American-Taiwanese Artist JVNA announces Her 2nd Studio Album – “Play With You,” Releases Empowering Namesake Single

by the partae August 6, 2023
written by the partae

Artist: JVNA
Title: Play With You
Label: Self-release

Download / Stream

Multi-talented artist JVNA returns with her new track “Play With You,” a female empowerment-themed gem that also serves as the leading single from her forthcoming studio album. Listeners familiar with her previous body of work – “Hope In Chaos” will immediately recognize a transformation in JVNA‘s sonic style. While the former was deeply emotional and vulnerable, “Play With You” single sends a message that JVNA is here to take over control. Featuring her sultry vocals – impressively ranging from spoken word rap to breathy singing – along with melodic basslines and heavy-hitting, serrating synths during the drop, the track positions JVNA nearer to a villain than the melancholic damsel of her past. After pairing the track with its accompanying music video, we’d venture to say the rest of the album will also have strong influences from alt-pop, J-pop, K-pop, anime, gaming, and trance to continue the villainess storyline.

“Visually, I pictured this song being about a cunning anime demon girl in a video game seducing her enemies and killing them at the end. But this song’s message is really about being in charge of your own fate and winning the game of life itself throughout its challenges. Sort of like you’re the game master behind everything pulling the strings. I often face a lot of issues, and I feel like it’s constantly a boys club. I talk about overthrowing the patriarchy in this song with the lyrics – ‘the boys think that I’m here for company, but I’m conducting all the symphonies. I’m the final boss that’s gonna tear them down‘” – JVNA about “Play With You” single

California-based singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist JVNA produces electronic music that plays at the dichotomy of light and dark, bass and melody, organic and synthetic. Raised by Taiwanese immigrants, JVNA studied classical piano from the age of 6 and started writing songs when she was 11. Her studies continued at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, where she learned to score films and video games. Initially, JVNA made fun edits and remixes of her favorite anime and video game soundtracks; her take on MapleStory‘s “Login Theme” caught fire on the internet, earning half a million views in 24 hours. Her 2018 song “I’m With You,” inspired by her father’s death two years earlier, dared to dive deep into an emotional world. JVNA self-directed the song’s music video. The Follow-up single “Catch Me,” released in 2019, took JVNA on a sold-out tour across the United States. Due to the pandemic, it was canceled, and JVNA returned to the studio to focus on the album’s production. She pushed herself to incorporate more live keys, piano, and organic textures. In 2021 JVNA released her debut studio album – “Hope In Chaos,” which is a diverse collection of styles featuring JVNA‘s voice like it’s never been heard before, opening up about so much more than the standard dance floor love songs.

LAURA MISCH reveals new single ‘HIDE TO SEEK’ from debut album SAMPLE THE SKY

by the partae August 4, 2023

2023 marks the beginning of a bright new chapter for London-based multidisciplinary artist, producer and writer, Laura Misch.

With the announcement of her much-anticipated debut album Sample The Sky stoking the flames of excitement surrounding her and her music, Misch continues to tease her forthcoming studio record with the reveal of her new single, ‘Hide To Seek’.

Following on from the release of ‘Portals’ in June, ‘Hide To Seek’ lays additional emphasis on the dreamlike, ethereal energy Sample The Sky has threaded throughout its runtime. And as an exploration of Misch’s myriad influences, this new piece of music highlights her detailed and meticulous approach to the craft – making her broader debut project that much more of a fascinating one to consider, as fans patiently await its arrival on October 13th.

For fans of artists including Miraa May, Mitski, Cleo Sol and Bon Iver, ‘Hide To Seek’ captivates from the beginning.

“The kind of elemental scope of the album really does expand between the earth and the sky. The track is about desire and wanting someone to draw out parts of yourself that you’re hiding and how we’re all shaped by this interplay. The forest undergrowth feels like a perfect metaphor for the subconscious mind, and it’s a charged song. I imagined these mycelial threads leading the listener into the album world.”
LAURA MISCH

This feeling of enchantment that weaves its way around ‘Hide To Seek’ plays into the album’s broader themes of being present, connected and cognisant of the natural world around us. Organic electronic production buoy a narrative delivered with sensitivity. Haunting saxophone and synths bring the track into a unique sonic space, with Misch’s voice being the main guiding force.

On Sample The Sky, a variety of collaborators worked with Misch in bringing her ideas to life. Recorded in South London, Sample The Sky features stellar performances from Misch’s live band, Marysia Osu (harp) and Tomáš Kašpar (guitar), as well as noted composer/producer, William Arcane.

Single Artwork: Ella Pavlides

“Sample the Sky is an album that can be distilled as the feeling you have when you see the sky and you are in such awe that you feel compelled to photograph it and send it to someone – the moments that feel so intimate and personal yet universal, un-ownable and ephemeral.”
LAURA MISCH

Laura Misch’s upward trajectory in recent years has seen her emerge as one of the U.K.’s brightest new names. Performances on renowned stages and at events including SXSW, Royal Albert Hall, Berghain and Eurosonic speak to her versatility and sphere of influence. And then there’s the widespread support of her music from global media and radio including BBC Radio 1, BBC 6 Music, Wonderland Magazine, The Guardian, NME and Clash Magazine – Laura Misch has wasted no time in establishing a legacy for her name, all on her own.

PRAISE FOR LAURA MISCH

“Laura Misch brings such sentimentality to her music and imbues it with modern electronic flourishes”

Shane Codd Gives Timeless 90s Dance Vibes On His New Dance-Pop Crossover Smash “Something More”

by the partae August 4, 2023
written by the partae

Artist: Shane Codd
Title: Something More
Label: Tileyard Music

Download / Stream

Platinum-certified Irishman Shane Codd showcases his talent and sonic diversity with a new single “Something More.” Listeners around the globe may recognize him from the quarantine-era breakthrough anthem “Get Out My Head,” which in addition to claiming Gold and Platinum certifications, peaked at #5 on the Irish Singles Chart, and within the Top 10 of the charts in the United Kingdom. On his brand new “Something More” the young producer brings back his upbeat, addictive style, which opens with digitized chords offset by soulful vocals, then quickly builds into a euphoric progressive drop accompanied by soaring melodies and hopeful lyrics. The song spreads a positive message, complete with an easy-listening, 90’s inspired sonic style, creating the perfect formula for the next midsummer anthem. Codd was inspired by the feeling of the drops in songs such as Eric Prydz‘s “Opus” when he made the single, for which he said that he cast the rules aside and let creativity guide him. Codd initially caught global attention with “Get Out My Head,” which went viral with a locally charged, grassroots approach and changed his life for good. After being skyrocketed into the electronic music scene, we can’t wait to see what Shane Codd has up his sleeve next.

“Working on ‘Something More‘ was similar to when I made ‘Get Out My Head,’ where I made it on my own in my bedroom in Cavan in Ireland with my headphones on, staying up until 6AM. I started actually by feeling a little stuck on what to do, as I was working on another idea, and it wasn’t going anywhere. I took out the keyboard and started playing notes with a sound I really liked from the Nexus plugin. Then I looked on Splice for vocals that I thought suited. I decided not to play by any rules in the song as I wanted to make it fun and how I wanted and not worry about anyone else. That made the process very enjoyable and sort of bold to break the rules. The long intro on the Original Mix was something I wanted to have in there to try and build an epic euphoric moment, something like Eric Prydz‘s ‘Opus‘ with the tempo starting slow and building up to build the energy. I also wanted to go for a 90s trancey vibe, and I think it sounded a bit more modern too, which I liked.” – Shane Codd about “Something More“

“After making ‘Get Out My Head‘ in my bedroom and releasing it during the pandemic in 2020, I was blown away by the reaction immediately. People were sharing it and playing it at their drinking sessions during the sunny weekend we got in Ireland end of May this year. It went from that to people telling me they heard the track being played in someone’s car in different towns and then to it starting to get thousands of streams online. I was so excited I would sit out in the car and take videos of it on the radio. Getting signed to Polydor afterward was amazing. The team was great, and they really sent the record flying. It was Top 10 in a few countries, including the United Kingdom, and the Top 5 in Ireland for weeks and hit charts in Belgium, The Netherlands, and Poland and #1 on Shazam in multiple countries. It also went #1 on the US Dance Radio chart. I was blown away and so grateful. This song completely changed my life, and I am forever grateful to everyone for their support, and now I just want to keep going. In the meantime, I was doing remixes for the likes of Ellie Goulding, Anne-Marie, Little Mix, The Wanted, and Becky Hill while also working on new tracks. Then, of course, pressure came as well, but I like to look at the positive side and be grateful. I feel like now I’ve been in the game for almost 3 years, got to do 2 years of gigs, and finally have experience in the game. Since there’s a lot more to the music industry, there’s still loads to learn. I’m excited for the future and to get all the new music I’ve been working on out. I’m really doing music that I love and inspires me and takes influence from music I love and that I want to play out – 90s / 00s trance and house being keywords and also with influences from the likes of Avicii, Swedish House Mafia and more. Starting a new journey with my new management and label is exciting.” – Shane Codd about releasing his breakthrough hit “Get Out My Head“

Shane Codd is a 24-year-old DJ/Producer from Dublin, Ireland. House music runs through his veins. His love for it can be traced back to when he was a child; he’d listen to club classics at home, in the car with his mother, with mates at school, anywhere. Its effect is fully felt on his breakout single “Get Out My Head,” which nods to the late 90s/early 2000s dance sound, albeit with his own unique twist. Created in his bedroom at his family home as a form of escape when life paused due to the pandemic, the track became inescapable itself, resulting in a Top 10 hit on the Official UK Singles Chart as well as Top 5 in his native Ireland, racking up over 20 million streams across both territories. While he is an entirely self-taught producer, it wasn’t always easy. He remembers dropping out of college for a year, moving into a damp apartment in Dublin with no heating, and struggling to pay rent, all so he could focus solely on making music. 5 years on, he admits: “I still have loads to learn, it’s the exciting bit for me. I’m learning piano now – it’s a life goal to get good at it“. His goal is a simple but ambitious one. Like his heroes of the genre – Avicii, Gigi D’Agostino and Alice Deejay, he wants “to go down as a legendary dance producer, someone who is respected, brought out good music and put on a great live show. I’d love it if my music was remembered in 20 years like Robin S‘ “Show me Love,” one that people still love & doesn’t get old, truly classic tunes.”

Perth’s Alt-Indie Singer-Songwriter, Jay Wood Invites Listeners to Embark on a Raw and Soul-Stirring Adventure with EP, ‘Respire’

by the partae August 4, 2023
written by the partae

Following the release of ‘Oh Well’ and ‘Initial Pulse’, dynamic and resilient alt-indie acoustic singer songwriter, Jay Wood, will release her much-anticipated EP, ‘Respire’ on 1st September 2023. Hailing  from Perth, Western Australia, Jay Wood’s alternative indie acoustic sound has been likened to the  lyrical prowess of artists such as Phoebe Bridgers and Missy Higgins, creating a unique and captivating  musical experience.

“Respire” is a celebration of human resilience and choice. Jay Wood was living her best life when, at  age 24, her life took an unexpected turn following an accident caused by a drunk driver, leaving her  with a catastrophic traumatic brain injury that threatened to limit her singing, playing and writing  musical ability. Instead of succumbing to circumstances she refused to allow herself to be defined by  them and continued performing her musical career regardless.

At the face of immense difficulty, Jay set forth on an extraordinary journey of recovery and self discovery. Overcoming seemingly insurmountable hurdles, she relearned her craft, rewrote lost  melodies, and emerged stronger and more determined than ever. As the result of this perseverant  endeavour came Jay’s exquisite EP “Respire”, an ode to human spirit’s capacity for triumphing over  any obstacle.

Respire’ is an EP which delves deeply into what it means to live life fully and value every breath taken.  It explores themes such as love, journeying life’s obstacles and realising they can become  transformative experiences. Jay Wood’s honest lyrics and melodies allow listeners to connect on an  intimately personal level with his songs.

Jay Wood collaborated with producer, Norman Solander Studios to create an EP that engages the  senses, inviting listeners to explore their emotions through her mesmerising soundscapes.

Jay’s music is more than an expression of her artistry. It serves as an invitation for her listeners to  find hope and courage for themselves in their daily lives. With lyrics drawn from life experiences such  as love, life, death and the human condition, her songs provide a refreshing perspective on love, life,  death and human experiences alike. Through her songs she strives to foster unity while leaving a  lasting impactful reminder that everyone deserves happiness in their own way.

Jay Wood is an inspirational alt-indie acoustic singer-songwriter based out of Perth, Western  Australia. With her engaging combination of alternative indie acoustic music and captivating  storytelling, her music touches listeners deeply – providing hope and resilience motivational aid for  other navigating life’s obstacles courageously and graciously.

Respire will be released across all major streaming platforms on 1st September 2023 and celebrates  human strength, resilience and the ability to overcome life’s obstacles.

Subrosa Interview

by the partae August 3, 2023
written by the partae

Where are you currently based?

We’re currently a bit scattered! We’re all originally from Sydney but Henry (drums) and Alex (vocals and guitar) buggered off to Melbourne and Tasmania about 1-2 years ago. Zach (vocals and bass) and Ben (guitar) are still kicking it in Sydney.

How did Subrosa form?

We’ve been making music together on and off for about 5 years. We spent a good portion of 2021 jamming and performing around Sydney once Covid had simmered down a little. We were keen to head to the studio to capture that period of time before a few of us were due to head back overseas. As we worked on the songs we arrived at a place that felt new and different to how we’d been playing live and so it felt fitting to start a new project – thus SUBROSA was born!

What’s been happening recently?

We put out our first single – GALAXY – at the end of last year and have just released another – NO COMPLY. We’ve been starting to play live again and managed to squeeze onto Beastmode’s ‘Back on the Map’ Pre-show back in June which was a lotta fun. Currently we’re getting things into gear and trying to prepare for our EP Launch show that’s round the corner!

Your latest single ‘NO COMPLY’ is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting?

A couple of us are big fans of DIIV and the very first jam that sparked the original ideas – the bones of what’s now the verse – felt to us to have come from that inspiration (enough so that we saved the scratch recording of it under that name). A few of us grew up on punk and hardcore so I think we have a tendency to want to want to bring that energy in at times and the chorus was one of those times.

This energy also kind of naturally influenced the initial angst and anti-establishment nature of the lyrical content. At the same time coming out of COVID as we we’re heading back to parties and raves we found ourselves thinking about the importance of community and places of gathering that we’d so missed and so all these influences and sounds kind of collided.

Where and when did you record/produce/master and who did you work with?

We recorded with our dear friend Elliot Gallart at The Chameleon Studios. We’ve worked with him in the past and he’s definitely got a knack for bringing the best out of us. This was towards the end of 2021 and we spent about a week or so in there with him. He recorded and produced it for us and we sent it to the don Alan Douches of West West Side music to get mastered.

How did you approach the recording process?

We came in with around 8 demos with the intention to record 5. We showed them to Elliot and asked his opinion of what he thought could work well as a cohesive piece of work. Refreshingly some of the tracks that we thought were shoe-ins weren’t at the top of his list and he was keen to strive towards a more concise and bigger sound to what we’d planned/anticipated.

This led to the recording process being a lot more dynamic and collaborative and it really brought the best out of the tunes (whilst being a hell of a lotta fun). Elliot works with a lot of heavier bands and he was able to tap into that heavy influence that we grew up on but often keep a little too at bay. It was super gratifying to lean back into that side of things.

What does this single mean to you?

It’s a really great summation of our sound and where we’re at. It has this nice balance of our eclectic influences whilst still being all tied together in a cohesive way to a degree that we’ve always kind of wanted to achieve. As for the meaning of the track itself, whilst definitely a reaction to some pretty oppressive times a couple years back, it also represents a message looking to the future to keep fighting for our passions and the things that make us feel connected and free.

Please tell us about your upcoming EP:

We’re super excited to finally have it out there as we’ve had it sitting now for a little while. We titled the record ‘SPACE ON EARTH’ as each of the tracks felt like their own little worlds to us. Whilst inspired and set in places of familiarity, they also ponder what things could be like ‘elsewhere’ and the notion that this elsewhere may not be as far away as we think. Similar to each of the singles, the record as a whole branches off in a few different directions and we can’t wait for people to join us for the brief but packed little ride.

Where and when will the EP launch show be and what can we expect?

EP Launch is on the 28th of August at the Botany View in Newtown! Our friends Dead Routes and Sprinter are opening for us and it should be quite the evening. We’re itching to go so one should expect some kind of release of pent up energy.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

A couple off the top of our our domes and in no particular order…Nabihah Iqbal, Kali Uchis, The Smile, Yves Tumor, Larry June, George Clanton, Beach Fossils, Fliptrix

What’s planned for the remainder of 2023?

After the EP Launch we’re playing another couple of shows here and there til the end of the year. We’re also trying to squeeze some more time back in the studio before the year is out to keep the ball rolling!

Favourite food and place to hangout?

We do tend to give the Marrickville Bowlo a lot of patronage as it’s just round the corner from where we rehearse – it would be patronage to say anywhere else really but if there was a gun to our heads we may blurt out something along the lines of Pastizzi Cafe…

Turning 10 this year, Heaps Gay has become an institution of Sydney’s queer scene and will mark their 10th birthday with three parties this Spring. The first, HEAPS GAY STREET PARTY – 10TH BIRTHDAY presented by Heaps Normal – as part of Marrickville Block Weekender on 30 September, builds on the success of their famed Roadwerk events, dancing day-to-night with a house, pop and nu-disco soundtrack. Across two stages, expect the impeccable party vibes that queers and allies alike have come to know and love – from BIG WETT to Billy Davis and Tseba each joined by some special friends, Stereogamous, Dameeeela, MungMung and many more – with a sprinkling of drag and colourful roaming performers for good measure.

After a decade of dominance, the team who gave us Bad Friday present their latest offering to Sydney’s live music scene – Off The Rails. Taking place on 1 October, it boasts a bold lineup traversing punk, garage and hardcore; led by ferocious pub rockers Amyl and the Sniffers and underground legends The Mark of Cain, plus a slew of scene stalwarts and rising standouts including Private Function, RVG, Shady Nasty, Dust, Southeast Desert Metal, DOWNGIRL, The Neptune Power Federation, Chimers, Organs, Itchy & The Knits with more to be announced. Off The Rails will grace both Marrickville Block Weekender and the Bar On the Hill Forecourt in Newcastle in its inaugural year.

The long-awaited return of Throttle Roll will finally arrive on 2 October, with custom bikes, live bands and booze; bringing together the fun and frivolity of Australian motorcycling culture. This isn’t your typical motorcycle event, though; while some of the country’s wildest motorcycle builds will be on display, Throttle Roll has built a reputation since its first event in 2013 to celebrate the lively culture of this creative community. Think rock and roll, swinging hips and singing lips. Headline bands including Papa Pilko and the Binrats, XOLO and more. Close out the long weekend surrounded by good vibes and rock and roll, all while revelling in the fun-loving culture of custom motorcycles.

Heaps Normal co-founder and CEO Andy Miller shared, “Heaps Normal is so pumped to present the Marrickville Block Weekender. It epitomises what we love most about our inner west Sydney community — an exciting mix of different subcultures coming together and celebrating the fact that our individual differences make our worlds more interesting and fun. There’s nothing more heaps normal than that. Heaps Gay, Off The Rails and Throttle Roll…what a party! Heaps Gay have been running events that create a fun, safe space for people to express themselves completely and freely. They’re a pillar of the Sydney nightlife and have been providing continuous solace for the queer community and allies to come out of their shell since their first event in 2013.”

Marrickville Block Weekender is a celebration of all that has defined the distinctive culture of the inner west. Underlined by diverse programming, fostering an inclusive experience and spotlighting different subcultures, it reflects the broad attitudes and interests which make the area so exciting and engaging.

Heaps Normal is changing drinking culture by brewing beer that tastes so good, you won’t miss the alcohol. They don’t believe alcohol is the enemy, they’re just challenging all of us to tell better stories. Heaps Normal is Canberra born, Melbourne made and building a home in Sydney. Most importantly, they’re a proudly independent Australian company and certified B Corp.

Alpha Centauri ‘Get Your Money Up’ Premiere

by the partae August 1, 2023
written by the partae

The second preview of the up-and-coming singer and MC’s upcoming debut album, Get Your Money Up is a funked-up anthem about making your dreams become a reality — about showing up and putting one foot in front of the other to move forward. “There are a lot of people that do nothing more than brag about their goals and dreams — but 80% of it is fabricated,” Alpha says. “This song is about seriously pursuing your dream — whether it’s music, the arts, a side hustle, education, or a life goal. Nothing happens unless YOU put the effort into it over the long term. There are no cheat codes to success in the real world.” Get Your Money Up is both an optimistic blueprint to following your dreams and a biographic tale of Alpha’s own ambition to get to this point in his career. Alpha Centauri (real name: Sean Chigumba) is originally from Zimbabwe, where he was educated (and later worked) as a lawyer. However, after passing the bar and becoming licensed in his homeland, he realized that the legal life was not for him. He changed gears and got on a plane for Canada with the plan of giving music a serious shot. Alpha made quick use of his new B.C. home by releasing a single (with fellow ex-pat Zimbabwean Swisher) about his experience leaving home (Away in 2016), which he self-produced on a 12-year-old laptop on his apartment’s kitchen table. Away was recently used as the theme to the feature film Evelyne, now streaming on the Roku Channel.

Alpha then set his sights on getting in front of local live audiences, performing shows with local hip-hop artists such as Moka Only, Illvis Freshly, Mo Moshiri (of Sweatshop Union) and Sirreal to refine his craft. During this time, he also began a surge of songwriting, which continued through the COVID lockdowns of 2020. Eventually, Alpha caught the ear of producer Wes Smith and engineer Justin Hicks. Eight songs were recorded with a full band between January and October 2022, with the Afrobeat-tinged first single I’ll Fly released in January 2023.

Tence Interview

by the partae August 1, 2023
written by the partae
Where are you currently based?
Nottingham. How did you first start playing music?
I was always into music. I first started playing piano in Littleover Derby when I was 6.

What’s been happening recently?
Just had my first release party and it went way better than I imagined. I was really stressed about it and wanted people to enjoy themselves and looking at the videos back it looks like they did.Your latest single ‘Antidote’ is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting?
A lot of influence from Dave’s album Psychodrama. But I actually wrote the 8 bar break in the middle (the antidote bars) 2 years ago in Lockdown when I think everyone was struggling with mental health and loneliness.

How did you go about writing Antidote?
I wanted to write a song which is relevant to what I’ve been seeing more recently, regarding social media, mental health and politics. I wanted to shed a light on all the lies that the Tory government are giving out and the pure stupidity of the past prime ministers who have been in power most recently, for example Boris Johnson. I truly hope we escape this period of inflation right now and the world changes for the better. I want people to relate to what I’m saying and if they do or not I don’t mind but I appreciate anyone who takes the time of their day to play one of my songs.

Where and when did you record/produce/master and who did you work with?
The track was produced by The Deadrose Music Company, a very good friend who’s a talented producer and engineer and also a big inspiration to me. I recorded the 1st draft vocal of antidote in a home studio and realised it had a lot of potential. So then took it to Elementz studio in Nottingham to get a better, more clean recording. The engineer in Elementz was Andy Zoutr, another good friend and a talented producer/ engineer. The master was done by Gawp music (a good friend of Deadrose).

How did you approach the recording process?
I delivered the vocal with more energy and feeling, compared to my other more laid back flow. I felt that more expression in the vocal was needed due to the topics I talk about in the song.

What is the meaning behind this single?
I wanted to show a different and more vulnerable side to my music hoping people would connect with my songs more.
Please tell us about any upcoming music:
The upcoming singles are bangers, a couple more collaborations coming up as well…Who are you listening to at the moment?
I’m listening to a lot of Jhus at the moment, he just dropped a project and I’m a big fan of it.

What’s planned for the remainder of 2023?
This year I want to and will stay consistent with my music and releases.

Favourite food and place to hangout?
When I’m home I love eating boiled eggs with toast. But when I’m out having food at the moment I like getting a spicy chicken burger and chips lol, it’s just peng.  And honestly, my favourite to hang out is my room, because I have everything that I need there…. my music setup and a TV, couldn’t ask for more.
