ULTRAVLT

by the partae October 12, 2022
written by the partae

Where are you currently based?

We are all based in Naarm/Melbourne, Australia

How did the band form?

Sarah met Jack and Connor through her singing Mentor (Susie Ahern), who happens to be their mum. Sarah intended to form a group of session players to support her solo career.

Sarah and Jay had been friends all through high school, (since they were 12 years old) and studied music together as well. Sarah asked Jay to also be a part of the session players as a pianist. They all became friends very quickly, sharing interests in the same genre of music.

There came a point where Sarah realized that their friendships and musical connections with each other were so special, so they all decided to become a band to continue sharing and creating that magic with each other.

What’s been happening recently?

We have been on a high from releasing our 2 latest singles ‘ I never liked you in the first place’ and ‘Okay’! These were accompanied by our first music videos, which has been exciting!

At the moment, we are playing a lot of live shows, supporting some amazing local bands as well as working on our online presence.

We also just finished recording another two music videos that are set for release at the end of 2022 and early 2023!

We are also hitting the studio again in November to get some music prepared for releases in 2023! A lot of great things are in the works since the pandemic and it feels great being able to create and release new music.

Your latest single ‘Okay’ is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting?

Bring me the Horizon’s ‘amo’ was one of the albums we were listening to a lot during the writing process, and also Issues album, ‘Beautiful Oblivion’.

We’ve always been influenced by Paramore and Bring me the horizon.

With songwriting, we usually just write straight from the heart.

Sarah usually does most of the lyric writing, and finds that it stems from lessons learnt and mental battles that people don’t really like to talk about.

How did you go about writing Okay?

Connor actually came up with the main guitar riff, and then we all put our own personal touches on the track.

Before each song we have a pre-production day with our producers, where we all throw our ideas in, we would bring forward songs that we’re currently working on. Pre-production really helps us strive for a goal for each song and makes sure that we all have the same vision.

We originally brought our producers a different song that we were working on, but ended up scrapping it half way as we didnt feel it matched the energy we wanted to portray.

Where and when did you record/produce/master and who with?

We recorded/produced and co-wrote this song with Ash Daws and Evan Lee at The Loud Noise Estate in Melbourne, in early 2020.

We have always loved working with them as we feel they bring out the absolute best in us!

We have an amazing creative relationship and friendship with them, which we find very special and are super grateful for.

Please tell us about the Ultravlt mention on WILLOW’s social media?

At the time, we had just established ourselves as Ultravlt, but since it was in the height of the pandemic we began creating an online presence as a new band, so we decided to do our own renditions of songs that we were loving.

One of the songs we did was ‘Transparent Soul’ by WILLOW. We had heaps of fun making it!

Jack’s fiance (Molly), called Sarah at 7am to tell us that WILLOW re-posted the cover on her profile. All of us were in shock as we didn’t expect her to see it, let alone share it on her page! This opportunity gained Utravlt many new followers and expanded their audience internationally. We are incredibly grateful and were ecstatic.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

Sarah is obsessed with Demi Lovato’s latest album “Holy Fvck”, as well as her usual favorites The 1975’s, Paramore, Gretta Ray and currently loving Cat Burns.

Connor is listening to Sleep tokens “This Place Will Become Your Tomb” and Stand Atlantics       “F.E.A.R”

Jay is always listening to either The Garden or Death Grips. Anything experimental is always up their alley.

Jack is currently listening to Forest Claudette, Sleep Token and hundredth. Loves to listen to a bunch of different genres.

What do you like to do away from music?

Music is a very big part of all our lives, so it’s very rare for us to do much else.

Sarah loves acting and is currently working on her acting career, she also loves to go on long drives and spends every other moment with her dogs.

Connor is very passionate about cars. He loves modifying them and working on them. Connor also likes to spend his time doing graphic design.

Jack loves to spend time with his fiance and dog. He is also passionate about fish, and is obsessed with his fish tanks. Jack is always creating and writing music in many different genres.

Jay is a big book nerd and is just finishing up their masters in librarianship. They love the contrast of spending evenings at loud gigs, and days in the quiet coziness of a library.

What’s planned for the future of Ultravlt going into 2023 and beyond?

Ultravlt do plan on continuing to write and release tracks as well as continue to work on their online content. We aim to do bigger shows and hopefully get to tour one day!

We plan on having some headline shows coming and continue to create a household name.

Favorite food and place to hangout?

Our favorite foods are pizza, American BBQ, Chinese, and KBBQ.

Our favorite places to hang out are Philip island and bed.

Alien Tango – New single ‘1000 Years’ out now – Watch video

ALIEN TANGO
NEW SINGLE ‘1000 YEARS’ OUT NOW

WATCH VIDEO HERE

London-based Spanish musician Alien Tango (real name Alberto García) has released his new single ‘1000 Years’.

“1000 Years is the first song I ever wrote for my new record, and as soon as I wrote it, I already knew it would be the last on the tracklist. I basically began from the end and reverse-engineered my way back to the beginning of the album. Still, I want it to be the first one I share with you today”, Alberto explains. “A high-energy pop rock song, it’s a love song towards everything. Fuelled by existential angst but finding a moment of enlightenment: anything could last one second or a thousand years, it doesn’t matter, what matters is the infinity of possibilities contained in the current moment”.

LISTEN TO ‘1000 YEARS’ HERE

The song comes accompanied but a video directed by Kirin J Callinan and Nacho Errando. “The video was pretty much improvised during a couple of beautiful sunsets in Cabo de Palos, Spain”.

Catch him and his band live at The Moth Club in London in October:

Saturday 22 October – The Moth Club, London – TICKETS

Alien Tango is Alberto García, an artist from Spain who lives in London but whose antennas are directed to outer space, from where he receives emissions full of psychedelia, glam, hip-hop, oriental music and helium-infected vocals. Praised by the New York Times after his performance at SxSW festival (he’s also performed at Primavera Sound and Benicàssim, among others), his musical mixture is as unpredictable as it is satisfying, with room for synthesizers, sitars, accordions and anime samples. All of which confirm this unorthodox multi-instrumentalist as one of the most peculiar and fascinating creators in the current London scene. Recently, he started a TikTok profile which exploded very quickly, reaching over 4M views and 50k+ followers in the space of a few months.

Alien Tango is currently busy putting the finishing touches to his debut album, with more details to be announced soon.

Today the anticipated debut album from Pei, the solo project of Joji Malani (Broth Records) arrives in Pei’s Pageant, highlighted through his latest music video for ‘Medicine‘ out now. LISTEN HERE + WATCH ‘MEDICINE’ HERE.

Warm, relaxed and instrumentally rich, Pei’s Pageant is an exultant exploration of self and culture unveiling previously unseen edges to Joji Malani’s identity. Across the album’s nine tracks, as Pei, he freely explores a variety of sonic influences from bright, rich production; to orchestration that swings between energetic, borderline ambient and country balladry. In relocating from London to Sydney, where he had been based since 2016, Pei was brought to life in the home studio of close friend and longtime collaborator Tim Fitz (Middle Kids), following a near-decade of writing in studios and touring the world as a founding member of one of Australia’s most revered local exports. More than just a passion project turned big, Joji’s solo debut is a moving illustration of creative evolution.

Upon reflection, Joji reveals “There are a lot of thoughts and feelings which are hard to consolidate and compartmentalise. I think clarity can only come through time. 1 year on, 5 years on, 10 years on. That’s when I will really know. I think for now, there’s more relief and appreciation that it’s out there. I did most of this alone. I’ve had the support of great people. But I really drove this. I don’t know how it’s perceived by others but these are my ideas, the music, the clips, assets, everything. My music, my label. There’s a lot I could have done better but I’ve done this myself in the midst of some strong challenges and now it’s out. I’ve done my best to represent my fam, my people, my country and honour my influences and my heroes. I’m just grateful.”

Released on Fiji Day today, Joji shares some background on the album art, explaining “There is sat a Fijian woman with the dollar notes stuck on her. Each note, from every single cover, has a bit about myself and the various things I enjoy, for example, ‘Themesong’ alludes to my love of football and ‘Count To 10’ alludes to my love of effects pedals. I had this idea of what the album cover would be and worked backwards from there. I’ve probably been more conceptual about the artwork than I have been with the music itself.

“The cover art,” he continues, “is meant to depict a Fijian woman taking part in something called ‘Fakawela’ which is a Tongan word adopted into our culture. There’s a bit of crossover with Tonga, especially in my family. The Tongans colonised the Fijian island of Lau and despite being a part of Fiji, is still quite Tongan with its language and customs. Within the Fakawela, a select group of young people at any significant or celebratory function will dance either in tapa (traditional material with patterns) or a curated item of clothing and rub oil on their upper body. The significance of the oil is to capture the dollar notes that the elders of the event would place on the dancers as they dance.”

Above all, Pei’s Pageant is reflective of someone just trying in life and art, fading through memories of a childhood spent in Fiji, displays of beauty and brawn, and pure creative expression for the sake of it; a cacophonic introduction to Joji Malani as he is today, best reflected in the album focus ‘Medicine‘ – “This is me, you know?” he explains. A song that speaks to loss across multiple forms, this sentiment is harnessed through ‘Medicine‘s music video, starring Alexander Hodge (Insecure, Resort To Love), directed by Jonathan Zerger and assisted by Sosefina Fuamoli – WATCH ABOVE.

“Medicine is the first song I have attempted to write,” Joji reveals. “I had written the first verse and chorus back in 2013 over a simple loop I put together with my sister’s little keyboard and a line 6 DL4. The song is very simple but to me, it’s the best and most meaningful thing I’ve written thus far. When I started writing this track, I had just experienced my first real heartbreak. Fast forward to 2019 and the song took on a new meaning, I had lost a few people in my life and life just didn’t feel the same without them. They were unreplicable types who make society and the world better. People who I not only adored or respected but people who objectively make the world a better place. Social and relational cures. Like an antidote. I liked alluding to these people as medicine as I come from a strong medical family and am named after my Father’s brother who is a doctor.”

Pei’s Pageant moves with grace, harnessed by Joji’s heartfelt, direct and confident vocals at the project’s core. Its persistent pacing keeps us hypnotised within the fantastical, musical world etched through vibrant and slick arrangements including ‘Honest‘, ‘Themesong‘ and the recent ‘Count To 10‘. Pulling from the deep crevasses of his life, here reflections on relationships, romantic and otherwise, are balanced with  with free creative experimentation.

Weaving contemporary indie, pop and rock influences with the memories and influence of his Fijian culture with natural ease, lifting his stage name from the Fijian word for baby, Pei’s Pageant arrives produced alongside Fitz, backing vocals from Hannah Joy (Middle Kids) arrangements from Macie Stewart (Whitney, Ohmme, SZA, Chance the Rapper), mix engineered by Antonia Gauci (Daine, Troye Sivan, Kesha) and mastered by Grammy-nominated Ryan Schwabe (Pussy Riot, Shamir, Oneohtrix Point Never). Where some consider infancy a daunting prospect, Pei’s Pageant harnesses the humility and reward that comes with learning to take your first steps, a second time.

Pei’s Pageant LP is out now via Broth Records, buy/stream it here.

Taylor B-W

by the partae October 11, 2022
written by the partae
Where are you currently based?
I’m in Sydney, born and raised.

How did you first start playing music?
I grew up in a musical household, so music came very natural to me. As a toddler, I was always singing, writing (terrible) kiddy love songs, choreographing something, drawing and painting, playing out scenarios with my toys by myself (only child syndrome), and just being creative.
However, as a career, I didn’t take music particularly seriously until 2017 when I randomly entered into an international ‘battle-of-the-bands’ competition, called Emergenza.  Having never performed my original songs in public, I was absolutely shocked when I won the National title in Australia, and was then flown over to Germany to compete in the international finals, coming 4th overall!  I came back home with a better sense of self and direction, and went straight into crafting my sound and artistry as Taylor B-W… and haven’t looked back since!

What’s been happening recently?
Oh my gosh, soooo much!  Earlier this year, I released 3 singles (High Demand, ‘In Ur Net’ and Tears Of Coal’), then I released my debut EP, BTW TBW, in August, with a sold-out release party at Bootleggers, Newtown (upstairs Kelly’s On King), I’m about to embark on my first tour around Regional NSW in October, to celebrate my EP, I moved-in with my partner, and I’ve just released my post-EP single, ‘Last Child’!  Talk about a lot in a year!

Your single ‘Last Child’ is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting?
After I wrote out the initial lyrics in a stream of consciousness, and stood back, I realised I was really channelling Lana Del Rey’s ‘sadcore’ style.  I knew from then that I wanted the music to be big, epic, grandiose… a total soundscape.  To also help with that grand sound, I used synths that would remind me of our beautiful planet – for instance, the low, brooding synths at the start sound similar to whales in the ocean.
As I was going through the production process, I would often return to these song references: Adele’s ‘Hello’ and ‘Skyfall’, Lana Del Rey’s ‘Ride’, Amy Shark’s ‘I Said Hi’ and, of course, Michael Jackson’s ‘Earth Song’ (the biggest influence) to reflect that epic, indie, dream-pop feel.

How did you go about writing Last Child and what does this song mean to you?
‘Last Child’ was a stream of consciousness as I was crying… it was 2017, the year I was studying to become a zookeeper (yes, I am a qualified zookeeper!), so I was learning so much about our world’s flora and fauna and it opened my eyes up to our climate emergency, more than ever before.  At that moment, when I was writing ‘Last Child’, I was so depressed about the state of our planet, with so many politicians putting their head in the sand and avoiding the climate crisis, that I just put pen to paper through my tears.
‘Last Child’ is honestly one of my favourite songs I’ve written.  I’m pretty proud of it!

Where and when did you record/produce/master and who did you work with?
It was produced/mixed/mastered by Peter Holz at Love Hz studios in Leichhardt – early 2020!  However, it never felt like the right time to release the song… till now!

How did you approach the recording process?
I actually had a fully produced demo going into the studio with Pete, but I wasn’t happy with it and wanted to completely start from scratch and approach the process with an open mind.  I think it turned out beautifully, but I am bias!

Who are you listening to at the moment?
Oh I listen to a lot of music, but I guess my focus artist at the moment is Finneas! Having just seen Billie Eilish in concert a few weeks back, I was so inspired that I thought I’d deep dive into this genius’ catalogue and now I’m obsessed!  Also, Dora Jar supported Billie Eilish all through her world tour, so I’ve been listening to a lot of her music too!

Please tell us about your training with zookeeping and how it has mixed with your music career:
So I took a step back from the entertainment industry after suffering from a mental health illness back in 2016 and switched my attention to conservation after going on a life-changing wildlife volunteering trip to Africa, where I learnt so much about the caring of animals.  I came home and immediately launched into studying more.  Initially I just did an Animal Studies course at the Taronga Training Institute in Sydney, but I then progressed to a zookeeping course at Taronga Zoo in Dubbo which was the most incredible period of my life.  I made so many beautiful friends (both humans and non-humans)!
Although music called me back after winning Emergenza (therefore I never actually got to apply for a zookeeping job), I now do as much as I can to use my very small, emerging music platform to advocate for wildlife conservation and fight against climate change.  Even the smallest of lifestyle changes can make all the difference!

Your debut EP BTW TBW was released last month, please tell us about how this EP came about and what it means to you:
BTW TBW is a collection of pop, r&b songs that I had written over the past six years – it was a huge relief to finally release these songs because, although I love them all to bits, it is nice to be able to close a chapter of my life that I’ve been wanting to move on from for a while.  I’ve dealt with a lot of demons and have also had some interesting experiences with people, and this EP lays it all out.  I am so happy the EP has resonated so well with my audience!
Although I’ve had ‘Last Child’ for so long too, the sound and direction of ‘Last Child’ is so different to the tracks on BTW TBW that I didn’t want to include it on the EP – it deserves its own time in the limelight!

You are on tour this October, where are you headed and what can we expect?
Expect fun and high energy shows!  This tour is a wonderful way for an emerging artist, like me, to be able to meet new audiences, explore new towns, and also help to reinvigorate the live music scene in regional towns that have faced a lot of hardship due to COVID, bushfires and floods in the past two years.  I’m grateful that Create NSW was able to help fund part of it because this is a great new step in my career and I cannot wait!
I will be performing my songs with my band, along with local special guests, in: Wagga Wagga, Blue Mountains, Bathurst, Central Coast, Newcastle, Wollongong, plus an extra show in Canberra.

What’s planned for 2023 and beyond?
Well 2022 was the year of releases… and I’m exhausted.  I need 2023 to be a time for resetting myself.  Like I mentioned before, my debut EP release, BTW TBW, allowed me to close a chapter of music that I had held close to my chest for a while.  So next year I am going to develop more as a producer, delve more into different sounds and musical directions and release new music that will test me and my audiences… I’m so pumped for what’s to come!

by the partae October 11, 2022
written by the partae

Above & Beyond are returning to Australia for a headline set.  Featuring a stellar, curated line-up of artists from their labels: Anjunabeats, Anjunadeep & Reflections.  The camping festival, Group Therapy Weekender Australia will be held at Yarra Valley Estate for the band’s first ever multi-day festival down under.

Taking place between Friday 16 December and Sunday 18 December in Victoria’s breathtaking Yarra Valley, ‘Group Therapy Weekender Australia’ is an intimate camping getaway for Australia’s ‘Anjunafamily.’ There will also be a program of wellness activities and workshops to enhance the experience, surrounded by the picturesque landscape that surrounds the region.  There will also be an offering of the very best food and drink, from Yarra Valley and beyond.

SYDNEY – HORDERN PAVILION SHOW

Above & Beyond make their return to Sydney on Friday 16th December. This is the group’s first show in Sydney since 2019 and their third time playing at Hordern Pavilion.

Catch the guys before they head to the Yarra Valley for their camping festival.

This is the Anjuna’s first festival event in Australia and follows on from the success of ‘Group Therapy Weekender’ at The Gorge, Washington State, which welcomed 23,000 campers last July and ‘Group Therapy Weekender’ London at Dockyards.

One of the world’s best-loved electronic groups, ‘Above & Beyond’ have headlined arenas around Australia over the last decade, bringing their anthemic dance songs to tens of thousands of fans.

About Above & Beyond

‘Above & Beyond,’ or Jono, Tony and Paavo as they are better known to their legions of fans around the world, have been at the forefront of electronic dance music for two decades.

Founders of the iconic ‘Anjunabeats’ and ‘Anjunadeep’ record labels and hosts of the weekly radio show ‘Group Therapy,’ (which reaches millions of dance lovers every Friday), the trio have earned two GRAMMY™️ nominations for anthems: ‘Northern Soul’ feat. Richard Bedford and ‘We’re All We Need’ feat. Zoë Johnston.  In 2018, the band’s fourth electronic album, ‘Common Ground’ debuted at number three on the ‘Official Billboard Album Chart.’

Described by UK music bible ‘Q Magazine’ as “the world’s biggest cult band,” Above & Beyond’s enviable list of sold-out shows, includes headline performances at historic venues such as: ‘Madison Square Garden’ NYC, ‘The Hollywood Bowl’ LA, ‘The Sydney Opera House’ Sydney, ‘Royal Albert Hall’ London, ‘Red Rocks Amphitheatre’ Colorado and record-breaking turnouts for their own festival events on LA’s Huntington Beach and at The Gorge Amphitheatre in Washington State.

The Kooks + The Vanns @ Festival Hall, Melbourne, 6th October, 2022

by the partae October 10, 2022
written by the partae

Photography + Words – Darren Chan

UK indie-pop band The Kooks have stayed the distance. Their Australian tour marks 15 years since their iconic debut album “Inside In / Inside Out”.

To a packed crowd at Festival Hall, The Vanns opened the evening unleashing their brand of loud and proud alternative rock. They didn’t hold back from delivering a short but energetic live set, complete with plenty of ear bleedingly loud fuzzed out guitar solos.

The Kooks hit the stage to cheers, performing the first six songs from the debut album. Starting their acoustic anthem “Seaside”, rolling into the guitar-driven “See the World”,  “Sofa Song”, “Ooh La”, and “You Don’t Love Me” had the crowd dancing.

The crowd chanting “Ohh Aah” in unison to the start of the anthemic “Bad Habit”, then leading into the catchy “Sweet Emotion” off their 2014 album “Listen”. The band showcased a few tracks off their latest “10 Tracks to Echo in the Dark” with “Modern Days” and “Connection”.

Singer Luke Pritchard thanked and acknowledged the fans in attendance, with guitarist/keyboardist Hugh Harris remarking “it felt like coming home”.

The band didn’t disappoint fans as they played more tracks from “Inside In / Inside Out” finishing with their hit song “Naive”.

The Kooks mentioned in a recent tv interview that at their stage of life, they chase nostalgia. And for myself and those who attended, hearing their music was a flashback to our youth.

Gammer Showcases His Growth and Evolution with 9-Track “Better Together” EP – Eclectic Fusion of Dubstep and Hardstyle Featuring Hudson Mohawke, Fatman Scoop, Riot Ten, and more. Out Now on Dim Mak

Artists: Gammer
Title: Better Together EP
Label: Dim Mak

Download / Stream

British legend Gammer got together with some of his closest artist friends to release his new EP “Better Together,” which features 9 tracks on which he collaborated with artists such as Hudson Mohawke, Fatman Scoop, Riot Ten, Linney, MYLK, Technikore, Stonebank, and more. The 3 new works include the EP‘s opening ominous and hard-hitting “Tech,” in collaboration with Stonebank, as well as the upbeat and bass-heavy “Falling Down” with Technikore and MYLK, and “Underneath,” featuring Linney, a cinematic vocal hardstyle gem. The new tracks complement some of Gammer‘s earlier hits, like “Quit” with Hudson Mohawke, “NGMF” with Riot Ten, or “Stampede” with Fatman Scoop, proving that his growth and evolution are constant and that he’s never going out of style. Read on for Gammer‘s take on his new project:

“I have always felt like I produced my best music when I work with other talented musicians. Having someone else in the room inspires me. Their skill pushes me to be more inventive and to try new things. It’s how I’ve most evolved since the day I first started creating in tiny studios around England. I had recently felt that I’d hit a bit of a creative wall and wanted to evolve again, and had this realization. So I got in touch with a lot of my closest friends and fellow producers. This EP is the product of that. I am very proud of it and what we have all created together. I believe it represents growth and evolution in the Gammer project in some tracks, as well as occasionally getting me back in touch with the sounds that originally made me smile and want to make music. I hope that anyone who hears “Better Together” will feel some of the excitement that I felt while making it. Additionally, if I am being fully honest, I also love being a tad lazy, and it’s always easier only having to produce half a track” – Gammer

English producer Gammer has become known in the dance circuit for his UK hardcore sound as well as trap and hardstyle, which attracted a new and younger generation of listeners to the heavy-hitting genres. He had become a household name on Monstercat by 2017, known for his timeless party anthems such as “The Drop” or “Party Don’t Stop” and collabs, such as “Quit” with Hudson Mohawke, “Incoming” with Steve Aoki or “Digressions” with Mija. Revered for his musical versatility and high-energy DJ sets, Gammer is a staple at some of the world’s biggest music festivals, including Tomorrowland, EDC, Ultra Music Festival, and many more. Gammer‘s addictive sound has brought him to the furthest corners of the world. As a storied producer, celebrated DJ, and powerful trendsetter, there’s no one quite like Gammer.

Life Without Andy

In the thick of their fast ascent and recent appearance on triple j’s Like A Version, surf-rock outfit The Terrys‘ debut album True Colour has arrived. LISTEN HERE.

Recorded at The Grove alongside Jack Nigro (Skegss, DMA’S, Julia Jacklin, Middle Kids), True Colour is fun, free-spirited and most significantly, creatively ambitious for the Gerringong outfit known for their easy-going, take-it-as-it-comes approach to life. “Our main thing was ‘just don’t overthink it and trust each other,” says vocalist Jacob of putting True Colour to tape. “Musically, it was a huge learning curve,” adds guitarist Lukas. “We all progressed so much as musicians… then we realised we’re just little fish in a massive tank and there’s a huge ocean out there to explore.”

Lifting notes from The Vaccines, Wavves and The Wombats’ festival-ready hooks and bright, fast-charged guitar lines, throughout their debut The Terrys‘ message is clear – a deeply contemplative release encouraging listeners to embrace the highs and lows as they happen; to find their true colours. “I hope they will listen to it and gain a sense that life is actually nice… that when they hear the record they can look outside and think ‘Oh, today’s going to be a good day’,” Jacob explains. “I hope they get a sense of life and ultimately make their own decisions on what the lyrics mean to them… that’s why it’s True Colour. We want them to think “What’s your true colour?”

Sanguine, empathetic and full of heart across twelve tracks, including their varied singles ‘Situation 99‘, ‘Rolling Stone‘, ‘Waiting For You‘ and ‘IDK‘, True Colour is a rich listen across genre and intent. Here they further their sun-dappled origins to expand their musical world into garage and DIY, psychedelia, funk and most boldly, hip hop through the Esoterik (Bliss & Eso) and Scraps featuring ‘Good Day‘.

Speaking of their collaboration, Eso shares “I actually met the boys on a plane… I was already seated and they walked on and instantly I was like ahh here comes a band, the amount of noise they were making. They didn’t notice me until the end of the flight, I got up and they start yelling out “Oiiii Esso mate!!” Some business guy next to me started shooting me a look like who do you think you are, then one of The Terrys’ leaned over to him and said “This bloke’s only one of the most iconic rappers in the country!” We kicked it off from that moment onwards. The boys hit me up a while later asking if I wanted to be on their track, and I was like always down to listen… and here we are. Love the track, love the boys.”

A rally cry for mates, music and good times, ‘Good Day‘ boasts of the love and positivity that’s “gonna shine through.” Speaking to the release, The Terrys share “Man, this song is huge for us because I remember listening to this podcast that Eso did with a bloke named Josh Wade, and Eso just spat some serious knowledge on me. He pretty much said in the podcast you can do whatever you want as long as truly believe in yourself 100%. I took that on board and I would listen to this podcast, I reckon at least once a day, while I was mowing lawns and whipper-snippering and just working my little bum off. I would just dream about what I could do in my life.

Now fast forward five years and I’ve made a song with Eso! It’s just insane to me. We’ve also got one of our best friends on, who I also used to look up to so much in high school with his rapping, Scraps.  He held his own and absolutely did the most banging verse straight after Eso which is pretty daunting but it didn’t even worry Scraps whatsoever. This song is huge for us and we hope that you guys like it just as much as we do.”

As a whole, True Colour is testimony to The Terrys‘ mastery in balancing the carefree and the considered. Sealing the auspicious fever that’s followed the group since their share-house jam beginnings, True Colour seals the group’s fate, positing their ambition as more infectious and cogent than many first thought. Experience The Terrys live across their national headline tour this October – November, joined by Nerve, Gold Fang, Dear Sunday and their inaugural Battle of the Bands winner Divers – see all tour dates + purchase tickets BELOW.

Nocturnal Animals Raise Their Middle Fingers with ‘Passive Tone’ And Announce Their Debut EP ‘Paint A Picture’

by the partae October 7, 2022
written by the partae

Previous support for Nocturnal Animals

“Are Nocturnal Animals inviting a mosh or a dance frenzy? Both I reckon.”
(Declan Byrne, Triple J)
[About ‘Dancing In The Blood’]

“A great blend of power and warmth. Nocturnal Animals reeled me in then blew my face off.”
(Lachie Pringle, Triple J)
[About ‘Where’s My Mind Been?’]

“A slowburn of an indie punk track, combining some really nice sonic elements! Can defs sense that Weezer influence, we love to hear it.”
4 / 5 stars (Pip Rasmussen, Triple J)

“With each and every one of their tracks, the Adelaide-based alt-rockers have struck gold, leaving us to seriously question just what magic tricks they have up their sleeves.”
(Hysteria Mag)

“They’re hitting where it hurts with post-breakup bitterness, but in a way that just sounds so good”
(Heavy Mag)

“Nocturnal Animals pack a punch with their raw alt-rock/punk sound”
(Aus Music Scene)

Stream ‘Passive Tone’

After a string of successful singles, skeleton punk-rockers Nocturnal Animals share their lead single ‘Passive Tone’ from their awaited debut EP–’Paint A Picture’ (out November 4).

Nocturnal Animals are anything but passive. Sculpting a strong sound from fuzzy guitars, heavy-handed drums and anthemic punk vocals, the Adelaide/Tarndanya three-piece have already found strong local support, earning themselves support slots with the DZ Deathrays, The Buoys, Nerve and Psychedelic Porn Crumpets.

After a successful tour across Adelaide, Sydney and Melbourne following their last release, ‘A Simple Fuck You’, the high-strung punk-rock revivalists have announced their latest single ahead of their anticipated debut EP.

‘Passive Tone’ starts with a melancholic acoustic guitar, arpeggiating chords that hint at the burst of resentment about to come. The punch of the drums pushes you away from the passive aggression and disdain from the people pulling you down. The track channels the discomfort and annoyance of being treated worthlessly into a punk march, helping you pull yourself up from your bootstraps. Nocturnal Animals give us some insight into the single:

“Passive Tone is about the feeling of someone not being able to say it to your face; they speak in a passive tone making you feel like you aren’t worth their time.”

These themes flow into the other five tracks on ‘Paint a Picture’, preparing the palette for the EPs release on November 4. ‘Paint a Picture’ builds on themes of navigating problematic relationships, tackling societal pressures and flying a middle finger to all the people who bag you behind your back.

Including their latest release, ‘A Simple Fuck You’, ‘Paint A Picture’ channels this energy throughout the EP with varying elements of Pop-punk, Punk-rock and careless vigour. Oozing with scathing energy, Nocturnal Animals explore the moments where you drop all your pent up anger and emotional investment and squash it into the cement with the heel of your Doc Martens.

Standing up to the weight of stresses and burden imposed by others in your life, Nocturnal Animals lend us some words about ‘Paint A Picture’:

“Paint A Picture is a fuck you with a smile! The emotions of letting go of all your cares and saying a simple fuck you to all the people that have given you grief with a passive tone. You will go through a musical journey through letters and pages from a diary that represent the feeling of coming into your own; walking with the confidence of not giving a shit whilst recognising underneath that you’re scared.”

Since their inception in 2019, Nocturnal Animals have already garnered the attention from notable radio stations Triple J, Triple J Unearthed, Radio Adelaide and many other community radio stations. Propelling the punk revival movement, staple punk media outlets Hysteria Mag, HEAVY Mag and Punktuation, alongside Scenestr, The Faction and Aus Music Scene.

Prime yourself for Nocturnal Animals’ ‘Passive Tone’ on the 7th of October and their debut EP, ‘Paint A Picture’ on November 4.

Dream Dali’s Releases Lead Single ‘Wandering’ And Announce’s Album ‘Letters From The Light’

Previous Support For Dream Dali

“This bombastic 80’s throwback has burrowed itself into my brain folds and will not leave,
and I wouldn’t ask it to.”

(Tone Deaf – Community Radio Top Picks) [About ‘Wicked Sunday’]

“Offering up a scintillating slice of dark-wave psychedelia, frontman Aldous Emerson’s bewitching vocals simmer above a driving dance-rock beat, whilst 80’s inspired guitar work swells throughout.” (MILKY)

“‘Dream Dali always deliver a psychedelic synapse thriller for the whole family.”
(Livewire AU) [About ‘Rosary’]

“Rosary is a dynamic tune that highlights Dream Dali’s talent of forward-thinking music creators.”
(AAA Backstage) [About ‘Rosary’]

“The track sees them take us on a tumbling fall down the rabbit hole, descending into a hollow, driving, darkwave wonderland.” (Music Feeds) [About ‘Little Lights’]

The Dream Dali sound blends reverbed guitars with droning synths and hypnotic drums into a modern blend of dark-wave psychedelia.” (Australian Musician)

“Stirring psych that gets better with each listen and had me marching on third go!”
4 / 5 (Declan Byrne, Triple J) [About ‘Rosary’]

“Not even Halloween and I’m proper spooked by this supernatural pumpkin.”
4 / 5 (Max Quinn, Triple J) [About ‘Rosary’]

Stream ‘Wandering’

Brisbane/Meanjin’s Dream Dali direct their dreamy darkwave energy into their new alt-rock single, ‘Wandering’ (October 7), ahead of their debut album ‘Letters From The Light’ set to drop on October 28.

Reinvigorating their momentum after their successful debut EP, Dream Dali released two singles this year, ‘Wicked Sunday’ and ‘Rosary’, setting the tone for what’s to come in this debut album.

The trio’s darkwave alt-rock has landed them a slot at BIGSOUND 2019 in their hometown and have come to the table with ‘Wandering’, the next offering from their debut album, ‘Letters From The Light’.

Renowned for their trance-inducing live performances, Dream Dali incorporate a holistic set of backdrop visuals, flashing white lights and noir-esque imagery which can be spotted in the accompanying art video for ‘Wandering’.

‘Wandering’ encompasses the feeling of being locked in a dark chasm of thoughts, but finding yourself working – picking the lock one pin at a time and pulling yourself out of its depths. Characterised by an illustrious beat and modulating synths, ‘Wandering’ creates a modern darkwave spin on British 80s club music by bringing alternative-rock bite and psychedelic delirium.

Dream Dali continue to expand on their imagery with another enticing art music video. By utilising hazy VHS-style filters and kaleidoscopic concepts, the trio convert their sonic art to the visual landscape.

Dream Dali’s Aldous Emerson provides insight into the inspirations for ‘Wandering’:

“I wanted to write a song floating the chords around the base line that was more energetic than past songs. Lyrically I wanted to explore how you can be in a dark place but still push through with perseverance, whilst also looking into what is contentment.”

From release to release, the band have seen growing support from the likes of Pilerats, Music Feeds, Tone Deaf, AAA Backstage, Australian Musician, Aus Music Scene and play on 4ZZZ, The Most (NZ), 2SER and many more.

Get lost amongst Dream Dali’s dreamy soundscape on October 7 with the release of ‘Wandering’ followed by the debut album ‘Letters From The Light’ on October 28.

Alana Jagt Takes Us On A Scenic, Soulful Journey With Debut Album ‘Goodbye Grote Bollen’

by the partae October 7, 2022
written by the partae

Stream ‘Goodbye Grote Bollen’

Alana Jagt delivers a bold blend of indie folk, rock and old-school Americana on her highly anticipated debut album ‘Goodbye Grote Bollen’ – out on 12″ vinyl and streaming services on October 7.

‘Goodbye Grote Bollen’ takes us on a personal journey via the handful of small towns that shaped Jagt’s upbringing. We’re driven down the dirt roads of Wangyarra in the Southern Flinders Ranges, invited to bask in the starry brilliance of Napperby skies, and to sleep over on a stormy evening in seaside Semaphore.

These vividly nostalgic tales measure out the evolution of Jagt’s sound, from early days on the periphery of the Tarndanya/Adelaide ‘Americana’ scene, to riveting folk-noir solo sets rendered in her signature bluesy husk, and – more recently – branching out and blossoming into carefree eclectic rock.

There’s been tragedy along the way: during the albums’s long gestation, the Jagt’s family home was destroyed in a fire. Sifting through mountains of cold black slush where the house used to be, Jagt discovered a charred and discoloured photograph, depicting a mysterious cake that bore the words ‘Goodbye Grote Bollen’.

“Turns out, my parents once worked in a tulip bulb sorting factory,” she says. “When their time at the factory ended, they brought a cake in to celebrate. Grote Bollen translates to ‘big bulbs’… there could be a Dutch pun happening there, I’m not exactly sure, but I eventually came to think of these songs as my bulbs and now I’m saying goodbye to them.”

On album opener ‘Stay in Bed’ Jagt surrenders to the comfort of a guilt-free sleep in, while her sunny harmonies fade into a dawn chorus. Jagt plays every instrument on this self-produced track.

Reality sets in on ‘If We Had Some Money’, a sauntering blues groove blown apart by a blistering electric guitar solo. Composed on a five-hour car trip and inspired by a Homer Simpson quote, it engages from beginning to anthemic end.

An unexpected turn brings us the gothic folk sea shanty ‘Darkness Lies’, articulating the human tendency to fear the unknown and paint darkness with the shadowiest corners of our imagination.

Jagt recalls faintly crashing waves from her Semaphore bedroom on ‘Imagining Life’, linking the drama of the raging sea outside with the personal upheaval and turmoil of moving house and finding a new life.

Side two opens with an intimate cover of ‘Sarah’ by one of Jagt’s favourite bands, Ween. Its gentle sway signals a change of pace, and David Blumberg of The Maraby Band turns in a sublime bass clarinet solo.

The band settles in for the New Orleans funeral shuffle of current single ‘Stars of Napperby’ on which Jagt’s powerful rasp leaves a lasting impact atop warped saloon guitars and ramshackle percussion.

The wistful waltz ‘In Some Dream’ has been a mainstay on Jagt’s setlists for years, but reveals its final form on this beautifully recorded version, much to her fans’ delight.

‘Stirred The Dirt’ highlights the lower registers of Jagt’s impressive vocal range to powerful effect. A slowly circling piano melody is pinned down by drawling drums, while lyrically it is reminiscing of growing up on Nukunu Country (SA).

‘Goodbye Grote Bollen’ reaches its poetic end with a mellow instrumental piece, reprising the string quartet section of ‘Imagining Life’. It’s been recreated for Mellotron (an old tape-driven keyboard) and brings the record back to the same homespun, lo-fi feel it began with.

Jagt and her band are eager to share the album with the world, saying “it’s a relief to finally put this record out there…because, as audiences will soon find out, we’ve got some pretty big new bulbs growing already”.

Touring Victoria and South Australia in October, Jagt and her band are bound to turn heads and charm ears. They’ve already garnered support from Triple J, Double J, Triple R, 4ZZZ, FBI, Radio Adelaide, Radio National and ABC Melbourne.

Previously, Jagt has played festivals such as Bigsound, Dashville Skyline, Folkloria and Bendigo Bluesfest; she’s embarked on national tours with Abbe May and The Roving Commission; supported beloved Australian artists including Paul Dempsey, Archie Roach, Thelma Plum, Aly Barter, Killing Heidi and Henry Wagons; and has even been invited to sing backup for artists as diverse as Kasey Chambers, Mick Thomas and Grinspoon’s Phil Jamieson.

Sweet Folk Duo Sunday Lemonade Share Their Fresh New Release ‘Runaway’

Stream ‘Runaway’

Melbourne’s feel-good folk duo Sunday Lemonade have been spreading their sunny musical storytelling around the country, and are set to do the same with their new single ‘Runaway’ out on October 7.

Touring around the country in a van together since joining forces in 2018 has seen Tyson and Loz spread their high-energy performances far and wide, winning over hearts everywhere they play. They’ve sold out two headline shows, and supported the likes of Daniel Champagne, Steph Strings, and The Pierce Brothers.

After quitting their jobs in 2019 to dedicate their time to music, the pair won the Emerging Artist Award in 2020 at their first festival appearance at Nannup Music Festival before getting caught in 4 months of lockdown. Since, they have been touring relentlessly and have released a number of singles.

Having just toured WA for the third time and recently releasing the single ‘See You Sometime’ in October, the pair are gearing up for more with this special new release, ‘Runaway’.

Already a crowd favourite at their gigs, the tune is an instantly uplifting, piece of heartfelt folk-rock. Focusing on the feelings of mutual but unresolved desire, ‘Runaway’ boasts a meandering guitar melody, steadied by a tricksy drumpad beat. The quiet moment before the final chorus draws the listener in, stirring vulnerable feelings before amping things up, elevating to cleverly mimic the feeling of heightened anxiety and building anticipation that happens when you begin to obsess over someone.

Speaking on the story behind the song, Sunday Lemonade explain:

“‘Runaway’ is a pop/folk story of reciprocated but unspoken lust, exploring the fascinating hints and moments with another human yet frustrating lack of courage to actually act on it. The fairy tale dream of what would happen if that person would hurry up and grab your hand, take you on an adventure and you’d finally have the chance to fall in love.”

The pair have already earned support from ABC Radio, Australian community radio and have been added to Triple M’s country rotation. In addition to this, their time busking has paid off, seeing the duo place 2nd in ‘Battle of the Buskers’, first in ‘Passport to Airlie’ which will see them head to the festival in November for the Grand Final.

Stay tuned for Sunday Lemonade’s new single release ‘Runaway’ on October 7. Then, catch them in November as they take to the stage for Vinehop Festival (VIC) headlined by The Bamboos and Ash Grunwald.
