Where are you currently based?

I live in Paris, France ! It has been 7 years now. I come from the South Ouest of France from a small town called Périgueux!

How did you first start playing music?

I started playing music when I was 16 years old. I was playing guitar and I sang in a Rock Band. It was pretty fun!

Then, I moved to England and I played in an Hardcore band. Pretty funny to think about it now, regarding what I am playing these days..

What’s been happening recently?

I released a new EP on my label Groovytude Records with an amazing Remix from Black Loops! ! I loved all the process of doing it and having the chance to have one of my favorite producer on board was amazing.

Your latest EP ‘Can You Feel It’ is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting?

With this Ep, I wanted to mix machines, plug-ins and real instruments. That’s why you have two Bass on the track “Can you feel it”.  One is from a plugin and the other one from a bass guitar. I added some notes on the guitar and I sing some parts! On the track “Show me the way”, I have incorporated my voice and a TB-303 to mix machines and humans. I wanted something clubby that can mix a machine vibe and a happy vibe.

How did you approach the production process?

I only produce during the day. I try to do “Sunny” music so I need an environment that will help me to do so.

The more it’s sunny outside, the more it will help me out. Then there are no rules! Sometimes I will start a track with a Synth or sometimes I will start it with a Drum. It depends of the inspiration.
What programs/equipment did you use?

I’m in love with the Arturia plugins. I used them most of the Time. I tried to do tracks without them but I love them so much so I’m still using them.

And of course, I use my microphone a lot as I sing on most of my tracks. I bought it in a small shop years ago. I wouldn’t advise anyone to buy it as the quality is awful but i can’t seem to part with it.
What did you find most challenging and rewarding through the production process?

The hardest part for me is to finish the track. When I have done 98% of a track I’m always stuck. I put my guts in every track so I am very tired at the end of the process. I really pay attention to details, so sometimes I would stay on a filter or an effect for 4/5 days.

What do you like to play?

I love to play my tracks and see how people will react. The best feeling is to play unreleased tracks and see that people love it. Regarding the style, I would say Minimal/ House. I’ve been in love with this style for years now. I think its an amazing combination to make people dance and make them happy.

What’s been happening with Groovytude lately?

Our favorite thing is to organise costume parties! The last one we did was for Halloween where we invited Phil Weeks ! We had 1000 people waiting before the opening to get in. It was crazy. We were full in 45 minutes and the crowd was on fire !

We are already working on the next Halloween party with something bigger…
Who are you listening to at the moment?

I try to listen to other stuff than House music when I am home. I really want to know what’s going on in other genres and I come from Rock music. So I would say the last single from Foals called “Wake me Up”.

What do you like to do away from music?

I love to do sports. It helps me a lot to survive in the music industry. It could be running, going to the gym or anything else, as long as I am dead after an hour and feel relieved.   And if I’m too lazy or tired, I would say watching a movie or series. I can binge watch the whole day and not moving from my sofa for hours…

What’s planned for 2022?

The next EP’s on Groovytude Records are already booked for the year and we are already working on the halloween party ! I can’t talk about anything else as it is very secret. I wish I could !  What I can say is that I’m working very hard and it’s going to be a great year!

PINEGROVE Pinegrove share new single ‘Respirate’ From forthcoming album 11:11 Out January 28 via Rough Trade

by the partae January 11, 2022
written by the partae

New Jersey-based group Pinegrove have shared their new single titled ‘Respirate‘. A crushing ballad, the track is the latest song to release from their forthcoming new album 11:11 (out January 28th on Rough Trade Records / Remote Control Records) and urges us to look out for and love each other. Listen to ‘Respirate‘ HERE.

“With ‘Respirate,’ I was thinking about the opportunity we had in the chaos Covid brought to redesign society so that it works well for more people, but that instead what’s unfolding is a doubling down on the same bent and venal structures that have resulted in so much inequity in the first place,” stated singer/guitarist Evan Stephens Hall. “So, how can we compassionately respond to such cold and blatant greed? How can we make sure to look out for one another in the absence of meaningful leadership and materially significant policy? We’ve been stranded but we will look out for each other—what choice do we have? The song is a reminder that we’re in this together.”

‘Respirate‘ follows the release of lead single ‘Alaska,‘ a brash two-minute banger. The FADER called it “a rollicking, diaristic barn-burner in the vein of Bright Eyes and early Arcade Fire, with catharsis wrapped around every chord,” while The New York Times raved: “The lyrics showcase the vivid poeticism of Hall’s writing while the song’s driving rhythm and fuzzy guitars create an atmosphere that’s at once emotionally restless and as warm as a hearth.” The band also teased an early track from 11:11 this summer called ‘Orange,‘ a song that decries government inaction in the face of imminent climate collapse. Consequence called it “poignant” while Paste called it “a slow, thoughtful song.”

Hall is big on multiple meanings. The leader of Pinegrove titled their sixth album 11:11 because of its layered significance: the numerals gesturing to a row of trees, or striped corduroy; the cornfields of upstate New York, or people shoulder-to-shoulder. But it’s also a special time, a “wink from the universe,” as Hall says, for those who witness it on the clock to wish for something brighter. “Calling the record 11:11 should be a heartening statement, though there’s certainly a range of emotion across the album. There’s much to be angry about right now, and a lot of grief to metabolise. But hopefully, the loudest notes are of unity, collectivity, and community. I want to open a space for people to feel all these things.”

The album sees the band build on their poetic blend of indie rock, folk, and alt-country, along with Hall’s earnest, open-hearted vocals and his penchant for writing emotionally direct, literate, introspective lyrics. Here, political and socially conscious themes permeate, and as he evolves as an artist, his resolve has only grown stronger – and more purposeful. 11:11 weaves these critiques through an accessible and sensitive work, which manages to be pointed without ever being didactic.

Noted producer and former Death Cab for Cutie member Chris Walla took on mixing duties, while Hall and Pinegrove multi-instrumentalist Sam Skinner co-produced. Hall credits Walla’s impeccably placed arrangement ideas as a vital voice at the table, moving on from the “crisp and contained” production on 2020’s Marigold, to more of a “messier” feel for these new songs. Pointing towards hope, love, grief, and anger, 11:11 seizes listeners with feelings of warmth, urgency, and soulful beauty – even as it asks some of life’s most difficult questions – through hook-filled songs that bury themselves in the senses and stay there.

11:11 will be available in all digital formats, physical CD, standard single black vinyl, deluxe single opaque red vinyl, and deluxe webstore-only single green vinyl through the Pinegrove and Rough Trade / Remote Control webstores.

WIDOWSPEAK Share new single & video ‘Everything Is Simple’ Announce new album The Jacket Out March 11 via Captured Tracks

by the partae January 11, 2022
written by the partae
Widowspeak have announced their sixth studio album, The Jacket, to be released March 11 via Captured Tracks / Remote Control. Along with the announcement, the duo (singer-songwriter Molly Hamilton and guitarist Robert Earl Thomas) have shared a propulsive, spirited song about shifting perspectives in increasingly complicated situations. In the music video directed by OTIUM, Hamilton croons “learned to love the ropes when you were caught, see they could be braided a better way and sinking into nothing – you learn to stay” fittingly in front of bulls being wrangled at a rodeo.

Quote from Widowspeak on ‘Everything is Simple’ – At the beginning of something (a relationship, a project, a job, a new place) you have this very pure feeling toward it. Everything feels less complicated because you’re oriented wholly toward that potential. It’s undefined, and that makes it easier to understand, because you can’t see the problems yet.  As time goes on, you learn more, you experience more, and you see where the limitations exist: not even necessarily ones imposed upon you, but where you draw your own lines. Maybe you can’t see what was holding you back until it’s in the past, and by then others’ perspectives contradict your own.  Everyone is constructing their own versions of reality.  The song was originally going to feed into the drama of the imaginary band, but it’s about our own band too.  I was thinking about how I’m an inherently unreliable narrator about my own life, and at the same time maybe there are no “true” stories.

Director quote: “The concept is centered around the idea of trying, knowing that even if things turn out differently than you intend, the very act itself is what you are striving to achieve.”

Forthcoming album, The Jacket started out with loose strings of a concept, a story about a fictional band:

A chain-stitcher working in the satin district of an unnamed city, a neighborhood of storefront tailors devoted to elaborate costumery for country-western, art rock, ye-ye cover bands that populate the street’s bars after dark. The narrator joins one such outfit, ‘Le Tex’ and feels a sense of belonging and momentum, movement beyond what was previously a stable, predictable life. A relationship with a bandmate materializes. Eventually, the group start to write originals. They generate goodwill and momentum, and venture out on the open road seeking new opportunities beyond what the satin district can offer. But the vibrational energy that got things moving is the same that shakes the whole thing apart: the relationship, and the band, disintegrate upon finally reaching their destination, the end of the road. The chain-stitcher heads back to the city, settling back into the rhythm of work, old standards and a familiar place.

The story is self-referential on purpose: it speaks to the absurdity of ego, codependency and shared visions even as it celebrates them. The Jacket finds Widowspeak navigating these contradictions, and although its ten tracks now trace a more abstract arc than the campier initial concept, strands of that earlier narrative remain: “stitches in satin”, American cities after dark, glimpses of the open road, dark bars, and backstages where things get left behind. The resulting album is a wizened meditation on performance and past lives from a band who’ve seen their fair share, hitting their stride now over a decade in.

Written in the months before and after the release of their critically acclaimed 2020 album Plum, The Jacket feels like a full-circle moment for the duo. Thematically, it considers Plum’s broader questions about the values ascribed to one’s time and labor through the more refined lens of performance and music-making. This is due in part to the band’s recent return to New York City, the site of their own origin story, where they recorded The Jacket at the Diamond Mine with co-producer and noted Daptone Records affiliate Homer Steinweiss. In addition to Hamilton and Thomas on guitars, the album features founding drummer Michael Stasiak, as well as J.D. Sumner on bass, and piano and keyboard contributions from Michael Hess.

Sonically, The Jacket finds the band at their usual and best: the album breathes deeply, balancing moments of open lushness with a straightforward, Velvets-y approach. Dynamics shift seamlessly between gentle, drifting ballads and twangy jams, built up from layered guitars, dusty percussion and ambling bass lines. Elsewhere: whimsical flutes, choral textures, and basement organs. Thomas’s guitar playing is as lyrical and emotive as it’s ever been, and Hamilton’s voice: comfortable and effortless. This seamless dynamic is amplified perfectly in the mix by Chris Coady (Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Beach House). The band still wears the same perennial influences on its sleeve: cornerstones like Yo La Tengo, Neil Young, Cowboy Junkies, Cat Power, and Richard and Linda Thompson. They expertly pepper in slow-core, dream-pop, pacific northwest indie, and outlaw country, resulting in a 60s-meets-90s aesthetic. But the duo also wield their own aesthetic feedback loop as a tool of its own, a way to better tell multi-layered stories in their own RIYL language. This sense of sonic nostalgia adds another layer to lyrics that reflect on old selves, invented and true.

The Jacket is a present and comfortable record, imbued with a sense of collective pause and the ease of a band at the top of their game. For all its familiar textures, it still feels entirely fresh within that canon: proudly a guitar record, a rock record, a songwriter’s record. A Widowspeak record.

MEET GODDESS911, THE NEW PROJECT FROM ALISTER WRIGHT (CLOUD CONTROL, VLOSSOM) & SAMUEL LOCKWOOD (THE JEZABELS) – DEBUT EP OUT NOW

by the partae January 11, 2022

DEBUT EP I.F.I.U & I.F.I.U (REMIX) EP OUT NOW

Pairing emotionally soothing chord progressions with stories of trust, anarchy and joy, Alister Wright (Cloud Control, Vlossom) and Samuel Lockwood (The Jezabels), known as Goddess911, share their debut EP and focus track ‘I Fucked It Up‘.

Released via Future Classic, the I.F.I.U EP is accompanied by a four-track remixes EP, with contributions from DJ Counselling, Skeleten, Coby Sey and Yu Su.

Having toured the world, released multiple albums and received a collection of ARIA, AIR, and J Award nods across their illustrious careers, Lockwood and Wright bring an abundance of musical knowledge and a generous offering of spirit. As Goddess911, they explore what people can become when they dissolve the myths that keep them locked in place, encouraging broad searching and acceptance of complexity. Their bright and sweeping offerings explore the vast potential humanity has for creating and recreating the world until it’s a livable place for all of us.

Lockwood shares, “What came out when we started writing was a surprisingly strange pastiche of slightly psychedelic pop and acoustic soundscapes. We were both concerned with the state of the world – our musical collaboration felt like a way of seeking an answer to a seemingly impossible set of problems facing humanity at the time. Heather Shannon (The Jezabels) was included to help with melodies and lyrics, and the three of us chipped away slowly and surely at a set of songs that you find on the EP today. We feel the best way to describe the process is the surrealist exquisite corpse – an assemblage of ideas that have been brought together collectively.”

Produced by the duo themselves, the EP features the singles ‘Saturn’s Wings’, ‘Botanical‘, ‘Carrying‘ and ‘Goddess’, which received an abundance of praise across DSPs and led them to support Kelly Lee Owens across the UK. The EP’s focus track, ‘I Fucked it Up’, captures a new intensity from the duo. Wright explains, “When we were writing together we talked about the joy of destruction, realising that we as people have the power. It can be a playful and joyous expression. Also more literally it is about how we have actually fucked everything up, thinking about that and sitting with it.”

Spiritualized share video for new single ‘Crazy’

SPIRITUALIZED
SHARE VIDEO FOR NEW SINGLE
‘CRAZY‘

UPCOMING NEW ALBUM
EVERYTHING WAS BEAUTIFUL
OUT FEBRUARY 25 ON BELLA UNION

With their new LP Everything Was Beautiful due out February 25 via Bella Union, and having previously shared album opener ‘Always Together With You‘, Spiritualized share a video for new single ‘Crazy‘, a sweet country-soul lament which features backing vocals from Nikki Lane. Directed by J Spaceman and partly inspired by Andy Warhol‘s Kiss, the stunning video can be viewed below.

While some people imploded in the lockdowns and isolation of the epidemic, others were thriving. “I felt like I’d been in training for this my whole life,” says J Spaceman. He was referring to his fondness for isolation and when you reframe loneliness as “beautiful solitude” then it isn’t so bad. He would walk through an empty “Roman London” where “even the sirens had stopped singing” and where the world was “full of birdsong and strangeness and no contrails.” He used the birdsong walks to listen and try and make sense of all the music playing in his head. The mixes of his new record, a ninth studio album, weren’t working out yet.

Spaceman plays 16 different instruments on Everything Was Beautiful which was put down at 11 different studios, as well as at his home. He also employed more than 30 musicians and singers including his daughter Poppy, long-time collaborator and friend John Coxon, string and brass sections, choirs , and finger bells and chimes from the Whitechapel Bell Foundry. So there’s a lot going on.

“There was so much information on it that the slightest move would unbalance it, but going around in circles is important to me. Not like you’re spiraling out of control but you’re going around and around and on each revolution, you hold onto the good each time. Sure, you get mistakes as well, but you hold on to some of those too and that’s how you kind of… achieve. Well, you get there.”

Eventually the mixes got there and Everything Was Beautiful was achieved. The result is some of the most “live” sounding recordings that Spiritualized have released since the Live At The Albert Hall record of 1998, around the time of Ladies & Gentlemen, We Are Floating  In  Space.

The previously released opening track ‘Always Together With You’ is a reworking/supercharging of a track originally released in demo quality in 2014. This new version is a perfect Spiritualized song; a breathtaking, hard-edged, psychedelic pop tune where themes of high romance and space travel collide.

The artwork is designed once again with Mark Farrow. On the limited deluxe vinyl you will find a pill box that you can pop out of the sleeve, revealing gold foil underneath. “Farrow and I were talking about what we should do and we just said, ‘It’s called Everything Is Beautiful, how could you not have a pill?’”

All these layers, all these details, the year-long mixes, the making sense of it all and the lives lived within these lyrics; for somebody so famously unconfident of his own abilities, isn’t this a punishing thing to keep doing? “Yeah, but I like what I do. There’s a line from Jonathan Meades that’s about having all the attributes to being an artist. ‘Paranoia, vanity, selfishness, egotism, sycophancy, resentment, moral nullity and more idiot than idiot savant.’ And that’s what it feels like, this kind of thing. You’re your own worst enemy and biggest supporter. There’s an ‘Of course this is worth it. It’s me’ and then this kind of deep doubt of ‘What the fuck is this all about?’ “And then ‘Why is it important?’ and then knowing there’s no easy answer. But it’s there. I know it’s there.”

A Comprehensive Musical Guide: How to Start Playing Your Favorite Instrument?

by the partae January 11, 2022
written by the partae

Author: Allen Brown

Music is an art that is easily accessible to everyone. There are many different instruments, and it can be difficult when you do not know where to start. This guide will walk you through the process step by step so that you can enjoy playing music in no time at all!

1.Pick the equipment you want

The first step is to pick the equipment you want. This doesn’t have to be expensive, but it should work for your style of playing and comfort level. As mentioned at https://www.allstringed.com, if you prefer a guitar, you can purchase an acoustic, electric, or classical guitar. Learning guitar is not difficult, so you can pick any style.

If you prefer a piano or keyboard, go with an electronic model that is easy to use and has multiple features. You can also find portable keyboards that are lightweight and easy to carry with you.

If you want to try a different instrument, such as the violin or banjo, do some research on the best models for your playing level and budget. It’s essential to get quality equipment, so you don’t develop bad habits from the start.

Once you have chosen your equipment, take some time to read the included instructions carefully. Familiarize yourself with all of the features to use them effectively when practicing.

2. Learn the basics

Once you choose an easy instrument to start with, it’s time to learn the basics. You can go through tutorials online or join a music school near you for better guidance. If you’re getting started on an instrument, it would be best to take classes from professional teachers who have ample experience teaching beginners how to play musical instruments.

You may also want to read about the instrument you have chosen to play. This will help you understand how it works and what techniques are used in playing it.

There are plenty of instructional materials out there that can help beginners learn the ropes quickly. YouTube is one great source for free video tutorials, while books and DVDs usually come with instructional audio CDs. If you’re willing to spend some money, online lessons could be a good option for you – many teachers offer Skype sessions or interactive live streams that make learning easy and fun.

3.Practice!

Once you’ve learned the basics of playing your instrument, it’s time to practice some more! The only way you’ll get better is by actually getting out there and practicing. Even if you don’t feel like doing so or have a busy schedule, remember that this step will be the most important one in becoming a master at what you do.

For your practice, you can start with simple things. Make sure you do your warm-up exercises, as these are the best ways to ensure that you don’t injure yourself while playing. Another thing is making sure that you practice regularly and without fail—for example, if possible every day or at least three times a week.

If this sounds like too much for now, start practicing once a week until it becomes more natural for you to play daily!

You can bring friends to your practice sessions to make it more fun, too. The better you get at playing your instrument, the easier it will be for you to find people interested in learning how to do so!

4.Perform

It will help if you find a way to perform your music. You can do this by:

  • joining an ensemble and performing regularly as much as possible
  • playing for smaller groups of friends and family
  • performing at open mic nights in coffee shops or other similar venues

If you can get yourself out there, it will also help with a recording that people can listen to. This could be creating a YouTube channel or doing it somewhere else online where others can access it easily.

Performing is a great way to improve your skills and get feedback from others.

5.Know how to take care of your equipment

Music equipment is an investment, and like any other investment, you want to take care of it to last. Ensure to read the manufacturer’s instructions on cleaning and storing your instrument.

Therefore, after your practice session, make sure to clean your instrument. Don’t use water on the drum heads; instead, use a damp cloth or a particular cleaning solution if needed. If you want to be careful with your cymbals, wipe them down with rubbing alcohol after each practice session and before putting them away in their case.

Learning to play musical equipment can be very rewarding. It can allow you to communicate your feelings and emotions through melodies and rhythms. Not only that but learning an instrument can also provide a great form of exercise for the mind and body. By following the guide above, you can learn to start playing your favorite instrument.

Let’s Eat Grandma share video for new single ‘Happy New Year’

PRAISE FOR I’M ALL EARS (2018)

“remarkable”
The Guardian (5*)

“I’m All Ears doesn’t just defy demographic stereotypes—it sounds like nothing else in pop right now.”

Pitchfork (Best New Music)

“This is a thrilling, fascinating album that continually startles: it’s a bold step forward and one that feels like a glimpse into the future.”
NME (4*)

“[M]asterful manipulations of mood and texture […] a second effort that exceeds expectations”
TheMusic.com.au (4*)
Let’s Eat Grandma, the duo composed of songwriters, multi-instrumentalists and vocalists Rosa Walton and Jenny Hollingworth, today share ‘Happy New Year‘, an upbeat, blissful song celebrating friendship, and the opening track from their upcoming much anticipated third full-length album, Two Ribbons. Co-produced by David Wrench and Let’s Eat Grandma, Two Ribbons will be released on April 8 via Transgressive.

Rosa Walton said the following about the track: “‘Happy New Year’ is a celebratory song written about my relationship with my best friend. I wrote it after a breakdown between us that lasted for a long period of time, to communicate to her how important she is to me and how our bond and care for each other goes much deeper than this difficult time. I used the setting of New Year as both an opportunity for reflection, looking back nostalgically through childhood memories that we shared, and to represent the beginning of a fresh chapter for us. I’d been struggling to come to terms with the fact that our relationship had changed, but as the song and time progresses I come to accept that it couldn’t stay the way it was when we were kids forever, and start to view it as a positive thing – because now we have been able to grow into our own individual selves.”

With a video featuring the band embroiled in a tennis match-turned-party, ‘Happy New Year’ is the third song to be heard from Two Ribbons following the album’s stunning, melancholic title track ‘Two Ribbons‘ and the ethereal, glistening pop song, ‘Hall Of Mirrors‘, about a beautiful, intense moment remembered, with the latter attracting airplay on triple j and both tracks across community radio nationwide.

Let’s Eat Grandma released their second album, I’m All Ears, in 2018. It came out to a blaze of critical glory, thrilled fans who’d been with them since I, Gemini, and won them interested new listeners as they widened their musical scope. They won Album of the Year at the Q Awards along with many end of year list placements, toured relentlessly, played a life-changing set at Coachella, and then… they disappeared.

Two Ribbons tells the story of the last three years from both Jenny and Rosa’s points of view. As a body of work, it is astonishing: a dazzling, heart-breaking, life-affirming and mortality-facing record that reveals their growing artistry and ability to parse intense feeling into lyrics so memorable you’d scribble them on your backpack. The band has been through a lot in the last three years, and Two Ribbons is the artefact that signals some kind of progression out of distressing times; a story of loss, change, and of survival; a proof of life.

Such was the intensity of Jenny and Rosa’s bond that when they promoted their first album, they positioned themselves as twins. Friends since early childhood, they had graduated into a teenage friendship that was unbreakable and practically telepathic. Those intense and all-consuming friendships are subject to the same ebbs and flows as any other, and as they grew older the two began to find themselves as individuals, tastes differing here, reactions jarring there. There was a time when both felt a little trapped, and needed to fight to create the space to express themselves as individuals within their relationship.

And so the partnership began to fray. Two Ribbons can be heard as a series of letters between the two of them, taking the place of conversations as they try to make sense of the rift in their relationships. It’s a cathartic blood-letting and a devastating realisation about the fickleness of life. Though it is still very much a Let’s Eat Grandma album, for the first time there are Rosa’s songs and Jenny’s songs.

Both Rosa and Jenny found themselves more involved in the production of this album, experimenting with new sounds and diverse instrumentations within the studio, collaborating with David Wrench, also the primary producer of I’m All Ears. On this record Rosa in particular threw herself into the behind the scenes work and driving her own sonic agenda, whilst Jenny sought to synthesise new influences to forge new spaces artistically for the group.

The backdrop to Two Ribbons is two women navigating their way through a lot, for the first time without the tiller of each other to guide them. The songs they wrote and eventually brought to each other are little pockets of light in the darkness, signals in the night to show each other how they were feeling and what they had lost.

Two Ribbons is an album that treads a fine line expressing the most intimate feelings of, whilst making space for, the different perspectives of two women; an album that says this is not the beginning or the end but part of a never-ending circle. It’s cyclical in nature; there is sadness, and pain, and joy, and hope – and knows that no matter what detours we take, we are all connected.

GHEIST unveil music video for ‘We Are Not Alone’ promoting awareness around Mental Health

by the partae January 6, 2022
written by the partae
The Music video aims to drive awareness around the subject of Mental Health in a reflection of the past 18+ months

WATCH: https://vimeo.com/568527183/b32709860a

Following on from their essential Zukunft album on their own Radau Music label in November, GHEIST now serves up a hugely poignant new video for ‘We Are Not Alone.’ The video touches on the subject of mental heath, which is close to the German pair’s heart as they recently lost a close friend and tour manager due to suicide.

The album explored a world of emotional, colorful, diverse, and delicately crafted electronic music with hints of melancholic optimism. This single is another standout that finds the duo really evaluate their sound and skills to new levels. It features their signature mix of  breakbeats, beautifully crafted synthesizers and exciting vocals delivered with real melancholy. They touch on the difficulties of being alone while the video shows someone in isolation at home and looking lost.

Say the pair, “Coming out of these exhausting and strange past 18 month there appears to be a topic that has always been around us but seems now bigger than ever. We’ve been isolated, we’ve been alone and highly in danger of suffering from depression. It’s a matter of the heart for us to talk about this sad phenomenon and get loud about it. We just recently lost a close friend who committed suicide and no one saw it coming.”

“We see it as our duty as artists to point out this problem and create a safe place to open up and destigmatize mental illness as such and built awareness especially for people with suicidal tendencies.  We are about to head into winter and we are still in a post pandemic phase as a society. We should sensitize ourselves for those who need to be seen and make sure that no one feels alone or left behind. Please let us all take care of each other and make the time to listen because WE ARE NOT ALONE.”
‘We Are Not Alone’ carries a vital universal message that should be shared as far and wide as possible.

EELS release new single ‘Amateur Hour’

EELS
RELEASE NEW SINGLE ‘AMATEUR HOUR‘

NEW ALBUM EXTREME WITCHCRAFT
OUT JANUARY 28 ON PIAS / E WORKS RECORDS

Ahead of the release of their anticipated fourteenth studio album Extreme Witchcraft, out January 28 via [PIAS] and the band’s own E Works Records, EELS have today shared the album’s opening track, ‘Amateur Hour’.

‘Amateur Hour’ follows on from recently released singles ‘The Magic,’ ‘Steam Engine‘ and ‘Good Night on Earth‘, which The New York Times heralded as “a quintessential Eels song: hoarse, succinct, dry-eyed and well aware of life’s ironies,” and received rotation adds across Double J, 2SER, Edge Radio and rage (Feature Video), while early previews of the album have seen Extreme Witchcraft described as “honest to god rock n’ roll” by DIY Magazine, “wit, tunes and third-degree self awareness” by Uncut, and “E delivers again on his percussive, groove-rich latest” by MOJO.

EELS leader Mark Oliver Everett, aka E, co-produced the record with PJ Harvey producer and guitarist John Parish, marking the first time the two have recorded together since 2001’s Souljacker album.

Says E: “John Parish is one of the most even-tempered, polite people I’ve ever met. A true gentleman. Actually he’s probably THE most polite person I’ve ever met. But when he gets into the studio he becomes a mad scientist. If you make music with John Parish, you get stuff no one else does. He has a really unique toolbox and musical outlook. Perhaps his politeness is a coping mechanism to keep Mr. Hyde under control when he’s out of his laboratory.”

EELS have had one of the most consistently acclaimed careers in music. The ever-changing project of principal singer/songwriter E (Mark Oliver Everett), EELS have released 13 studio albums since their 1996 debut, Beautiful Freak. In 2008, E published his highly acclaimed book Things the Grandchildren Should Know and starred in the award-winning Parallel Worlds, Parallel Lives documentary about the search to understand his quantum physicist father, Hugh Everett III. 2020’s Earth To Dora album, received extensive critical praise, and was described as “their sweetest natured album ever” by The Independent and awarded four stars in MOJO and NME.

Bae Baracus

by the partae January 6, 2022
written by the partae

Where are you currently?

Clef – Gibsons, BC, Canada, planet Earth

Dolly – Vancouver, B.C.

Lin – Sunshine Coast, BC

How did you first start playing music?

Clef – I’ve been playing for so long that I don’t remember! But I’ve always been involved in something, whether it’s high school jazz band, composing an indie film score, a neo-soul vibe project, an extemporal spectacle band, or Bae Baracus!

Dolly – Learning to play the tin whistle in school…

Lin – Playing recorder, violin and piano as a kid

What’s been happening recently?

Clef – Mostly baby-raising, tryna live in the moment.

Dolly – A long break in Dublin, Ireland, where I’m from. Been surrounded by lots of trad music, maybe that will come out in future writing.

Lin – Not much right now, just coming out the other side of the holiday break, with the kids home from school (more local Covid measures) against the same intense backdrop that ended 2021…<grimace>

You’ll be releasing a remix and video of your single ‘Flex’ on Jan 14, what originally influenced the sound and songwriting for Flex?

Dolly – Being disconnected from people during the pandemic (and before, to be honest). Frustration at trying to communicate online and how it takes away the human element. People communicate much differently when they have to look into each other’s eyes, rather than from behind a screen. That sincere message is delivered in a slight tongue in cheek wrapper, as you can see from the video.

Clef – I think it was a tongue-in-cheek approach but I’ve learned that nothing serious comes out of taking yourself too seriously.

Lin – We wrote & recorded our album in a weekend last summer, and wanted some songs with an element of fun & danceability, in anticipation of live shows and people needing to let off steam. A couple of the songs had a nod to old piano-house and the basis for Flex also has a retro vibe. For some reason, it made me think of the 90s Berlin scene (no idea why as I’d never even been there) but Dolly had lived in Germany and we decided to try a ‘persona’ to deliver the message, which we thought worked really well for the track.

Why did you decide to remix Flex?

Dolly –  It’s the clubbiest song we’ve done so far, it cries out for remixing.

Lin – Yeah, this is one of our faster songs at 125bpm and I wanted to do a moody half-time kind of approach as a b-side

How did you approach the remix process?

Dolly – For my part, I added more primal vocal sounds and swirls to add another layer

Clef – Shout out to Lin for remix! I just blipped and blooped on the remix ?

Lin – Like all our tracks, this came together super fast and I threw it down in a couple of hours. Dolly sent some additional vocal parts and Clef sent some of his inimitable OP1 work… Our approach as a band is to not overthink things nor obsess over details, which I think is one reason why we have so much fun creating together.

What influenced the video concept?

Dolly – We agreed that if we were going to sing about flexing, the video needed to be fun and funny, kitsch and campy. Like “Physical” by Olivia Newton John.

Clef – I think that the concept for the video was pretty much there from the jump, what remained to be seen was how we’d pull off a concept as ambitious as that, and I gotta say, I am amazed by the outcome, I think this video is hilarious!

Lin – this has been a tough couple of years for everyone, and we just wanted to lighten things up a bit and keep things fun. Also, knowing that we were going to release in January, where traditionally people think about working out, it felt like this was the right route. The original concept had a whole cast of extras and a massive nightclub scene, but ya know, lack of budget, time and a pandemic scuppered that 🙂

Where and when did you film and who did you work with?

Dolly – We filmed at Gibson’s CrossFit gym on the sunshine coast (big thanks!) in November, with the wonderful Tallulah directing/filming/lighting. A one woman marvel!

Lin – Massive thanks to Gibsons CrossFit for letting us have freedom to play in their amazing gym! And also to Tallulah for shooting and directing us. I edited the video and the team at LyricVids.Com in Toronto did some colour correction and VFX to give it added sparkle.

What did you find most rewarding and challenging whilst creating the video?

Clef – From my end the process was really easy and I was just excited to be there, but it felt like a good time all around and energy at the set was super positive and exciting. The difficulty for me was getting there in the cold, straight from a bartending shift.

Dolly – Rewarding: getting to perform and be silly in a CrossFit gym with a great group of people! Challenging: finding a time we were all available..

Lin – I’m not a video editor, but I’ve cut most of our videos out of necessity, so that presents some challenges but that said I’m really happy with how this turned out. The most rewarding thing was having 3 hours in this amazing gym, going in with not much of a plan, but just having the freedom to play! I’ve kept myself pretty isolated through the pandemic so it was amazing hanging with Dolly, Clef and Tallulah and letting loose a bit 🙂

Who are you listening to at the moment?

Dolly – Róisín Murphy and Fontaines D.C.

Clef – My buddy got me on the latest Yves Tumor LP from 2020 and WHOAMEMY

Lin – I’m loving Shad’s latest album ‘Tao’ and Little Simz ‘S.I.M.B.I.’

What do you like to do away from music?

Clef – Music is like religion for me so it’s hard to say I could do anything “away” from music but there are other things I’d like to do around music, especially in the technology domain. I’m very interested in how tech-driven solutions could give more control to artists in the production and distribution of their work and how to implement my IT knowledge into a musical space.

Dolly – Riding my motorcycle and my bicycle.

Lin – Growing vegetables without the use of chemicals.

What’s planned for 2022?

Dolly – Live performances, hopefully!

Clef – It’s gonna be a crazy year, a lot of things need to work out to make it tenable or else I’m gonna have to get off this planet!
Lin – Really hoping for us to play some live shows and to bring the fun vibe of Bae to some clubs and festivals later this year.

Favourite food and place to hangout?
Dolly – Fish n chips or sushi. Up in the mountains or in a dive bar.

Lin – Pizza or Curry… I love being in the woods of British Columbia. Pizza or curry in the woods would be a magical thing, in fact that’s a pretty achievable goal for 2022.

Where are you currently based?

I am currently based in Etobicoke, ON (just outside of Toronto), but Hamilton, ON is my hometown.

How did you start playing music?

I got started playing music in my hometown at Hamilton’s yearly music awards. Each year they held a Rising Star competition for up and coming artists to enter, and when I was about 15 I decided to give it a go with a song I had written. Having grown up playing piano, I always enjoyed being musical, but had never performed for the public out of fear.

That year I ended up placing third, and I don’t know what it was about that moment, but I decided right then and there that I wanted to pursue music as a career. A music degree and a bunch of milestones later, I’d say it’s going pretty good so far!

What’s been happening recently?

Recently I’ve been doing a lot of writing! The whole “pandemic” thing has really dwindled down the opportunity to perform live, so I’ve been trying to use the time to figure out what I want to say musically and work out a new show and material for 2022!

Your new single ‘Dial Tone’ is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting?

The idea behind “Dial Tone” actually came from an episode of Letter Kenny. It’s slang for “a dull, boring person”: ie) John has all the personality of a dial tone. When I heard it used in that show I always thought that would make a good song title. Fast forward a few years and a couple boring conversations I couldn’t escape from; “Dial Tone” was born!

How did you go about writing ‘Dial Tone’?

When I decided to finally write it, I reached out to my friends Jesse Slack and Daryl Scott to co-write it with me because I knew the way they wrote would be a good fit for the tune. We really wanted to go for something lazy feeling but also sassy and luckily this was one of those songs that just seemed to come together really easily.

Where and when did you record/produce/master the single and who with?

“Dial Tone” was actually recorded this July! I was so excited about the song after we wrote it in March that I wanted to get it out right away. So I reached out to my producer Jeff Dalziel (who also mastered it) and we got cracking! Everything was recorded at his house, other than parts from the players that didn’t live locally who just recorded at their own houses. It’s crazy how much you don’t need a studio anymore to get the job done.

How did you approach the recording process?

This recording process was approached in what I would call a very typical modern country way. I sent Jeff a demo of the song with the idea and vision I had for it and he worked his magic! By the time I came to record my vocal, the track was basically completely put together. Atypical to that, is me getting to play the acoustic line in the song and add some creative input, which I really enjoyed getting to do on this track.

What’s the weirdest gig you’ve ever played and why?

OH MAN, just one? Lol. I’ve played in a few dive bars where I’ve gotten to see some pretty interesting things but I think the weirdest gig I ever played was the first gig I ever did with my band.

Right when I was first starting out, my college roommate, who I admittedly didn’t know very well, had her relatives in our dorm one time and they asked me if I wanted to play a private party they were throwing. I told them I’d love to, but my band didn’t yet have enough material to fill an evening. We knew 6 songs, to be exact. However, they said that that would be enough and hired me for the evening.

A few weeks later, my country band and I showed up to their event and proceeded to play 3, 2-song sets, where in between they had a classical pianist perform. It ended up being a really fun night but it was definitely the weirdest event I’ve ever performed.

How do you prepare for shows?

To be honest, I don’t really have a ritual that I do! Performing has become pretty second nature to me now (trust me, it never used to be) and usually I just show up and do my thing. I am lucky enough to have a band that I’ve been playing with for years, so that really takes away any worry that I might get before stepping on the stage.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

I am ALWAYS listening to Kacey Musgraves. I am pretty sure she will be my favourite artist until the day I die. But aside from her new album, I’ve been really digging what Ingrid Andress is saying, as well as Tennille Townes.

What do you like to do away from music?

I really like being creative, so in my time off I find myself doing things like scrapbooking, photography, web design, interior design, etc. Pretty much anything with the word “design” after it lol. I’m also a huge environmentalist, so I’ll spend a lot of time trying to make my lifestyle a bit more waste free, or educating myself on ways an individual can create a positive impact on sustaining this big ol’ body of water we call earth.

What’s planned for the remainder of 2021 going into 2022?

Most of 2021 will be about getting “Dial Tone” to as many ears as possible, but I will say that I’ve also got a little EP in the works that I’m hoping to get out to the world sometime in 2022.

Favourite food and place to hangout?

Ouuuu. A few different answers. My favourite place to “get” food is Valiant’s in Barrie, ON. My favourite food in general is pizza, and my favourite place to hangout I’d have to say, is my local watering hole TJ Osheas Irish Snug in Etobicoke, ON.

FANCYNORMAL Release Pop-Bop Pavlova piece ‘FIASCO’

by the partae September 30, 2021
written by the partae

A BIT OF A FIASCO: FANCYNORMAL to release Pop-Bop Pavlova piece, FIASCO

Miscommunication, misinterpretation & misunderstanding, well, we’ve all been there, and Melbourne duo FancyNormal have summed it all up in their latest pop-spritzer bop: FIASCO.

It’s a messy and chaotic ode to miscommunication & trying to understand your significant other. Like being a contestant in a rigged gameshow, where ‘every door you choose you lose’, FancyNormal raises a pinot noir to those who are just tired of guessing what the other is thinking in a relationship that lacks verbalisation.

The duo have had a momentous first year previously releasing their debut EP ‘Starters & Appetizers’ and an engaging remix EP release with Skio Music for their single, Ultra Passion. FIASCO is the cherry on top of what has been an incredible year of releases for Fancy.

Speaking about the single, the band says “it’s not an anti-lovesong per se, but more of an anti-rose-coloured-glasses view of what a real relationship looks like.” Guaranteed dance-a-bility, the track will make you feel heard and maybe even say omfg.

Feel like you’re just spinning a wheel, hoping you’ll open the correct suitcase sometimes? This is the song for you – a power-bop ballad filled with plenty to get grooving to. FIASCO will be released on all platforms this September 30.

Following a string of successful releases, Perth’s face of new wave hip-hop Tobias continues a scintillating year with his latest single, Orange and Teal, featuring buzzing Perth rapper Cloud Dstrct.

At just 22, Tobias has already cemented himself as one of Perth’s most exciting talents and a seasoned performer, sharing stages with acts like Spacey Jane, Arno Faraji and Tuka (Thundamentals). His musical journey stretches as far back as a decade, and by the age of 16 he had already represented Australia at the 2015 International Presentation of Performers in LA, USA.

Tobias’ animated and electrifying delivery is on full display in his latest offerring, which features earworming production and an infectious hook. Cloud Dstrct adds his trademark filtered vocal melodies to produce a standout verse, evidence that his commercial radio and Spotify-featured sound is solidified.
