PRAISE JUAN WAUTERS

“If you want to tune into the real sound of New York, turn to Juan Wauters, an artist who captures the authentic mix of immigrants and POCs that breathe life into the city” – KCRW

“Smooth, quirky, full of good feeling, humour and pathos in his epic quest to diarise the world around him.” – NARC

“A festive love letter to New York that will leave you yearning for sunny weather and good company” – Remezcla

“There’s no one out there like Wauters, who for almost a decade has been merging North and South American folk sounds as the backdrop for his sometimes cryptic, sometimes plain, often ironic and playful verses” – RIFF

“A lot of fun” – FADER

“Honest and raw lyricism” – HYPEBEAST

“Uplifting” – The Line of Best Fit

Today, Juan Wauters releases new album Real Life Situations, featuring collaborations with Mac DeMarco, Homeshake, Nick Hakim, Cola Boyy, El David Aguilar, and more, via Captured Tracks / Remote Control Records. His fifth solo album, Real Life Situations is a delicate interplay between genre-hopping eclecticism and earnest, plain-spoken observation. Mining older songs, phone notes, new material, and snippets from TV and YouTube, he’s crafted an aural document of the year through his eyes. Jubilant choruses and spoken word poetry bleed into city noises and overheard conversations. Real freedom, the album suggests, comes not from gaining control, but from accepting its artifice. Listen to Real Life Situations here.

Until recently, Wauters had viewed his solo project as just that – a singular expression of his artistic vision. A trip through Latin America while recording his last album, however, laid the groundwork for a different approach. Inviting local musicians to contribute to the songs he was working on produced a collection unlike any of his previous work, infused with the musical traditions of each country he’d visited. As a result, 2018’s ‘La Onda De Juan Pablo’ and its follow-up, ‘Introducing Juan Pablo’, were Wauters’ most expansive and sonically diverse records to date, tracing both his Uruguayan roots and his travellers’ spirit. On Real Life Situations, he’s channeled this collaborative spirit, lending his chameleonic songwriting to experiments in hip-hop, lo-fi R&B, and deft indie-folk.

Real Life Situations is released digitally today and physically on May 14.

WHAT SO NOT & DMA’S COLLABORATE ON STRIKING TRACK

by the partae May 1, 2021
written by the partae

Today, What So Not (Chris Emerson) returns from a yearlong hiatus by releasing ‘The Change’, a striking, thunderous collaboration with fellow Australians DMA’S HERE.

View the enthralling futuristic video clip for ‘The Change’ HERE.

If the response to the then-unreleased song at recent Australian What So Not live shows is an indication of what’s to come – then we’re in for a long, energetic, and sweaty rest of 2021. The ferocious alt-rager ‘The Change’ was recorded in Sydney last year and is released now via Sweat It Out.

What So Not (Chris Emerson) says: “I met Johnny at their studio – a small room next to a noisy inner-city road, above a pub, with no sound insulation. We had (somehow) never met but clicked instantly, discussing life on the road, COVID & found commonality on our all-time favourite artists. The first thing we made is pretty much the track you hear. Johnny liked our little idea so much he decided to get the whole band involved a couple of days later we tracked Tommy & brought Mason in for some extra pieces. I feel like this record is one the two of us have always wanted to make but never had the right pieces of the puzzle, until now.”

Johnny Took from the DMA’S adds: “Emoh and I had never met before the day of our first session but quickly bonded over synths, production gear, The Chemical Brothers, The Prodigy and Underworld. Being from such different songwriting worlds really made this a great collaboration for me. Once we got Tommy and Mason on the track after that first day of writing we knew we were onto something special and new for both of us.”

About What So Not:
Australia’s What So Not (Chris Emerson) made his biggest, boldest statement yet with the release of Not All the Beautiful Things, the three-years-in-the-making debut artist album that reaffirmed What So Not’s place as one of the most ambitious, visionary producers in the game. Featuring collaborations with Skrillex, Slumberjack, San Holo, Michael Christmas, and legendary ‘Africa’ rockers Toto, the album spawned the hit ‘Be OK Again’ featuring Silverchair frontman Daniel Johns and earned praise from all corners, including NYLON (“a fully packaged, uncompromised artistic vision”). Not All The Beautiful Things was supported as a triple j featured album. What So Not supported the album with a yearlong 150 show tour through 45 countries that included stops at Ultra, Bonnaroo and Lollapalooza South America, all accompanied by the colossal chrome horse on monster truck wheels that graced the album’s cover. Since debuting in 2011, What So Not has garnered over 1 billion combined streams of his songs, which include such massive anthems as ‘High You Are‘, ‘Waiting’ with Skrillex and RL Grime, and his remix of RÜFÜS du Sol’s ‘Innerbloom‘. Already one of the most exciting live acts in electronic music, he further cemented that reputation when he brought out Silverchair’s Daniel Johns as a surprise guest during his set at Australia’s Laneway Festival, where the pair delighted fans with a new remix of the Silverchair classic ‘Freak.’ Most recently, he fulfilled a dream by remixing Run The Jewels ‘JU$T’ ft Pharrell Williams and Zack De La Rocha, at the start of 2021.

About DMA’S:
DMA’S (Tommy O’Dell, Matt Mason, Johnny Took) have gone from strength to strength since exploding onto the scene in 2014 with their debut single ‘Delete’. They have released two critically acclaimed albums – Hills End (2016) and For Now (2018) – both of which charted Top 10 in the ARIA Charts and resulted in ARIA nominations for Best Group, Best Rock Album and Best Independent Release. Forging their reputation abroad, the latter earned a #13 chart position in the UK as well as festival slots at Coachella, Lollapalooza, Glastonbury and Reading and Leeds festivals. 2019 saw the Sydney natives play sold out shows across the UK and Ireland, support Liam Gallagher’s UK arena tour and sell eight thousand tickets to their July Manchester show in a matter of hours. Back home they scored a Platinum record for ‘Delete‘ plus Gold discs for ‘Lay Down‘ and ‘Step Up The Morphine‘. The band’s third studio album, THE GLOW, was released 10 July 2020 and debuted at #2 on the ARIA Charts, #4 in the UK and #1 in Scotland.

[OUT NOW ON SWEAT IT OUT] Purple Disco Machine’s ‘Fireworks’ goes strength to strength with the release of an explosive remix package for the dance-floor filler. Purple Disco Machine staked his claim as one of the leading electronic producers in the world with the monstrous hit that was ‘Hypnotized’ a track that has been streamed over 250 million times across platforms, going triple Platinum in Italy, and Platinum in Poland and Switzerland. Purple Disco Machine has now followed up with his collaboration with Moss Kena and duo The Knocks, ‘Fireworks’ which has since followed in a similar vein dominating airwaves and amassing over 25 million streams across platforms since it’s release in February. Purple Disco Machine has now enlisted the services of some heavy hitters to add to the charm, with remixes from Torren Foot, Breakbot & Irfane, and a remix from Mind Enterprises out May 7th, keeping the summertime party rolling. On working on one of the biggest tracks of 2021, Torren Foot said, “Purple Disco Machine is one funky cat!! I was so stoked to be offered this opportunity. As soon as I heard the children’s choir in Fireworks, I knew exactly what I wanted to do. I’m looking forward to a crowd chanting this one back at me!” Australian producer Torren Foot takes the bright production and takes it for a tech-house spin, filled with a driving bassline relevant for those late-night raves as well as for those festival goers looking for an uptempo explosion to accompany their fireworks. Torren Foot is fresh off an immense 2020, a year that saw his bass-driven stylings transform and blow up into a worldwide success. The Australian producer has amassed over 26 million streams across platforms, with tracks such as ‘Be Randy’ with Dom Dolla earning him an ARIA Award nomination. Torren Foot’s release ‘More Life’ connected with Australian audiences like no other, surpassing the 10 million stream mark across platforms, while also becoming the #1 most played song on triple j, hitting the #1 spot in the Australian Viral Chart, and topping Beatport’s overall chart. Of course, the success of ‘More Life’ didn’t go unnoticed with UK stars Tinie Tempah and L Devine jumping on the track for a vocal version that transformed the single into a surefire summer hit and a global sensation. Versatile French producer Breakboat teams up with a man he’s all too familiar with in Irfane, to bring down the tempo but up the Nu-disco vibes for a mix that is full of funk and dreamy synths. The duo are known for their 2010 collaboration on ‘Baby I’m Yours’ a track that has amassed 400 million streams across platforms and become ever relevant in popular culture. Breakbot’s funk-fuelled stylings have seen him remix the likes of Lizzo, Digitalism, Chromeo, Sneaky Sound System, Pnau, MGMT, and Phoenix. Finally, fresh off their collaboration with Purple Disco Machine for ‘Exotica’, Mind Enterprises joins the party fashionably late, taking the summery vibes from the original and dialing it up with hypnotic drum patterns, and disco-adjacent basslines to keep up that poolside aura. ‘Exotica’ was released late last year and has amassed over 3 million streams. Experimental and funk, Mind Enterprises has found success with tracks such as ‘Idol’ and ‘Lover Boy’ as he blurs the lines of the modern day dancefloor. Purple Disco Machine has proven himself to be a global superstar with the release of ‘Hypnotized’ with Sophie and The Giants, a track that has gone triple platinum in Italy, achieved Platinum status in Poland and Switzerland, and become Gold accredited in Germany and Austria. With over 250 million streams across platforms and rapidly growing, there is no doubt Purple DIsco Machine has already made his mark on the industry. ‘Fireworks’ is proving to be just as much a global success since its release in February, amassing over 25 million streams across platforms and hitting #42 in the Global Shazam Chart, and well on its way to achieving the heights of ‘Hypnotized’. To say the track has dominated on airwaves would be an understatement, with over 170k spins in the last two months and hitting #5 in the European Airplay Chart, along with #2 in Italy, #3 in Germany and #10 in Poland. As the track continues to blow up, the remixes will be sure to add to the celebrations. Purple Disco Machine’s ‘Fireworks feat. Moss Kena & The Knocks (Remixes)’ is out now on Sweat It Out. Billy Reeves

Where are you currently based?

I’m currently based in Melbourne, VIC.

What’s been happening recently?

I’ve been setting up my new studio and producing for a few local acts.

Your new album ‘Biting The Life Nectar’ is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting for the album?

The main influences are the experiences that you hear about on the album, it influenced it even more than music I listen to.

How did you go about writing the music?

It took a lot of scrapping and starting again at points, I moved living spaces a few times while making the album so that definitely made it harder to concentrate. But in the end I’m really satisfied with how it turned out.

You’ve done an amazing job of self producing the entire album, where and when did you record/produce/master?

I started working on the beats for the album in late 2019 in my home studio, I recorded around different parts of Victoria as I was moving so much. I ended up making a few really awesome beats that I unfortunately couldn’t write anything on, the ones I wrote on worked for a reason though.

How did you approach the recording/production process?

I started recording the album in a booth in my old apartment but finished it in my bedroom at different apartment about 11 months later. I made every beat on my laptop with no additional gear since I didn’t own any instruments at the time.

What programs/equipment did you use?

I used a 2015 MacBook Pro to record and produce on Logic Pro DAW.

What did you find most challenging and rewarding throughout the period of producing?

The most challenging part by far was having things not work out how I imagined, not being able to play any instruments has its limitations. On the bright side the most rewarding parts of producing were working with so many session musicians and backing singers to bring my ideas to life.

How did you learn to self produce?

Back when I started producing in 2016 I learned the basics from this guy on YouTube called imamusicmogul, and self taught mostly after that. My strongest suit as a producer is building something grand out of a simple starting point.

You also shot your first music video, how did the concept come about?

I worked on the video with Josh Davis from Visionaire Media, it was a very organic collaborative process where some ideas were planned ahead and some we just improvised. I really love how the shots turned out, hoping to release the video some time soon.

You’ve released on vinyl for the first time as well, what are your thoughts on how your music sounds on vinyl and why did you choose to release on vinyl?

Vinyl can be tricky to get write so it was a bit of a process to get it sounding ideal, it sounds like something from 2021 and 1971 at the same time which is kinda trippy to me but I love it. I‘ve always wanted to do a proper vinyl release for an album and this was the perfect opportunity.

Where can we purchase the vinyl?

You can purchase it exclusively on my BandCamp page.

What do you like to do away from music?

Spending time with my partner and watching plenty of movies.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

Been bumping a lot of Mac Demarco and I’ve been getting really into The Avalanches.

What’s planned for 2021?

Since I’ve already dropped two projects this year I will probably just work behind the scenes on other peoples music for the rest of the year.

Favourite food and place to hangout?

I do love me a classic cheeseburger, I’m on a quest to find the best one in Melbourne. My favourite place to hang out at the moment is Fortress Tavern.

JXCKY Shows Off His Darker Side With The Primal ‘System’

by the partae May 1, 2021
written by the partae

His first 2021 release following his 2020 debut with quarantine slow-jam, ‘Lockdown Lover’ and summer break-up song, ‘What’s So Good About Brandon?’

Melbourne pop artist JXCKY isn’t afraid to embrace what goes on in the shadows. After the successful release of his break-up song What’s So Good About Brandon?, JXCKY wanted to embrace his primal side – the side that we often ignore. His new dark-pop single System sees JXCKY singing over pulsating, visceral production that’s a bit of a departure from his previous singles but shows off a side of JXCKY that fans might not have known exists.

From the opening notes of System, you’ll find yourself hypnotised by the bassline that’s set to put even the best speaker system to the test. If you’ve felt yourself within the clutches of someone that you didn’t want to be around anymore, then you’ll relate to JXCKY’s lyrical exorcism. He’s sick and tired of having his ex’s essence flowing through his veins, and it’s past time to become truly himself again.

Speaking about the track, JXCKY says he’s looking to wash himself clean of a past lover’s essence. “System marks the first time I’m dipping into that sinister, darker side of pop-rock. The track accentuates a growing desperation for closure and the need to cleanse one’s body free from that tight, lethal grip.” – Ben Madden

Chersea ‘Lets Talk About Love’ Premiere

by the partae April 30, 2021
written by the partae
Today, Chersea released her brand new single “Let’s Talk About Love” from her upcoming EP “Divine Comedy.” Divine Comedy has certainly been a humbling revelation for Chersea. From the cold introspective beginnings that characterized her debut “Grey Matter” with overtones spilling into her sophomore album “In Limbo”; Divine Comedy provides a new perspective of the person Chersea has become. Utilizing isolation and the feelings of navigating difficult relationships and healing from unrequited love, Chersea’s discourse has changed. It’s become dialogue and less of a poetic introspection.

It’s important that this time you can hear the love in the sentiments in the form of her comedic “divine”; where she expresses humility and the honesty of recognizing or misidentifying deception contributing to her faults. She recognizes however, that she doesn’t need everyone to like her, that she makes people uncomfortable, and that no matter what mess she tries to fix it can result in a bigger disaster. That is her Divine Comedy. Reaching a place of inner peace that ebbs between disdain and respect that is directly influenced by the interactions of others. This perpetual cycle  precedes her own existential crisis illuminated by the requirement of needing things others can’t provide. By pointing out her own failures through a series of dialogue she exposes the truth behind paradise: that it could just all be a joke after all, and that this joke could be the most defining measure of being human.

The Yule Brothers ‘I Am On Fire’ Premiere

by the partae April 30, 2021
written by the partae

There is no bond stronger than family; there is no feeling better than when a song hits just right. The Yule Brothers are a marriage of those simple concepts. Unbreakable and defiantly alternative, their anthemic style of Singer-Songwriter Indie Rock is genuine and bold. Born in the logging town of Prince George, BC, Canada Darby and Erin Yule have accomplished more in 7 years through pure-grit and a love for the craft than those with more at their disposal do in a lifetime.

In the summer of 2020, they went back into the studio with their friend Karl Dicare to do what they do best, record real and honest music. This time with a twist though; Darby and Erin were only going to work with their friends. No big names, no flashy studio musicians, just people they honestly loved being around. These new songs are made completely from the heart with a team that has as much passion as Darby and Erin do. Erin’s girlfriend Courtney even did the front cover. The Yule Brothers are pleased to announce their ambitious new single I Am On Fire, produced by Karl Dicare.

Skytech & Fafaq Reunite as All That MTRS for Funky Tech-House Single “Scrolling Up.” Out Now on CYB3RPVNK

Artists: Skytech, Fafaq pres. All That MTRS
Title: Scrolling Up
Label: CYB3RPVNK
Download / Stream

Skytech and Fafaq return to R3HAB‘s CYB3RPVNK platform with another hot collaboration under their joint alias All That MTRS. “Scrolling Up” is a cheeky play on society’s social media-checking habit, using a catchy vocal riff as the complement to the track’s funky, deep, but techy sound. The two talented Polish producers pull out the stops with growling synths and a minimal, driving bassline, making for a danceable track that is reminiscent of dark club dance floors. Skytech and Fafaq recently released “Lose Control” together with Saga Bloom as All That MTRS’ debut, and we look forward to seeing what else these two will put together in the future, so stay tuned!

Mateusz Dziewulski, better known by his artist name Skytech – is already a household name in his home country of Poland, and the rest of the world is soon to follow. His name first appeared on the map when R3HAB discovered his original track “Tiger” and then helped Skytech put final production touches on it, proving to be a winning team after “Tiger” skyrocketed to over 100M streams on all platforms. Since then, the two have worked on numerous tracks together via the CYB3RPVNK imprint, such as “Fuego,” “What You Do,” “Hyperspace,” “Starflight,” and more, fusing their sounds to make music that is club and festival-friendly while never sacrificing substance and soul.

Fafaq first erupted onto the scene in 2015-2016 with a series of popular releases on Spinnin’ Records, including “Tiger” with R3HAB, “Fever” and “Indigo” with Yves V, and “Pillowfight” with Bassjackers. His singles “Stay” and “Teenage Crime” were featured as the main theme of Tomorrowland Unite 2017 and Tomorrowland Winter 2019 after-movie. Fafaq returned after a long hiatus last summer with “I Want That House,” re-establishing himself as a force to be reckoned with. Keep an eye out for more music from your favorite and new CYB3RPVNK’s artists coming soon!

Where are you currently based?  Melbourne, Australia How did you first start playing music?  We have both been in the game for a few years now in different capacities, but together we’ve been making music together for about 6 months. How did Dubbel Drop form?  Born from a mutual love of disco loops, hot sauce, Belgian beer and of course the sesh! What's been happening recently?  Been booking in some gigs around Melbourne, working on new tunes and keepin’ it spicy on the reg. What influenced the sound and songwriting of Mighty Knight?  Too many influences to mention them all, but we definitely tout OGs such as Armand Van Helden, Cassius and Stardust as well as the likes of The Phantom’s Revenge, Duck Sauce, Boys Noize and Boston Bun as big vibes for our musical direction. How did you go about writing Mighty Knight?  We found the sample and worked it into a vibe we liked, instantly we felt this was something that would get booties shaking so we finished it off and played it to some trusted homies who all were going nuts about it - from there we knew we were onto something pretty special. Where and when did you record/produce/master and who did you work with?  We worked across Jeremy’s home studio and the label studio for different sessions in production, then our dude Alex Braithwaite went in on the mastering and absolutely nailed the sonics we wanted to a tee! How did you approach the recording process?  We didn't technically record anything on this track, it’s all synths and samples baby! What programs/equipment did you use?  Logic Pro. What do you like to do away from music?  Fine dining, watch Seinfeld and search for dank memes. Who are you listening to at the moment?  Buster: I’ve been bumping the new YSL album ’Slime Language 2’ a lot in the car since it dropped the other week. Also Folamour's Cover Mix for Mixmag which is very spicy!  Jeremy: Lately I’ve been bumping a fair bit of Riton and Anti Up and I follow The Magician's Magic Tapes pretty closely. The recent No. 100 is a banger I've thrashed a lot! What's planned for the remainder of 2021?  Playing some sick parties and putting out some more bangers, hopefully get an EP release out for Summer 21/22 Favourite food and place to hangout?  Oh damn this is a hard one!! INDIE-POP SINGER & SONGWRITER, JAKE STONE. RELEASES BRAND NEW MUSIC WITH SINGLE BROKEN LOVE

by the partae April 30, 2021
written by the partae

Melbourne-based indie-pop artist, Jake Stone, has today released his highly-anticipated new single, Broken Love.

The largely self-taught singer/songwriter last released a single in March 2019, You’d Be, and since then has been working on developing his own style and unique sound through creating new music. Jake is influenced by many artists and enjoys drawing on key characteristics from different genres to avoid being boxed into one specific sound, with inspiration for lyrics and vocal techniques coming from past and present greats such as Tupac, Dan Smith and Bastille.

Described as an exciting emerging talent, each of Jake’s songs provide an exclusive sound. Through his music he experiments with different dynamics, exploring indie-pop and electronica sounds combined with his own blend of soaring vocal hooks and seemingly flawless production, resulting in tracks that sound simultaneously familiar and fresh.

True to form, Jake’s new single, Broken Love, is yet another new sound than any he has produced before and, upon first listen, appears to be an unadorned love song. With lyrics such as ‘Treason for my, you’ve played me from the start” the listener can begin to appreciate the story Jake’s spellbinding vocals are giving away through the music. Broken Love is produced by Curtis Hatton and consists of complex layers of synths, guitars and heavy drums to create a unique pop sound.

Broken Love reaches new limits for Jake Stone and offers only a taste of what is still yet to come, cementing his place as one of Australia’s most promising upcoming artists.

INDII G. BY NICK DEMARAIS

Multi-talented, lo-fi hip-hop rapper, Indii G. shares his new standout track, “Cherry Blossom.” Shining with bright pianos, upbeat tempo, and catchy lyrics, the track showcases his knack for encompassing a range of genres from chill lo-fi hip hop to bedroom indie pop.

“This song to me encapsulates the feeling of meeting someone and falling in love. In it, I compare the girl to a one of my favourite flowers, a cherry blossom, because they’re rare and beautiful,” explains Indii. Each individual Cherry Blossom tree can hold their blossoms for about a week depending on weather conditions, making their extraordinary beauty a sight to behold. “The Cherry Blossom video is probably my favourite yet,” adds Indii. “Nick and Pat, the directors, did a great job building sets that portray the fantasy like feeling of the song with an abundance of cherry blossoms to match. The shoot overall was just a whole lot of fun and I can’t wait for more.”

“At just 19, Brian is dropping thoughtful, lyrically dense rhymes.”
UPROXX

“The 88rising mainstay’s sophomore effort effectively solidifies his position in the world of hip-hop, building up his character as a force to be reckoned with.”

Today rapper, producer, singer, and songwriter, Rich Brian has dropped a new official video for ‘Sydney‘. Watch it HERE.

Directed by Bludshot and Grace Lee, the music video for ‘Sydney‘ finds Rich Brian in a surreal but beautiful setting. The serene nature of Brian’s surroundings in the music video, with its still, wide shots provide the perfect backdrop for the song’s lyrics, which illustrate the high-flying lifestyle Brian has grown into over the years. In his trajectory from a YouTube bedroom sensation in Jakarta, into an Asian music icon, he reflects on how he learned over the years to care less about his doubters and focus more on his career, lifestyle and next steps.

Following the release of his highly celebrated project 1999, Rich Brian dropped ‘Sydney‘ as his first single of 2021. It has garnered over 7.4 Million streams to date. The track was released via 88rising, distributed by 12Tone Music LLC. Listen to it HERE. With a beat inspired by hip-hop group Three 6 Mafia, ‘Sydney‘ blends Rich Brian’s signature deep vocals and laid back flow with some saxophone thrown in, thus once again displaying the artist’s ability to constantly shapeshift and reinvent his sound.

Last month, ‘Sydney‘ served as the new anthem for the PUBG MOBILE Pro League Southeast Final. PUBG MOBILE is a mobile gaming application with over 30 million active daily users and over 700M+ downloads per year, making this a huge moment for the Southeast Asia gaming community.

This past year, Rich Brian released 1999. The EP is a sonically diverse project born out of months of social isolation, with the majority of it both self-written and produced, including features from Louis Bell, Bekon & The Donuts and Santell on production. 1999 received praise from outlets like HotNewHipHop, Hypebeast, UPROXX, Genius and Complex. To date, Rich Brian has garnered over 2.4 Billion streams.

‘Sydney‘ by Rich Brian is out now via 88rising/12Tone Music,

Where are you currently based?

I’m living in Sydney, Australia.

How did you first start playing music?

When I was young my Uncle would always play the piano and drums and put awesome music on and I loved it and just knew I wanted to make music.

What’s been happening recently?

I’ve just released my debut EP that I was working on for the past year so I’m so happy to have it out in the world now! I have 2 more music videos for it to release over the next couple of weeks. I’m now working on a few new songs that I plan to release this year. I’m also currently rehearsing for my first gig after releasing my latest music so I’m excited for that!

Your new self-titled three track EP is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting?

I drew a lot of influence from some of my favourite artists old and new. Lana Del Rey and Solange are big influences. I also looked to a lot of old favourites of mine such as Massive Attack, Sade, Fleetwood Mac. I listen to their songs daily and I love how easy listening they are. I had just returned from a trip to Europe so I was living for the summertime which you can definitely tell with the songs being so summery haha. Cala Gonone was one of my favourite places I visited in Italy and I wrote that song in like 20mins! It just flowed out of me. On & On was about a break through in my music and self confidence. Summer Lover is literally describing summer when I was a kid with an added romance.

How did you go about writing the EP?

I wrote about 8-9 songs in my room with basic production to the vibe that I wanted. I took 4 of my favourite ones to my favourite Producers to turn them into what they are today!

Where and when did you record/produce/master and who with?

I demoed them all in my room toward the end of 2019 to early 2020. On & On was recorded before and after lockdown with Matt Hurt in his Balmain studio. Matt and I have been working together for a long time and he knows me really well so he always gets my vibe. Cala Gonone I took to Alex Preston as we had released a couple of tracks together at the time. We recorded that in his home studio in Dee Why. Summer Lover was the last one to finish and I reached out to Xavier Dunn to work with me on this one as I loved his sound and thought he would do a great job with it and he did! Peter Holz did the mastering for me. He’s also mastered my songs Forever Young and Seeing you again in the past.

How did you approach the recording process?

Firstly it was important for me to work on the sound and vibe that I wanted to put out to the world. I listened to a lot of songs to figure out what I liked most about the songs I loved. Once I had these demos it was simply matching the songs to the most suited Producer and sitting with them through the process making sure the direction stayed on track and also a lot of inspiration came whilst in the production process too.

Your EP features the single On & On, how did this track come about and what does it mean to you?

It was the first song I wrote on the EP and it came at a time when I had decided to stop holding myself back and gain the confidence to produce the demo’s myself and really find who I wanted to be as an artist and so this song just came very naturally with that state of mind and new goal I had set myself. I’ve always struggled with my self confidence and can be very shy. I’d say I’m a bit of an extroverted introvert haha. So this song really resonates with me.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

I’m loving Joy Crookes, Cleo Sol, Snoh Allegra, Clairo, Pip Millet and The Internet to name a few. I think you could definitely hear my songs aligning with these vibes.

What do you like to do away from music?

I love to travel, spend time with my friends and family. I love a night out but also love a day on the couch watching movies! It’s all about balance!

What’s planned for 2021?

More music and more live gigs! I have a couple of songs in the works. My first live performance of my EP is coming up  30th of May and I’m so excited for this! I’m wanting to do more live shows this year!

Favourite food and place to hangout?

I’m obsessed with Pad Thai and basically all pasta! I love to hang out at the beach or in a bar/restaurant at sunset with the people I love.

ALFA MIST NEW ALBUM BRING BACKS OUT NOW ON ANTI- RECORDS

ALFA MIST “BRING BACKS”
FBI RADIO ALBUM OF THE WEEK

“a beautifully meditative and sumptuously produced body of work” – Loud & Quiet (UK) 7/10

“Alfa Mist presents an extraordinarily contemplative album, even for the already vibrant young London jazz scene, that sensually reflects on the search for meaning.” – Musikexpress (DE) 5/5

“Intensely dynamic” – Tip Berlin (DE) 5/5

“”Bring Backs” contains nine tracks that will make you change your mind about the state of jazz as a “dead language”.” Billboard (IT)

“a fascinating combination of jazz, hip-hop and soul” – Mania (NL)

London based producer, pianist, bandleader and MC Alfa Mist releases his acclaimed fourth full-length album Bring Backs, out now via ANTI-.

To celebrate the launch of the album, Alfa played a free-to-view concert, streamed live on YouTube last night. Recorded in the legendary Metropolis Studios, the show sees Alfa play through the new album accompanied by a full 12 piece band – a full list of players and guests performing is below.

LISTEN TO CURRENT SINGLE ‘TEKI’ HERE

Latest single ‘Teki’ is the opening track of Bring Backs and the third single to be taken from the album. Earlier this month Alfa released a solo session version of previous single ‘Organic Rust’ with COLORS (watch HERE), while the album’s first single ‘Run Outs’ earned a B List placement at BBC Radio 6 Music.

Bring Backs marks Alfa’s first release for the label ANTI- and is also the most detailed exploration of his upbringing in musical form. The album’s nine tracks of groove-based intricacies, lyrical solipsism and meandering fragmentations are tied together by a remarkable poem written by Hilary Thomas expressing the sensuous realities of building community in a new country. Entirely written and produced by Alfa, the album was recorded in London with a core band of longtime collaborators including Jamie Leeming (guitar), Kaya Thomas-Dyke (bass and vocals) and Johnny Woodham (trumpet).

Over the past 5 years Alfa has steadily established himself as one of the most dynamic and consistent talents to emerge from London’s widely celebrated jazz reformation. Building on long standing affiliations with the likes of breakout star Jordan Rakei, Alfa has always carved his own lane, following a distinctly outsider’s approach and free from the trappings of a traditional musical training. Having arrived at jazz in search of samples for his teenage hip-hop productions, Alfa eventually taught himself piano by ear and quickly developed a unique style, with hip-hop rhythms driving throughout the improvisational forms, all bound by a pervasive sense of melody. His first three solo albums ‘Nocturne’ (2015), ‘Antiphon’ (2017) and ‘Structuralism’ (2019) were all released on his own label Sekito, and were interspersed with countless collaborations and side projects, highlighting a prolific work ethic and true versatility across piano, rapping and production that has established Alfa at the centre of an amorphous cohort of talented musicians to emerge from London.

‘Bring Backs, Live at Metropolis Studios’ Band Lineup

Band: Alfa Mist – Keys, Kaya Thomas-Dyke – Bass/Double Bass, Samuel Rapley – Tenor Sax/Bass Clarinet, Jas Kayser – Drums, Jamie Leeming – Guitar, Junior Alli-Balogun – Percussion, Johnny Woodham – Trumpet/Flugel
