Knotfest – Friday 28 Feb 2025 – Flemington Racecourse, Melbourne

by the partae March 2, 2025
written by the partae

Words + Photography: Louie Mosscrop

Knotfest Australia kicked it off in Melbourne, this wasn’t just a concert; it was a pilgrimage, a day where the city’s metal faithful gathered under the blazing Australian sun to partake in a sonic ritual. From the early afternoon’s first crushing chords to the final, echoing roar from Slipknot, the day unfolded as a meticulously crafted tapestry of metal, each thread contributing to the festival’s overwhelming power. The anticipation was palpable, a collective hum of excitement that vibrated through the crowd, a testament to the enduring and evolving power of metal in the Australian music scene.

The lineup was a masterclass in metal diversity, a carefully curated selection that showcased the metal’s breadth and depth.

Vended, with their raw, youthful energy, brought a fresh and ferocious sound, proving that the next generation of metal is ready to take the stage. Their performance was a jolt of adrenaline, a reminder of metal’s ever-evolving spirit.

Slaughter To Prevail, emerging with a visceral intensity, owned the stage with unrelenting heaviness. Alex Terrible’s guttural vocals and their crushing breakdowns resonated with a primal force, leaving the crowd stunned and invigorated, unfortunately having to stop mid set to get medics to assist with what we hope is a now fully healed festival goer. Despite their brutal nature Alex and the band made sure they were out of further harms way before continuing their set.

Knotfest’s atmosphere was a living, breathing entity, a testament to the power of shared passion. The mosh pits, far from being mere displays of aggression, were expressions of communal release, a physical manifestation of the music’s emotional intensity. The crowd, a diverse tapestry of metalheads, was united by a shared sense of belonging, a feeling of being part of something larger than themselves. The festival grounds buzzed with a sense of camaraderie, with fans exchanging stories, sharing their favorite bands, and celebrating the unifying power of heavy music. Beyond the music, the festival offered a vibrant marketplace, with merchandise stalls, food vendors, and interactive displays, creating a holistic festival experience. The sense of community was palpable, making Knotfest more than just a concert, but a genuine cultural event, even under the intense Australian sun.

Polaris, delivered a performance that was both technically precise and emotionally charged. Their blend of metalcore and progressive elements was met with thunderous applause, solidifying their position as a leading force in the Australian metal scene.

Within Temptation, bringing a touch of symphonic grandeur, offered a captivating contrast. Their soaring vocals and intricate arrangements created a mesmerizing atmosphere, proving that metal can be both heavy and beautiful. This being their first visit down under, lets hope not the last.

BABYMETAL, the enigmatic Japanese trio, injected a dose of theatricality and infectious energy into the festival. Their fusion of kawaii aesthetics and heavy metal riffs was a captivating spectacle, a testament to the genre’s capacity for innovation and cross-cultural appeal.

The intense heat of the Australian summer day, coupled with the physical demands of the mosh pits, underscored the importance of hydration and sun protection. Despite these minor considerations, the overall festival experience remained overwhelmingly positive. The festival’s meticulous organisation, and well-maintained facilities contributed to a smooth and enjoyable experience for attendees, some more shade wouldn’t have gone unnoticed however.

Hatebreed, with their signature brand of hardcore intensity, delivered a set that was pure, unadulterated aggression. Their relentless energy and empowering lyrics ignited the crowd, creating a swirling vortex of moshing bodies.

A Day To Remember, with their sing-along anthems and infectious stage presence, provided a welcome moment of collective catharsis. Their blend of pop-punk sensibilities and metalcore aggression created a singalong atmosphere, uniting the crowd in a shared moment of passionate release.

Finally, Slipknot, the architects of modern metal mayhem, delivered a performance that was nothing short of a sonic and visual assault. Their iconic masks, frenetic stage presence, and timeless anthems ignited the crowd, transforming the festival grounds into a swirling vortex of energy. Delivering an all new show it was a spectacle to witness and a show no one will forget any time soon.

Knotfest Melbourne was a resounding success, a testament to the enduring power of heavy music and the passionate community that surrounds it. The festival’s meticulously curated lineup, electric atmosphere, and dedicated fanbase combined to create an unforgettable experience. It was a day of sonic immersion, a tribal gathering where metalheads from all walks of life came together to celebrate their shared passion under the Southern Cross. Knotfest’s Melbourne has undoubtedly left an indelible mark on the city’s music scene, forging a legacy of metal mayhem and communal celebration. For those who were there, the memories of Knotfest Melbourne will resonate long after the final notes have faded, a testament to the power of live music to unite and inspire, even under the harsh Australian sun.

…So when does the 2026 line up drop?

Green Day – Saviours Tour, Marvel Stadium, Melbourne 1/3/25

by the partae March 2, 2025
written by the partae

Words + Photography: Nate Hill

It’s a perfect summer evening in Melbourne. Sixty thousand people have gathered at Marvel Stadium with the roof open to bare witness to Green Day on The Saviours Tour. Here to celebrate 30 years of ‘Dookie’ and 20 years of ‘American Idiot’, the crowd were buzzing with excitement.

Private Function kicked off the night with a wild, unpredictable energy that instantly set the tone. The band tore through their set with playful chaos, throwing themselves into it both figuratively and literally. Both of the bands singers strutted confidently down the stage like it was his personal runway, owning every inch of the spotlight, balancing rockstar bravado with a sharp sense of humour. It was clear they were taking in the spectacle of playing a stadium show. At one point Chris Penney said “This ain’t the Tote”.

In a bold move, they encouraged the crowd to boo them, challenging the audience with a grin, promising to win them back — and they did. The call-and-response moments crackled with energy, turning the pit into a wave of raised hands and clapping by the time the last song rolled around. It was a performance that blurred the line between rebellion and charm, a perfect cocktail of punk spirit and crowd engagement.

Following the chaotic charm of Private Function, AFI took the stage and instantly shifted the atmosphere. From the first note, it was clear this was a band at the peak of their craft — a masterclass in precision and passion. The vocals were flawless, with Davey Havok’s voice soaring effortlessly from haunting whispers to gut-punching screams, every lyric hitting with emotional weight.

The band was impossibly tight, each member locked into the rhythm with an intensity that only comes from years of playing together. The balance between polished professionalism and raw, emotive energy made the set feel both larger-than-life and deeply personal.

But tonight was all about Green Day and they proved exactly why they’re rock royalty. From the moment they hit the stage, the energy was electric — and the crowd was one of the loudest I’ve ever heard. The call-and-response moments were deafening, a sea of voices echoing Billie Joe Armstrong’s every word, turning the arena into one massive choir. Tonight Marvel Stadium was converted into the church of Green Day and they were there to be our Saviours.

The show wasn’t just about sound — it was a full-blown spectacle. An inflatable plane soared over the crowd, and flames roared around the drum kit, adding a fiery edge to the already explosive atmosphere. But Green Day knows how to strip it back too — at one point, it was just Billie Joe and his guitar, the crowd singing every lyric in perfect unison, a raw and intimate moment amid the chaos.

It was an epic two and a half our set that included the band playing their iconic albums ‘Dookie’ and ‘American Idiot’ in full.

A playful interlude of All by Myself  brought a lighthearted break. One of the highlights had to be when they pulled a fan from the crowd to join them on Know Your Enemy— a dream come true for one lucky person and a reminder of the band’s connection to their fans.

Green Day didn’t just perform — they ignited a fire, blending punk anthems, unforgettable theatrics, and pure rock ‘n’ roll magic. Fans of all ages were treated to a masterclass in stadium rock and we hope to see them again sooner rather than later.

Pickle Juice Release ‘Cheeky EP With The Boys’

by the partae March 1, 2025
written by the partae

Emerging from the frosty slopes of Revelstoke, BC, Pickle Juice came together during a lackluster snow season in 2023. Born out of boredom and a shared love for music, this five-piece band unites members from Canada, Australia, and England, fusing diverse influences into a distinctive alt-rock sound. Their first singles, “Toxic and Sweet” and “Caught in a Lie,” dropped in 2024, catching ears across BC’s ski resorts and beyond. Now, with their debut EP Cheeky set for release in February 2025 and a Western Canada tour alongside Ottawa’s AHRF, the band is primed for their biggest year yet. Fans are drawn to their driving rhythms, magnetic melodies, and guitar hooks that carve out a space as one of Western Canada’s most exciting new acts.

“Our sound really came together in a cramped basement full of snowboard gear and old instruments,” recalls lead guitarist Josh Radford. “It was chaos, but it pushed us to explore something unique.” With influences spanning continents, Pickle Juice blends the grit of Australia’s rock edge, the UK’s indie flair, and North America’s raw authenticity. “We’re not just five ski bums,” says vocalist Tim van der Krogt. “Our music connects with anyone who’s ever felt out of place or craved something real.” Their EP reflects this global identity, each track showcasing different musical roots while maintaining their signature energy.

Cheeky EP delivers on the band’s promise of raw, infectious energy, offering a five-track ride through anthemic choruses, clever lyricism, and dynamic instrumentation. Opening track “Powder Days” immediately sets the tone, layering punchy guitars over an unshakable rhythm section, while “Better Off” leans into a grittier, Brit-rock-inspired sound reminiscent of Arctic Monkeys. The standout track, “Avalanche Hearts,” balances soaring melodies with introspective lyricism, solidifying its place as the emotional core of the EP. Closing with the raucous “Loose Ends,” Pickle Juice proves they’re more than just a novelty act from the slopes—they’re a band with staying power.

With Cheeky, Pickle Juice has crafted an EP that is both playful and poignant, offering a fresh yet familiar take on modern alt-rock. As they embark on their Western Canada tour, expect their growing momentum to carry them far beyond the mountain town roots that started it all.

Fuller Hull Releases ‘Not Long For Here’

by the partae March 1, 2025
written by the partae

Meet Fuller Hull—the “Songwriter for the Second Chancers.” He’s not your typical up-and-comer. In fact, he’s anything but. Hailing from Manitoba, Canada, Fuller is a country-folk artist with a twist—one that comes from a life well-lived, mistakes well-made, and stories well-earned. Think of him like a well-worn farm tool—rugged, dependable, and always ready to get the job done.

Fuller’s been called a “Jack of all Trades,” and for good reason. He’s done just about everything, but it’s his songwriting that truly sets him apart. Whether he’s putting pen to paper or stepping onto a stage, he weaves his experiences into every note, turning a lifetime of lessons into music that hits home. Raised “free range” in the city before putting down roots on the Canadian prairie, Fuller’s journey has been anything but predictable. After more than 20 years away from the music scene, he’s back—and let’s just say, he’s lived more than most people twice his age.

In a world obsessed with overnight success, Fuller is playing the long game. For him, authenticity isn’t something you manufacture—it’s something you earn through sweat, grit, and time. His music is a reflection of that, raw and real, just like the world he’s lived in. A true Gen-Xer, he’s doing things his way, on his own terms.

His debut album, March, is a deeply personal introduction to his sound, while his follow-up, The Unsuspected and Unstoppable, pulls from his time in the city, the mountains, the farm, and the heart. Honest, vulnerable, and unapologetically real, Fuller Hull isn’t just telling stories—he’s inviting you to live them, one song at a time.

Aotearoa indie faves NO CIGAR kick off 2025 with new track ‘PROBLEM’

by the partae February 28, 2025
written by the partae

Photo: Tim Cotton

Capturing the momentum of a massive 2024 and bringing it into the New Year, Aotearoa’s NO CIGAR comes out swinging with the release of their new single, ‘PROBLEM’. Blending a rich tapestry of indie influences together with a natural charisma and talent for musicality, the five-piece present a driving indie anthem for fans and newcomers alike.

As their first single drop for the year, ‘PROBLEM’ sets things up nicely for NO CIGAR; a prime example of the music still to come, this is a track that easily invites the listener in and keeps their attention, as the band flexes easily with a laid-back vibe and confidence in their chemistry.

Created during a writing trip in France, ‘PROBLEM’ is built on perspectives gained from life on the road – the ups and downs that are faced during this time. Along with the band’s 2024 single ‘CHANTILLY’, ‘PROBLEM’ was created in space where NO CIGAR found themselves far from home. The energy and cohesive nature of the single however, demonstrates the close-knit dynamic the New Zealanders have retained as their profile beyond Aotearoa has continued to grow.

“Having flown to the other side of the world to tour and create, there was a very real pressure to create something special. Following on from writing our first single ‘Chantilly’, the floodgates seemed to open to this new material, and ‘Problem’ was one of the first that came from this. The guitar riff had been sitting with guitarist Arthur for a number of years, but he’d never found the moment to introduce it to the band.

Living in an AirBnb that was adjoined to our host, there were a string of songs from this record that succumbed to a much more chill style of drumming. Ned had to put an oven mit over his drum to allow us to jam late in the evening so we wouldn’t wake our host’s young son asleep next door. While ‘Chantilly’ was a song we wrote during daylight hours, ‘Problem’ was very much one of the late sessions, hence taking on the slightly cruisier vibe. It’s a journey in itself, much like our trip.” NO CIGAR

NO CIGAR formed in 2019 and has had a rapid rise to recognition as one of the country’s most promising acts. They have toured the world with their signature blend of psychedelic rock and groovy guitars, all the while drawing critical acclaim for albums such as 2023’s THE GREAT ESCAPE, which featured the #1 rock radio smash hit, ‘Concubine’. The track also debuted at #10 on 2024’s The Rock radio annual yearly countdown – the highest debut for a new band. THE GREAT ESCAPE continues to chart in the top 20 on the Aotearoa albums chart, where it has remained for 55 weeks.

Their debut album BIENVENIDO, released in 2022, and their 2020 EP RADICAL ROAD have also earned them critical acclaim.

May 2024 saw NO CIGAR complete their second tour of the UK, a trip that included a sold out show at the Islington Assembly Hall in London, entertaining a crowd of 900. March will see NO CIGAR take ‘PROBLEM’ on the road across a number of tour dates in Aotearoa, with an Australian return also in the works for 2025.

“..(‘Concubine’) is well constructed, featuring a wide range of instrumentation, taking a cool sonic turn halfway through. It starts out hazy and slow, but soon finds a crowd pleasing groove that’s bound to be received positively at shows and festivals this summer.”

ROLLING STONE (on ‘Concubine’, 2023)

“Each performance is a journey guaranteed to envelop you in romanticism, to the ever-evolving backdrop of a thumping sonic experience. With elements of alternative, folk, and indie rock, they also utilise groove-based rhythms with psychedelic undertones to keep your feet moving & your shoulders rolling.”

TWICE THE HYPE

“No Cigar has noticeably little banter, and are mostly here to play their music, which they do very well. The crowd was wild and some people climb onto their friends’ shoulders to see over the rowdy room full of music lovers. Anyone who’s not on someone else’s should is awkwardly pressed together as the venue was clearly at capacity, if not over”

Interview: Max McNown On ‘Night Diving’ A Deeper Sound

by the partae February 20, 2025
written by the partae

Congratulations on the release of Night Diving! This album explores new sonic territory—what inspired this shift in your sound compared to Wandering?

I’ve been growing into my own sound as an artist, and the shift could be attributed to discovering newer influences such as Noah Kahan and Gracie Abrams.

Your new single, Better Me For You (Brown Eyes), is deeply introspective. Can you share the story behind the lyrics and what inspired you to write it?

Better Me For You (Brown Eyes) follows the journey that my romantic life took following the acquisition of independence. I wasn’t the person I wanted to be, and it took an amazing girl coming into my life to help me change for the better.

Your journey from busking on a pier to selling out headline shows has been incredible. At what point did you realize your music was truly connecting with a global audience?

The streams continue to feel surreal to this day… but I would say a pivotal turning point was when fans started to send videos of them hearing my music in stores and on the radio.

Your song A Lot More Free has amassed over 80M+ streams and had a viral resurgence on TikTok. What do you think it is about that song that resonates so strongly with fans?

I think the subject matter of A Lot More Free can translate into many different experiences. The pain-filled sound of the vocal performance, coupled with the broad language of the chorus and verses, creates a global and digestible track.

You’ve turned down opportunities from major TV talent shows to walk your own path. What led to that decision, and how do you feel it has shaped your career?

I feel as though that decision was pivotal in my artistic journey. Although I have nothing against the shows themselves, I felt I had established a career already and was hesitant to let that career be attributed to success on a game show.

You’ve spoken about your brother’s battle with cancer and how it influenced your journey. How has that experience impacted your songwriting and personal outlook on life?

Several songs have been directly influenced by my brother’s battle, specifically Can’t Hide Light and Freezing In November. In a more general sense, his journey has allowed me to “zoom out” my perspective and keep close to me the things and people that are truly important.

With Night Diving produced by Jamie Kenney, what was the most memorable moment in the studio while bringing this album to life?

The entire writing session that created Night Diving was one of the most memorable experiences. It allowed me to explore within myself and treat the experience like it was a therapy session.

You’re about to embark on your debut headline tour, including newly added shows in Australia and New Zealand. What can fans expect from your live performances?

At every live performance, my goal is to place myself in the mindset I was in when each song was written. By doing this, I hope to embody the emotion and make each person in the crowd feel less alone.

Billboard recently named you Country Rookie of the Month, and CMT spotlighted you as a Next Up Now artist. How does it feel to receive that level of recognition so early in your career?

To be accepted by the music community is extremely rewarding. I think sometimes people have digital success and lack the acceptance of the industry itself… all in all, I am extremely honored to be recognized.

As a Nashville-based artist with roots in Oregon, how have your surroundings influenced your songwriting and the themes you explore in your music?

My physical location doesn’t play as large of a role as one may think. I use nostalgia and memories as primary drivers in my songwriting and very rarely rely on my current location to inspire my songs. I hope to go on a peaceful camping trip on the West Coast and write some music inspired by the Northwestern woods soon.

Interview: Marasi – Rhythm, Soul, and Global Groove

by the partae February 18, 2025
written by the partae

Your music blends Afro House and tech rhythms in a distinctive way. Can you tell us about your early inspirations and how they influenced your sound today?

My earliest inspiration came from my father’s vinyl collection, which spanned blues, rock, and disco from the ’60s and ’70s. That eclectic range of music taught me the importance of groove and melody—two elements I carry into my productions today. Later on, I discovered electronic music through late-night radio shows, which opened my eyes to the boundless creativity in dance music. Over time, I gravitated toward Afro House because of its organic, percussive energy, and I fused it with techy, modern rhythms to create a style that feels both soulful and forward-thinking.

How has your artistic evolution shaped the way you approach production and live performances?

I’ve learned to see production and performance as two sides of the same coin. Early on, I was very focused on the technical aspects—like perfecting drum patterns or layering synths—without always considering how these tracks would translate live. As my career progressed and I started playing bigger venues, I realized the importance of storytelling and dynamics in both my sets and productions. Now, when I produce, I’m already envisioning how the crowd might react, where the energy might peak, and how I can weave in melodic or vocal elements to create memorable moments on the dancefloor.

Being selected for Shazam’s Fast Forward 2025 list is a huge achievement. What does this recognition mean to you, and how do you think it will impact your career?

It’s an incredible honor and a significant milestone in my journey. Shazam has such a global presence, so being featured on their Fast Forward 2025 list instantly exposes my music to listeners who might not have found me otherwise. In terms of impact, I believe it can open doors to new collaborations, festival bookings, and a broader international fan base. Most importantly, it motivates me to keep experimenting and pushing the boundaries of my sound, knowing there’s an audience out there ready to embrace it.

In what ways do you think platforms like Shazam contribute to an artist’s global visibility and reach?

Platforms like Shazam act as a bridge between the artist and a global audience. When someone hears a track they like—whether it’s on the radio, in a club, or even in a café—they can immediately identify it and explore more of the artist’s music. This instant connection is crucial in an era where people discover music on the go. For emerging artists, it can be a game-changer, because Shazam’s data can lead to playlist placements, label interest, and media attention that might otherwise be difficult to secure.

You’ve gained support from industry heavyweights like Black Coffee, Solomun, and Laurent Garnier. How have their endorsements or advice influenced your journey?

Having the support of such iconic figures is both humbling and inspiring. When Solomun first played one of my tracks, it felt like a stamp of approval that pushed me to refine my craft even further. Black Coffee’s feedback has encouraged me to stay true to the Afro-inspired roots in my music, reminding me that authenticity resonates most strongly with audiences. While I haven’t had extensive direct communication with Laurent Garnier, seeing him acknowledge my music underscores the universal appeal of a well-crafted track. Each endorsement is a reminder that quality and passion can transcend borders and genres.

Have you had any memorable moments or collaborations with these legends that helped define your sound or career direction?

One standout moment was discovering, almost by accident, that Solomun was dropping my track during one of his sets. I came across a fan’s Instagram story and recognized my production in the background. It was a surreal realization—like seeing your work in a movie for the first time. I haven’t officially collaborated with Black Coffee or Laurent Garnier yet, but I’ve certainly been influenced by their styles. The emotional depth in Black Coffee’s sets and the pioneering spirit of Laurent Garnier continue to shape my own approach to music and performance.

You had a residency at Club Chinois in Ibiza and performed in over 25 countries in 2023. How has touring internationally influenced your sound and performance style?

Touring internationally has been a revelation. Playing in diverse locations—from Ibiza’s cutting-edge clubs to intimate spots in Kenya or bustling cities like Dubai—exposed me to different cultures, musical tastes, and crowd dynamics. This global perspective taught

me the importance of adaptability. I’ve learned to read the room and tweak my set to maintain energy and connection. In the studio, I now incorporate elements that resonate universally, whether it’s a vocal chant that sparks crowd participation or a bassline that compels everyone to dance, regardless of their musical background.

What have been some of the most unforgettable experiences or lessons from playing to such diverse audiences around the world?

One of my favorite memories is playing a sunset set in an open-air venue where the crowd spanned so many nationalities—everyone was united by the music. The lesson I took away is that a well-curated set can overcome language and cultural barriers. Another key takeaway is the power of spontaneity; sometimes the best moments happen when you read the crowd and shift gears on the fly. It’s those instances—where you feel an electric connection with the audience—that make all the hard work worthwhile.

Your 2024 single “Opera” made waves. How do you plan to build on that momentum with upcoming projects or collaborations?

“Opera” was a pivotal release for me—melding theatrical, melodic elements with a driving Afro House rhythm. The overwhelming response motivated me to expand the concept beyond the studio and into a full-scale event experience. We’re currently developing a tour under the Opera banner, incorporating immersive visuals, live performance elements, and special guest appearances. It’s a fusion of music, drama, and dance that we hope will resonate deeply with audiences across the globe, bringing the essence of Opera to life in an entirely new way.

As you continue breaking into new markets, do you see your sound evolving, or are there specific sonic directions you’re excited to explore?

Absolutely—evolution is key to staying relevant and inspired. I’m currently experimenting with more cinematic elements, layering orchestral strings and atmospheric textures over Afro-centric drums. There’s also a growing interest in bridging Afro House with other genres like progressive or even breaks, so I’m curious about how those crossovers might sound. Ultimately, I want to maintain the core essence of my music—emotional resonance and rhythmic drive—while embracing fresh ideas that keep listeners (and myself) excited.
