HEY SMITH (JAPAN)ANNOUNCE DEBUT AUSTRALIAN

AND THE RESIGNATORS

Japanese punk/ska band HEY SMITH announce their debut Australian headline tour with specials guests, California punk/ska legends Voodoo Glow Skulls and Australia’s own fine purveyors of the genre The Resignators. The tour kicks off in Adelaide on November 27, heading up the east coast of Australia then culminating at the Ska Nation Festival in Colac on November 30. Full tour details below.

HEY SMITH hail from Osaka, Japan. Formed in 2006, the origin of the band name is, “SMITH” is taken from the initials of each member, and “HEY” just sounds like we’re in a good mood!

HEY SMITH incorporate horns into their upbeat, catchy melodic punk rock, a true live band who performs around 150 shows annually in Japan. The band host their own outdoor festival OSAKA HAZIKETEMAZARE FESTIVAL in Osaka every year. This band is not to be missed live!

Voodoo Glow Skulls were formed in 1988 by Eddie Casillas, Jorge Casillas, Jerry O’neill and Frank Casillas. After a few years of backyard party shows, cassette demos, 7” singles and first club gigs, they released their debut album “Who is, this is?” for Dr. Strange records in 1993, gaining the attention of Brett Gurewitz, owner of Epitaph records. The band then signed to Epitaph records and released four albums, starting in 1995 with “Firme”, their most successful album to date, then followed by “Baile de los Locos”, “Band Geek Mafia” and “Symbolic”.

The band began to tour worldwide with their first European tour in 1996 followed by Japan, Australia, Mexico, and South America. The band has been featured on several of Epitaph’s Punk-O-Rama releases and has had music featured in video games, TV and movies.

The song “Shoot the Moon” from the band’s Firme album was used in the Pauly Shoremovie Bio-Dome and the band’s version of “Used to Love Her” (originally written and recorded by Guns N’ Roses) is featured in the Mr. & Mrs. Smith soundtrack.

In 2002, Voodoo Glow Skulls signed to Victory Records. The band released three albums on the Victory label and continued to tour. In June, 2017, Frank Casillas announced his retirement from the band and was replaced by Death By Stereo vocalist Efrem Schulz.

The Resignators‘ journey is one of resilience, creativity, and a commitment to their musical vision. With a dedicated fan base, a solid discography, and an unwavering passion for their craft, The Resignators remain an essential part of Australia’s diverse musical landscape. As they continue to evolve and inspire, their music serves as a testament to the enduring power of ska-punk fusion.

Hey Smith!’s 10 Japanese Bands You Need To Know Right Now

  1. SiM

Favorite song: Blah Blah Blah

They are a band that draws on various genres including punk, reggae, and loud rock. They are the band we are closest with personally, and while musically they are fantastic, they are also very serious people with deep thoughts.

  1. coldrain

Favorite song: No Escape

Here’s yet another of the bands in Japan that we are closest with. (laughs) Their most distinctive feature is their intense twin guitars. They’re truly technical, but they also have pop elements that are easy to remember once you hear them. I actually can’tplay it myself. (laughs)

  1. SHANK

Here’s yet another of the bands in Japan that we are closest with. (laughs)

They are a three-piece melodic and ska band. They broadcast their unique culture from Nagasaki, a rural part of Japan, and now they are a special band that everyone in Japan knows.

  1. crossfaith

Here’s yet another of the bands in Japan that we are closest with. (laughs)

I’ll end this catchphrase here as it seems it could go on forever. (laughs)

Once you see their live performance, it will be etched in your brain forever. They’re from Osaka Prefecture like us, and they’re the friends we meet most often in private.

  1. Hi-STANDARD

They’re my favorite band. Countless Japanese bands have been influenced by them, not just us. Their melodies and guitar solos are unforgettable once you hear them. Even now, I think no punk band in Japan has surpassed them yet.

  1. SHADOWS

They’re on the same label as us. We really respect their attitude towards music. Their music is incredibly complex yet still pop. And they’re wonderful people. They never forget their respect for others, and all Japanese punk bands like them.

  1. GUMX

A band composed of two Japanese and one Korean member. The guitar vocalist, Yongwon, is my best friend. He came to Japan alone from Korea to play his music, which I respect immensely. He has a strong respect for the Japanese punk scene, and his respect for that scene is very cool.

  1. ENTH

They’re a band broadcasting various cultures from Nagoya, Japan. Sometimes they send out messages that are incomprehensible to others, dangerous, and playful. Currently, culture from Nagoya is growing big in Japan, and they are undoubtedly at the center of it.

  1. CRYSTAL LAKE

YD, the guitarist, is the closest guitarist to me geographically. (laughs) He lives about 5 minutes away, and we contact each other when something happens. Their live energy is off the charts, and they drink an incredible amount of alcohol before and after their performances.

  1. Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra

They are our biggest mentors and also our biggest supporters. We do a co-headlining tour once a year with them. The time spent with them, who tour around the world, is special, and I think they are one of the few mentors who truly understandsHEY-SMITH.

I’ve listed 10 bands. They all ended up being friends. (laughs) There are still many more wonderful bands in Japan. Once a year, I hold a festival called “HAZIKETEMAZARE FESTIVAL” in my hometown Osaka to gather my friends, so come and visit from Australia too!

Meadow 10: Hiatus Kaiyote & Pond To Headline The Last Meadow Festival
+ Announcing ‘The Retreat Creek Hotel’ offering 10 slots for local artists

by the partae November 27, 2024
written by the partae

Location – Bambra

Dates – March 21-23, 2025

Immerse yourself in music, nature, and community one final time at the Bambra Bowl this coming Autumn for Meadow’s last installment; a three-day two-night full-circle lap around the contemporary genre-sphere in Bambra on Gulidjan, Gadubanud and Wadawurrung land. After announcing American songwriter and multi-instrumentalist MJ Lenderman & The Wind, the Meadow crew welcome headliners Hiatus Kaiyote and Pond, and a full line-up including Empress Of (US), Kaiit, Floodlights, and many many more.

The 2025 lineup boasts internationally renowned neo-soul favourites Hiatus Kaiyote stopping off in Bambra, Boorloo psychedelic rock staples Pond who will headline Meadow’s last Saturday night and an appearance from LA based American musician and producer Empress Of. Lovers and appreciators of local legends, the Meadow team are excited to welcome back Annie Rose Maloney who played the festival’s very first year, Geelong psychedelic heavyweights ORB, and the sound of Australia on record, Floodlights. The weekend getaway will host something for everyone, from the sweet honeyed vocals of Kaiit, to the rock bristling with fairytale warmth from Melbourne’s Eggy, or the effortless bars from First Nations hiphop artist Miles Nautu

Hiatus Kaiyote

Playing throughout the whole weekend and after the starry night takes over the Bowl, a multitude of local and international DJs and curators will be delivering their sets including multi-hyphenate Meanjin based producer Dameeeela, Detroit house music staple Marcellus Pittman, revered record collector and tastemaker Chee Shimizu from Japan, and Osmosis Jones bringing the sounds of UK Garage to command the floor on Friday night.

It doesn’t stop there, and over the weekend, Armlock, Big Yawn, Empress, Proto Moro, Pop Filter, and Npcede will also bring their local magic to the Bambra Bowl, plus announcing the ‘The Retreat Creek Hotel’ an opportunity for rural artists to apply to perform at the 2025 Festival with applications opening on the Meadow website on Wednesday 11 December.

Empress Of (US)

The Retreat Creek Hotel will cleverly capitalise upon the gathering of locals that annually congregate in front of the festival bar at Meadow; taking a demand for more performance spaces for regional musicians and offering a platform solely showcasing talent from rural areas surrounding the festival. Named after the waterway that winds through the valley below the event, the new stage adjacent to the bar is an opportunity for 10 local acts to perform in the pre-existing nurturing festival environment including offering one lucky act a feature spot on the main stage as part of the “Retreat Creek Hotel Presents” program.

Every vehicle attending the festival will require a car pass. All proceeds support replanting native trees and shrubs across the festival site and surrounding areas (via East Otway Landcare). Hundreds of baby trees from past plantings will be starting to mature by the time punters arrive in Autumn!

The “Bambra Express” bus passes are available for the 2025 event. A $62 + BF return pass will get you from Melbourne Southern Cross Station to Bambra and back again.

General Release tickets are now on sale for $298+ BF, teenagers accompanied by adults can join the festivities but require a full ticket, while children under 12 enter for free.

Whether you’re getting your blanket ready to park on the hill and enjoy the serene sundown, or packing your dancing shoes one final time, don’t miss the opportunity to experience this last all-mighty party in the Bambra Hills.

FALLING IN REVERSE ANNOUNCES THE “POPULAR MONS(TOUR) AUSTRALIA 2025

by the partae November 27, 2024
written by the partae

FALLING IN REVERSE ANNOUNCES
“POPULAR MONS(TOUR) AUSTRALIA 2025”

WITH SPECIAL GUESTS BLACK VEIL BRIDES & HOLLYWOOD UNDEAD

FALLING IN REVERSE announce the POPULAR MONS(TOUR) AUSTRALIA 2025. Kicking off at RAC Arena in Perth, the band will then head to Adelaide Entertainment Centre, Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne, Qudos Bank Arena in Sydney, finishing off at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre.

The tour will see the band playing their biggest headline shows in Australia to date. Special guests on the tour are BLACK VEILK BRIDES and HOLLYWOOD UNDEAD. Full tour details below.

FALLING IN REVERSE return with 2024’s Popular Monster, the postmodern trailblazer’s first full-length in seven years. The album arrives armed with no less than three RIAA-certified gold singles (“ZOMBIFIED,” “Voices in My Head,” “Watch the World Burn”), the certified ARIA triple platinum title track, a reimagined nü-metal classic, and six brand new anthems of furious metal, melody, and hip-hop.

Popular Monster is a defiant statement and triumphant victory for singer, songwriter, bandleader, and provocateur Ronnie Radke, who invented FALLING IN REVERSE inside a prison cell.

“Radke stands as one of this generation’s most revered rock frontmen,” wrote the esteemed Forbes Magazine in a 2020 profile. “And maybe even one of the scene’s last true rockstars.”

FALLING IN REVERSE’s catalogue has accrued over 6 billion streams. The catalogue streaming remains robust at 45 million per week. Over on TikTok, the band has a stronghold, with 6 billion video views, with 4.5 million creations and an 1.8 billion creator reach.

FALLING IN REVERSE have sold out arenas globally in the USA, Europe and the UK. Make no mistake, the POPULAR MONS(TOUR) AUSTRALIA will definitely follow suit.

The numbers don’t lie — FALLING IN REVERSE are the rock scene’s biggest sensation.

It’s hard to imagine in 2024, after BLACK VEIL BRIDES most recent album produced their highest-charting single in the U.S, and legions of supporters passionately scream their devotion during every performance. But before the birth of the BVB Army, the thousands of lyric tattoos, and the gold and platinum records that followed, BLACK VEIL BRIDES was simply a dark vision dreamt up by an only child in Cincinnati, Ohio.

BLACK VEIL BRIDES new single Bleeders offers a taste of what will become Black Veil Brides’ most visceral, theatrical, and unrelenting era yet. They combine a unique identity with an unquenchable creative thirst. They’re an object of devotion for those who sing their anthems in unison, a diverse BVB Army who never surrenders.

BLACK VEIL BRIDES and their audience slash away at the darkness together, bleeders one and all.

Since the release of HOLLYWOOD UNDEAD’s RIAA platinum-certified 2008 debut album, Swan Songs, their distinctive and infectious music has incited a cult audience of millions of fans, resulting in sold out shows across the globe, in addition to receiving nods in the press from the likes of Consequence of Sound, Billboard, Alternative Press, Rolling Stone, and Revolver. The quintet has also garnered massive mainstream appeal, with their 2011 sophomore record, American Tragedy, going gold and hitting #4 on the Billboard Top 200 chart. Now, with over 3.1 billion cross-platform streams, 1 billion YouTube views and 4.1 million monthly Spotify listeners, they have firmly cemented their place as one of the most influential bands of the 21st century. Now signed to Sumerian Records, and with the release of their brand new single, ‘Hollywood Forever’, HOLLYWOOD UNDEAD are poised for their most exciting chapter yet.

Get In Quick.

The Offspring: SUPERCHARGED Worldwide In ’25 Australia With Simple Plan

by the partae November 27, 2024
written by the partae

Once was not enough for punk rock icons THE OFFSPRING! Fresh off the release of their brand new album SUPERCHARGED and their earth-shattering one-off performance in Melbourne last night, the legendary five-piece have officially supercharged their 2025 plans, today announcing their return down under next May for the The Offspring: SUPERCHARGED Worldwide in ’25 Australia tour with SIMPLE PLAN.

A jam-packed arena spectacular from two of the greats, with both THE OFFSPRING and SIMPLE PLAN set to unleash a mountain of hits from across their storied catalogues! The Offspring: SUPERCHARGED Worldwide in ’25 Aussie tour will kick off on Sunday 4 May in Adelaide, heading onto Melbourne and Sydney, and closing out on Wednesday 14 May in Brisbane.

Forming in the mid-80s in Garden Grove, California, THE OFFSPRING ultimately became a cultural juggernaut; a band acknowledged as one of the driving forces behind catapulting punk rock into the mainstream in the 1990s, and also regarded as one of the best-selling acts of all time. From their 1989 self-titled debut album which set the scene for the group’s high-octane wiles and infectious melodies, THE OFFSPRING have since unveiled eleven studio albums, with multiple platinum certifications along the way. The band have repeatedly burned up airwaves across the globe while selling over 40 millions records worldwide and are two time members of the Spotify Billions Club (You’re Gonna Go Far Kid / The Kids Aren’t Alright).

A creative tornado of relentless fun and inventive takes on hardcore, skate and pop punk in their broader punk stratosphere, THE OFFSPRING‘s ability to translate their frenetic energy into a live setting is second to none. Boasting an abundance of hits and deeper fan-favourite cuts throughout their catalogue, spanning the sharpened angst of The Kids Aren’t Alright, the fast-paced and uplifting You’re Gonna Go Far, Kid, the anthemic rawness of Self Esteem or, more recently, the frenetic spark of tracks like Light It Up and Make It All Right, THE OFFSPRING remain at the top of their game decades later, colliding the past, present and future of punk rock into a palatable, memorable and insanely enjoyable adventure that shows zero signs of slowing down.

Between selling over 10 million albums worldwide, taking out multiple awards, dominating MTV in its golden era and also recently spawning their own TikTok viral challenge, multi-platinum Canadian rockers SIMPLE PLAN have remained an indelible part of pop culture for over two decades. Forming in Montreal in 1999, SIMPLE PLAN have retained a rare artist-audience dynamic that has only strengthened over time, with the band also actively releasing new music throughout their 20+ years in existence.

From their debut 2002 full-length, No Pads, No Helmets…Just Balls through to their most recent record, the self-released 2022 album Harder Than It Looks, SIMPLE PLAN‘s legacy continues to affirm as does their show-stopping live performances which has seen them tick off festival sets across the globe, tours with Blink-182, Green Day and Avril Lavigne, and, most recently down under, an entirely sold out eight show run in April that squarely brought the house down night after night with endless energy and good vibes.

With THE OFFSPRING‘s ALWAYS Live intimate one-night-only show in Melbourne selling out in 30 seconds, and SIMPLE PLAN‘s Australian headline run earlier this year entirely sold out, tickets definitely won’t last long for The Offspring: SUPERCHARGED Worldwide in ’25 edition down under. Don’t miss your chance to Come Out and Play in 2025 with these two rock titans under one roof; Supercharge your 2025!

KYARA Releases Dystopian Synthwave Pop Anthem ‘Into The Dark’

by the partae November 26, 2024
written by the partae

Sydney/Eora’s emerging voice in electro pop, KYARA, is set to enrapture listeners with her latest self written, recorded and produced single, ‘Into The Dark’, a synthwave pop anthem that plunges into a dystopian, cinematic soundscape.

With its pulsating bassline, lush vocals, shimmering synths, and vibrant saxophone, KYARA’s sophomore single offers an immersive auditory experience reminiscent of the iconic sounds of ‘Stranger Things’. The track evokes the sensation of descending into a shadowy, futuristic abyss, capturing the essence of heartbreak while reflecting on the pervasive fear of abandonment and the daunting prospect of facing the unknown alone.

KYARA discusses the story behind ‘Into The Dark’:

“‘Into The Dark’ dives deep into the emotional labyrinth of rejection and abandonment in modern relationships and situationships, channelling a dark, end-of-the-world vibe that echoes the intense feelings of betrayal and isolation. The song’s narrative explores the shattering of promises and the haunting realisation of their emptiness.”

The new single, which follows KYARA’s strong debut in the pop scene, showcases her signature ability to fuse powerful electronic elements with deeply resonant lyrical themes. The sonic journey of ‘Into The Dark’ echoes the profound vulnerabilities of the human experience, dellving into the emotional void that follows sudden abandonment and upheaval of trust, leading to an overwhelming sense of being left adrift in a void.

‘Into The Dark’ is available on all major streaming platforms now

INTERVIEW: KYBBA on ‘Ba Ba Bad’ Sean Paul, Busy Signal Collab

by the partae November 23, 2024
written by the partae

“Ba Ba Bad” has already captured global attention—can you walk us through how the track came to life and how Sean Paul and Busy Signal got involved?

The song started first with Busy Signal, he was in the studio with Crawba, they called me and asked for beats, the next morning I received the full vocal already, so I pieced it out and made a first demo. During one of my events in Amsterdam I just played the demo and the crowd reaction was insane, so the following day I uploaded the night footage and the track went immediately viral on both tt and ig. Then Leftside sent the track to Sean Paul and he loved it, so he dropped a verse and in literally a couple of days we released the track.

With the song initially going viral on social media, how did platforms like TikTok influence your decision to expand the track into this powerhouse collaboration?

It was just natural cause Leftside was trying to link me with Sean Paul for some months now, to do a collaboration between me and him, so I felt this was the right moment and the right song.

What was the most exciting or unexpected moment during the creation of “Ba Ba Bad,” especially working with legends like Sean Paul and Busy Signal?

I think the days I received both vocals, I felt the energy and it was special because both artists loved the project so much.

Dancehall has such a rich cultural history—how do you ensure your production stays authentic while bringing your own signature style to the genre?

I grew up listening to Reggae and Dancehall, I’ll always respect the originators and the Jamaican culture in general, that’s why I make sure in most of my tracks to feature Jamaican artists, and to collaborate with Jamaican producers too. My first song ever was with Leftside, who is one of my favourite Jamaican Dancehall artists and now also a good friend. I want to remark that my sound contains a lot of elements also from Shatta, which is a dancehall sub genre from Martinique, and Moombahton. The Basshall signature is a mix of all these sounds.

Your unique blend of Dancehall, Latin, and urban sounds has resonated globally. What inspires you to explore and merge such diverse influences in your music?

I think because I was first a DJ and then I started producing, and especially in my first days as a DJ I always loved to mix different genres and sounds, so my sets were definitely unique in that sense from the start. I basically translated my djing style into my record label sound signature and production style. I definitely have many inspirations from different genres and cultures, three of my fav artists/producers are Vybz Kartel, Manu Chao and Diplo, all of them versatile and unique in their own way.

Having already amassed over 100 million streams in your career, how do you approach creating music that connects so strongly with both core fans and new listeners worldwide?

I genuinely don’t know, I do not strategise a lot when it comes to my music creation, I just work on things that I like, then I hope my core fans as well as the new listeners will like it.

The Basshall Movement is a game-changer in the industry. How does being at the helm of a label, TV channel, and event brand impact your work as an artist and producer?

Well I like it but sometimes it is overwhelming, I’m not really good at delegating but I’m learning it and my team and management are helping.

What does it mean to you personally and professionally to have Sean Paul describe your production as ‘wicked’ and feel compelled to jump on the track?

Is like a dream come true, I grew up listening to his music so having my name next to his on a release it’s a huge achievement.

With appearances at festivals like Tomorrowland, how do you prepare to translate your studio sound into a live performance that captivates massive audiences?

I try to imagine myself in the crowd. So obviously a set I play in a club/boiler room type of set up will always be different than a big stage like Tomorrowland etc. I always stay true to my sound but I definitely shape my set differently when it comes to big stages.

What’s next for KYBBA? Are there any upcoming projects, collaborations, or surprises in the pipeline that you can share with your fans?

I’m working on my first EP, I have many collaborations I’m working on, one is with the legend Buju Banton. There are many other projects but I can’t share any details atm. I’ll also announce a world tour in the next few months!!

Twine share final tease of New Old Horse LP (Dec 6) with ‘Fruit to Ripe’

by the partae November 22, 2024
written by the partae

“Though there are only five members in their ranks, together Twine conjure up a mighty racket, with violinist Thea Martin adding additional layers to the rest of their bandmates’ boisterous and clattering.” – David Renshaw, The Fader

“A powerhouse example of the stellar music made in the South Australian capital.”
– Tyler Jenke, Rolling Stone Australia

“Twine are making music as cinematic as it is volatile, capturing a set of caustic feelings that always seem to erupt.”

– Dan Goldin, POST-TRASH

“Effortlessly cool.”

– Danika Baker, Tone Deaf

“A compelling and explosive live show – tight, angular, post-hardcore that occasionally teeters into moments of explosive noise.”

– FBi Radio

[Friday, November 22] Twine – one of Australia’s leading noise acts – uncover a final preview of their debut LP New Old Horse (out Friday, December 6 via Kitty Records) with new single ‘Fruit to Ripe’, alongside a Conor Mercury-directed music video. Listen to ‘Fruit to Ripe’ HERE. Pre-order New Old Horse HERE.

The discord between erotic charge and sexual anxiety is the subject of ‘Fruit to Ripe’, an unrelenting freak-out of roared vocals and manic instrumentation, recalling the noisier output of The Drones.

The accompanying music video, directed by Conor Mercury (Coldwave, The Empty Threats), captures the intensity of Twine’s electrifying live performances through a single-take clip that constantly shifts perspectives. Mercury shares, “The live energy of Twine is one that I’ve always experienced to be impassioned, uninhibited, and for real. I really wanted to shoot a traditional performance music video in a way that captured [Twine’s] nature of spontaneity.”

He continues, “I had always wanted to shoot a clip where the lens is changed without cutting, and thought it would be cooler to take that concept to the north degree, changing it as many times as possible in a single take.” To bring this idea to life, Mercury utilised a rotating perspex rig designed by Fletcher Whitehead, who also shot the video. The rig was equipped with various diopters—including classic diopters, a split diopter, a mirror, and a small DVCam mounted upside down—that Mercury operated remotely, while a focus puller managed a prime lens positioned behind them.

‘Fruit to Ripe’ joins New Old Horse singles ‘Sleeping Dogs’, ‘Same Old Problems’, ‘Future Exhale’ and ‘My God’, which found praise and plays from Apple Music’s Matt Wilkinson, The Fader, POST-TRASH, Rolling Stone, triple j and community radio across Australia, including PBS, 4ZZZ, RTR, 2SER, Triple R and fbi.radio (landing the station’s Independent Artist Of The Week earlier this year), with debuts on New Zealand’s Alt Airplay Charts).

Twine ‘Fruit to Ripe’ Music Video by Conor Mercury | Watch HERE

The two threads that twist together to make South Australian band Twine are barrelling noise rock and wounded, stinging country.  Their debut record New Old Horse is dazzling and devastating in equal measure; a tender yet eruptive exploration of wayward relationships and the aches of identity in flux. The dynamism of the album mirrors these disordered attachments and emotions — tracks of brute force quickly descend into mournful interludes from the violin, while slow tracks sprawl out and then explode into a pummel of noise and drums. Tom Katsaras’ unpolished vocals quiver and howl, giving each song a sorrowful depth.

The band began in Kaurna land/Adelaide in 2021, initially as a solo vehicle for Katasaras’ experiments into brash, country-inflected rock. But as the band members shifted and finally solidified into their current line-up — Tom Katsaras (Vocals / Guitar),  Matt Schultz (Guitar), Thea Martin (Violin), Alicia Salvanos (Bass) and Jackson Pagett (Drums) — the music became more of a collective effort, with Katsaras bringing his bandmates small fragments of songs that were then expanded and warped into new shapes. Part of the unruly power of New Old Horse (Mixed by Alex Farrar, who has worked with MJ Lenderman and Wednesday) comes from this communal approach.

Drawing inspiration from current contemporaries such as Wednesday, Sprain and Chat Pile as well as heritage acts like The Dirty Three, The Drones and Unwound (who handpicked the group to support them on their Australian tour earlier this month), the group pay homage to their influences with originality and earnestness.

New Old Horse comes off the back of the band’s reputation for bracing live shows. After an array of east coast tours supporting fellow Australian acts like Bad//Dreems, Dust, Mini Skirt, The Belair Lip Bombs, Grace Cummings, Armlock and VOIID, plus post-rock veterans Mclusky, Twine headed to Aotearoa/New Zealand for their first international tour, including a stop at Camp A Low Hum festival (Wednesday, Holy Fuck). The band continue to laud significant buzz across fans and media alike, performing to overflowing rooms for their SXSW Sydney debut, and across their ‘Sleeping Dogs’ east coast tour last month.

LANY Lights Up Hordern Pavilion with Unforgettable Show and Emotional Highs

LANY transformed Sydney’s Hordern Pavilion into a haven of dreamy pop beats and heartfelt connections. The setlist, a rollercoaster of emotions, delivered everything fans have come to love about the trio: vulnerability, energy, and a sense of community.

The night opened with the fan-favorite “YOU!”, sparking immediate energy across the venue as Paul Klein and the band emerged from behind white curtains and 007 like spotlights, setting the stage for what felt like therapy on a Wednesday night. This show, part of their long-awaited tour, had been delayed due to Klein’s recent motorcycle accident, adding a layer of poignancy to their return to the stage since their last tour in Sydney in 2022. The crowd was in sync with every beat, and from there, LANY didn’t let up. “ex i never had” and “up to me”brought a mix of nostalgia and fresh energy that’s quintessential to LANY’s style. The wistful “It Even Rains in LA” and the introspective “I Pray” showcased lead singer Paul Klein’s emotional range, leaving fans hanging on every lyric.

In a particularly memorable moment, the band segued into “somewhere / Sugar & Cinnamon”, drawing fans deeper into the introspective core of their music before jumping into fan favorite “care less” from their 2021 album, gg bb xx. Klein’s raw vocal delivery paired with airy melodies set the stage for heartbreak anthems like “Congrats” and the soul-baring “I Don’t Wanna Love You Anymore” making everyone including me grove.

As the setlist progressed, LANY continued to guide the crowd through highs and lows, balancing upbeat anthems with reflective ballads. “dancing in the kitchen”sparked joy and movement, while “pink skies” added a magical atmosphere—complete with a surprise proposal. As the intro to this 2016 hit played, Klein invited a fan on stage with his partner where he got down on one knee, prompting cheers from the sold-out crowd at Hordern.

LANY kept the mellow vibe going with “Alonica”, “Thick and Thin”, and “Out of My League”, while “dna”resonated with deeper emotional undertones. The back-to-back performance of “Super Far / Mean It” brought a jolt of excitement, leading into Klein’s acoustic rendition of “13”, a moment fans had eagerly anticipated. The melodic, minor-key rendition of “Hericane” filled the room with raw emotion, even if played only partially, before the band transitioned seamlessly into “’Cause You Have To”.

The evening’s came with the trio’s powerful nostalgic fan favourite off their 2019 album “Thru These Tears” and “Malibu Nights”, both delivering the full scope of LANY’s signature sound: bittersweet lyrics and lush instrumentals that tug at the heartstrings which are suitable for those are in love or are heartbroken. For the encore, “ILYSB” brought the crowd to a fever pitch, with every word shouted back in a unified, emotional wave. Finally, they closed with the powerful “XXL”, a fitting end to a night that felt larger than life, with Klein diving into the crowd multiple times before the band bid farewell to Hordern in true Lonely Tunes style.

The crowd at Hordern Pavilion was left buzzing, carried by LANY’s effortless transitions between joy and heartache. The show was a reminder of how the band continues to build genuine connections with fans through their music and presence. Every track on the setlist was a perfect piece in the tapestry of an unforgettable evening, proving once again that LANY is more than a band—they’re a shared experience.

JET CITY SPORTS CLUB reveal bright new single ‘MINI SKIRT’

by the partae November 21, 2024
written by the partae

With soaring melodies and emotive lyrics, Sydney indie-rock group JET CITY SPORTS CLUB are back with a brand new single titled ‘MINI SKIRT’.

The band’s latest release is a strong addition to a catalogue that has included the Every Single Dream EP; a career defining moment for Jet City Sports Club, continuing to build upon the momentum the last few years have generated. As one of the East Coast’s exciting fresh players, Jet City Sports Club have been working hard on creating music that focuses on the vision they have for their music moving into a brand new year.

With a song like ‘Mini Skirt’, the band is taking strong steps into this new direction.

Recorded with Fletcher Matthews (Trophy Eyes, Dear Seattle, Stumps) at his studio in Glebe, Jet City Sports Club pulled influences from artists they love, including The Cure, Holly Humberstone and The Beaches, while pushing their honest brand of storytelling and delivery further than they had on previous releases.

Of the song, the band describes ‘Mini Skirt’ as being about “growing up” and realising there isn’t necessarily one right way to do things or move through life.

“…you don’t have to be perfect or conform to the ways your friends, family or the world might want you to. The story is narrated from the perspective of a young girl going through serious body image issues and pressure to be someone they might not necessarily be. The verses talk about this and the chorus aims to reclaim a sense of independence and self worth.”
JET CITY SPORTS CLUB

The vibrancy and confidence heard on this music matches the energy Jet City Sports Club have taken into their live performances in recent years as well. Since their debut in 2021, the group has gone from strength to strength, touring with artists including Ruby Fields, Old Mervs, Dear Seattle and more; while also performing sets at Lost Paradise and the Mountain Goat Valley Crawl and with upcoming summer spots at Rolling Sets and Party In The Paddock.

Extensive support via Triple J, Triple J Unearthed and community radio, as well as DSPs (Spotify’s Fuzzy, Fresh Finds; Apple Music’s NMD, Good Times, New Indie, Pop Chill and more), have established Jet City Sports Club as an Australian indie group to watch. With each release the band steps up to the plate and proves all of this and more.

PRAISE

“A glimmering shard of sunshine through heavy curtains, ‘She Don’t Need No One’ contains many small moments of poetic romance: a seat belt tan line from driving topless in the sun; a momentary crush spawned from the brief touch of an arm; a city not feeling the same any more, despite a 40C day…”
THE GUARDIAN

“Holy s**t. Absolutely loving this sound, that build is so satisfying. Great vocals, great guitar, great journey you take us on.”
TRIPLE J, JESS PERKINS

“The kinda song to put a sweet little smile on your face. Love all the textures, it feels calming even when the guitar kicks in. Just gorgeous!”
TRIPLE J CLAIRE MOONEY

Summer 2024/25 is looking to be a busy one for the band, as they prepare to hit the road supporting both Annie Hamilton and Eliza and the Delusionals as well as playing Rolling Sets and Party In The Paddock from December through to February.

REVIEW: Tate McRae – 12 Nov 2024, Hordern Pavilion, Sydney

THE GREAT POP REVIVAL

Static sounds and flickering lights… the screen teased retro super film as the subs began to tease the heart… a voice over transported us into a special place… the Hordern was ready… ready to witness something magical… an eagerness somewhat like when man walked on the moon filled the room… and there she was… the twenty one year old icon… taking her rightful place as the future of pop… taking us to brand new, magical places.

She doesn’t just have a fantastic vocal range or songs that have become the anthems of millions of her fans lives. Tate McRae brings everything pop is onto one stage. The dancers, the sas, the sexy, the songs, the stage design… she has created her own little world and invited us along for the ride and it is no accident. We owe it to the sacrifice she made being placed in the spotlight at 13, a sacrifice that has equip her with a wealth of knowledge throughout all fascists of the industry to add spice where it is needed, write songs with depth, ensure her people are loved with rooftop pop ups and collude dance, lights and ballads to strike the hearts of anyone who found themselves in the Hordern Pavilion at 9pm on a Tuesday night.

Tate showed off her spectacular taste having Seattle born Charlieonnafriday open the night with a wonderful little set full of his hit singles such as Enough, I’m not crazy and After Hours as well showing of pieces of his new album WILD CHILD with tracks such as When it Rains filling the room with pure joy. His eclectic sound that merges pop, country tones and a mellow hip hop forces heads to nod and the hips to sway. The perfect to vibe to warm up the Mcrazies for the main event.

Opening with the heaving hitting Think later had the sea of Jerseys, high ponies and stuffed teddies going word for word alongside her from the get go. With vibrant dance breaks and guitar solos she and her team brought their A-game showing of her latest Album THINK LATER in all of the awe inspiring ways. She also gave the day ones some love including the tracks uh oh and she’s all I wanna be as well as the song that really put her on the musical map at sixteen you broke me first. There is something quite special when someone can bring together the die hards, the fathers, the broken hearted and the joy filled to sing together under one roof tracks like exes next to guilty conscience really emphasising how different people, from different worlds can have such powerful shared experiences.

Overall, Tate was five stars, she inspired the woman to own who they are, back each other, enjoy where they are at and being a little bitter sometimes isn’t such a bad thing. She currently holds a prominent space in the pop scene and with The Kid Laroi on her arm partnered with some of lasts years biggest and best pop songs there is not much stopping her from stealing all of Australia’s hearts.
