Frank Iero and the Future Violence aka The Future Violents have announced that their new Heaven is a Place, This is a Place EP will be released on Friday January 15, 2021 via UNFD. Serving as a companion piece to 2019’s critically acclaimed full length, Barriers, the EP is split into two distinct movements.

Side A reveals the true meaning of “Violence”, a song title Iero has teased on bass drums in all his Future Violents music videos. Indeed, it’s opening gambit of “You got so sick, I thought I’d die, you got so down, I couldn’t get high” before the chorus refrain of “Your violence feels like kisses to me, your silence makes it harder to breathe, your distance feels like I’m not enough…I need your touch” sees Iero at his most scathing and damaged. Never have these words felt more relevant as they do now. This ferocity and redemptive anger continues into “Sewer Wolf “ where in the chorus Iero professes, “I come alive forged in fire, My love will break these chains built from pain, they can’t hold me down.”

In total contrast to side A, side B finds the band more delicate and thoughtful, complete with soaring soundscapes before the final crescendo of ‘Record Ender’. All while paying beautiful tribute to Iero’s journey with The Future Violents and its members musical fortitude.

In 2016, Iero and his guitar-playing brother in law, Evan Nestor, were involved in a brutal motor vehicle accident in Australia – one they barely survived. During the process of recovery, the REM song, ‘Losing My Religion‘ started making pivotal appearances in unusual places / weird circumstance and the mantra repeated itself as time went on.

When Iero resumed touring, post accident in 2017, one of the members of the support band, Kayleigh Goldsworthy, struck a chord both literally and proverbially.

Iero notes: “From the first show I was completely impressed with her musicianship and by touring together I realised she was also a rad human being who I desperately wanted to write and play music with. In my mind she was already in my next band, I just had to write the music, name the band, find the other musicians, oh and of course ask her. But during that first tour together we got to talking about how she played the mandolin and how we shared a love for R.E.M., and more specifically ‘Losing my Religion’. So, on the last night of tour in San Francisco we found an empty room/hallway/stairwell type place and made an iPhone voice memo demo of the song. It felt like magic and that was the moment I was convinced this couldn’t be the only thing we did together.”

Goldsworthy’s band was subsequently invited to tour the UK & Europe and in London, a BBC session at the legendary Maida Vale studios culminated in Iero, Nestor, and Goldsworthy recording their unique take on ‘Losing’ amidst analogue history and English rain. The magic in the air was palpable and despite being on a sold out tour for an existing album (Parachutes) everyone in the room knew that this was the starting point of something new and truly great.

Iero has always employed a new band name for each stage of his solo career (The Cellabration / The Patience / The Patients / The Future Violents / The Future Violence) and there surely can be no doubt that as ‘Losing My Religion’ is the start of the band then ‘Record Ender’, the closing track, is the bookmark conclusion as Iero sings “Maybe we fooled them all, at least I hope we did.”

Originally tracked at the same time as Barriers by Steve Albini, Heaven was finished and mixed by long-term friend and collaborator Steve Evetts in late 2020. Describing the Steve ‘squared’ sound as sonic perfection for these songs, Iero is quick to point out that this is not merely leftovers from Barriers but very much a main course.

“The Future Violents was the perfect band at the perfect time for me. The creativity flowed through us like rapids and we didn’t stop writing because we ran out of inspiration…it was just time to go to the studio. In fact I was still writing at the studio, but I allowed myself the luxury of 14 songs on the record leaving 3 to survive in the shadows. Lying in wait. I knew I wanted them to see the light, it was just a matter of how and when.”

Elaborating on the origins of the EP, Iero comments, “The title of the EP actually comes from the night before we started recording Barriers at Electrical Audio in Chicago. The band went out to eat and get drinks at a local Tiki bar called, Lost Lake. On the menu that night there was a drink called Heaven is a place/This is the place.” shares Iero on the meaning behind the EP title. “I love when the universe gives you gifts like that. You just have to be in tune to your surroundings. The name struck me as clever and I started to think about how changing one word in that title meant something way more profound to me. Heaven is a place, if you believe in that sort of thing…It is the reward at the end of a long hard journey of fighting the good fight and living your life to whatever standards you hold dear. But it’s just a place. And so is this…This is a place, the earthly realm, miraculous on so many levels but also just a place. The difference is you and your perception.”

Off the back of two sold-out shows in Sydney and the 2020 J Award for Best Australian Music Video Of The Year overnight, ascendant Bowraville-born rapper Tasman Keith today shares his latest single, ‘CONFIDENT’, and announces the forthcoming release of his debut mixtape To Whom It May Concern due this year. Listen HERE.

Muscular and minimal, ‘CONFIDENT’ leans into the trunk-rattling, bare-bones style of previous single ‘BILLY BAD AGAIN’. With twisted, nocturnal synths, skittish percussion, and a late beat switch leading to a raucous, half-time climax, ‘CONFIDENT’ is not the first time Keith’s music can compare to Kendrick Lamar’s. What makes the comparison all the more apparent is Tasman’s finely-tuned craft; a flow that moves between leisurely, unapologetic aplomb and razor-sharp lucidity, oozing tenacity, perseverance, and an elemental self-assuredness no matter which gear he’s operating in. The result is goosebump inducing furore.

“Over the three verses in this song, I’m speaking to three different things,” Tasman shares. “In the first verse, I’m speaking on the confidence within myself. The second is me showing my confidence to the suits in the industry, and the third is showing it to racists/bigots. The third verse is also a moment where all three things are addressed in one verse.”

2020 has seen Tasman’s profile continue to rise through collaborations and guest features, appearing on Jimmy Nice’s ‘Same Water’, Northern Territory producer Kuya James’ powerful single ‘No Country’, including its own stripped-back version ‘No Country (Piano In F Minor)‘, and alongside Jessica Mauboy on ‘First Nation’, the second single lifted from The Makarrata Project, Midnight Oil’s first studio album in over 18 years. Tasman capped yet another banner year with his debut TV performance twice on the second season of The ABC‘s live music series, The Sound.

Despite ‘CONFIDENT‘ being only his second solo release of the year this far, Tasman Keith continues to live up to its title – and then some.

Melbourne singer-songwriter and producer Jerome Farah today shares his latest single, ‘Vibrate‘. Listen and watch HERE.

After his electrifying, politically-charged and compelling debut, ‘I Can’t Breathe‘, and surveying the hurt of racial stereotypes on the contemplative second single, ‘Mikey Might‘, Jerome takes his dexterous, genre-melding sound to comparatively lighter and poppier ends on just his third solo single to date. Self-assured and justified in its own saltiness, ‘Vibrate’ addresses an ex-lover, reveling in the satisfaction that comes from having moved onto something better while the other has stayed in the same place. On ‘Vibrate‘, as always, Farah is chasing honesty both through and within his music, whether that’s speaking to police brutality, the hurt of racial stereotypes or a spurned ex.

Mixing looped, chanting vocals with his free-ranging flow and an insistent instrumental, ‘Vibrate‘ demonstrates that Jerome plans to approach his career with the same boundaryless attitude with which he produces and writes his own music, having covered more artistic ground and taken more surprising-but-profitable risks in this opening stanza than most artists his age. Completing the release is the music video, shot during Stage 4 lockdown in Melbourne with the help of just one other person – watch BELOW.

Prior to stepping into the spotlight as one of Australian music’s breakout stars of 2020, the 27-year-old Jerome Farah was an APRA-Award winning, ARIA nominated songwriter and a much-sought-after collaborator, having previously worked with Tash Sultana on ‘Willow Tree‘, Baker Boy (‘Marryuna‘, ‘Mr La-Di-Da-Di‘, ‘Meditjin‘), KIAN on ‘Waiting‘, Tkay Maidza‘s ‘You Sad‘, plus Adrian Eagle and Dallas Woods. A stylistic polymath, Jerome’s fusion of neo-soul, R&B and alternative rap threads together styles and influences informed by his multicultural upbringing.

His first two solo singles landed like dynamite across the Australian music landscape, receiving full rotation on triple j, as well as garnering praise from NME Australia, Acclaim, Pilerats, Purple Sneakers and more, Jerome Farah’s debut singles have so far amassed a combined over one million streams worldwide and featured on playlists ranging from RADAR AU & NZ to Alt Rap, Breaking R&B, Fresh Finds and more.

Thick as Thieves assemble 140 music industry creatives to complete marathon for charity

by the partae November 20, 2020
written by the partae

The team at Thick as Thieves is synonymous with dance music events in Melbourne. Still, over the past decade, they added another page to their portfolio: organising charity drives for The Fred Hollows Foundation. Despite their efforts raising over $800,000 for the foundation, their current Quick As Thieves campaign might be their most ambitious drive to date. On Saturday, 5 December, a team of 140 music industry creatives will run a half or full marathon (42,2 km) spanning the coastal loop. (Six of those contestants will complete an ultra-marathon which is 63,3 km). Not only has everyone involved pledged to fundraise $1000, but for many, it will be their first time competing in an endurance race.

Since 2015, we’ve had a small team doing an annual charity drive by entering various fitness events like Coastrek,’ explains Mike Toner, the Thick as Thieves Director. ‘We’ve probably run, cycled and swam over 1,500km so far – all in the name of charity.’ This year, when Toner cast the net to assemble a team, he was blown away by the interest. One hundred and forty willing participants came forward, eager to take on the challenge of fundraise $1k each by completing a half or full marathon. ‘It was an incredible response, and a lot of the interest came from the music industry sector’. Marathon fit DJs? Prepare yourself for early morning DJs training for a marathon instead of leaving Revolver. ‘Ha, all the team members are very excited. We started a wholesome WhatsApp group where everyone is highly supportive of each other’s efforts.’

The interest has indeed come from very surprising quarters. Included in this year’s race is Benson, Melbourne’s festival conquering and the self-confessed bad boy who ‘your parents love to hate’, global club chart-topping producer Torren Foot, and Thick as Thieves family members Jacob Malmo and Mike Callander. Information about the campaign even reached Sydney, bolstering local creatives to join the cause. This lead to many early morning runs amongst industry insiders Ming Gan, Scott Robertson, Paul Stix, Graham Cordery and Ben Ashton.

However, due to COVID uncertainty, the Sydney chapter completed their marathon on 22 September. ‘None of us had ever done a full marathon before,’ recalls Fuzzy Director Ming Gan.‘ When we first started training for this, I had rarely run more than 5km in the past, so the aim for me was a half marathon.’ In the end, the whole team’s determination paid off, with Cordery finishing a half marathon and the rest a full marathon. And for their efforts, they raised $15,000 for the Fred Hollows Foundation.

However, as Mike explains, the charity drive’s most famous supporter hails from Frankston. ‘I started jogging with a good friend Chris Coe who happens to be a studio engineer working with Carl Cox. When he told Carl about the project, the legend was immediately interested in helping out. So we asked Carl if he would be up for delivering the prizes on the day which he agreed to.’ Further fundraising motivation comes in the form of technology brand Pioneer. The DJ industry global leader will award the biggest fundraiser with a brand new V10 mixer valued at $6,000.

Current estimates have this year’s event set to raise over $250,000 of which 100% of proceeds will go to the Fred Hollows Foundation. Aside from raising money for such a great cause, Mike notes that a by-product of past runs has been the significant benefits to mental health and physical well being for participants. ‘Especially during COVID, this run has given many participants something to focus on.’

Life Without Andy

Sydney-via-Boston rapper Raj Mahal today releases the dark and frenetic EP, RAW DAWG. With the release comes with visual for ‘KAPPA‘. Listen HERE and watch HERE.

With this release, Raj Mahal is staunch, firm and intense, traversing an array of sonic bounds. Joining the hard-edged ‘GLIMPSE‘ and minimalist ‘GET ME FROM‘ includes the gothic driven ‘GUARANTEE‘ and hymnal backed ‘2DOECOO‘, before shifting to the electronica laden ‘BREAKS‘ contrasted with the trap heavy ‘PASTRANAK‘ and ‘EZAQLEE‘. ‘DUCHOVY‘ rallies the RAW DAWG journey together, with a sample of Raj reflecting, “When you’re down you’ll never be able to compare yourself to when you’re up, but later you’ll completely forget about that shit and move onto the next.” Earnest in its entirety, RAW DAWG is a display of the stark mental state that birthed it. Throughout, Mahal’s message is clear – the long time hustler for his craft is on a mission for stardom.

For the Boston born rapper, relocating to Australia was a decision made to find himself both emotionally and musically. Inspired by his uncles, key members of Boston’s small hip hop scene, Raj Mahal began rapping as a teenager, but his primary focus was on pursuing a career in football. Before long, with his family’s influence and an unsuspecting introduction to a producer several oceans away, Mahal put football on the backburner and took the plunge. No longer holding back with his drone laced blows, Mahal hopes to craft a lane for hip hop’s formidable storytelling origins to return to the local spotlight.

Reflecting on his journey with the release of this EP, Raj Mahal shares: “RAW DAWG was a self care mechanism that helped get me out of a dark place this year. It made me remember who I am and what I’m about to do and I don’t plan on forgetting that ever again.”

RAW DAWG is Raj’s first major release since 2017’s, Neva Safe, following on from a string of standalone singles that has seen his stock skyrocket in his adopted country’s hip-hop scene. In between then releases Mahal has collaborated with Triple One, Nerve, Dro Carey, Yibby and more, has performed as one quarter of Savour the Rations, his group with Gibrillah and Domba, and has opened for Wiley, YG and Smokepurpp on their Australian tours. Now with RAW DAWG, Mahal arrives with guts and soul-baring faith, in an exercise of zero restraint.

RELEASE DEBUT ALBUM FIRST CONTACT, REVEAL INCREDIBLE LIVE PERFORMANCE FILM FOR ‘OUT OF TOUCH’ + PERFORMING SOLD-OUT SHOWS IN QLD

by the partae November 20, 2020
written by the partae

Lastlings today reveal their lush twelve track debut album First Contact (out now via Liberation Records). With anticipation heightening from one single to the next over the past year, siblings Josh and Amy Dowdle have finally revealed the LP in its entirety. First Contact explores the senses and emotions that arise when encountering experiences for the first time.

Coinciding with the release of the album, the duo also unveil the epic live performance film for their latest single ‘Out Of Touch’. Shot on location at a series of stunning landscapes throughout South Australia and Queensland, and working alongside Sydney-based director and creative Dylan Duclos, the video sees Josh and Amy exploring an otherworldly realm.

A first brush with love, an introduction to the darkness of disappointment, one’s inaugural feeling of hope amidst a world devoid of meaning – these are the experiential lenses through which First Contact is best heard and felt. It is this sense of narrative immersion that stands at the center of the project, always connecting back to life’s milestones from one’s first breath to last.
“First Contact is all the moments we experience for the first time, how special they are and how important they are in shaping us as people. It is about those beautiful moments when we feel love for the first time, a child taking its first steps or travelling to a new destination. It’s also about the sombre moments in our life where we have lost something or someone for the first time and how we grow and change from these. We hope that this album sparks all the beautiful and important memories, feelings and emotions that you felt when you experienced something for the first time.” – Lastlings on the meaning behind First Contact

The album opens with the love-swept vocals of ‘Deja Vu’, cascading into ‘Take My Hand’ which presents a chase scene energy as fit for dancefloors as it is for science fiction’s past. ‘Out of Touch’ showcases the organic production that primes the album for mainstages worldwide, with delicate guitar licks proclaiming the duo’s destiny for live-electronic stardom. ‘False Reactions’, with its building melodic potency, ushers the listener through the precipice of the album where the intricacies of ‘Last Breath’ and ‘No Time’ demonstrate just why this band has truly arrived. It is at the record’s finale that its meaning truly takes form, with ‘I’ve Got You’ offering a timely look into the artists’ urgency to check in on those they love.Partially written at a remote snow-capped house in tranquil Aomori, a small fishing village on the northern side of Japan and their grandparents’ hometown, Lastlings weave elements of Japanese landscapes and cultural touch points throughout First Contact. The album also has clear recalls to their cinematic, science fiction muses: Blade Runner, Akira, Ghost in the Shell and Studio Ghibli films.

Lastlings’ deep sense of artistry and determination have set them apart across today’s musical landscape. Championed by Grammy-nominated trio RÜFÜS DU SOL, Lastlings has been warmly welcomed to the band’s own label, Rose Avenue Records. Since then, they’ve worked with producers like SG Lewis, remixed by Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs, and toured with industry giants like Two Door Cinema Club, Bob Moses, and Glass Animals. Together with their three piece live setup featuring Josh on keys and guitar, a live drummer, and Amy on vocals, they have played career-defining sold-out shows alongside RÜFÜS DU SOL at Colorado’s Red Rocks, Los Angeles State Historic Park and many other renowned venues. Their latest single ‘Out Of Touch’ can currently be heard on the airwaves of triple j or found across a myriad of Apple Music and Spotify playlists globally.

It is with an inquisitive and open mind that listeners can find meaning at every turn as they experience Lastlings’ ever growing universe through the emotive soundscapes of First Contact.

WOLF & CUB New album NIL is out today!

by the partae November 20, 2020
written by the partae

Praise for NIL

“Plays like a highlight reel of what they do best: brooding guitar riffs, agile rhythm section, palpable mood swings and effects-shrouded vocals from leader Joel Byrne.” – NME, ★★★★

“A mighty return to form.” – Rolling Stone

“A solid, pulsing slice of noisy rock that makes us feel like they’d never left.” – Double J

“The bearded boys are back, sounding darker and heavier than ever” – Grass FIres

Today, Wolf & Cub release their fourth album NIL via Part Time Records / Remote Control.

Featuring the dark and abrasive first single ‘Blue State’ & searing second single ‘Close to the Edge’, NIL is Wolf & Cub‘s first long-form release since 2013’s Heavy Weight. Where Heavy Weight hinted at the band’s ability to traverse tougher terrain, NIL sees the band gravitate away from previous psych-rock offerings in favour of a masterful and revelatory heaviness.

Produced by the band and released on bandleader Joel Byrne’s own label Part Time Records, NIL was recorded in Sydney at a variety of locations across a protracted timeframe. The album is crushing in its intensity as Wolf & Cub embrace the freedom that comes with starting again and the confidence that comes from experience. “My measurement for Wolf & Cub’s success in my late-thirties is significantly different from what it was at the beginning of our career,” says Byrne. “There’s no burden of expectation here.”

Byrne makes it clear that Wolf & Cub in 2020 is entirely comfortable with their place in the musical landscape: “I think we all saw Heavy Weight as something that had more commercial potential than anything we’d done. When it didn’t live up to those expectations it kind of derailed us. NIL is the result of us going against every instinct that was behind Heavy Weight. It’s liberating: this time it feels like we’re only answering to each other.”

Where are you currently based? I currently live in the Gold Coast.   How did you first start playing music? I’ve literally been playing for my whole life. My family was really involved in Country music competitions when I was growing up, and I started competing when I was 3. My mum is a music teacher, so I was pretty lucky that I got to grow up learning how to play different instruments and always being surrounded by music.   What's been happening recently and how has your Covid experience been so far? Honestly Covid has been pretty lonely! I was definitely lucky because I never lost my job and I wasn’t as hugely impacted as I know a lot of other people have been so I am grateful for that, but I had only just moved to the Gold Coast about 2 months before everywhere started to shut down. I didn’t know anyone here before I moved, so when the restrictions started being implemented I spent a lot of time by myself, which was pretty tough. Recently though, things have been going really well! I’ve started gigging more which has been awesome, and I’ve been able to spend a lot more time working on my music as well which I’m loving. And with more restrictions being lifted all the time, it’s been really great finally being able to see more of the Gold Coast.   Your latest single 'Cut My Nails' is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting? I feel like the emotion behind the song is what influenced the sound. I was writing about a really dark and heavy period of my life, and I think the track is very reflective of that; it gives off this kind of sinister and unstable vibe, which is definitely how I was feeling during the time that I was writing about.   How did you go about writing Cut My Nails? It was actually kind of a hard song to start. My co-writer/producer (Parker Rose)  and I were playing around with a couple of different ideas when I randomly said that I needed to cut my nails, and we kind of just decided it would be a cool lyric and then sat on it for a while before we decided to run with it. It was such a fun song to write though - super experimental which is always exciting, and it was also just really therapeutic. I feel like once we got in the zone, the whole song came together really easily as far as writing it goes.   Where and when did you record/produce? Cut My Nails was Written and Produced at Parkers old studio on the Gold Coast   Please tell us about your connection to the LGBTQI community: After I came out and had to move out of home, I didn’t feel like there were a lot of people in my life that I could really connect with about what I was going through, which was really isolating. Being apart of the LGBTQI community and meeting people with similar experiences to me and being able to celebrate who I am and my sexuality instead of wishing I could change it was so important. Going to Pride festivals and drag shows and meeting people who knew what I was going through and had come out the other side played such a huge role in me accepting myself and getting myself through one of the darkest periods of my life. I really feel so lucky to be apart of such an amazing community that celebrates love and individuality and self expression so intensely. What's planned for the remainder of 2020 going into 2021? I just finished my third single as Cut My Nails was being released so that will be coming out soon! I’m also working on releasing an EP in 2021 so that’s something pretty exciting to look forward to!   Who are you listening to at the moment? I have a few of my all time favourites like Billie Eilish, Benee and Jessie Reyez. Right now though, I really love Alexander 23, FLETCHER and G Flip.   What do you like to do away from music? I love dancing (although I’m really not very good at it, but I don’t mind). I also really like cooking, and I love hanging out with my friends.   What's planned for the remainder of 2020 going into 2021? I just finished my third single as Cut My Nails was being released so that will be coming out soon! I’m also working on releasing an EP in 2021 so that’s something pretty exciting to look forward to!   Favourite food and place to hangout? I absolutely love sushi, it’s easily one of my favourite foods. Either that or strawberry pierogi. My stepmum used to make them for me when I was younger, I’m obsessed with them! As for my favourite place to hangout, I love taking my dog to the beach or going out somewhere with live music. DRY CLEANING Release new single ‘Scratchcard Lanyard’ Official video by Rottingdean Bazaar Watch KEXP live performance

Today, Dry Cleaning share the song ‘Scratchcard Lanyard’, the group’s first release on 4AD / Remote Control Records.

‘Scratchcard Lanyard’ is a treatise on the joy of life’s little pleasures, where air fresheners become mighty oaks and Instagram filters are glamourous holiday destinations. The South London band explain further – “In the search for your true calling in life, it’s easy to try so many things that you end up confused. It can lead to an enormous build-up of frustration. You may fantasise about exacting revenge upon your real or imagined enemies. Ephemeral things and small-scale escapist experiences can provide some relief!”

The companion video for ‘Scratchcard Lanyard’ is the directorial debut of artist duo Rottingdean Bazaar, whose concept and set design – riffing on the song’s celebration of the humdrum – inserts vocalist Florence Shaw into her own miniature night club. Rottingdean Bazaar are artists James Theseus Buck and Luke Brooks. Their work includes design, creative direction and fine art practices, and the duo live and work in Rottingdean, East Sussex in the UK.

Dry Cleaning is Nick Buxton (drums), Tom Dowse (guitar), Lewis Maynard (bass) and Florence Shaw (vocals). Firm friends for years, they only started making music after a karaoke party in 2017 inspired a collaboration. They wrote instrumentally to begin with and six months later Shaw, a university lecturer and picture researcher by day, joined on vocals with no prior musical experience.

Dry Cleaning’s music is simple – direct and uncomplicated. The Feelies, the Necessaries, the B52s and Pylon all served as inspirations when the band first came together. The small and intimate garage / rehearsal space had a huge influence on the sound; both of last year’s EPs Boundary Road Snacks and Drinks and Sweet Princess were written here. The quartet have finished work on their debut album, with details to follow soon.

Back in March, Dry Cleaning recorded a live session for KEXP in their Seattle studio – the last in-person session recorded before COVID-19 hit. Check out the full performance including ‘Scratchcard Lanyard’ and previous singles ‘Magic Of Meghan’, ‘Viking Hair’, & ‘Conversation’ here.

TATYANA Releases new single ‘Back In My Head’

by the partae November 20, 2020

Select Praise for TATYANA’s Shadow On The Wall EP

“Hovering and delicate vocals make it feel like a bittersweet hallucination.” – NYLON

“A lushly produced pop single.”  – The FADER

“Tatyana and her harp have always been a package deal and for good reason – together, they are magical.” – Office Magazine

“Weightless pop vocals underpinned by her harp and lush, soupy synths.” – Crack Magazine

“The ethereal quality of’“Shadow On The Wall’ contrasts with the song’s rather ordinary subject matter.” – The Line Of Best Fit

“A celestial combination of Lorde and Christine and the Queens” – tmrw Magazine

“New & Notable” – Bandcamp

“Smooth pop gem.” – Dork

“Rising Artist” – Vinyl Me Please

“Between Kate Bush, Bjork, and Tears For Fears … there’s also something vividly original at work.” – CLASH

“An astral surprise sculpting her musical dreamland – a vivid wonder that will consume your consciousness” – Cultr

Early this year, emerging U.K.-based singer, producer and harpist TATYANA, released her thrilling debut EP Shadow On The Wall via Sinderlyn, that was praised by tastemaker outlets including NYLON, FADER, office, Line of Best Fit, Crack, and more. Today she releases ‘Back In My Head’ a new single off an evolving mixtape called MELT. Like many of TATYANA’s songs, ‘Back In My Head’ is about the digitisation of romance that is accompanied by soothing, Charli XCX like, auto tune fem vocals.

From TATYANA – “’Back In My Head’ is the first track for a project I have called MELT, which will be a sort of evolving mixtape. I’ll be adding songs to it that fit a certain kind of mood I write from sometimes – darker, minimalist, more experimental. I like to try on different hats so to speak when it comes to making music and not be tethered to a linear approach.

The song itself is quite personal – I was on YouTube late one night and the algorithm posted up a video of someone I used to be involved with. A rush of memories came flooding back, and I realised how much had changed since I had stopped thinking about him. It was such an intense feeling that I just hit record in the studio at 2am, and a stream-of-consciousness lyric came out. It turned a painful moment into something beautiful.”

The Shadow On The Wall EP is a culmination of TATYANA’s impressive first steps. TATYANA lived in Holland, Russia, Singapore, and Boston – where she attended Berklee College of Music on a full scholarship – before settling back in her hometown of London in 2017; the transient nature of her upbringing has certainly informed her music. TATYANA enjoyed a huge swell of praise since releasing her stunning debut single ‘Wild Card’ in March – drawing instant acclaim from The FADER “a lushly produced pop single”, Dork “smooth pop gem” and CLASH “between Kate Bush and Bjork, and Tears For Fears… there’s also something vividly original at work”. From underground raves to viral YouTube covers to playing harp on tour with Neneh Cherry, there seems to be no scene that she doesn’t thrive in. Her new music is a multi-faceted product of all of that experience, the kind of precisely produced, impossibly catchy pop that takes other artists their entire careers to nail.

Where are you currently based? I am living/working in Melbourne, whereas Thijs has moved back to Utrecht in the Netherlands!    How did you first start playing music? My dad plays guitar, and so I had always taken an interest in watching him play music when I was a child. I think when my friends started playing guitar in about year 7 or 8 (Age 13-14?) that really motivated me to pick it up and try to play though! At one point I started learning from a book to read proper music notation etc, but then guitar tabs appeared that let me learn to play ‘Scar Tissue’ from RHCP, and then I was done with learning properly! Sort of regrettable in hindsight not to learn more music theory, but once I could play the songs I loved I just couldn’t be bothered learning the ‘proper’ way. I do often think that my lack of formal musical knowledge allows me to think outside the box a bit though in terms of song writing, without being bounded by what ‘should’ follow a certain chord etc. But it also limits me, which is why working with a classically trained musician (Thijs) worked so well for our songs, I could have the crazy idea, and then he would be able to add really clever additions to the chords/progressions to tie it all together! ☺    What's been happening recently and how has your Covid experience been? I have been super busy with my work in science and also promoting our album! My Covid experience has been very fortunate compared to a lot of people, as I have maintained my employment throughout the entire lockdown in Melbourne. I was able to work from home for many weeks and then get back into the lab occasionally as well because medical research is an essential service. Although working from home was great for a while, I think being able to go back into the workplace was really good for me, and I feel very lucky for it. It was tough not being able to see my parents for around 6 months, as they were outside the ‘ring of steel’, but we have seen each other again now and it was just awesome to get back and say G’day! ☺    Your new album 'Yours to Lend' is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting? There are a huge amount of different influences on this album, as is demonstrated by the range of different sounds within the 10 tracks. The sounds on our album range through rock music like ‘Storm’ to piano ballads like ‘Dork’ and acoustic guitar/harmonica sounds like ‘Rory’. The influences behind all those sounds are so varied it’s hard to describe, but I guess for me personally, my strongest influences are probably as follows: Red Hot Chili Peppers, Incubus (I love the percussive vocal lines in both of these bands, and I often try to include percussive vocal sections in our songs), Ben Harper, Neil Young, and basically anything that makes me feel emotions! I think I can speak on Thijs’s behalf to say his largest influence as a pianist/keyboard player is definitely Supertramp.   How did you go about writing the music? For 9 out of the 10 tracks I had lyrics/chord structures written already in an acoustic form, and I would bring these ideas in to work with me where we would find a quiet room and start putting piano lines to them. But as the songs developed the piano would quickly become the driving force behind the songs, and I would then really reduce the amount of guitar I was playing to a minimal amount to leave room for Thijs’s beautiful piano lines ☺ As a guitarist who has played in guitar heavy punk/rock bands before, it was a really fun experience actually to play in a very minimalistic way, just trying to compliment the piano and vocals. For the song ‘Storm’ our roles were switched…Thijs came in with the whole chord structure on piano and initial lyrics, and we jammed to it, I added some guitar and played around with the lyrics/vocal style until we had what you hear on the album ☺    Where and when did you record/produce? We recorded the whole album with Steve Vertigan at Soggy Dog Recording Studios in Upwey. I have worked with Steve before on some other recordings and I knew he has a great ear for mixing, and vast musical knowledge to draw from during the recording process. The bulk of the recording was done across 2 days in March 2019, where the session musicians Jason Vorherr and Peter Maslen were present to record the bass and drums. Once the ‘skeleton’ of the tracks were down, we raced to get Thijs’s piano/harmonica and backing vocals down before he had to leave for the Netherlands in about May! After that, I basically went back into the studio once a month or so to add in my parts and work on the mixing with Steve. I also had around 7 weeks overseas in the middle of 2019 where I could listen back to the mixes and come back with fresh ears. The final mixes were sent off for mastering with Ross Cockle from Sing Sing Studios in about March 2020, so it really was an album recorded across an entire year! ☺ Although an unusual process, I love writing/recording and it was really great to have a creative project going along on the side whilst I continued working in science.    How did you approach the recording process? I like to approach recording with an open mind to the fact that the songs might take on completely new forms during recording. It’s actually what I love most…the spontaneous things that arise in the studio, whether it’s a little guitar line or a particular take of the vocals, I just love it when you can drive away from the studio listening back to something that didn’t even exist when you drove there in the morning! ☺    What programs/equipment did you use? I have no idea! (Steve?)   What did you find most challenging and rewarding during the creation of the album? Most challenging was probably holding back from rushing the recording. After almost a year of recording/mixing there’s a real desire to get the music out and show it to people, but I really tried to hold on until the music was absolutely finished and mastered before I showed it to most people. I really wanted an end product that I was completely happy with, and it was totally worth the wait in the end, so I guess that is the most rewarding part…there really isn’t anything on the album that I listen to and go ‘Oh no! What were we thinking! Why didn’t we change that bit?’ Which has always been my previous experience with more rushed recordings. Who are you listening to at the moment? Spotify tells me that recently I’ve been switching mainly between Thundercat, Bad Mother Nature, Jackson Browne, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Incubus, John Frusciante, Karnivool and Queens Of The Stone Age.   What do you like to do away from music? I’m a mad scientist in most of my hours away from music. I actually really enjoy my work and particularly microscopy. I get to make time-lapse microscopy images of immune cells attacking their target cells and it’s just an incredible thing to visualise. I have a lot of fun and pour a lot of my creativity into trying to develop new techniques of visualising these events more clearly so that we can learn more about them ☺   What's planned for the remainder of 2020 going into 2021? I think like most people I just want to get through 2020 and then have an awesome 2021! It’s actually been pretty handy getting all of the album out this year, so that hopefully if gigs are allowed in the new year, I can start to focus on remembering how to play guitar and get a band together to perform Dutch Monks songs at live gigs! I’m actually really excited about that, can’t wait to perform these songs!   Favourite food and place to hangout? Oh gee, anyone that knows me knows that I love most food! (a little too much tbh). But I think my favourite would have to be home-made pasties that my Mum makes ☺ As for a place to hangout, this year it’s probably been the research laboratory that I work in at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre! Other years it would be a quiet place in the bush though…as a kid who grew up in the country the city is far too busy for me, I like to get away from it and gather my thoughts ☺  Website https://dutchmonks.com/ Facebook https://www.facebook.com/DutchMonks Instagram https://www.instagram.com/dutch_monks/ Twitter https://twitter.com/DutchMonks YouTube http://bit.ly/DutchMonks_YouTube Spotify http://bit.ly/DutchMonks_Spotify Apple Music https://music.apple.com/au/artist/dutch-monks/1522421212 Soundcloud https://soundcloud.com/user-305369583 Triple j Unearthed https://www.triplejunearthed.com/artist/dutch-monks Bandcamp https://dutchmonks.bandcamp.com/releases

Other years it would be a quiet place in the bush though…as a kid who grew up in the country the city is far too busy for me, I like to get away from it and gather my thoughts ☺

Anna Tur announces the most special live streaming of her career

by the partae November 20, 2020
written by the partae

The event will take place on Sunday 22nd November in the Sant Llorenç mountains.

The streaming will broadcast on her Facebook page and will be supported by more than 40 international channels.

Anna Tur’s creativity keeps opening new horizons. She announced “On Air with Anna Tur”, her new radio adventure, a few months ago and now the DJ and producer announces the celebration of the most special live streaming of her career.

The chosen location is Ibiza. But not the most well-known and commercial Ibiza, but the Ibiza she carries in her blood, the Ibiza she is passionately in love with. On Sunday 22nd, November, Anna Tur will be heading to Sant Llorenç, the island’s highest mountain, because that is where Ibiza’s broadcasting center is located. To explain both the importance of this place and the streaming, there’s no one better than Anna Tur herself:

“It’s difficult to express my feelings when all you can probably see and imagine is a load of iron, frequencies and radiation.  Behind this cold yet mind blowing place, is where my beginnings in radio can be felt. Not only my experience, but a family story.

This place that I perceive as sacred, is the temple of my journey, of my beginnings, of repeatedly going as a little girl with my father to turn the power back on when we had broadcasting issues. There was no working remotely, no alarms… I saw him drive up at any time of day or night to turn on his radio, the radio that never stopped playing. A place that scared me not only because of its impressive structure, but because I knew that when there was a storm or lightning, I interpreted that life was at stake, there could even be a hurricane, but his stubbornness always made its success, the radio could not be stopped.

In the last few years, I have been here many of times. For technical issues and sometimes alone to meditate and feel memories, because here I still have my place, where I can come to listen to the sound of filters, exciters, transmitters or the murmur of electrical tension… sounds that have always made me have so many feelings.

I am a radio woman, because it runs through my veins. That is why today, in this very special place where it all began, I want to dedicate this set to all of you who have been part of my journey and to those who are with me now and hopefully in the future. But above all, I want to pay a tribute to you, after 2 years that you have gone. My angel… Juan Tur.

Welcome to this musical and emotive experience, from the highest mountain in Ibiza.”

More than 40 channels will be in charge of broadcasting this event, including Amnesia Ibiza, Egg London and Dreambeach Festival. On top of that, important international media such as Mixmag will support the broadcast. For more information visit https://www.facebook.com/events/729841387890135/

BRIJEAN Announce new album Feelings Share lead single ‘Day Dreaming’

Brijean – the Oakland-based duo of Brijean Murphy and Doug Stuart – announces their new album, Feelings, out February 26th on Ghostly International, and shares the lead single/video, ‘Day Dreaming.’ The forthcoming album and lead track draw on Murphy’s experience growing up in a family immersed in jazz, Latin, and soul music, and arrive after working extensively within Oakland’s diverse music scene and as one of indie’s most in-demand percussionists (Poolside, Toro Y Moi, U.S. Girls). In 2018, Murphy began recording songs with multi-instrumentalist and producer Doug Stuart, who shares a background in jazz and pop in bands such as Dougie Stu, Bells Atlas, Meernaa, and Luke Temple.

Album opener ‘Day Dreaming’ is a dynamic celebration of newness: the excitement in finding deeper understandings of yourself as you get to know someone, something, or somewhere new. The track is guided by a lush mix of charismatic keyboard chords, grooving bass lines, and radiant conga-driven rhythms. Produced by Stuart with vocals and percussion by Murphy, the track also includes Chaz Bear who engineered and played keyboard. The accompanying video was shot on an iPhone in Los Angeles by Murphy and Stuart and then transformed by flatspot ___• into an immersive and psychedelic world.

Brijean states, “We had been wanting to work with flatspot ___• for a long time – both circling around each other at shows, collectives, and studios for years and finally got to collaborate on this project. His work with Smart Bomb has been a visual anchor and inspiration for Oakland creatives.”

flatspot ___• adds, “I try to leave space in the editing process for the unexpected. It is essential for me, when using analog gear and video feedback, to allow the eccentricities of the electronics to bring out new character. I send the footage through the wires and circuits and experiment with different settings until the desired outcome reveals itself. What is revealed to me by the old gear is just as important, if not more than any plan I may have made.”

Following the duo’s first sessions, which resulted in the mini-album Walkie Talkie (released in 2019 on Native Cat Recordings), Brijean continued collaborating  in Oakland, inviting friends Chaz Bear, Tony Peppers, and Hamir Atwal, who all would end up contributing to the album. “We improvised on different feels for hours,” says Murphy. “Nothing quite developed at first but we had seeds. We re-opened the sessions a couple months later, after returning from tours, and spent a month developing the songs in a little 400 square foot cottage.”

The leap from 2019’s Walkie Talkie to Feelings is marked by a notable expanse in range and energy. Brijean’s signature sound — a golden-hued dream pop tropicalia of dazzling beats and honeyed vocals — elevates with the addition of live drummers, strings, and synths. The album also finds Murphy fully trusting in her strengths, not just as a percussionist, but as a songwriter and collaborator. “Valuing myself as elemental instead of an ‘aux’ percussionist, and the undoubted support and talents of Doug, encouraged me to both make this project andcollaborate with many different people.”

Brijean wants you to move, physically, mentally, dimensionally; this is dance music for the mind, body, and soul. With Feelings, they’ve manifested a gentle collective space for respite, for self-reflection, for self-care, for uninhibited imagination and new possibilities. The album cultivates a specific vibe, a softness Murphy has come to call “romancing the psyche.” In nebulous and verdant worlds of hazy melodies, feathery hooks, and percussive details, Feelings simply want us to feel alive. The songs radiate in wonderful abandon and with a sense of devotion to the self.

ROZZMA Releases ‘Gheirek’ single Khatar Sayeb EP out December 4

Today Egyptian sound artist Rozzma releases new single ‘Gheirek’ form his forthcoming Khatar Sayeb EP out December 4. “Gheirek talks about one’s struggle with being outcast,” Rozzma says. “It talks about the journey of finding the strength to believe in oneself and to fully understand one’s identity while completely ignoring and diminishing universal pressures to adapt pre-set identities. It talks about the will to abandon the fear of the future and the remorse of the past. It’s like cutting ties with safety nets in the middle of nowhere, specifically the ocean, and embracing uncertainty with courage.”

Rozzma is an Egyptian sound artist inspired by the era where sound preceded music –he finds inspiration in the similarities between the wilderness of prehistoric times and modern-day chaos. Having already performed his particular strain of music across the world and at festivals like Sonar and Unsound, Rozzma releases Khatar Sayeb with XL Recordings for the first time.

Rozzma’s world is one of status quos being challenged, whether that be the real world, the historical world or specifically in the world of music. Rozzma won’t let you settle with what you believe. Everything deserves to be challenged.
