the several successful releases under the previously mentioned title of The Melodaze in 2023 – including Over & Again and Castles From The Moon – befitting Harts’ unique playing style and performance charisma.

Created in his home studio, ‘Summer In June’ was not only written by Harts, but produced, mixed and mastered by the musician as well. A powerful hit of electro-funk, ‘Summer In June’ is nostalgia inducing in the best way possible, Harts reflects on the process behind the single:

“‘Summer In June’ is both a trip down memory lane, and the start of a new journey. Revisiting the style of electro-funk music that I loved so much growing up, the style that I incorporated so much of into my sound in the early days. I wanted to revisit those fun, energetic guitar-based grooves once more and use it as a pillar to establish more of what’s to come in the near future.”  HARTS

Put simply, ‘Summer In June’ is a track to put on when you’re looking ahead to brighter days – having fun and enjoying life in all its facets.

Harts’ musical journey is one that has seen him earn acclaim the world over. With three studio albums, two EPs and countless powerful live shows to his name, to see Harts perform makes the punter feel no surprise to learn the grand level of praise to which he’s been subject so far. As a live performer, Harts has dominated stages at festivals including Splendour in the Grass, Bluesfest, WOMADelaide, Falls Festival, and Groovin The Moo. He has accrued over 16K monthly streams on Spotify and over 8 million all-time streams across his catalogue to date. His previous single ‘Peculiar’ also has over 1.3 million streams to itself on Spotify.

His talent internationally renowned, Harts has collaborated with the likes of Lenny Kravitz & The Roots, Joey Bada$$, and Denzel Curry, while developing a signature sound that has never deviated from being refreshingly honest and raw to his impeccable playing and compositional style.

Alongside the release of this single, Harts has announced the upcoming release of a new album– his first to be released under the legendary mononym in six years. With a fresh perspective as he charts forward into a new era for the project, as well as a world of talent and passion on his side, Harts is back, and better than ever before.

What’s All The Buzz Behind Ozempic?

by the partae April 10, 2024

A post shared by Obi Obadike (@obiobadike)

If you’ve been keeping tabs on the weight loss world, you’ve likely heard about a drug called Ozempic. The name has been making the rounds in recent years, with everyone from health experts to Hollywood stars buzzing about it. It’s because this blockbuster drug has paved the way for effective weight loss, making it highly sought after by people looking to manage their weight. While it’s only recently gained attention for its effects on weight, this weight loss medication has been around for years, initially developed for diabetes patients to help manage blood sugar. However, it was found that its effects also worked well for shedding pounds.

Ozempic and other weight loss medications have disrupted the weight loss scene, and more advancements are coming. Here’s what you need to know about Ozempic, medical weight loss, and why these have become so popular:

What is Ozempic?

Ozempic is a brand name for a prescription drug called semaglutide. It is a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist, which is a type of medication that helps regulate blood sugar levels. Ozempic is approved by the FDA for the treatment of type 2 diabetes in adults, but Wegovy—another semaglutide drug—is also approved for weight loss and obesity treatment. There are specific qualifications to receive a prescription for these drugs or go through medical weight loss. A patient must have a BMI of 30 or higher or a BMI of 27 or higher with at least one weight-related medical condition.

How do GLP-1 drugs work?

Aside from semaglutide, other weight loss drugs like liraglutide and tirzepatide can aid in weight loss. When these are injected into the body, these GLP-1 agonists activate the receptors in the body that respond to GLP-1, mimicking the hormone. This allows your body to regulate insulin and control blood sugar. However, it also makes you feel full, helping curb appetite and slow stomach emptying. By suppressing your appetite, you can prevent consuming excess calories, experience fewer thoughts and cravings for food, and feel fuller between meals. This effect has helped people lose an average of 15% of their body weight.

Why are weight loss medications and medical weight loss popular?

GLP-1 medications have skyrocketed in popularity, with doctors having written nine million prescriptions for them in the last three months of 2022 alone. Aside from their effectiveness, drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy have helped change perspectives on obesity. More people are becoming aware of obesity as a chronic disease that can’t always be solved by willpower, diet, and exercise alone. As such, using GLP-1 for weight loss has emerged in popularity alongside medical weight loss because these drugs help level the playing field and address biological factors of weight. You also get the benefit of receiving tailored guidance. You can be prescribed Wegovy (semaglutide), Zepbound (tirzepatide), or Saxenda (liraglutide) based on your specific needs and lifestyle.

However, the drugs alone won’t be effective; pairing them with a balanced diet, regular exercise, adequate sleep, stress management, and more is crucial for maintaining weight loss even after stopping their use. As such, qualified individuals often seek medical weight loss to receive a program that’s created with the help of a professional, allowing them to find the right plan and medication to address chronic obesity.

How are weight loss drugs changing the game?

Ozempic and other similar drugs are in the midst of a cultural shift, reshaping how obesity is perceived and treated. Rather than obesity being a result of poor lifestyle choices, it demonstrates how weight loss isn’t a level playing field for many, and it’s a chronic disease that requires appropriate treatment. It’s also helped shed light on the importance of maintaining healthy habits for sustainable weight loss, even without the help of medication. Rather than facilitating weight loss through restriction and quick fixes, you shouldn’t deprive yourself of your favorite foods or go through tortuous workouts to lose weight. Staying consistent and diligent is crucial, as is finding joy in the process. You can still throw and enjoy that BBQ party without worrying about weight!

The demand for these weight loss drugs may only continue to grow, but so will the conversations on obesity and weight loss. Ozempic may only be the tip of the iceberg for changes in the weight loss and health industries and shifting how obesity treatment is approached from a medical and cultural perspective.

Celebrating 25 Years as a Champion of the Global Underground

@circolocoibiza

Today, global event institution CircoLoco reveals the full programme for its twenty-fifth anniversary Ibiza season, taking place April 29 – October 14 at DC-10.

For twenty-five years, CircoLoco has melded scenes and sounds from across the globe with its flagship Ibiza season lineups. It’s a place where legends are born, the avantgarde takes centre stage, and the moment’s biggest stars are given the chance to experiment on one of the world’s most revered stages.

CircoLoco has been long intertwined with acts now regarded as the ultimate titans of the underground electronic landscape. The 25th season will pay homage to this legacy with marquee billings featuring Apollonia, Seth Troxler, The Martinez Brothers, Tania Vulcano, Peggy Gou, Rampa, Loco Dice, DJ Tennis, Sonja Moonear, Tale of Us, Anyma, ANOTR, Butch and Luciano.

The season’s lineup shifts left of centre with rare Ibiza showings from the likes of experimental electronic’s foremost flag bearers including Ben UFO, Daniel Avery, Joy Orbison, Aurora Halal, Bambounou, Bradley Zero, I. Jordan, Eliza Rose and VTSS positioned alongside formidable pioneers of the genre like Moodymann and Carl Craig, and crossover icons like Grimes and The XX’s Romy.

House music’s perennial evolution will be showcased by its new school icons like The Ghost, Sweely, Christian AB, Gene on Earth and Quest, as well as 4/4 heroes like Young Marco, Antal, Hunee and more.

It remains CircoLoco’s tight knit family of artists who know the club and its capacity to foster moments of connection like nowhere else that continue to earn the attention of the island each season. Chloé Caillet continues her rise within and beyond the four walls of DC-10 in 2024 on the back of her CircoLoco Records debut and launch of her own Smile label earlier this year. Keinemusik’s Rampa remains a fixture of the CircoLoco movement, effortlessly crisscrossing sonic styles and representing the fashion-forward lens of the community. Mochakk continues his monumental superstardom this season, much of which can be traced back to peak moments on the CircoLoco dance floor with a crazed smile on his face and impeccable energy in the booth.

Circoloco remains one of underground electronic music’s most important outfits. From its namesake party in Ibiza, spawned in 1999 as a Monday after-hours party, CircoLoco has grown into a global music brand and veritable lifestyle, catalysing cultural exchange with the most brilliant minds across art, fashion and entertainment. Its no-frills approach and forward-thinking lineups have perpetuated the underground spirit of its Balearic roots for 25 years.

CircoLoco’s impact on culture far exceeds its four walls, with the world’s of fashion and celebrity colliding with dance culture. It’s where Ricardo Tisci first heard the Martinez Brothers before booking them to soundtrack Givenchy shows for years; Virgil Abloh was inspired to design a capsule collection for the brand; a place where household names and high society stars can lose themselves on its dance floor. CircoLoco’s dance floor has sparked collaborations with world renowned brands such as Off-White, Adidas, and most notably a partnership with Rockstar Games, which led to the founding of CircoLoco Records, serving as a far-reaching fusion between the virtual and physical worlds of music and entertainment.

From its humble beginnings in the late-90s as a free Monday morning party at the infamous Ibiza venue DC-10, founder Antonio Carbonaro has overseen the exponential rise and expansion of CircoLoco into recording and design, and ultimately one of the most influential and iconic brands in club culture.

With shows spanning decades taking place in New York, Miami, London, Milan, Paris, Amsterdam, Mexico City, Madrid and Phuket to name a few, revellers on the White Isle this summer can expect CircoLoco’s customary blend of unity, inclusivity, cutting edge sound, and exceptional curation.

written by the partae

MOGA Caparica

May 29 – June 2, 2024

Costa da Caparica, Portugal

https://www.mogafestival.com/

FB / IG / TW: @mogafestival

An all new and elevated MOGA Caparica experience awaits on the beautiful coast of Portugal from May 29th to June 2nd, 2024 and now the second wave of names has been revealed as well as headliners for the OFF events.

Now playing are the likes of Acid Arab (DJ set), Adassiya (live), Agoria, Francis Mercier, Mâhoud (live), Lee Burridge, Romain FX (live), Rui Vargas, To Ricciardi, Zengxrl and many more. These latest names come on top of first wave names such as Acid Pauli, Dekmantel Soundsystem, Dixon, Jan Blomqvist (Live), Luca Saporito (Audiofly), Mr. ID, Pachanga Boys, Satori, Xinobi, Desiree and more and tickets are available now at mogafestival.com.

MOGA Caparica has made a huge impression in a short space of time. This year MOGA transitions from a series of beach parties to a full-fledged beach festival with a single expansive site and three stages but it remains a compact and boutique gathering for real music lovers inspired by Atlantic vibes and aimed at connecting people from all over the world.

In 2024, it offers another magical mix of artistic discovery, delicious food, local and international music talent, enriching activities for the soul and beach parties, boat parties. The latest names cover house, techno, melodic electronic music, funk, soul and plenty in between with a mix of live acts and DJ sets from legends, pioneers and new school talents.

There is also a superb OFF program across one boat, three beach venues, six parties, and countless hours of non-stop dancing. That OFF program can now be revealed and will take place across Lorosae, Azul Dr Bernard and Buya Beach in Costa da Caparica on the first two days of the festival.

The stunning beach bar Lorosae will be hosting a party on both Wednesday and Thursday. For this occasion the organisers partner up with Amor Records, a local record store and talent incubators. The event offers attendees an immersive experience in the electronic music Lisbon scene, showcasing local names. Later on the same days (29 and 30), the celebration carries on at Azul Dr. Bernard, just a few minutes away from the afternoon event. The setting will host electronic scene headliners along with their talented DJ friends. On Wednesday, MOGA gladly welcome Polocorp, and on Thursday, DJ Vibe, Portuguese talent known locally and globally, both spinning beats for a party lasting long into the night. MOGA will once again host its traditional boat cruise on the Tejo river, setting sail to the tunes of DJs from the Faina Music Portuguese label.

In addition to the live electronic music and parties, the festival also aims to pay homage to the land that welcomes us. The programme will be announced in the coming weeks but in previous editions, MOGA invited a local batucada, offered free yoga and surfing lessons, hosted discussions on music and technology, and organized exhibitions, all against the scenic backdrop of Caparica.

Navigating Shadows and Light: Chiara Dubey’s Journey Through ‘CHANDANI’ – Exploring the Interplay of Empowerment and Self-Reflection in Music

by the partae April 10, 2024
written by the partae
Your singles “How To Save Myself” and “30” offer listeners a glimpse into your upcoming album “CHANDANI.” How do these singles reflect the overall theme and mood of the album?

The first ideas for the album started to blossom about a year ago. There was something different about that moment. I felt at ease, just fine, and I’ve never felt “just fine” for such a long period of time, there was always some trouble, some darkness in the background of my head.
That sudden inner-calm felt new and beautiful; I wanted to hold on to it, write abut it, so it ended up becoming the seed from which CHANDANI started to grow.
To me the album is a personal celebrating this fortunate chapter, and at the same time a way to look my shadows in the eye, before letting them go. Like a ritual.
The first single “How To Save Myself” is one of these shadows: the lack of self love, and the inability to put myself first, set boundaries, and the second single “30” (because I turned 30 this year!)  is really about this liberating change I’ve been noticing, in the way I feel in my own skin.
“How To Save Myself” explores themes of self-worth and love, while “30” delves into self-assurance and empowerment. How do these complementary themes intertwine throughout “CHANDANI”?
I feel that the album is like a passage, or a portal, with an old version of me on ne side and a new one on the other side. As if I was standing right in the doorway. So it’s a place with a mixed back and forth of both empowerment and self-awareness feelings and darker feelings, memories, like the ones of “How To Save Myself”.

Each of your singles seems to carry a deeply personal narrative. Could you share how your own experiences and emotions shape the storytelling on “CHANDANI”?

In general, I think writing music and sharing it with others is a wayfor me to elaborate, and process all that I experience. I guess we all have our ownl way to do that. So yes, all of my writing, including CHANDANI, is the rephrasing of a personal story.
“How To Save Myself” for example, was a way for me to let go of a recent toxic, romantic relationship I was involved in, one where I got hurt. There is always a story behind every track.

Collaboration has played a significant role in your album’s creation, with contributions from notable names like Chris Tabron and Robot Koch. How did these collaborations influence the sonic landscape of “CHANDANI,” especially in comparison to your previous work?

They literarily showed me new worlds of possibilities. I feel like Chris Tabron’s mixing made my music braver, proud of all the emotions I packed it with. He was a precious addition to the project, and I hope it won’t be our last collaboration. The same goes for Robot Koch: I have been a big admirer of his work for a long time, and I still can’t believe he has agreed on making music with me. His additional touch gave our track a new depth, a beautiful new atmosphere I would have never created alone. Many other inspiring artists and musicians contributed to this album, and I am very grateful to all of them!
As a multifaceted artist, you blend modern classical elements with electro/art-pop. How does this fusion of genres manifest across both your singles and the wider scope of “CHANDANI”?

I come from a classical music background, but my heart also beats for electro and pop music, so I decided not to give up on any of these contrasting sides of me, and instead try to make them coexist in my own little universe. I am probably making things more difficult for me – certailnly for my label team! – but so be it. It’s fun, and it’s authentic!
The album ranges from pure string orchestra pieces to edgy and experimental electro-pop songs. These are the extremes, and in the middle are several combinations of these two worlds (some tracks have more orchestral textures than others, and some are more vocals or electronic driven).

“How To Save Myself” and “30” showcase your versatility as a singer, composer, and producer. Can you shed light on your creative process for these singles and how it evolved during the making of “CHANDANI”?
Writing and arranging for strings and vocals is what comes easiest to me. I feel confident with it, even if one can go on learning to infinity. Music production is a newer skill for me instead: I am having lots of fun with it, and I am very hungry for knowledge. CHANDANI was a great music production playground. It gave me the chance to practice, experiment, and challenge myself. The difference between the first and the last demo I wrote is huge!
Especially for  “How To Save Myself” I was helped in the production by one of my best friends, Jakob Eisenbach, who worked with me on several album tracks. I owe him!

Your career has seen support from various media platforms and successful live performances. How do these experiences inform the storytelling and sonic exploration on “CHANDANI”?

I can’t say for certain, but as playing live is one of the most rewarding, extatic feelings I’ve known so far, I guess all past live performances fed more and more my urge to make music, and encouraged my writing and my sharing. Like a (wonderful) drug. Without that drive, there would be no new album.

With the release of both singles, you’ve initiated a significant marketing campaign for “CHANDANI.” How does this campaign aim to capture the essence of the album and engage with your audience?

I wanted the album to like a little microcosm, with a message, an aesthetic, and a visual identity. The marketing campaign is aligned with it and guides the public along the release journey, which started in February with “How To Save Myself” and will end in September with the album, always revealing a little more about its world.
This project will also be my first step into the Meta-verse,  with the creation of a NFT collection and possibly concerts in the Meta-verse. For the visual part, I have to thank the artist behind the beautiful artworks, Adso Piñerúa, an incredibly talented Argentinian photographer, whose visual universe is very close to mine: a blue, dark, dreamy, surreal one.

“CHANDANI” is described as a celebration of a fortunate moment in your journey. How do you translate this sense of gratitude and introspection into the overall atmosphere of the album?

It’s hard to explain… Lyrics help, of course, but I don’t always use lyrics. I guess there just are some soundscapes and some harmonies, some patterns, sounds, textures that sound like “relief”, or “gratitude”, or “euphoria” to me. It’s the way they make me feel. So I try to find them and use them as a tool to translate this femotion and hopefully making someone else feel what I feel. This is the connection I love the most.

Through your music, you aim to convey messages of self-love, empowerment, and acceptance. How do you hope listeners will connect with these themes as they experience “CHANDANI” as a complete body of work?
Even if the album is inspired by my personal experience, I really think we are all more similar than we think, and after all, we all encounter the same monsters along the way. So I would like it to be a message of encouragement and express, in some way, that we are all on the same boat, and nobody is alone.

Can you share any behind-the-scenes anecdotes or memorable moments from the creation of “CHANDANI” and the recording process of both singles?

The months spent in the studio with my co-producer Jakob. It was so intense. We spent together so many hours, I felt like we could understand each other without speaking. We were friends before, but I think it brought us loser. One night (we were pretty tired, that kind of tired that makes you laugh about everything) we started to make up a fake language for “How To Save Myself”. So every time I hear the song I hear the fake words we made up (like “aiwishainü” – I wish I knew,  or “yüdusimee”– you to see me). It sounds ridiculous now, but at that point it was really funny!

Looking forward, what do you envision for the reception and impact of “CHANDANI” following the release of “How To Save Myself” and “30”? Are there any future projects or collaborations on the horizon that you’re particularly excited about?

I am very much looking forward to playing the album live. I am right now planning a little tour, starting from my home town to some European cities!

SUNBLEACHED SHARE THEIR GRUNGEY NEW SINGLE “HELL IS REPETITION” PLAYING ’10 YEARS OF THE BRIGHTSIDE’ W/ THE GETAWAY PLAN, OCEAN GROVE AND MORE IN JUNE

by the partae April 9, 2024
written by the partae

Brisbane alt-rock band Sunbleached share grungey new single Hell is Repetition, fresh off the back of their appearance at New Bloom Festival last month.

Produced and recorded with long time collaborator Dylan Cottee, Hell is Repetition is the heaviest and darkest song in the quartet’s repertoire to date. The track is an introspective look at behaviour everyone falls into from time to time, romanticising feeling depressed or remaining in a negative mindset instead of fixing the problem.

“The lyrical hook “How long will I stay here slow dancing with my demons” questions how long I’ll keep on repeating that process instead of trying to do better,” explains vocalist Josh Baker.

Late last month Sunbleached joined a handful of their biggest influences in Citizen, Movements, Touché Amoré and more to play New Bloom Festival in Brisbane, where they showcased their own brand of dreamy shoegaze and emo rock. Sunbleached were recently announced to celebrate 10 Years of The Brightside alongside The Getaway Plan, Ocean Grove, Eat Your Heart Out and more, kicking off on June 1. Tickets on sale now via Oztix.

Hell is Repetition follows on from Sunbleached’s February single No Cure For Life, which garnered radio support from multiple triple j programs, Eleven on Double J, Unearthed and community radio stations across the nation as well as editorial playlisting on Spotify and Apple Music. The single was the first to release for 2024 and is a nostalgic exploration of the band’s sound thus far, building on elements established on the quartet’s 2023 sophomore EP release, ‘Delicate Places We Hide’.

Sunbleached’s dedication and passion for their project has seen them welcomed to the Destroy All Lines agency roster and most recently pick up new management from 27 Music (Teenage Joans, Bec Stevens, The Tullamarines).

Sunbleached is Josh Baker (vocals), Bradley Maddaford (guitar), Zane Hughes (bass) and Brent Ottley (guitar). With all members winding down from previous music projects, sunbleached set out in 2020 to create a fresh and authentic alternative rock project ripping inspiration from decades past, reimagined for the present.

The quartet began their journey with the 2021 two-track release containing the light hearted title track Rose Tinted and the polar opposite offering, Flowers Grow From Ugly Places. Blunt Mag affirmed early on: “The future of post-hardcore is in good hands, so long as Brisbane trailblazers sunbleached are the ones holding it.“

The band played BIGSOUND 2022 on the Destroy All Lines showcase and have made an impression playing shows with Boston Manor (UK), Holding Absence (UK), Void of Vision, Deadlights, Mirrors, Pridelands, Dregg and Waxflower to name a few.
