Nicky Romero Joins Forces with NIIKO X SWAE For Nostalgic, Summer Dance-Pop Smash “Easy.” Out Now on Protocol Recordings

Title: Easy
Label: Protocol Recordings

Nicky Romero teamed up with American Los Angeles-based producers NIIKO X SWAE for their new track “Easy,” an upbeat and feel-good fusion of pop and dance music. With dynamic melodies and soulful vocals, the summer anthem brings to mind happy and simple times that will forever remain favorite memories. The release comes just after Romero launched his new venture – Protocol Lab sub-label on the 10th anniversary of Protocol Recordings, as well as his recent “Perception” EP. On the other hand, NIIKO X SWAE are hot off their “Save Me” single on Armada Music and earlier releases on Revealed, Warner Music, Hexagon, and Thrive Music.

“We connected a while back ago, and the guys sent me some music. ‘Easy‘ grabbed my attention immediately as it had these very positive vibes, giving me a feeling of happiness. They did amazing work already, but the original demo was a bit slower and needed some more tweaks. I took the stems back to my studio and spent some time on the production, reworking it. After going back and forth a few times with NIIKO X SWAE, ‘Easy‘ was done! We just played it together at my Academy show in Los Angeles on June 18, and we can’t wait to give it more spins and see how people react to it.” – Nicky Romero

“‘Easy‘ is an ode to the little things in life, like the laid-back summers we all experienced in our youth. Whether it’s carefree moments with your friends or cherishing a memory for the rest of your life, ‘Easy‘ is set to invoke a sense of nostalgia that takes you back to that special place in time. Working with Nicky has been a dream come true for us as he has always been one of our biggest inspirations since the day we started producing music. When we got back his version of ‘Easy,’ we knew we had a summer anthem on our hands, and we’re so excited for the world to hear it.” – NIIKO X SWAE

After taking the world by storm with early hits such as “Legacy” with Krewella and the #1 single “I Could Be The One” with Avicii, Nicky Romero quickly proved that his talent is ever-evolving and here to stay. After launching his Protocol Recordings imprint in 2012, the renowned performer, producer, and label head continued his personal successes with a string of high-profile releases, ranging from collaborations with Armin van Buuren, David Guetta, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, W&W, Timmy Trumpet and Steve Aoki to remixes for the likes of Robin Schulz, Kygo, Rita Ora, Steve Aoki, Martin Garrix, Jess Glynne and more. While showcasing his label’s roster via his weekly Protocol Radio show, Nicky Romero continues to innovate and evolve, and with his annual “Nicky Romero & Friends” ADE showcase and the launch of Monocule alter-ego, he keeps proving his ability to turn into gold everything he touches.

Childhood friends and LA-based duo NIIKO X SWAE spent their early days learning to produce and dreaming of pioneering a new lane in house music. Flash forward to today, they are regulars on dance radio, recently releasing their debut “Field Trip” EP on Armada Music and seeing two of the singles hit worldwide radio via Sirius XM‘s BPM, Evolution Radio, and more, with “I Ain’t Going Home” charting on the Billboard Dance Airplay Chart. In addition to their aggressive release schedule, the duo also hosts their own global radio show NXS Radio via Insomniac Radio. Furthermore, the Hakkasan Las Vegas residents have become a staple to any successful remix package, releasing remixes for Bebe Rexha, Charlotte Lawrence, Bryce Vine, Cheat Codes, and more. NIIKO X SWAE‘s remix of Bebe Rexha‘s “Sacrifice” has seen a multitude of success, topping 3M streams, earning a top spot on KIIS FM‘s “Top 20 Beats of the Week“, helping lead “Sacrifice” to #1 at dance radio. The guys have also been tapped for high-profile collaborations alongside Deorro, Kiiara, Adventure Club, and more.

Where are you currently based?

I am from a small town in eastern Connecticut!

How did you first start playing music?

I’ve been singing my whole life. I started writing songs around 10 years old and picked up instruments like piano or guitar around 17.

What’s been happening recently?

I’ve been working a lot on writing lately. I’ve been in a little bit of a writer’s block while writing for the next single, so it’s just been a lot of brainstorming until something sticks. I want to release something I’m proud of, so it has to be right.

Your latest single ‘Honey’ is out on July 1, what influenced the sound and songwriting?

Honey was mostly written because we wanted to write something fun after the last single,Tightrope. We were inspired by MUNA and the 1975 which I think really comes out in the synths. The storyline is pretty in your face with this one, no crazy metaphors or twists. Just a simple song about how it feels to hear your ex regrets leaving you. It’s a little flawed to admit, but it always feels great to know you’re missed.

How did you go about writing Honey?

I wrote Honey with Mackenzie Christensen, my producer. We started out by coming up with sounds and chords we liked. Initially we liked the idea of a “fake chorus” and thought it should have a little bit of sass to it. On my way home I started to come up with the story and by the time I parked I had most of the song written.

Where and when did you record/produce/master and who did you work with?

Since High & Low came out in 2021, I’ve worked with Mack on every release. We usually work together to plan out the structure of the song, unless we’re using one I’ve already written. After that I go home to put on a melody or lyrics to it, and he works his magic from there. He handles the mixing and mastering as well. We work really well together so we get together and talk or hang out while we try to add different instruments or sounds to make the songs feel complete and authentic. We record at his house most of the time.

How did you approach the recording process?

This process was pretty easy going. We had a lot of the melody and structure written in one day. The lyrics came within the next couple days and then it just took some trial and error to record the rest of the instruments.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

I tend to stick to a lot of 60s/70s music so it’s a little hard to break me from the classics. Lately it’s been Joni Mitchell or Paul Simon, but for current artists I’ve been admiring Harry Style’s new album or Carol Ades’ new single “26.”

What do you like to do away from music?

I really love to bake! I spend a lot of my free time doing that or binge watching TV shows. My favorite thing to bake is flavored cinnamon buns and the show I’m currently catching up on is Better Call Saul.

What’s planned for the remainder of 2022 going into 2023?

For the foreseeable future I’ll just be here releasing singles! I have two more planned for 2022. I hope to play out a lot more in 2023 so I’ll probably be preparing for that too.

Favourite food and place to hangout?

My favorite food is sushi! I could eat it every day. McDonald’s is my guilty pleasure though; gotta love those cheeseburgers. My favorite place to hang out is definitely my bed, but the drive in is pretty fun too.

Nick Carver & the Mean St Butchers Unleash Sophomore Album ‘ANIMALS’ Out July 1

Previous Support for Nick Carver & the Mean St Butchers

“It has a gorgeous dirty country blues feel to it, with big earthy guitars and rough-edged vocals. It’s foot-stomping, it’s a riot, yet comforting and personal.” (AU Review)

“The Way That You Walk is a smooth and moody piece that is rolling with bright keys, rolling brushed drums and Nick Carvers swoony vocal delivery.” (AAA Backstage)

“Searing soulful sludgy blues! That slide is getting a thrashing and sounds amazing. Love the brooding swamp this one’s rising up from. Unbeatable stompable rhythm.” [About ‘Two Legged Dog’] (Steph Hughes, Triple J)

“I’m glad I’m wearing boots while listening because I felt the intense need to stomp.”
[About ‘Two Legged Dog’] (Stacy Gougoulis, Triple J)

“Blow me down and let rip Nick! This is the kind of grit I can sunk my teeth into.”

Stream ‘ANIMALS’

Combining rough-edged rock and soulful blues with wallopping Americana folk roots, Nick Carver & the Mean Street Butchers are unleashing the beast with their eagerly anticipated sophomore album ‘ANIMALS’ – out July 1.

With outlandish singer-songwriter Nick Carver leading the charge, the Melbourne-based (Inverloch, VIC) rock/ roots outfit has been showcasing their class in the lead-up to this ultimate body of work, serving up singles ‘Two-Legged Dog’ and ‘The Way That You Walk’ earlier in the year.

Now, Nick Carver & the Mean Street Butchers are bringing it all together with an 8-track collection of artistically crafted tunes that reflect the band’s camaraderie, Nick’s home life and the long country drives where his inspiration is uninhibited, and his imagination is free to roam wild.

“The live vibe of four musicians smashing out live takes has always been at the heart of The Mean St Butchers,” Carver says.

“Lyrically, the album deals with the raising of my son, leaving my old city life, the beautiful ugliness of abandoned swamps, loss, love for music, love for my loved ones and a call to men to be decent fucking blokes.”

Opening with foot-stomping rock single ‘Two-Legged Dog’, there’s barely enough time to reach for the cowboy boots before heroic slide guitar solos and lightning strong riffs speak of the warmth of returning home.

Next, ‘Let Me Go’ emerges with a swinging rockabilly/ blues rhythm, washboard percussion and moody melodies, building up to an epic explosion of jamming instrumental prowess, representing a release of negativity and just letting it all go.

‘The Way That You Walk’ saunters in with dark keys, resonating drums and seductive bass, using ominous alt blues-folk with a psychedelic tinge to call out men who believe their words and actions have no consequence.

Then, ‘My Baby’s Eyes’ arrives as an ode to Nick’s son Teddy, using melancholic guitars and vulnerable vocals to convey the conflicting emotions of entering fatherhood, followed by ‘Slow Dance’, inspired by Nick’s love for The Stooges, delivering a raw, fuzz-fuelled blues-rock track that screams to be experienced live.

‘Pony’ saddles up on a steed of slow-burning blues, a pensive track about saying goodbye to a loved one, featuring intricate guitar techniques, before ‘Jimmy Wilson’ arrives as a serious bluesy ballad, acknowledging the unfairness of indigenous incarceration in our country.

Closing out the album is title track ‘Animals’, an epic six-minute alt-rock amalgamation of grunge and garage-rock elements, moving steadily with moody melodies before bursting apart with an instrumental epiphany in the form of an organ solo, uncovering the beauty one can find in a seemingly ugly and uncurated stretch of coastline.

The band’s previous releases have seen support from Triple J, Double J, Glide Mag, The AU Review, Countrytown, Beat, Scenestr, Amnplify, AAA Backstage and more, with the band also having performed at NYE on the Hill, Inverloch Sounds of Summer Festival and Folk Rhythm and Life Festival, as well as supporting artists like Ash Grunwald, Custard, The Fauves and The Tea Party.

Nick Carver & the Mean St Butcher’s sophomore album ‘ANIMALS’ is out on July 1 and they have a handful of shows upcoming. This includes a mini-festival in San Remo, AROCKALYPSE NOW, which they curated themselves to celebrate the launch of the album with friends Millar Jukes & the Muscle, Two Last Names and many more.
