DMA’s Australian headline tour kicks off this month + special guests announced

by the partae March 17, 2022
written by the partae

Final tickets on sale now!

DMA’S kick off their first AU tour in three years in a fortnight & today reveal special guests

Sydney and Brisbane sold out; Fremantle show postponed

210+ million streams and counting; thousands of international arena tickets sold. A Top 10 UK chart debut with THE GLOW. Five x 2021 ARIA nominations. Just announced as a finalist in 2022’s Vanda & Young Global Songwriting Competition. The accolades for all conquering Sydney trio DMA’S keep on coming!

With their Sydney and Brisbane shows sold out and Melbourne and Adelaide not far behind, DMA’S will finally kick off their hotly anticipated Australian tour in just two weeks’ time… their first headline AU tour in three long years!

Announced earlier this week on the line-up to 2022’s Reading and Leeds, these will be DMA’S biggest Aussie shows to date, packed full of crowd favourites like ‘Delete’, ‘Silver’, ‘The End’, ‘Step Up The Morphine’ and more. It’s been a long wait for fans of the ‘Junk Truck Head’ trio, who’ve carved themselves an enviable career as one of Australia’s biggest selling live acts.

WA show update: Unfortunately, due to changes to density limits and restrictions regarding live music venues in WA, DMA’S show at Fremantle Arts Centre on Sunday 3 April is postponed. Fans should hold onto their tickets, as they’ll be valid for a new date (set to be revealed soon). Ticketholders will be sent information direct via ticketing agency Oztix, be sure to follow the Perth Facebook event for show updates.

Announced today and joining DMA’S on tour as special guests are:

Adelaide opener is SA’s Wedding Motel. Blending eerie-sad-disco with dystopian-folk motifs, Wedding Motel recently made their live debut supporting punkers Pist Idiots and draw from a wide range of influence: think “Martin Newell associated bands of the 70’s and 80’s (Stray Trolleys/Cleaners From Venus), Leonard Cohen’s Death of a Ladies Man and the sardonic mumblings of David Berman”. Kinked pop songs smothered in a hangover.

Sydney and Melbourne: Hayley Mary transitioned from frontwoman of The Jezabels to fully fledged solo artist in 2020, via killer singles such as ‘The Piss, The Perfume’, the anthemic ‘Like A Woman Should’, and triple j regular ‘Would You Throw A Diamond?’. Mary’s most recent release is her third solo EP, Fall In Love, co-recorded with DMA’S’ Johnny Took.

In Brisbane, DMA’S will be joined by special guest THE RIOT. The radical trio launched back in 2020 via their thunderous debut ‘Dog In The Shade’, which featured the talents of Matt Corby and Alex Henriksson. Unburdened by genre, THE RIOT are here to disrupt prescriptive notions of genre in a stale music ecosystem.

One thing is for certain: DMA’S put on one hell of a show. With remaining show tickets almost gone, grab them before they all go!

MOSSY

by the partae March 16, 2022
written by the partae

Where are you currently based?

South Yarra, Melbourne.

How did you first start playing music?

Started playing keyboard when I was 6. I just wanted to be able to play Kiss From a Rose and the theme song to Titanic.

What’s been happening recently?

It’s been a pretty busy couple of months directing/ editing videos with my brother for all the singles from my album.

Your debut album ‘N2KY’ will be out on March 18, what influenced the sound and songwriting?

It’s heavily influenced by Scandinavian sounds and textures—cloud rap, synth pop, nu-wave—artists like Bladee, Lust for Youth, First Hate. Lots of ambient textures, sequencers, icy synths, auto-tuned vocals.. that kinda thing.

How did you go about writing the music?

I wrote most of the original ideas on a shitty Casio Keyboard and an acoustic guitar (for the first time ever). Later in the studio with Dean Tuza (producer) we started fleshing out the ideas with different synths and programming beats on the 808 or 909. I’ve been getting my producing chops up the last couple of years so my new demos sound less… shit.

Where and when did you record/produce/master and who with?

We did the whole album in Dean’s studio in South Yarra, Melbourne. South-side represent. The album was mixed in LA by my dear friend Stuart White (Beyoncé, Jay-Z) and mastered by John Davis at Metropolis.

How did you approach the recording process?

Because the songs for this album were so raw to begin with, Dean and I referenced a lot of artists that we love, and started working out how to dress these songs properly. Some songs completely transformed. We were very thorough.

What does this album mean to you?

I didn’t really know until I finished. N2KY stands for Nice 2 Know Ya. It’s basically an album about rejecting enmeshment and dependence on others. It’s a record about craving freedom, whatever that means.

What do you like to do away from music?

I’m very interested in mental health. I read a lot of books on that. Dependence on substances and the many different approaches to dealing with that interests me as well, having had my own struggles at times. I love boxing cos it keeps me fit and focused. Big Formula 1 fan too. I also play Fortnite every day, and I love being around my friends.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

Bladee, Lust For Youth, First Hate, Iceage, Ecco2k, HTRK, Acopia.

What’s planned for 2022?

I’ve got a second album shaping up nicely, so hopefully I can get that finished!

Favourite food and place to hangout?

It’s definitely a Melbourne hot spot atm, but I can’t go past Hope St Radio. Wine is great, food is incredible, and it’s an environment that really promotes socialising—I love it, sue me.

JUST ANNOUNCED: Peking Duk’s Keli Holiday to headline inclusive and accessible gig Groove Tunes this weekend at The Corner!

by the partae March 16, 2022
written by the partae

The most anticipated accessible gig on the local calendar, Groove Tunes just got a whole lot tastier with the arrival of new headliner, Keli Holiday of Peking Duk. Announced last month and taking place this Saturday 19 March at coveted Richmond venue The Corner, Groove Tunes will present a fun and accessible night of entertainment, highlighting the creativity and inclusivity of the disability community, while also creating awareness to excel standards of accessibility in the music industry and beyond. Accessibility consultancy, Tibi Access—the incredible team of disability advocates behind the Groove Tunes project—are beyond excited to welcome Keli Holiday and his shimmering, ethereal and uplifting dance music to the fold in what is sure to be a night to remember.

From the mind of a man living off of nothing but New Order records, beer, sleepless nights and the sheer excitement and love of exploring an unknown city named New York, Keli Holiday is the solo project of Adam Hyde (one half of multi ARIA award winning, 10x platinum selling Australian eclectic electronic duo Peking Duk). In the wake of Peking Duk’s non-stop, two month North American tour, Hyde was told he had time for a holiday when he got home but instead of flying to a beach somewhere he decided to use an old guitar he had sitting in his bedroom to create something special. He sheepishly showed his best friend Thomas Stell aka Golden Features the 12 tracks he’d penned in four weeks, before Tom shared the project with Adam’s longtime idol that he’d never met—KIM from the iconic duo The Presets. KIM and Adam soon tightened up the dusty recordings and made it shine. Two years later and the marriage of longing for that holiday he’ll never get back mixed with the strumming of that dusty old guitar birthed the love child that is Keli Holiday.

Keli Holiday joins previously announced acts Matilda Pearl, Saint Ergo, Edward Roussac and Irene Zhong, rounding out an absolutely killer bill of local acts with more than half the lineup made up of artists living with disability. Tibi Access’ mission to bring the joy of live music to the disability community, while also increasing awareness of the need for events and venues to be more accessible is the driving force behind this weekend’s Groove Tunes event. Through a survey Tibi conducted in 2018, people living with a disability expressed their love of attending live music events, however the fear and lack of access stopped them from going. As an accessible gig, Groove Tunes will provide support services such as Auslan interpreters, printed braille tickets, in-venue access ramps and lowered bar access, accessible signage, a sensory zone and sensory packs, on-stage lyric videos, as well develop an accessible website and keep ticket prices low for the music industry and disability community alike—allowing access to people of all abilities to not only attend, but have a fun, safe and memorable experience.

Do not miss your chance to catch Keli Holiday in his first live show of the year at one of Melbourne’s most cherished accessible venues alongside some favourite artists you haven’t yet discovered at Groove Tunes this Saturday night. Final release tickets moving quick sticks, with free entry for companion card holders. Can’t make it on Saturday? Support Groove Tunes and your fellow gig-goers by purchasing a Pay It Forward ticket for someone in the disability community!

Van Lefan ‘Bodies of Water’ Premiere

by the partae March 16, 2022
written by the partae
Authentic, vulnerable, inspired; 樂凡 (Van Lefan, she/they) is a Taiwanese multidisciplinary artist who honors music as powerful medicine for healing, connection, transformation, and change. An inquiry into personal and collective experience, her 2022 debut album, “What Holds Us Together” is a sonic journey that synergizes folk, pop, world music, experimental soundscapes and poetry.

Together, these stories weave an immersive tapestry of ancestry, identity, ecological reverence and social justice. 樂凡’s performances have moved audiences worldwide, including a 2019 tour of Taiwan and Japan with internationally celebrated roots/soul artist Buckman Coe. Van Lefan shares a voice that transcends culture and language, speaking directly to the heart and spirit. Traversing landscapes of sound, movement, and visual arts, her work is both an invitation to inner exploration and a call to action.

1300 (pron one-three-hundred), the ascendant Korean-Australian rap group, today announce the release of their debut mixtape, Foreign Language, independently out this April 29. With the news, they share a brand new single, the biting and addictive ‘Rocksta‘. LISTEN + WATCH HERE.

Foreign Language is the dialect of 1300‘s own making. High on chaos, energy and adventure through a bombast of bass and synths galore, the journey through each song is as unpredictable as their own game of snakes and ladders. Foreign Language is indicative of the space 1300 occupy as cross-cultural artists and performers; not quite entirely ‘Australian’ nor ‘Korean’ but wholly rako, goyo, DALI HART, Nerdie and pokari.sweat‘s own. Uniquely 1300 – locally and abroad, able to convert any crowd into speakers of the group’s own foreign language.

Following ‘Oldboy‘ that scored the group playlisting across triple j, Unearthed, FBi Radio, SYN, RTR FM and praise from NME, Red Bull Music, Colors, RAGE, Sniffers, MTV, Acclaim and more, ‘Rocksta‘ is the mixtape’s second, relentless preview. Excessive and compulsive in motive, the single is another soaring example of 1300‘s ability to push genres to their extremes. ‘Rocksta‘ is a skittish, arpeggiating number that throws furious techno alongside broken, chopped, beats as each rapper dribbles across single note verses that descend with shrieking fury. Over 3 minutes, 1300 run laps in production styles, footnoting kicks, slips and diced up cuts from Death Grips to Girl Talk, Charli XCX to Yaeji, Nicolas Jaar to Ye – indicative of their eclectic prowess behind any DAW as they are behind a set of DJ decks.

Speaking to the release, the group reveal ‘Rocksta‘ is “the song that will turn YOU to a Rocksta. Reject mediocrity and embrace the chaos! Guaranteed to get your head bopping and face scrunching. We definitely wanted the hook to be in Korean, and we liked the words “chung bhaji” (ripped jeans) so that’s where Rock Star came from – Rockstas with rips on their jeans.” The single arrives as Foreign Language‘s visual climax, replete with rebellion and spontaneity. An unassuming CD discovery transform’s the music video’s protagonist into a lawless vigilante, picking fights, getting a tattoo, each member of 1300 playing pivotal characters in this fateful, raucous night out. With ‘Rocksta‘, the rabbit hole of 1300 fever continues.

‘Rocksta‘ is out now, buy/stream it here.

SYDNEY PSYCHEDELIC PURVEYORS MAZY RETURN WITH A PULSATING CIRCULAR DREAMSCAPE IN NEW SONG ‘INTERSTELLA’

by the partae March 16, 2022
written by the partae

BUY/STREAM: MAZY – INTERSTELLA

Following on from their last single ‘Flowers‘ which saw Sydney band Mazy continue to define their billowy neo-psychedelic pop sound, the band returns with an equally psychedelic, dance heavy tune in ‘Interstella’.

Sonically this new offering has all the colours of other Aussie psych masters in Tame Impala, Pond yet remains unique in it’s effortless sway and continuous pulse pushing it into an almost vaporwave soundscape akin to that of MGMT and Washed Out. The chorus triumphantly brings you in to feel the enlightening resolution of ‘floating way’ into space and through both the lyrics and harmony, the listener is planted deep within the band’s world of space and technicolour.

Mazy are continuing the Australian psychedelic revival all the while bringing the party and dance influence too. The band says of the track, “This one has become the band’s favourite track. We were given a lecture by Kim Moyes (The Presets) on how bad our cheap vocoder sound was on this, before he played us various daft punk songs to show us what a good one sounds like. We kept it anyway. It’s also Kim’s favourite now but he still hates the vocoder. Interstella explores themes of time, isolation and human connection, all through a celestial lens. It also bangs in zero gravity.”

Consisting of Ben Tierney (Vocals/Guitar), Tim Grimes (Keys/Percussion/Vocals) and Sam Clayton (Bass/Vocals), the band fuses rock n roll, acid house, pop, and dance into a kaleidoscopic explosion of colour and noise. Mazy blends hypnotic vocal melodies with anthemic guitars and soaring synth hooks which echo the likes of Jagwar Ma, POND, The Beach Boys and The Stone Roses.

With their live show being the centre of their musicianship, the band have impressed over the summer with shows such as Yours and Owls Sundays at North Wollongong Hotel supporting Aodhan, as well as Freekin Weekends at Factory Theatre in Sydney. Mazy are looking forward to sharing a plethora of new music with their fans and you can catch them playing The Metro Theatre in Sydney for Great Southern Nights in association with Sweat It Out. There they will be supporting Crooked Colours, and performing alongside a stellar line-up including PRICIE, Annie Bass, and Leer – tickets HERE

Mazy’s new single ‘Interstella’ is out now on Sweat It Out.

Babert

by the partae March 15, 2022
written by the partae
Hey Babert! How are you, what’s good and bad in your world?

Hi There! I’m fine! Not an easy question, the good thing is music and culture, the bad is the ignorance, the hypocrisy and the lack of attention we have these days.

How was the pandemic for you and what affect did it have on your music taste and style?
It has been two very hard years where there has been a real reset. Today is a new beginning

How do you evolved your own sound while staying true to your roots and own signature and not jumping on new hype bandwagons?

I think that roots are important, and that you cannot lie to the soul. It is important not to lie to oneself, and to externalize what we really are, we live in a world made only of appearance and fiction, with music you cannot lie.

Do you make music that suits certain labels or do you create first and worry about that later?

I like to create freely, and then look for the right label for that creation

What are some of the key bits of music making gear in your current set up?

In my home studio I can’t miss my mini moog and also my Maschine with which I enjoy creating new grooves every time

Where is your best environment as a dj? a small dark club or a huge outdoor festival stage? late at night for the weirdos or early so you can play slow and eclectic etc?

When I was a resident here at cocobreach I liked to play in the afternoon on the beach, and play to late at night. I was doing dj sets for 6 hours, but I also really like small night clubs! People attach to each other who transmit the vital energy thanks to a primordial thing, the dance.

How do you work, do you have an idea in your head you work towards or do you just experiment and jam and see what happens?

It depends, it can be one or the other, there are days where I start from scratch, days where I take samples and I start to work from that sample

Tell us about your gimme good love EP – what inspired or influenced it, where and when and who was it written for?

It’s a song dedicated to love, which I think is important in life. Nathalie perfectly understood the concept I was talking about and wrote some wonderful words.

Did you work with Nathalie remotely or in the studio? How did you meet?

Yes we work remotely, the Irish singer Rion S introduced us. He is an important friend for me!

What else have you got coming up/are you working on?

I’m preparing some nice things! Coming up is a collaboration with Mell Hell, an Australian DJ, which will be released soon, it will be a good record! This phase of recovery will also be a rebirth I hope!

ORION SUN RELEASES GETAWAY EP OUT VIA MOM + POP SHARES VISUAL FOR NEW TRACK ‘PRESSURE’

PRAISE FOR ORION SUN

“Orion Sun’s wide-eyed innocence and grounding timbre in her tone have always given
her lyrics a sense of closeness, like you’re right on her bedroom floor with her
trying to make sense of all the conflicting signs”

NPR

“she’s stark, frank, and lightly poetic”
Pitchfork

“Her songs are pensive, thoughtful in theme and structure.
They’re soulful scenes that are often both haunting and hopeful”

Hypebeast

“A song with an explicitly autobiographical meaning,
its opaque soul vision has a subdued but deeply moving quality”

Clash Magazine

“Sunshine-drenched, soulful music”
10 Magazine

“Tender and personal”
Tenner Magazine

“Evoking a sense of nostalgia while carving out a future-looking space for R&B”
Sniffers

“One to watch”
Purple Sneakers

Critically acclaimed singer, songwriter, and producer, Orion Sun releases her new Getaway EP via Mom + Pop. LISTEN HERE.

In celebration, the Brooklyn-based artist shares a stunning visual for her insatiable track, ‘Pressure’. Directed by Tyler Borchardt and Grace McIntee, the visual captures Orion Sun in free form, a moment that is rooted in both vulnerability and strength. “‘Pressure’ is a confession. I’m strong and weak. I don’t like to complain but I do sometimes” says Orion Sun. “This is just expressing the doubts and fears and weight that I carry. I’m learning to share some of the burden in a healthy and productive way. My life’s goal is to strive for lightness. I wanna be a featherweight champion lol. Light and free.”

The Getaway project signifies a new chapter for Orion Sun artistically and personally.  Featuring production by Rostam Batmanglij (Vampire Weekend, HAIM), Nascent (SZA, Brent Faiyaz), and Rodaidh McDonald, the collection of songs chronicle her own journey of self-discovery and healing. Arriving to large critical acclaim, Getaway sees Orion Sun stepping into her rightful position as one of today’s most essential artists.

On the EP, she says “The ‘Getaway’ EP was written during my time in quarantine and served as a form of escapism – not just from where I was physically in the world, but from some of my emotions I was feeling as well. In June of 2020 I released a song called ‘Mama’s Baby,’ which talked about my experience with police brutality in Philadelphia. Experiencing that and seeing my community plagued with covid simultaneously led me to feel that the world was a dangerous place to be. This EP was born from that. The yearning to get out and get away. The want to learn more, to grow more, to love more, and to evolve.”

Additionally, Orion Sun announced her debut headlining North American tour, which is set for Spring 2022. The shows kick off in New York on May 1st and wrap in Los Angeles on May 19th. Tickets are on sale now HERE.

25-year-old Orion Sun is firmly carving out her own lane. Unapologetically complex, her music defies the confines of genres. It features her signature style of alternative R&B that speaks deeply to her generation. Her work pulls inspiration from the greats that shaped her artistry such as Billie Holiday, Stevie Wonder, Bill Withers, John P. Kee Fred Hammond, Lauryn Hill, and others. Her previous album, Hold Space For Me, amassed over 40 million global streams and cemented Orion Sun as an artist to watch with her transformative, intimate art. It solidified her as a critical press darling by garnering large acclaim from outlets such as NPR, BBC Radio, Pitchfork, i-D, Fader, Billboard, NYLON, Hypebeast, Stereogum, and many more. Orion Sun is now a two-time 2021 Libera Awards Nominee for Breakthrough Artist/Release and Best R&B Record.

KING STINGRAY DROP BRAND NEW SINGLE ‘CAMP DOG’

by the partae March 15, 2022
written by the partae

Still buzzing from a run of sold out headline shows, King Stingray are determined to keep the vibes high with a brand new single, Camp Dog.

The band’s fourth single is an endearing tribute to the cheeky canines that patrol the streets of Yirrkala, the town in North East Arnhem Land that King Stingray grew up in.

LISTEN TO ‘CAMP DOG’ HERE

“The community camp dogs act like the boss of the streets” explains guitarist Roy Kellaway. “Kids often have to walk the long way home to avoid them. But it’s not about fear. It’s about our adoration of the character and personality of the community dogs and their funny traits. Flea-ridden, cane toad-lickin’, fish carcass-eating camp dogs. We love them, and this is a story of our life with them.”

Camp Dog follows on from bona fide hits Milkumana and Get Me Out which both made their way into triple j’s Hottest 100 at number 56 and 46 respectively.

Maintaining their mammoth momentum, King Stingray have been hand-picked to support Midnight Oil in Sydney and Cairns, and invited to join several dates on the massive Ball Park Music tour throughout June and July. Expect incredible performances at Yours & Owls, Strawberry Fields, Parrtjima and Splendour In The Grass, too.

With the band now pulling into international focus via their nomination for NME’s Best New Band In The World, 2022 truly is shaping up to be the Year of King Stingray!

About King Stingray:

King Stingray is a story of lifelong friendship and two cultures coming together. Growing up together in Yirrkala in North-East Arnhem Land, founding members Yirrŋa Yunupiŋu (frontman) and Roy Kellaway (guitar) have been playing and making music together for as long as they can remember.

Yirrŋa and Roy formed King Stingray with mates Dimathaya Burarrwanga (rhythm guitar backing vocals and yidaki), Campbell Messer (bass) and Lewis Stiles (drums). The band seamlessly blend ancient indigenous melodies with surf, indie and funk influences to create a unique sound of their own: Yolŋu surf-rock.

Propelled by the instant success of their debut track “Hey Wanhaka” in October 2020, accidental lockdown anthem “Get Me Out”, and groove-laden dance jam “Milkumana”, the band have soared to unexpected heights.

Hailed as “one of the most exciting acts in the country today” (NME), the band have taken out triple j’s ‘Unearthed Artist of the Year‘ J Award for 2021, as well as NME Australia’s ‘Best New Australian Artist‘ Award. They’re currently nominated for Rolling Stone Australia’s ‘Best New Act‘ and NME’s ‘Best New Act In The World‘.

The band spent 2021 navigating COVID-19 restrictions to wow crowds along the eastern states, completely selling out their first ever tour in March/April and gaining new fans at Dark Mofo, Splendour in the Grass XR, Boogie, Party In The Apocalypse, Beyond The City and more.

Australia’s favourite Irish singer-songwriter Dermot Kennedy is heading back to our shores in May 2022 with all his fan’s favourite tracks plus some new music in tow!

Originally planning to tour Down Under back in May 2020, his sold out run of shows had to be postponed when international borders closed.  But now we’re back in business, Kennedy will be visiting most of the original tour locations – Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney – plus upgrading some venues and adding a show in Melbourne to allow more fans to get in on the craic!

“Australia, it brings me so much joy to finally announce our rescheduled tour dates for this May! This has been a long time coming and I couldn’t be more excited to be coming back to this beautiful land. All previously purchased tickets remain valid – thank you so much to everyone who held onto theirs throughout the last two years. I can only promise you this will be incredibly special. Sadly, we were unable to reschedule the Perth shows due to current COVID restrictions, but we’ve added a new show in Melbourne on 19 May which will be going on sale this Friday at 9am local time. I can’t wait!” said Dermot Kennedy.
Dermot Kennedy has come a long way from busking on the streets of Dublin, with 23 million Spotify listeners and over 2.5 billion total streams, he has the best-selling debut album in his native Ireland of this millennium.

Without Fear, Dermot’s impassioned debut hit #1 on the UK chart and sold over 1.5 million copies worldwide, making him a platinum-selling artist in over 12 countries.  His singles, “Outnumbered”, the Meduza collaboration “Paradise,” and “Power Over Me” were all certified Gold, with “Paradise” streaming over 500 million times.

Earlier in 2022 Dermot released a galvanizing version of his most recent single, “Better Days” featuring GRAMMY-nominated duo EARTHGANG. Confidence Man Announce 2022 Australian Album Tour Dates

With ponytails higher than the heavens and moxie turned up to the max, Confidence Man are touring around Australia to celebrate the release of their sophomore album TILT [via I OH YOU + Heavenly/PIAS on 1 April 2022].

C.O.O.L. people, take note – this is Confidence Man’s only Australian tour for 2022, before they jet off to tour UK and Europe for a run of shows with Oasis legend Noel Gallagher, major festivals including Glastonbury, and a slew of headline club shows.

It’s safe to say recent singles ‘Holiday’, ‘Feels Like A Different Thing’ and album opener ‘Woman’ show Confidence Man are ready to go large. With bigger beats and even bigger attitudes, it’s nuanced pop stardom in glorious supersaturation.

Out in only two weeks, TILT simultaneously thrums with the electric energies of the club, the NYC ballroom, and the Berlin warehouse; uniting dancefloors across time and space. It is the sound of the band testing, stretching, and moulding; defining and redefining their parameters, “Wanting to push the boundaries of what Con Man could sound like” as Sugar puts it, “To take it to another dimension.”

And as we all know, the best way to enter that dimension is to witness their blistering live show. To those who have seen them live before – you ain’t seen nothing yet. Good things take time, perfection takes a little longer.

NGV CONTEMPORARY WINNING DESIGN TEAM AND DESIGN CONCEPT ANNOUNCED TODAY Inbox contact@thepartae.com

by the partae March 15, 2022
written by the partae

An awe-inspiring and timeless design by a multidisciplinary team led by Australian architect Angelo Candalepas and Associates was today revealed by the Victorian Government and the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) as the winning design for NGV Contemporary, Australia’s largest gallery dedicated to contemporary art and design.

Candalepas and their team of 20 leading architecture, design and engineering firms from around Victoria and Australia will create a powerful and sophisticated work of contemporary Australian architecture for the people of Victoria. This new 30,000 square metre Victorian landmark will celebrate the central role of art and design in contemporary life and features dramatic arched entries, a spherical hall spanning more than 40-metres-high and more than 13,000 square metres of display space for art and design, including exhibition galleries and an expansive rooftop terrace and sculpture garden with stunning vistas of Melbourne.

The arrival experience is focused around the visually arresting omphalos (the Ancient Greek word for the centre of the earth): a central spherical hall that soars more than 40 metres upwards through all levels of the building, connecting to a lantern in the sky. Monumental in scale, this colossal orientating hall will be an enveloping gallery for the display of large-scale artworks, and will also allow visitors to move through the building via a spiralling pathway. As visitors travel through this space, they will be offered an unforgettable architectural experience as they journey between the building’s levels, finally emerging on the spectacular rooftop terrace.

The design also features a number of exciting architectural spaces that will complement the exhibition galleries, including a large café directly connected to the expanded public parkland and a new NGV design store. Making the most of the building’s unique location, the scheme boasts a breath-taking public rooftop terrace and sculpture garden accessible from a rooftop, restaurant and members’ lounge. The rooftop offers expansive vistas of Melbourne’s CBD, parklands and the Yarra Ranges never-before-seen by the general public.

Befitting a purpose-built, twenty-first century gallery, the design features large format and highly flexible exhibition spaces with state-of-the-art display systems enabling the NGV to present significant works of contemporary art and design of unprecedented ambition and scale. The extent of exhibition space will allow the NGV to present international blockbuster exhibitions while simultaneously offering a dynamic program of thematic and focused presentations drawn from the NGV’s rapidly expanding permanent collection of Australian and international contemporary art and design. Offering a rich and all-encompassing cultural experience, the design also offers educational spaces, studios and laboratories for conservation of artwork.

With pathways through the building that connect the parklands to Southbank, NGV Contemporary will unify the surrounding Melbourne Arts Precinct by connecting together the wider neighbourhood and reshaping the urban experience of this important part of the city. In providing a unique architectural landmark for this complex triangular-shaped site, the winning design provides a generous and highly accessible building, with large arched public entries from the new public parkland, Southbank Boulevard and the corner of Kavanagh Street.

The building’s eastern façade incorporates a multi-level veranda, offering an external pathway between the building levels, as well as expansive views over the surrounding public gardens and Melbourne’s skyline.

The team led by Angelo Candalepas and Associates was selected following a nation-wide competition to find an Australian architectural team to design the new building. The winning design team for NGV Contemporary was selected by a jury of industry experts and professionals, including Tony Ellwood AM, Director, NGV; Jill Garner AM, Victorian Government Architect and Director, Garner Davis Architects; Francine Houben, Director of global architecture practice Mecanoo based in Delft; Corbett Lyon, NGV Emeritus Trustee and Director, Lyons Architecture (Jury Chair); Gerard Reinmuth, Director of TERROIR and Professor of Practice at UTS in Sydney; and Xu Tiantian, Director Founding Principal of DnA_Design and Architecture based in Beijing; and Special Advisor to the Jury Maree Clarke, a Yorta Yorta/Wamba Wamba/Mutti Mutti/Boonwurrung woman and an independent multi-disciplinary artist, designer and curator.

NGV Contemporary is the centrepiece of the Victorian Government’s $1.7 billion Melbourne Arts Precinct Transformation. Located at 77 Southbank Boulevard, Melbourne, NGV Contemporary will strengthen the NGV’s reputation for promoting local and international art and design at its major pre-existing galleries – NGV International on St Kilda Road and The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia at Federation Square.

The winning design team comprises: Angelo Candalepas and Associates, ASPECT Studios, BoardGrove Architects, Richard Stampton Architects, Carr, Andy Fergus Design Strategy, Steensen Varming + Mott MacDonald, Taylor Thomson Whitting (TTW), Freeman Ryan Design and AX Interactive.

The Hon. Daniel Andrews, Premier of Victoria, said: ‘This state-of-the-art gallery will be a globally recognised cultural icon right here in Victoria and generate thousands of local jobs in design, construction and over its life.’

The Hon. Danny Pearson, Minister for Creative Industries, said: ‘NGV Contemporary will showcase Australian design excellence to the world and deliver a new and spectacular creative destination to Victoria, creating thousands of local jobs and becoming an iconic reference for our great city on a global stage.’

Janet Whiting AM, President, Council of Trustees, National Gallery of Victoria, said: ‘NGV Contemporary will be a new and iconic building for Melbourne. It will be a major drawcard for tourism in this country, bringing millions of culture-seekers to our city and stimulating our economy.’

Tony Ellwood AM, Director, National Gallery of Victoria and NGV Contemporary Design Competition Jury member, said: ‘This dynamic and exciting design for NGV Contemporary creates a unifying civic space that all visitors will remember. With its uplifting and generous architecture, this design provides all Victorians will a timeless building for arts and culture that will be loved for generations.

‘This ambitious project offers an extraordinary opportunity to support our country’s local design and architecture sector. I congratulate Angelo Candalepas and Associates for their outstanding contribution to this competition and for sharing their special vision for NGV Contemporary with the world.’

Corbett Lyon, Emeritus NGV Trustee and Chair, NGV Contemporary Design Competition Jury, said: ‘Visitors will enjoy an exceptional experience with gallery spaces that will host world-class exhibitions. The iconic new NGV Contemporary will welcome visitors from the Public Realm, Southbank Boulevard and Kavanagh Street, adding to the cultural and artistic hub that attracts visitors from across Australia and the world.’

Jill Garner AM, Victorian Government Architect and NGV Contemporary Design Competition Jury member, said: ‘Australian architecture and design is of great interest around the world – Angelo Candalepas and Associates’ NGV Contemporary will be an intriguing new landmark showcasing how architecture can respond to and enhance the cultural history and life of our city. This concept embeds a vision to harness and nurture a spirit of creative communication, collaboration and engagement’.

Angelo Candalepas, lead architect, said: ‘Melbourne is the cultural capital of this nation and NGV Contemporary marks its next great offering to the world. Art and design matters to all Australians: it speaks to who we are as a community. This project signals Australia as a great contemporary nation with a significant creative force. This building will be a beacon of the culture of our time.

‘I hope NGV Contemporary will personally and emotionally resonate with all members of our rich and diverse community and deepen their understanding of the possibilities of human creativity,’ said Candalepas.

written by the partae

Artists: Armin van Buuren & R3HAB
Title: Love We Lost feat. Simon Ward
Label: Armada Music

Some collabs are so monumental fans will be raving long before its release, and Armin van Buuren and R3HAB‘s first joint effort serves as the perfect example. A delightfully catchy crossover track between two of the Netherlands‘ foremost electronic music giants, ‘Love We Lost‘ (feat. Simon Ward) is designed to bring out the feeling of summer whilst giving listeners the strength to fight for the things they believe in. With over 50 million monthly listeners on Spotify between them, Armin van Buuren and R3HAB know how to rouse the global crowd and make it happen yet again with their debut collab. Underlining the poppy chords, empowering lyrics and strong vocal presence of Simon Ward with an audacious, mainstage-tailored production, the Dutchmen supply fans with the only reason they’ll ever need to throw their arms to the sky and roar to their hearts’ content.

“What I love so much about ‘Love We Lost‘ is the special message it holds. Narrated to perfection by Simon Ward, the lyrics tells us that some things are worth fighting for even if the odds are stacked against us. I’m super stoked to have produced this track in tandem with Fadil/R3HAB, as I think very highly of him. I hope everyone who listens to the record will feel as inspired as we did when we created this song.” – Armin van Buuren

“I’m thrilled to share my long-anticipated collab with Armin van Buuren, a fellow Dutch industry leader I admire for his sonic footprint in the past decade.’Love We Lost‘ is exactly what I pictured when discussing this collaboration with Armin early on. I’m happy that we managed to blend both of our signature styles while incorporating Simon Ward‘s lion-hearted vocals. To me, it’s a record with resonating lyrics that share our message of only moving mountains for things in life that truly matter.” – R3HAB

Armin van Buuren has long been a global ambassador for electronic music. The five-time #1 DJ in the world and current #3 has seven full-length artist albums to his name and continues to cultivate a massive worldwide following through his weekly A State Of Trance radio show, event series and album series, reaching 40 million listeners from 80 different countries on a weekly basis. In non-COVID times, Armin van Buuren headlined more than 150 shows per year at leading festivals and venues around the world, including Electric Daisy Carnival (Las Vegas, New York), Ultra Music Festival (Miami) and Tomorrowland (Belgium) plus residencies on Ibiza and in Las Vegas.

Multi-Platinum DJ and producer Fadil El Ghoul, better known as R3HAB, has been trailblazing his way through dance music for the past fifteen years. With his breakthrough remixes for Rihanna, Drake, Taylor Swift and Calvin Harris, anthems such as the Platinum-certified ‘All Around The World (La La La)’ and ‘Lullaby‘, and collaborations with the likes of Ava Max, ZAYN, Luis Fonsi, Sean Paul and more, R3HAB has proven to be one of the most forward-thinking artists in the game. While his own work has collected over 7 billion streams to date and 1.1 billion in 2021 alone, R3HAB‘s CYB3RPVNK label has clocked up over 4 billion streams since its inception in 2016. R3HAB continues to evolve and diversify his sound by working with artists around the globe, pushing the boundaries of dance music as he collaborates across genres and languages. He is Spotify’s Most Discovered Artist and one of the streaming platform’s Top 200 most streamed acts, ranked #12 in DJ Mag‘s prestigious Top 100 DJs chart and has earned over 55 Gold and Platinum certificates. Additionally, he has embarked on multiple sold-out worldwide tours, was the first dance music artist to sell out 15 consecutive shows in China and performed at the world’s top festivals: EDC, Ultra Music Festival, Tomorrowland, Balaton Sound, Coachella, Summer Sonic Festival, DWP Jakarta and more.
