DMA’S WILL STREAM A PERFORMANCE FROM THE AMPHITHEATRE OF SPLENDOUR IN THE GRASS TOMORROW (4.30PM AEST)

by the partae July 23, 2020
written by the partae

Tomorrow, Fri 24 July, is the day DMA’S were supposed to stand in front of tens of thousands of music fans and perform at one of the world’s most iconic and loved festivals, Splendour In The Grass.

While unfortunately the festival is unable to go ahead due to COVID-19, we are thrilled to announce that DMA’S will stream a very special acoustic set from the amphitheatre at the home of the festival, North Byron Parklands. Fans will be able to watch the stream via the Splendour In The Grass and DMA’S Facebook pages, and DMA’S YouTube on Friday 24th July at 4:30PM AEST (sunset slot).

DMA’S are no strangers to Splendour In The Grass, having played the GW McLennan tent in 2014, and the Amphitheatre stage in both 2016, and 2018. 2020 would have been a triumphant return to a stage they hold dear, for a band who have been on a fast and steady trajectory since the release of their debut single ‘Delete’ in 2014, which earned them their debut Splendour spot that same year. Watch DMA’S perform ‘Delete’ during their 2018 set.

Produced by the team at Hype Republic, this beautiful performance is a bittersweet taste of what fans would have been treated to over the highly anticipated weekend.

DMA’S brilliant third studio album THE GLOW (released globally on Friday 10 July) debuted at #2 on the ARIA Album Chart, #4 on the UK and took out the #1 spot in Scotland. This huge accomplishment marks the highest chart positions to date for the band.

Twin Peaks have cancelled their upcoming Australian tour and will no longer appear at Boogie Festival.  Despite all efforts to push forward, the tour, which was originally scheduled to take place in April then pushed to October/November 2020, can no longer go ahead due to the uncertainty surrounding COVID-19. Refunds for all headline shows are available from the point of purchase.  Boogie Festival - rescheduled for October 30 - November 1, 2020 - is planning to proceed with a local lineup should restrictions allow at the time of the event. We won’t be rescheduling at this time, as the longevity of this situation remains unknown to us all.    This is a huge bummer for us— we’ve really loved our tours in Australia and were floored by the support on our last tour October 2018 — but we are absolutely certain this is the right decision to make.    Please: wear a mask and social distance. • One of Australia’s brightest pop prospects is fellow Brisbane muso Eves Karydas, who joins us this week to perform her brand new single ‘Complicated’

Each week on The Sound, we introduce you to a rising star in our ‘Introducing’ segment. This week, meet 18-year-old Sycco – aka Sasha McLeod, who just this month took out  an Unearthed Level Up Grants courtesy of triple j and saw spins on influential LA station KCRW.

‘I feel like we’ve all been waiting for a music show to come back on TV! Really looking forward to watching and very glad to be a part of it’ – Josh Teskey

‘I’m excited and honoured to be appearing with Paul Kelly on The Sound. Having grown up in the ‘70s, the idea of sitting in front of a colour telly on Sundays at 5.30 was an integral part of my alternative music education. Now we can all do it again! And to be playing this exquisite song by the great Mr K just makes it even more special.’ – Paul Grabowsky

‘I’m really looking forward to performing live on The Sound, it’s so fabulous to see live music back on the ABC again’ – James Reyne

‘If this show is one of the results of this difficult time, then it’s good that we can see a positive thing come out of it, for musicians and Australian audiences. Very happy to be involved.’ – Julia Stone

‘We are honoured to be a part of The Sound and can’t wait for you all to see it this weekend’ – San Cisco

‘I’m very excited to perform my new single ‘Complicated’ for the very first time, and grateful for the opportunity during these very strange times. Absolutely love the all-Aussie line up!’ – Eves Karydas

On social media, the verdict was unanimous – The Sound is must-watch TV!
‘This show is awesome!!!’

UK label Big Scary Monsters has announced a Virtual Popup store, which will open its doors at 4pm on 27th July, with ‘instore’ performances every day from illuminati hotties, Kevin Devine, We Were Promised Jetpacks, and Into It. Over It (see poster for full line up). The virtual store can be entered here on launch day, and will stock exclusive vinyl variants, rare test pressings and new merch, alongside interviews with Jamie Lenman, Delta Sleep and Martha and more.

Users will be able to click on sections of the store to reveal instores and live Q&As at relevant times. Activites include special live content exclusive to the store, such as a conversation between Chris Farren and Kevin Devine, live songs from ‘A Lull In Traffic’ from The Gloria Record, a very special live cover song from The Winter Passing, and a Q&A with Jamie Lenman to name a few.

The pop up aims to raise funds for Black Minds Matter UK and #saveourvenues, and there will also be a special t-shirt on sale with proceeds going towards these charities.

Talking about the store, label founder Kevin Douch said: “We absolutely love our popup shops. Having been to London, Cardiff, Glasgow and Brighton over the past couple of years, we decided there was only one possible destination for a summer like 2020; EVERYWHERE. The first ever BSM Virtual Popup shop provides all of the usual fun. We’ve got instores, talks, exclusive products, crazy discounts, test pressings and so much more. Our old friends Signature Brew are even providing the (mail order) beers! We can’t wait to open our online doors and see everyone next week.”

BEN HARPER AND RHIANNON GIDDENS COVER NICK DRAKE’S “BLACK EYED DOG”

by the partae July 22, 2020
written by the partae

Collaborating for the first time, Ben Harper and Rhiannon Giddens have released a new duet of the Nick Drake song “Black Eyed Dog”. Featuring Harper on lap steel and Giddens on banjo, listen to the plaintive track HERE.

“Rhiannon and I are both black purveyors of American roots music, and while this is not an anomaly, it is an exception within a subculture,” Harper explained. “We have unquestionably tapped into the same creative well of influence, carrying on the tradition through our own individual instincts and perspectives.”

“I’ve been hearing and hearing about Ben Harper for a long time, but had never gotten to meet him until recently at an event in LA and I was immediately struck by a kindred spirit,” Giddens added. “Didn’t have as much to do with the kind of music we play, although we share many, many commonalities as black folk playing roots music, but more to do with the spirit that we access when we play it. I felt that spirit in him right off and knew if we ever got the chance, we could make something beautiful together.”

Rhiannon Giddens is a celebrated artist who excavates the past to reveal truths about our present. A MacArthur “Genius Grant” recipient, Giddens has also been Grammy-nominated six times. Last year she was nominated for her collaboration with multi-instrumentalist Francesco Turrisi, there is no Other (2019), an album that is at once a condemnation of “othering” and a celebration of the spread of ideas, connectivity, and shared experience. In the past month she’s appeared on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert’s #playathome series, and performed an NPR Tiny Desk from home. She recently spoke to Rolling Stone at length about “Rewriting Country Music’s Racist History,” and was also included in VICE’s recent feature on marginalised voices in bluegrass music.

“I’ve always wanted to cover ‘Black Eyed Dog’, but the song was intimidating in its haunted perfection,” Harper continued. “Only through collaborating with Rhiannon would I have ever attempted it. When I step back from it, this collaboration should’ve happened long ago, but I’m thrilled that it’s finally here.”

Three-time GRAMMY Award winner Ben Harper is also working on a new album that is scheduled to come out later this year. He’s previously released 15 studio albums garnering Gold and Platinum certifications worldwide, including his latest No Mercy In This Land with revered blues legend Charlie Musselwhite. In May, Harper released the new single “Don’t Let Me Disappear”, featured in The New York Times’ The Playlist, which “is about the fine line between loneliness, isolation and invisibility, to where you can’t seem to find a way not to be hiding in plain sight,” Harper explained. The black and white video for the song features two modern dancers intertwining fluid and fragmented movements while Harper performs the song on acoustic guitar.

PRAISE FOR KUČKA

“Gorgeously soulful and shimmering”
FACT Magazine

“Real is a wonderfully opaque piece of digital soul”
Clash Music

“All these high profile collabs and “feats” might have given some listeners the misperception that KUČKA is a singer / top-liner only – but it couldn’t be further from the truth.”
Liveschool

“Her most magnetic song yet”
triple j

“her vocals and production levels are more sophisticated than ever before“
Fashion Journal

‘Voices’ (Hi This Is Flume)
Recording Academy GRAMMY Nominated

Perth-raised, LA-based producer and vocalist KUČKA today shares her latest single, ‘Contemplation’ via Soothsayer (ANZ) and LuckyMe (ROW). Listen and watch HERE.

On ‘Contemplation’, KUČKA again demonstrates her ability to construct soundscapes that are intimate but unnerving, alien, and soothing at the same time. Between her opaque vocals in the foreground and crackling white noise lingering in the background, crystalline synths interlace with one another as they pitter-patter around the mix, creating an illusory layer to lose yourself within. The effect is surreal: ‘Contemplation’ seems spacious, even as it envelops you. Lyrically, Lowther continues to dissect her own personal experiences with open and literal emotionality, providing the perfect counterweight to her shimmering backdrop. “Stronger than I knew I could be / Higher than I knew I could reach / Build it up, build it up, build it up,” she sings as propulsive beat ushers in the chorus.

Of the release KUČKA shares, “Contemplation is about the importance of giving yourself time away from the chaos. Sometimes we need a reminder that stillness is necessary in order to maintain balance both physically and mentally. It’s important to set aside time to practice this, in order to give space for self-reflection and intuitive thoughts to arise.”

Her first new music of 2020, ‘Contemplation’ comes off the back of a banner 2019, having released her first solo material in 3 years with the Flume-assisted ‘Drowning’ and its follow-up, the Nosaj Thing-co-produced ‘Real’, both of which drew praise from triple j, The FADER, FACT Magazine, Clash Music and more, and touring Australia for the first time since 2018 with Laneway Festival alongside the likes of The 1975, Charli XCX and Earl Sweatshirt among others.

‘Contemplation’ is out now via Soothsayer and LuckyMe.

As a seasoned musician, multi-instrumentalist and accomplished performer, Melbourne’s Nicholas Martyn has lent his complex drumming wizardry to some of Melbourne’s most beloved acts. Since 2014, the prolific songwriter, producer, vocalist and sole performer began creating his own unique blend of genre-defying percussive explorations under, Las Mar. Releasing an EP and an LP in his first two years and staying relatively quiet ever since Las Mar is finally back with new music and thrilled to present his latest psychedelic art-pop trip, ‘Weekend Repair’, taken from his forthcoming album to be released later in 2020. Out via Ditto today, the new single showcases Las Mar’s signature beat oddities beneath angelic yet urgent vocals, textured guitars and funk-driven basslines, in a frenetic gathering of organised chaos. Enveloped in a big chorus and even bigger finish, ‘Weekend Repair’s’ subtle rhythm shifts and deep grooves are as original and infectious as ever with lyrics paying homage to shedding skin, personal and collective growth and the ultimate search for survival in a rapidly shifting world. “I wrote this song about the moves we must make to survive in a rapidly changing world. It’s a song for wiping the slate clean (or life doing it for you) and being pushed into personal growth. It’s also about parting ways with obsolete ways of thinking, stagnant ideas or damaging relationships. To break a cycle takes force and will-power - Weekend Repair pays homage to the movements, and individuals, that must gather this force to succeed. Percussion heavy drumming and sharp guitars create the perfect undertow for exposed, urgent vocals. my usual polyrhythms are more subtle here in favour of a pumping, bass-driven momentum and a big final chorus.” - Las Mar Cutting his teeth in Melbourne’s thriving live scene led to working with some of Australia’s most highly regarded musicians such as Gotye, D.D Dumbo, Matt Corby, Nai Palm, Husky and Barney McAll. Nick was also a founding member of acclaimed outfit Clairy Browne & The Bangin’ Rackettes and has toured with them extensively throughout the US and Europe. In the midst of all this Nick was compelled to create a unique project, something to call “home”, a journey into his DIY recording of borrowed instruments and microphones, and fusing disparate influences like Sonic Youth, Aphex Twin, Cornelius and Miles Davis into one artistic voice. Thus, Las Mar was born. From his first release, Las Mar has continued to forge a completely singular sound, funnelling post-rock epicness, Afrobeat funkiness, twisted beats and general trippiness into songs you can hold on to and live improvisations you wish you could bottle up for a rainy day. Now the epic live performer is thrilled to announce a specially recorded performance Live at The Grove airing online Thursday 23 July on YouTube. You won’t want to miss it.   Las Mar - Live at The Grove Airing: Thursday 23 July Time: 6pm Where: The Grove Youtube The Grove Facebook: www.facebook.com/livethegrove/ ‘Weekend Repair’ is out now via Ditto Spotify / Apple Music / iTunes / Bandcamp   Weekend Repair Credits: Written, recorded and performed by Nicholas Martyn Mixed and mastered by Simon Russell Artwork by Nicholas Martyn Las Mar Website Las Mar Facebook Las Mar Instagram Las Mar Spotify

Where are you currently based and what is the music scene like there?  Jordan: Auckland, full of talent. Almost everyone is making some sort of music, so there is always a decent amount of inspiration around.  Billy: Melbourne, the music scene here is really strong, especially the hip-hop scene.  Grateful to have worked with some of the best acts. How did you first get into music?  Billy: Ironically I failed all my music classes in school but turned out really enjoy it in uni. Meeting so many great artists there really inspired me to give it a try. Jordan: Primary school, I played the trumpet for the school orchestra. From there I just kept picking up new instruments, sounds and ideas. How did Gated Community form?  Jordan: Long time school friends. We both ended up making tracks and decided it would be dope to link up for a song, titled "Low Life". From there we just kept getting better and better, and found we make a great team when working together. What's been happening recently and has COVID19 impacted your workflow?  Billy: My workflow has been relatively the same,  although there is less for me to write about since I’m not outside as much.  Been pouring most of my music time into writing and producing my album. Jordan and I work remotely about 90% of the time anyway so we’re still able to work on the same amount of bangers as usual in lockdown. Jordan: Lots of life adjustments. Figuring out a way to do what I love and also make a living.  It has been a busy year! Solo projects are on the way, along with multiple collab projects.  Covid-19 may have impacted my job, but caused a lot more tracks to be made.  Your new single 'Lay Low and Snitch' will be out on August 21, what influenced the sound and songwriting for this track?  Jordan: I had just finished work and noticed Billy had sent me a new track he was working on. I was pretty amped up, and his flow / verse was just incredible. I wrote the verse in all caps to remind my self to go hard.  Billy: For me the beat just brought out a side of me I don’t think I see often enough, I just had the wackiest sh*t on my mind and wanted to rap it haha. How did you go about writing Lay Low and Snitch? Billy: I was blasting the beat on my speakers and ended up writing my verse way faster than I usually write one. I was so keen to record it, I knew Jordan would be a perfect fit for the track so I sent it to him as soon as I recorded. Jordan: Locked in the studio, and full of energy. I wanted to maintain the flow from our previous collab whilst delivering a fresh sound. (also same answer as question above)  Where and when did you record and who with?  Jordan: My home Studio in Auckland. I recorded at about 1AM with my friend and frequent collaborator, Wizard of Oz.  Billy: I think we did this track back in May.  I was just home, alone in my room in the afternoon working on my verse and hook. Who are you listening to at the moment?  Billy: I’ve been listening to Mac Miller’s new album so much, absolutely love it.  I’ve had a lot of James Blake on repeat too. Jordan: Logic, absolutely too excited for his new and last album, "No Pressure".  Kendrick Lamar has always been my top favourite though.  Recently I have been listening to more ambient music for relaxation.  What do you like to do away from music?  Jordan: Traveling and road trips, it's good to get away. I find new environments can help with my creative process.  Billy: I’ve definitely been less adventurous due to lockdown haha so for me I’ve just been chilling in quarantine with my girlfriend, playing Mario Kart and binging The Office. What's planned for the remainder of 2020?  Billy: Trying to experience as much as I can with the circumstances being what they are while keeping safe of course.  Gonna be pumping out a single every month until December as well. Jordan: Honestly just a lot of releases, more recordings and a general good time.  Hoping to get back to Australia to see the boy Billy for some more recording.  Favourite food and place to hangout?  Jordan: The beer spot Whangaparaoa, honestly dope.  Burgers and beer, what else do I need? Billy: There’s a Taco Bell near my new place so that’s been the spot at the moment haha. https://www.facebook.com/gatedcommunitymusic/ https://www.instagram.com/gatedfuckingcommunity/

We both ended up making tracks and decided it would be dope to link up for a song, titled “Low Life”. From there we just kept getting better and better, and found we make a great team when working together.

What’s been happening recently and has COVID19 impacted your workflow?

Billy: My workflow has been relatively the same,

although there is less for me to write about since I’m not outside as much.

Your new single ‘Lay Low and Snitch’ will be out on August 21, what influenced the sound and songwriting for this track?

(also same answer as question above)

Where and when did you record and who with?

Jordan: My home Studio in Auckland. I recorded at about 1AM with my friend and frequent collaborator, Wizard of Oz.

Billy: I think we did this track back in May.

I was just home, alone in my room in the afternoon working on my verse and hook.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

Billy: I’ve been listening to Mac Miller’s new album so much, absolutely love it.

I’ve had a lot of James Blake on repeat too.

Jordan: Logic, absolutely too excited for his new and last album, “No Pressure”.

Kendrick Lamar has always been my top favourite though.

Recently I have been listening to more ambient music for relaxation.

What do you like to do away from music?

Jordan: Traveling and road trips, it’s good to get away. I find new environments can help with my creative process.

Billy: I’ve definitely been less adventurous due to lockdown haha so for me I’ve just been chilling in quarantine with my girlfriend, playing Mario Kart and binging The Office.

What’s planned for the remainder of 2020?

Billy: Trying to experience as much as I can with the circumstances being what they are while keeping safe of course.

Gonna be pumping out a single every month until December as well.

Jordan: Honestly just a lot of releases, more recordings and a general good time.

Hoping to get back to Australia to see the boy Billy for some more recording.

Favourite food and place to hangout?

Jordan: The beer spot Whangaparaoa, honestly dope.

Burgers and beer, what else do I need?

Billy: There’s a Taco Bell near my new place so that’s been the spot at the moment haha.

NEW VIDEO: Bask in the exquisiteness of UK artist Alex Lleo in the stirring live video for new single ‘4:05’

by the partae July 20, 2020
written by the partae

Earlier this month, soulful UK singer songwriter, Alex Lleo presented the breathtaking single ‘4:05’, his first new material since 2018’s Park Studios, JQ and Emanate EPs. A nomadic globe-trotter, Alex has spent a lot of his music career seeking inspiration on the road less travelled, with his endeavours taking him from Norway to Scotland, and all corners of the UK and Europe; each trip harvesting inspiration for any number of songs aching to be written. One such occasion was a short trip to the coast for a change of scenery, whereby Lleo waited for the 4:05 train which was to become the catalyst for his stunning new single as well as a bunch of new tracks yet to be released.

In lieu of a live gig, Alex Lleo is thrilled to present a special stripped back performance of the single in his new video for ‘4:05’ as premiered by BBC last week for BBC Music Introducing in the West Midlands. Recorded in Birmingham at Park Studios JQ and directed by Owain Ulyet, the clip is the closest we’re going to get to an Alex Lleo live show in the foreseeable future. The video offers a perfect encapsulation of the intimate and raw energy of this immense international talent, centering Lleo’s captivating vocals with a minimalist setup that allows space for each note to linger a little while longer.

“Park Studio just feels like home base for me. Owned and operated by my good friend Ali, positioned in a 200+ year-old building that was once used to house many of the country’s most valuable gems (hence the name, gem building), the place just oozes character. Although these songs found their birthplace in Brooklyn, once back on home soil, this felt like the obvious place to tackle them alone!” – Alex Lleo

Recorded over five weeks at a small studio in Brooklyn last year, ‘4:05’ and the songs to follow were tracked with a full six-piece band of seasoned musicians including Quinn Devlin, Zach Calluori, Andy Shimm, Jordan Wolff, Eli Aleinikoff, Sarah Ciceroand and producer, Sahil Ansari. Be sure to keep an ear to the ground for more to come from Alex Lleo in the not too distant future.

DMA’S CRITICALLY ACCLAIMED THIRD ALBUM THE GLOW DEBUTS AT #2 IN AUSTRALIA, #4 IN THE UK & #1 IN SCOTLAND + UNPLUGGED & INTIMATE TOUR STARTS NEXT WEEK

8.5/10 “The Glow isn’t just another album in the band’s discography. It sounds like a coming of age, an album that is limitless in its imagination and one that defies genre limitations..The Glow combines different musical styles that showcases the Australian trio at their very best.” – The Line Of Best Fit

4/5 “Every moment of ‘The Glow’ sees the band step up…It’s not just the music that’s on another level: lyrically, ‘The Glow’ sees DMA’S at their most vulnerable, most excitable and most inspiring…‘The Glow’ is a hyper-charged record of dance and decadence. A bold step forward that sees DMA’S coming into their own.” – NME

I OH YOU are so stoked to announce that DMA’S brilliant third studio album THE GLOW (released globally on Friday 10 July) has debuted at #2 on the ARIA Album Chart, #4 on the UK and took out the #1 spot in Scotland. This huge accomplishment marks the highest chart positions to date for the band.

This fantastic result is a testament to the band’s unwavering vision to write an album that took their sound to a new level and to new ears, across the world. Recorded and mixed by multi-Grammy Award winning producer Stuart Price (The Killers, New Order, Madonna) at the historic Westlake Recording Studios in Hollywood, THE GLOW is a step up for the band in every sense. With two top #10 ARIA albums, 4 x ARIA-nominations, and multiple ARIA Platinum and ARIA Gold singles already under their belt, THE GLOW marks a leap forward for the band and establishes themselves as a household name both here and in the UK.

These outstanding chart positions come off the back of a phenomenal year for DMA’S, which saw the band play a sold-out show at London’s iconic 5,000 capacity O2 Academy Brixton back in March, which in a testament to the band’s ability to adapt to a new world and find fresh and exciting ways to engage with fans, they were able to share the record-breaking O2 Academy Brixton show via a digital stream on their Facebook and YouTube with approximately 50 thousand viewers tuning in. Watch ‘Silver (Live from O2 Academy Brixton)’ here.

DMA’S have garnered new fans from near and far recently, with their special isolation versions of ‘Lay Down’ and ‘The Glow’, their performance on the ANZAC Day special – Music From The Home Front where they covered the Crowded House classic ‘Better Be Home Soon’, taking part in the Victorian Government’s The State Of Music performing their hit single ‘The Glow’, gracing Australia’s television screens on Saturday 11th July with a DMA’S TV special on Channel 9, and creating a heart-warming fan video for their hugely loved song ‘Silver’ by compiling live footage shot and sent to them from their fans from around the globe.

Over the weekend, the band took part in the ABC’s new live music series The Sound (alongside the likes of Nick Cave, Hunters & Collectors and BENEE), where they performed their latest single ‘Criminals’.

To celebrate the release of THE GLOW, DMA’S announced an intimate run of stripped-back shows at Sydney’s Factory Theatre, which sold out in minutes. In reply to overwhelming fan requests to play in Brisbane, the Sydney trio made the decision to extend their ‘Unplugged & Intimate’ tour, and confirmed four concerts at The Tivoli in Brisbane on Saturday 29 August and Sunday 30 August, which as Sydney before them, sold out almost instantly.

These intimate shows, in line with updated regulations around live entertainment, will see the band play to limited capacity crowds, with the multiple shows giving more fans a chance to be some of the first in the world to hear their new material live for the very first time.

DMA’S are a true story of triumph, a band that continue to push the boundaries of their creative output, and the success of THE GLOW to date is a true testament to a band that are showing no sign of slowing down.

On July 24th, leading Madrid artist Danny Serrano is back with a second single from his forthcoming Craft album. Entitled The Future, it follows on from the first single in fine style.  This fantastic new album was created in Serrano's Kitchen, the artist's own recording studio and label. After having worked for big labels such as Desolat, Truesoul, Circus Recordings, Saved Records and more over many years, the album finds Danny switching up his sound and broadening his horizons with new depth. It shows he has grown in the studio and is not only pigeonholed as a tech house artist. Instead he is someone who can do real melody, work with vocals, bring warm grooves and take you on a trip on the dance floor.  Second single The Future is an atmospheric track with dark, loopy drums. The chattery claps drive it along and spectacular synths explode out of the mix to bring real energy and colour, This one is sure to get hands in the air and is another fine single as well as top teaser before the full album.  Third single Bimba will follow soon and ensure that this summer, the unique Danny Serrano sound is impossible to escape. https://www.residentadvisor.net/dj/dannyserrano  https://soundcloud.com/dannyserrano https://www.facebook.com/search/top/?q=Danny%20Serrano

Ian Skelly - Jokerman OUT NOW From the album, Drifters Skyline, released Fri 31 July 2020 A plea for salvation sung through a sunny smile, Jokerman is the second, upbeat summer single to be released from Ian Skelly’s forthcoming album, Drifters Skyline. Promising to open the door to a bright world of Cali-influenced alt-folk, comic-strip country and fuzzy blues, the album now ‘waterfalls’ its way into the world one, digital track each day until to its full, digital and vinyl-only release on Fri 31 July 2020.   Working for only the second time as a solo artist, The Coral’s drummer and occasional co-conspirator in Serpent Power headed out to Berlin in 2019 with a tailwind of creativity guiding him. An easy-going, collaborative atmosphere in the company of producer and guitarist/friend, Paul McKinnell, with Paul Pilot on mixing and recording duties, helped twelve new songs to flow effortlessly to tape in just one, happy week in the German capital.   Calling on the Jokerman to provide help on a day of despair, the single reveals a fissure of vulnerability and reflection on an album otherwise written specifically for the purposes of joy and escape. Written during a period Skelly associates with personal loss, he determinedly set out to craft a breezy, sonic antidote to what he was going through. Hitting on the formula to leave painful realities at the door, songs like Jokerman and the album’s first single, Captain Caveman, offer ample escape through their airy abandon and blurred lyrical outlines. Skelly says: “To me, pouring your sad heart out on a song is self-indulgent. When I am feeling down, I just put on T-Rex really loud and escape. I couldn’t write any sad songs when I was working on ‘Drifters Skyline’, it just had to be upbeat. Friends and family really liked ‘Jokerman’ from the start, so it seemed a good vibe. Then, when we recorded it, the entire process turned out to be great fun. It felt exciting. What should have been work in the studio turned out to be a jolly.”   The release of Drifters Skyline accompanies more exclusive artwork from Skelly, who, as a prolific artist, has illustrated numerous of his own and The Coral’s album projects, including promotional videos, all featuring his darkly comic, gonzo collage work as well as photography and drawing. In line with the gradual release via digital and streaming sites, Skelly’s social media channels will premiere new artwork, animated by animator and film maker, Dom Foster, every day until the album is available in full.   A founder member of The Coral, releasing eight studio albums since their self-titled debut album in 2002, Skelly released his first solo album, Cut From A Star in 2012. Together with former Zutons guitarist, now a full-time member of The Coral, Paul Molloy, Skelly has released two, critically acclaimed albums as Serpent Power, including 2017’s Electric Looneyland. DAVID GUETTA & MORTEN TAKE THEIR FUTURE RAVE COLLABORATION TO THE NEXT LEVEL WITH THE RELEASE OF THEIR ‘NEW RAVE’ EP

by the partae July 19, 2020
written by the partae

Since their first collaboration, David Guetta and MORTEN’s partnership has yielded a string of co-productions that have gained huge momentum within the electronic dance music scene and beyond. With more than 110 million combined streams so far, the pair now unveil their new four-track EP ‘New Rave’.

David Guetta and MORTEN’s innovative records reflect their vision for the future of electronic dance music and have been inspired by a desire to unite mainstage and underground sounds. Their project titled ‘Future Rave’ has swooped through the industry, receiving praise from DJs and fans alike. Track after track, the buzz around their releases just grows bigger and more exciting each time, and this energy has led to the new EP out today.

‘A year ago I started to make music with my friend Morten’, says David Guetta. ‘I felt like there was a choice between underground which was cool but maybe more adapted to clubs rather than festivals, or edm that was still killing the dancefloor but was sounding the same for the last 4 years and was not satisfying anymore. We wanted to make music that would be sexy, have the cool factor of techno, the energy of edm and why not the emotion of trance. We wanted to make quality dance music with zero compromises and give a lot of attention to finding new sonics. We wanted to make music people have never heard before. Almost one year later and many producers started to make music in the same style, our music is becoming a movement and DJs call it Future Rave.’

‘Together we have started a sound that has later become a “Movement”‘, says MORTEN. ‘We call it Future Rave! With each release the sound has evolved even further and now a year after we started, this EP feels like a natural next step. After months in the studio, I’m so excited to finally share it. David’s experience with songwriting and his way of writing melodies is very unique and something I learn from every day.’

Consisting of four new tracks “Kill Me Slow”, “Nothing”, “Bombardment”, and “Odyssey”, the EP continues their signature sound which is influenced by techno, is a little dark but with a huge sonic range. Their respected record collection includes “Never Be Alone feat Aloe Blacc”, “Make It To Heaven” with Raye, The tribute remix of Avicci’s “Heaven” and “Detroit 3 AM”.

In April, David Guetta launched ‘United At Home’, a charity live-stream event series which has since raised over $1.2 million USD for charities around the world in the wake of COVID-19. The two record-breaking shows in Miami and New York were collectively viewed over 50 million times.

MAYA JANE COLES – ‘WOULD YOU KILL (4 ME)?’ EP
OUT NOW

Following on from her dancefloor weapon ‘Run to You’ which dominated charts and playlists and featured the velvety vocals of Claudia Kane, Maya Jane Coles resumes a club focus with the three-track ‘Would You Kill (4 Me)?’ EP.

Led by the EP’s title track, the British-Japanese producer selectively draws from her trademark palette, uncompromising on the production detail and matched with ever-vibrant, sound system rattling house grooves.

‘Sweet Luv’ emphasizes why Maya Jane Coles’ signature has been one of the most influential in modern dance music, with warm vocal samples referencing back to many of her formative releases that made such an impact.

Radiating with dynamic melancholy, ‘Piano Magic’ proves that despite her never-ending exploration of genres and exciting collaborative experimentation, Coles has equally mastered restraint and the perfection in enduring consistency.

INNER CITY RELEASE THEIR FIRST ALBUM IN 30 YEARS, COLLABORATING WITH IDRIS ELBA ON THE TITLE TRACK.

by the partae July 19, 2020
written by the partae

The album opens with the powerful ‘We All Move Together’, featuring a monologue spoken by Idris Elba.

A title that means more now than ever, ‘We All Move Together’ represents the uplifting love and connection that music brings to Kevin Saunderson’s life, the Inner City group, and the rest of the world.

In their continuous quest to uplift people through the power of music, Kevin Saunderson, Dantiez Saunderson and vocalist Steffanie Christi’an delve into the new decade with the release of their first studio album together under a new formation, and the first released under Inner City for almost 30 years.

We All Move Together draws on Kevin Saunderson’s consistent drive to elevate, which has been present in him since he experienced the inspirational Paradise Garage in New York aged 17. A constant influence in his productions ever since, and a source which laid Inner City as a foundational group to lift spirits high.

The Inner City project fully relaunched in Spring 2019, with Kevin, Dantiez and Steffanie creating a major buzz across the globe. The trio treated both new and existing fans to fresh and exciting new music taken from We Move Together which proved to be the ultimate road test. The tour included headlining Kala Festival and shows at Glastonbury, Lost Village Festival, Electrico Festival, Moovin Festival, Three Mills Island, and Castlefield Bowl.

I Need Your Love, Save Me, and Living A Dream not only resonated with the fans during the live show, but also across the airwaves with Annie Mac, MistaJam, Danny Howard, Ana Matronic and Lauren Laverne all supporting the new wave of Inner City on their BBC shows.

After 18 months of studio sessions between touring, We Move Together is finally ready for full release. Kicking off strong with the eponymous opening track that features very special guest Idris Elba, speaking words of positive messages that continue to purvey through the rest of the album, which also includes guest vocals from Detroiter – ZebrA OctobrA.

Track List
We All Move Together – Inner City & Idris Elba
