Label: Dim Mak Records

Following her stunning 2020’s debut on Dim Mak with “Nervous Habits,” featuring Joey Fleming, GG Magree returns to Steve Aoki‘s label with her new single “Loving You Kills Me,” an emotive gem that fuses rock and trap influences. Opening with moody guitar chords, Magree‘s heartfelt vocals immediately shine through as she belts out lyrics that paint a picture of loving someone so much that it hurts. The track’s bass-heavy, electric drop adds a dark and gritty edge to the otherwise romantic context, letting the world know that GG Magree is much more than just another pretty voice. The Australian powerhouse formerly made a name for herself through the raucous “Frontlines” with Zeds Dead & NGHTMRE, “Ghost” with Jauz or “Save My Grave” with Zeds Dead & DNMO. Read more about GG‘s inspiration behind “Loving You Kills Me” below:

“I’m such an intense lover. I think I buried myself somewhere when I wrote ‘Loving You Kills Me.’ You know that feeling ‘I want to be with you till I die’ or ‘I love you so much I want to eat you alive.’ That’s how I love and why I gave birth to ‘Loving You Kills Me.’” – GG Magree

GG Magree‘s indisputable talent as a DJ, producer, and singer/songwriter has made her a triple threat in the electronic music industry. She first made waves in 2016 with her vocal debut “Frontlines,” in collaboration with Zeds Dead & NGHTMRE, which has amassed over 31M streams on Spotify alone. GG is also well known for her replay-worthy remix of Billie Eilish‘s “Wish You Were Gay,” in addition to releases such as “Flatline” alongside Sullivan King, “You Don’t Know Me,” and “Bodies.” In her native Australia and beyond, Magree has become a highly sought after artist known for bringing electric energy to audiences worldwide; by far the best way to experience GG Magree is at a live show. She has graced the stage with the likes of Pharrell, DJ Snake, Wu-Tang Clan, Zeds Dead, Virtual Self, Iggy Azalea, NGHTMRE, and many more.

Hey Felipe, thanks for taking the time to speak with us! How are you?

I’m fine, even with this pandemic I try to remain calm, positive and focus on my productions, it’s a pleasure to talk to you.

Where are you in the world right now?

I’m in Presidente Venceslau, the city where I was born in the countryside of São Paulo, Brazil

How has the last year been for you in lockdown? Have you been able to take any positives from it?

It’s been a time full of ups and downs, in many moments it’s very difficult because I’m not sure when or how the return will be, but whenever is possible I always try to keep positive thinking, and like it or not, I ended up having more time to spend with my family and myself, I have used this creative leisure to inspire me even more in the productions that are going full steam.

You’re one half of the acclaimed duo Dashdot. What was your journey like to become a successful producer and DJ?

It’s been an amazing journey, where I collect memories and beats from the most different places and tracks. I’ve made countless friends, met wonderful people and had the pleasure of producing some of the soundtracks that are part of many people’s lives.

What is your favorite memory as Dashdot?

It’s hard to choose a particular memory, but I’ve always enjoyed the international tours, we’ve had the chance to play around Europe, Asia, Australia, North and South America

What made you want to start your solo project FFLORA?

I was at a time in my life looking for more independence and a slightly more specific sound line, I already had the idea of creating a parallel project, and this whole pandemic ended up accelerating this idea.

What was the inspiration behind the new track on Ame Records?

There were some incredible inspirational vibes that kicked in from time to time during these lockdown moments, and Colors is definitely one of my favorite quarantine productions. I hope that I can sign other tracks on Ame, a brand that I identify a lot with.

How was it making with no chance to play it out or have any crowd interaction?

This is one of the biggest differences on my production process, I’d always tested my songs countless times before releasing the final version. However, I had to adapt and somehow teleport myself into the minds of different people in the crowd pretending to be listening to the track.

What would be your dream first gig back?

To tell you the through, I just want to be able to play again. Of course there are some special places and festivals, Like Ame Club itself, Warung, Green Valley, Lollapalooza, Rock In Rio and etc… But what I really want at this moment is to be able to play, doesn’t matter where.

What’s the thing your most excited about when we can return to live shows?

I’m looking forward to testing my quarantine productions, there’s a lot of music that I really believe in!
I’ve probably made more that 50 tracks these last months.

Have you discovered any records in lockdown that you’re dying to play out?

I don’t think there’s a specific track, but there’s a lot of good stuff that was produced in quarantine, whether from Brazil or abroad.

What else have you got coming up?

I have a lot of news ahead of me, from new releases and lives sets and the development of an own label.

“Arguably one of the country’s most electrifying and fascinating experimental outfits”
Rolling Stone Australia

Today Eora/Sydney based electronic punk group Behind You return with ‘Extremely‘, together with the news of their forthcoming EP Absolute Forgiveness, set for independent release on July 8. LISTEN + WATCH HERE.

Of the release, the band reveal “Extremely is both a celebration and denouncement of the sensational. A car crash of the hyperreal. Say the word 15 times and it sounds like nothing.” Following the recent ‘Burning’, ‘Extremely‘ picks up where the former’s frenetic gut punch left off. The result is just as menacing, impactful and impressive as the last, with Behind You covering new territories of their unique fusion of industrial hip hop and hardcore. Language warning!

Coupling the release with another self directed video, the three set fire to the quaint and sweet on ‘Extremely‘. Films on Dharawal land revving engines and feedback bleed through the initial dreamy setting, followed by scenes of disarray. In a Gothic nightmare, Behind You fantasises of low budget motocross dreams. The band share, “The putrid greens of an energy drink, coyote screech of a braindead Suzuki engine; Behind You finds self-worship and self-sabotage in all things considered ‘extreme’.”

Based on Gadigal Land/Sydney’s Inner West, Behind You began as a duo in 2017 with a slew of singles and EPs, performing to small crowds in dark venues around the city. Things changed in 2020 with the entrance of their live percussionist and ‘More Like Flesh’ turned heads. With ‘Burning‘ the band secured rotation from FBi Radio and triple j Unearthed, with acclaim from Rolling Stone, Pilerats and more.

Now with their latest offering ‘Extremely‘ and forthcoming EP Absolute Forgiveness, Behind You continue to affirm their position as one of the country’s most exciting experimental bands. Featuring a collaboration with Newcastle alt-rap duo Craterface, Absolute Forgiveness is a thunderous collection of tracks that examine indulgence, narcissism and the microcosm of life with the treble, bass and volume on full. The result is a compelling local answer to free-genre connoisseurs black midi, Show Me The Body and more. With the clutch on full throttle, stay tuned as Behind You prepare to go airborne.

 DAYDREAMS/HEARTBREAKS

HUNNY BY RYLEY PASKAL

Faced with tour cancellations and COVID lockdowns, Southern California band HUNNY used their unplanned time off to hone their craft and become better songwriters. They launched into a home-recording educational crash course learning at home recording techniques. With these new found skills they began experimenting with production and challenged themselves to produce one new song a month.

Out of that challenge, they have released “Sports with Strangers,” “Xbox Luvr” over the last few months, and have now added their latest lo-fi indie pop single “Daydreams/Heartbreaks.”

“’Daydreams/Heartbreaks’ is about the moments in which you and your partner are both lost in thought,” says the band of the new track. “Trying to infer what they may be thinking of causes you to become trapped in spiral of insecurities. Irrational thought patterns where the negative aspects of your relationship are playing in the theatre of their mind, and you fear that they may come to realise that this all may be a mistake.”

CHECK OUT “DAYDREAMS/HEARTBREAKS” NOW

Since their formation in 2014, HUNNY have built a massive and loyal following with over 90 million streams to date and over 2 million streams per month. The band has released three EPs (2015’s Pain/Ache/Loving, 2017’s Windows I and 2018’s Windows II) and one full-length record (Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes.). Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. is the perfect mix of heavy-hearted lyrics, bright-and-shiny melodies, lovesick confession, and addictively dancey rhythms. Produced by Grammy Award-winner Carlos de la Garza (Cherry Glazerr, Paramore), the debut record came to life in November 2018 during the Woolsey Fire and Camp Fire that devastated 96,949 acres of land in Southern California.

HUNNY is Jason Yarger (vocals), Jake Goldstein (guitar), Kevin Grimmett (bass, keyboards), and Joey Anderson (drums).

The Goon Sax release new single 'Psychic' alongside video

The Goon Sax release new single ‘Psychic’ alongside video

by the partae June 10, 2021
written by the partae

Today, Brisbane’s The Goon Sax return with ‘Psychic‘, the second single from their third full-length album Mirror II, released by Chapter Music. The song is a slice of supernatural avant-pop – kinetic, hook-laden and touched with genuine dreaminess. Alongside the new single is a video directed by Christine Marie Jones (US Girls).

“Psychic exists in the fragile intersection of fantasy and reality,” says the band’s Louis Forster. “A supernatural world you escape into until you feel reality’s grip on your collar. But as you’re dragged back to linear time and supposed objectivity, the supernatural reinstates its claim to a more powerful truth. Eventually the friction between these worlds causes you to question your faith in both, wondering to what degree truth can be chosen and what forces from both are too strong for you to stand in their way.”

Out July 9th, Mirror II is a new beginning for The Goon Sax: a multi-dimensional eclectic journey of musical craftsmanship that moves from disco to folk to no wave skronk with staggering cohesion. Gone are the first-person insecurities of their school days – they’ve been made expansive, more universal, and more weird.

The album is intense, the sum of everything that has always made The Goon Sax great: robust sprechgesang, raw lyrical candor, ascending guitar pop structures that would make the most storied jangle bands blush, elevated into their newfound narrative verisimilitude and expanded sonic experimentations.

MALI JO$E SHARES FIRST TASTE OF UPCOMING MIXTAPE WITH ‘i aint scared to die soon’

by the partae June 10, 2021
written by the partae
“This dude’s coming for the crown! Steez mode unlocked.”
– Dave Ruby Howe, triple j

“In his brief time on the scene, MALiJO$E has already demonstrated a penchant for moving fast. His music conveys a personal story whilst merging elements of contemporary Australian youth culture.”
 – Milky

Fresh, sincere, and compelling, Perth artist MALI JO$E (hoh-zay) raises the bar with his cathartic new single ‘i ain’t scared to die soon’, premiered earlier this week via triple j’s Home & Hosed. The first taste off his upcoming mixtape, set for release in August, and a video clip for the track dropping next week.

A bouncy, bass-fuelled affair, co-produced by OJC43,  MALI JO$E expresses his vulnerability in ‘i ain’t scared to die soon’; challenging the perception of life, death, and gratitude. Showcasing a flair for melodic alternative hip hop and delivering tight lyricism, the single was written in reflection of his life and career achievements to date.

“Sometimes having reflection on life to see how far you’ve come is all you need to assure yourself that your moving in the right direction…Truly I’m not scared to die at all, to be honest. But I’m not scared to die because I know I’ve lived and living the best life I can, because I know who I am, I am who I am, I achieved so much and I’ll die for something and never stand for nothing”, explains Mali Jo$e.

Fast becoming a name to watch, MALI JO$E launched into the Australian music scene in 2019 where he became a triple j unearthed finalist and gained over 300,000 streams on his hit single ‘Mistakes’. His previous track ‘Ladybird’ put him on the radar, along with ranking in the Top 50 Most Played Unearthed Artists, and capped off with a signing to revered booking agency NICHE.The last year two years saw him performing to sold-out shows across the West Coast and set to play Fresh Produce festival (pulled due to COVID-19).

With a penchant for moving fast, don’t wait to catch up as MALI JO$E is showing no signs of slowing down.

‘i ain’t scared to die soon’ is out NOW.

DJ Seinfeld announces new album "Mirrors"

DJ Seinfeld announces new album “Mirrors”

by the partae June 10, 2021
written by the partae
Swedish producer DJ Seinfeld returns with his brand new album Mirrors. If much of DJ Seinfeld’s previous work was characterised by a sepia-tinged haze, a result of the producer’s deliberately lo-fi production techniques, then brand new album Mirrors sees his music come firmly into focus.

“On this album I wanted to retain a lot of the raw emotionality that brought people to my music in the first place,” says Armand Jakobsson, better known as DJ Seinfeld. “But I also wanted to become a much better producer. It’s been an arduous process but it’s a real statement of where I’m at as a producer and person right now. I’ve been through various sonic explorations in the past few years but have come to understand what people like about my music and how to move forward with it.”

Recorded between Berlin and Malmo, Mirrors is the follow-up to Seinfeld’s critically acclaimed 2017 debut album Time Spent Away From U and his first for Ninja Tune. Named after a quote by Armand’s favourite writer, Argentinean novelist Julio Cortázar, the album finds the producer in a more settled and grounded mood after an unfortunate family incident forced the producer to spend more time at home in his native Sweden over the past few years.

“My dad had a stroke a few years ago which means I need to be home more to help,” he says. “Aside from the obvious tragedy of the situation, it’s also helped ground me in reality. Even when I was at the peak of touring, I’ve always had something I’ve had to come home to and contribute to and it’s meant I’ve grown up a lot and really seen the importance of having a happy relationship and a good group of friends around who will nurture you and appreciate your idiosyncrasies.”

“I saw this quote from Cortázar recently, which says ‘You were always my mirror, to see myself I had to look at you,’ and it just made sense in relation to this album. I don’t know who I am but perhaps it’s easier to see the silhouettes through things like heartbreak, family trauma, but also through the peculiar flickers of light and love that enter your life. If the first album was about getting past a breakup, this one is trying to understand who’s standing on the finish line. This album is my mirror.”

Simultaneously optimistic and melancholic in tone, the album is preceded by the single ‘U Already Know’, an italo-tinged summer anthem in waiting featuring an acapella from guest-vocalist Teira, whom Seinfeld met while DJing at a warehouse party in LA.

“That track is very much in the vein of music I’ve released on Young Ethics recently,” he says. “There’s a touch of Italo and it’s got a real funk feel to it. I was happy with it as an instrumental but I added the vocal and it just fitted perfectly and brought the track to life.”

The deliberately naïve production techniques initially used on Seinfeld’s music belie the fact that he is from a long line of classical musicians and has been playing classical piano from the age of 10. “My dad used to be an opera singer and he met my mum at a musical Conservatoire in Copenhagen,” he tells us. “She’s now a piano teacher and plays flute while my sister is a professional cellist and opera singer too. I can appreciate classical music but I reached a point where I felt Chopin didn’t have all the answers I was looking for!”

With the world slowly waking up, thoughts have turned to creating a live show, with Seinfeld currently working with an esteemed, world-class music and lighting designer. He’s already booked to close the Ray-Ban Stage at Primavera in 2022 (with Bicep, Jamie xx and Disclosure announced to close the other days), with more live date announcements imminent.

“It’s been nice to have time away to reflect and recuperate,” he tells us. “But I’m looking forward to getting back to those moments on the road where life becomes a little Anthony Bourdain-esque.”

Citing late-night sessions learning how to produce on his laptop while at university in Edinburgh and ‘pretending to be Burial’ as key turning points in his journey, Seinfeld has now produced an album with all the emotional depth and musical dexterity of those electronic luminaries. Mirrors touches on everything from UK Garage to down-tempo house to ambient to breaks and is an at times tender, at times euphoric sonic journey with a producer slowly realising his full potential.

Rising to prominence in 2016 as part of the lo-fi house scene alongside producers including Ross From Friends and Mall Grab, DJ Seinfeld (whose name is a result of extended sessions watching the classic American sitcom after a breakup and move to Barcelona) released his debut album in 2017 which received plaudits from Rolling Stone and Pitchfork to name a couple. It also gained attention from contemporaries like Flume, Flying Lotus, Bonobo and Martin Garrix and saw Seinfeld become a globally in-demand DJ playing sets everywhere from Glastonbury to Coachella, Warehouse Project, Sónar By Night and MoMaPS1, sharing stages with everyone from Jeff Mills to Stormzy, Underworld and Bicep as well as accompanying Disclosure on several dates of their US tour. In 2018 he became part of a select group of DJs that includes Moodymann, DJ Koze and Nina Kraviz when he was chosen to curate an edition of the iconic DJ Kicks mix series. To top it off, Aphex Twin began playing his track ‘Sakura’ in his live shows.

2019 saw Seinfeld launch his Young Ethics label with the Galazy EP, which saw support from The Blessed Madonna, Gerd Janson, Jamie Jones and Maceo Plex as well as being preserved for cultural record in the Swedish Royal Library’s Archive For Sound. In the same year he also recorded an Essential Mix for Radio 1. Over the years Seinfeld has remixed Disclosure, Omar Souleyman, George Fitzgerald, Bob Moses, Honey Dijon, SHOUSE, Pendulum, Prospa, MJ Cole, Baltra and more.

LUCY PARLE Wins Teen category award at International Songwriting Competition Signs recording deal with Double Drummer New single 'Back Up' out now!
Music InterviewsMusic News

Lucy Parle

by the partae June 10, 2021
written by the partae

Where are you currently based?

I’m currently based on the Central Coast NSW Australia.

How did you first start playing music?

I first started singing lessons when I was 8 years old and then I started learning the guitar and piano when I was around 10.

What’s been happening recently?

I have recently won the Teen Category in the International Songwriting Competition for 2020 for my latest single ‘Back Up’. It has been the coolest experience winning this category because it has really boosted my confidence as an artist.

You’ve just released your new single ‘Back Up’ via Double Drummer, what influenced the sound and songwriting?

When I wrote this song I was influenced by artists like Taylor Swift and Julia Michaels. But I also took in influences from the song ‘Every Rose Has It’s Thorn’ by Poison because I love that songs production and it’s songwriting style.

How did you go about writing Back Up?

I wrote Back Up pretty quickly because it is about a personal experience I went through so the song was always all about the lyrics so when I was writing it I really focused on what I wanted to say and interesting ways to communicate what I was going through.

Where and when did you record/produce/maser and who with?

I recorded Back Up with the best producer in the world Michael Carpenter and I recorded it at Love Hz Studios.

How did you approach the recording process?

Michael and I always approach recording with a scale. On one end of the scale is organic/ country and on the other end is electronic/ pop. I always wanted this song to be a little rocky but still organic and so I gave him some reference tracks and we went from there.

You’ve recently won the ISC TEEN Competition, how has this experience been and how have things change since?

Winning the ISC really pushed us to release Back Up which has been the coolest experience. It has also given me so much added confidence as a songwriter and artist which I treasure because sometimes being an artist can get overwhelming.

How do you juggle music with school?

I don’t! Haha just kidding. I definitely put music first because it’s what I want to do with my life so I think I balance it by trying to schedule when I’m going to get school work done so I don’t fall behind and I work on music the rest of the time.

Who are you listening to at the moment and who influences your sound?

I am currently listening to Julia Michaels’ most recent album as well as Delta Goodrem’s new album. I also love Emily Weisband, Harry Styles and Taylor Swift.

What do you like to do away from music?

Most people who know me will know that when I’m not working on music I’m with my fur babies. I love my cats and my puppy and spending time with them is one of my favourite things in the world.

Does songwriting come easy?

For me, music tends to come in ebbs and flows. I often write a bunch for songs in the space of 2 months and then after that I won’t be able to write anything I like for the next 2 months. The trick is to not put pressure on yourself because that causes blocks. I’ve learnt that I can’t force myself to write and that when I’m in the right head space I am able to write so many songs that I really like.

Do you have to find a quiet space and make an appointment with yourself to write or does inspiration come any time /anywhere?

I will often get inspiration from something someone has said or in dreams and other experiences and I will just write the idea in my notes on my phone. But to actually write a song I definitely need a quiet space to go. For me, I write at my piano in my bedroom because that’s what inspires me.

What’s planned for the remainder of 2021?

For the rest of 2021 I plan on continuing to release singles in the lead up to my debut album!

Favourite food and place to hangout?

Mexican… love it! Also Grill’d. My favourite place to hangout would have to be either at home or somewhere I feel like I can be myself.

‘REVOLUTIONARY, FILM’ – A WINTERBOURNE’S MOVIE ‘A BRAND NEW NOVEMBER’ – WINTERBOURNE’S FIRST LIVE ALBUM

by the partae June 9, 2021
written by the partae

Sydney duo Winterbourne are erupting into 2021 with their first venture into the world of cinema, ‘Revolutionary, Film’. The movie, which derives its name from the opening track of the band’s debut album, was uniquely screened this March at three renewed vintage cinemas all along the East Coast of Australia – The Ritz in Sydney, The Lido in Melbourne and The Elizabeth Picture Theatre in Brisbane – and officially premiered and released worldwide on YouTube on April 28th.

Written, directed, edited and produced by the band themselves, ‘Revolutionary, Film’ is a 90 minute manifestation of band-mates James Draper and Jordan Brady’s collective state of mind leading up to, during, and resulting from their debut album ‘Echo Of Youth’ release and subsequent sold out show at Sydney’s Metro Theatre in November 2019. Sections of the show are interwoven with a running fictional commentary as the pair make their way from a live performance in Pitt St Mall to The Metro Theatre, grappling with questions of ambition, nostalgia, reflection and of course, revolution, along the way.

‘Revolutionary, Film’ is a welcome and immersive journey into the world of an Australian band on the rise, and it also heralds the arrival of Winterbourne’s first live album, ‘A Brand New November’ which was recorded during the sold out Echo Of Youth national tour and soundtracks the film. The album is out now on all platforms.

BAKERS EDDY ANNOUNCE DEBUT ALBUM LOVE BOREDOM BICYCLES + DROP EXPLOSIVE NEW SINGLE ‘CONCERTINA’

It is with great excitement that Ivy League Records announce Bakers Eddy’s debut album, Love Boredom Bicycles, will be released on Friday 15 October! A fun and shambolic celebration of the chaos of youth, Love Boredom Bicycles marks the start of an exciting new era for the Melbourne-via-Wellington four-piece. The band have celebrated the occasion by releasing an incendiary new single ‘Concertina’ – a steamroller of hooks and frantic energy, that proves there is a lot more depth than meets the eye with these pop punks. Complementing the track is an equally exciting clip directed by up-and-coming Melbourne director Triana Hernandez, that sees the band on a lost-boys-meets-mad-max treasure hunting road trip.

WATCH: ‘Concertina’ by Bakers Eddy
On their debut album, Love Boredom Bicycles, everything sounds effortless for lead singer Ciarann Babbington and his bandmates: twin brothers, guitarist Alex and bassist Ian Spagnolo, and drummer Jamie Gordon. Produced by Oscar Dawson (Holy Holy) the record bursts with youthful energy swagger and a bucket load of hooks paired with the band’s irresistibly charming sense of humour; rarely does an album sound as though the people making it are having this much fun.

They didn’t get to the ‘let’s make a record’ point easily though. Rewind a year to a pre-pandemic world and the guys were gearing up to release a new EP, but as the world ground to a halt, the band’s plans changed when the enforced break had an unexpectedly inspiring effect.

Rather than sit on their hands, waiting to drop an EP they’d gone lukewarm on, they decided to scrap it all and instead throw themselves headlong into writing and releasing an album. The shambolically brilliant result is Love Boredom Bicycles.

Love Boredom Bicycles is an album with good times coursing through its veins. “The whole record is supposed to sound like the life of the party,” explains Ciarann. “’Concertina’ is the kick arse opener where you walk through the doors and everyone’s vibing and having a great time. And then it takes you through the journey of this party and then you’re left at like 5 o’clock in the morning, with like 2 or 3 people around, you’re gonna have a beer and go to bed. And you’re just reflecting, like, ‘That was a sick party, yeah.’”

SHARES TITLE TRACK AND VIDEO

TAKEN FROM FORTHCOMING ALBUM  HIDEAWAY
OUT JULY 16 VIA FAT POSSUM RECORDS

Today, Wavves shares the third offering from their forthcoming album Hideaway. The title track of the album, ‘Hideaway‘ incisively cuts through the pitfalls of empty self-affirmations, and comes with volume two of the Hideaway album video trilogy directed by Jesse Lirola and styled by Ally Hilfiger. The song follows the previously-released singles ‘Help Is On The Way‘, which The FADER said “is the band at their most optimistic. Sounding like “Warning”-era Green Day, Nathan Williams makes peace with the world’s ills and floats on past with barely a care in the world,” and ‘Sinking Feeling‘, which was the #1 on the SubModern Specialty Singles Chart upon its release and the #2 most-added song at NACC.

Hideaway is out July 16 via Fat Possum Records. Across its brief but impactful nine tracks, the album, produced by Dave Sitek of TV on the Radio, is about what happens when you get old enough to take stock of the world around you and realize that no one is going to save you but yourself, and even that might be a tall order.

“It’s real peaks and valleys with me,” Nathan Williams says. “I can be super optimistic and I can feel really good, and then I can hit a skid and it’s like an earthquake hits my life, and everything just falls apart. Some of it is my own doing, of course.” It’s this self-awareness that permeates each of Hideaway’s songs, marking them each as mature reckonings with who he is.

Hideaway is the follow-up to their 2017 album, You’re Welcome, and arrives after Consequence of Sound named them one of the 100 Best Pop Punk Bands of all time. The album also comes after Williams’ project with his brother Joel, Sweet Valley, launched their Patreon where the duo create a remix for every Sopranos episode strictly using sounds from that episode. Subscribers to the Patreon get access to the songs as well as art, behind-the-scenes footage of their process, merchandise, and audio stems.

ABOUT WAVVES
A little over a year ago, Nathan Williams found himself back in San Diego, writing what would eventually become Hideaway, his seventh album as Wavves, in a little shed behind his parents’ house. It was also the place where he made some of his earliest albums before he became known for his uncanny ability to write songs that sneered at the world while evoking pathos, sympathy, and a deep understanding of how sometimes we’re our own worst enemies, and that can be okay. Williams’ return to his childhood home was not just a symbolic attempt at jumpstarting creativity. It came as a result of a series of major life changes.

A decade ago, Williams released King of the Beach on the maverick indie label Fat Possum. The album was a cocky collection of pop-punk gems that catapulted him into the public consciousness, eventually prompting a jump from Fat Possum into the major label system, where he released two albums before becoming disillusioned by the lack of creative agency available to him. In 2017, Williams self-released You’re Welcome on his label, Ghost Ramp. Now, Williams has returned to Fat Possum with a barbed collection of anxious anthems that grapple with the looming sense of doom and despair that comes with getting older in an increasingly chaotic world. “He’ll always skew toward the Bart Simpson [character],” says Matthew Johnson, founder of Fat Possum. “But that does not mean that he doesn’t have some commentary, and once in awhile, it’s totally spot on.”

After realizing the material he’d been working on in the hideaway was starting to take shape, Williams, along with bandmates Stephen Pope and Alex Gates workshopped the songs in a series of now-abandoned studio sessions, before linking up with musician and producer Dave Sitek of TV on the Radio to help fully realize their new songs. Williams and Sitek bonded while geeking out over music for hours every day. Sitek would pull up Johnny Cash deep cuts and honky tonk obscurities – songs that sonically don’t have much in common with the music Williams makes, but plumb the same emotional depths of the soul. It was a clarifying moment for Williams, who wasn’t quite sure what direction he wanted to take the songs he’d been working on. “We’d listen to old music and not get much done, but it was really important in the end,” he says. You can hear the result of these sessions on career-high points like ‘The Blame‘, which takes its cues from the Replacements’ best moments, but doubles down on a sort of yearning sadness. It’s full of hard earned wisdom and melancholy, and it sounds like nothing else Williams has ever done.

Meanwhile, on the album’s title track, Williams incisively cuts through the pitfalls of empty self-affirmations, his voice straining against lyrics like “I’ll do my best to hideaway, from all of the bullshit chasing me, I don’t care if time’s erasing me, it’s been torture existing this long” In the hands of a less direct performer, it’d be easy to hear this as self-pity, but Williams’ embrace of that hopelessness shines through and becomes something else entirely: an embrace of the comfort that is right in front of him, of making his world small because he need to. Of changing – or not changing – what’s around him because it’s what he has the power to do. “I don’t have it in me to say that things are so much better,” Williams says. “It’s just not my story. It’s good if it’s someone else’s story, but I’ve also learned to realize there just isn’t redemption.” Ultimately, though, Hideaway is not an album about wallowing in depression. It’s about finding a way through all the noise and landing on something that approximates uneasy acceptance.

Women in Music Mentor Program – APPLICATIONS NOW OPEN

by the partae June 8, 2021
written by the partae

The Australian Independent Labels Association (AIR) is thrilled to announce that applications open today for its next intake of mentees for its Women in Music Mentor program thanks to support from the Australian Government.
The Women in Music Mentor program is a four-year nation-wide mentoring and training program aimed at empowering women in the Australian music industry. The program is open to all female, female-identifying and non-binary participants working in or aspiring to work in creative (solo artists, band members, songwriters), technical (engineers, producers, etc.) and/or business roles (managers, promoters, record labels, etc.) within the Australian music industry.
Feedback from the program’s inaugural round last year was extremely positive, with 95% rating the professional development offered as excellent, 92% of surveyed respondents saying their career in the music industry had benefited from their participation, and 80% saying the program had created new opportunities for them. (Roy Morgan)

“It has been such a wonderful program and I sincerely hope it never stops running. It’s incredibly valuable and means so much to emerging artists to have the backing of industry.”  – Georgia, 2020 mentee
“Loved it. Thank you to Maria and the team at AIR for creating a terrific program. Was thrilled to be part of it and was impressed at the diversity and volume of offerings. WIM is setting a new benchmark for mentoring programs!” – Chelsea, 2020 mentee
“The best part for me wasn’t specific opportunities but was the growth and reshaping of my attitude and outlook. My mentor was incredible and helped me to think differently about my career and what is possible. That new attitude and way of thinking can be carried forward and used to secure future goals and opportunities.”  – Victoria, 2020 mentee

The Women in Music Mentor program is an Australian Government initiative delivered by AIR from 2020 to 2023. It is designed to assist with career and leadership progression pathways, strategic decision making, corporate governance, and focus on developing skills in contract negotiation, financial literacy, marketing and leadership.
Mentees will be paired with mentors over a 5-month period and the program will also provide professional development training opportunities, for mentors and mentees. This will include workshops with industry professionals and leaders.
With a focus on developing skills in contract negotiation, financial literacy, marketing and leadership – applications for mentorships for the 2021/2022 financial year are open from June 8, 2021.

More information about the program, eligibility and how to apply can be found here: wim.air.org.au
We invite those of any stage in their career to apply. Whether you are just starting out or looking to take your career to the next level, all applications will be considered.
First Nations people, people with disabilities, those who identify as culturally diverse and those who reside in regional Australia are strongly encouraged to apply.

Minister for Communications, Urban Infrastructure, Cities and the Arts, the Hon Paul Fletcher MP, welcomed the launch of the second year of the Women in Music Mentor Program.

“This important program is part of the Morrison Government’s commitment to supporting the ongoing sustainability of our music industry, and is delivering important opportunities for women in the industry to develop and advance their careers.”

“We look forward to announcing the mentees for round 2 of this nationwide program and to delivering professional development to help assist with career progression”

NOEL GALLAGHER’S HIGH FLYING BIRDS UNVEIL NEW TRACK
‘FLYING ON THE GROUND’ – Listen Here‘BACK THE WAY WE CAME: VOL 1 (2011-2021)’
OUT THIS FRIDAY 11 JUNE
Best Of Album Celebrating Ten Years of Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds
Available To Pre Order Now Here‘Flying On The Ground’ Accompanied by Video featuring Matt Smith, Gala Gordon & a Cameo From Noel Gallagher – Watch Here

Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds have today unveiled ‘Flying On The Ground’, the second new song to be taken from forthcoming album ‘Back The Way We Came: Vol 1 (2011-2021)’.  Marrying irresistible melodies with Motown-esque backing vocals, strings and brass, ‘Flying On The Ground’ is yet another classic slice of songwriting to add to Noel Gallagher’s burgeoning songbook. The song is produced by Noel Gallagher and Paul ‘Strangeboy’ Stacey and was recently described by British GQ as being “as good as anything he’s ever written”.

Speaking of the new track, Noel says: “Flying On The Ground is literally the best thing I’ve released since the last thing I released.  If Burt Bacharach wrote for Motown this is what it would sound like … only not as good … obviously.”

The official video for the track is a companion piece to the current single ‘We’re On Our Way Now’ starring actors Matt Smith and Gala Gordon plus a cameo appearance from Noel himself.  Directed by Dan Cadan and Jonathan Mowatt for Rankin, they offer insight into the French New Wave cinema inspiration, “This video reveals the true darkness behind the relationship between our protagonists … and its tragic undoing – a blatant nod to ‘A Bout De Souffle’ and ‘Bande A Part’ (’The Outsiders’).  Matt and Gala were left to their own devices to improvise each scene within both videos.”  Watch the video from 6pm BST here.

Released this Friday (11th June) via Sour Mash Records, ‘Back The Way We Came: Vol 1 (2011-2021)’ is a definitive 18 track Best Of package, and a timely reminder of the breadth and depth of songs from the first decade of Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds. Curated and compiled entirely by Noel, the tracklisting encompasses songs from High Flying Birds’ three albums (‘Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds’, ‘Chasing Yesterday’ and ‘Who Built The Moon?’) and the three acclaimed EPs (‘Black Star Dancing’, ‘This Is The Place’ and ‘Blue Moon Rising’). Having sold over 2.4 million albums internationally, this run of three UK Number One albums marks a record breaking ten consecutive UK Number One studio albums across Noel’s career.

Noel was also recently announced as the official ambassador for this year’s Record Store Day – the annual celebration of the UK’s independent record stores.  As part of the event there will be an exclusive limited edition vinyl format of ‘Back The Way We Came: Vol 1 (2011-2021)’ released on 12th June – a numbered, hand pressed, coloured double LP with exclusive art print.

The current period of activity celebrating a decade of Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds continues throughout this week as Sky Arts broadcast ‘Noel Gallagher: Out of the Now’ on Thursday 10th June at 9pm. This show presents an up-close performance of music and storytelling from London’s Duke of York’s Theatre. Powered by his formidable thirteen piece band, Noel will perform ten tracks spanning his career in Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds and Oasis, and walk us through some of the significant moments in his own life and career which continues to define British pop culture.

LUCY PARLE Wins Teen category award at International Songwriting Competition Signs recording deal with Double Drummer New single ‘Back Up’ out now!

written by the partae

Boutique Australian indie label Double Drummer’s newest signing,17 year old Lucy Parle from the NSW Central Coast, took out first place in the International Songwriters Competition (ISC) winning the TEEN category with her song ‘Back Up‘.

The ISC is the world’s largest songwriting competition, with over 23,000 artists entering in 2020 and included Coldplay, Dua Lipa and Tom Waits on the judging panel.

Lucy was in good company, with other category-winning Australian artists including Birds of Tokyo, Mia Wray, Mia Rodriguez, Golden Features, The Presets and Merci, Mercy.

At just 17 years of age and currently completing her final year of high school on the NSW Central Coast, Parle is a gifted storyteller and rising star. Her distinctive sound sits at the intersection of folk, pop, indie and alt-country.

Lucy is a self-described lover of honest and confessional lyrics. Her raw acoustic textures carry a natural breeziness that will resonate as much to fans of Amy Shark and Vance Joy through to Taylor Swift. Her previous single Crayon Sun garnered glowing reviews from triple j Unearthed.

The label’s Edward Prescott commented: “Lucy has such a rich, natural melodic sensibility as a songwriter; plus she’s got a brilliant work ethic and is highly prolific. She also has a really strong identity, vision and sense of self, particularly for someone so young. We can’t wait for people to hear some of the wonderful songs she has waiting in the wings.”

Reflecting on her recent win and latest single, Lucy added: “Back Up is a special song to me and came pretty quickly. I wrote it about a relationship breakdown and all the emotions I felt when I was trying to get over it. It was one of those songs that just fell onto the paper,

“Winning the Teen Category in the ISC really cemented that songwriting is what I’m meant to do. To have Back Up recognised in an international songwriting competition is beyond exciting. It’s a really raw and emotional song that I think people can relate to and I can’t wait for it to be out into the world!”

Her accomplished songwriting has also recently awarded her another win and finalist placement in the Youth category of the Australian Songwriters Association as well as a nomination for ASA Songwriter of the Year (supported by APRA/AMCOS).

DIG the third track to drop from Chasing Ghost’s forthcoming EP released this Friday [June 4th] and is just as potent as its previous two single drops. The first track to drop from the band’s HOMELANDS EP was SUMMER a punk-rock driven track that takes the listener on a journey through the grieving eyes of an Aboriginal Elder retelling the true story of the Towel Creek Massacre, NSW in which a sole child survived.

Wall of Sound “When it comes to addressing Indigenous affairs in the music scene, no one does it quite like Chasing Ghosts frontman Jimmy Kyle.”

BUSTED LUNG the second track dropped is inspired by a true story of a random act of violence towards a young Gay man [a friend of Kyle’s]  in a hate crime which took place in inner city Melbourne. The survivor in an act of courage forgave his attackers and advocated they not serve prison time.

Scenezine “Every track on the forthcoming EP is about real people and real situations, all of them born from intense real-life stories”.

New single DIG  explores Australia’s history and treatment of Aboriginal peoples from the English invasion through to the modern period in a chronological order asking the listener to dig a little deeper into our history confronting the frontier wars, Aboriginal resistance, the mission area of assimilation, the stolen generations and indentured servitude, the mining industry and native title and finally deaths in custody.

“I was scared to write these songs, because a lot of the topics are challenging,” says Jimmy Kyle, a proud Goori man, of the Thungutti mob from the mid-north coast of NSW.

“But that’s how I knew I was onto something. It made me feel nervous.”

Stream the EP  ››  HOMELANDS  https://soundcloud.com/chasingghosts/sets/homelands-ep/s-wPIYqEDpVT

“I know people are going to come after me with some of these songs,” he says. “But I know in my heart that telling these stories is right and telling them in the way I do is the right thing to do. I know my audience is predominantly non-Indigenous, so I have to engage them in a way that engages their heart. Because that way they’re not going to be judged, but they can put themselves in an empathetic position to go on the journey.

To find the answer he lent on his bandmates: Josh Burgan (guitar/vocals), Aaron Schultz (guitar/vocals), Jake Dargaville (drums), Chris O’Neill (keys/vocals) and Rohan Welsh (bass). Together they breathed weight and volume

into Kyle’s compositions, staying true to the core organic elements that define Chasing Ghosts – no autotune, only real instruments – while willingly following their chief songwriter into new musical territory.

Deadly quotes from media 2021 ›››

Wall of Sound “When it comes to addressing indigenous affairs in the music scene, no one does it quite like Chasing Ghosts frontman Jimmy Kyle.”

Rolling Stone -“’Summer’ on track to be one of the most powerful entries in their discography to date.”

The Guardian “Australia’s best new music for February…weaving English with his native tongue, and delivering a powerful punk song with sugary hooks and a thrilling momentum that belie the horrors of such a massacre“.

The Partae “’Summer’ is one hell of an amped track with a beat that drives so strong it has the legs to keep rockin’ all Summer long.

Scenezine “Every track on the forthcoming EP is about real people and real situations, all of them born from intense real-life stories”.

Hysteria Mag “Jimmy Kyle honestly admitted that he “was scared to write these songs.”
