Watermelon Boy, Ritchie Loop & Mark Dwyer – Break That Board

by the partae November 4, 2022
written by the partae

Waking from the meditation, your eyes open. A big breath in, a big breath out. You hold your hand high above your head and *CRACK* it slices through the timber. Watermelon Boy returns with another tropical club classic. This time teaming up Kingston’s Richie Loop and Jamaican-American Mark Dwyer for the martial arts motiffed Break That Board.

A percussive, twerky rhythm peppered with 90’s fighting game sound FX. Richie Loop’s distinctive vocals are familiar from his collaborations with Hardwell, Timmy Trumpet, Henry Fong, Steve Aoki, Vybz Kartel & Sean Paul. He adds a ripe dancehall flavour to the tune and enacts chorus with the proficiency of a 5th dan black belt. Emerging rapper Mark Dwyer burst into the second verse with a 12 hit combo that shuffles like Ali’s footwork. Combining his passions of tropical sounds, martial arts and vintage gaming, Break That Board is Watermelon Boy’s most personal work yet. A track to motivate, inspire & elate. Break That Board is out Today! (4th of November 2022).

Von Sharp – Save Me (feat. Erin Ezekiel)

by the partae November 4, 2022
written by the partae

Von Sharp is the creative project from Queenslander Stu Galligan, a gentleman who at 40 decided that more than anything, he wanted to make music. After a couple of decades building a more conventional career, the artistic impulse reached fever pitch and Von Sharp was born. A lover of classic dance music, the Von Sharp sound has clear elements of early trance and euro-dance. Speaking about the genesis of this project Galligan says “My first song Day Dreamer was a complete secret kept from my friends and family. It was a mammoth effort and a long way from perfect but a huge learning experience and big box ticked.  When working on the follow up track Stu enlisted a pair of collaborators to lift the track to the next level. “ Erin and her husband Paul, who is a Producer, are from the US and are now living in Spain.

These guys are career musicians and are living in a beautiful part of the world, playing live music at some really stunning venues. When I first heard Erin’s voice I immediately knew where it would fit and that point in time was the beginning of Save Me. ”  Stu had already written the words to Save Me “When I wrote the lyrics I was thinking of a good friend and his long time partner who had just broken up but it also applies to my own situation.  The pressure that money, in-laws and you and your partners own expectation can place on a relationship throughout the course of life is sometimes too much for some couples.  In this instance, it’s happily ever after.

Using his existing lyrics, Erin created a topline that fit perfectly with Stu’s track. “Erin’s vocal sound is first class and she had a hand in creating the top line melody.  I really hope to see Erin perform the song to a live audience, she’s a true professional and a very experienced live performer.”

Save Me (feat. Erin Ezekiel) explores the notion of not being prepared to let true love wither. Romantic at heart and energetic by design Save Me (feat. Erin Ezekiel) has nostalgia at its core. Memories of first loves, bygone summers and distant raves flashback like dancefloor strobe-lights. Triumphant and sweet, Save Me (feat. Erin Ezekiel) is a case of passion coming first. Out Today!

Matt Corby, the multi-award winning songwriter and producer, today shares his latest offering through ‘Problems‘, debuting a newly canvassed creative canon. LISTEN HERE.

On the day Matt Corby was meant to start recording his new album, he and his family were instead rescued by a neighbour. Their home had been engulfed by the flood waters that raged through Queensland and NSW in early 2022. After nervously watching his heavily pregnant partner and young son be whisked away in a small inflatable dinghy, he got to work ferrying provisions to stranded locals and digging rotting mud out from beneath his home.

Within a week of these life-altering events, Matt returned to the studio and ‘Problems‘ was made. An instrumentally rich release that affirms his studio powers to complement his esteemed range as a vocalist. Trickling further into his longstanding RNB influences, hazy vocals, wiggly bass, skiffling drums and warbling keys are each given moments to softly pull into focus, before gliding back into the mix to demonstrate his mastery of space.

Complete with captivating live riffage and smart studio trickery at just the right times, ‘Problems‘ footnotes as varied a pool of sonic terrain as Moodymann to Kevin Parker, D’Angelo and Yussef Dayes. More so reflective of Matt’s own scrupulous production prowess and carefully refined craft that reflects his comprehensive study of studio pioneers.

Highlighting the release’s lyrical observations on human behaviours, Matt explains, “It’s about how funny humans are creating our own problems and issues that we then have to solve. Or creating problems so difficult we then can’t solve,” he says. “And how people talk so much shit and don’t do anything – how we’re setting ourselves up for failure. People want to point the finger but nobody wants to carry anything themselves.”

Recorded at his Rainbow Valley Studios with Chris Collins (Gang of Youths, Middle Kids, Skegss), ‘Problems‘ is Matt Corby’s first taste of new music since his 2020 stand-alone singles, ‘If I Never Say A Word‘ and ‘Vitamin‘, after his J Award-winning Rainbow Valley LP in 2019. In the time since, Matt announced the launch of his own independent record label, in between loaning his production expertise to work by Genesis Owusu, Jack River, Great Gable, Bud Rokesky and most recently, Budjerah. Stay tuned as Matt continues to refocus his creative vision onto his own work in the new year.

‘Problems‘ is out now via Island / Universal,

INFLUENTIAL PUNK VETERANS NOFX RELEASE NEW SINGLE “PUNK ROCK CLICHÉ”

INFLUENTIAL PUNK VETERANS  NOFX RELEASE NEW SINGLE
“PUNK ROCK CLICHÉ,” OFF FORTHCOMING RECORD  DOUBLE ALBUM

DOUBLE ALBUM PRODUCED BY BILL STEVENSON & JASON LIVERMORE (BLASTING ROOM)

IN STORES AND ONLINE VIA FAT WRECK CHORDS
ON FRIDAY, DECEMBER 2  WITH PRE-ORDER AVAILABLE NOW

NOFX TOURING AUSTRALIA THIS DECEMBER AS PART OF GOOD THINGS FESTIVAL

FAT Wreck Chords and iconic West Coast punks NOFX are excited to present “Punk Rock Cliché,” the second single to be lifted from the Friday, December 2 release of the band’s brand new record, Double Album. Produced by Bill Stevenson (Descendents) and Jason Livermore (Blasting Room), Double Album brims with unbridled creativity, cheeky lyrics, and easily stands as one of NOFX’s best albums to date.

LISTEN TO “PUNK ROCK CLICHE”

PRE-ORDER DOUBLE ALBUM

What better way to celebrate an album release than a tour. NOFX will be in Australia as part of Good Things Festival kicking off on December 2 this year (album release day). Full details below.

At this point in your career, why do a double album?

“I wish I knew,” the fat one offers, almost confounded why anyone would ever ask him that question in the first place. “OK. I mean, we have a lot of records. I’m not sure how many, let’s call it 15 with 10 more EPs and 65 7″s. I wanted to do a double album cuz there are no good ones out there. Pink Floyd’s The Wall is about it. Quadrophenia is OK, I guess, if you’re a Who fan. Definitely not [The Beatles’] White Album. I don’t think anybody else has made good double albums. Certainly not Husker Du, Minutemen, or Smashing Pumpkins.

“I really like Single Album a lot, but the songs on Double Album aren’t quite up to scratch. All these songs were recorded at the same time, except this one was finished two years later. I think it’s a very enjoyable album, and maybe our funniest. I think it is what a lot of our fans will want to hear and it’s a great side three and four for a double album. I accomplished my goal of making a solid double-album, but it just took a lot longer than I expected.”

Reuniting with punk-rock legends Bill Stevenson and Jason Livermore for producer/engineering duties, it’s not hyperbolic to say NOFX are making their best music now. But that’s not to imply everything else they’ve done was crap, either. But Double Album reminds both ardent fans and casual listeners that NOFX weren’t born to follow trends. Indeed NOFX—Fat Mike, guitarists Eric Melvin and El Hefe, and drummer “Smelly” Eric Sandin—have carved their logo into the veneer of punk-rock culture for decades. With nearly 40 years in this circus, you’ll meet people and do/see/conspire to get all the wildest shit done. Remember how one of the stipulations of the NOFX book Hepatitis Bathtub was that none of the band members could see what the other ones were writing about them? Well, this time, Mike got permission to blow up the foibles and peccadillos of people in song for maximum velocity and hilarity.

There’s “Joanna Constant Teen,” a 78-second tribute to the dominatrix that spent six weeks in Mike’s NYC-based Airbnb during the production run of his musical, Home Street Home. (“She just moved in and played with me every night. She’d be like, ‘Mike; it’s time to write another song. Get started, or you know what will happen!’ That was really cool. Obviously, I didn’t write that much.”) “Alcopollack” is about booking agent David Pollock, who has worked with the band for over 30 years and has lost more than his fair share of clients for his too-brazen honesty. (“I asked him if it was OK if we put this on the album, and he’s like, ‘Yeah sure, it’s mean but funny.'”) “Fuck Day Six” is a story detailing the time Mike cleaned out (pun sorta intended) in a rehab run by Buddhists, with plenty of name (and deuce) dropping. (“Anybody who has gotten off of opiates knows what ‘day six’ means.”) “Is It Too Soon If Time Is Relative” is a hilarious ‘n’ cruel takedown of the acclaimed author/physicist Stephen Hawking. (“I wrote that before he died,” is Mike’s mea culpa. “It’s not quite as funny anymore. I wanted him to hear it.”)

Naturally, Mike has made a career drilling and riveting the word “self” into “self-deprecation,” and he’s sure as hell not going to stop now. With such future classics as “Darby Crashing Your Party?,” “Punk Rock Cliche,” the song that got dropped off the Blink album California after the band found out that Skiba co-wrote it with Fatty (Although it was their favourite song). Mike also admits that the Blink version of the song was better), and the too-real, too-bittersweet, too-funny tracks “My Favorite Enemy” and “Don’t Count On Me,” he’s still ready to take a cream pie to the face, even if it has broken glass and sharpened nails in it.

“You have to laugh at everything,” Mike reveals, “because the world is just falling apart and you have to have a good attitude not to take things seriously. So this is how I’ve always done it. I make people laugh every day. I usually do it in a self-deprecating way, it’s just how I go through life: I have as much fun as I can. That’s what life is—trying to find all the happiness you can. And spreading happiness. Which is what I feel like is supposed to be my job in life—spreading joy.” The determination to continue making compelling music, keeping the bar high for punk, and doing the best thing for their punk-rock legacy, makes NOFX simply unstoppable. Double Album is filled with moods, tales, and tempos slightly faster than an ice-road trucker backsliding down a hill. What’s their secret? Quite simply, NOFX isn’t half-assing anything.

Mike laughs. “I full-ass everything. Literally.”

BELLA DEER makes a stunning introduction with ‘BLOOM’

by the partae November 3, 2022
written by the partae

With a vocal quality that matches the instant charisma her presence exudes on record, Melbourne’s Bella Deer makes her debut with the gorgeous single ‘Bloom’.

As her first release, premiering with Backseat Mafia this week, Bella Deer demonstrates her boldness as a writer and performer, with ‘Bloom’ exploring her impressive range as a vocalist – and vision as a songwriter.

A composition that strikes hard with emotional keys and rousing rhythms, ‘Bloom’ is the perfect introduction to an artist who is taking a confident stride into the spotlight.

Written in 2019,  ‘Bloom’ is one of those rare pre-pandemic songs that has only taken on more strength and significance as we come out of what was such a period of unpredictability. With ‘Bloom’, Bella Deer navigates feelings of self-doubt and inner struggles – inevitably finding the light and power in acceptance and moving forward.

“This song is about struggling with self confidence and mustering the courage to simply be yourself and accepting who you are and what you stand for. When you start to do this, you find that you’re accepted despite those fears. It also explores the frustrations with the lack of meaningful human connections in our society in a tech obsessed world.”
BELLA DEER

For this song, Bella Deer worked with Joel Quartermain (Eskimo Joe, MEG MAC) on production and mixing, with final mastering completed by Stuart Hawkes of Metropolis (Amy Winehouse, Ed Sheeran). The final result, a shining mix of indie and pop sensibilities that fans of artists like HAIM, Caroline Polachek and Weyes Blood will instantly be drawn to.

‘Bloom’ also has an accompanying music video, premiered by the AU Review, released today. Filmed in Ceres, Victoria with James Duggan (True South Film), Bella Deer kept the focus on the central themes of finding light out of the darkness.

“The ‘Bloom’ video explores the power of bright colour and light; it symbolises moving away from inner darkness and doubt that has been staring back at you in the mirror for quite some time.”
BELLA DEER

A seasoned musician, Bella Deer has cut her teeth on stages with the likes of Husky Gawenda, Thando and Emma Donovan and The Putbacks in the past in different projects. With this new music and moniker, she enters a new era of artistry – one marked by strong songwriting skills and performance strength to match.

Bella Deer will launch ‘Bloom’ at an exclusive set of shows in Victoria this October and November.

Watermelon Boy Discusses New Track ‘Break That Board’

by the partae November 3, 2022
written by the partae

Where are you currently based?

Hey Team! Earlier this year I moved from Brunswick back into Fitzroy. It’s great to be closer to the action again. I love the nightlife here and the energy of Fitzroy is always a buzz.

You’ve recently joined forces with Ritchie Loop and Mark Dwyer, how did this collab come to be?

I had the idea for Break That Board and had come up with the basic rhythm & bassline. I knew that finding the right vocalists would be paramount. I actually connected with Mark first and he laid a killer verse. I knew that we needed a more dancehall style vocal for the chorus and Richie Loop has the perfect sound. The fact that he’s worked with some of my hero’s like Henry Fong & Vybz Kartel was obviously a major bonus. He added so much flavour to the track and really contrasted nicely against Mark’s verse. The track very quickly started to feel complete.

‘Break That Board’ is the killer track that’s come from the collab, what influenced the sound and songwriting?

The tuned percussion is pure Watermelon Boy but I used a more twerky rhythm this time which gave it a different groove. When the vocal recordings came back to me, it all reminded me of 90’s fighting games like Street Fighter II so I recorded a bunch of samples that sounded like the commentary from those types of games. Adding those and the game soundFX really solidified the flavour of the track.

How did the songwriting process take place?

I had the “Mind like a rock, hand like a sword…” concept in my head and wanted to pay tribute to karate bad-assery. I’ve done karate since I was a kid and had never really crossed it over into music in any way. So I sent that to Mark with the beat and he wrote his verse around that. Same with Richie Loop. They both came back with their own lyrics that involved hard work and self improvement which are cornerstones of traditional martial arts. So the track has this “zen” to it which I think is so cool because there’s a correlation with being a musician or any kind of artist. The themes of working hard, honing your skills, so you can be creative, masterful and unpredictable.

Where and when did you record/produce/master?

It was very much a modern recording process with me producing and mixing from Melbourne while Richie recorded in Jamaica and Mark the US. It all came together earlier in the year

What programs/equipment were used?

I write in ableton live and mix internally, recently I’ve started doing a little “pre-master” where I run the track through some outboard gear to give it a little extra shine. I’m also finding that this helps me get a really nice mix because it shows up anything that’s unbalanced. So I’ll end up running the track out a few times and making fine adjustments before sending it to Klaus Hill for the final master. I use an SSL Fusion for a bit of colour as well as a buss compressor from Audioscape and a really nice Australian made EQ from High Voltage Audio.

What were the most challenging and rewarding aspects of creating Break That Board?

It’s always hard working in opposing timezones but if one isn’t in a hurry it can still be reasonable. Hearing the track come together and getting the master back was damn rewarding. It might be my favourite Watermelon Boy work yet. And that’s cool.. To continually make music you’re excited by.

Will we be hearing more tracks from this trio?

I think we’ll have to make more! This was such a ball and came out sounding so solid it’s inspired me to push this sound further.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

Hagan, Digital Afrika & BRYAN THE MENSAH are making some of my favourite music at the moment. I’m also really enjoying listening to Alex Jones get raked over the coals on the Knowledge Fight podcasts and being updated on Australian cookers and con-artists on The Conditional Release Program.

What’s planned for the remainder of 2022 going into 2023?

I’ll be playing Cloud 9 in Fiji on the 7th, 8th & 9th of December. It’s a perfect venue for Watermelon Boy; The tropical setting on the water, busting chill tunes with pizza and cocktails. Such a great way to spend a vaycay. On the 21st of Dec I’m hosting a Summer Solstice Variety Show at The Evelyn in Fitzroy with some VERY special guests that I’ll be announcing soon.

Favourite food and place to hangout?

For lunch I love any place with decent vegan sandwich options, that includes Viet Rose Bakery or Nico’s Sandwich Deli in Fitzroy. Around dinner time I’ll frequent one of the local institutions like Afghan Gallery, Madame K’s, Fina’s or The Rainbow Hotel. As far as bars go, we have so many brilliant ones around but you’ll likely find me at Nighthawks in Collingwood which is always a great place for a chat in the beer garden.

Premiere – Ben O’Kane ‘Place I’ve Never Been’ Interview

by the partae November 3, 2022
written by the partae
Where are you currently based?

My hometown, West Wyalong in central NSW. But looking to move away next year just not sure where to just yet!

What was it like growing up in country NSW?

It’s funny, if you asked me this question 10 years ago I would say I couldn’t get to the city / coast quick enough.  But as I’ve gotten older and seen more of the world it’s made me appreciate how good it was to grow up in the country. What I look back on now is the mateship that you build in the small country town and no matter how far I go or how long I am away for my mates and those friendships back home have never changed. My last release ‘Aint It Funny How’ explores all of this, give it a listen!

How did you first start playing music?

I was 12 years old when I first picked up the guitar. I had a couple of mates who were a bit older than me start a band and thought they were the best thing ever. And I guess I wanted to be like them so I started playing by myself and started writing songs pretty much straight away in a little notebook which, I have still have today. Some of the lyrics are hilarious.

What’s been happening recently?

I’ve been busy, it’s been a massive year actually. Now footy has finished up I have been playing gigs most weekend in a few new places such as Albury/Wodonga. I’ve just started working on some new tracks so hopefully will be able to release new music sometime next year as well!

Your single ‘Place I’ve Never Been’ is out on November 4, what influenced the sound and songwriting?

This song is a combination of a lot of difference influences. I loved acoustic punk-rock songs as a teenager and the guitar / strings element in this track defiantly draw upon those sounds from Dashboard Confessional, Jimmy Eat World and Angels and Airways. But what I love about this song is the subtle electronic songs. These songs were all drawn from my more recent influences such as Allday. This is a sound /style I really want to explore further in the future.

But the track completely changed from what I originally had in mind for it. The song started as just an acoustic guitar played lying on my lap as a percussion/guitar fusion, similar to how Ziggy Alberts made a lot of his earlier stuff. But the track kept evolving however, the originally chords were kept and we decided to add the electronic elements instead of the percussion elements to give the song a bit of extra punch.

How did this single come about?

I never really intended this song to be on the EP actually. But when I showed my procedure my original idea, he loved the concept of it and immediately saw the potential direction we could take the track so the track evolved and came together really quickly. Lyrically, I had this idea in mind of exploring what it’s like to realize you are falling in love for the time and rather than fight it, letting yourself open up to it and becoming vulnerable with someone again.

Where and when did you record/produce/master and who did you work with?

Nearly a year ago to the day I took the 12 hour drive to Byron to record the EP with producer Billy Otto who produced the whole track. Talents Bryon local, Phoebe Neumann also features on the track with the female backing vocals. The track was mixed by Caleb M. Harris who is based in Nashville Tennesse in the States. And the song was mastered by Trent Dobson who is based in the UK – so it was a bit of a global effort!

How was it working with (Producer) Billy Otto?

Working with Billy was incredible. I had zero experience recording music before and Billy made the whole process so easy and so much fun. Some of my best memories will forever be making the demos in the his little house on the hill.

How did you approach the recording/production process?

As this was my first experience recording I didn’t know what to expect so I just went in with an open mind and didn’t want to get bogged down by what I thought they tracks should song like. I am so happy for this because the songs turned out even better than I had imagined. It did get a little tricky after I had to move back home after 3 weeks because of covid, but we made it work and it was just such an amazing experience overall.

Who was responsible for the Artwork and Creative for this project and how did the concepts come about?

Ashley Cooper, who is a member of the Holy Moly Artist and Gum Records family designed the artwork and creative for this track. The track is all set in the early hours of the morning and the cover reflects what a dawn looks like in the country with Australian native fauna looking like shadows.

Your debut EP is on the way, please tell us about the writing process and some idea of what we can expect:

It is my debut EP and it is called ‘Avem Haven’. I started the writing process by booking an isolated cabin in the hills of Kangaroo Valley in NSW. I literally just spent 4 days, from sunrise to sunset, by myself coming up with song concepts, playing with some sound ideas and writing lyrics. Looking back it was one of the most rewarding things I have ever done. The cabin I stayed in was called ‘Avem Haven’ and I named the EP after it because without that trip there would have been no EP to release!

What are you listening to at the moment?

At the moment I am trying to really focus on what sort of sounding artist I want to be. A big thing for me is making my live performances sound like the recorded tracks using my loop station. So I am currently listening to Felipe Baldomir, I love how he structures his songs using a loop station and how he uses open guitar tunings. I am also listening to Ziggy Alberts who is a massive inspiration of mine. I love his lyrics and cannot wait for his new album ‘Dancing In The Dark’ to be released. And lastly I am also listening to the Melbourne band ‘Slowly Slowly’. Again I love there conceptual lyrical writing and their overall sound. I saw them live the other week of or the first time and they were honestly the best live act I’ve ever seen.

What’s planned for the remainder of 2022 going into 2023?

This year, I have a few more shows planned in regional NSW. But next year I am planning my first every official tour to promote the release of my EP which I am super excited about. Expect shows to be down the south coast and in the major NSW cities such as Wagga Wagga, Canberra, Albury and Wollongong.

Favourite food and place to hangout?

I don’t know if I have one favourite food, anything cooked by mum never misses though. And being at home when all the family is home is always my favourite place to be!

Audio Obscura Sunrise at The Loft w/ Peggy Gou, Hunee for ADE 2022

by the partae November 3, 2022
written by the partae

Words: Domenico Frascino

Amsterdam Dance Event – which took place from October 19th to 23rd – is arguably the leading European music event and something you absolutely cannot miss every autumn. With over 300 music events happening in the city, we attended one of the most epic parties of the week: the Audio Obscura Sunrise at the infamous location The Loft.

Audio Obscura parties are widely renowned for their picturesque and charming locations. This Sunrise Session took place at The Loft, located on the top floor of the A’DAM Tower, one of the tallest landmarks in the city centre of the Dutch capital. The large glass windows allow for a breathtaking view of the city, enhanced even further by the early lights of dawn that created a magical scenery for a legendary dj-set.

Behind the decks, the power combo of Peggy Gou and Hunee entertained the intimate crowd with a whopping 7-hours musical journey that kickstarted the morning on the last day of ADE 2022 from 7-14h. The unusual mix of people, some coming from afterparties or one of the multiple ADE events happening on Saturday night, and some just about to start their day with house and disco for breakfast, contributed to an otherworldly vibe in the club.

Hunee started out with a carefully selected set of trippy morning magic music including several house classics tracks, perfectly fitting to an afterhour. This made the atmosphere quickly escalate and the temperature inside the Loft rise. It was enchanting to see the multicultural and international crowd getting together smiling and dancing to the hypnotic beats.

When Peggy Gou took the stage, the party went absolute bonkers. Her electro disco house selection set the dancefloor on fire, bringing the energy inside The Loft to a whole new level.

As usual, Audio Obscura did not disappoint and delivered one of the most memorable events of the packed ADE week.

To make you feel part of the party, we listed our top 5 tracks that Hunee and Peggy Gou blasted at the Audio Obscura Sunrise Session at the Loft:

  1. Off the Meds – Hiccups  (Roman Flugel Elektro House Mix)
  2. Peggy Gou – I Go (DJ Koze Remix)
  3. Satoshi Tomiie – Bassline
  4. Mim Souleiman – Poa
  5. Kassian – Aerial

Where are you currently based?

Rochester, NY

Please tell us about what’s been happening recently?

We just put out a brand new music video for our single “Planet Bitch,” which is the second single we’ve released from our upcoming EP, also titled Planet Bitch. 🙂 We’ve also been touring pretty extensively and have more dates coming up in the Northeast in November and December!

What influenced or inspired your latest single “Planet Bitch”

When I came up with the concept of “Planet Bitch” I just knew we needed to do a title track for it. So basically the concept led to the single and I knew I wanted to work with our long-time producer (Daniel Armbruster of Joywave) on it as well. We always have good chemistry on tongue-in-cheek tracks like this one.

How did you go about writing this single?

The concept led to the creation which isn’t something that always happens. We started with a track and I wrote a lot of the lyrics/melodys on my own, then we reconvened to edit everything down and record. That’s actually my preferred way to write as I like to have some time alone with a track instead of writing everything in-studio, though I’ve done it both ways.

Where and when did you record/produce/master and who did you work with?

The song was written and recorded in Rochester, NY at Daniel Armbruster’s studio (He also produced the track.) It was mixed by Nick Radovanovic and mastered by Joe Laporta.

How did you approach the recording process?

Because our catalog is pretty extensive, we’ve recorded a lot and record mostly the same way for every track. The song structure etc. need to be completed before other instruments or vocals are recorded for the most part, but many of the digital parts of the track will have been laid down prior to finishing writing, then once vocals and any real instruments being used are recorded, much more production polishing happens to actually complete the track. Then there are typically rounds of edits for mixing as well.

You made a VFX music video, how did this come about and how was it working with Josiah Moore?

All the credit goes to Josiah on the VFX! Josiah was incredibly easy to work with, I think our visions were aligned from the first call we had and the process of shooting only took one day. After that the heavy lifting was done by Josiah who created “Planet Bitch” and all of the visuals. I was so amazed when I saw the first edits- really just blown away. I hope new and old fans enjoy this as much as we do!

How did the concept for the music video come about?

I think for this it was only natural for us to want to create the actual planet we keep talking about in the music and show the audience a little barbarella fantasy moment. Because our live shows are choreographed, I knew I wanted that to be a part of things too!

What does this music video mean to you?

It’s one of our most visually flashy videos but also a video that is just supposed to be a snapshot in time of “Planet Bitch,” so it’s less like our other videos, many of which have more of a concept to figure out. This one is more performative and different for us while still showing glimpses of humor through the alien queen character, boob guns, etc. 😉

How did COVID affect your music and writing process?

Hugely. It was a dark time for my music career and pretty uninspiring as live performance is probably my favorite part of musicianship as a whole and that was no longer an option (besides performing to a phone.) I also was a lot less physical because we could no longer rehearse and be in a room with one another so I felt a sense of really losing multiple pieces of myself. The music I am putting out now has been done for quite a while but not being able to see an audience receive it made me not want to release it until this cooled down. Ultimately there were pros and cons to this but playing live now, I’m glad I waited to release!

Please tell us about your upcoming EP and how it differs from your last EP Kopyright
I think there are moments on this album that are similar to Kopyright in that it’s “all killer no filler” and really energetic throughout, but I also think it differs in that there are moments on this one that are really meaningful to me personally and show different elements of musicianship than prior projects have. I think this is the most “funk” driven and vocally popping project we’ve released in a while, which is cool for me as a singer.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

I am finding myself revisiting the Genesis/Phil Collins discography lately, lol…I’ve also just been having a straight up mainstream moment listening to Beyoncé and Taylor Swift’s new albums but I have to say that listening to those artists as well as less radio friendly stuff has really taught me how to be a dynamic writer in a lot of ways since our music does have major pop underpinnings while also mixing in several genres. I look at each music consumption experience as a way to learn more.

What do you like to do away from music?

As an extension of music: working out and dance are definitely important for me mentally and physically, especially because of how physically demanding our shows are! Psychology is what I went to school for, so what makes people tick is really interesting to me and I do a lot of reading about that in my spare time. I’m also pretty into various holistic health topics and am always trying new stuff with that. At home, I live in a historic house, so there’s no shortage of projects there to focus on and restoration is very rewarding for me. Lastly, I don’t like to be in one place for too long so I travel between coasts frequently and make being near water a big priority.

What’s planned for the remainder of 2022 going into 2023?

Our next single “There’s No Such Thing As Love” comes out November 11, and the entire Planet Bitch EP is out November 18th! We have upcoming live dates in November and December as well, which can be found on our website at koppsmusic.com !!

Mike Barret and Phil Swan announce new project Awkward Branches with debut single ‘A Frame (Not a Window)’ out today via Tip Top Recordings

by the partae November 3, 2022
written by the partae

Awkward Branches is the new project of singer, keyboardist and former Fiction frontman Mike Barrett and close collaborator and guitarist Phil Swan. Today they share their debut single ‘A Frame (Not a Window)’ via Tip Top Recordings.

After writing and performing with each-other in numerous other projects – including a 6-piece experimental collective (Holy Island Sketchbook), gothic trio (Sweet Heave) and as part of Mike’s dream-pop project (Brand New Moon) – they felt it was finally time to put a name to their own project, and thus Awkward Branches was born.

Appropriately, the pair first met standing under a much-beloved tree in the gardens of an old wedding chapel where they both worked. While waiting for ceremonies to run their course, talk would often turn to music. United by a shared appreciation for ambient soundscapes and buoyant melodies, they tentatively began recording sketches; ideas which grew over several years, without hurry, into a handful of fully formed songs.

‘A Frame (Not a Window)’ is the first single to be shared from forthcoming debut EP due out next spring. The debut single is a tranquil sun-flecked number, driven by bouncy acoustic guitar and verdant synth, with tender vocals that speak to the nature of trust, faith and dogs. The song is complemented by a charming animated video, created by Mike Barrett, that satisfyingly mirrors the colourful textures and sanguine spirit of the song itself. Barrett on the video: “The video began life as a simple zoom through abstract spaces, inspired by a craft-paper collage Phil had made as a potential EP cover. Using a blend of hand-drawn elements, original footage and AI-assisted animation techniques, it soon evolved into a somewhat labyrinthine journey across a variety of fantasy landscapes, culminating In the slightly tongue-in-cheek / slightly deadly serious ascension to heaven for the final scene. Mostly it was a chance to indulge my affection for kitsch architectural forms, potted plants, and – in a nod to the first line of the song’s lyrics – the illusive joy of dogs”.

VOB Celebrate Women Who Are Breaking Stereotypes

by the partae November 3, 2022
written by the partae
Stream ‘PMS’

After a phenomenal debut at Wacken Open Air 2022 in July and stirring up a buzz with their “School  Revolution Remix” EP that featured six electronic music DJs and producers in September, Voice Of  Baceprot (VOB) are back with their brand-new single “PMS”.

Short for “Perempuan Merdeka Seutuhnya” or “Wholly Independent Woman” in Bahasa Indonesia,  “PMS” was actually written by Marsya (vocals, guitar), Widi (bass), and Sitti (drums) during their high school days in around 2017 together with their counselling teacher and mentor Abah Erza.

“We wrote the song fuelled by the remaining energy that we had left after school. At the time, we were up to our necks with school activities, so we basically had to drag ourselves to the studio for workshops,” remembers Marsya.

In spite of the conditions that they were in, there were no traces of fatigue in the song that they produced. In fact, “PMS” reveals the band’s antipathy, displeasure, and anger that they held towards their situation at the time, both lyrically and musically.

The main inspiration behind the lyrics to “PMS” came from a series of short stories written by  Indonesian author Feby Indirani titled “Bukan Perawan Maria” (Eng; “Not Virgin Mary”), focusing on VOB’s protestations against discriminative and judgmental behaviours that tend to be aimed towards women who hold a different mindset, perspective, attitude, and even wishes or dreams compared to the norm.

Coming from a region where social norms are heavily influenced by not only religious but also patriarchal values, VOB have had their fair share of gender-based discrimination in the past. The absence of life choices post-high school for many girls besides marriage would be one of them. The same also goes for career choices, which was limited for VOB and their friends due to gender discrimination.

“Ironically, it’s not just the men who would display such behaviours, but also our fellow women too!”  Marsya remarks.

Despite being written several years ago, the lyrics to “PMS” remain contextual and relevant to the current situation, not only back in their hometown but also in many parts of Indonesia and even the world at large. The reality is women are still restrained by patriarchal stereotypes, especially when it comes to career and other life choices.

Hence, it comes as no surprise when they roar:

“Meski tak seperawan Maria
Aku bukan budak busuk otakmu
Meski tak seperawan Maria
Akulah merdeka merdekalah seutuhnya!”

(In English:  “Though not as virgin as Mary
I’m not your brain rotten slave
Even though she’s not as virgin as Mary
I am free, completely free!”)

There were not many changes made to the song in terms of its musical arrangement from its original form. Producer Yuka Dian Narendra (GRIBS, Anda Perdana, Bonita) lent his Midas touch to “PMS” by sprucing up its flow and sorting out the strongest parts of the song from the demo. He also selected the right sound for each instrument.

Vocal director Irvan “IrvNat” Natadiningrat (Tiga Diva, Krisdayanti, Indonesian Idol, X-Factor) also played a major part in the vocals department by asking Marsya, Widi, and Sitti to explore the kind of notes and melodies that they have never sung before: uplifting, bright, and fun, akin to anime theme songs.

“We definitely had our doubts in the beginning because it never occurred to us how a protest song could have vocal melodies of a sunnier disposition. However, once we tried it out and had a listen, we ended up loving the end results. It felt like there was another side to VOB that has never been unveiled before until now, with this approach. A fun side, yet still very much VOB,” explains Marsya.

Just like “[NOT] PUBLIC PROPERTY” – their previous single, “PMS” was mixed by Danish producer and sound engineer Tue Madsen, whose portfolio reads like a who’s who of heavy music with Meshuggah,  Suicide Silence, Mnemic, and Sick Of It All amongst his former clients. While the mastering itself was done by Howie Weinberg, an American audio mastering-engineer who is responsible for over 2,000  mastering credits, including 200+ certified Gold and Platinum albums by the RIAA, 20 Grammy  Awards and several other honours. Howie was also credited as the master engineer for Nirvana’s  “Nevermind” and Beastie Boys’ “Licensed To Ill.”

“PMS”, a bold shout out to all women who are breaking stereotypes by taking on male-dominated jobs, is available on all digital streaming platforms starting from November 3, 2022.

Sunk Loto Final Shows For 2022 Kick Off Later This Month, Limited Tickets Available For 2nd Melbourne Show

by the partae November 2, 2022

“You wouldn’t know they had just been on a 15 year hiatus…it seemed like they hadn’t missed a day. Their performance was stellar, and the crowd agreed. Crowd surfing, moshpits, horns in the air – the punters were having the time of their lives” – Wall Of Sound

“This was not just a nostalgic experience, this was better than ever. The Sunk Loto that strode confidently on to this stage, though the same humans, was a whole new beast” – Kill Your Stereo

“…the band sounding only better than they had 15 years ago, this is nostalgia heaven and everything feels right again…they’re tighter than ever, they sound bigger than ever” – Everblack Media

“Tonight’s set is twenty songs long, covering two LPs and their legendary debut EP…this is far more than a greatest hits affair. Deep cuts abound, and the crowd is loving it” – Sense Music Media

“With an explosion of energy and methodical precision that belie the fact that there had even been a 15 year hiatus as a band. Same band? Yes. Same Music?  Yes. Same performance? Not a chance! There was something fresh and exciting, like hearing it all again for the time but a more precise and mature version of those songs from long ago” – Metal-Roos
“A night fifteen years in the making for some…to say this was probably one of the most anticipated gigs for a Brisbane act in 2022 is a massive understatement” – The Live Wire
While 2022 has had its fair share of surprises, none have been more resoundingly celebrated than the announcement earlier this year that Australian metal pioneers Sunk Loto were officially returning to stages after a 15 year absence.

Selling out multiple Queensland shows within 24 hours of announcing their return, Sunk Loto swiftly went on to sell out additional 2022 shows, with a second Brisbane date and previously announced shows in Melbourne and Sydney rapidly reaching capacity. But if you missed out on snagging a chance to catch the prolific quartet back and bigger than ever live in action, a handful of tickets still remain for the second Melbourne show at Max Watt’s on Thursday 24 November. With unanimous praise from critics and fans alike so far for these explosive and in-depth shows, absence has indeed made the heart and the band’s ferocity grow fonder, and these final 2022 Sunk Loto shows are not to be missed.

If you had to list the most important heavy Australian albums of all time, it’s likely that Sunk Loto’s 2003 release Between Birth and Death would be near the top, and metal aficionados still consider the band as one of the most influential home-grown bands of the early 2000s.

Signed to Sony in 1999 when the average age of the band members was 16, Sunk Loto released an EP and two albums over their 10-year history. They toured the world with bands like Korn, Linkin Park, Suicidal Tendencies, Perfect Circle, Deftones, Sevendust and staked their claim as an epic live band at festivals such as Big Day Out, Homebake, Vans Warped Tour, Splendour in The Grass, and Falls.

Now, after 15 years apart, Sunk Loto have returned to the stage, with multiple sold out shows in Queensland earlier this year, and three shows remaining this November. The shows feature all four original members, Jason Brown, Dane Brown, Luke McDonald and Sean Van Gennip, who have come together to reconnect with their fans, entertain, have fun, and reignite their love of playing music.

After “five years of silence” (times 3) in a live setting, definitely don’t miss the final chance to catch Sunk Loto back at it in 2022 – snag your ticket today to one of the biggest shows of the year!
