INTRODUCING KIWI FEST: Melbourne's Festival for New Zealand Music, Culture, Arts, Food and Drink   Saturday 15th February 2020 – Footscray Community Arts Centre All Ages - 2pm-10pm Meet the newest Music, Culture, Arts, Food and Drinks festival on the block: Kiwi Fest is an All-Ages annual one-day celebration of NEW ZEALAND culture, bringing together Melbourne’s Kiwi communities for a diverse festival of all things AOTEAROA. This week the festival will also be donating $10 from every ticket sold between 15 January – 19 January to the Victorian Bushfire Appeal.   On Saturday 15 February Kiwi Fest is taking over the lush, green, outdoor riverside lawn at Footscray Community Arts Centre, the perfect setting for live music, cultural performances, traditional and artisanal food and drink from New Zealand’s world-renowned industry, as well as a Kiwi mākete village (markets) selling a wide array of Kiwiana, Māori, Pacific Island and contemporary goods and wares. Kiwi Fest 2020 aims to bring together and share all classic beloved Kiwi things to the suburbs of Melbourne. Created by old high school friends and Wellington Ex-pats Jacob Howard and Chris Lemeulu, the pair reconnected over a few beers watching an All Blacks game, lamenting the lack of events serving the large community of Kiwis in Melbourne.   Together Jacob and Chris started gathering the local community and business figureheads with a clear vision to make Kiwi Fest an annual celebration of Melbourne’s New Zealand community. “We began crafting an event that offered a bit of a ‘Slice of Heaven’ for both Kiwis here and anyone else who wanted to taste a little sample of New Zealand culture. It was important for us that this was community based at its heart, was 100% outdoors and captured our relaxed ethos, great products and rich culture” says Creative Director Jacob Howard.   THE MUSIC The inaugural event is to be headlined by Che-Fu, the legendary hip hop and RnB icon. With the most top ten songs of any individual in New Zealand musical history, Che-Fu is one of New Zealand’s most successful and beloved recording artists. Originally coming to attention as a founding member of the iconic Kiwi band Supergroove, Che went on to forge a solo career unrivalled in its success and the trail that it blazed not only for hip hop but Kiwi music. Audiences will also be treated to other local and Pasifika artists Including roots heavyweight Israel Starr, the soulful Iva Lamkum, beatmaker and DMC World Champion DJ SPELL, the Polynesian roots infused reggae vibes of The Refugees, and Amin Payne will be brining his G-Funk and disco sound along with very special guest vocalist and fellow Kiwi Stacey. THE FOOD Hangi boys is the story of 4 guys from the North Island showcasing their heritage and culture through traditionally cooked NZ cuisine. With over 40 years of combined experience in Hospitality internationally, living here in the renowned food capital of Australia. The unique flavour of Hangi stems from pre-colonialism days passed on through generations of Maori, it was a staple diet for many celebrations. Using spices such as horopito, fresh market produce and native wood from our homeland we aim to capture the attention of both international guests and kiwis living abroad right here in Melbourne. THE DRINK Garage Project was started in Wellington by two best mates with a passion for the good stuff. Within a few short years, they turned their microbrewery into the widely acclaimed best brewery in New Zealand. Garage Project dominated the GABS Hottest 100 Kiwi Craft Beers for 2019, taking out first place with its Pernicious Weed, second with its DFA, and landing a total of 25 beers on the list overall. THE CULTURE The inaugural Kiwi Fest celebrates the diverse Kiwi community with Māori and Pacific Island Cultural Performances from Ngā Mātai Pūrua, Collateral Culture and Nga Uri Whaioranga all Highlighting bringing people together through shared history and culture, learning forgotten histories and the education of traditional rites and practices. Perth-based, Zimbabwe-born rapper/producer Arno Faraji today shares his new single and video for ‘Bass Jumpin’. Listen and watch HERE.  ‘Bass Jumpin’ is another warm and wavy offering from the 19-year-old artist who is outpacing a crowded field of competition by developing his own unmatched sound with each new release, pairing a raucous, sample-filled beat with Faraji’s quick-witted raps and impossible-to-hold-down flow. It’s a sound whose infectious appeal crosses lines of genre and taste amongst rap fans. While his vibe-heavy, feel-good focus owes much to Soundcloud and party rap, his stylish, future-leaning production brings to mind KAYTRANADA and Injury Reserve, with the sly, nimble bars of Goldlink and an irresistible sense of playfulness that recalls the likes of Childish Gambino.  Of the release/video, Faraji says: “Bass Jumpin' is about battling your demons (whatever they are) even when things seem crazy and making opportunities instead of waiting for them! It’s had a few lives, produced by Moktar then remixed by Moktar + Just A Gent." The latest in a run of hype-worthy singles he’s dropped since nabbing the triple j Unearthed High Prize back in 2017 (becoming the first hip hop artist to do so in the process), ‘Bass Jumpin’ follows on from ‘Scalin’, co-produced by Milan Ring, which received high rotation across triple j and FBi Radio, and his collaboration with Remi & Sensible J, ‘Bless (What It’s Like)’, which made its way onto various Spotify and Apple Music playlists, including ‘Best of the Week’ (Apple Music) and ‘New Music Friday Aus & NZ’ (Spotify), and has since amassed over a million streams on Spotify.  The release of ‘Bass Jumpin’ also caps an incredibly exciting year for the young West Australian artist, coming off the back of his debut Australian ‘Faraji SZN’ headline tour and support slots for Kwame and Cosmo’s Midnight on their respective national tours, playing to sold-out crowds at the Enmore and Forum Theatres.  ‘Bass Jumpin’ is out now, buy/stream it here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u9toFvfredg Stay connected with Arno Faraji:  Facebook | Twitter | Instagram | Soundcloud | Unearthed

Their charming ability to marry the worlds of jangly indie guitars, the heart-on-your-sleeve lyricism of country music, and the joyous bright spark of pop punk, makes them one of the truly unique voices in contemporary rock, and just a delight to introduce your ears to.   And they make that introduction with an exceptional new video for this new single as well, as they aptly blast their sound into outer space. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uqDNufv66Wg&t=6s&utm_source=MASTER+MEDIA+LIST&utm_campaign=2923fd2cd0-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2019_10_01_02_25_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_fa53bddde5-2923fd2cd0-259292265 Ratboys, featuring core members Julia Steiner and Dave Sagan, have commanded well-earned praise from international taste-makers since they launched the band in 2009. They’ve released critically acclaimed singles, EPs (including a full 8-bit covers EP) and albums, with the likes of Stereogum, Brooklyn Vegan, DIY, and NPR all singing their praises. Printer’s Devil though, is their most fully formed vision as a band, as they now embark on a new era as a four-piece with drummer Marcus Nuccio and bassist Sean Neumann. Recorded live at Decade Music Studios in Chicago and produced by the band and engineer Erik Rasmussen, the album captures the bombastic, electrified fun of their live show in a bottle and showcases their growing chemistry as a tight-knit group.   Steiner wrote the majority of Printer’s Devil with Sagan while she was experiencing a dramatic shift in her own foundations, demoing out songs in her Louisville, Kentucky childhood home, which had just been sold and emptied out.   “Demoing there was almost too intense,” Steiner says. “I kept writing in my journal that it feels like we shouldn’t be there. I don’t know if that feeling made its way directly into the lyrics, but to me, the songs will always be connected to that sense of home and time passing.”   Upheaval and change are clear themes spread throughout the songs of Printer’s Devil, but the moments of uncertainty are embraced as a necessary part of growing. And through it all, Ratboys’ dynamics still beautifully thread together the kinds of intimate folk songs and devastating alt-country tracks that fans have come to expect from them, showcasing a rare range that invites listeners to imagine the band blowing out a 2,000-cap room or playing quietly next to you in the living room.   An anachronism for a printer’s apprentice, the phrase “printer’s devil” came serendipitously to Steiner while she and Sagan were demoing in that same house. “I was reading about Walt Whitman and there was this very casual sentence that said Whitman worked as a printer’s devil in a printing house in Brooklyn.” She pauses on the phrase. “I had never seen those two words together. They are both very powerful on their own, and together it was just a complete unknown, a total mystery. One of Whitman’s jobs was to test the ink. I don’t know if this actually happened, but I have a feeling that maybe this was one of the first times he experimented with poetry.”   The title Printer’s Devil symbolizes this journey of new discovery, finding things from one to the other and letting meaning snowball and continuing down that path. On the title track that closes the record, using a simple loop and a repeating chord progression, Steiner slowly inserts abstractions, like testing the ink on the page. The motion continues, the band never breaking from the meditative loop, finding meaning in the smallest things, letting the idea guide the way.   “To be able to embrace a simple idea,” Steiner says, “and follow it where it needs to go, was revolutionary to me.” The song is both a punctuation mark and a cliffhanger. It seems that Ratboys are on the right path, and the journey has just begun.   ‘ALIEN WITH A SLEEP MASK ON’ IS OUT NOW! PRAISE FOR WESTERMAN “Westerman’s songwriting takes in the tumult of a whirring mind and turns it into music that has the power to soothe modern anxieties, if not solve them"  Pitchfork “Developing imperfect ideas into something brilliant” Noisey “Manages to delicately balance melodic complexity and a variety of different instruments in a way that sounds not just easy, but effortless” Dazed Today, West London's Westerman announces his signing to Play It Again Sam and shares his first release on the label. 'Blue Comanche' is a beautifully evocative three-minute song, Westerman's lyrics cutting deeper as guitar strings and buoyant synths slowly blossom into the atmospheric pop world he introduced on his critically-acclaimed Ark EP. Listen HERE. Speaking of the song, Westerman says, "Blue Comanche is about the inevitability of environmental loss as a consequence of modernization. I'm not a Luddite, I don't think we should go back to the Stone Age or anything, but there's still something profoundly sad about what's being lost. I find party politics frustrating because it's so cyclical. I'm obsessed with ethics, and politics and ethics can be bad bedfellows. I'm political in a solitary way. There are issues that I think are important and occupy my thoughts, but I struggle with organized politics. In the party system, there's inevitable compromise and concession, which is frustrating. That's why I like writing, you can say what you want without any dilution. I wanted this to be a calming song though, not angry. Today it's so easy to live in an echo chamber of bad news, but if you look hard you can still see individual acts of kindness everywhere. You have to be engaged and stay sensitive to suffering, but it's not constructive to live in that space all the time." Westerman's music is graceful and self-reflective, but more than this he leaves enough space in his songs to evoke questions about modern anxieties and what's at the essence of being human. The latest song continues Westerman's journey from pop maverick to one of the most vital voices coming out of the UK. Heading to Australia to perform at the upcoming Pitch Music & Arts Festival, FJAAK, Objekt and SPFDJ is part of a small collective of niche techno artists highly sought-after across the globe. For one night only they will bring their brand of cutting edge dance music to The Bottom End for what will surely be a sell-out show. FJAAK (Live) (GER) From a Spandau-Basement experiment to a now well-established force in contemporary techno, the rise of FJAAK has seen the duo become an internationally renowned creative force. Gracing stages at global festivals ADE and Awakenings, alongside numerous slots at the Circoloco Ibiza, District 8, and techno institution Berghain, their dedicated fanbase comes in spades. With eleven singles & EPs, two albums and a couple of compilation appearances under their belt, FJAAK can look back on an extensive discography that packs quite a punch. This will be FJAAK’s Australian debut. Objekt (GER) Crossing a plethora of genres within his work, Objekt fuses electro, acid, bass, dub, and experimental into his work, while maintaining solid foundations in techno. Across his subsequent club output on labels such as Hessle Audio, Leisure System, Power Vacuum and his own imprint label, audacious sound design and meticulous arrangements have served to buckle and twist dancefloor conventions. His 150-bpm IDM opus ‘Ganzfeld’, released on a split EP with Dopplereffekt, was selected as Resident Advisor’s #1 track of 2014, while Mixmag named ‘Theme From Q’ their top record of 2017. SPFDJ (GER) Hailing originally from Sweden, SPFDJ’s beginnings were in London as part of the infamous collective Universe of Tang. Occasionally working at vicious speeds, acidic techno climes are fused with kaleidoscopic sounds, making for unique output. Alongside producer sprintf, she co-runs the Cranial Handles transmission, the System.out sound system, and the latest party coerced into life: Power Play. Drawing on the many and varied collaborative efforts at the heart of her activity, SPFDJ delivers Intrepid Skin, her label and outlet for autonomous developments. SPFDJ is as deft in moving the most debaucherous underground space as she is at opening the floor for big clubs like Corsica Studios and Oval Space. ANNOUNCE DEBUT ALBUM HIGH RISK BEHAVIOUR OUT MARCH 27  THE CLAP SINGLE & VIDEO RELEASED TODAY The Chats have announced their debut album High Risk Behaviour, out March 27 on Bargain Bin Records/Cooking Vinyl Australia.   Pre-order High Risk Behaviour here To mark this momentous occasion the band have released an eye-watering new video for their new single The Clap, take it in below on an empty stomach. This is the closest you’ll ever hear The Chats get to write a love song (that is unless you are talking about their love of beer). A cautionary tale about a root gone wrong (direct quote), and an STI that just wouldn’t leave. The Clap features guitarist Pricey on vocal duties and is taken from the forthcoming album. WATCH THE VIDEO FOR THE CLAP HERE The Chats have the cops to thank for the title of their debut album, High Risk Behaviour.   If they didn’t keep hassling drummer Matt Boggis about skating in places he shouldn’t – and giving him tickets listing that as the offence – who knows what idiotic title the self-proclaimed “dropkick drongos from the Sunshine Coast of Australia” would have come up with.   And yet it’s the perfect name for an album that does not fuck around. An album that sounds like Aussie greats the Cosmic Psychos downing beers with The Saints before doing shots with the Buzzcocks and then spewing it all up behind the kebab van. An album that’s over in 28 blistering, funny, sweaty, unforgettable minutes, with half of its 14 songs failing to reach the two-minute mark. Some might call the Queensland trio lazy. Singer-bassist Eamon Sandwith sees it differently.   “I don’t want to make the songs boring, so I just keep them short and sweet,” shrugs the man whose mullet became an international talking point following the success of 2017 viral hit “Smoko”. “We try not to think about it or complicate it too much. You don’t want to force it or the song’s going to turn out crap.”   Since forming in their mate’s bong shed in 2016 while still at high school, that attitude has taken The Chats – completed by guitarist Josh Price, who once wrote a song called How Many Do You Do? in which he boasted of doing 52 “dingers” in a night – from the sleepy coastal village of Coolum (located roughly two hours north of Brisbane) to venues around the world. Their fanbase includes Dave Grohl, who loved the video for Smoko so much he showed it to Josh Homme, who then asked the trio to support Queens of the Stone Age on their 2018 Australian tour. Iggy Pop is also a card-carrying member of The Chats’ fanclub, requesting that they support him in Australia in early 2019 and peppering them with questions like, “What’s a smoko?” and “What’s a dart?”   The rest of 2019 was spent taking the world by storm armed with nothing more than guitars, drums, shorts, shirts and thongs (or, if it was a formal occasion, sandals and socks). Shows across Australia and the UK were sold out, and they performed their first gigs in America (the LA show was attended by Homme, Grohl and Arctic Monkeys’ frontman Alex Turner). The band capped off the year with a return visit to Britain, selling out venues such as London’s 2,300-capacity 02 Forum.   Suffice it to say, life has changed a fair bit for The Chats over the past two years.   “Well, I don’t have to work at the supermarket anymore,” says Sandwith.   That he does not. In fact Sandwith and his mates have been too busy touring, writing songs and, when their gigs took them to Victoria, dropping into engineer Billy Gardner’s studio in the coastal city of Geelong for a day of recording. That they chose this piecemeal approach explains why the album took 18 months to finish – a luxury considering 2017 EP Get This In Ya took four hours to record one hungover afternoon.   “If we’d just done a week and slogged it out we could have had an album before now but we just kept going in there and making newer and better songs so it’s hard to put a stop on it,” says Sandwith.   The sessions were fast. “Some of the songs were first-take and we were like, ‘That’s good, whatever’,” says Sandwith. “We’re really not perfectionists.”   Remarkably, they still found time to experiment with exotic instruments such as... a tambourine.   The end product is an album that buzzes like an out-of-control chainsaw, propelled by Sandwith’s spoken-spit-sung vocals, their three-chords-is-one-too-many approach, and an exacting combination of youth, vigour and drunkenness. But don’t mistake simple for stupid – if it was easy to make songs this short, this catchy and this downright brilliant, everyone would be doing it.   “I think they’re good songs,” says Sandwith. “And at the end of the day, if I like it then fuck it, who cares if other people do?”   Despite being the subject of a record label bidding war, The Chats are releasing High Risk Behaviour on their own label, Bargain Bin Records. It’s indicative of a band that have embraced DIY culture since day one, to the point where Sandwith used to spend his days at the post office sending out merch orders.   “We thought, if we just do it ourselves we don’t have to worry about getting swindled,” says Sandwith. “We’ve always done it our way.”   Their determination to do things “our way” extends to their music, which is why High Risk Behaviour delivers everything you’ve come to love from The Chats – only more of it – and confirms their status as Queensland’s greatest ever export (apart from Bundy Rum).   “I just want people to have a good time,” says Sandwith of the album. “I want them to dance around and have a beer and enjoy it. We don’t make songs for people to look at in a fucking emotional or intellectual way. We just make songs for people to jump around and have fun to.”   CATCH THE CHATS AT COACHELLA - APRIL 10 & 17   ACCESS FULL ALBUM BIO HERE   Follow The Chats: FACEBOOK | TWITTER | INSTAGRAM | WEB Follow Bargain Bin Records: INSTAGRAM | WEB

ANNOUNCE DEBUT ALBUM
HIGH RISK BEHAVIOUR
OUT MARCH 27

THE CLAP SINGLE & VIDEO RELEASED TODAY

The Chats have announced their debut album High Risk Behaviour, out March 27 on Bargain Bin Records/Cooking Vinyl Australia.

To mark this momentous occasion the band have released an eye-watering new video for their new single The Clap, take it in below on an empty stomach.

The Chats have the cops to thank for the title of their debut album, High Risk Behaviour.

You don’t want to force it or the song’s going to turn out crap.”

Since forming in their mate’s bong shed in 2016 while still at high school, that attitude has taken The Chats – completed by guitarist Josh Price, who once wrote a song called How Many Do You Do? in which he boasted of doing 52 “dingers” in a night – from the sleepy coastal village of Coolum (located roughly two hours north of Brisbane) to venues around the world. Their fanbase includes Dave Grohl, who loved the video for Smoko so much he showed it to Josh Homme, who then asked the trio to support Queens of the Stone Age on their 2018 Australian tour. Iggy Pop is also a card-carrying member of The Chats’ fanclub, requesting that they support him in Australia in early 2019 and peppering them with questions like, “What’s a smoko?” and “What’s a dart?”

The rest of 2019 was spent taking the world by storm armed with nothing more than guitars, drums, shorts, shirts and thongs (or, if it was a formal occasion, sandals and socks).

“Well, I don’t have to work at the supermarket anymore,”
says Sandwith.

“We’re really not perfectionists.”

Remarkably, they still found time to experiment with exotic instruments such as… a tambourine.

“And at the end of the day, if I like it then fuck it, who cares if other people do?”

Despite being the subject of a record label bidding war, The Chats are releasing High Risk Behaviour on their own label, Bargain Bin Records. It’s indicative of a band that have embraced DIY culture since day one, to the point where Sandwith used to spend his days at the post office sending out merch orders.

“We thought, if we just do it ourselves we don’t have to worry about getting swindled,” says Sandwith. “We’ve always done it our way.”

Their determination to do things “our way” extends to their music, which is why High Risk Behaviour delivers everything you’ve come to love from The Chats – only more of it – and confirms their status as Queensland’s greatest ever export (apart from Bundy Rum).

“I just want people to have a good time,” says Sandwith of the album. “I want them to dance around and have a beer and enjoy it. We don’t make songs for people to look at in a fucking emotional or intellectual way. We just make songs for people to jump around and have fun to.”

Handsome Tours is thrilled to announce the return of New York City’s Frankie Cosmos. Last in the Southern Hemisphere in 2017, Frankie Cosmos are heading back for Meadow Music Festival, as well as a string of intimate headline dates in March/April.  Originally the solo project of prolific New York City-based songwriter Greta Kline, Frankie Cosmos blossomed into a four-piece with a collection of globally acclaimed albums to their name. The group’s most recent 2019 offering, Close It Quietly (listen on Spotify, Apple and Bandcamp), is a continual reframing of the known. It’s like giving yourself a haircut or rearranging your room. You know your hair, you know your room. Here’s the same hair, the same room, seen again as something new. Close It Quietly takes the trademark Frankie Cosmos micro-universe and upends it, spilling outwards into a swirl of referentiality that’s a marked departure from earlier releases, imagining and reimagining motifs and sounds throughout the album. Kline delivers sharp observations and candid confessions via short bursts of melodious indie pop that Rolling Stone labelled "the best yet from an artist who’s spent the last few years on one of the more impressive songwriting binges in indie-pop". Frankie Cosmos’ fourth studio release is a manifestation of the band’s collaborative spirit: Greta Kline and longtime bandmates Lauren Martin (synth), Luke Pyenson (drums), and Alex Bailey (bass) luxuriated in studio time with Gabe Wax (War on Drugs, Fleet Foxes), who engineered and co-produced the record with the band. Tour Dates Friday 21 February: Glamorama, Melbourne Saturday 22 February: Tusk, Wollongong Saturday 22 February: Goodbar, Sydney In 2018, Resident Advisor referred to Man Power as ‘intergalactic house music’. That description is as close as anyone has ever come to describing his sound. In the time Man Power has existed, as an alias of Newcastle’s Geoff Kirkwood, it’s been challenging to pin down what he is all about.  One look at his impressive discography should give you an idea of what he is about musically. It includes Life & Death, Hivern Discs, Optimo Trax, ESP Institute and Correspondent, alongside his own Me Me Me and newly minted Now Now Now imprints. His club bookings include the world's best, and he has played everywhere from Panorama Bar to Glasgow's Sub Club. His debut Australian tour has been a long time coming, and this February the wait is finally over… What makes Man Power difficult to categorise is what makes him so vital - each record, each set and each remix is unique. Drawing on house, techno, Italo, disco, post-punk, new wave and beyond, Kirkwood’s ability to bend well-worn genre tropes to his own will is impressive. Occasionally, he’ll even decontextualise embarrassing pop records to rapturous responses. As with any DJ/Producer biog, this doesn’t quite work unless it contains name drops aplenty so, as a fun game, try to unearth another artist in electronic music who has had a firm thumbs up from such a disparate bunch of artists like Ben UFO, Elton John, Bryan Ferry, Andrew Weatherall, DJ Harvey and DJ Bone recently… Connect with Man Power:

Nearly six years since their last Australian tour, Sebadoh are finally dragging their lo-fi slacker genius back to our shores this month! Due to demand, they’ve added a Perth show at Mojos Bar in Fremantle on Sunday 26th January and today announce local tour support acts (see listing below). With the release this year of their acclaimed return to form album Act Surprised, their first since 2013’s Defend Yourself, the band have returned to the genius that made them an essential part of every right thinking person’s record collection. On leaving Dinosaur Jr in 1988 and teaming up with old mate Eric Gaffney, Lou Barlow almost invented a new genre in rock n’ roll, signing to the seminal Seattle label Sub Pop and releasing a couple of cassette only releases that are much sought after collector’s items. Despite several line-up changes Sebadoh effectively became an outlet for Barlow’s creative efforts outside of Dinosaur Jr. As the obligatory hiatus for the first part of the 2000s kept fans wondering if they’d seen the last of them, 2007 saw Sebadoh reform to much acclaim and the promise of new recordings. That promise has now led to a second post-reformation recording, with Barlow taking time off from Dinosaur Jr to regroup with Jason Loewenstein and Bob D’Amico to track 15 new songs last year, with Justin Pizzoferrato, the engineer behind many Dinosaur Jr albums at the helm. The studio results see Loewenstein taking the lead on his more lo-fi style musings paired against his co-conspirator’s folkier style offerings, with the band actually spending more time working on this album than many of their previous minimalist efforts. “In the past,” says Barlow, “we would write in the studio and the songs would develop on the road.“ This time, we did some rehearsals a few weeks before recording,” adds Loewenstein, “which we almost never do. So we got a chance to not use the first take and took time to finesse things, which we also don’t usually do, so that was a good step.” For their first tour down under in almost six years, with a new album under their belts and their lo-fi garage slacker pop offering the blueprint for many acts worldwide, this is a rare chance for Australian fans to enjoy their seminal sound live. SEBADOH Announce Perth Show & Tour Supports

From Sophie Payten (Gordi): Australia is on fire. People are losing their loved ones, their homes and their communities. There have been irreparable losses to our wildlife and national parks. As in all times of tragedy, people are giving everything they can. The efforts of the Rural Fire Service, Red Cross and Wildlife Rescue are nothing short of heroic. Yet we have a dormant political system that is watching our country dry up.  These fires have fed on years of drought, on dry lifeless scrub. GORDI – ‘THE COST’ SONG FOR AUSTRALIAN BUSHFIRE RELIEF

by the partae January 15, 2020
written by the partae
From Sophie Payten (Gordi):

Australia is on fire.

It is simply not an issue to debate – our country is heating from the climate crisis and now people are dying because of it. We cannot survive the inaction. We need our leaders to lead.

I come from a small farming community that is drought-stricken – Canowindra in rural New South Wales.

ALEXISONFIRE DEBUTS NEW SONG “SEASON OF THE FLOOD”

by the partae January 15, 2020
written by the partae

ALEXISONFIRE is starting 2020 with a bang. The band has just released a new song, “Season Of The Flood”, available to stream and purchase HERE.

A seductive, hypnotic, seven-minute slow-burner anchored by haunting three-part harmonies and heavy reverb-filled guitars, the song notably features AOF’s George Pettit singing off the top for the first time. The track comes on the heels of “Familiar Drugs” and “Complicit” released last year, marking the first time the band released new music in almost 10 years.

“I’m very proud of this new song,” says Pettit. “There were some first time attempts for us and we all really came together in the studio to make this song what it is. This was also my first time singing with Dallas on a song. I know I’ve been playing in a band with Dal for almost 20 years, but damn, that guy’s voice could melt an angel.”

STREAM “SEASON OF THE FLOOD” HERE

“Season Of The Flood” is now available on vinyl by pre-order through the band’s website, theonlybandever.com. The limited pressing is available as a single-sided standard black 10” vinyl with a laser-etched b-side. A limited edition white variant will be randomly inserted throughout the stock quantities of black vinyl. Along with the 10” vinyl, AOF will have a new online exclusive “Season Of The Flood” inspired t-shirt for sale, designed by graphic artist Jeremy Dean, best known for his “Wonders of Black Flag” prints. This T-shirt is part of a collection of Jeremy Dean x Alexisonfire merchandise items inspired by the songs, “Familiar Drugs”, “Complicit” and now “Season Of The Flood” with cover art design once again by Nick Steinhardt.

The song was produced by AOF long-time friend, the late Karl “Horse” Bareham (City and Colour), and mixed by Grammy-award winning Jacquire King (Tom Waits, Kings of Leon, Modest Mouse). The album cover and 10” package features many personal nods honouring Karl as the song is the last of a trilogy of tracks Bareham produced for the band.

An official video for single “Familiar Drugs” directed by Michael Maxxis (who directed AOF’s personal favourite video for “The Northern” and City and Colour’s “Fragile Bird”, “Thirst”, and “Lover Come Back”).

On the heels of new music in 2019, AOF performed a handful of sold-out shows for lucky fans around the world, including one show in London, UK, and two consecutive nights each in New York, Los Angeles, and Toronto’s Budweiser Stage. Each of the first two dates in NY, L.A. and Toronto sold-out quickly with Alexisonfire having the distinction of being one of a handful of Canadian artists to perform two consecutive nights at the iconic Toronto venue alongside City and Colour, Drake, The Tragically Hip, and Sarah McLachlan. A highlight of the evening is when the mascot for NBA reigning champions The Toronto Raptors, aptly named The Raptor, kicked off the first show after Toronto’s Game six victory over Golden State the previous night.

It is with great delight that I OH YOU share ‘Dark Star’, a cutting single about the murky depths of infatuation and the final track to drop from Jack River’s forthcoming Stranger Heart EP ahead of its release on Valentine’s Day (Fri 14 Feb). Premiered last night via triple j Good Nights, and with a video premiere from Flood Magazine (US), ‘Dark Star’ joins first single ‘Later Flight’ and follow up piano ballad ‘Closer’, and sees River tap into long-past feelings and sing of the dark obsession underlying young love. When Rankin was 21 years old, she says she dreamed the bridge into being: "a racy, guitar-y, sentimental song that made you feel like you're driving past your ex's house". Rankin imagined a song that replicated the feeling of "having your heart dragged through the room" while listening to Oasis. Pitched high, the sweetness of her voice betrays the desperate, wanting plea that grows out of a feeling of being abandoned or forgotten. ‘Later Flight’ was River’s first single following the deluxe reissue of her three-time ARIA-nominated, critically acclaimed debut LP Sugar Mountain in May 2019. The track premiered on triple j Breakfast before quickly becoming the #1 most played song and saw strong support from the likes of Spotify and Apple Music, leading to the track and video being streamed over half a million times since its release last October. Follow up piano ballad ‘Closer’ made a splash on streaming platforms with accompanying the stunning video getting picked up by MTV and Rage. In the digital age, where inspiration can feel contrived and a search for authenticity often begins and ends with a hashtag, on Stranger Heart River has drawn a road map for an alternative way to feel and process. With this release, River set out to make music that sounds like a feeling and ‘Dark Star’ over delivers, transporting the listener back to their first unrequited love; a crushing state of both total euphoria and draining fixation.   Jack River recently played Grapevine Gathering in VIC, NSW and WA and is taking to the stage at Party In The Paddock next month. In late December, as a holiday present to her fans, Jack River announced she was giving away a special acoustic performance to one lucky fan that wished to have her play at their wedding, party or event. The competition winner will be announced in early February, to enter simply DM Jack River on Facebook Messenger starting the message saying – ‘play at my party’.  'Dark Star' Jack River Single out now through I OH YOU Available to buy/stream here Stranger Heart EP Jack River EP out Friday 14 February through I OH YOU Available to pre-order here Stranger Heart EP tracklisting: 1. It is with great delight that I OH YOU share ‘Dark Star’, a cutting single about the murky depths of infatuation and the final track to drop from Jack River’s forthcoming Stranger Heart EP ahead of its release on Valentine’s Day (Fri 14 Feb).

Credit: Charlotte Patmore King Krule today announces the release of his forthcoming album Man Alive! with his first ever self-directed video. Following on from last year’s ‘Hey World!’ video in which Archy Marshall performed acoustic versions of four new songs, Man Alive! (set for release on 21 February 2020) will be the third King Krule titled studio album. Archy Marshall’s long-time love of cinema seeps out in his first foray into directing, with a video for ‘(Don’t Let The Dragon) Draag On’ that pulls influences from Carl Theodor Dreyer’s classic The Passion of Joan of Arc while still creating a typically wry King Krule visual. Presave / Pre-order Man Alive! https://kingkrule.ffm.to/manalive Archy Ivan Marshall has the world at his feet. After two feverishly received albums as King Krule, plus another low-key outing under his own name, this extraordinarily gifted 25-year-old from Peckham in South London adds further depth and substance to his oeuvre with another wondrous long-player called Man Alive!. It arrives packed full of his trademark sonic ambition and compositional skill, as well as the now-familiar corrosive lyricism and lurid social observation. Marshall has emerged as a pack leader amongst his peers, leading the charge in a fearless blurring of genre divisions, one minute seeming to drag the listener through the trashiest punk experience, the next ushering in a soundworld that’s apparently hi-tech and forward-looking. Like any great artist on the rise, Archy’s life is moving fast. There’s a lot to catch up on, after 2017’s sprawling masterpiece, The Ooz, broke through amid Mercury Prize nominations and minds-blown media plaudits. Unlike that record, Man Alive! doesn’t aim to present any kind of narrative thread, or Brexit-era state-of-the-nation address, just a collection of snapshots and stories, artfully sequenced into a dazzlingly coherent whole. This third King Krule album was written as a direct reaction to the non-stop energy of touring The Ooz, and then partly recorded at Shrunken Heads in Marshall’s native stamping ground of Nunhead, with ‘Ooz’ co-producer Dilip Harris. Midway through those sessions, however, Archy found out he was going to become a dad for the first time, and he decided to move up to the North West to be near the mother’s family, ready for the baby’s arrival. “I should’ve had it all wrapped up before my daughter was born,” says Marshall today with a sheepish grin. Impending parenthood came at a felicitous moment for him, as he was beginning to feel trapped in South London’s suburban lifestyle of all-eclipsing drunkenness and depression, which existing fans will know was a recurring theme in his earlier music. “It was just the easiness of it,” he reflects today. “There really is nothing else to do here, especially when it turns to winter. Everyone I know has jobs, whereas I’d sit on my arse all day sometimes not doing anything, then I’d go to the pub with them when they finished work. It became a bit habitual. Then, right in the middle of the record, this big change came in my life that I didn't really comprehend initially. It was like, ‘Oh, I’d better get my shit together!’ To be honest, I was really glad to get away from all that so I could focus on more pressing matters – like keeping a child alive and stuff.” The new album’s title, he explains, “is an exclamation, about the times we live in. Like, ‘Fucking hell, man!’” He stole the title from a CD that his uncle gave him back in 2013 with some of his uncle’s own music on it, and originally planned to use it for his last album. “More and more,” he explains, “I've been put off by the intention of speaking about what's going on in society as a black-and-white thing, or trying to get to the bottom of why we’re in this position. So the album is mostly made up of snapshots and observations. There are a lot of real-time-and-place moments, songs talking about walking through the park just over there and getting a head injury [don’t ask! – Ed.], then there are other tracks which are just simplicity, looking at one particular situation and reflecting on it as somehow being super-profound.” Just as the lyrics are diverse in theme and purpose, so is the music: ‘Comet Face’ lopes along with irresistible unease like a wonky New Wave hit, and ‘Stoned Again’ packs all the inspired beatmongery of ’90s hip hop, while much of the record’s sparser second half recalls the lo-fi intimacy of Robert Wyatt’s ’80s solo work, or indeed the recordings of mass-murderer Charles Manson. As the concluding ‘Please Complete Thee’ sails out on upliftingly twangsome slide guitar, you’d be forgiven for imagining that some of the more agonizing preceding numbers have served as a kind of therapy for their creator. “Oh yeah,” he freely admits, “once you’re able to discuss things and talk honestly, there is no better way than just shouting it out at a bunch of people. I was always empowered by lyricism and getting my aggression out in some way, or any kind of emotion. That has always been a process for me. This time I felt like I had gotten out of a dark place, and I was on a high. I appreciated the depression, and the low times I’d been through, but I also liked how I felt better in the here and now. So it was about reaching that new plateau.” King Krule - Man Alive! 1. Cellular 2. Supermarché 3. Stoned Again 4. Comet Face 5. The Dream 6. Perfecto Miserable 7. Alone, Omen 3 8. Slinky 9.

Then, right in the middle of the record, this big change came in my life that I didn’t really comprehend initially. It was like, ‘Oh, I’d better get my shit together!’ To be honest, I was really glad to get away from all that so I could focus on more pressing matters – like keeping a child alive and stuff.”

The new album’s title, he explains, “is an exclamation, about the times we live in. Like, ‘Fucking hell, man!’” He stole the title from a CD that his uncle gave him back in 2013 with some of his uncle’s own music on it, and originally planned to use it for his last album.

“More and more,” he explains, “I’ve been put off by the intention of speaking about what’s going on in society as a black-and-white thing, or trying to get to the bottom of why we’re in this position. So the album is mostly made up of snapshots and observations. There are a lot of real-time-and-place moments, songs talking about walking through the park just over there and getting a head injury [don’t ask! – Ed.], then there are other tracks which are just simplicity, looking at one particular situation and reflecting on it as somehow being super-profound.”

Just as the lyrics are diverse in theme and purpose, so is the music: ‘Comet Face’ lopes along with irresistible unease like a wonky New Wave hit, and ‘Stoned Again’ packs all the inspired beatmongery of ’90s hip hop, while much of the record’s sparser second half recalls the lo-fi intimacy of Robert Wyatt’s ’80s solo work, or indeed the recordings of mass-murderer Charles Manson.

So it was about reaching that new plateau.”
