Following on from the release of her single ‘Self-Discover’, Brisbane hip hop artist Jacinta Lal unleashes her debut collection of material in the DIVYA EP.
The record is an intensely personal one for the young artist: not only is the title part of her name, but its meaning (‘divine’) is one that Jacinta has expanded upon through the music to become synonymous with feminine power and courage.
The EP came together across sessions with engineers Harry Fox and James Angus in Jacinta’s hometown of Brisbane. The six tracks on the DIVYA record capture different elements of Jacinta’s artistry and personal energy – great snapshots of the creative wave she was riding at the time of writing.
Previous singles ‘Self-Discover’, ‘Sheila’ and ‘Personal’ exude the confidence she naturally brings to the mic, while songs like ‘Funky Fierce’ and ‘M.V.P’ have seen Jacinta pour stacks of personality and biting style into each bar.
“To me, DIVYA are the ones who dare to show the world their true colours. DIVYA are the ambitious who fiercely go after their dreams. DIVYA are the strong-hearted. This does not mean they are not vulnerable. To me, DIVYA are the soulful who have been mocked and have felt pain. Lots of it. But DIVYA are the stubborn ones who get up over and over again despite being knocked over every single time before.”

Accompanying the release of the EP, Jacinta shares new visuals for DIVYA track ‘Sheila’. As she says about this song, released near the end of 2020, ‘Sheila’ is for ‘the feisty and courageous boss queens out there.
“The ‘Sheila’ music video brings to life the character of a woman confident in her own skin. Expressed in some parts through dancing, the music video portrays the character ‘Sheila’ to be having a good time being proud of who she is.”

Damn Excuses was partly inspired by the band’s critically-acclaimed Observatory livestream experience last year. As a global pandemic shook the foundation of the music industry in 2020, interest in the digital consumption of live music began to wane after a few months. With Observatory, Underoath breathed new life into the realm with a complete overhaul of the process – creating something equal parts intimate and monumental. It carried the weight of a sold out arena show translated through vessels consumable in fan’s living rooms. What made it all the more impactful was the fact that the entire initiative was dreamt up and brought to fruition largely by the band’s internal team. Thus, providing another shining reminder of the innovation that the six members of Underoath are capable of pulling together.
This far into their storied career, Underoath has unsurprisingly faced their fair share of adversity. Through the trials and tribulations, a commitment to their craft and a sense of accountability rooted in mutual respect for each other has ensured that each new chapter for the band continues to mould their legacy in a positive fashion. With their shared history of remarkable accolades and trying hardships continuing to shape who the individual members are as people, Underoath is still just scratching the surface of what they can accomplish as a band. There are few acts in the annals of rock history that can say their best work is still ahead of them almost two decades into their career. Fortunately, Underoath falls into that category. As the world opens back up in 2021, the band is deeply committed to living up to the high expectations that fans (and themselves) have come to expect for anything associated with the project. It will undoubtedly be something special to witness as this next chapter in the Underoath story manifests.

Having seen dates at Kendal Calling, Truck Festival and Y Not Festival fall out of their summer touring plans, The Lathums push on to play Tramlines, Sheffield on Sat 24 July 2021 and a special London show with BBC Introducing, appearing at the Omeara on Wed 11 August 2021. The band, including deep-thinking lyricist-singer, Alex Moore, Rickenbacker-slinging guitarist, Scott Concepcion, drummer, Ryan Durrans and the increasingly mysterious ‘Bass Mon Jon’, just need the first chink of light on the return to live to set their summer on fire.

Sydney-based alternative-rock trio RedHook have just unveiled their hyperactive video clip for ‘Kamikaze’ featuring Will King from Windwaker – filmed, directed and edited by Brandon Lung (Stand Atlantic, Polaris) with assistance from Yeah Rad Creative (The Dead Love, FANGZ).
Shot at various locations around Sydney’s inner west, the clip features all three band members performing the song in a flurry of feverish visuals, including kaleidoscopic effects and hysterical strobe lights. Featuring frantic quick cut shots, a penetrating colour scheme and extreme energy, the music video is a thrilling encapsulation of the song’s chaotic nature.
Lead singer Emmy Mack comments on the clip:
“Because this song is so rapid-paced and aggro, we shelved our trademark kooky narratives and went for a more aesthetic, performance-based clip to capture some of the intensity and haywire energy of our live show and the song itself. The frenetic camera movements and dizzying lighting techniques reflect the themes of impending danger as the song’s protagonist hurtles towards their destruction.
Embarrassingly, I ended up in the ER after we filmed it from going a bit too hard trying to do a bunch of jumps and kicks in these giant emo platform boots and stacked it big time – thought I’d fractured my hand!”
RedHook’s ‘Bad Decisions’ EP has ticked up close to 2 million streams on Spotify, while singles off the EP have been further comprised by the likes of Apple Music and Amazon Music, with ‘Cure 4 Psycho’ being added to rotation on triple j, along with further radio support from Kerrang! Radio (UK), SirusXM (US), triple j Unearthed, The Faction, 4ZZZ and Aussie Music Weekly. The tracks have also received praise from blogs Rock Sound (UK), New Noise Magazine (USA), Rolling Stone (AUS), Pilerats, Music Feeds, HEAVY Mag, Maniacs and Hysteria Magazine, with multiple video clips being added to rotation on ABC’s Rage.
RedHook recently embarked on an EP headline tour throughout April and May, including multiple sold out shows in Brisbane, Sydney, Adelaide and Melbourne. They will be appearing at Halloween Hysteria in Queensland, as well as part of the music line-up of Sydney extreme sports festival District X alongside Hands Like Houses and Hooligan Hefs in October, before joining the likes of Northlane and In Hearts Wake at the inaugural Full Tilt Festival in Sydney in late November.

Today bedroom pop act Solo Career, the project of Dharawal / Illawarra artist Annabel Blackman (also known as singer/lead guitarist in acclaimed rock group, Body Type), shares her first official single ‘Movie’, alongside news of her debut EP The Sentimentalist, due September 17 via Dinosaur City Records.

Written, recorded, produced and mixed by Blackman at her DIY home studio, ‘Movie’ features an icy guitar line, motorik drums and a driving bassline, with Annabel’s brusque vocals floating listlessly in the thick of the mix.
On the story behind the track, Blackman reveals:
“I wrote ‘Movie’ after seeing ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’. It was an idyllic afternoon; I walked into the old movie theatre at Bulimba in QLD with my family looking forward to an enthralling experience. We left the cinema an age later. Grandpa looked wiped, everyone was quiet, and then the bickering started and didn’t stop till we settled down at home and watched a movie starring Beyonce. The whole experience sent me into a doom spiral and made me question the integrity of my family unit.”
Talking about the songwriting process, Blackman adds:
“I started writing this song a couple of years ago. I had an idea for the guitar line when I was walking home from work and tried to make it work for ages. It wasn’t until I wrote the lyrics that I was able to mash it together into something I was happy with.”
Solo Career is the late night bedroom pop project of Annabel Blackman – architect, artist and singer/lead guitarist in acclaimed rock quartet Body Type. With Body Type, Blackman has toured Australia, the USA and the UK, supporting acts including Fontaines D.C, Pond, Alex Cameron and Unknown Mortal Orchestra on their national tours in Australia, and playing festivals SXSW, The Great Escape, Hit The North and Live At Leeds, Fairgrounds, Gizzfest and Sydney Festival off the back of releasing two highly praised EPs.
Amongst all this, Blackman has written, produced, recorded and mixed new material for Solo Career while making a name for herself across Sydney’s burgeoning music scene, opening for acts including Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever, Goon Sax, Good Morning, RVG and Sasami, and landing a dinnertime slot with online music festival Isol-Aid in 2020. Live, Blackman is joined by Cecil Coleman (Body Type) on flute, a development that occurred after living together and recording a flute part late one night.
In 2020, Solo Career released two covers: Celine Dion’s ‘My Heart Will Go On’ and ‘I.M.R (In My Room)’, a synth-soaked take on the Beach Boys classic, which was added to rotation on FBi Radio and Edge Radio, and saw praise from NME Australia, Beat Magazine, Deafen County, Verve Magazine and US music magazine, New Noise, who lauded it as ‘Bandcamp of the Day’.
Previous release, ‘Feelings’, featured on Dinosaur City Records Mixtape #4, was added to a string of Spotify editorial playlists, placed in AMRAP Metro Charts top ten tracks ordered for airplay by metropolitan community broadcasters in Australia for three weeks in a row, and added to high rotation on FBi Radio.
