Mike Colin – Eclecticore: Creativity, Collaboration, and Healing

by the partae January 31, 2025
written by the partae

You’ve collaborated with an incredible lineup of legendary MCs on your upcoming record. How did these collaborations come together, and what was the creative process like?

I have to thank the producers I’ve been working with since around 2020. Wyshmaster, Anno Domini, Legion, and Temper made these “colabos” possible for me and other indie rapper types. And of course, I thank the rappers involved for lending their voices for the purpose of helping myself and others gain some attention. Unfortunately, I have never met any of these guys, but the chance to show that I can hang with them on a track is monumental and just plain fun at the same time. It’s my dream mixtape.

With so many different personas—Mile High Mike Colin, Milky Way Mike Colin, Zhitkur Roswell—how do you decide which alias to use for a specific project?

Ever since the get-go, I was Eclecticore. I grew up in the ‘70s and ‘80s listening to the rock I loved and still love: The Beatles, The Stones, Jimi, Bowie, Iggy, Lou, Prince. I also loved Hip Hop—Run DMC, Beastie Boys, Public Enemy. I even loved solo classical for some reason. I used to put it all under one label, “Phantasmorgasm,” which was my band in the ‘90s, but as time went on, I splintered.

Mike Colin is a rock singer/songwriter.
Mile High Mike Colin is a rapper/lead guitarist.
Milky Way Mike Colin is a composer/multi-instrumentalist.
Zhitkur Roswell is a beat producer.
Where to use each alias is sort of built into the alias itself.

Your output is prolific, often compared to music legends like Prince and Zappa. What drives your relentless creativity, and how do you keep the ideas flowing?

Well first off, I’m nowhere close to being in league with Prince or Zappa or any of those guys who are true artistic geniuses. I have a knack—a knack for putting music into a song/record format. I’m not a virtuoso musician. I’m not a talented vocalist. I just have a knack for expressing myself honestly and exploring song ideas that others don’t.

Ideas are no problem. They can start with a beat, a riff, a vocal. If your goal isn’t limited to commercial appeal, then you can just create. I throw music at the canvas like Pollock, I celebrate the ordinary like Warhol, and sometimes I obsess over a grid of details like Da Vinci. Music itself is the genius. I’m just lucky enough to be able to do it.

The trauma you’ve experienced is heartbreaking yet inspiring. How has it shaped your music and your approach to life?

I have been through a lot, just like a lot of people. Life is both beautiful and horrific. I think we are all left wondering what the purpose of pain is, and the finality of death on our plane.

In 2024, my dog of 10 years died, and it just about killed me. I just want to see him again. I haven’t seen my mother or her parents in almost 30 years because they all passed. I finally found out who my father was thanks to DNA. He died before I could meet him.

This is what we all carry with us in one form or another. This is what art is. It’s all of it, all at once. Entertainment is art that distracts us from our pain. I wish I was an entertainer.

You’re known for your love of recording over performing live. What is it about the studio environment that resonates so deeply with you?

I love the studio because any and every song is a go to explore. In the ‘90s, I toured and performed 500-plus shows, and what you learn is that the audience only wants to hear a small segment of material. The repetition drove me crazy. The 375th time you play the same 15 songs, it becomes a job.

Also, I’m just not an entertainer. I’m trying to relate.

Producers like Wyshmaster, Anno Domini, Legion, and Temper have played a big role in your projects. What do these collaborations bring to your sound?

Working with producers has kept me going. I love getting the tracks and just going for it. It’s collaborating in a manner that I understand.

Your new record features a mix of hip-hop heavyweights like Eminem, Method Man, and KRS-One. What makes this project stand out from your previous work?

This album is just different than anything I’ve done because I’ve never done anything so accessible or commercial. I hope this opens the door and allows the audience to discover some of my other music.

You’ve dabbled in so many genres and styles, from hip-hop to acoustic to beatstrumentals. What draws you to explore such diverse musical paths?

I love music. I have dabbled in most genres, just like The Beatles or Prince. Time has proven that Rock/Hip Hop/Classical is what I do. The dabbling is over.

Except—I am making a K-pop record just to be hip.

Vinyl and cassette releases are scheduled for April. What inspired you to embrace these classic formats, and how do they complement your music?

I’ve been around long enough that the first recordings I released were on vinyl and cassette. They’re fun. Nostalgic.

That said, digital access is pretty great. I love Spotify and Apple Music. I have every record I have ever wanted at my fingertips. It’s incredible.

Despite everything you’ve endured, you’ve remained focused on creating music. What advice would you give to artists facing their own struggles, both personal and professional?

Don’t let depression keep you from making your music. It is hard. Believe me, I know.

Sadly, don’t bring your sorrow to the biz. Nobody gives a shit. If you expect them to, then you are in for a rude awakening and a lot of wasted time.

There is music the art, and there is music the business. Make music because you want to, not because you think you could be the next Guaplord or Smoked Cheddar the Ass Getter.

Even so, you must promote your art once in a while. I’ve been writing and recording for 30 years. I never “made it,” yet I have fans in 81 countries.

Maybe someday I will get to perform for them. Life’s a continuous, contiguous journey that isn’t over until it’s over.

Meadow 10 – The End Of A Local Era

Guitar Wolf (JP), Pureblast and ‘The Retreat Creek Hotel’ local artists join
Hiatus Kaiyote, Pond, MJ Lenderman & The Wind, Empress Of, Kaiit and more for the final Meadow Festival!

Location – Bambra

Dates – March 21-23, 2025

Forever champions of the local magic coming from the Surf Coast and Otway Hinterlands, the Meadow team are continuing to do just that as they announce the winners of the local band competition that will join their 2025 line-up featuring Hiatus Kaiyote, Pond, MJ Lenderman & The Wind, Empress Of, Kaiit, Floodlights, and more for their last festival. Gearing up to enjoy one final weekend EVER in the Bambra Bowl on Gulidjan, Gadubanud and Wadawurrung land, the selected local artists promise auditory delights from across Victoria’s regional South-West, alongside new mainstage additions including Guitar Wolf, Pureblast (Fka Baraka), Twine,  Mika James, Follow The Robin and James Range Band.

Throwing the doors open to the Retreat Creek Hotel, a dusty front bar filled with surprises, this year of Meadow provides new performance opportunities for regional acts that are often few and far between outside the city. Named after the waterway that winds through the valley below the event, the stage will see performances from local acts Boggle, Daisy Kilbourne, De Porsal, Jerry, Lina, Norwood, Robbie Divine, and Solar Wax, with Think About You winning a main stage slot.

Think About You

“Reimagining the iconic acoustic guitar set featured in all good country watering holes on a Friday night, we’ve selected a stack of local talent including Geelong songstress “Daisy Kilbourne”, Surf Coast krautrock punks “De Porsal” and avant-garde sax driven instrumental trio “Boggle” representing Apollo Bay. We’re beyond buzzing to showcase our region and are incredibly proud of the calibre of artists we’re able to present.” – Cameron Wade, Meadow Co-Founder

The new Meadow additions don’t stop there, with Japanese garage rock trio Guitar Wolf joining the lineup, alongside French DJ and live duo Pureblast (fka Baraka), South Australian noise rock project Twine, The Vovos’ Mika James, songwriter Follow The Robin, and James Range Band; the next generation of rich talent coming out of the Central Australian desert, made up of family members from the proud Pitjantjatjara community of Utju.

Upholding their legacy of love for all things local and creating an experience for all the senses, Meadow is set to host a selection of food vendors from the surrounding areas. Enjoy hand-stretched woodfired pizza from Airey’s Inlet’s Pete’s Pizza, or Torquay’s burger favourites ‘Gypsy Burger’ and locally inspired Mexican ‘Perla Taco’s, while Melbourne and Surf Coast coffee van Tin Can Alley Cafe will be around all weekend for your early morning (or late) coffee fix.

Every vehicle attending the festival will require a car pass. All proceeds support replanting native trees and shrubs across the festival site and surrounding areas (via East Otway Landcare). Hundreds of baby trees from past plantings will be starting to mature by the time punters arrive in Autumn!

The “Bambra Express” bus passes are available for the 2025 event. A $62 + BF return pass will get you from Melbourne Southern Cross Station to Bambra and back again.

General Release tickets are now on sale for $298+ BF, teenagers accompanied by adults can join the festivities but require a full ticket, while children under 12 enter for free.

Whether you’re getting your blanket ready to park on the hill and enjoy the serene sundown, or packing your dancing shoes one final time, don’t miss the opportunity to experience this last all-mighty party in the Bambra Hills.

Hannes Bieger’s Breathtaking New Album Galaxies Lands Soon

by the partae January 29, 2025
written by the partae

German maestro Hannes Bieger, known for his technical precision and creative depth, is set to launch his upcoming album Galaxies—a profound exploration of existence, consciousness, and our shared bond as humans. Rooted in themes of love and universal connection, the album promises to be a defining chapter in Bieger’s journey as both an artist and producer.

The latest single, ‘Stardust,’ is a dazzling preview of what’s to come. Featuring the ethereal vocals of Icelandic singer FEY, the track marks a long-awaited collaboration for Hannes, whose admiration for her artistry has been evident since spotlighting her song Volta (with Tripolism) on his Balance Series mix. With Stardust, their creative synergy is fully realized, delivering an emotionally charged anthem that speaks to the chemistry of love and the magic of human connection.

From the opening moments, Stardust sweeps listeners off their feet with a bouncy bassline and mesmerizing motifs that immediately draw you in. Bieger’s signature production style—a progressive evolution of melodies and textures—creates an ever-shifting sonic landscape. FEY’s delicate yet powerful vocals emerge gracefully, weaving seamlessly into the instrumental and heightening the track’s emotional intensity.

The song’s crescendo arrives with a tension-filled breakdown that gives way to a stunning release of energy, as FEY’s lyrics—“Moments pass like fireworks between your heart and my heart”—capture the essence of love with poetic simplicity. It’s a heartfelt expression that perfectly aligns with the overarching themes of the album.

Stardust radiates optimism and joy, its playful melodic layers and uplifting energy creating an atmosphere of pure positivity. FEY’s voice acts as the emotional anchor, adding a deeply human touch to Bieger’s celestial soundscape. The result is a harmonious blend of artistry that feels both transcendent and grounded—a dream fulfilled for Bieger and an unforgettable experience for anyone who listens.

With Stardust, Hannes Bieger continues to cement his reputation as a boundary-pushing artist whose music resonates on both an emotional and cosmic level. If this track is any indication, Galaxies is set to be a landmark release that reminds us all of the power of connection, creativity, and love.

written by the partae

The rise of downtempo and organic house has brought a wave of boundary-pushing artists like Acid Pauli, Nicola Cruz, and Sabo to the forefront of electronic music, reshaping dancefloors and playlists alike. Adding their names to this esteemed lineup, Ben & Vincent unveil their latest creation, Zoa EP—an eight-track odyssey of cinematic grandeur, organic textures, and forward-thinking production. Released on Wayu Records, the EP draws inspiration from William Blake’s mythical Zoas, exploring the depths of reason, passion, instinct, and creativity through both original tracks and transformative remixes.

The journey begins with Emily’s Prelude, a breathtaking collaboration with composer Will Hyde, known for his orchestral work with Disney and Hans Zimmer. This cinematic opener sets the stage with symphonic elegance and subtle electronic undertones. The title track, Zoa, follows with raw, untamed energy, driven by jungle-inspired rhythms and pulsating passion. makeke’s remix elevates this primal essence, transforming it into a hypnotic club anthem.

With Rintrah, Ben & Vincent team up with Magupi to weave a mystical narrative, blending organic soundscapes and haunting melodies. Ohxala’s remix takes this deeper, reimagining the track as a meditative exploration of ambient and tribal textures. The EP’s finale, Flying Circus, brings playful sophistication to the table, with Akira Arasawa and Timboletti offering two striking remixes that transition from dancefloor energy to a lush, immersive organic house journey.

Zoa EP is more than a release; it’s a statement. Ben & Vincent masterfully craft a sonic experience that bridges storytelling, emotion, and innovation, marking them as rising stars in the downtempo scene. Available now on all major platforms, this is a must-hear for fans of electronic music’s most evocative sounds.

Mile High Mike Colin releases “Feature Presentations”

by the partae January 25, 2025
written by the partae

16 legendary MC’s join Mike on this Hip Hop record making it a fun and crazy listen. Thanks to Producers Wyshmaster, Anno Domini, Legion, and Temper we get

Eminem, Snoop Dogg, Method Man, Cappadonna, B-Real, Ice-T, KRS-One, Ceelo Green, Rick Ross, Yukmouth, Rah Digga, Pacewon, Dizzy Wright, Rittz, Benny the Butcher and Lenny Cooper. Available to stream Jan 31st on Spotify, Apple Music, & YouTube Music,

Limited edition Vinyl and Cassette versions are scheduled to drop in April.

“Mike just makes music all the time. He doesn’t really have any hobbies.

He raised 4 kids, worked as a Recording Engineer, Event DJ and Substitute Teacher.

Other than that he is writing and recording, or maybe vacationing. I think this is why he doesn’t perform that much, because he is almost always working on something new. His wife gave him a beautiful 12-string guitar and he’s got a great acoustic set he plays everyday right now and I think he would like to get out there but the live show doesn’t drive him. He lives and loves to record. As Mile High Mike Colin he loves to collaborate with other producers like Wyshmaster, Temper, Anno Domini and Legion. It gives him a chance to just be a vocalist/lyricist, which is nothing but fun for him. As Milky Way Mike Colin he explores his instrumental side. As Mike Colin he rocks and rolls. As Zhitkur Roswell he makes beatstrumentals. It really is ridiculous how much output Mike has had. I mean only the likes of McCartney, Prince, Frank Black, Buckethead, Zappa, The Residents, and The Rolling Stones have made more music. When I think of all the trauma he’s endured in his life, both physical and mental. Abandoned by his dad, brutal gang beatings, false accusations, attempted shootings, hit by a car, his mother an unsolved murder, drug addiction, betrayed by friends in the music industry, He’s had a stroke. He broke his back. He was born blind in one eye , he is practically blind in his good eye. He lives his life and he makes music. He does not act, does not model, does not hang out at bars, does not play video games. He makes music. When I ask him he says ‘If something is fun and you’re good at it, and it makes you feel alive, wouldn’t you do it all the time too?'”

Celebrating 30 Years“ is the motto for the next edition of Germany’s most  traditional open-air festival

From July 31 to August 3, 2025, a very special chapter in the festival’s history will be  written at the former Pydna missile base: NATURE ONE is celebrating its 30th anniversary  with the motto “Celebrating 30 Years”. In keeping with the 30th anniversary, the festival is  supporting the Reiner Meutsch Foundation “FLY & HELP” with the construction of a  school in Rwanda.

Since 1995, the festival has stood for basic values such as freedom, tolerance and togetherness  and has been committed to charitable projects at home and abroad for over 15 years. In  cooperation with Viva con Agua de Sankt Pauli e.V., various well projects have already been  realized in Uganda. For the 30th anniversary of the festival, another important step is now being  taken: the construction of a school in Rwanda in cooperation with the aid organization FLY &

HELP.

The targeted donation target of EUR 50,000 for the construction of the school with three  classrooms, cistern and toilets was recently reached. The school building is now due to be  completed in May.

“We are incredibly proud that the NATURE ONE community has supported us so extensively  with donations for this project and that we can complete the construction of the school before our  30th anniversary,” says Oliver Vordemvenne from I-Motion.

NATURE ONE began in August 1995, when the first open-air rave took place at Hahn Airport  with 13,000 enthusiastic dancers. In the years that followed, the number of visitors increased  continuously and the festival quickly developed into one of the largest and most famous of its  kind in Germany. The Pydna festival location in Kastellaun now includes a campsite the size of  more than 50 football fields. Over 350 international DJs play on 22 floors and create a boundless  sense of community.

NATURE ONE – organizer I-Motion is a wholly owned subsidiary of DEAG Deutsche  Entertainment AG. The exclusive ticket partner is myticket.de.

SHAME ANNOUNCE AUSTRALIA HEADLINE DATES

by the partae January 22, 2025
written by the partae

UK post-punk five piece Shame have announced headline dates of Australia and New Zealand. The band will step in to replace Wunderhorse in support of Fontaines D.C. on their forthcoming tour as well as headline performances in Sydney, Melbourne and Wellington.

Originally hailed by The Guardian as “2018’s angriest, shoutiest young British guitar band” Shame’s most recent release Food for Worms is  a sonic departure from anything they’ve done before. It careened and crashed into life faster than anything the band had created previously: a weapon-grade cocktail that captured all the gristle and fragility that earned them their merits.

Produced by Flood (U2, PJ Harvey, Nick Cave) the album sees shame abandon their post-punk beginnings for far more eclectic influences, drawing from the tense atmospherics of Merchandise, the sharp yet uncomplicated lyrical observations of Lou Reed and the more melodic works of 90s German band, Blumfeld.

New Sounds Magazine reflected recently that Shame has “risen their heads above the parapet of post-punk pyrotechnics,” with their live shows evolving from “entertaining to unmissable.” Let that serve as a warning.

Ticket Presale: Thu 23rd Jan at 11am local
General sale: Fri 24th Jan at 11am local
