BIGSOUND moves to a free virtual event for 2020!

DOUBLING DOWN ON COMMUNITY, SURVIVAL AND RE-FUTURING
With ongoing COVID-19 restrictions and domestic border closures, BIGSOUND 2020 will now move to be a free virtual event, allowing and creating new opportunities for Australian artists and industry to connect with each other and the international music community from their own homes and workspaces.
Connecting digitally on Wednesday 21 and Thursday 22 October, BIGSOUND 2020 will focus on three pillars of community, survival, and re-futuring, building on its 18-year history of bringing music, art and business together in a new conference program custom-built for the challenges and awakenings that 2020 has delivered.
“BIGSOUND has always been about bringing our business and arts community together and while we were hopeful of being in our spiritual home in the Fortitude Valley live music precinct, 2020 has made other arrangements,” said QMusic CEO Angela Samut.

“It has never been more important for the Australian industry to come together to focus on survival and re-futuring with a program that offers a mainstream conference program, professional development and mental health activities as well as the introduction of The BIGSOUND 50.”
Despite the unfortunate suspension of live showcases, BIGSOUND Festival co-programmers Dom Miller and Ruby-Jean McCabe, alongside First Nations Programmer Alethea Beetson, will still select the best artist applications to spotlight the next crop of emerging Australian music talent to become The BIGSOUND50. The event will double down on its role in shining a global spotlight on the artists of tomorrow and sharing them with the wider music industry to further expand audiences and connect them with potential business relationships.
As well as significant coverage across BIGSOUND and its official online media and playlists, the artists will receive one-on-ones with industry mentors, online meetings with industry professionals, and opportunities to connect with relevant delegates both during and after BIGSOUND in a unique program to help assist their artist growth, career goals, and potential future pathways. The BIGSOUND50 artists will also get first priority application access for BIGSOUND 2021, giving special consideration for attendance and live performing at next year’s event as the industry moves towards a new normal.
The full BIGSOUND program will be released in late September, under the care of Creative Director Janne Scott, Conference Programmer Tom Larkin, and First Nations Producer and Programmer Alethea Beetson.
The innovative BIGSOUND 2020 virtual program of keynote addresses, online workshops, panels and discussions will explore the serious industrial needs of the business of music, bringing together key players to plot our immediate survival, while taking this unique opportunity in history to have the necessary discussions about re-futuring the building blocks on which we operate.
BIGSOUND will have big conversations, from the new commercial realities through to the mental and physical health of industry participants. From equity of revenue to equity of opportunity, from respect for business through to respect for the community on which it’s built, BIGSOUND will ask the questions and prompt the discussions that need to be had to build a strong industry that will walk us forward into the next decade.
BIGSOUND will again feature First Nations House in partnership with Spotify (this year virtually) providing a poignant and important program of domestic and international delegates discussing the future of the music industry, creating virtual performance opportunities and offering valuable connections to those across the music industry from a First Nations perspective.
“BIGSOUND 2019 saw the largest cohort of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists showcasing at BIGSOUND,” said First Nations programmer Alethea Beetson.

“With the move to a virtual platform, we have the potential to showcase First Nations artists throughout the whole year; have the long-term Indigenous led conversations required to dismantle and change the music industry; and continue the work of those who have gone before us in building the sovereign music sector.”

“Working with Spotify, we are able to give more space to First Nations artists from these lands, and also continue our collaborations with our First Nations relatives across the oceans – in particular Aotearoa (New Zealand) and Turtle Island (Canada).”
Delegates who purchased a ticket to the BIGSOUND physical event will receive a full refund with free digital registrations open from today at www.bigsound.org.au. The full BIGSOUND delegate portal will be open for registrants from the end of September for networking and exclusive content.
BIGSOUND thanks the ongoing support of our partners: Australia Council for the Arts, Queensland Government through Arts Queensland, Tourism and Events Queensland, triple j, Spotify, Oztix, APRA AMCOS and Levi’s®.
BIGSOUND 2020 won’t have a physical presence this year, but it will deliver on the promise it has made to the music community for 18 years. This was not the year anyone expected, but BIGSOUND will continue to deliver for artists, be the place of the big discussions for industry, and this year be front and centre in bringing the community together at a time that has never been more important.

Free virtual delegate passes are available now from BIGSOUND.org.au

Sydney’s Triple One today share their latest single ‘Salina’, the second glimpse of their feverishly-anticipated debut album Panic Force, due for release this October. Watch and listen HERE.

With crunching guitars, skittering trap drums, emo-inflected vocals, and a falling, crystal-clear melody, ‘Salina’ recalls the group’s earliest experiments in genre and texture. Boasting sharp production and a wealth of hooks, ‘Salina’ blows the Triple One sound up to the most refined degree of pop prowess yet, as they ready their debut album for release. Touching on themes of feeling lost and aimless underneath the weight of life’s difficult choices, the single paints an evocative portrait of long, lonely nights spent with indecision, regret, and overthinking swirling around in the head; a devil on one shoulder, an angel on the other. In doing so, it demonstrates once more why the group’s emotional acuity cuts so deep: formidable bars delivered with venom and open-hearted honesty.

Vocalist Marty Bugatti shares that “Salina is about heartbreak and how it often leads to self-destructive behaviour. It’s also about trying really hard but never quite reaching your own expectations and then taking it out on other people because you can’t admit your own wrongs”, while Lil Dijon describes the track as being about “a battle of choices, and in the consequences when the choices are made.”

The release of Triple One’s long-awaited debut LP follows three EPs and a torrent of standalone singles that have catapulted the foursome from underground buzz act to garnering national and international acclaim, including lead single ‘Loverose‘, their ARIA Gold-certified mental health anthem ‘Butter‘ and radio favourites ‘So Easy‘ and ‘Handyman‘. Triple One‘s notoriously chaotic live gigs include a sold-out national tour in 2019, and show-stealing sets at Listen Out, Hidden, and Falls Festival. Along the way, they’ve impressed and surprised with their insatiable, all-consuming appetite to continuously venture into uncharted artistic terrain, and a rebellious desire to constantly fold new sounds and textures into their brand of unbounded, unclassifiable hip-hop.

Panic Force pushes that sonic envelope even further, offering the chance to watch one of Australian hip hop’s most versatile outfits apply themselves to a full-length project. Traversing thrilling peaks and pitch-black lows, Panic Force is a triumph of raw reflection, acknowledging our flaws and all the things that ultimately make us human. Set against the backdrop of a planet in physical and moral decay, Triple One’s debut sees the foursome deliver 12 tracks that highlight their signature diversity while also pushing them, lyrically, conceptually, and sonically, into new territory, exploring themes of relationships and escape, temptation, the hubris of man and much more.

“A poignant one from Ben that gives itself to you” Declan Byrne, triple j Home n’ Hosed Today, Melbourne songwriter and producer Ben Alpine returns with his second single ‘Wendouree’. Arriving on the cusp of springtime, ‘Wendouree’ sees the artist lean into sun-drenched alt-pop, brimming with jangly guitars, effervescent synth bursts and organic electronica samples. Immediately setting the tone with its kaleidoscopic sonic palette, ‘Wendouree’ is an exploration in capturing the momentary joy of the present. With its sound tinged in blissful psychedelia, the undulating nature of the track flows effortlessly between placid verses, cascading instrumental layers and infectious harmonies. Allowing the track to build and unfurl with rippling vibrancy, the track shifts gears towards a sparkling finale before receding into an ambient outro submersed in airy tones and soft textures. Speaking of the track, Ben shares: "The main idea is in the line ‘one moment never meant a thing’, referring to those relationships, experiences or situations in your life that, at one point, meant everything to you and you never wanted to lose them. But times have inevitably changed since then and you hold on to different experiences now, and perhaps you will go through that cycle with the stage of your life you're currently in. I think that can be both sobering and comforting in a way, that nothing in your life is ever going to be the way it is right now, and how our perception of our own memories shifts and changes." Following his well-received debut single ‘All In Your Stride’, ‘Wendouree’ is the next exciting chapter in Ben Alpine’s discography. While sharing the sunshine-laced DNA of its predecessor, the single sees Ben broaden his eclectic range, drawing from an array of inspirations from The Japanese House to Hippo Campus. While synthesising these influences, Ben’s experience in former indie electronica act Echo Mono and numerous SoundCloud production aliases sees him maintain an inward focus in his songwriting approach. With a creative output so far showcasing his colourful alt-pop sensibility through an introspective lens, Ben continues to affirm himself as one to watch closely in 2020. https://www.facebook.com/benalpine.au https://www.instagram.com/benalpine/

Where are you currently based? West Leederville in Perth. I have a small home studio where I write and record and the band rehearse there.  What's been happening recently and how has your Covid experience been so far? Well we’ve just started to rehearse more because shows are happening again over here so we’ve just been dusting off the saddles. The covid thing didn’t really affect me that much because I don’t really have a life anyway. I’m always in my music room. Business as usual really.  Your new single 'The Reason' is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting? The funny thing is when you release a song it takes ages to get to that point and was usually written years ago. So I don’t recall what influenced that particular song. I don’t think it would have been anything specific.  How did you go about writing the track? I think I had the main synth hook and chord progression laying around for a little while and then I kinda had a breakthrough with the vocal delivery and then it all just flowed after that. I don’t remember it being a hard song to work out.  Where and when did you record and who with? It was recorded at the start of the year at Blackbird Studios with Dave Parkin. I also recorded some parts at my place.  What programs/equipment did you use? I use Logic. So I will usually have a demo done and then we go into the studio and redo some, or all of it again. I programmed the drum beat you hear at the start in Logic. Then Jamie came in and laid down the live drums. I think the synths were combination of soft synths and a Roland Juno. I used my Telecaster guitar but I can’t remember the amp we used. We use all sorts of equipment I can’t keep track.  Who are you listening to at the moment? Bob Dylan  What do you like to do away from music? I like to play tennis  What's planned for 2020?  More live shows. We will have a video for The Reason coming out soon that we’ve been recording at my place also. I think we might go back into the studio before the end of the year to record more songs that will probably come out in two years time where I get asked questions about them that I can’t remember the answers for. I have a Christmas song that I’ve had around for a long time that I wanna record. Maybe get around to doing that.  Favourite food and place to hangout? Probably Mexican food. Where are you currently based?

West Leederville in Perth. I have a small home studio where I write and record and the band rehearse there.

What’s been happening recently and how has your Covid experience been so far?

Well we’ve just started to rehearse more because shows are happening again over here so we’ve just been dusting off the saddles. The covid thing didn’t really affect me that much because I don’t really have a life anyway. I’m always in my music room. Business as usual really.

Your new single ‘The Reason’ is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting?

The funny thing is when you release a song it takes ages to get to that point and was usually written years ago. So I don’t recall what influenced that particular song. I don’t think it would have been anything specific.

MICRA RETURN WITH NEW SINGLE & VIDEO ‘UNDER MY SKIN’ + ANNOUNCE SHOWS FOR NSW

by the partae September 8, 2020
written by the partae
“It’s got depth, it’s got drive, it’s got some magic dust sprinkled on top”
– Richard Kingsmill on ‘Fuzz Captain’, triple j

“Shimmering swathes of synth and lush guitar tones bring to mind the psychedelic tendencies of fellow Aussies Tame Impala, whilst the hushed vocal of Kafedjiyska conjures a dreamily lucid air that is wholly entrancing” – The Line of Best Fit

“Gorgeous noise pop that isn’t afraid to bleed into the red,” – Clash Magazine

“Ariel Pink and Tame Impala thrown in for a mish-mash of psych- and dream-pop you’ll get lost in” – Pilerats

Micra, Sydney’s spellbinding dream-pop outfit, today release their exciting new single ‘Under My Skin’ via Liberation Records. Premiering via Clash Magazine as their Track of the Day, ‘Under My Skin’ comes with the announcement of upcoming shows in Sydney and Wollongong.

Their first release since supporting Lime Cordiale on the band’s recent national tour, ‘Under My Skin’ boasts diverse influences, marrying the underwater psych grooves of Unknown Mortal Orchestra with the dreamy vocals of Beach House. Weaving dark lyrics and melodies with looping synths and production techniques, ‘Under My Skin’ proves Micra are more than the sum of their parts as it explores the idea of “learning to be comfortable with being uncomfortable.”

“It’s the realisation that everything that you feel happens under the skin (and) the fixation of time passing, which I tend to focus on a little too much” explains the band’s singer Ivana Kafedjiyska. “All these discomforts and thoughts are intimate sensations under the skin. Sometimes you have to sit in a feeling and let go only by letting it in.”

The track arrives complete with a beguiling music video by Jessica Long and features serene imagery of the band surrounded by vast desert landscapes and the setting sun. As the clip unfurls, the psychedelic undertones of the track surface and what was once tranquil becomes obscured.

‘Under My Skin’ follows the release of previous singles ‘Chemical Freedom’ and ‘Fuzz Captain’. The dreamy ‘Fuzz Captain’ received adds to triple j unearthed and FBi Radio as well as profiling by tastemakers The Line of Best Fit and Clash Magazine.

Micra are a sonic experiment from Bulgarian born and raised singer/guitarist Ivana Kafedjiyska and Australian guitarist/producer Robbie Cain, who met by serendipitous fortune at an Unknown Mortal Orchestra show after the ticketing Gods coincidentally sat them next to each other. That chance meeting blossomed into a musical kinship which, after months of jamming in a friend’s Sydney basement, led to the formation of Micra. After wooing industry at last year’s BIGSOUND, Micra went on to perform alongside Tyler, The Creator and RÜFÜS DU SOL at Beyond The Valley as well as recently supporting Lime Cordiale on six sold out shows across Australia.

With much more music to come, 2020 is sure to be an exciting year for the duo.

Miss Emilia

written by the partae
Where are you currently based?
I am currently based in Naarm (Melbourne), Australia, but I have Russian/Polish/Jewish roots.

How did you first start playing music?
I was lucky enough to come from an extremely musical family, my mother studied music in the Russian Conservatory of Music, and I grew up surrounded by a music school. My first piano lesson was when I was three – and I now teach piano myself, and I was apparently singing and making up little songs from the moment I could speak!

How has your COVID experience been?
My days have mostly been filled with online teaching, cooking new plant-based recipes, online doing emails, marketing and PR or composing new music! There has been a small positive amongst the the trying COVID time, I’ve had time to slow down a bit. Before I was doing 2 – 5 gigs a week, amongst teaching and managing multiple music businesses, so I’ve been appreciating the slower pace recently.

What’s been happening recently?
This is a very trying time for everyone around the world, and I’m very lucky to have a secure day job as a music teacher and a studio space I can lose myself in writing and producing new music. Along with this new release, there are a few already on the back-burner ready to be released soon as well.

You’ve just released your new single ‘Woman With Needs’ what influenced the sound and songwriting?
I would say the largest influence for this track’s sound was going for that ‘old-school soul’ sound that I adore, in particular Etta James and Aretha Franklin. My songwriting is in a constant state of change, recently I’ve been writing more nostalgic soul music, since that’s the music that really speaks to me and is infectious to sing.

Where and when did you record/produce and who with?
This track, alongside a catalogue of yet-to-be-released music, has been through a mix of production engineers and locations from the start of this year! Primarily I worked on this track with long-time colleagues and friends in the local music community, ‘Woman With Needs’ was recorded with producer Jake Amy (of Attaboi magazine) and mixed by Toby Peterson-Stewart (of The Omnific) who are just incredible at what they do.

How was it making the music video during COVID?
Making the music video for ‘Woman With Needs’ during COVID was definitely a challenge. I ended up giving up any hope in filming and creating it with a seperate director and film crew, and ended up conceptualising, filming and editing the whole thing myself. Many hours were put into putting together a story board, repositioning the camera, doing my own set design, getting the lighting right, editing, and basically trying to figure out how I could create something that looked semi-professional by myself in my home setting.

What is it like being a female creator in a male dominated industry?
Recently it feels like the balance of female creators in lineups, conversations and creations have been levelling out, slowly. We’re seeing more womxn and non-binary creators getting important recognition and celebration for their work, which is wonderful to see. It’s still hard sometimes to feel like your voice is being heard in this male-dominated environment, but I’ve luckily worked very hard to get the respect from my male peers in this industry, and nowadays don’t tolerate any oppressive behaviour. Right now we’re stepping into the right side of history, and I love feeling more empowered and comfortable being a female creator.

You’ve rebranded from Emilia to Miss Emilia, how and why did this come about?
It didn’t come to my attention before I started my journey as ‘Emilia’, that there were many, many Emilia’s releasing music in the world – you really couldn’t find me! Miss Emilia felt more powerful, more of a statement and entity, and with the re-brand I wanted to have a fresh start and release music that was important to me, and spoke of topics that would uplift and empower. I needed a change to be seen, and heard as the artist I am.

What direction are you taking your music with this single and future music?
The music that I will release from here on out will be music that is true to me. True to my roots and upbringing, true to my story and experience, true to the person that I strive to be. My music is music for the soul, feel good, and powerful.

Who are you listening to at the moment?
I’m so, so lucky to be surrounded by incredible local musicians that are churning out incredible music. I’m all about that local sound! There are too many fantastic artists at the moment to even list, so I’d say check out one of my favourite ‘home’ venues The Night Cat, who have been putting a spotlight in their spotify playlists of local music coming out of Melb. Anything with a good groove and a good feel I’m all about.

What do you like to do away from music?
Music is my central passion, work and love of my life; but outside of it and especially during COVID I love to experiment with vintage fashion looks and taken an interest in sustainable beauty, cook plant-based food, experiment with graphic design, self-timed photoshoots and visual art creation. I also love lying outside in the garden in the sunshine with my big lassie dog Chester and growing my ever-expanding plant and local handmade art collection.

What’s planned for the remainder of 2020 going into 2021?
Who knows what this year will bring really, when restrictions will be lifted, and what that even means for now is quite blurry. I’m just trying to focus on the now, taking care of myself and checking in with loved ones, trying out new creations and honing into my values and trying to shape and grow into the person I want to be. I hope to have the privilege, space and time to release more music, that speaks to me and can maybe speak and bring joy to others.

Favourite food and place to hangout?
I’d have to say I’m a sucker for pasta and potatoes, anything that involves those two food groups, I’m happy! I’ve also, pre-covid, and as much as possible nowadays, been trying to make or find the perfect plant-based burger, or any plant-based soul food really! Right now, my favourite place to hang out is in the sunshine in my garden, or in my reading chair by the window in my room.

THE BOUNCING SOULS ANNOUNCE VOLUME 2 OUT OCTOBER 23 ALBUM OF REIMAGINED SONGS PRODUCED BY WILL YIP

by the partae September 7, 2020
written by the partae
New Jersey punk legends, The Bouncing Souls, have announced Volume 2, a cheekily titled album of reimagined songs from across their catalog. Due out October 23 from Pure Noise Records / Sony Music Australia, Volume 2 was produced by Will Yip (The Menzingers, Title Fight, Tigers Jaw) and offers a new take on the timeless songwriting at the heart of the band’s three decade career. The album features different versions of ten classic Souls songs as well as one brand new track, World On Fire. To mark the announcement the band have shared their update on Ghosts On The Boardwalk a perfect example of the fresh light that Volume 2 shines on The Bouncing Souls‘ music. The song opens with sparse guitar and vocals before slowly blooming into a soaring arrangement that peels back the distortion while maintaining the heart-lifting elements that make The Bouncing Souls so enduring.

The initial spark for Volume 2 came from the acoustic sets The Bouncing Souls were playing before the shows on their 30th anniversary tour in 2019, but the idea quickly expanded once they got in the studio with Yip. “We initially wanted to recreate some of the stripped-down vibe of the acoustic sets, but if anything, these versions are much more involved than the original versions,” guitarist Pete Steinkopf says. “The first day we got to the studio Will said something like ‘we’re not gonna just make an acoustic record, right guys?’ We were like ‘hell no’ and then we were off to the races.” The process provided a unique opportunity for the band to recast some of their most cherished music. “Many of the songs we recorded have been around for twenty years or more and we’ve played them thousands of times,” vocalist Greg Attonito says, “It was really satisfying to bring 30 years of experience to these recordings. We knew the songs inside and out so it was fun to stretch them out a bit and see what happened.”

Biography:
The Bouncing Souls have always been able to walk a line between looking towards the future and appreciating the past—never resting on their laurels, but proudly carrying their decades long story with them as they continue to grow. Now, the beloved New Jersey punks have brought that perspective to Volume 2: a cheekily titled album of reimagined songs from across their catalog that offers a new take on the timeless songwriting at the heart of their lengthy career.

In 2019, The Bouncing Souls—vocalist Greg Attonito, guitarist Pete Steinkopf, and bassist Bryan Kienlen, who started the band in 1989, along with drummer George Rebelo who joined in 2013—celebrated 30 years as a band, but they remain excited to seek out new experiences in the studio and on the stage. They teamed with acclaimed producer/engineer Will Yip (The Menzingers, Title Fight, Turnstile) to mark the milestone, recording an EP of new songs, Crucial Moments, and then embarking on a year long run of shows across the globe. Yip brought an invigorating spark to The Souls’ hook-filled punk sound, and the band pushed themselves out of their live comfort zones as well. “We decided to do something we hadn’t done before by playing these acoustic sets before the shows,” Attonito explains. “We had a lot of fun winging it and people started asking us if we were thinking about doing an acoustic record…so we started to think about it.”

The band recruited Yip once again, and their early idea quickly grew beyond the initial stripped-down conceit. “We went into making this record with no plan or pretense at all,” says Steinkopf. “The first day we got to the studio Will said something like ‘we’re not gonna just make an acoustic record, right guys?’ We were like ‘hell no’ and then we were off to the races.” The sessions were intentionally loose and spontaneous, with Yip encouraging a try-anything approach, and resulted in 10 drastically different versions of Bouncing Souls classics, as well as a brand new song. The process provided a unique opportunity for the band to cast some of their most cherished music in a fresh light. “Many of the songs we recorded have been around for twenty years or more and we’ve played them thousands of times,” Attonito says, “It was really satisfying to bring 30 years of experience to these recordings. We knew the songs inside and out so it was fun to stretch them out a bit and see what happened.”

On Volume 2, songs like Simple Man and Ghosts On The Boardwalk feature sweeping arrangements and shimmering, Cure-esque guitars, while upbeat crowd-pleasers like Argyle and Kids and Heroes peel back the distorted guitars without losing The Souls’ undeniable energy. “It felt great to shine a new light on some of the older punk songs and allow the lyrics to be heard more clearly,” Kienlen points out. Elsewhere, Volume 2’s version of Hopeless Romantic utilizes a drum machine and keyboards, while the soaring chorus of Gone now includes swelling strings. “We initially wanted to recreate some of the stripped-down vibe of the acoustic sets, but if anything, these versions are much more involved than the original versions,” Steinkopf says. And for Rebelo, Volume 2 was a chance to bring something personal to songs recorded before he joined the band. “As a fan, I’ve cherished these songs, and now as a member I got to put my own stamp on them. These versions show how broad The Souls can take things.”

Volume 2 shows just how enduring The Bouncing Souls’ songwriting can be, but it also highlights the band’s incredible ability to capture a moment. Written near the end of the sessions, the brand new song “World On Fire” grapples with the uncertainty gripping the planet. “Our last day in the studio marked the first day of Covid lockdown, and to me this session will always be the period at the end of the huge sentence that was our way of life before Covid,” Attonito says. That context shapes the way he looks back on making Volume 2: “We enjoyed the time spent together in a very spontaneous creative environment without any negativity slowing us down, but on a deeper level it feels like that kind of environment is sorely missing from our world today. It’s something that actually feels so natural and life-giving, and it’s really sad that we have to fight for it. Everyone deserves that kind of space in their lives. I hope this little collection of songs is fuel for that fight.”

PERTO AND BANOFFEE TEAM UP ON
NEW SINGLE ‘I MISS YOU’

PERTO & BANOFFEE – ‘I MISS YOU’
OUT NOW

STREAM ‘I MISS YOU’ HERE

“Blond-mopped Aussie musical prodigy Perto, who’s fast making a name for himself around the world”
– GQ

“With Perto’s production hailing the attention of some pretty f***g big names, it’s been exciting to watch his musical evolution”
– STONEY ROADS

“Sydney producer consistently pushing the boundaries within the bass sub-genre, has proved himself to be more than just a young up-and-coming trend, working with some of the world’s biggest names”
– PILERATS

Today, eclectic Sydney born-producer Perto and Melbourne-born LA based singer/songwriter and producer Banoffee team up for their new single ‘I Miss You’. In uncertain times, good music gives solace – Perto and Banoffee’s “I Miss You” does just that, an uplifting ballad that was realised during a period of time where we weren’t as confined.

The duo got together in-between lockdowns in Melbourne to create a slice of nice that everyone needs in their life…  now more than ever. The idea came to life in one of those magic days where in a matter of hours the song was done. Tom Norris (Skrillex, Lady Gaga, Porter Robinson) added the finishing touches by mixing and mastering the track.

“It’s definitely one of my favourite songs I’ve written in a while and the whole energy of the session was really refreshing, especially after being in lockdown.” Perto shares.

Banoffee adds: “I wrote the lyrics to express the feelings of sadness and frustration that come with having a friend in trouble. In the end we’re all helpless and support is all we can offer. ‘I Miss You’ is about missing someone who’s lost in their own web.”

‘I Miss You’ follows Perto’s fan favourite flip of Kim Petras’ ‘Clarity’ and recent collaboration with Whipped Cream & Ravenna Golden ‘IDFC’. While Banoffee (born Martha Brown) follows the success of her debut album Look At Us Now Dad which was released in February and remixes of tracks done by Planet 1999, umru and Nina Las Vegas in July.

Perto and Banoffee’s new single ‘I Miss You’ is out now everywhere, get amongst it here.

ABOUT PERTO
Perto is undoubtedly Australia’s biggest (and youngest) new export. His eclectic brand of electronic production has seen him release singles and remixes streamed millions of times, perform high-energy live sets around the world to thousands of devoted fans, and hit the studio with some of the world’s biggest acts — and he’s just turned 18.

The Sydney-born producer is a certified musical prodigy, whose output is mature beyond his years but as innovative and fortuitous as one would expect from an internet-fuelled savant with the world’s musical history at his fingertips.

2020 promises to be enormous for Perto, but in his words:
“I don’t pay too much attention to it. I just make music.”

ABOUT BANOFFEE
Banoffee’s music is transgressive and she has a deeply vulnerable approach to pop. She has toured with Taylor Swift on a worldwide stadium tour as part of Charlie XCX’s troupe, and represents the new wave of mutant pop bubbling up from today’s queer club underground. She has been described as one of pop music’s “recent great forward thinkers” (FACT) and is known for infectious melodies that belie more unsettling, experimental textures and beats.

Look At Us Now Dad is Banoffee’s debut album, and it is an uplifting, hopeful journey that celebrates survival in the face of abuse and adversity. Featuring collaborations with SOPHIE, Empress Of, Cupcakke, Umru, and co-produced by Banoffee and Yves Rothman, it is an exciting musical hybrid of experimental club sounds and earworm pop. “Each song uses human experience to talk about more complex concepts of addiction, obsession, heartbreak, and resurrection,” says Banoffee. “Not to dwell in sadness, but to join hands.”

Turn The Tables, a music-based social enterprise supporting those who have experienced homelessness, announce first ambassador Bushwacka! and launch Crowdfunder to aid project expansion

Backed with a board of music industry professionals and experts in social activism, Scottish start up social enterprise Turn The Tables have announced plans for expansion after a successful pilot run in Edinburgh last year. With a focus on mixing records, the group – founded in 2018 by Cyrenians volunteer Robbie Tolson – support those who have experienced homelessness by delivering workshops that build mental health resilience through a holistic approach to wellbeing.

The group hope to help support even more people facing homelessness across Scotland and beyond – but they need financial support. An estimated 320,000 people are considered homeless in the UK and this number is expected to rise even further as a direct result of the economic and mental health impacts of Covid-19. Donate to the Crowdfunder page here: https://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/turnthetables.

Turn the Tables are also delighted to announce that Bushwacka! has become their first ambassador. The legendary DJ – who recently began working as a therapist – has started his own ‘Listen Up Therapy’ to provide therapy and counselling services to people working within the music and entertainment industries.

Bushwacka! said: “From my years djing to working within mental health there is something about the project that has really resonated with me. I have fundraised for homelessness charities in the past, so it is an honour to be supporting the work that Turn The Tables do.”

The concept behind Turn The Tables was sparked when Robbie, a Heriot Watt Graduate Town Planning and Property Development Graduate from Stirling, signed up to volunteer at Edinburgh’s Social Bite Village homelessness support community in 2018. From here, Robbie successfully set up various DJ workshops for people living in hostels or facing homelessness. The opportunity to learn to mix, operate professional sound and light equipment, and reconnect with the music they love, while socialising in a safe environment, was an invaluable experience for those involved.

Together with Ryan, who was living in a hostel at the time, Robbie performed the first live Turn The Table’s gig at The List’s 2019 Fringe Festival opening party. The gig was so successful they were hired on the night by Diageo to perform on every day of the festival at their Johnny Walker pop-up site. By reinvesting the profits made from gigs into delivering workshops, training and impactful recovery support for members – while challenging the public’s perception of homelessness – Turn The Tables was born.

Ryan, who has remained closely involved with the project since its inception, said: “I’m really keen to help other people who find themselves in the same situation I was in. It’s so nice to have a space to listen to music and play tunes that I like. It was also great to be around people and to have a bit of fun and have a laugh – which is something I hadn’t had in my life for a really long time.

“The project has really helped my mental health and gave me a sense of achievement. Playing in front of 1,000 people was a dream come true for me. Being a DJ and making people dance is just so much fun. It’s a total thrill.”

Snapping snares and serene synth stabs create a playground for both wordsmiths to experiment with their rhythm and cadence, with the expertly arranged one-shot video clip depicting the playful, but erratic bars flawlessly.

Kiyanosh will continue with his dynamic 2020 output, with both ‘4BAR4’ and ‘KARMA’ appearing on his forthcoming EP ‘Dying Alone’ – due October 1. In addition to his solo project, Kiyanosh is also a member of hip-hop duo SKID2 and founder of the Spretbot Syndicate record label and collective.

JOSIAH JOHNSON RELEASES DEBUT SOLO ALBUM ‘EVERY FEELING ON A LOOP’

JOSIAH JOHNSON RELEASES DEBUT SOLO ALBUM ‘EVERY FEELING ON A LOOP’

by the partae September 7, 2020
written by the partae

FORMER AND FOUNDING MEMBER OF
THE HEAD AND THE HEART
EMBARKS ON A NEW MUSICAL JOURNEY

“Songs meant to buoy and reassure” — American Songwriter

“Warm songs elevated by mariachi brass and low-key arrangements” – MOJO

Five years ago when Josiah Johnson took a leave of absence from the acclaimed indie-folk band The Head and the Heart, the question was less where Johnson’s star would take him and more whether his struggles with addiction would end his music career. Like many musicians before him, Johnson turned to drugs to cope with the burnout and anxiety that came with his new life. During the recording of the band’s third album, Johnson left to enter rehab and a journey of healing began.

On his debut solo album Every Feeling on a Loop, out now, lush musical arrangements and harmonies support Johnson’s baritone crooning. At times, the songs sound like prayers. At others, his exuberance feels like the euphoria he’d always sought, this time hard-earned and wiser. He says he feels like a new person making it, charting his journey out of the dark into the wide awake of the morning, using the magic that was his all along.

Standouts include the lead track, “False Alarms,” which sees Johnson moving optimistically through fears and growing pains toward what’s next, punctuated by ecstatic trumpets. On “Woman In A Man’s Life,” over a bed of hypnotic drums and swelling strings, Johnson celebrates his queer identity, kept hidden until recently. “For a long time,” he says, “I held onto a lot of shame around the softness and sensitivity – around the nurturing parts of myself.”

Growing up curious and bright in an insular, conservative community, Johnson says he learned early on to discern which parts of himself were welcome and which were not. Though he felt love in that community, it was a smaller love than what he needed. Now, though, after years of self-study and self-healing, bolstered both by music and the love from friends and family, Johnson is ready to pen the next chapter of his life. First, it starts with Every Feeling on a Loop.

“I’ve learned to love my process,” Johnson says. “I’ve learned to love when I’ve taken the long way and where I get to admit mistakes. Humility and uncertainty are welcome. Being seen for who I am and where I’m at is my priority. And I am exactly where I am supposed to be. The result of that new courage bears out in how I’m able to be a better friend to the people I love. That’s the gift.”

LEWW UNVEILS POIGNANT NEW SINGLE ‘SHOW YA’ FT. SIN SANTOS

SUPPORT FOR ‘SHOW YA’

“Gliding over the record with invigorating wordplay and rapid flows, leww shines with confidence as he vows his diligent grind is bound to pay off.“
– The Local Frequency (AUS)

Melbourne-based R&B artist leww has just revealed his evocative new single ‘Show Ya’ featuring Sin Santos – produced by SB90 (Illy, Allday, KLP).

Opening with ominous synth bass, tense acoustic guitar plucks and the captivating lead vocals of the artist himself, ‘Show Ya’ swiftly unfolds into an exquisite composition of deftly produced R&B. The track’s bridge introduces the slick bars of Sin Santos, before launching into the anthemic final chorus, satisfyingly bringing the song to a close.

leww talks about the inspiration behind ‘Show Ya’:

“I originally wrote this song on the piano in my bedroom, and as I laid out the chords, I realised I wanted to make it a feel-good motivational song. About a day before I went into the studio with SB90 (Stuart B Productions), I tried playing the chords on an acoustic guitar, and that’s when the main riff was born. The lyrics follow my current feelings about where I am in my career and where I want to go with it.”

leww is the music project of multi-instrumentalist Lewis Townley, a Melbourne-based artist who takes inspiration from artists Juice WRLD, Post Malone and Machine Gun Kelly to create fervent pop music. “I grew up around music, and I was lucky that my Dad was into piano, guitars and music production, so we managed to progressively set up a bit of a home studio and a collection of different guitars and keyboards,” Lewis explains.

“I usually write all my songs acoustically with one instrument, with a vision in my head about drumbeats and different aspects to the mix before I head into the studio. This year I have been busy writing, recording and producing songs, expect plenty of new music in the works” he continues.

‘Show Ya’ is available worldwide now
