What is your name and role within Supernova? Emiliano is a Dj,  producer and A&R, Giacomo is a Dj, Musician and producer. Where are you currently based and what is the music scene like there? We live in Florence, we have our studios and our families here in Italy. Music scene here is pretty hot, we love to play in Italy! How did you first start playing music? We both starts at 15 years old playing vinyls, drum machines and samplers at some hot parties in our cities at the end of 80s. What's been happening recently? We had a great end of 2019 / beginning of 2020 djing between Europe, Usa and Asia and releasing music on Defected, Downtown Underground and 8Bit. What influenced the sound and songwriting for your new EP? We love to mix House and Techno sometimes and we are always influenced by the old school scenes creating a new Supernova sound. That’s what we like mostly. How did you go about writing the music? Sometimes we start from a groove that we like, sometimes we work around an acappella or a sample and sometimes we have an idea in mind, like a direction or a mod we want to go. Where and when did you record/produce and who with? How did you approach the recording/production process? What programs/equipment did you use? We produced this in our recording studio in Florence. We brought here the vocalist Fay aka Medusa from London and we did a couple of days of recording vocal sessions. We recorded the vocals on some reference beats, not the track as it’s now. After a few days we did start working on this raw house beat with a techno feeling and we created the string pattern with an old school feeling. We were loving how the track was building up but we felt it was missing something. We went through the vocals recorded with Fay and felt that that the spoken one was perfect for the track. We re arranged the vocal over the track and at the end we were very happy. We produced on Ableton Live as daw, Kontakt to write the strings pattern and OB-6 for synths. What did you find most challenging and rewarding during the creation on the EP? Any upcoming gigs/tours? We wanted to create a raw beat with a techno attitude but keeping the house feeling and merge them with a classical string pattern. Unfortunately in this moment after the COVID-19 crisis all the gigs we had planned have been cancelled.. If so, where are you headed and when? What can we expect from your live show? We hope to reschedule soon gigs we had planned in London, Italy and South America for Aprile and May. Our live shows are always a surprise, we love to drive around the music and to see what the crowd need from us. It’s like a mix between a dj set and a live set. Who are you listening to at the moment? Funk, Jazz and Trap music. What do you like to do away from music? Reading, sports and to stay with our families. What's planned for 2020? We will be really focus on new Supernova music this year, we are preparing a lot of stuff for some hot labels we love and of course for Lapsus Music, Downtown Underground and Blackboard which are our labels. We are also planning to release a new album on 2020 or maybe 2021, will see. Favourite food and place to hangout? We love to have special dinner with our crew, it’s a perfect place to hangout before the party. We love our Tuscan traditional food and to try food from other countries when we travel.                                                                        Purchase: https://8bit.lnk.to/MyVision Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/supernovaitaly/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/supernovaitaly/ SoundCloud: https://soundcloud.com/supernova

Muzz is the new project of Paul Banks (singer of Interpol), Josh Kaufman (esteemed producer/multi-instrumentalist and one third of Bonny Light Horseman), and Matt Barrick (drummer of Jonathan Fire*Eater, The Walkmen, and Fleet Foxes’ touring band). Today, the trio release their first official single, the loungey and romantic ‘Broken Tambourine’, via Matador / Remote Control. Watch the accompanying visual below. ‘Broken Tambourine’ begins with sparse, floating piano by Kaufman, before surging with Banks’ rumbling vocals, Barrick’s low percussion, and a lilting clarinet, while an open door during recording brings in the surrounding nature sounds of the studio in Woodstock and augments the song’s spacious atmosphere. Written, arranged and performed by all three, it perfectly encompasses the collaborative essence of Muzz, a group with recordings dating back to 2015, but, cosmically speaking, with seeds planted long ago. So how did we get here? Why, casually, of course. Banks and Kaufman have been friends since their formative teen years, having attended high school together overseas before separately moving to New York City for further study. There, they independently crossed paths with Barrick while running in similar music circles. Some years on, they each remained in touch: Barrick drummed in Banks’ project with The RZA, Banks + Steelz, and on some of Kaufman’s production sessions; Kaufman helped on Banks’s early Julian Plenti solo endeavor; various demos were collaborated on; a studio in Philadelphia was co- bought; “what if”-s and “we should”-s were tossed about. When the opportunity to make music as a trio presented itself, the gentlemen pounced. While ‘Broken Tambourine’ is the band’s first official song for Matador, earlier this month Muzz dropped ‘Bad Feeling’ anonymously via Soundcloud. Stereogum recognized it as “a surprisingly loose and low-key indie track that piles on layers of beauty as it goes”. It chimes and slinks with a touch of panache as Barrick’s kick drum pushes the tune along and Kaufman’s Farfisa fills the space. Together, these two initial numbers from Muzz offer an early glimpse into the band’s dark and expansive sound, and genuine artistic chemistry.

MUSTAFA Shares debut single ‘Stay Alive’ Out now via Regent Park Songs

by the partae March 25, 2020
written by the partae

On 10th March 2020, ‘Stay Alive’, the debut single from the 23-year-old Muslim poet Mustafa was first released into the world. With little in the way of pre-release hype or fanfare, ‘Stay Alive’ has quickly emerged as one of the year’s defining debut releases and is a near-perfect introduction to a vital new voice in music.

Produced by Frank Dukes and James Blake, this is inner-city folk music; a song for, about and born out of the ‘hood. Mustafa was first moved to make music after he lost several close friends to gun violence. ‘Stay Alive’ is addressed to those departed friends and to his Toronto neighbourhood, Regent Park.

On the accompanying video, ‘Stay Alive’s powerful message is presented alongside emotive footage of Regent Park, Mustafa‘s native neighbourhood in downtown Toronto. The area is one of the first housing projects in North America and one of the biggest redevelopment projects on the continent. Mustafa‘s experience of seeing the blocks, community and culture that raised him to transform into something unrecognizable is a story that is playing out in neighbourhoods across the world. Watch the ‘Stay Alive’ video below.

“Mustafa’s message, of caring as an act of courage, is one that feels especially apt amid the uncertainty of today.” – The FADER

“‘Stay Alive’ is a powerful plea… I found it hard not to get choked up as images of inner-city youth and lost innocence panned across the screen.” – NPR

SPENCER. Shares new single ‘Hold It Down’

by the partae March 25, 2020

Praise for Spencer.

“This song feels like the entire autumn season and your favorite worn-in sweater all bundled together.” – Nylon on ‘2much

“A hazy, soulful, retro-meets-now song that finds the middle ground between alt-R&B and chillwave.” – Brooklyn Vegan on ‘Automatic’

“Put this on your 2 a.m. playlist” – The FADER on ‘Automatic’

“Showcasing his richly textured vocals and shot through with an intriguing sense of nostalgia.” – Pigeons & Planes

“He’s destined for big things because he moves differently.” – Lyrical Lemonade on ‘Automatic’

Today, the captivating and impassioned artist Spencer. shares his latest single ‘Hold It Down’ via 4AD / Remote Control Records. Swaying, measured beats come together with a low-key guitar that sets a tender mood. Spencer.’s dewy, sleek vocals carry along honeyed lyrics that illustrate the feeling of a first love, “This the moment that they talk about…” The 20-year-old genre-defying artist melds R&B with his velvety vocals, hip-hop in his off-kilter beats, funk in his effervescent basslines, and moody indie rock in his reverb-soaked guitar, which he writes, records and produces almost in isolation.

Hailing from Rochester, NY, Spencer. credits the city’s rich and underappreciated creative scene for fostering his growth as an artist. Dropping out of college in the summer of 2018 and relocating to Brooklyn, he gave himself a year to get his career off the ground. “My parents were understandably upset when I left school,” he says, “but I promised them I’d go back if things didn’t work out.” Less than twelve months later, he’d racked up millions of streams on Spotify with the singles ‘Want U Back’ and ‘To Be You’, garnered glowing reviews on both sides of the Atlantic, and signed a record deal. “I don’t think I’m going back,” he says with a laugh.

Artists: R3HAB & GATTÜSO Title: Creep Label: CYB3RPVNK Release date: March 20, 2020 Listen on Spotify R3HAB and GATTÜSO team up on their new collaborative version of "Creep" - a cover of one of Radiohead's most iconic tracks - redone with a vocal big-room house vibe, marking the first-ever recording for Spotify's inaugural "mint Singles" program, a companion to its flagship dance playlist, mint, and a spin-off of the popular "Spotify Singles" series. Opening with angelic vocals over a barely-there bassline, we soon discover that this track packs a punch of attitude when the breakdown dives into a bouncy, groovy soundscape intermixed with upbeat melodies. "Creep" will feel at home on the radio and during live performances, which might make it your new go-to track for any occasion. R3HAB first worked with GATTÜSO on his track "Lullaby" and most recently tapped him for a remix of "Flames," slowly integrating the emerging DJ/producer into the CYB3RPVNK family. "Creep" is out today. Over the last eight years, the Dutch/Moroccan artist Fadil El Ghoul - better known as R3HAB - has established himself as a leader at the forefront of modern electronic music. His talent has been called the "future of the craft" by the likes of Forbes and Billboard, and he's circuited the globe's best clubs and festivals, all without the backing of a formal record label. In 2017, R3HAB independently released his debut album "Trouble" through his imprint CYB3RPVNK, which amassed over a half-billion streams globally and officially placed R3HAB among electronic music's heavy hitters. He made number 14 on DJ Mag's Top 100 list in 2019, topping the charts with tracks like "Lullaby" and "Hold On Tight," while his sophomore album "The Wave," revealing more complex, emotional and experimental layers of himself, has amassed over 250 million streams on Spotify alone. In 2019 R3HAB's "All Around The World" with A Touch of Class quickly became his biggest ever record already topping 200M streams across platforms and achieving gold & platinum status in 8 countries. It was followed by "Flames," R3HAB's collaboration with ZAYN. Since his first release, "Who We Are" in summer 2018, GATTÜSO has rapidly made a name for himself in the dance music scene. He has twice charted top 10 on Billboard Dance Radio, his songs have been streamed over 70 million times on Spotify and Apple Music, and his music has been endorsed by top artists such as Tiesto, R3HAB, Galantis, Sam Feldt, Steve Aoki, and many more. GATTÜSO has released music with leading international dance labels Enhanced Music and Armada Music, R3HAB's label CYB3RPVNK, as well as through his own label, T&T Records. GATTÜSO launched into 2020 will a ton of momentum which includes his recently released remix of R3HAB, ZAYN and Jungleboi's "Flames," his single "Walk On Water featuring Kat Nestel" (the first release from a new label deal with Ultra Music) and a new live representation agreement with William Morris. Chus & Ceballos + Dario D’Attis – Heart EP

Spanish production duo, Chus & Ceballos join forces with Swiss DJ and producer, Dario D’Attis, to deliver their collaborative ‘Heart’ EP on Nic Fanciulli’s Saved Records. Having pioneered the Iberican sound, Chus & Ceballos have undisputedly earned themselves legendary status as they continue to top the charts whilst headlining shows at some the world’s most elite venues. Dario D’Attis is also highly esteemed within the Dance community with countless successful productions finding homes on reputable labels including Toolroom, Lapsus, Moon Harbour, Defected and Kittball. The ‘Heart’ EP is truly reflective of both artists’ sounds with lead track ‘Heart of Glitter’ bringing groove-laden percussion, a pulsating bassline, pumping drums, a rumbling low end and resonant vocals that will be left playing in your head for days! ‘Heart of Afrika’ rounds off the EP taking a slightly more laid-back approach with crisply mixed percussion, percolating rhythms, organic drums, snaking bass and vocal chants that ebb and flow throughout the composition. Definitely an EP that will be heard on dancefloors the world over!

M. Ward Reveals “Unreal City” Video New Track “Torch” Out Now New Album Migration Stories Out April 3rd 2020 on Anti Records

by the partae March 24, 2020
written by the partae

M. Ward has unveiled the video for his current single Unreal City. Directed by Beatrice Pegard and filmed in Paris, France, the video comes ahead of the April 3rd release of highly anticipated new album Migration Stories (Anti Records). Pegard adds, “The video is about finding joy and wonder in the most random moments and places, paying homage to Jean-Luc Godard and the New Wave.”

For Migration Stories, his tenth studio album, Ward journeyed to Quebec, Canada to work with Arcade Fire’s Tim Kingsbury, Richard Reed Parry, producer/mixer Craig Silvey (Arcade Fire, Arctic Monkeys,  Florence and the Machine) and Teddy Impakt. Together they recorded a collection of 11 songs inspired by stories of human migration. Languid, hazy and often dream-like in narrative, these songs have their origins in pictures from newspaper and television reports, stories told by friends and tales from Ward’s own family history. At Arcade Fire’s Montreal studios the assembled talents recorded what he describes as “11 largely instrumental ballads – a sci-fi fast forward to a more silent night many generations from here to a maybe-era where movement is free again.”

HALF WAIF SHARES “IN AUGUST” ANNOUNCES LIVESTREAM PERFORMANCE ON RELEASE DATE THE CARETAKER OUT THIS FRIDAY VIA ANTI- RECORDS

by the partae March 24, 2020
written by the partae

Half Waif (aka Nandi Rose) has shared “In August,” the latest from her anticipated new album The Caretaker, out this Friday, March 27th via Anti Records.

Listen to In August

Of the song, Rose says: “‘In August’ tracks the dissolution of a friendship over the course of a year, throughout every season. There’s a particular kind of sadness to a friendship ending when there’s no one to blame, just as there’s something mournful about the inevitable change of weather. Sometimes it’s not a big fight but a gradual growing apart that marks the end – how do we make sense of our role in that? This song is an attempt to recognize and accept mutual culpability in an effort to move on.”

Half Waif will be live broadcasting an intimate set from her home this Friday March 27 7PM US EST / Saturday March 28 at 10 AEDT.
More details to come.

The Caretaker has received early praise from NPR’s All Songs Considered, Pitchfork, The FADER, Stereogum, Consequence of Sound, Paste, MTV, Nylon, UPROXX, Brooklyn Vegan, Under The Radar and more.

Over the course of eleven songs, Rose creates the lush world of a humid summer night, dreaming of and reaching for a season in which she is her “best self.” Referring to the album’s title, she says, “I kind of created a character. She’s someone who has been entrusted with taking care of this estate, taking care of the land, and she’s not doing a very good job. The weeds are growing everywhere, and she’s not taking care of herself.” For Rose, the character of The Caretaker serves as a warning of who she could become if she’s not more vigilant, and the resulting album sees her grappling with her desire for independence and the knotty reality that we need each other.

The Caretaker follows critically acclaimed album Lavender, named for the lavender that once grew in her grandmother’s garden. And on her most recent collection, Rose’s family history and intergenerational stories continue to seep their way into the songs. “There’s a family legacy of losing and seeking homes, a theme that has followed me,” she reflects, pointing to her mother’s journey as an Indian refugee from Uganda, and her grandmother’s displacement from Lahore after the partition of India. Rose herself was raised surrounded by the Berkshire mountains in Williamstown, Massachusetts, and today she finds inspiration in the shock of seasons of the Hudson Valley where she currently resides.

GORDI ANNOUNCES OUR TWO SKINS ALBUM + SHARES NEW SONG AND VIDEO FOR ‘AEROPLANE BATHROOM’

Our Two Skins album released June 19
New song ‘Aeroplane Bathroom’ out today with video shot in Bangkok
Album taps into feelings of isolation and identity. Recorded with Bon Iver’s production team at Sophie’s family farm in Canowindra
Touring the US with Of Monsters And Men late 2020

“Gordi is her own formidable talent” – NPR Music

Late last month, Sydney-via-Canowindra musician Gordi – also known as Sophie Payten – unveiled her poignant new single, ‘Sandwiches’. Today, Liberation Records is proud to share the news of an album release for Gordi, along with another taste of the record in ‘Aeroplane Bathroom’. The song (also the album opener) is accompanied by Gordi’s most stunning video released to date, which conveys the isolation and crippling anxiety that the album explores.

Our Two Skins will be released on June 19 via Liberation Records (Jagjaguwar internationally).

The writing of the album began after a nervous breakdown while pacing around an Etihad flight from Australia to Europe in late 2017.  Having finally completed her medical exams after years of painstaking study, and against the backdrop of Australia’s marriage equality vote, Sophie was grappling with a new truth in her identity. That internal struggle, which was compounded by her Catholic upbringing, led to an isolated internal state.  It was a turbulent, unsettled and isolating period. Our Two Skins chronicles this intense chapter of Gordi’s life, as she renegotiated who she was and how she fit into the world.

This stark sense of isolation and upheaval permeates the album and comes to the fore on ‘Aeroplane Bathroom’, which was penned in 20 anxious minutes whilst pacing around the stern of an Etihad flight from Australia to Europe.

“I wrote ‘Aeroplane Bathroom’ sitting in a window seat on a long haul flight. The people next to me were asleep and I was alone with my thoughts. I had that sensation of being trapped so I climbed over the other passengers and tried to escape to the bathroom.”
“The song is about feeling isolated. It comes at a very strange time now given we’re all locking ourselves in our homes, ‘socially isolating’ from our normal functional lives. There is no more dehumanising experience than to be cut off from everything you know. It can plunge you into total despair.”
Later, upon arriving home, Gordi recorded a single vocal to an out-of-tune piano. At her parents’ farm in Canowindra, with the help of Bon Iver production duo Chris Messina and Zach Hanson, these original parts were teased out to add soundscape. If you listen closely to the track, you can hear elements from the farm shining through – gates and chains, creaking doors, and a revving Subaru Impreza. This stripped back approach to the recording process was applied to the album in its entirety with all ten tracks laid down at the farm, using minimal equipment.  Eager to bottle the isolation and emptiness she felt during that period of rediscovery, the remoteness of Canowindra proved the right location.

Messina and Hanson flew from Wisconsin to Canowindra with several cases of gear and set up a temporary studio in an old cottage on the farm, dialing into the isolation of the songs’ subject matter; a musical quarantine. There was no phone reception, no wi-fi, and a tin outhouse located in a nearby shearing shed.

“A big theme of the record is: there’s nothing to hide behind. We didn’t have all the bells and whistles. You’re just standing there, with your hands in your pockets going: this is me. This is it. This is all I have.”
‘Aeroplane Bathroom’ arrives complete with a cinematic video from Kasimir Burgess, appropriately filmed across two aeroplane graveyards outside Bangkok. “To get in we had to negotiate with the squatters that live there,” says Gordi. “It was one-million-percent humidity and there were wild dogs and a small crocodile so any fear in my eyes is genuine.”

It follows the release of the album’s first official single ‘Sandwiches’, which was swiftly added to triple j and has seen strong support from both Apple Music and Spotify. Earlier this year, Gordi also released ‘The Cost’, (a standalone track in support of the Australian Bushfire Relief and regional drought efforts), and ‘INDIFFERENT’ (a haunting collaboration with Willaris. K).

Gordi’s previous full-length offering, 2017’s J Award-nominated Reservoir, established her place as an in-demand collaborator, seeing her release music with Troye Sivan, and touring with Sam Smith, Julien Baker and Fleet Foxes. In addition to sold-out local tours, Gordi has performed at Eaux Claires, Big Red Machine, and PEOPLE Festival amongst others, working with a dream list of like-minded artists, including Feist, Damien Rice, Alex Somers and Justin Vernon.

Gordi is due to tour the US with Of Monsters And Men later this year, keep an eye on  www.gordimusic.com for the full run of dates. Australian and further international tour dates will be announced as soon as is appropriate, in light of current COVID-19 advice.

Our Two Skins will be released on June 19 via Liberation Records for Australia/ New Zealand and Jagjaguwar for the rest of the world.

Where are you currently based and what is the music scene like there? Sydney. I think the scene here is really interesting. Although the lockout laws hit us pretty hard, the quality of music is astounding. There are some killer jazz and funk bands, but it’s a shame those genres don’t get as much exposure as they do in other cities and countries. How did you first start playing music? I picked up the guitar at around 14 to be part of a high school rock band. From there it was just a process of exploring my own curiosity while trying to understand how the guitar worked. I was obsessed with metal for a few years, then moved on to blues which led me to jazz, funk and R&B. What's been happening recently? I’ve been in writing mode for a bit. It comes in waves but this last batch sounds really promising. It’s always super interesting when you stumble across new ideas or different sounds. Your new single 'Crazy' is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting for this track? Tame Impala definitely turned me on to more synth based sounds, but after spending time in London I was drawn back to the guitar, so I wanted to blend the two. I tried put in a lot of R&B influences in there too, but still maintain a rock feel. In terms of songwriting, I was reflecting on the state of the world and how we seem to be headed for further isolation and disconnection. Although it was written before the coronavirus broke globally, it has some eerie parallels. It touches on mental health because I felt it was important to talk about a subject matter that often feels uncomfortable to discuss. Music has an incredible way of opening you up to things you could never express normally. Ultimately the song carries a positive message - you’re never alone when dealing with mental health issues because they’re universal. How did you go about writing Crazy? I was staying with some friends in London for a few months in 2019. I played some shows in Europe and by the end of the trip I had run out of money. I couldn’t afford to do anything but stay in the apartment and write songs all day. I ended up with about 40 songs and Crazy seemed to be a stand out. It started out as a simple demo with just the chorus and a verse. Once I got back to Sydney I rewrote a lot of parts and recorded everything again, but the core of the song is still the same. The lyrics were written in Sydney once the instrumental was finalised. I kept rewritting them up until the last minute before I had to send it off to be mixed. Where and when did you record and who with? My friends Nick Twiney and Siebe Pogson from the band Funk Engine play keys and bass. I did all the guitars, vocals, synths and drums. We recorded most of the track in my bedroom studio at the end of 2019/start of 2020. Then I sent them to be mixed by Jackon Barclay who is a wizard at making things sounds great. What programs/instruments did you use? Logic as the DAW, Diva for the synths and samples for some of the drums. The guitars, keys and acoustic drums were either straight DI instruments or recorded live. How did you approach the recording and production? I wanted to blend rock with R&B, so I’ve got those huge synths and fuzzed out guitars in the chorus mixed with 808s in the verse. I usually record everything just as demos first in my room then eventually reach out to other people when necessary. The recording itself is pretty straight forward. I use basic Logic plug-ins and a focusrite audio interface for instruments. At the end of the day the song is the most important thing for me. If it’s a great song it should stand on its own. Who are you listening to at the moment? Theophilus London, SZA, Stormzy, Brian Eno and a 60s Argentinian band Sandhy and Mandhy. What do you like to do away from music? It’s all music for me at the moment. I teach guitar and do a lot of cover gigs on the side for regular income. What's planned for 2020? I had a few releases planned but with everything in lockdown who knows. Maybe just songwriting quarantine. Favourite food and place to hangout? Fruit smoothies in the studio. https://www.facebook.com/slinkysounds/

A Statement from the Organizer
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
“We have been receiving an incredible amount of messages and support from all over the world after the Rainbow Disco Club 2020 cancellation announcement and are truly grateful for the support.

All of us are facing difficulties everyday now because of the effect of the Coronavirus. We had been busy trying to set up a crowdfunding and/or an alternative event until a few days ago but the situation surrounding the Coronavirus is changing every hour.

Many clubs in Europe and America have been forced to shut and events to be cancelled, and many borders are being closed and all these artists and promoters are suffering from the damage, losing their work opportunities just like us. At the same time, all the dance music fans are losing their places.

But, we must unite and fight against the unknown virus. Now, it is important to keep distance, avoid crowds and prevent the spread. We must limit our social activities and you and your loved ones must act carefully.

We must keep smiling. This is what we have learned in the last 11 years from you.
Hereby we would like to announce that we made the decision to throw a -hour long
streaming party on Saturday 18th April. This will be a first for us, but we will do what we can to replicate the actual festival in Higashi-Izu.

We hope this will be a special day for you during this long isolation time at home. Many fun merchandise items to enjoy the party at home are coming their way, so please look forward to them. Early-bird tickets are also ready in the hope that you will be counting the days with excitement.

We cannot gather at the same place but we look at this project as a campfire. We surround ourselves with music; we dance, talk, eat, smile well, and love a lot – let’s get warm.”
