Christina Kennedy ‘Echoes Of Us’ Premiere

by the partae May 2, 2024
written by the partae

Christina Kennedy’s inaugural EP, “Echoes of Us,” is out NOW! The narrative of the new music unfurls from the genesis of a relationship, diving deep into the intricate layers of love, anxious attachments, pain, and ultimately, liberation. Each composition serves as a testament to distinctive live instrumentation, ranging from captivating ukulele melodies to heartfelt piano serenades and dynamic guitar riffs. “Echoes of Us” constructs a vivid tapestry of nostalgia, weaving through past experiences and memories while embracing the journey of remembrance and release—a poignant portrayal of personal growth and maturation.

Drawing inspiration from a diverse spectrum of genres, including modern pop, R&B, folk-rock, classic doo-wop, and gospel, Kennedy is influenced by a myriad of artists such as Billie Eilish, Tate McRae, Noah Kahan, Olivia Rodrigo, Fleetwood Mac, Renee Rapp, Gracie Abrams, and Pink Floyd. Each track seamlessly melds elements from multiple genres and sonic landscapes. Kennedy endeavors to fashion ethereal, cinematic, and ambient sounds juxtaposed with intimate and unfiltered storytelling. Through her lyrical exploration of themes such as heartache, separation, yearning, and self-discovery, Kennedy creates an emotional resonance, leaving listeners feeling understood, empathetic, and perhaps even hopeful.

SPEED DELIVER ‘REAL LIFE LOVE’

by the partae May 2, 2024

RESPECT FOR SPEED

“SPEED does not exist for the sake of just being a band… they want to keep the hardcore scene that shaped them alive, and ensure the baton gets passed to the next generation”
Rolling Stone

“Unapologetically showcase the power of resilience and community”
FBi Radio

“SPEED has, in their brief time, managed to usher in a group of people to this world who may not have previously had any interest in hardcore whatsoever – rare”
Acclaim Magazine

“They’re not taking the spotlight lightly”
NME Magazine

“Their sound and approach is deeply rooted in a rich, and often overlooked subculture. The band’s enthusiasm is high, and their mission is clear – they want you along for the ride”
RUSSH Magazine

Today, Eora / Sydney hardcore band SPEED share ‘REAL LIFE LOVE’, the first single and opening track on their just-announced debut LP ONLY ONE MODE, out July 12 via Last Ride Records (AUS) and Flatspot Records (USA). WATCH VIDEO HERE + LISTEN TO ‘REAL LIFE LOVE’ HERE + PRE-ORDER THE LP HERE.

SPEED and hardcore are two words that have become synonymous on a global scale. The band have staked claim on the genre through exhilarating live performances, epic music videos, and staying true to themselves. ONLY ONE MODE, a phrase coined by the group, declares the title of their first full-length album, a debut which exemplifies the band’s growth while still delivering the SPEED ethos. This is what they’re about: Hardcore, played hard, played fast, “for us, by us”—explicit, immediate, definitive—hinting at all the crucial bands that have come before them.

‘REAL LIFE LOVE’, the new single out today, is about the loyalty and realness they’ve learnt from hardcore, how SPEED connected through showing up; a depth of expression and emotion set against very punishing music. Tough vocals, jolting grooves, pummelling breakdowns, ‘REAL LIFE LOVE’ has everything that makes up the SPEED sound. The music video, produced by SPEED with friends Jack Rudder and Thomas Elliot, celebrates the Sydney hardcore scene.

On ‘REAL LIFE LOVE’, vocalist Jem Siow states: “My time in hardcore has informed the relationships I have with everyone I hold close. An unconditional sense of love and loyalty. A bond that knows no words. Relationships that now span a lifetime. To us, this unique sense of deep-seated understanding is the essence of HC, it’s what we’re most passionate about and grateful for. Yet there are many in, and especially outside of this space who conflate this idea. If you stick around long enough, you might just get it. Otherwise, what’s the point to all of this?”

Formed in 2019, the members of SPEED – brothers Jem Siow (vocals) and Aaron Siow (bass), guitarists Josh Clayton and Dennis Vichidvongsa, and drummer Kane Vardon – never set out for popularity. The band has always done things on their own terms, working with the same collaborators since inception – producer Elliott Gallart and videographer Jack Rudder. When 2021 single ‘We See U’ was released, the song quickly rose to a million streams, unprecedented for a hardcore act from Sydney at the time. 2022’s Gang Called Speed EP became a definitive moment for the band.

Global praise poured in from press outlets like Rolling Stone Australia, NME, Kerrang, Revolver, The Fader, Stereogum, to name a few. SPEED found themselves touring across the world – North America, Europe, Southeast Asia, Australia – and documenting it all along the way. 2024 shows absolutely zero signs of slowing down. SPEED is currently at the start of a six week North American tour supporting Knocked Loose, Show Me The Body, and Loathe, the band is slated to open two of the Have Heart reunion shows, and have festival plays, including Download and Hellfest, in Europe in-between.

This is a hardcore band from Australia who surpassed what they thought they might do at the start, and has since doubled down, ONLY ONE MODE, as fast and as hard as possible. SPEED are doing what they do for the love of their friends, family and the culture of Australian hardcore. They’re under the global spotlight for now, bright enough that their whole scene’s right there with them.

The Southern River Band sign with Cooking Vinyl Australia

written by the partae

“Now this is a proper f***ing rock band”

Justin Hawkins – The Darkness

Exploding into view all over the world at the end of 2023 after being featured on every music lover’s favourite YouTube series ‘Justin Hawkins Rides Again’, the rest of the world is starting to see what Australia has known for quite some time – The Southern River Band are the real deal.

Hailing from Thornlie in Western Australia (Where? Exactly), SRB has spent years on the road and in the air, taking their full-throttle live show to anywhere with a stage and a bar, leaving thousands of fans grinning from ear to ear, night after night. From sold out national tours, playing with Aussie legends such as Cold Chisel & Rose Tattoo, through to supporting modern day rock icons like The Darkness and Eagles Of Death Metal, SRB never fail to raise their own bar.

With the release of their 6-minute epic Stan Qualen in September of last year, the band kicked into a whole ‘nother gear, charting in 23 countries worldwide and announced their first ever International Tour that sees them play 38 shows in Australia, The UK and Europe, gracing the stages of festivals such as The Great Escape, Vestrock, Sweden Rock Festival, Rock Werchter and Down The Rabbit Hole to name a few.   See UK/European dates below.

After freshly signing a deal with Cooking Vinyl Australia, the band – Cal Kramer, Dan Carroll, Pat Smith & Tyler ‘The Hawk’ Michie – are gearing up for by far their biggest year yet, with the release of their new single ‘Vice City III‘ (out today) and a record to follow later in the year.

Of the label signing, Cal says “We are absolutely fucking stoked to be joining the legends at CVA, good people doing good shit, ya can’t ask for nothin’ more. We can’t wait to conquer the world with them, one song at a time!”    A sentiment that is equally shared by CVA.

To put it in layman’s terms – The Southern River Band never fail to deliver.

But hey, don’t take our word for it, find out for yourself!   Find ‘Vice City III‘ streaming on all platforms HERE, and check out the accompanying video below.

Willaris. K & The Presets Join Forces On ‘World Collapsing’

CREATIVE COLLISION BETWEEN GENRE ICON
& NEXT-GEN TECHNO LEADER

In a bucket-list collaborative release, Naarm techno powerhouse Willaris. K has impressively joined forces with acclaimed Australian dance pioneer The Presets on electrifying new single ‘World Collapsing’ – a momentous creative collision between a genre icon and next-generation leader.

A long-time fan of The Presets, Willaris. K came of age during the outfit’s reign over the Australian music scene, finding inspiration in their innovative sound and groundbreaking approach to electronic music. With ‘World Collapsing’, Willaris. K pays homage to his musical influences, while charting new territories alongside the act that shaped him the most. Packed with mid-naughties nostalgia, the pair seamlessly blend The Presets’ iconic sound with Willaris. K’s signature combination of organic sound and gritty, industrial production. The exciting collaboration saw its first spin on triple j Drive last night.

“The Presets were the first electronic music that I fully immersed myself in. They’re one of the most formative bands of my life. I’d reached out saying I wanted to work with them, didn’t expect much back, but turns out Julian was down. ‘World Collapsing’ is my own take on Apocalypso – honoured to be able to share it with Julian, one of the most iconic voices in Australian music.”
– Jack McAllister, Willaris. K “Jack approached me years ago, I’d always really liked his stuff. I loved the ambient piano and industrial techno stuff he was making. The worlds Willaris. K inhabits reminds me of a lot of early Presets.”
– Julian Hamilton, The Presets

The Presets career has spanned 21 years and four records – winning 6x ARIAs for their triple-Platinum-awarded album, Apocolypso. First signed to Modular Records, The Presets have toured with Daft Punk and played Coachella (twice), Glastonbury, Creamfields and Exit Festival.

Willaris. K has made a name for himself on local and international shores, gaining the attention of BBC Radio 1, Mixmag, The Guardian, Beats 1, Stereogum and NME. He has gone on to score for HBO alongside scores for fashion brands, runway events and film, tour UK/EU with Skin On Skin, and play world-renowned festivals including Coachella, Lollapalooza and Beyond The Valley. He sold-out his hometown headline show at The Forum last year, marking his biggest headline gig to date. Willaris. K has officially remixed RÜFÜS DU SOL and Flume, and his own tracks have been remixed by Boys Noize and Skin On Skin.

‘World Collapsing’ follows Willaris. K’s 2023 collaborative EP with producer and friend jamesjamesjames, Silversun. The pair were Spotify’s Portal cover artist and bookended the release with a closing B2B set on Pitch Music and Arts Festival’s mainstage.

Ethereal and apocalyptic, ‘World Collapsing’ is the union of two massive sounds and the start of an exciting new chapter for Willaris. K.

Since the release of girl in red’s chiming debut single “i wanna be your girlfriend” Marie Ulven has been at the forefront of alt-pop with biting songs about navigating the world as a young queer woman. Her honest lyrics and intimate production thrilled listeners around the world, making the Norway-born singer-songwriter one of the streaming era’s biggest grass-roots success stories. She’s played major festivals, including Oya and Glastonbury, toured with icons like Billie Eilish and Taylor Swift, had multiple songs hit nine-figure streams and has a string of prestigious awards on her shelf. Spin Off will see girl in red perform a plethora of tracks from her sophomore album I’M DOING IT AGAIN BABY!

One of the most acclaimed pop stars and songwriters of his generation, Conan Gray is set to light up Spin Off with a host of new tracks from his hotly anticipated third album, FOUND HEAVEN after hitting the East Coast on his sold-out Australian FOUND HEAVEN ON TOUR. Four of these singles are already nearing 130 million streams and have earned praise from Billboard, Rolling Stone and more.

Rising superstar G Flip makes the kind of high-powered rock/pop music that could only come from the heart and mind of a drummer. Their sophomore album, DRUMMER, released mid-last year, soared to #1 on the ARIA charts and won 2 ARIA awards. The album also broke records with 7 songs in triple j’s Hottest 100, including “The Worst Person Alive” at #2, while earlier this year G covered Taylor Swift’s “Cruel Summer” for their Like A Version. Currently on their DRUMMER Tour, May will see G tour the US, which includes stops at Governor’s Ball and Hangout Music Festival as well as co-headline shows with The Beaches, followed by headlining dates in the UK and performance slots at Reading and Leeds Festival.

Australia’s queen of pop, Peach PRC, will be taking the stage in her old stomping grounds off the back of her biggest sold-out headline shows to date and the release of her latest single, “Secret”. And get ready to turn up the heat because Baby Gravy is joining the party! Baby Gravy AKA Yung Gravy and bbno$; have been collaborating since 2017 and have released three joint albums full of swagger.

Spin Off will be the first Australian stop for UK baroque indie five-piece, The Last Dinner Party when they bring their iconic live show, haunting melodies and explosive choruses to our shores this winter. Conceived during a wine-stained evening in Brixton, their live shows lead audiences through soaring crescendos and pin-drop silences, gathering a fervent and ever growing following with each performance. In the first half of 2024, they released their debut album Prelude to Ecstasy, won the BRIT Rising Star Award, BBC Radio 1’s Sound of 2024, and landed triple j’s feature album on its week of release. The rest of the year will see them play Primavera, Glastonbury and Roskilda Festival before heading down under, where intense demand for their Australian headline dates has already seen all venues upgraded.

Also making the trip to Adelaide is US singer-songwriter Michael Marcagi, set to deliver an authentic blend of folk-rock storytelling, rooted in age-old American musical traditions. Considered one of the most exciting rock acts in Australia, catch Old Mervs when they hit Spin Off with epic hooks and breezy guitars in tow, or groove to Newcastle favs Rum Jungle with their unique blend of psych surf rock and alt-pop, whereas proud First Nations artist Miss Kaninna is set to bring her explosive, unapologetic BLAK POP energy to life.

Make your way to the Sound Archive, a dedicated dance and electronic music area presented by Divide, featuring a custom-designed stage, production and dance space for an immersive experience. One of the most in-demand artists around, Swedish producer DJ Seinfeld will headline the stage with his diverse and energetic set. Prepare for deep cuts of jazz-tipped house and UK garage mixes from one of Melbourne’s newest and most exciting DJs, Sam Alfred, and explore the sexy Y2K techno music of jamesjamesjames with his catchy hooks and pounding bass lines. Dive into the realm of Club Angel with the moodier side of Jungle and Speed Garage with tight drums, sampled stabs and infectious vocals. Catch Kaytetye producer RONA. as she merges country and place with synths and melodies that pack an emotional punch, after FUKHED delivers one of her boisterous sets filled with relentless techno this July! BLICK BASSY teams up with Australia’s RY X on immersive new track ‘MBONDI’

Today marks the return of France-based Cameroonian singer-songwriter Blick Bassy who has just released his collaborative single with Australian artist Ry X titled ‘Mbondi’. Translating to ‘flower’ in the Bassa language, this track represents a significant milestone as the first joint effort between these two remarkable talents. ‘Mbondi’ will be added to the deluxe edition of Bassy’s recent album, ‘Madíbá’, when it is released in May this year as ‘Madíbá’ ni Mbondi’ (‘Water and Flower’).

‘Mbondi’ invites listeners on a captivating musical journey, where soulful vocals intertwine with contemporary synths to create a mesmerising auditory landscape filled with rich textures and soothing melodies.

“I have always claimed my status as an African musician, but also the contemporary aspect of my approach. In African musical culture, there is unfortunately little of this type of work on the sound itself, on the exploration of new techniques. I would like to position myself as an African avant-garde artist who, with each of his new projects, offers new ideas in the treatment of sound and melody.”
BLICK BASSY

As the latest artistic offering from Blick, ‘Madíbá’ ni Mbondi’, not only delves into innovative sound techniques but also addresses pressing environmental issues across Africa. Like most of his work, this project underscores Blick’s deep connection to the continent and highlights the critical need to conserve its natural resources.

In a previous expression of his connection to country, we saw Blick take the stage in Western Australia for Perth Festival 2023 where he told the story of tomorrow’s Africa through a dance-tale titled Bikutsi 3000. The artist went on to talk about this story on the ABC in February of last year.

Prior to collaborating on ‘Mbondi’, Ry X established himself by working with electronic artists such as Ame (Howling) and Adam Freeland (The Acid). The Australian-born artist has gone on to realise huge global success through featuring in the Top 40 charts, amassing hundreds of millions of streams and selling out shows across the world.

Despite his international success, Ry X’s upbringing in the small riverside community of Woodford Island, New South Wales, instilled in him a deep connection with nature. Even now, living in Santa Monica, he continues to draw inspiration from the natural world, seamlessly incorporating its elements into his music.

“Water is a deep theme in my work – it’s linked to the emotional realm”
RY X

‘Mbondi’ is a showcase of Bassy’s and Ry X’s ability to seamlessly blend their unique styles with nods to shared influences such as Bon Iver and James Blake sprinkled throughout. Produced and composed with Romain Jovion, the ethereal synth arrangement leaves plenty of room for both Bassy’s and Ry X’s soulful voices to work their magic.

Following his recent sold-out performances at Paris’ Cigale and London’s Jazz Café, Blick Bassy is gearing up for his North American tour which begins this month. This tour will feature tracks from the ‘Madíbá’ album, which has already garnered over 500k streams across various platforms, as well as new music that is due to be released with ‘Madíbá’ ni Mbondi’.

‘Mbondi’ is one of four new tracks that are set to feature on ‘Madíbá’ ni Mbondi’ which will be released on May 17th. Since its initial release, the album has gone on to receive acclaim across the globe for its innovative sound and profound lyricism as it blended the worlds of soul, folk, and electro.

PRAISE

“Few modern artists have the ability to reach the listener emotionally quite like Blick Bassy. For that, for the fine songs that do feature and for the worthy cause that inspired the album, you should certainly check Mádibá out.”
LOUDER THAN WAR

“Madíbá is an exceptional addition to a body of work that places Blick Bassy as one of the most significant African artists producing music today.”
JOYZINE

“..a brilliantly stirring concept album that follows its own heartbeat and is sure to make a splash by means of its mere existence..”
GREEDY FOR BEST MUSIC

“..one of Africa’s most inventive and distinctive singer-songwriters.”
THE GUARDIAN

‘Mbondi’ is out on Tuesday, April 9th

‘Fragile as Humans’

“Fragile as humans and made of who we love…”

LISTEN TO

FRAGILE AS HUMANS ALBUM

“Barker’s writing has never been so pin sharp”  —MOJO ★★★★

The first song Emily Barker recorded for her latest record, Fragile as Humans, was its title track. To capture the “hyper-real recording” he desired, producer Luke Potashnick surrounded Barker with microphones at The Wool Hall, an impressive sixteenth century stone building converted into a studio by Tears For Fears in the early ’80s. She accompanied herself on Potashnick’s 1938 Gibson L37 archtop guitar. They recorded six takes, but the first was the best.

Written and recorded as her time living in the UK was coming to a close, Fragile as Humans sees Barker turn her lyrical gaze inwards. The expansive themes of her previous album, A Dark Murmuration of Words (released 2020), are replaced by an empathetic concern for matters more personal, familial, closer to home.

Feathered Thing was written while she navigated cumulative grief following a miscarriage. “It’s basically about grieving an idea or imagined future,” she clarifies of the song, the central image inspired by Emily Dickinson’s poem ‘“Hope” is the thing with feathers’. Commencing gently, with oscillating piano and distant drums, the arrangement gradually transforms into an instrumental dervish of vibrant strings and cymbal crashes. Throughout, Barker’s vocals float and hover like a slipstreaming feather.

“I had this idea of putting Emily out front, diving further into what her voice could do and exploring much quieter parts of her voice,” Potashnick explains. “Every single line had to be faultless, otherwise the illusion and the contract between her and the listener would collapse.”

Barker’s introduction to Potashnick had come via their mutual friend, producer and engineer Dom Monks (Big Thief, Nick Cave, Laura Marling). Barker shared some demos she’d been working on and fondly recalls, “Luke noted my harmonic choices and lyrics – two aspects I’d worked particularly hard at – and asked what sort of album I’d like to make.”

Potashnick set about placing each song under the microscope, line by line. “I’d never spent so long working on the songs with a producer before and really trusted Luke with his background in songwriting,” Barker reflects. “The songs were made stronger through him pushing me to dig deeper, to tweak a part, to substantiate a choice.”

Barker worked on editing the songs while touring the States with Mary Chapin Carpenter, performing and refining them on the road. On her return she was ready to begin recording.

The album’s calling card, the filmic single Wild to be Sharing This Moment, introduced the production ideas: “We wanted to push the dynamics, so it could be intimate in parts and cinematic in others,” Barker reveals, “whilst also exercising restraint; creating tension.”

Ahead of the Fragile as Humans songwriting sessions, Barker wrote the word ‘EXPERIMENT!’ on a postcard and pinned it to a cork board in her writing room alongside family photos, postcards of Aretha Franklin and Red-tailed black cockatoos, and “a strip of paper from my niece wishing me a happy day”. This word, in all caps, served as a reminder for Barker to challenge herself creatively and actively pursue the unknown: “I wanted to favour the odd and less obvious lyric, chord progression, melody.”

The closing track, Acisoma, began as an imagined question to Sir David Attenborough about life and death, but soon metamorphosed into something completely different. “I sat at the piano and moved my fingers around trying not to think about it too much,” she recounts. “Some chords fell into a loose order, I set my voice free to roam and hit record on my iPhone. Listening back to my sketch, it didn’t sound like anything I’d written before – my word [EXPERIMENT!] had infiltrated my process.”

When it came to recording Acisoma, Potashnick revealed—just before hitting RECORD—that the microphone he’d set up was the one Dom Monks had used on Nick Cave’s vocals at Alexandra Palace. “I loved the sound of Idiot Prayer – using that very same mic lent me an appropriate mood for capturing the song.”

Potashnick’s vision is present throughout the album: the meditative, introverted Loneliness was a song Barker had envisioned with full-band production, but Potashnicks’s instinct was to keep it minimal: a felted piano, a dulcimer and a trio of strings to add haunting textures. Barker acknowledges, “Luke got it right…it’s lonelier this way.”

Half of the album’s tracks are solo, Barker accompanying herself either on guitar or piano. These songs were recorded first and then she was joined by the session players – Tim Harries (electric and double bass/piano/string arrangements), Tom Visser (drums) and Richard Causon (keys) – at The Wool Hall, tracking the remaining songs in a matter of days.

Album opener With Small We Start showcases the band, the song’s warm acoustic aesthetic drawing the listener into Barker’s discourse on the benefits of concentrating on the simple things in life.

Call it a Day chronicles Emily’s positive experiences – friendships, music connections – from two-plus decades spent living in the UK.

“Making this record was a beautiful way to wrap up my 21 years of living in the UK before heading home to WA,” she points out.

As a teenager, Barker left Western Australia, with an acoustic guitar and a backpack, first arriving in England in the summer of 2000. She has previously written entire albums about longing for home, but Fragile as Humans was inspired and written in both hemispheres: during a writing residency in Stroud, while people-watching at London’s Kings Cross station and upon returning to WA following the state’s strict, pandemic-related border closures.

The ten songs on Fragile as Humans take us on a deep dive into the human condition, an unflinching self-examination of grief, pain, loneliness and loss, at the same time sparkling with hope, optimism and connection.

“If I could choose one word for people to hold in their minds as they listen to this album,” Emily muses, “that word would be: compassion.”

Fragile as Humans is scheduled for release on 3 May through Everyone Sang / Kartel Music Group.

This year’s exciting theme is “Vive La France”, and from 10th to 14th July 2024, AIRBEAT ONE will be transporting the aura of France to the Neustadt-Glewe airfield. The electronic music world will join together to celebrate the 21st edition of one of Europe’s largest and most eagerly anticipated festivals. With more than 70,000 music fans per day, and over 225,000 fans across the five-day event, the festival city being built in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, will for five days become the fourth largest city across the region.

More than 60,000 tickets have already been sold for a festival that’s still months away, and to add excitement to anticipation, and reward fans, organizers now release the full 228-artist lineup.

For countless years, the AIRBEAT ONE Main Stage with its unforgettably monstrous dimensions, 180 meters wide and 50 meters tall, has been an eye-catching mesmerizing sight, with festival fans often visibly stunned by its sheer size.
