Montell Fish Wows Melbourne with Raw, Emotional Performance

by the partae June 5, 2024
written by the partae

Pittsburgh lad Montell Fish landed in Melbourne on Friday for the VIC stint of his AUS/NZ Intercession Before Charlotte tour. From the jump, Fish’s performance oozed with raw emotion and vulnerability – the bloke was decked out in moody strobes and a mask, nodding to his alter-ego dj gummy bear, under which he drops tracks too. Throughout the gig, Fish’s pipes were nothing short of ace, each tune packed with powerful yet breathtaking falsetto.

Standout moments were “I Know I Failed You” and “Destroy Me Just for You,” leaving the crowd absolutely stoked. The vibe was electric, with punters cheering and singing along, clearly mesmerised by Fish’s talent and stage presence. The whole night was an absolute ripper, showcasing why Fish is such a standout artist in today’s music scene.

ALOE BLACC INTRODUCES AUSTRALIAN RECORDING ARTIST

ANGEL xo

HER DEBUT SINGLE ‘CROSS THE LINE’ IS OUT NOW

Melbourne’s R&B songstress, 19-year-old ANGEL xo,  has released her debut single, “Cross the Line” on Aloe Blacc’s independent record label, Grand Scheme.

Teaming up with LA management and production company, helmed by hit maker and Grammy nominee Aloe Blacc and Lani Richmond, the young Australian artist is ready to unleash her music on the global stage.

“Finding ANGEL was like stumbling upon a rare find in the music scene. At such a young age, her song writing was effortless and authentic, and she exceeded my expectations vocally. Her talent is undeniable, I’m eager to collaborate with her further and witness her soar to new heights.” Said, Aloe Blacc.

The Alt-R&B, pop track ‘Cross the Line’ showcases ANGEL’s distinct style and sound, blending soulful melodies and a commanding range of vocals, embraced in the craft of song writing. Adding to her artistic repertoire, ANGEL partnered with Gemma Navarrete and in demand producer, Chelsea Warner on her first offering.

ANGEL xo says, “Cross the Line is about young love, the pain and the thrill and eventually having enough of that drama, so you develop boundaries to stop the endless cycle of being stepped on. This is exactly what I was going through when writing this song. The highs and lows of love can make you blind to what you truly deserve.”

The Melbourne based artist first discovered her love for music from a young age in a family deeply involved in the music industry. During her high school years, she pursued formal training in singing, balancing exams with her musical aspirations whilst performing live at local venues, and at private and corporate events.

ANGEL’s recent back-to-back trips to Los Angeles in 2023 marked significant milestones, securing a coveted TV sync opportunity for the Hulu series “Living with The Dead“, and teaming up with LA management and production company, helmed by hit maker and Grammy nominee Aloe Blacc and Lani Richmond.

ANGEL xo is an artist to watch, with collaborations with songwriters and producers such as Stephen Puth, Pam Sheyne (Genie In A Bottle), Aloe Blacc, and Jugglerz ANGEL will continue to deliver new music throughout 2024.

‘Cross the Line’ is available now across all streaming platforms.

Penny Shades To Release Their New EP “EP 2” on June 7

Penny Shades, hailing from Nelson BC, is a vibrant neo/alt soul quartet ensemble renowned for their original music. Characterized by mesmerizing 3-part harmonies, electrifying lead vocals, and contemporary grooves infused with a touch of psychedelic allure.
Sometimes it’s the most devastating moments that force you to consider who you are, where you stand, and where you need to go in order to stay true. For Penny Shades frontwoman Sarah Orton, the pivotal moment was the freak-accident Nelson Flood that drowned the basement music studio that she, her partner, and four other bands shared under five hundred gallons of water.
“Hardlines was written when the band was going through changes, which probably opened us to trying out new ideas, so we started experimenting with new sounds and approaches in our jam sessions. It still sounded like Penny Shades, but it was something different; I’m glad we rolled with it. “ – Ness Benamran (Drums/Vocals)

The band launched with their debut FACTOR-funded EP during the pandemic and have already found themselves sharing major stages, including Nelson’s International Mural Festival and the Kaslo Jazz Etc. Festival. Their latest single ‘Way Back’ marked their CBC radio debut with plays across multiple programs and was featured by Exclaim! on both their Best New Canadian Music Spotify playlist and Show & Tell column.

Led by vocalist Sarah Orton, alongside guitarist Jesse Lee, keys/synth Jeremy Sauer, and drummer Ness Benamran, the group is gearing up for a Creative BC-supported second EP release in June 2024.

JOINED BY HIGH VIS (UK), PAIN OF TRUTH (USA), FUSE (SG) + SPECIAL GUESTS TO BE ANNOUNCED

Rolling Stone

“Unapologetically showcase the power of resilience and community”
FBi Radio

“SPEED has, in their brief time, managed to usher in a group of people to this world who may not have previously had any interest in hardcore whatsoever – rare”
Acclaim Magazine

“They’re not taking the spotlight lightly”
NME Magazine

“Their sound and approach is deeply rooted in a rich, and often overlooked subculture. The band’s enthusiasm is high, and their mission is clear – they want you along for the ride”

After a relentless touring schedule that has taken them across the world, hardcore staples SPEED are coming home for an Australian tour in celebration of their debut album ONLY ONE MODE, out July 12 via Last Ride Records / Flatspot Records. Tickets go on-sale this Thursday, June 6 at 9am local time – TICKET DETAILS VIA THIS LINK FROM THURSDAY + PRE-ORDER THE LP HERE.

ONLY ONE MODE, a phrase coined by the group, encapsulates the band’s overarching ethos: Hardcore, played hard, played fast, “for us, by us”—explicit, immediate, definitive—hinting at all the crucial bands that have come before them. Having grown exponentially since first forming in 2019, SPEED have only doubled down on their values, doing what they do for the love of their friends, family and the culture of Australian hardcore as exemplified in lead single ‘REAL LIFE LOVE’.

Last week, SPEED dropped another preview of the album with ‘THE FIRST TEST’, a dynamic, groove-driven number with lyrics that speak on striking out alone and growing in a world that’s both beautiful and ugly. Always ones to do things on their own terms, the accompanying music video was produced by SPEED together with long-time collaborators Jack Rudder and Thomas Elliot.

With their debut album locked and loaded for July, SPEED are continuing to draw global attention with their sweeping tour schedule. As the band wrap up their six-week North American tour supporting Knocked Loose, Show Me The Body, and Loathe this weekend, they’ll waste no time getting their UK/EU tour underway, playing headline shows and festival slots throughout June before making their way back over to the US in July.

Come August, SPEED will make their welcome return home as they put on some of the biggest hardcore shows ever seen in Australia; playing album cuts for the first time ever, plus all of the heaviest favourites from their catalogue. Making the tour a truly global affair, SPEED will be joined by High Vis (UK), Pain of Truth (USA) and Fuse (Singapore), plus local special guests to be announced.
