The final link in upholding this delicate communal connection is you, dear listener, and the time to complete that connection is now.

“PBS is always there for musicians and music lovers through good times and not-so-good times. The station’s annual radio festival is the time when music lovers show they are there for PBS, by keeping the station on air by signing up as station members.” – Adrian Basso, PBS 106.7FM General Manager

Teddy Swims announces debut headline tour of Australia & New Zealand – September 2022

by the partae May 3, 2022
written by the partae

Frontier Touring are delighted to welcome one of the hottest rising names in American music, Teddy Swims, to Australia and New Zealand for the very first time in September 2022 – the Atlanta, Georgia singer is set to perform four special headline shows in Melbourne, Brisbane, Sydney and Auckland with his electric live band, Freak Freely.

‘There is no doubt in my mind that Swims will emerge as one of the most important voices of this decade and beyond.’ – The Hype Magazine
‘Artist You Need To Know’ – Rolling Stone
‘Outrageously talented’ – James Cordon

Famous for his rich baritone, plentiful tattoos, and genre-crossing chameleon sound, Teddy (real name Jaten Dimsdale) has a following of millions, the singer just wrapping a sold-out, 33-date US tour this week, with a 20-date European leg this month. The numbers speak for themselves: 450 million+ streams globally, over 400 million YouTube views, fans spread right across the globe. Teddy Swims’ sound defies categorisation, but it sure puts a smile on your face: from soul to funk, gospel to country to R&B, it all comes back to that incredible voice. You can hear it on his just-released, retro Motown-vibed new single ‘dose’, or the viral hit ‘911’, the epic ‘Bed On Fire’ (viewed over 30 million times on TikTok), his country crossover hit ‘Broke’ (ft. Grammy nominated superstar Thomas Rhett), tracks such as ‘Love For A Minute’, and many more.

In the US, major TV hosts Ellen DeGeneres (watch here), James Corden (here) and Stephen Colbert (here) have showcased his talents, while the 29-year-old also counts famous names such as will.i.am, Nelly, Tim McGraw and Shania Twain as fans. Teddy’s 2020 cover of Twain’s ‘Still The One’ alone has earned a staggering 84 million views.

The grandson of a Pentecostal preacher, Teddy grew up inspired by Al Green and playing football, performing in metal, punk, and hip-hop outfits as a teen. In 2019 while living in Texas, encouraged by his father he started posting covers on YouTube. From Marvin Gaye, The Weeknd, Amy Winehouse, Billie Eilish and more, they were soon watched by millions, Swims’ later signing to Warner Music in 2020. 2021’s Tough Love EP immediately landed him on playlists, including Spotify’s New Music Friday, Retro Pop and Just Good Music, Amazon’s Platinum Pop and Fresh Pop, plus highlights on Tidal, Apple Music, and Pandora.

Today, Swims’ fast-rising trajectory is a result of his glorious energy, unbeatable hooks and spirit – watch him talk music and life in a recent chat with Heavily Inked here. Guaranteed to have you dancing, this is one live performance music lovers won’t soon forget!

With a cracking live band behind him and Teddy’s soaring voice, these special theatre shows are just the beginning of what’s to come down under… don’t miss Teddy Swims, performing live on stage this September!

MIZUKI AND YAAK RETURN WITH A NEW ETHEREAL FUTURE POP RECORD ‘BREATHE’

by the partae May 3, 2022
written by the partae

Following on from previous collaborative track ‘How Far We’ve Come’, today Melbourne/Naarm based producer artist YAAK teams up with Japanese/Australian singer-songwriter MIZUKI, who deliver an introspective, DnB/pop fusion ‘BREATHE’ via Hy-Lo and ON3. The track starts with an emotive edge that draws you in with a heartfelt vocal performance from emerging pop icon MIZUKI. The track opens up with a subtle delayed synth line that is then brought back to Earth with MIZUKI’s distinct vocal tone. The pre-chorus is where the influence of YAAK comes to the forefront before exploding into the chorus with the definitive DnB beat coming to fruition. The track remains at a mid tempo future pop slow burner that is equal parts danceable and equal parts graceful. The track showcases MIZUKI’s ability to bring the listener into her own musical world as well as YAAK’s deft touch for electronic soundscapes and textural ability.

The collaboration demonstrates strides into new musical territories for both artists with MIZUKI stepping into the dance-focused realm of YAAK whilst he opens up to the forward thinking pop of MIZUKI to create a stylistically versatile single that could be likened to other electronic masters like Yaeji or Pinkpantheress.

On the single, YAAK and MIZUKI expressed “the record is about being completely lost in yourself, almost to the point of not knowing that you need to be found, only for someone/something to come in and illuminate the darkness around you so that you can “breathe” again.”

Written shortly after MIZUKI’s move to Melbourne, ‘BREATHE’ serves as a chance to express the mixed emotions and feelings that come with new starts and big life changes. It’s a sign of the emotional maturity and reflection that MIZUKI holds. MIZUKI further shares, “we had been on and off with lockdowns and there were just so many mixed emotions brewing inside of me. I felt lost, I felt lonely, I felt sad, I made some incredible memories with some of my best friends – I basically just grew so much in that time. For most of my life, I had always felt this pressure inside of me to be strong and to not show vulnerability but somewhere along the way I also learnt that it’s okay to be sad and to be lost because in the grand scheme of things, it’s all just a part of the bigger picture.”

On ‘BREATHE’ YAAK details “the record came together at a really transformative moment in my life; I had just moved out of home, and it was my first time really starting to work with people outside of my camp. My first session with MIZUKI was like a breath of fresh air, we got along better than I think we both anticipated in terms of the music and personally, too. What followed was a bunch of sessions, and a bunch of records which ultimately birthed BREATHE. I feel that the production really gave me the opportunity to flex in the most subtle way possible. For anyone paying attention, there’s layers upon layers of detail; subtle, abstract textures dance across a lucid soundscape that support MIZUKI’s vocals but never take away from them. There’s this beautiful, synchronous relationship that exists between the production and the vocals, and I really believe that’s a testament to my relationship with MIZUKI.”

A former Beatport production contest winner and multidisciplinary artist and producer, YAAK has amassed millions of streams across platforms and received high praise across triple j, Pilerats, Acclaim Magazine, Happy Mag, Beat Magazine, and many more. Through his affinity for bass and rhythm music, coupled with a progressive pop and hip-hop sensibility, YAAK’s sound has evolved much from his debut EP offering ‘T I D E S’. With a tremendous enthusiasm to explore new soundscapes and production techniques, YAAK has gone on to release many records and collaborated with artists including Sam Bluer, Jalen Santoy, 506, and Jas.

An emerging artist making waves across the alt-pop / dance scene, MIZUKI has delivered a string of impressive singles ‘How Far We’ve Come’, and ‘Over The Sun’, having been supported across the likes Pilerats, Life Without Andy, Woman in Pop, When The Horns Blows, triple j’s Home and Hosed, Unearthed and FBi Radio. No stranger to a collaboration herself, MIZUKI has worked closely with the likes of Jacob Farah, Aaroon Dobos, Taka Perry, Tentendo, and with Jeremy Newall on his single ‘Waiting On You’. With her delicately soulful vocals, MIZUKI is quickly making a name for herself as one to watch.

On this release, two emerging Melbourne labels / collectives Hy-Lo Creative and ON3 Studio are also coming together to bring their shared ideology of music and community, to prove that through supporting and uplifting each other, anyone can succeed. Founded by YAAK a.k.a Jacob Trad, and George Yacoub, Hy-Lo Creative was formed in 2021 with the intention of helping budding artists navigate the (often) difficult music industry; providing the resources and support required to put their careers, and art into motion.. Similarly, ON3 Studio, founded by Aman Bayatly and Kishnel Chand in 2020 was launched as a music development and discovery collective, aiming to elevate the work of both established and emerging local acts. They operate a creative house in Brunswick, Melbourne which in its short tenure has quickly become a hub for creatives of all diverse backgrounds, locally and interstate to visit and work out of.

George and Kish from Hy-Lo and ON3 say of the release that “this collaboration between labels was to ensure that both artists get their shine, respectively. However it also gave us an opportunity to really highlight the emerging Melbourne scene, and we hope our shared collaborative ethos can inspire more to work together”.

YAAK & MIZUKI’s new track ‘BREATHE’ is out now via Hy-Lo and ON3.

Frankie Crea returns and gets personal with catchy new single ‘Plateaus’

by the partae May 3, 2022
written by the partae

He’s back! After a 3 year hiatus Frankie Crea returns with his latest single in 2022 – ‘Plateaus’.

Crea has made his presence known as a unique artist in his own right, captivating audiences along the way with his own songwriting and music that incorporates feel through his guitar playing. A definite stronghold in his artistry.

His musical journey started from the age of 5 begging his parents to buy him a guitar, by the age of 8 he was playing drums and any other instrument he could get his hands on. By the time he was 21 he was playing shows in his first band.

Now at 27, Frankie Crea has gigged and collaborated with numerous artists and continues to do so in his hometown of Perth, Western Australia. But when he is not focused on other musical projects, he focuses on music under his own name to which he started releasing in 2018. After a 3 year break from making solo music, he is back with a brand new single and its safe to say he is back strong.

‘Plateaus‘ is a return to his old favoured well known sound to the likes of his debut EP ‘Countless Days’ (released in 2018) that of which is Indie Rock. Diminished Jazzy chord type progressions run strong through the tracks verses, interwebbed with Hendrixy inspired licks, fills and basslines for days that intertwine with the guitar, backed by rocksteady drums that drives the songs juicy groove, the pre chorus vocal melody is rythmic and percussive mimicking the drums but yet packs a punch with a massive anthemic chorus which Frankie’s vocals shine through and that takes the ball home proud. Not to mention the numerous guitar solos that run through the middle and outro. Recorded, mixed and mastered in his home studio, it’s a must listen for any Indie Rock fan. Infact, anyone!.

Lyrically it delves into Frankie’s personal life, his own realisation of being faced with challenges but in the end things will be ok, and just like many of lifes challenges, we all run through “Plateaus” one way or another.

“I don’t know where I am heading/

But I know I’ll be running through Plateaus again/ ” – final closing lines of the catchy chorus in ‘Plateaus’.

“I feel like this is one of the best songs I’ve ever written. I feel that everyone faces challenges in life so we all go through good times, bad times, “Plateaus” if you will…but in the end It’s a reminder things will be ok if you stay true to  yourself, so hopefully people can relate to this song, especially with everything going on in the world the last few years. For once in my life I personally felt satisfaction after writing and recording this song and then hearing it back for the first time, It’s one I finally feel proud of and I dont get that alot from the music I make. It’s a

breath of fresh air and I think having a long break from writing and making my own music has made me realise that“.

– Says Crea, to which he further elaborated on his hiatus from making his own music:

“I planned on having a break from doing my solo music after I wrapped up recording and releasing my first album back in 2019 as I was really burnt out from a six month non stop work period on finishing the album by a certain deadline. So I thought I will take a year off, but then the pandemic happened and while pretty much every musician I know used their lockdown and isolation time making music, I instead focused on other musical projects instead of my own stuff, which in turn gave me the inspiration to hit my own studio again after some time away and first thing I layed down was the verse guitar chords of Plateaus which came to me one day randomly. Before I knew it, I completed writing and recording that song in about thirty minutes and I didn’t look back or

change anything. It just wrote itself and it magically all fell into place naturally so I was really happy with the outcome. There is nothing more rewarding than making a vision inside your head come to life that far excedes the expectations of what you originally interpreted (thought of). So its great to be back and I cant wait to share this song with everyone, I feel It’s way overdue“.

Frankie Crea’s new single ‘Plateaus’ is now available on all online music platforms.

Previous support for Nocturnal Animals
“I’m liking how there’s some dreamy sorta slacker sounds to go with your catchy and ferocious punk elements. big one!”
[About ‘Where’s My Mind Been?’]
(Declan Byrne, Triple J)
“The interjecting vocal yelps really brought this one to life. Living up to its name of fire and ice type too.” (Dave Ruby Howe, Triple J)“A slowburn of an indie punk track, combining some really nice sonic elements! Can defs sense that Weezer influence, we love to hear it.”
4 / 5 stars (Pip Rasmussen, Triple J)

“With each and every one of their tracks, the Adelaide based alt-rockers have struck gold, leaving us to seriously question just what magic tricks they have up their sleeves.” (Hysteria Mag)“A slow tempo, anthemic number that gives the parting middle finger salute to an ex-partner moving out.” (Heavy Mag)

“Nocturnal Animals pack a punch with their raw alt-rock/punk sound” (Aus Music Scene)

Known for their high-voltage grunge-pop anthems oozing with unapologetic punk-rock power, Adelaide alt-rockers Nocturnal Animals are releasing their ferocious new single ‘Dancing In The Blood’ (out April 29).

With their raw, propelling punk anthems doused in just the right amount of angst, Nocturnal Animals aren’t sleeping on the job, with the new track ‘Dancing In The Blood’ marking their second release of the year following dreamy punk puncher ‘Where’s My Mind Been?’.

Now, ‘Dancing In The Blood’ thrusts forward, dripping with visceral bass lines, frenzied electric guitar riffs and accelerating drums, the track pulsing with an energy that would make ravers of the 90s reach for their light-up goggles. Paying homage to Blink-182, Nocturnal Animals’ distinctive emo-punk infused vocals are shared between two band members, strengthening the inflection of the verse as it moves into an addictive chorus bleeding with anthemic grunge-pop hooks.

Equipped with a red-blooded instrumental breakdown featuring intensely building drums and driving guitar solos, ‘Dancing In The Blood’ screams to be played surrounded by moshpit enthusiasts past and present.

The first song that the band have ever written from a jamming sesh, ‘Dancing In The Blood’ explores the sexual tension induced dance that two people play as they thrust for connection, as the band explain:

“The song is about the raw and fleeting feeling of passion that comes from the endorphins as you play the push and pull act of hollow intimacy, both people knowing it isn’t forever but nevertheless making them feel comforted in the entanglement of one and other’s bodies.”

Nocturnal Animals are continuing to make a name for themselves, most recently supporting DZ Deathrays and seeing support for previous releases from Triple J, Triple J Unearthed, Hysteria Mag, AAA Backstage, Punktuation Mag, Heavy Mag, The Faction, Aus Music Scene, Scenestr, Moody Music Blog, Eat This Music, Radio Adelaide, 3RRR, idobi Radio and more.

Bleeding with punkish power, Nocturnal Animals’ new single ‘Dancing In The Blood’ is out on April 29.

hunter 505 Releases Lead Single ‘heart attack’ Ahead Of Forthcoming EP

by the partae May 2, 2022
written by the partae
Previous Support for hunter 505

“‘handle’ is built upon a hypnotic kick drum beat and magnetic bass line, woven within spatial production that builds to an ominous pre-chorus heralded by maximalist synth work.” (MILKY)

“‘handle’ has a modern fidelity to it that stands out from your everyday modern pop vibe. Boasting some top shelf production this one gives off some raw emotion. Jungle like beats and melodies a top with hunter 505’s unique vocal delivery make this tune a modern day bop!” (AAA Backstage)

“It twists and writhes around in these dark rnb pop areas and i was there for the whole ride.”
[About ‘handle’] (Declan Byrne, Triple J)

“Didn’t take a long time to get a handle on this. Slick production, can see Drake taking on this beat.”  [About ‘handle’] (Stacy Gougoulis, Triple J)

“This track ebbs and flows in a really cool way, I was nodding along instantly. You have such a cool sound, keep it coming!”  [About ‘handle’] (Jess Perkins, Triple J)

Dripping with hip-hop bravado fused with neo-soul sensitivity, Sydney-based artist and producer hunter 505 is unveiling the lead single to his forthcoming EP, releasing the new track ‘heart attack’ on April 29.

His second release of the year following mesmerising hit ‘handle’, hunter 505 is making a huge impact in the lead up to his newest EP, showcasing the depths of his songwriting capabilities, brought to life with intoxicating melodies and astute production.

Now, ‘heart attack’ immediately serves up a steamy chorus, featuring a valiant electric guitar riff that remains enticingly significant in its minimalism, like a heart that’s just skipped a beat. hunter 505’s self-assured vocals move unbroken above the repeating riff, joined by eerie vocal harmonies that emphasise the fluid melody.

Arriving with a change of lyrical tempo and acoustic percussion, the verse is carried with hunter 505’s confident hip-hop delivery as the expressive guitar lines continue their journey, boasting a subtle crunch that bounces off the walls and catches in the brain. Completely enthralling in its moody innocence, ‘heart attack’ contains the addictive hunter 505 quality that ensures that the track remains imprinted in your consciousness long after the last note sounds.

Written to capture the heart-stopping feeling of first love, ‘heart attack’ follows the story of a girl with hazel eyes as she helps navigate the singer through “the ghosts of the conscious and the people of stone”. hunter 505 further explains:

“‘heart attack’ represents the first moment at which we experience pure adoration for another. Even when we are in the darkest of our own places, there is always someone (or something) outside of us that can show us the light. The song emphasises rediscovering what is supreme and beautiful in the world, and that the ability to appreciate them always exists within.”

hunter 505’s previous releases have seen support from AAA Backstage, MILKY, Happy Mag, Underground Hip Hop Blog, Triple J Unearthed and more.

Lead single ‘heart attack’ is out on April 29, ahead of the release of hunter 505’s eagerly-anticipated EP ‘mood’ on May 27.

DULCIE RETURN AT A DYNAMIC HIGH WITH NEW SINGLE ‘NOTHING LEFT’ TOURING REGIONAL WA MAY, JUNE WITH AMY SHARK

by the partae May 2, 2022
written by the partae

Photo: Ashlee Tough

With the release of single ‘tell ur friends’ bringing Perth’s Dulcie back to the fore for 2022, the trio have wasted no time in serving up their next dose of indie-pop goodness, this time in the dynamic  ‘Nothing Left’.

A track that has allowed the group to delve further into the emotive and elevated songwriting, exploring new themes and sounds, ‘Nothing Left’ is delivered with confidence and a sense of self-assuredness that Dulcie have been winning crowds nationwide with during their recent tour with Ocean Alley; their largest performance run to date, with 40,000+ tickets sold.

Pulsating synths and percussion match beautifully with Dulcie’s harmonies, as lyrics detail the breakdown of a relationship and the inevitability of a situation that simply isn’t working.

“‘Nothing Left’ is about acknowledging the breakdown of a relationship. It’s the decision that it’s easier to walk away than to try to make things work. We’ve taken a pop direction with this new track, incorporating lots of new sounds and ideas.”
DULCIE

As a follow up to ‘tell ur friends’, ‘Nothing Left’ offers an interesting change of pace and brings Dulcie into different emotional territory. ‘tell ur friends’, with its sass and feisty attitude, weaves expertly with the reflective and realism of ‘Nothing Left’.

It is a touchstone of Dulcie’s development as songwriters and performers, while their dynamic as performers has only strengthened in recent years, culminating with a stunning final product.

The release of ‘tell ur friends’ repositioned Dulcie on the national radar; the single earning the group triple j rotation, editorial praise from outlets including NME Australia, Music Feeds, AAA Backstage and AMNplify, and heavy community radio and DSP support from both Apple Music and Spotify (14 playlists alone). Dulcie’s growth has been exponential since signing to WA-based artist agency Wear Your Hat (Psychedelic Porn Crumpets), knocking off over 10,000 streams monthly and elevating the trio to new heights.

Throughout April, they have been continuing to bring their sounds to life out on the East Coast, hitting Sydney and Melbourne before returning home to prepare for a long-awaited headline date at Perth’s Rosemount Hotel. Dulcie will also be returning to stages throughout regional Western Australia in May, supporting Amy Shark on her largely sold out regional tour of WA (a run that has sold over 8,000 tickets to date).

PRAISE FOR DULCIE

“New year, new Dulcie and a new spin on their empathetic songwriting that so clearly captures familiar heartbreaks.”
Triple J Unearthed, Dave Ruby Howe (‘tell ur friends’, 2022)

“I really dug their former organic ensemble sound, but DAMN if they don’t absolutely nail this pop thang!”
Triple J, Al Newstead (‘tell ur friends’, 2022)

“…infectiously sassy, uplifting, and shows perfectly just how the group have evolved these past few years.”
Backseat Mafia (‘tell ur friends’, 2022)

“Expanding on their indie-pop sonic realm, the trios latest offering brings their signature bewitching harmonies and vivid storytelling lyricism.”
Milky Milky Milky (‘tell ur friends’, 2022

“With melodies to rival Taylor Swift, Perth four-piece Dulcie have crafted a gorgeous, tight-knit collection of indie-pop magic with their debut EP, Sake of Sound. It’s sublime, delicate and towering music.”
Tone Deaf

The Plane Sailors

by the partae May 2, 2022
written by the partae

Where are you currently based?

Brisbane.

How did the band come about?

We wanted to play together for a bit of fun while at uni, then I think we realised we could do some cool things if we tried hard. So here we are shooting our shot.

What’s been happening recently?

We are in the process of writing EP #2 and we are nearly finished. Recording has already started and we are looking to get several new tracks out by the end of 2022. Plenty of gigs on the horizon too – cause that’s the best part.

Your new EP ‘Wouldn’t Be So Lucky’ is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting?

Each song on this EP aims to serve a purpose and is really a blend of 2-3 songs that we wanted to sound like. The artists we were influenced by stretch from The Beards, Foo Fighters, Pity Sex, Free Throw and Phoenix just to name a few. Each one definitely came out sounding like a Plane Sailors song which is something we are really proud of.

How did you go about writing the EP?

It was written in bits and pieces over a period of time where the band had really fallen flat. We were trying to write new music every week, but these are the songs that really stuck out and motivated us to keep pushing because honestly they were pretty good – we had never been able to say this before.

Where and when did you record/produce/master and who did you work with?

We made it ourselves, in the worst room imaginable. Spent the life savings on gear and just went for it.

How did you approach the recording process?

Sporadically. Never really got a smooth run going, but better luck next time I guess.

Favourite tracks?

Bell Curve & The Sights.

Who are you listening to at the moment? Nothing but The Hotelier and Enter Shikari. Funnily enough our new music is going to sound very much like the Hotelier and Enter Shikari.

What do you like to do away from music?

All of us like hanging out and staying pretty active together. A lot of us in the band do rock climbing together as well as boxing. We try to play board games at least once per month too, to keep the competitive spirit alive and well.

What’s planned for the remainder of 2022?

We have some of the coolest shows we may ever get to play coming up and it’s pretty exciting. Also some diverse new music.

Favourite food and place to hangout?

We have a pre-gig tradition of Langos from a shop in the valley, so that’s probably the band’s favourite. We usually hang out in our rehearsal space, we are really lucky to have it and it’s just sparks inspiration even if we aren’t doing music stuff.

Liss

by the partae May 2, 2022
written by the partae

Where are you currently based?

I’m currently based in Melbourne.

How did you first start playing music?

I first started writing music at age 9 on the piano. Songwriting has always been a passion of mine, so when I was 19 I decided to go to university and further develop my skills in songwriting.

What’s been happening recently?

I have been writing lots of music, collaborating with wonderful artists and finishing off the music video for Heartbreaker.

Your debut single ‘Heartbreaker’ is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting?

Definitely my love of pop music influenced the sound of heartbreaker. I wanted to write a song that was upbeat and one that you could dance to.

How did you go about writing Heartbreaker?

I was sick of the people I was dating having hidden agendas so I decided to write a song about what it was like being played by someone.

Where and when did you record/produce/master and who with?

I recorded the song towards the end of last year in my bedroom closet. I worked with the incredible Bhauraw for the production and mastering of the song. He was really wonderful to work with.

How did you approach the recording process?

I recorded the vocals so many times before I was happy with the pronunciation, dynamics and pitching.

Please tell us about any new music that’s on the way:

I have been working on a darker sound for my second single. It’s called ‘I don’t want to sleep with you,’ so keep an eye out!

What do you like to do away from music?

I love to bake, go to comedy shows and spend time with my cat.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

I’ve been loving Olivia O’Brien, Sally Boy, Brenzy and Maxine recently.

What’s planned for the remainder of 2022?

More music, performing and hopefully an EP.

Favourite food and place to hangout?

My favourite food is sushi and my favourite place to hangout is in the studio.

Vermont are back with angsty new single “Over Our Head”

by the partae April 29, 2022
written by the partae

Melbourne emo alt rockers Vermont are releasing their first single of 2022, the angsty yet melancholic offering “Over Our Head“. The video is streaming today via Milky Milky Milky after it debuted on triple j Short.Fast.Loud last night.

The single was produced, mixed and mastered by Ocean Grove‘s Sam Bassal, who adds a bouncing confidence to the release. “Over Our Head” lyrically dives into toxic situations and the challenges faced when navigating the ups and downs and the struggles involved in overcoming them.

Emerging from the roller coaster of the previous two years, the pandemic carried the weight of uncertainty for most involved in the music and arts industry, and it most certainly took its toll on Vermont. Passions and commitment to what was once what the quartet loved most was tested in some very unique ways, and this new release provided a beacon of hope for the alt rock outfit.

“It took a year in the making, and as a collective we knew that we wanted to strive for something more challenging and ultimately more superior than anything we’d attempted in the past.” says vocalist Josh Swanwick

“Sam Bassal was an undeniable influence behind our ultimate final product. The moment we met with Sam was the moment we knew this release would mark a very special time in Vermont’s existence. This song marks the beginning of a new era for Vermont; an era in which we will value the precious moments shared with our best mates and every second shared performing our creation.”

Hailing from Melbourne’s West is four-piece melodic alt rock outfit Vermont comprised of members Joshua Swanwick (Vocals), Jono Hnatejko (guitar), Nathan Borg (Bass) and Curtly Lyon (Drums). Vermont emerged with their own brand of alternative rock in 2017 when they debuted with “Lonely Mind” and shortly after followed it up with their heart-wrenching melodic anthem “Breathe” in 2018.

The quartet found a taste for catchy chorus hooks, angsty, powerful vocals and melodic lead lines and in 2020 they released their self-titled debut EP. Featuring popular tracks “Ruin” and “Solace”, the EP was well received, described as “perfectly mixing ferocity and vulnerability” by The Creative Issue with triple j play from multiple programs.

Vermont cut their teeth touring with a slew of genre heavy-hitters like Stuck Out, Stepson, Pridelands, Rumours, Reside, The Comfort and more and never fail to capture an aura of emotion and sentiment through their ability to story-tell.

“Over Our Head” will be available and streaming on all platforms tomorrow, Friday April 29.

Australian psych upstarts The Lazy Eyes share their new video for ‘Imaginary Girl’ following the release of their highly praised debut album, SongBook. WATCH HERE, LISTEN HERE.

Created by London-based animator George Wheeler (Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Loyle Carner, Palace), the video combines live-action and animation depicting the glitchy loop of a person obsessed with a fantasy. We follow them as they slip from one reality into another – from a lonely train carriage to a world of kissing nymphs and giant plants.

The video follows the release of the band’s debut album, SongBook including previously released tracks ‘Where’s My Brain???‘, ‘Tangerine‘, ‘Cheesy Love Song‘, ‘Fuzz Jam‘, ‘Hippo‘, ‘Starting Over‘, and more, which drew high praise from all corners of the world, including Dork, CLASH, DIY, Spin, KCRW, DORK, Mojo, NME, VICE, triple j, Unearthed, Lauren Laverne of BBC 6 Music, 3RRR, 2Ser and more. A sumptuous, prismatic tapestry of modern-day psychedelia sans pastiche or revivalism, SongBook is music for free-roaming adventurers of imagination, whose unbounded appetite for Imagineering is matched only by its expansive creative palette. As the record unfurls, The Lazy Eyes uncover the myriad sides to their psych-rock sound, from driving, distorted, Black Sabbath-esque guitar riffs to the sunnied, vintage-soaked escapism of 60s psych-pop, from blistering dual guitar solos to washed out, effects-lathered shoegaze to lovelorn ballads full of plush baroque, orchestral flourishes.

The band is currently on their headline album tour stopping in Meaninjin/Brisbane this weekend, followed by Gubbi Gubbi/Maroochydore, Ngarangwal Land/Gold Coast, Dharawal Land/Wollongong, Awabakal Land/Newcastle, and Eora/Sydney before heading over to the UK for their debut run of shows alongside performances at this year’s The Great Escape. They will return home to continue their Australian tour before jumping on stage at Splendour In The Grass, supporting The Strokes in Eora/Sydney and Naarm/Melbourne, and playing alongside artists like Arlo Parks, and Matt Corby at Gang Of Youths-curated festival A More Perfect Union. See full dates and details here.

“1300’s music is a conscious-expanding experience transcending language”
Sniffers

1300 (pron one-three-hundred), the trailblazing Korean-Australian rap group, have unveiled their debut mixtape, Foreign Language. LISTEN + WATCH HERE.

Inspired by the consistent state of flux, Foreign Language is indicative of the cross-cultural place 1300 occupies as a foreign entity, not quite fitting in with the local so-called Australian scene nor the folks back home in Korea. Their music embodies the endless possibilities of creativity that emerge from paving your own path, existing between and across multiple cultures, allowing us to connect in a way that words alone cannot.

Foreign Language is a dose of high-energy rap music that transcends language barriers through banging beats and hard-hitting vocal performances. Reflective of the chaotic nature of the group’s upbringing, straddling alternate worlds, and varied musical experiences, Foreign Language is a whirlwind of bass and synth that triggers excitement. Produced and mixed entirely by 1300, their debut mixtape can convert any crowd or listener into speakers of their own foreign language.

The mixtape’s title track arrives today with a music video directed by frequent collaborator Raghav Rampal, following the group around an adventure at Luna Park. Speaking to the release, 1300 share that Foreign Language is “A celebration of friendship and 1300 as a collective,” and that visually the title-track serves “the idea of the camera as a foreign entity that the boys find and then decide to hang out with for a day – so we travel with the boys in an arcade, karaoke and Luna Park. We just got everyone together and shot something fun because we blew the budget on all the other videos. It was literally just all of us hanging out and having fun.”

The result is a furious mashup of hyperactivity, born from Nerdie and pokari.sweat’s genre-bending production, helmed by rako, goyo and DALI HART’s gritty flows, juxtaposed again with Nerdie’s lazily-sung hooks. Trolling through abrasive bounce on ‘Shake It‘ to chopped and screwed on ‘Come On‘, drum and bass nods in ‘Woah Damn‘ and ‘No Talk ft. Agung Mango‘, boom bap on ‘Undercover‘, ‘Ralph‘s spaced out breakbeat and EBM sub-heavy ‘Payphone ft. Raj Mahal‘ or the gentle afrobeat of ‘Worldwide‘ – the sound of 1300 can be neither pigeonholed nor defined in simple stylistic terms.

What guides 1300 is their strength as a collective, concentrating each of their artistic visions and personalities into one seamless whole. Lyrically bound by the pursuit of feeling, each rapper flirts with the production, the syllabic shape of their words shifting from breathless to animated through autotune and back again. Through their production, inspired by Super Smash Bros to The Fast and Furious, Wreck-It Ralph, Far East Movement’s ‘Like A G6’ and BLACKPINK, 1300 prove nothing is off-limits.

Since their debut release in 2021, ‘Brr‘, 1300 have continued to ascend, culminating in their breakthrough release ‘No Caller ID‘. Praised by tastemakers including Acclaim, Purple Sneakers, AUD$ and Korean rappers Palo alto and Lil Boi, it was ‘Smashmouth‘ that took the group to fever across triple j, Feature Artist on Unearthed and praise from Rolling Stone, NME, Sniffers and more. Following a remix of Payday and Danny Brown‘s ‘Vampire‘ and their riotous, live show, 1300 have since supported stages with Genesis Owusu, PNAU, Shady Nasty and more, plus festivals including Beyond The Valley, Field Day, Wildlands Festival and soon, a sold-out appearance at VIVID LIVE and Splendour In The Grass.

This year they continue to conquer with ‘Oldboy‘ and ‘Rocksta‘, securing fans in triple j with their debut Like A Version performance covering Psy’s ‘Gangnam Style’, acclaim from Complex Australia, VICE, Pedestrian, Junkee, Red Bull Music, Sydney Morning Herald, RAGE, MTV, The Music, Music Feeds, and community radio play nationally, including FBi, SYN, RTR FM and more. Today, the self-proclaimed boys from outer space arrive with the release of Foreign Language. Over thirteen tracks, rappers rako, goyo, DALI HART and producers Nerdie and pokari.sweat, rewrite the rulebook with their explosive Korean-English raps. Each song is as unpredictable as the next and uniquely, 1300.

Foreign Langauge is out now, buy/stream it here.

by the partae April 29, 2022
written by the partae

+ special guests announced – Greatest Hits (BNE), Molly Millington (SYD) & Queen P (MEL)

  • Ladyhawke’s Time Flies east coast tour dates officially rescheduled to November 2022
  • Playing The Triffid in Brisbane on Tuesday 8 November, Factory Theatre in Sydney on Wednesday 9 November, and Corner Hotel in Melbourne on Sunday 13 November
  • Joined by special guests Greatest Hits (Brisbane), Molly Millington (Sydney) and Queen P (Melbourne)
  • General public tickets for the new November dates are on sale now at frontiertouring.com/ladyhawke

After being forced to postpone her Australian tour dates earlier this year due to COVID-19 travel restrictions in Australia and New Zealand, Frontier Touring are excited to announce the newly rescheduled tour dates for Ladyhawke’s Time Flies Tour.

The multi-ARIA Award winning artist will return to Australia for the first time in five years with shows at The Triffid in Brisbane on Tuesday 8 November, Factory Theatre in Sydney on Wednesday 9 November, and the Corner Hotel in Melbourne on Sunday 13 November.

While in Australia Ladyhawke will also be playing at Summer Camp Festival in Sydney and Melbourne, as well as regional Victoria’s Chillout Festival in Daylesford.

We are happy to also announce today that joining the tour line-up are special guests Greatest Hits, who will open for Ladyhawke in Brisbane, Molly Millington in Sydney, and Queen P, supporting in Melbourne.

“It’s been five years since I‘ve been able to tour internationally – five years of pent-up energy that I am so excited to bring to the stage in Australia in November! Super stoked to have Queen P, Molly Millington and Greatest Hits join me on this fun run. A massive thank you to Frontier Touring for all their hard work and dedication in re-scheduling and pulling these shows together. And to the patient and dedicated fans who have been holding on to their tickets – I see you and cannot wait to sing with you in November.” – Ladyhawke

Tickets for the original performances will be valid for the rescheduled dates without taking further action. Patrons are encouraged to #keepyourtickets but if unable to attend a new show date may obtain a full refund. Refund requests must be submitted prior to Friday 27 May via the official ticketing agency

November 2022 rescheduled tour dates (increased capacities):

Tue 8 Nov – The Triffid, Brisbane QLD (prev. Fri 25 Feb)
Wed 9 Nov – Factory Theatre, Sydney NSW (prev. Tue 1 Mar & Wed 2 Mar)
Sun 13 Nov – Corner Hotel, Melbourne VIC (prev. Tue 8 Mar, Wed 9 Mar & Thu 10 Mar)

Ladyhawke will be touring in celebration of her latest album Time Flies [BMG], which was released in November 2021 and described as ‘her best album yet’ by Music OMH. Our first taste of Time Flies came in the form of singles ‘Mixed Emotions’, penned with Jono Sloan and Nick Littlemore (both of PNAU, Empire of the Sun), lead album single ‘Guilty Love’ featuring BROODS, which has amassed 1.39m+ streams, and latest single ‘My Love’, which was written in collaboration with Josh Fountain, one of Australia’s most in-demand music producers.

Joining Ladyhawke at Brisbane’s The Triffid on Tuesday 8 November will be Greatest Hits, a project of artist Ryan Cooper and a collective of his friends from around the globe. The group, whose debut single in the UK received BBC Radio 1 play, have toured extensively with the bands Hollow Coves, and Halfnoise (Zac Farro of Paramore). Greatest Hits sees Ryan step forward as writer-producer. The ‘Phil, Slow It Down’ and ‘Trying’ group blend 70’s groove, sunshine pop, and neo-psych, with lyrical sarcasm whilst tackling themes of failure, identity and growing up.

Opening for the Sydney legs of the Time Flies tour will be self-proclaimed ‘possessed pop’ singer Molly Millington. Compared with the likes of Olivia Rodrigo and Melanie Martinez the ‘Ring Master’ singer sprinkles her lyrics with sentimentality, coloured by vibrant soundscapes and edgy undertones. Molly’s newest single ‘October’ was released in October and has already amassed more than 92.7k+ streams to date, peaked at number #4 on the Shazam Discovery Chart, landed triple j spot rotation and featured in triple j’s New Music Hitlist playlist.

Helping to close out the tour is South Sudanese Australian rapper and poet Queen P (aka Piath Mathiang) who will be opening the Melbourne show on Sunday 13 November. Blurring the lines between hip hop, pop, RnB and electronic, P released her first mixtape Bring Black Back in 2018. Her darting flow and impenetrable rhymes elevated her from the underground to the forefront, supporting the likes of Masta Ace (USA), Billy Davis & The Good Lords, and Cool Out Sun, as well as landing festival slots at Strawberry Fields, Groovin The Moo, The Australian Open, St. Kilda Festival (Main Stage) and Bigsound. Queen P has gone on to receive a National Live Music Award nomination in 2019 and featured on the latest single from Holy Holy titled ‘Port Rd’, which heralded the #1 song in rotation on triple j and reached 1 million Spotify streams.

Tickets to the rescheduled 2022 dates are on sale now via frontiertouring.com/ladyhawke.

MEGAMIX SOCIAL
Arts Centre Melbourne – from April onwards

Yolngu hip hop artist Baker Boy will headline free concerts at Hamer Hall as part of MEGAMIX Social – Arts Centre Melbourne’s fully subsidised program of music, theatre, circus, tours and workshops for primary and high school students.

The program, presented in partnership with the Victorian Department of Education and Training as part of the Positive Start in 2022 initiative, is designed to promote wellbeing through the access to the cultural experiences missed during the COVID 19 pandemic.

Carefully curated with young music fans in mind, the MEGAMIX Social: Baker Boy shows on June 7 and 9 are a rare opportunity for students to see Danzal Baker, aka Baker Boy, who raps in English and Yolngu Matha representing his Arnhem Land family. A former Young Australian of the Year, he hopes to inspire younger generations to embrace their culture and become leaders in their communities. Audiences will be warmed up by a DJ and two special guest performers.

The music program will be also include creative music workshops on Hip-Hop lyric writing, household techno and composition at Arts Centre Melbourne’s dedicated learning hub The Channel, followed by a visit to the Australian Music Vault, an immersive exhibition celebrating the Australian contemporary music story.
The MEGAMIX Social: Theatre and Experience Program includes exceptional drama, dance and circus performances in the Playhouse and Fairfax Studio. The season includes Windmill Theatre Company’s Creation Creation, Flying Fruit Fly Circus’ Girls with Altitude, Sydney Dance Company’s Impermanence, Persian love story Dorr-e Dari and a mirrored art installation Kaleidoscope.

“After two years of remote learning we are simply thrilled to be welcoming students back to Arts Centre Melbourne’s iconic venues for such an exciting and fun program. We know memories created here will last a lifetime,” says Arts Centre Melbourne’s Head of Creative Engagement Cynthia Nolan Myers.

As part of the Positive Start in 2022 program, MEGAMIX Social is open to all students who attend a government or low-fee non-government school. The program is also available to students in one of the following categories: rural and regional students; students with disability; Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students; culturally and linguistically diverse students; students from disadvantaged or low SES backgrounds; students in Out of Home Care; students identified as vulnerable or at risk of disengagement.
