OTIUH RELEASE NEW VIDEO FOR ‘POUR IT UP’ FOLLOWS THE RELEASE OF EP LA FESTA

by the partae June 11, 2020
written by the partae

“..steady accumulating looks across the Aus scene for a minute now..”
– AUD$

“You can’t be mad and listen to [Otiuh], you just can’t!”
– Nkechi Anele, triple j

“Otiuh have emerged as frontrunners of [Perth’s] next generation in rap music, with a stream of consistently top-tier singles.”
– Pilerats

Following the release of the high energy 7-track EP La Festa, released last month, hip hop duo Otiuh share their new video clip for ‘Pour It Up’ which premiered last night via 6KMC. Filmed, directed, produced and performed independently (with help from Perth videographer Dylan Guy), Otiuh are the makers of their own hip hop fantasy.

The lead single of their EP, ‘Pour It Up’ is inspired by the retrospect of a night out where you begin to question the world around you. In the verse: “Bunch of white dudes in the Ralph polo, did you even go out if you ain’t in the photo?”, solely highlights the sometimes superficial moments of partying. It’s a collective moment that’s been experienced by many; looking around on a night out and thinking “what the hell am I doing here?”. The overall aesthetic of the video is perfectly set to track’s satirical and bouncy mood. The track is also driven by a Mediterranean style guitar riff, showcasing the duo’s widespread influences and distinct sound that separates them from other hip hop acts in Australia, of which is further explored in their EP.

Due to COVID restrictions, the pair had to work within their limitations to produce a video clip that aided the track’s narrative and vibe – and they have done just that. Filmed over the course of one weekend in Cesare Papa‘s backyard, the video itself acts much like an introduction to the EP as a whole. As Cesare says: “These restrictions made us do what we do best; make familiar, ordinary locations look quirky & psychedelic. It felt like the pressure was off on this one. We were the crew as well as the performers operating strobe lights and smoke machines, so we planned it to be as easy as possible for ourselves. We let our crazy ideas run wild, kept concept loose.”

The video also acts as an interlude between the two tracks ‘Pour It Up’ and ‘Smoke Break’ (feat. MALi JO$E); the clip features a performance-focused segment, tied in with a psychedelic mechanic scene where the specific transition takes place.

“We wanted the music video to look how the music sounds; colourful, energetic, and not taking itself too seriously. Mali & Dylan’s approach to videos are super natural; working with them on this one was a breeze. Things really did just fall into place on this one,” continues Cesare.

Following the release of their EP La Festa, the duo’s track ‘Pour It Up’ was added to the new Spotify editorial playlist ‘The Hybrid’. Their previous EP in 2019 Cold Recreation and their 2020 releases ‘One For Me’ and ’21’ saw the pair receive national recognition from tastemakers such as AUD$, NME Australia, Purple Sneakers, Pilerats, as well as being added to Apple’s Music’s The New Australia, MTV and rage and high reviews across triple j unearthed. The duo have also received airplay across triple’s Home & Hosed, triple j Unearthed and support from a range of community radio stations including, FBi, RTRFM, Radio Adelaide and 4ZZZ.

‘Pour It Up’ official video is out NOW via 6KCM

Berlin is well known around the world not only as one of its party capitals, but also as one of the greatest artistic hubs for musicians and artists globally. Tiahi represents this community perfectly, bringing together influences of different cultures and uniting them into something new and shiny, into music full of positivity. His new single “Free” is an anthem for freedom, capturing the essence of Tiahi’s musical vision of “reinforcing positivity and helping others to cut through negativity in times of darkness”. Behind the catchy lyrics and the energetic yet laid-back sound of the song lies a deeper thought nonetheless: “Freedom begins in our heads, it’s an elusive concept. Even during those challenging times where we are physically confined due to the safety measures against Covid-19, the more we look inside ourselves, the more we will discover and learn about freedom”.  We agree, so let’s embrace life as it comes a bit more and sing out loud “WHEN I’M FREE!” alongside Tiahi.

ID&T organizes ultimate chill out vacation at campsite ‘Tijdloos’

by the partae June 10, 2020
written by the partae

Tijdloos (transl.: timeless) is an intimate camping experience for all ages, with a wide range of activities for the body & mind and soul with compliance to the 1,5-meter distance that is required by the Dutch government.

As this year’s festival summer and foreign summer holidays grinds to a halt and ID&T’s numerous decor pieces are left unused, ID&T steps in with a brand-new and surprising concept. From July 10th to August 17th, Tijdloos invites its guests to enjoy their summer vacation on the vast expanse of acres of the beautiful Ermerstrand in the province of Drenthe, the Netherlands. For almost 5 weeks, the campsite will be transformed into a magical summer destination where busy agendas, appointments – and even time – are left behind.

Creativity, innovation and passion to bring people together is deeply rooted in the DNA of the founders of events like Mysteryland, Defqon.1 Weekend Festival and Welcome to the Future. After receiving the news that no festivals will be taking place this season, the Tijdloos seed was planted and has carefully been cultivated since this day; and all the love and craftsmanship which has been built for decades is now intimately reinvented at Tijdloos.

Tijdloos Creative Director Carina Kornfeind: “In times of crisis, you get inspired to think ‘out of the box’ and that’s how Tijdloos was born: the most extraordinary summer destination of 2020. Tijdloos is something completely different than the festivals we usually organise. It is an intimate and free-spirited playground for all ages to enjoy life unconditionally together with their loved ones. Since there is a limited capacity, we expect that the demand will exceed the supply.”

Between spacious lawns, forests, islands and a lake the campsite guests are given the opportunity to fully live in the present moment. Various activities are spread upon 50 acres of natural surroundings such as a broad spiritual and mindfulness program, water sports and outdoor activities, interactive art installations, world music and lectures for adults as well as the younger guests. The entire landscape is colourfully decorated with the most beautiful decor pieces and light installations, following the ID&T philosophy.

Guests can choose between different glamping accommodations that are fully equipped, but also have the opportunity to bring their own tent. During the intimate gathering, the organization conforms to all guidelines of the Dutch Institute of Health and Environment (RIVM) and the regulations of the security regions will apply. Social distancing will be in place, at both the campsite and during the activities.

Overnight stays for camping ‘Tijdloos’ can be booked via www.wij-zijn-tijdloos.nl. During the week, you already have a spot for €29 per night per person and in the weekend for €39 per night per person (children join at a reduced rate).

Please follow the advice of your local government on traveling abroad before booking a spot at Camping Tijdloos.

Benny Walker

by the partae June 10, 2020
written by the partae
Where are you currently based and what is the music scene like?
I’m based in Echuca/Moama on the border of NSW and Victoria. There’s not much of a scene at the moment! Normally we have two great, yet very different festivals in our towns. In July we normally have the Echuca Winter Blues Festival and in February we have Riverboats Music Festival. I’ve been fortunate enough to perform at both several times.

How did you first start playing music?
Both of my grandfathers played as well as my Dad, my siblings, cousins and other family members. Music has just always been there. I took my first formal lessons (piano) at the age of 8 and then started playing guitar at 10. I didn’t start singing until late high school.

What’s been happening recently?
I’ve done a few live stream shows which has been fun. The new album is out now, so I was just doing a few things in preparation for that. Like a lot of people at the moment, I’m pretty restricted as to what I can do.
Your new album ‘Chosen Line’ is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting?
I always write from a lot of different places when it comes to inspiration. I guess that’s why my albums never really settle on a genre. I take inspiration out of everyday life and don’t usually write about something until I’m reflecting on it or have had an opportunity to digest that experience and get some perspective on it.

How did you go about writing the music?
Generally speaking, I write at home in my “music room”. All of my instruments are there and it has a nice feel. I can knock out demos really quickly too if I get the urge. There are a few co-writes on the album as well that were worked up in a studio. I also wrote “Break Me Into Pieces” in the studio during the recording of the album.

Where and when did you record and who with?
I recorded “Chosen Line” with Jan Skubiszewski at his “Red Moon Studios” about an hour outside of Melbourne.

How did you approach the recording process?
I’d sent Jan and the band most of the demos in advance and we pretty much knew what songs would make the album. We set aside the whole month of June 2019 to record. Danny McKenna (Drums) and Anthony Liddell (Bass) would come in on each monday and lay down 4 songs with me live. After that Jan and I would spend the rest of the week adding any overdubs or additional parts to the songs. Late in the process we had Xani Kolac come in and play some beautiful violin on a few songs and add some backing vocals.

Please tell us about the amazing cover art for the album:
Yorta Yorta visual artist, John Patten, created the album artwork taking into account my songline and the Yorta Yorta totem the long-neck turtle as well as the river that also represents the fretboard of a guitar. I come from a long line of storytellers and musicians, and they’ve all had a significant impact on the person I’ve become and the musician that I am. I’m a Yorta Yorta man and in our culture, we would call that my Songline.

Who are you listening to at the moment?
We have Double J on in the house most of the day. If I’m driving somewhere, I’ve been listening to Jason Isbell’s latest album. He is a phenomenal songwriter.

What do you like to do away from music?
Be outdoors! I spent a lot of my childhood playing outside and exploring the bush. I love the feeling of being amongst the big gumtrees and near the Murray River. I really love doing Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu as well. It’s really technical and takes a lot of discipline, so I get to exercise my brain and my body.

What’s planned for the remainder of 2020?
Hopefully I can get out and play some live shows sooner rather than later! I think I’ll start with some really intimate solo shows until restrictions ease and then work my way up to bigger venues with the full band.
Favourite food and place to hangout?
I’m torn between Thai and Mexican food! I’m happy to hang out wherever the good company is.

Hansard’s creation of art thru the act of storytelling has been growing in these moments and he recently recorded the new song “Cold Comfort”. He also created a video for the song at home and has shared it with the hope it would bring exactly what its title implies. Watch it HERE. "(it’s) a handmade video for a homemade song written for the time that's in it," Hansard said. In 2016, Hansard embarked on a life-changing journey as he stepped in to join a team and be the 4th oarsman in a small hand-built wooden boat called a curragh. The experience, as they rowed their way across the north coast of Spain following the Camino trail, was chronicled in the documentary film The Camino Voyage - released in 2018. In Danny’s honor, Hansard has released a new video for “Good Life of Song”, a track from his latest release This Wild Willing, with footage from The Camino Voyage, dedicated to Sheehy and his memory. “I wrote this song in Paris while in residence at the Irish Cultural Centre,” Hansard explained. “It’s a tribute to the life of bards and troubadours on their lifelong march through the towns and villages of the world, singing and drinking, expressing the sorrows and the joys of the age as they court darkness and light with equal knowing. A song of gratitude for the gift of singing. The album garnered the best reviews of his 20+ year career with VICE calling it a “reinvention”, MOJO deeming it “an immersive, deeply satisfying work” and NPR Music saying, “These songs feel rawer, broader, more sweeping and emotional and expansive”. Hansard also recently sat down with the Broken Record Podcast, hosted by the producer Rick Rubin, the writer Malcolm Gladwell and the former New York Times editor Bruce Headlam to discuss This Wild Willing and its inspirations. BECCA MANCARI Shares new single ‘Lonely Boy’ New album The Greatest Part out Friday 26 June

by the partae June 10, 2020
written by the partae

PRAISE FOR RECENT SINGLE ‘HUNTER’:

“Shimmering…pointillist…skittering…and serrated-edge.” – Rolling Stone

“Honest and beautiful songwriting.” – Double J

“Best New Songs” – NPR Music

“Akin to Cate Le Bon or Aldous Harding” – Consequence of Sound

“Ethereal” – BrooklynVegan

“Fluid and organic” – Nashville Scene

“It’s a hypnotic and atmospheric song that plays with elements of rock, psych, folk and more to create something very much of her own mold, something like a mix between Sharon Van Etten and St. Vincent” – We All Want Someone To Shout For

Becca Mancari releases her third single ‘Lonely Boy’ off her forthcoming album, The Greatest Part, out June 26 via Captured Tracks / Remote Control, her first for the label.

Inspired by Becca’s dog, ‘Lonely Boy’ reflects on the ways that fear can hold us back from human connection. The canine-filled, trippy video was animated by Anna Firth. This track is preceded by ‘First Time,’ which Conde Nast’s Them. praised as a “gorgeous celebration of the existence and diversity of Southern queers” and ‘Hunter,’ that has been on BBC 6 Music’s A List since April.

Becca Mancari on ‘Lonely Boy’ –  “Lonely Boy” started out as a song about my dog, Abe, who had always struggled with severe anxiety and depression, as a lot of rescue dogs do. And whenever I’d watch him I could see my reflection of those attributes in my own life. I wrote this song way before COVID and social distancing, but I have to believe I’m not the only lonely boy out there, during this time or any time really. If you feel the same, then this song goes out to you. Can’t wait to till we can sing it all together.”

Produced by Paramore drummer Zac Farro, The Greatest Part marks a significant sonic evolution for the Nashville-based songwriter since her debut and a foray into her more vulnerable work to date. The lyrics are raw and intrepid here, peeling back old scars to explore the emotional and psychological turmoil Mancari weathered growing up gay in a fundamentalist Christian home, while at the same time examining the ties that continue to bind her to the family she loves. Mancari’s musicianship has been praised by NPR for its “exquisite self-awareness” and her debut LP was hailed as one of the year’s best by Rolling Stone, who applauded her “confident vocals [and] spacious, hazy production.”

This September, Mancari will open in North America for longtime musical collaborator Brittany Howard whom she performed with as part of the supergroup Bermuda Triangle.

BENNY WALKER Releases third studio album

by the partae June 9, 2020
written by the partae

Chosen Line is Benny Walker’s third studio album.  Produced by Jan Skubiszewski and Pip Norman the album features co-writes with both producers along with musicians George Carpenter [Your Place] and Desmond Masé / Rachael Lia Carne [We’re Home].

Chosen Line had it’s full 6 piece band live debut at the recent Port Fairy Folk Festival and will be officially released on on Friday 5th June 2020.

Chosen Line is a full album experience and showcases both sides of Benny Walker. Tracks All Ya Gotta Do Is Call and I Don’t Blame You are both strong Blues bass tracks that have yielded Benny’s highest streaming figures to date. Current single We’re Home and title track Chosen Line showcase his more introverted soulful nature.

“Chosen Line” could’ve been called “Songline” or even “Unchosen Line”. The title represents my “chosen” career path. I didn’t really choose it. I embraced it. I come from a long line of storytellers and musicians, and they’ve all had a significant impact on the person I’ve become and the musician that I am. I’m a Yorta Yorta man and in our culture, we would call that my Songline. Yorta Yorta visual artist, John Patten, created the album artwork taking into account my songline and the Yorta Yorta totem the long-neck turtle as well as the river that also represents the fretboard of a guitar. says Benny Walker

Chosen Line – album track listing

Your Place – [Benjamin Walker / George Carpenter]

Real Enough – [Benjamin Walker / Pip Norman]

We’re Home – [Benjamin Walker / Desmond Masé / Rachael Carne]

If You Want It, You Got It – [Benjamin Walker]

All Ya Gotta Do Is Call – [Benjamin Walker]

I Don’t Impress Myself – [Benjamin Walker]

Said to be one of the best voices in Australia, Yorta Yorta man Benny Walker never fails to take you on a emotionally driven journey. “Walker’s voice has the drag and timbre of a natural soul man...”  Michael Dwyer

Hailing from regional Victoria, Indigenous singer/songwriter Benny Walker with a voice that is said to have the drag and timbre of a natural soul man …his music is pure blues-rock, buoyed by clean, lyrical guitar solos and the throb of electric organ.

Benny’s love songs and epic tales are mixed with passion for the land, the people and deep grooves that reach the soul.

His third studio album CHOSEN LINE will be released on June 5th and features All Ya Gotta Do Is Call and We’re Home. Both songs shot to No. 1 on the AMRAP charts and are streaming strongly across Spotify and Apple Music. These latest songs produced by Jan Skubiszewski mix Blues and Roots with a contemporary guitar driven soul vibe.

In 2016 Benny earned four NIMA nominations and the award for “Best Aboriginal Talent” at The Age Music Victoria Awards. An accomplished solo performer, Walker is regularly joined on stage by his band, where he replaces his acoustic guitar with a Stratocaster and indulges his passion for the big blues-rock sound.

In 2017 Benny’s new single GHOST and its EP Undercover; both debuted at No.1 on the iTunes Blues Chart. It was then he captured the attention of Byron Bay Bluesfest boss Peter Noble. “I saw Benny play at a guitar festival …. did he EVER deliver…. I really think he has a big future coming… and I’m putting my money where my mouth is…. and booked him again this year for our 30th Bluesfest 2019. Two years in a row…” Byron Bluesfest Boss Peter Noble

Benny has performed alongside some of Australia’s finest, including Alex Lloyd, Archie Roach, Baker Boy, Blue King Brown, Mojo Juju and Tim Rogers, and was awarded Victorian Indigenous Performing Arts Award for Best New Talent in 2012. GORDI RELEASES NEW SINGLE ‘UNREADY’ WITH VIDEO FROM FORTHCOMING ALBUM OUR TWO SKINS + CONFIRMED TO SUPPORT BON IVER’S AU TOUR 2021

by the partae June 9, 2020
written by the partae
  • Watch the video for ‘Unready’ now, featuring a cameo from Alex Borstein – voice of Lois Griffin in Family Guy + currently starring in The Marvelous Mrs Maisel
  • Local proceeds from ‘Unready’ sales on Bandcamp during June to be donated to NAAJA – North Australian Aboriginal Justice Agency
  • Our Two Skins album out June 26 via Liberation Records
With a little over two weeks left until the release of her sophomore album Our Two Skins, Gordi shares a new single ‘Unready’, complete with video, from the offering. Gordi is also proud to join the line-up for Bon Iver’s recently rescheduled Australian arena tour for March and April next year.

Following previously released songs ‘Sandwiches’, ‘Aeroplane Bathroom’ and ‘Volcanic’, ‘Unready’ appears like a blast of pop optimism, a song about being caught off-guard by your life while you stand in the middle of it. Co-produced by John Congleton, the track is ornamented with synth, muted percussion, and Gordi’s emotive voice. ‘Unready’ began as a voice memo Gordi had recorded while sitting at a harmonium in Reykjavik, Iceland at the beginning of 2017. To bring it to life, she, Chris Messina (Bon Iver, Bruce Hornsby, Big Red Machine), and Zach Hanson (Bon Iver, Hand Habits, Waxahatchee, Tallest Man) turned out the lights and plugged in an old strobe light she uncovered in her brother’s bedroom in an attempt to put her in the right headspace.

“For me it sits quite separately to the rest of the record – it’s the only song whose lyrics predate the period of my life described by the rest of the songs on Our Two Skins,” says Gordi. “When it came time to record the song we tracked every guitar we could find for the big strum sound in the chorus. Singing it proved a challenge because it sits a little higher than my comfortable register. We had tried to do the vocal takes in the cottage but it wasn’t working so one night we ventured over to my parent’s house for a change of scene. Chris asked me (as a joke) if we had any strobe lights in the house to set the mood. We always joke that you could request any object from my Mum and she’d have it to you in minutes from some treasure trove of stuff in the house. Sure enough, we found a strobe light in the wardrobe of my brother’s childhood bedroom. We turned the lights off and hit the strobe, setting the perfect conditions to finally execute the vocal take for ‘Unready’.”
The single is accompanied by a video directed by Madeleine Purdy, which features a cameo from Family Guy’s Alex Borstein (voice of Lois Griffin). Alex is also one of the leads in current TV series The Marvelous Mrs Maisel, and put her hand up to join Gordi’s video after a series of Instagram DMs and Tweets.

Playing on a sequence of slightly absurd and incongruous scenarios, the clip acts as a flamboyant enactment of the album’s playful side. “I asked Purdy to make a video in the middle of a pandemic, and we finally arrived at this idea: “vignettes of despair”, Gordi reflects.

The writing of Our Two Skins began after a nervous breakdown while pacing around an Etihad flight from Australia to Europe in late 2017. Gordi had finished exams to earn a medical degree and after trading her “nice, safe relationship” for a new one, she began coming to terms with a new truth in her identity.  That identity struggle and her new relationship, which played out against the backdrop of the marriage equality plebiscite in Australia and her Catholic upbringing, led to an isolated internal state. That state was further fueled by distance, trying communication and lost loved ones. Our Two Skins chronicles the intense and impossible time that Gordi spent renegotiating who she is and how she fits into the world.

Eager to bottle the isolation and emptiness she felt during this period of rediscovery, the remoteness of Canowindra, the tiny town where her family has lived for over a century, proved the right location.  Here, her internal state could be seen, felt and captured. Gordi called upon her friends Chris Messina (Bon Iver, Bruce Hornsby, Big Red Machine) and Zach Hanson (Bon Iver, Hand Habits, Waxahatchee, Tallest Man) to help her achieve this sonic goal. The producer duo flew from Wisconsin to Canowindra armed with selected gear, and set up a studio in an old cottage on the family farm for a month – a quarantine-premonition of sorts. There was no phone reception, no wi-fi, and a tin outhouse located in a nearby shearing shed. “It was very removed, very isolated,” Gordi says. The trio each selected their favourite few instruments and studio tools, and restricted themselves to just those resources while making Our Two Skins.

Currently, Gordi has applied to return to the medical field to help out during the COVID-19 crisis, where she will likely be placed in a pop-up “fever clinic” or in a rural hospital. She is on standby with a variety of hospitals and health authorities for rural local work and metropolitan overflow work, saying she is ready to return to the wards while touring is not possible. Speaking to News Breakfast on ABC TV in Australia she said “I’ll dig out my work backpack, make sure my stethoscope is functioning as it should and go back to my other life; it will likely be in a more frantic state than I left it.”

In light of recent international events, Gordi will be donating proceeds from ‘Unready’ Bandcamp sales during June to NAAJA in Australia and NAACP Legal Defense Fund in the US.

Gordi’s debut album Reservoir debuted in the Top 20 of the ARIA Albums Chart in 2017.

Hatchie & The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart Release The Jesus And Mary Chain Cover ‘Sometimes Always’ On Digital & 7″

by the partae June 9, 2020
written by the partae
‘It’s a true match made in dream pop heaven’ – CLASH
In the first release since her internationally acclaimed debut album Keepsake (2019), Hatchie has announced a collaboration with The Pains of Being Pure at Heart for a cover of ‘Sometimes Always’, The Jesus and Mary Chain’s collaboration with Mazzy Star’s Hope Sandoval from 1994. The track is out now on all digital services and will be released on 7” in Australia exclusive to indie stores on Friday 19 June. Alongside ‘Sometimes Always’, the release features B-side ‘Adored’, Hatchie’s previously-released 2018 Adult Swim digital single and the only Hatchie track to not exist on vinyl until now.
Listen to ‘Sometimes Always’ here
Of the release, Hatchie’s Harriette Pilbeam says: “it was a dream come true to record this cover of one of my favourite collaborations with one of my favourite artists. I’m so glad it’s finally getting released because it’s extra special to me.”

100% of sales from the limited international release on Bandcamp Day last Friday, June 5 were donated to The Movement for Black Lives and The Loveland Foundation.

Last year, Hatchie released her critically acclaimed debut album, Keepsake, which The New York Times called “blissed-out but not blissful synth-pop,” and NPR hailed as “gorgeous, fuzz-drenched dream-pop.” VICE praised the songwriting as “timeless and inviting” and Paste called it “life affirming… every track here is a knockout.”

More exciting Hatchie news on the horizon – watch this space.

Praise for Keepsake :
” …a young Australian singer whose music reveals a lighter heart: Her sugar-dusted melodies can be heard on last year’s “Sure,” and “Secret,” from her just-released debut album.” – The New York Times

“Each song is concentrated on romance, in the form of heartbreak, desire, and wonder, delivered with enough jangle to melt the iciest heart.” – Pitchfork

“One of the most fully realised Australian debut albums you’ll hear this year, Keepsake guarantees that Hatchie, like the album’s namesake, is definitely one to treasure” – triple j

“On her debut album, Aussie artist Hatchie pushes her songwriting boundaries and explores new sounds. “Obsessed” ponders friendships and how they bolster our lives.” – KCRW

“If Sugar & Spice was an out-of-nowhere brief burst of swirling dreampop that struck an uncanny balance between the genre’s dual predilections towards thick haze and bracing clarity, her debut LP Keepsake sounds bigger and bolder in every way.”
– Bandcamp

“From the opening notes of “Not That Kind” until the closing utterances of “Keep,” her vice-like grip over your attention never threatens to wane. This is a record destined to sit at the beginning of a promising legacy in years to come, as Hatchie continues to create jangling sonic comfort food far into the future.” – Under the Radar
