PRAISE FOR CLOWNS

“‘Does It Matter?’ closes out with showy guitar work that evokes the late, great Eddie Van Halen. These blistering riffs underscore repeated affirmations–“Does it matter?/It doesn’t ma-tter, NO!”–which just beg to be belted out en masse in a live setting.”
Hysteria Magazine“From the ashes of all that horrible bullshit rises this very catchy and very cool new song. Well, ‘Does It Matter?’ Fuck yeah it does. Their last album was a monster of an album and if this song is anything to go by, the next one should be a blinder.”

Wall Of Sound“Indignation never sounded like such a party! Whether they’re dealing with broken strings at the gig, twisted ankles in the bowl or a flawed socio-economic system, Clowns have the best time going at it with full speed.”
Triple J Unearthed, Dave Ruby Howe

“This might be my fave Clowns song – it’s a heap of fun and had me craving jumping up and down at a festival again pls and thank you.”
Triple J, Declan Byrne

“The perfect example of what hard work and a handy dose of wit can do if you stick to your guns.”
The Age

Joining Clowns on tour will be Sydney’s C.O.F.F.I.N at all dates except July 31st and in October, which will see Clowns head north for Alice Springs’ Blacken Open Air Festival and then out to Brisbane for Halloween Hysteria at the Mansfield Tavern!

When Clowns go in, they go in hard. And that’s exactly what their new single ‘Does It Matter?’ has done, and then some.

The return of the beloved Melbourne punks has come at the most perfect of times – especially for those in their home state – providing music for those wishing to purge and expel the pent up frustration and energy from over the last year.

Continuing to propel this momentum forward, Clowns are excited to bring their new slice of heat to venues around the country this July and August, giving fans their first opportunity in over a year to throw down and get that electric live Clowns experience back in their lives.

Along with the tour announcement comes news of a special Clowns live streamed event – Livestreamed and Dangerous – coming up this June. Filmed at 170 Russell in Melbourne, Clowns were able to perform a one-off gig to a crowd of 500 hungry gig goers, ready to get at it after a year of being locked down.

As you can imagine, it was one for the books. A shining return to form, Clowns proved they were back and ready to take a well overdue bite out of live music. Think of the show as a primer for the tour to come. For more information on this unmissable show, visit the official website.

JOE TERROR RELEASES ‘DEA’ FT. HOLLIE JOYCE – THE FIRST SINGLE FROM FORTHCOMING ALBUM ‘QUEEN OF SMILES, BLUES & THE DEVIL’

written by the partae

MELBOURNE, Australia. May 31st, 2021 // Out June 4th, ‘Dea’ is the first release from multi-instrumentalist Joe Terror’s forthcoming sixth full-length album; ‘Queen of Smiles, Blues & the Devil’ – set for release in late 2021. An ode to vilified women throughout history, ‘Dea’ features the powerful spoken word vocals of singer-songwriter Hollie Joyce, who collaborated with Terror on both the lyrical and conceptual elements of the track.

Recorded in isolation during the strict Melbourne lockdown of 2020, Terror and Joyce were forced to complete their corresponding parts – Terror on all instruments, and Joyce on vocals – from their separate home studios, trading ideas over the internet without physical interaction. Instead of the lack of in-person contact acting as a hindrance, Joyce and Terror were empowered to vivify the track with their own volitional comprehension of its impassioned namesake.

Sonically, ‘Dea’ blends elements of psych, garage, punk and progressive rock; with distorted riffs, haunting vocals and explosive drums which build ferociously, propelling the track forward at full steam. In Terror’s own words:

“For ‘Dea’, I had planned on making a groove heavy instrumental rock track, because at the time I was listening to a lot of heavy rock music. I wanted, more or less, to capture the kind of essence that Lobby Loyde or Civic push out but funk up the rhythm section and take away the seriousness that tends to come with bashing away. I suppose I was trying to make rock songs that were more fun and dance friendly than I would normally make, but it still came out pretty intense once Hollie was done with it.”

Featured throughout are Joyce’s powerfully poetic lyrics, which read like an ancient mythological fable told through the defiant lense of punk rock. Belting out dark soliloquies with deep visceral conviction, Joyce illuminates the perils (and resilience) of women from ancient Rome to the modern day, matching the tension-soaked soundscape with emancipated declarations. Speaking on the writing process, Joyce remarks:

“I recorded a lot of backing vocals as I thought the track was going to be a fully instrumental piece with vocal embellishments, but towards the end, Terror asked if I wanted to incorporate spoken word into the mix. While I hadn’t done this in my music before, I thought it would work really well for ‘Dea’, and so the track as it stands was born.”

Inspired by the concept of Terror’s forthcoming album ‘Queen of Smiles, Blues and the Devil’, Joyce’s research during the song-writing process led her down a rabbit hole of powerful female figures in mythology and religion, and the inevitable demonization in which they faced at the hands of the patriarchy. The accompanying visuals, in which Joyce stands atop a pile of naked men, is both a statement of sacred rebellion and a tribute to the women who have conquered in the battle against women’s oppression throughout the ages. In Joyce’s own words:

“The men are naked because I wanted to address the historical objectification of women through role reversal. They are contorted because I wanted it to look like a piece of art resembling Greek and Roman mythology. I liked the idea of creating a scene that challenged the classic roman renaissance aesthetic, displaying men holding me up in an abstract way which is exposed and vulnerable, rather than one of worship.”

The single launch for Dea will take place at The Old Bar Fitzroy on Friday the 18th of June with Joe Terror, Hollie Joyce and Confusion In Colour. $15 entry on the door.

PHILADELPHIA MUSICIAN, POET AND VISUAL ARTIST MOOR MOTHER AKA CAMAE AYEWA SIGNS TO ANTI- RECORDS

The Philadelphia-based Moor Mother – AKA Camae Ayewa – has signed to ANTI- Records. Moor Mother is a holographic figment of an Afrotopian dream, all at once goddess and warrior, mystic and cyborg, griot and future time traveler, etching noisy pieces of reverie into our consciousness for decades now.

Today she has released the piercing new track “Zami”; produced by her frequent collaborator Madam Data, listen to the track and watch its new video HERE.

“ ‘No more master’s clock / we travel spaceways’; “Zami” speaks to a number of different themes,” Ayewa explains. “Using the lenses of Black Quantum Futurism, the lyrics speak to Time and Space, injustice, racism, erasure of African identity. “Zami” speaks of agency and something beyond freedom. It speaks of another future. It speaks about connections free from the stains of colonialism. It speaks about the expansive temporalities of Afro Diasporan people around the world.”

Released in 2016, Moor Mother’s debut album Fetish Bones was named the third best album of the year by The Wire, called “one of the most innovative and important records of 2016” by Jazz Right Now, and appeared on numerous end-of-the-year lists from Pitchfork, Noisey, Rolling Stone, and Spin. She was also named one of Rolling Stone’s “10 New Artists You Need To Know” as well as one of Bandcamp’s 2016 artists of the year.

She has released multiple albums every year since Fetish Bones. In 2017, CTM X Vinyl Factory commissioned her album The Motionless Present; this was followed by Crime Waves, a collaboration with fellow Philly producer Mental Jewelry, and Clepsydra, “a collection of sounds for writers.”

A touring musician, poet, visual artist, and workshop facilitator, Ayewa is also a vocalist in three collaborative performance groups: Irreversible Entanglements, MoorJewelry and 700bliss. In 2020, she launched a series of releases with Swedish musician Olof Melander. Titled Anthologia, the projects are designed to raise funds for disability justice. She worked again with Melander and Mental Jewelry on Forever Industries, a 2020 release which features two jazz-tinged experimental hip-hop singles that speak of making space, outer space, and industry. Most recently, Ayewa put out BRASS, a collaboration with the rapper billy woods. She has previously worked with woods on his critically acclaimed 2020 album Shrines and on the song “Furies,” which was featured on the Adult Swim single series.

SINGER-SONGWRITER JOEY CAPE ANNOUNCES REFLECTIVE AND LYRICALLY RICH SOLO ALBUM A GOOD YEAR TO FORGET OUT AUGUST 13 VIA FAT WRECK CHORDS

by the partae June 6, 2021
written by the partae
Photo: Athena Lonsdale

The time Joey Cape spent with his parents over the past year didn’t just allow him to reconnect with them; it also afforded him time to write songs. Because recording studios were shutting down everywhere due to COVID, Cape got creative and turned the “cabana-type thing” he was living in into a home recording studio. “I just decided that if I was going to make a record like this, I should make it in full isolation,” he says. “I have a Murphy bed, so every morning I’d push up the bed, pull out the studio stuff, have some coffee or tea, get out my little chair and off I went.”

Despite Cape’s isolation while writing A Good Year To Forget, his fans will hear much more than just a voice, guitar and bass on this record. Indeed, he ended up playing a plethora of instruments when recording the album, including electric and lap steel guitars, piano, mandolin and drums.

LISTEN TO FIRST SINGLE “IT COULD BE REAL”

“I almost made a solo record alone,” he laughs. “But that great fun you have in collaborating with other people in the studio is just priceless. There’s always something positive you can find–something of redeeming value in an experience where there’s a struggle of suffering. I played everything because I reached a point where I realised that’s something I’d have to hold onto if it was going to be the record I wanted and set out to make. It forced things to be very basic, but I’m okay with that.”

A Good Year To Forget seeks to find the positive in the negatives to become a record of pure triumphant beauty. Hushed and haunted, there’s an almost Nick Drake-ian poignancy to these 12 songs, especially on the wistful “The Poetry Of Our Mistakes” and the forlorn-yet-somehow-uplifting “Saturday Night Fever.” “Come Home,” a song inspired directly by the words his mother had spoken on the phone, is a beautifully melancholic, slightly folky tune full of hurt and longing that also manages to be reassuring at the same time.

Elsewhere, “Under The Doormat” is a harrowingly beautiful ode to a lost love of the past. “Check Your Ego At The Door” is a ballroom lament steeped in timelessness, while “Fictional” is a scornful take on the false images and lives that proliferate on social media.

“By any standard, 2020 was a bad year,” Cape says. “This record has truly distilled my own experience of the past year, what I’ve learned and what I’ve felt. It feels right and I’m very proud of the result.”

Fat Wreck Chords will release A Good Year To Forget on August 13, 2021.

Egyptian-Australian artist Mariam Sawires returns today with ‘Trust’, the latest single to be lifted from her new EP Healer, for release this July 2. LISTEN HERE.

Where the previously released ‘Meaning Of Our Love’ was inspired by stories of the past, ‘Trust’ is an exercise in belief and overcoming skepticism. Also produced by Konstantin Kersting (Tones And I, Mallrat, Jungle Giants), the single was written after the globetrotting singer-songwriter returned home to Warrang/Sydney, Sawires dedicates ‘Trust’ to a close friend’s relationship that she observed every tumultuous step of the way, for the better part of a decade. “They fought then jumped for joy, then cried then ignored each other for weeks until they made up again,” the vocalist shares. “I witnessed my friend’s tears, joy, anger, and everything in between.”

Through their time together, Mariam found herself extremely taken by their growth from having no faith in each other, to finally falling in ‘trust’ together. It’s these emotions Sawires channels in ‘Trust’, originally pieced together in Milan Ring’s studio. “The thing that inspired me most to write the song was her transition of having no trust with him to finally coming at peace within herself and learning to trust him, herself and the relationship, which had always stemmed from fear not love.” Lyrically Sawires shifts from anxiousness to the excitement, bitterness to closeness, and doubt to complete and utter faith – it’s through this journey that her friend is now happier than ever, planning a future with her soul mate.

Like ‘Trust’, much of Mariam Sawires forthcoming EP is dedicated to the process of process and healing. With Healer, Sawires shares the lessons learned throughout her life, travels, and professional relationships. In taking the time to re-group and process, Sawires has produced an EP dedicated to these experiences. She reveals, “Everyone has a ‘healer’ within themself – it’s important to channel and nurture the Healer within, through what medium feels right.” Stay tuned for Healer, the new Mariam Sawires EP out this July 2.

PRAISE FOR MYKKI BLANCO

“Mykki Blanco helped make rap a more exciting place with their debut 10 years ago – everything about them, from style to sound to presence forced hip-hop fans to reconfigure what truly rebellious art looked like, and whether or not they could handle it.”
FADER

“one of the most arresting leftfield artists to have emerged in the last decade”
British GQ Style

“Apparently influenced by Luther Vandross, the rapper’s return is a joyous, tumbling Hudson Mohawke-co-produced pleasure”
The Guardian

“one of the most original, unpredictable artistic voices to emerge over the last decade”
BILLBOARD

Ready for the heat? Mykki Blanco and Kari Faux bring the ghosts of Y2K all the way into the 21st century on their new track ‘Summer Fling‘ which was inspired by the millennium musical production of Missy Elliot and Timbaland.

Mykki reveals, “I wanted ‘Summer Fling’ to feel like a song I could have heard at my middle school dance, maybe it’s because those were the years in which I was coming of age. Y2K aesthetics still influence me heavily at some point in the creation of my songs. I always feel like the Y2K vibe haunts its way into the room and makes its presence felt on my records. “Summer Fling” is essentially about ghosting someone, it’s a playful song about the weird ups and downs of dating. I loved writing this song and it got even better when I recruited rapper and vocalist Kari Faux to be on the track. Kari’s delivery is slick and charged up, she takes no prisoners with her bars. She adds a layer of bravado and feminine mystique to the song. In addition to her verse that she wrote, she also contributed to the writing of the hook.”

‘Summer Fling’ is the latest single ahead of Mykki’s highly awaited mini-album, Broken Hearts & Beauty Sleep, which will be released on Transgressive Records on June 18, 2021, via all DSPs. the physical formats will be available on October 1, 2021. It marks Blanco’s first official release in nearly five years since their debut full-length Mykki album.

It’s been just over a decade since the moniker ‘Mykki Blanco’ was created – first as a video art project portraying a teenage female character (inspired by Lil Kim’s ‘Kimmy Blanco’ alter ego) posting vlogs and raps on social media, but it inevitably evolved into a vehicle of self-discovery in the artist’s journey of forming their personal self-identity.

They have pushed hip-hop to some of its most untethered bounds, melding noise and experimental elements with club and trap sounds, whilst also forging a uniquely subversive path within a genre historically entangled in a problematic ideological web of misogyny, homophobia, and transphobia. And while Blanco has been widely recognized as leading the charge as a pioneering trailblazer in the so-called ‘queer rap’ sub-genre, the music of this forthcoming new chapter of their career represents such significant musical evolution toward eradicating the confines of genre categories and mashing the previous perception of the ceiling of their potential reach.

Mykki’s desire to elevate their artistry provided the lifeblood for Broken Hearts & Beauty Sleep. To that end, the unique partnership they formed with producer FaltyDL – one that has been continuous since they first found themselves collaborating in 2018 – was instrumental in the creative process surrounding the mini-album. With Blanco penning the majority of the lyrics, FaltyDL produced nearly all the music. Samples became a thing of the past, and, in their place, original sounds and layers would prevail.  Creative energy was also found with the boldfaced names that contributed to the making of Broken Hearts & Beauty Sleep including ‘It’s Not My Choice‘ which features Blood Orange. Two of the LP’s tracks feature lyrical collaborations – Big Freedia contributed to ‘That’s Folks‘ and ‘Summer Fling‘ was co-written by Kari Faux. All of these collaborations are as organic as they come with each guest being a genuine fan, if not friend or even family, of Blanco. Collectively they add unique flourishes, but the spirit of the mini-album is all their own.

Blanco’s evolution and road to Broken Hearts & Beauty Sleep reflects an artist who has never been more in touch with their creative impulses and never more ready to bask in the magic of their own creativity. Mykki says, “For me, I am one of those artists who many would say has taken the longer road to get to where I am now, but it’s that journey which has been the reward because the journey really has been my life; the career has just been the outer shell to the deeper things that I’ve experienced, and I can only be here now because of this journey.”

APATE RELEASE NEW SINGLE “DANCING ON THE RAZOR’S EDGE”

by the partae June 6, 2021
written by the partae

Rage is set for release on June 25 via Human Warfare Records

Brisbane metalcore crew APATE have delivered their new single “Dancing On The Razor’s Edge” – the final piece of new music before their EP, Rage, drops on June 25 via Human Warfare.

Much like its predecessors “Gasoline Anthem” and “Under My Skin”, APATE’s latest single “Dancing On The Razor’s Edge” continues to smash through the boundaries of metalcore, delivering another cut that embraces both the genre innovation APATE are building their name on while retaining the nostalgia of early 2000s nu-metal.

Vocalist/guitarist Caleb Patch explains: “Dancing On The Razor’s Edge was the last song we sorted out. It’s super hooky and I think reflects how well we worked together in the studio after being crammed in there together for months. Lyrically it came from a place of uncertainty with where we were as a band before we got in the studio to record Rage. We knew music was what we wanted to do, but we felt stuck as a band and uncertain of our future. It’s a bit melancholic but shows a glimmer of hope. We weren’t even sure if this record would see the light of day, but as it all came together, we knew we had to put our all into music and give it the best shot we could.”

Growing into their patchworked sonic skin, APATE are a band who bleed out their experiences, with their songs reflecting a chaos of the mind. APATE’s upcoming EP Rage sees the collective advance even further, having honed their songwriting to create six tracks that serve an explosive catharsis for the band. A visceral warts and all insight to the darkest times of the co-frontmen, every emotion is thoroughly purged through cataclysmic song sections expertly produced by Sean Delander (Thy Art Is Murder) at Sledgehammer Studio.

On the live front, APATE recently completed a mini sold out east coast run, leaving a lasting impression on all in attendance, and will appear at Halloween Hysteria later this year.

INTRODUCING SUPERCHORUS WITH ‘BACK ONLINE’ ANNOUNCES DEBUT EP OUT JUNE 17

Meet Superchorus, DIY indie project of David Gauci who today debuts ‘Back Online‘, the title track from his forthcoming EP. LISTEN + WATCH HERE.

David Gauci’s tenure as a key figure in the Warrang / Sydney scene as a former member of Hatchie, Death Bells, and most notably in electronic pop trio GAUCI, has extended the better part of a decade. Cutting his teeth as a regular touring guitarist across enough outfits to lose count of, today David stands as a dedicated participant of the local indie scene who overtime found himself more and more drawn to reflecting on his inner thoughts and feelings, and a desire to stand on his own.

As Superchorus, David threads together the sonic influences of Arcade Fire and Blur brought up on a love of My Bloody Valentine, re-imagined contemporarily like Alex G and Snail Mail. ‘Back Online‘ is the first piece of David’s demo trove, illustrating his ability to take the bedroom to the studio by way of a lovelorn, jubilant jaunt inspired by our lives on the internet. Layered between dirty guitar loops and tight processed drums chugging along, are contemplative lyrics that assess new beginnings and missed connections. With the release comes a music video directed and produced by Passive Kneeling, watch below.

David shares, “Back Online was one of the first few songs I wrote while working on this EP, with the lyrics allowing for reflection on appearance and relationships, and the whole notion of being “online” in this day and age. The concept of time explored in this internet age is all about being there and present and glued to your phone, but sometimes you’ve got to take a break. It feels like the beginning of a new era for me, really helping me understand that what I’ve wanted has been in front of me the whole time, and I just had to go and get it.”

As the title track of his forthcoming EP, David teases this same journey of self reflection across Back Online, exploring loneliness, unrequited love and more across five tracks. What sets Superchorus apart from the crowd is David’s driving passion to share music that’s there for you through everything, whether it be times of joy or to lean on through moments of sadness, to express what you wished you could to someone else, or to give assurance to your deepest thoughts. Superchorus promises to share this and more with Back Online, out this June 17.

Multi-Gold and Platinum punk rock band RISE AGAINST is back with a provocative and dynamic new album, Nowhere Generation, the group’s first new studio effort in four years. On the upcoming release, the outspoken band points a finger at big business and politics for stacking the social and economical deck against Millennials', Gen Y’s, and Gen Z’s pursuit of The American Dream. Musically, the album is blazing, aggressive punk rock; lyrically, the eleven songs were inspired in part by input from band members' young children and Rise Against’s community of fans. Said McIlrath,“Today there is the promise of the American Dream, and then there is the reality of the American Dream.  America’s 'historical norm' that the next generation will be better off than the one that came before has been diminished by an era of mass social, economic, and political instability and a sell-out of the Middle Class.  The brass ring that was promised by hard work and dedication no longer exists for everyone. When the privileged climb the ladder of success and then burn it from the top, disruption becomes the only answer.” Rise Against - McIlrath, Joe Principe/bass, Brandon Barnes/drums, and Zach Blair/lead guitar - recorded Nowhere Generation at The Blasting Room in Fort Collins, Colorado, under the tutelage of Jason Livermore, Andrew Berlin, Chris Beeble, and long-time producer/engineer Bill Stevenson (Black Flag, The Descendents). Stevenson has worked with the band on nearly all of their acclaimed releases since their sophomore effort, 2003’s Revolutions Per Minute, and is often described as Rise Against’s fifth member. “Bill is our not-so-secret weapon,” Principe explained.“He really has helped shape the band; he gets what we want to do and will go with us when we think outside the box. He’s the perfect producer for the style of music we play because he has an insane pop sensibility and the hardcore side to him as well."   In addition to the communal call to arms embedded in Nowhere Generation’s dynamic title track, there’s the fast and furious anti-establishment manifesto Broken Dreams, Inc., the moody ballad Forfeit, Sudden Urge, a true nod to the band’s rock’n’roll side with an overall punk-vibe, the simplicity of The Numbers with a melody that will stick in your head, and the surprise pop candor in Talking To Ourselves, a standout song about wanting to be heard and wondering if anyone is listening. “It describes a lot of what Rise Against does,” says McIlrath, “to speak and scream when we feel there are things that are happening that aren’t being addressed."  “When I was growing up,” said Principe, “I listened to bands like 7 Seconds, Bad Brains, Minor Threat, and Bad Religion. All of those bands’ music had a sense of hope with the world, a truly positive global view of what life can be. From the beginning, we’ve wanted Rise Against to have that same positivity, to have our music be an inspiration for people to bring about change in their own lives, they just have to put forth the effort and speak up.”

Rise Against ‘Nowhere Generation’ Out Now

RISE AGAINST
NOWHERE GENERATION
RELEASE DATE: FRIDAY 4 JUNE
(LOMA VISTA RECORDINGS)

“We are the Nowhere Generation…We are the kids that no one wants
We are a credible threat…To the rules you set…A cause to be alarmed.”

“I’ve come to realize that people want honesty and that music can be a catalyst for change.  I think in many ways, we’ve been on a mission to rile people up, and I feel very lucky to be able to do that.  Our hope on this record is to jostle people awake, even it if makes you uncomfortable.”— Tim McIlrath

Multi-Gold and Platinum punk rock band RISE AGAINST is back with a provocative and dynamic new album, Nowhere Generation, the group’s first new studio effort in four years. On the upcoming release, the outspoken band points a finger at big business and politics for stacking the social and economical deck against Millennials’, Gen Y’s, and Gen Z’s pursuit of The American Dream. Musically, the album is blazing, aggressive punk rock; lyrically, the eleven songs were inspired in part by input from band members’ young children and Rise Against’s community of fans.

Said McIlrath,“Today there is the promise of the American Dream, and then there is the reality of the American Dream.  America’s ‘historical norm’ that the next generation will be better off than the one that came before has been diminished by an era of mass social, economic, and political instability and a sell-out of the Middle Class.  The brass ring that was promised by hard work and dedication no longer exists for everyone. RAT CITY REVEAL NEW TRACK ‘RATHER BE’ WITH ISAK HEIM OUT ON JUNE 4 VIA SONY MUSIC NORWAY

by the partae June 4, 2021
written by the partae
Having already garnered more than 35 million Spotify streams on ‘Kind of Love’, their first collaboration together, award-winning producers Rat City and Isak Heim have proven to be a strong team when it comes to creating catchy pop songs. They now return with summer banger ‘Rather Be’. Out on all platforms Friday June 4th.

The track was created last summer, but there’s no negative vibes from the pandemic here. It all started on a zoom session with the Canada-based songwriter Faouzia (John Legend, David Guetta, Kelly Clarkson etc.), followed by several online sessions with the songwriter Autumn Rowe (Dua Lipa, Ava Max, Pitbull, Leona Lewis etc.) before Isak Heim added the final touches and a killer lead vocal. This was Rat City’s first time starting a track via Zoom, something that became a necessity for many writers over the last 18 months, and they describe the process as “unique, and surprisingly a lot of fun!”.

Rat City produced Dagny’s track ‘Somebody’ which won her both Track of the Year at P3 Gull 2020 (P3 is equivalent to BBC Radio 1) and was nominated for Song of the Year at Spellemann 2020 (the Norwegian Grammys). Their debut artist single ‘Kind of Love’ catapulted to #1 on Shazam and #1 on Norwegian radio for 7 consecutive weeks. Crossing well over 50 million combined streams, and spending 20 weeks on Spotify’s top 20 chart. The band has also collaborated with major talents such as Kiesza and Tungevaag, and Rick the Kid.
Based in Norway, Rat City are completing work on their debut album which is expected to be released prior to the end of the year.

“This is so great, a mesmerising and consuming mix of rootsy acoustic sounds in a spacious electronic world.” – 4/5 stars
Declan Byrne – triple j (AUS)

Gold Coast-based electronic-dance outfit Tijuana Cartel have just revealed their exuberant new record ‘Acid Pony’ – produced by band members Carey O’Sullivan and Paul George.

‘Acid Pony’ is seven tracks of mind-altering guitar-driven indie music that explores a myriad of concepts and genre elements, while spotlighting the components that have come to define Tijuana Cartel’s sound.

Opening track ‘Sufi’ introduces the listener to five minutes of instrumental virtuosity, with reverberated riffs permeating the track’s spectral atmosphere. This leads into the second track ‘Minimal Stuffing’, which continues with a similar aesthetic, allowing intricate acoustic guitars and sweeping electronics to create a sense of vividness.

Track three ‘Strandzha’ begins with mantra vocals, artistic percussion and illumining guitars, as the song explores elements of world music. Following that is the fourth track ‘Tommy Franklin’, which blends fundamentals of modern pop music with unique layers of syncopated instrumentation that pulse and swell before the song transitions into the conversant fifth track ‘Over and Over’. Oscillating synthesisers blend with sedative vocals to showcase Tijuana Cartel’s chemistry and skill in a euphoric way.

Penultimate track ‘Ishkur’ crescendos into a defying fusion of bass-heavy dance elements, as the instrumental flows into final track ‘Middle Something’, with high energy percussion and frenzied guitars. As terraced layers of instruments rise and fall from the mix, the song profusely hauls towards its finale, capping off a comprehensive record of tentative psychedelic music that excels with wistful capacities.

To support the release, Tijuana Cartel will be embarking on a monumental album tour, appearing in multiple capital cities and regional Australian towns. This continues on from previous persistent touring schedules, performing internationally, numerous sold-out headline tours and appearances at prominent festivals including Falls Festival, Splendour in the Grass, Subsonic Music Festival and Nannup Music Festival.

Singles off ‘Acid Pony’ have been widely embraced by the likes of Australian radio stations triple j, triple j Unearthed, Double J, 3RRR, 2SER, Radio Adelaide, 4ZZZ, and RTR FM. They’ve also received support from tastemaker blogs Clash Magazine (UK), Indie Shuffle (ZAF), This Song Is Sick (USA), Pilerats, Acid Stag, The Music, Forte Mag, AAA Backstage and Something You Said.

PERRY P IS ON HIS QUIET GRIND WITH HIS NEW SINGLE ‘ON THE LOW’
Music News

PERRY P IS ON HIS QUIET GRIND WITH NEW SINGLE ‘ON THE LOW’

by the partae June 4, 2021
written by the partae

Perry P, a fairly new name to the hip hop scene in Australia, once again brings some heat to the table with his newest record ‘On The Low’. It comes two short months after his well received second single ‘6IXTY P.’, which debuted on Spotify’s prominent Drip and Mellow Styles playlists.

‘On The Low’, like the Perth artist’s previous music, fuses melodic and energetic vibes, creating an upbeat record fit for fans of the hip hop genre. Perry P cleverly takes advantage of autotune in his vocal performance to maintain the mood over the whole record, while the bass heavy instrumental by MiddieBeats complements the energy throughout the song.

Perry P uses his music as an outlet to put his manifestations out to the world, and talk about his journey through life. ‘On The Low’ is yet another chapter where the artist portrays his quiet grind with the team that he started his journey with.

“To me it’s a realisation that the life I wanna live is only a step away, that all the work being put in will soon pay off in the biggest ways. The title ‘On The Low’ represents the quiet grind I’ve been on to make things happen, me having my head down trying to piece things together, and that I won’t allow any outside thoughts and opinions to enter my inner matrix on my way up.”

Perry P may be a new name in Australian hip hop, but he is definitely one to watch! ‘On The Low’ is now available on all streaming platforms.

LISTEN/PLAY

ABOUT PERRY P

Hailing from Perth, Australia, not many have a style and cadence as unique as his when compared to his peers within the city. Influenced by this generation’s melodic rap wave, Perry has found ways to bend and push his auto tune driven sound to new bounds, most notably in his first release “Starr Alpha”, a haunting divergent track filled with surprises aimed to give you an outer world experience.

Only new to the scene Perry has already taken his artistry to new heights, recently dropping a highly anticipated track in “6IXTY P”, an energetic piece with production lead by fellow label head and producer 6iixty, and setting the bar for how to come onto a feature on “Pull Up” by artist Kayps, another Perth local.

With limited discography, not much needs to be added as the current music speaks entirely for itself, we only join the journey of this rising talent as he steps forward to lead the charge for all music goers like himself, watch close as one of the fastest rising rappers from the west coast of Australia leaves his imprint on the game.

“The best way I can describe it is, imagine yourself in a space shuttle swerving through meteors at light speed, but everything you hear sounds like an echo and far away, even if it’s right next to your ear. At the same time your booster is powered by a 24 inch chrome spinner with a sub attached to it powered by koolaid, that’s me, that’s Perry P.”

Praise for Telenova

“Enchanting, alluring and instantly stylish stuff” – Declan Byrne, triple j

“really nice polished pop with an electronic edge and a nice quirky sensibility. Where it all comes together here for me is the singer Angeline Armstrong…there’s a sweeping cinematic feel” – DJ Raul Campos, KCRW

“A skilfully constructed cut of emotive pop… Brilliant as the lush instrumentation and clever production is, frontwoman Angeline Armstrong absolutely steals the show with a pitch-perfect vocal that just lands perfectly.” – Double J

“‘Bones’ has the grand, string-laden scale of Portishead-era trip-hop with a faster, dance music beat and unsettling lyrics – ‘I was dreaming of blue skies in California/While you were loading your gun’.” – NME

“‘Cinematic indie pop at its finest. It sounds at once nostalgic while thoroughly modern, and is sure to get stuck in your head from the very first listen.” – Purple Sneakers

“If this impassioned performance is any indication, Telenova have an uncanny ability to please any crowd and electrify any venue.” – Milk Bar Mag

Melbourne three-piece Telenova today announce their debut EP Tranquilize will be released Friday 2nd July via Pointer Recordings / Remote Control Records. Off the back of their sold-out ‘Bones’ single tour, and to celebrate the EP release Telenova will return to Sydney and Melbourne, as well as playing debut shows in Brisbane and Adelaide. Full tour dates below, tickets on sale this Friday.

The EP announcement follows on from the bands two singles ‘Tranquilize’ and ‘Bones’. Both singles have seen incredible support from Spotify (including New Music Friday AUNZ, Indie Arrivals, Broad Chords [cover], Fresh Finds AUNZ, Radar AUNZ, Just Chill, Local List, Office Stereo), Apple Music (Heaps Indie, Alt Pop, New In Indie, New Music Daily, Indie Anthems, indie & chill),  Amazon (Australia Now, Breakthrough Australia), and Soundcloud (Fresh Pressed Australia, Emerging Indie, Soundcloud Radio). ‘Bones’ has remained in the Top 50 most played tracks on triple j since release, and both singles have seen consistent support from community radio across the country with recurring appearances in the Top 10 AMRAP Metro Chart. Indie tastemaker Mood On The Roof has also showcased live performances of ‘Bones’ and ‘Tranquilize’ – watch via the images below to get a taste of what the band are capable of bringing to the live sphere.

Assembled by Chris Walla (Death Cab For Cutie) at an APRA SongHubs writing camp in early 2020, Telenova combines the alluring vocals of multi-disciplined creative Angeline Armstrong, alongside the refined musicality of Edward Quinn (Slum Sociable) and Joshua Moriarty (Miami Horror). With an air of quiet confidence, thanks to their self-directed cinematic aesthetics and trip-hop influenced production, Telenova trade in a sound that’s unequivocally Melbourne yet global in scope.

DARKSIDE Share new single ‘Lawmaker’ Long-awaited second album Spiral Released July 23 via Matador Records

Today, DARKSIDE release a new single ‘Lawmaker‘ – taken from their second full-length album, Spiral, out July 23rd via Matador Records / Remote Control Records. Written and recorded in 2018, the album was mixed by Rashad Becker and mastered by Heba Kadry.

Late last year, the band emerged with the song ‘Liberty Bell‘ and announced the existence of a new album. That news was followed in April with a formal announcement and another piece of music, ‘The Limit‘.

DARKSIDE is an American rock band formed in Providence, Rhode Island in 2011. The group consists of Chilean electronic musician & vocalist Nicolás Jaar and American multi-instrumentalist Dave Harrington. Jaar and Harrington first met while studying in Providence through their common friend and saxophonist Will Epstein. In the summer of 2011, they toured Europe and Australia in support of Jaar’s breakthrough debut album Space Is Only Noise.

Upon returning to Providence, they continued to write together, releasing their self-titled EP in 2012 and their critically acclaimed debut album Psychic on Matador Records in October 2013. The album was met with glowing reviews, including a 9.0 from Pitchfork and the New York Times calling it “the soundtrack to a lost David Lynch sci-fi movie.”

In the years that followed the Psychic tour in 2014, the musicians moved on parallel and occasionally intersecting paths. Jaar would release five albums under his name and two collections of club music as Against All Logic. Harrington worked as a producer and composer, releasing two albums with his Dave Harrington Group. During that time he also played some 300 shows in NYC and Brooklyn, becoming deeply entrenched with a wide-ranging community of improvisers and collaborators, performing and recording with Yuka Honda, Brian Chase, Ilhan Ersahin, Genesis Breyer P-Orridge, Joe Russo, Innov Gnawa, Angel Deradoorian, The Master Musicians of Jajouka, Nels Cline, and more.

In the summer of 2018, Harrington and Jaar rented a small house on Lenni-Lenape territory, which is present-day Flemington, New Jersey. The group spent a week there, making a song a day. While it would take another year and a half to complete their second album, six songs from the band’s new record Spiral were written and recorded during this initial session.

“From the beginning, DARKSIDE has been our jam band. Something we did on days off. When we reconvened, it was because we really couldn’t wait to jam together again,” says Jaar.

Harrington echoes this, “It felt like it was time again,” he said. “We do things in this band that we would never do on our own. DARKSIDE is the third being in the room that just kind of occurs when we make music together.”
