The Grogans are touring June through to August 2022, heading around Australia and NZ.   This is the third single the band have released, Inside My Mind’ single takes the listener down a tantalizing, psychedelic path of solid greatness.   Keep an eye out for The Grogans, for you’ll be truly engulfed in their good vibrations.

Dance Amidst the Disarray of Self-Destructive Heartbreak with Killed by Cupid’s Debut Release, ‘Magic’

by the partae July 8, 2022
written by the partae

Stream ‘Magic’

Drawing on the nostalgia of early 2000s pop-punk and leaning heavily into wear-your-bleeding-heart-on-your-sleeve emo, Adelaide-based artist Killed by Cupid is ready to cause a stir on July 8 with their debut single ‘Magic’.

Previously fronting the since disbanded emo-punk rock outfit Memory Castles, this is a solo project from Jesse Cumes, and he is definitely not holding back. With one checkered Vans sneaker in the pop-punk lane and a Doc Marten boot confidently stomping into hyper-pop territory, Killed By Cupid lands in the sore spot right between the pieces of your broken heart, but encourages you to give in to the pain and dance amidst the disarray.

‘Magic’ is a glorious gut-punch of heartache and self-destruction. The content navigates angsty breakup feels with a bright flare and is sugar-coated in autotuned vocals that buzz through, inevitably crashing over a steady trap beat. The percussive and punchy melody races forward in a headspin and bursts with a familiar ‘whoa’, thrusting you into the cathartic high of a singalong chorus. Echoes of nostalgic throwbacks to Metro Station and Yellowcard effortlessly intersect with more current influences of Waterparks, lil aaron and Oliver Tree, and to fun effect.

Drawing from raw feelings about post-breakup self-loathing and idealising an ex, Cumes explains:

“‘Magic’ is a song essentially documenting the period of spiralling and general lack of self-care that ensued after a breakup which left me temporarily an utter mess.”

Killed by Cupid’s single ‘Magic’ is out on July 8 and will be performing at the launch party on July 22nd at Adelaide Unibar.

Come Home To Joan & The Giants’ New Single ‘Home Song’ Out July 8

Previous Support For Joan & The Giants

‘Slow Motion’ in AMRAP Metro Charts 4 Weeks Running

“Joan & The Giants, have a knack for writing songs that pull at the heartstrings” (AU Review)

“With this tidal flow and cloudy mood, I’m moved gently but noticeably by this new Joan & The Giants one.”
4 / 5 (Declan Byrne, Triple J)

“Poignant, heartfelt, and achingly raw”
(Scenestr) [About ‘Just For You’]

“Another impressive one for 2021 from Joan & The Giants. They’ve zeroed in on an emotional centre point like a professional dart player throwing bullseyes at your heart.”
4 / 5 (Dave Ruby Howe, Triple J) [About ‘Just For You’]

Stream ‘Home Song’

Bringing swirling alt-pop soundscapes to life with heartfelt lyricism delivered using beautiful emotional clarity, Perth-based band Joan & The Giants are unveiling their newest single ‘Home Song’ on July 8.

Their second single of the year behind enamouring release ‘Slow Motion’, Joan & The Giants are continuing to impress with their stirring brand of alternative pop that arrives soaked in glistening melodies and raw emotional epiphanies.

With partners and longtime collaborators, Grace Newton-Wordsworth and Aaron Birch at the helm, Joan & The Giant’s music is often inspired by personal experiences shared within a loving relationship, which is the key focus of their new single ‘Home Song’.

Written as love letter to Aaron during an incredibly difficult period of loss, ‘Home Song’ swoons with a delicate warmth as gentle acoustic guitar melodies combine with heartbeat percussion and sweet, soulful vocals. Then, the chorus opens up in a celebration of love with big drums and intricate synth notes, melding folksy guitar strumming with an epic vocal release.

Radiating with an overwhelming feeling of love, ‘Home Song’ puts everything into perspective, acting as a reminder not to take anything for granted, as Grace reflects:

“‘Home Song’ was written on a Sunday in June 202I. Aaron and I had a pointless fight over nothing (probably the dishes), then he saw all of these missed calls on his phone and found out his grandma was seriously ill and he needed to fly to Broome immediately to say goodbye.”

“When he flew away, it put everything into perspective and I just wanted to take the pain from his chest and hold it for a while. It taught me to not take anything for granted, and to hold the people you love close… So this song is for Aaron, my home.”

Since their debut, Joan & The Giants have been nominated in three separate categories of the prestigious International Songwriting Competition 2021 alongside Missy Higgins, Eskimo Joe and more, headlined the Shinju Matsuri Festival, supported Odette on the WA leg of her 2019 ‘Lotus Eaters’ tour and performed at Nannup Music Festival 2021. The band has seen support from Triple J, Scenestr, AU Review, AAA Backstage, Aus Music Scene and heap of community radio.

Feel at home with Joan & The Giants’ new single ‘Home Song’, out on July 8.

Paces opens up about some seriously hard times on new single Adrift

by the partae July 8, 2022
written by the partae

What would you do if you were living the dream and your career was halted by a global catastrophe, you suddenly found yourself a single parent and your existing anxiety & depression boiled over to a point where you were left bed ridden? The past couple of years have been hard for a lot of us but the infamously cheerful producer Paces (Mikey Perry) has had quite the run.  “I was struggling to do simple things like go to a grocery store or drive my car without having anxiety attacks. I was spiraling every day and despite exercising regularly, meditating, doing yoga, going to therapy every week, journaling, etc, it just kept getting worse.”  The tendency to think that if we just do all the right things it’ll get better, is strong with so many of us. “Eventually my physical health declined and for a few months I barely had the strength to cook for myself. I had to sleep through most of the days and I wasn’t able to look after my son (who is my whole world). I was at rock bottom. At that point, I relented and started taking antidepressants. They helped with the anxiety a lot and gave me a foothold to start climbing out of the pit I was in.”

Mikey then found headroom to start creating again. An experimental but authentic combination of sounds started to emerge. The future bass/hyper-pop sound we’ve loved Paces for started merging with Mikey’s lifelong passion for raw and emotive punk music. “The songwriting turned out to be a positive goal to focus on, so I kept chipping away at it and eventually ended up with a handful of new songs, out of this really crap part of my life.” Another barrier to fall ment that for the first time Mikey put his own voice into the microphone. ”I’m not a singer, I’ve never been a singer, but I sing on these songs because they’re too personal to have had anyone else do it.” A new freedom came with starting from scratch. No momentum, a new sound and his own label to release under. “It’s been super cathartic. At the moment I kind of feel like nothing matters, which has been a refreshing headspace to make music from.” The first single to emerge is the stirring Adrift. A skate-punk bass riff sets the pace before warped electronic drums open up for the chorus. The track ultimately, apexes in a big rock moment when the drum kit kicks in and the mosh pit vibes take over. Armed with his new “hyper-punk’ sound and a renewed energy Paces has found reasons to make noise again: “I’m sad, so now I sing.”

JEREMY LOOPS collaborates with ED SHEERAN & LADYSMITH BLACK MAMBAZO for brand new record ‘HEARD YOU GOT LOVE’ out today. LEAD SINGLE ‘HEAD START’ ALSO OUT TODAY

by the partae July 8, 2022
written by the partae

South African artist Jeremy Loops has played some of the world’s most prestigious venues – including a sell-out headline Brixton Academy show here in the UK – with his high-energy music, amassing over 250 million global streams, and growing. Today he releases his long-awaited third album, ‘Heard You Got Love’, a record of head-bopping anthems perfect for sunny days.

Also released today is Jeremy’s feel good, laid back and hooky single ‘Head Start’, produced by the prolific Red Triangle (Camilla Cabella, Charlie Puth, Yungblud), co-written by Wayne Hector (Nicki Minaj’s ‘Starships’) and featuring Jeremy’s easing voice and effortless guitar.

This follows his previous single ‘Better Together’ which was co-written with none other than Ed Sheeran. After meeting backstage at a show in South Africa, the pair hit it off – with Ed even joking that Jeremy was a better ‘loop’ artist than him – and decided to work together.

The first single from this album was written and recorded with one of Jeremy’s life-long influences, the iconic, world-renowned, South African vocal group Ladysmith Black Mambazo. The group formed in the 1960s to create traditional world music with energetic, uniquely spirited harmonies, and here their distinctive style fits perfectly with Jeremy’s sound. Ladysmith Black Mambazo’s celebrated career was followed by a young Jeremy who was brought to tears after first seeing them live. To collaborate on this album was a dream come true.

Jeremy is a self-taught musician who picked up his first guitar at university. As his love for writing songs grew, the South African penned melodies while working aboard superyachts, where he worked his way up from deckhand to yacht master. Obsessed with squeezing music into every day on shore and evening on deck, Jeremy’s trusty loop pedal followed him around his tour of the seas.

Whilst working closely with the water, Jeremy was shocked to see the volume of waste in the industry. It is this experience that fuelled one of his many initiatives, Greenpop, the eco-project that has filled 400 green-free spaces with over 150,000 trees. As his career quickly developed, Jeremy has worked hard to offset any carbon emissions from touring and constantly puts social responsibility at the forefront of his movements. The long-time activist founded The Big Food Drive to deliver food supplies to some of the poorest communities in South Africa. The crowd-funded campaign has built a food distribution network with other partners that contributed towards 55,000 meals per week for 6 months for those in need.

Jeremy has carefully merged these values into each corner of his latest record. He says, “This is the album I’ve always wanted to make and my hope is that some of the things I’ve written about will mean as much to others as they do to me. Every song speaks to something I care deeply about.”

The album ‘Heard You Got Love’ allowed Jeremy to explore more technical aspects of recording than he has previously. The record came to life in Jeremy’s home studio in between daily dips in the ocean. He collaborated with world-renowned artists such as Simone Felice (The Lumineers), Jake Gosling (Shawn Mendes), Tobias Kuhn (Milky Chance) and Carey Willets (Dermot Kennedy). He also brought on a fleet of high-end producers for the album, including Ed Holloway (Lewis Capaldi), Eg White (Adele) and Cam Blackwood (George Ezra).

Jeremy will set sail around the globe once again this year for his extensive 2022 tour, stopping at Glasgow, Dublin and Manchester before embarking upon a string of dates at European cities and closing the run at London’s Eventim Apollo (Hammersmith) on 6th October (Full Tour Dates HERE)

PARKWAY DRIVE ANNOUNCE NEW ALBUM DARKER STILL + SHARE NEW VIDEO “THE GREATEST FEAR”

by the partae July 7, 2022
written by the partae

NEW ALBUM ARRIVES SEPTEMBER 9 VIA
PARKWAY RECORDS

Australian metal juggernauts PARKWAY DRIVE — Winston McCall (vocals), Luke Kilpatrick (guitar), Jeff Ling (guitar), Jia O’Connor (bass), and Ben Gordon (drums) — are pleased to announce their seventh album, Darker Still. The record, which is the first full-length since their #1 Gold-certified album, Reverence (2018), arrives on September 9 via Parkway Records. Darker Still can be pre-ordered here.

Parkway Drive have also shared the masterfully cinematic video for “The Greatest Fear” which features the band’s galloping guitar work, moshy breakdowns, and guttural vocals amidst a stunning backdrop that will transport you elsewhere.

WATCH: PARKWAY DRIVE – “THE GREATEST FEAR”

“The greatest fear, the one we all share; this song is about the unifying force we all must face —death,” says McCall. “The goal was to create a song that saw death not as something that separates, but something that connects us all on our paths. Musically, we wanted to create a song that did this concept justice. It’s heavy, it’s epic and when it stomps it leaves an impact.”

“The Greatest Fear” follows the release of the video for “Glitch” a frenetic exploration of the things our mind experience when we are not awake — but not yet asleep — such as night terrors and sleep paralysis.

ABOUT PARKWAY DRIVE + DARKER STILL:

In the kitchen of the Byron Bay home of Winston McCall stands a refrigerator, adorned on one side by a quote from Tom Waits: “I want beautiful melodies telling me terrible things”.

This, the Parkway Drive vocalist says, is a pretty good summation of himself. It holds true, too, as one of the guiding principles behind Darker Still, the seventh full-length album to be born of this picturesque and serene corner of north-eastern NSW, Australia, and the defining musical statement to date from one of modern metal’s most revered bands.

Darker Still, McCall says, is the vision he and his bandmates have held in their mind’s eye since a misfit group of friends first convened in their parents’ basements and backyards in 2003. The journey to reach this moment has seen Parkway evolve from metal underdogs to festival-headlining behemoth, off the back of close to 20 gruelling years, six critically and commercially acclaimed studio albums (all of which achieving Gold status in their home nation), three documentaries, one live album, and many, many thousands of shows.

“When Parkway originally started out, we all were trying to push ourselves to do more than we possibly could,” is how McCall explains it. “What you hear on Darker Still is the final fulfillment of our ability to learn and grow catching up with the imagination that we have always had.”

To understand that growth is to understand Darker Still, both musically and thematically. Those who thought they had Parkway Drive figured out — the unrivaled energy, the high-octane breakdowns, McCall’s trademark bark — need reconsider everything they know about Australia’s masters of heavy. Darker Still stands as the culmination of a transformative time that has seen Parkway reach new heights of creativity and success by eschewing the restrictive, safe conventions of genre and abandoning their own self-imposed rules in favor of a wide-eyed appreciation of bold new horizons. “There are compositions and songs that we’d never attempted before – or, to be more accurate, which we have attempted in the past, but not had the courage, time or understanding to pull off,” McCall reveals.

And so while Darker Still remains irrefutably Parkway Drive, it finds the band sonically standing shoulder to shoulder with rock and metal’s greats — Metallica, Pantera, Machine Head, Guns N’ Roses – as much as it does their metalcore contemporaries. The album explores the concept of the “dark night of the soul” which is “the idea of reaching a point in your life where you are faced with a reckoning of your structure of beliefs, your sense of self and your place in the world, to a point where it’s irreconcilable with the way that you are as a person,” as McCall describes. Darker Still unfurls like the great rock concept albums, from Pink Floyd to, most comparably, Nine Inch Nails‘ The Downward Spiral, its 11 tracks taking in ruminations on society’s fear of death, isolation and a loss of humanity in its journey to redemptive enlightenment.

This is the Parkway Drive the band have been striving to be for two decades. Guitarist Jeff Ling says it best: “I’m really proud of what we have achieved together, and feel that as musicians, we have really ascended to new realms of class and ability.”

Emerging from the darkness of the past few years, this is the true face of Parkway —redefined and resolute, focused in mind and defiant in spirit.

BEF will also be the new home of Splendour’s Drop Off / Pick Up and Park n Ride where you’ll then catch a shuttle to the festival. A friendly reminder that BEF campers and those utilising Drop Off / Pick Up & Park n Ride must pre-purchase a bus ticket online before boarding.

You so prepared!

Splendour has received word that sadly Surfaces, Mako Road and Adrian Eagle are no longer able to make it to the festival. In light of this, irrepressible Fremantle five piece Pond and rapper on the rise Tasman Keith have been added to the lineup!

From their standout Splendour performance in 2019 to touring with the likes of Arctic Monkeys, MGMT and Flaming Lips, Pond’s live resume is ever-expanding and has seen them stun crowds at festivals around the world including Glastonbury, Coachella, Primavera and more. They’ve sold out countless venues around the globe from New York’s Bowery Ballroom to Paris’ La Gaite Lyrique and London’s O2 Forum. Their growing catalogue includes nine studio albums. The latest of which, 9, has them flying closer than ever before to the creative supernova that has blazed across so much of their music. Don’t miss what is sure to be one of the weekend’s highlight performances when Pond play the Amphitheatre on Sunday 24 July.

Tasman Keith is a rapper determined to use his platform as an unstoppable, undeniable voice for the voiceless. From syrupy 90s West Coast synths, to neo-funk, skittering trap hi-hats and emotive R&B, his music defies categorisation and has garnered praise from the likes of Billboard, Rolling Stone, NME, triple j, Spotify, Apple and more. Tasman collaborated with Midnight Oil on their release ‘First Nation’ appearing on the #1 ARIA Award Winning record The Makaratta Project and has performed on ABC music shows The Sound and The Set. He most recently played an intimate set live at triple j studios in celebration of NAIDOC Week. Tasman’s highly anticipated debut album A Colour Undone drops 8 July and is this week’s triple j Feature Album, featuring collaborations with Genesis Owusu, Jessica Mauboy, Kwame, Phil Fresh & Thandi Phoenix.  Catch his incredible showmanship when he opens the Mix Up stage on Saturday 23 July.

Splendour is a big weekend and it’s important to schedule in some R&R time. Grab a coffee and sit back with Splendour’s official newspaper. Splendour’s official onsite paper published by the legends at Monster Children is back, only now it’s one big newspaper instead of three. Also, they’ve renamed it: The Splendour Weekender. It rhymes! The 2022 Splendour Weekender features interviews with a bunch of artists from the lineup,  along with that bloke from Redfern Electrical. Then there’s a big poster in the middle by artist Adam Leng, a food guide, an art guide, some funny classifieds, a weekend horoscope from Bertrand Starman, and a bunch of other fun stuff. Keep your eyes peeled for it!

The final few weeks of Splendour countdown got you feeling the festival FOMO? Never fear, there are a limited number of pre-loved tickets currently available in the Splendour resale. Jump on and purchase now so you can be there for one all time weekend of live music and so much more. We can already taste the Strummers!

SYDNEY ARTIST ANIESZKA INJECTS SOUL AND CULTURE INTO NEW SINGLE ‘HUMAN’ FROM FORTHCOMING EP PROJECT HUMAN

by the partae July 6, 2022
written by the partae

The way Sydney R&B artist Anieszka has emerged as a stunning presence in the past year and a half has been nothing short of impressive. Her music, an effortless blend of striking influences and a fresh, contemporary view on the genre; Anieszka has been consistently building a body of work that reflects the sound and culture that has raised her, as well as reflecting the passionate approach she brings to her writing now.

New single ‘Human’ is the latest from Anieszka and the lead single from her forthcoming EP project of the same name. A love letter to the personal facets that make us who we are as individuals and interconnected beings, ‘Human’ is a captivating creation from the young artist, who has already been impressing fans and industry alike with a string of recent releases including ‘Motive’, ‘Tender Without You’ and ‘Choices’

‘Human’ has a dreamlike haze to it, threaded through it we hear Anieszka’s hypnotic vocals and elements of her Mauritian culture in a beautiful way. Working on the music at Offbeat Collective Studios with producer and fellow artist Chelsea Warner, and engineer Diego Raposo on mixing and mastering, Anieszka describes the process and final outcome as one she was fulfilled and excited by.

“I have wanted to incorporate traditional Mauritian elements into my music for years, and when I started writing this one I knew Chelsea Warner had to be part of the creating process. I wanted the ravanne (traditional Mauritian drum) to be at the core of the song, and to almost be a never-ending rhythm, kind of like a heartbeat. We also have the maravanne (also known as a kayamb) which is a traditional percussion instrument, and the triangle. This trio forms the basis for Mauritian Sega music.

I’ve never heard a fluid blend of R&B/Soul with a traditional Mauritian beat, and I wanted to be the first to do it. I’m excited for people to learn more about my culture, and to connect with the song on a pure human level too.”

ANIESZKA

On the track itself, and further to the EP, Anieszka explores the nuances and complexities of the human condition. The pressure we put on ourselves to be at our best form at all times, with little to no room for breathing and alleviation.

“We are imperfect beings, yet we often focus so much on the need to be perfect and something other than who we are. The ways of the world and society often dim the light we have within us. This song speaks to that inner child, and the innocence and hope we all once had. It’s an anthem to step into our light and our power, and to practice self-acceptance, self-love and healing along the way. ‘Can you see through my flaws? I am human but whole’ – we all have flaws, but they don’t make us broken or incomplete, they are simply layers to a whole being.”

ANIESZKA

The road to the HUMAN EP project has already been paved with success and moments of evolution and elevation for Anieszka. She has received praise and placements across national radio through Triple J First Plays and Unearthed premieres, BBC Radio and Rinse FM; while FBi Radio has named Anieszka as ‘Independent Artist of the Week’. Anieszka’s music has courted playlist success with both Spotify and Apple Music, while editorially, she has been featured across titles including Acclaim Mag, RUSSH, Life Without Andy, Pilerats, Purple Sneakers and more.

With over 9000 monthly streams and notable shows at The Vanguard and King St. Carnival to her name, Anieszka is set for another fruitful year of new music and anticipates more new fans getting to know her through this music: reflective of her pure love for the craft.

PRAISE FOR ANIESZKA

“Her powers of sonic healing knows no bounds…”

Life Without Andy

“Another slice from Anieszka that glides into the room and makes it all look so easy.”

Triple J, Declan Byrne

“The Australian/Mauritian singer channels the same cathartic energy as US heavyweights like Summer Walker and SZA, tunneling into the healing properties of low-slung R&B and giving them a rich, Australian twist that sets herself apart.”

Pilerats

“Anieszka dives deep with her lyricism, creating an evocative experience, intertwining our mind and body.”

Black Veil Brides @ The Croxton Bandroom, 3rd July 2022

by the partae July 5, 2022
written by the partae

Photography & Words: Darren Chan

After a series of rescheduled dates, Californian metalcore outfit Black Veil Brides finally made it to Australia. The second show of the day at the Croxton Bandroom saw the venue full of eager fans.

And the band more than delivered. It was a sledgehammer wall of sound from the opening chugging riff of “Faithless”.  This was not a show if you wanted to hear ballads. It was back to back bangers including  “Coffin”, “Rebel Love Song”, the crowd-chanting “Wake Up” and their US radio hit “Scarlett Cross” which had the crowd fist pumping.

The synergy between guitarists Jake Pitts and Jinxx was evident with wicked solos, Iron Maiden-ish dual harmonies such as during  “All Your Hate” and “Knives and Pens”. Christian Coma on drums maintained the intensity and energy, highlighted in the double-kicking “The Legacy”, all while Lonny Eagleton solidly laying the rhythm backbone on bass. Frontman Andy Brierack’s demonstrated his singing versatility from holding melody to high intensity screaming.

Black Veil Brides finished the night with a deep cut “In the End” that left the crowd wanting more. They delivered tight, highly polished performance evidently forged by developing their craft over a number of years.

Nick Tesar from Bar Liberty in Melbourne has been crowned Diageo World Class Australian Bartender of the Year for 2022 and will represent Australia in the Global Finals being held in Sydney this coming September.

Nick Tesar at the Diageo World Class National Finals in Sydney

Tuesday, 5 July, 2022 – This week, Australia’s top five bartenders battled it out in Sydney to take home the title of Australia’s best bartender and a coveted place in the World Class Global Finals in September, with Nick Tesar from Bar Liberty in Melbourne taking the top spot at the final round of the competition last night.

Following multiple cocktail challenges at Sydney’s Shell House Tesar took the win from fellow top five finalists Samuel Cocks (Bar Rogue, WA), Sarah Proietti (Maybe Sammy, NSW), Eduardo Conde (No.92 GPR, NSW) and Kayla Saito (Black Pearl, VIC)

Going head-to-head across three rounds, the competitors battled it out with three whisky-focused challenges – ‘The Icons of Sydney’ featuring Johnnie Walker Blue Label, the ‘Speed Round’ featuring brands from the Diageo Reserve portfolio, and ‘Into The Wild Mystery Box’ featuring Talisker – each round testing the finalists’ skills, creativity and speed.

Tesar expertly crafted a collection of superb cocktails proving too tough to beat including a cumquat cocktail inspired by local produce for the first Talisker challenge ‘into the wild box’. He went on to whip up an impressive 12 cocktails in the space of 5 minutes during the final speed round – almost double that of the other contestants.

He says of the win, “Competing in the Diageo World Class Australian Bartender competition this year has been such an incredible experience. I am incredibly grateful to be part of a this tight knit hospitality community and am proud of being able to represent Australia on the global stage this September. Bring on the finals!”

Based in Melbourne, Tesar is a bartender at Bar Liberty who loves to champion local produce. He is part of the team behind Marionette Liqueurs, who work with local farmers to produce an array of cocktail liqueurs. He is also co-author of the book ‘All Day Cocktails’, that looks at utilising seasonal produce in no and low alcohol drinks.

Tesar will now compete in the Diageo World Class global final which will be held in Australia for the first time in the competition’s history,  9th – 18th September. He will join 55 other global finalists from countries including the United States, Canada, Italy, and the United Kingdom, who will touch down in Sydney to represent their nation and battle it out for the coveted title of World Class Global Bartender of the Year.

Krystal Hart, Australia’s World Class Ambassador, added, “Each year I am blown away by the sheer talent from the competitors entering World Class, and this year was no different. The 2022 competition has revealed some incredibly exciting talent with cocktails championing sustainability, driving awareness when it comes to supporting local communities.

All five of the finalists gave it their all, but there could be only one Australian World Class Bartender of the Year. I’m so excited to see Nick Tesar represent Australia in the global finals and show the world what we are made of!”

This year, Australia will not only host the World Class Global Finals, but Sydney will be home to the 2022 World Class Cocktail Festival, a week-long celebration spotlighting the very best of Australia’s bustling bar scene.

From 9th – 18th September, The Rocks and surrounding areas including Surry Hills, Bondi and Sydney’s CBD will come to life as some of the nation’s best bars and restaurants curate the most unique and immersive food and drink experiences. GIGEE

by the partae July 4, 2022
written by the partae

Hi GIGEE, thank you for joining us! How’s life for you right now?

Heeeey there! Thank you for having me 🙂

Excellent! Excited to be back on tour, loads of new music coming out, and my family and friends are safe and in a good shape. Life is good 🙂

You had multiple different interests in your upbringing and decided on a career in music. Was this a tough decision as a youngster?

As a child, I used to have a highway of ideas, that is very true. A blessing and a curse at the very same time. Although, music has always been a major part of my life since I can remember…. I always had the best tapes, vinyls, or CDs that everyone wanted to borrow from me haha, but as a kid, I was also very into sports, especially tennis and football. I was taking football seriously in particular, but due to a nasty injury the professional career obviously never happened, and you’d never guess I had anything in common with the sport before! So I guess I’m in the right place, and I don’t regret the path I’ve chosen. This is my passion, this is my destiny and I couldn’t love it more.

What challenges did you face when you began your career as a DJ/Producer and what was the ‘breakthrough’ moment for you?

Well, when I made my first track around 2011 I didn’t take it seriously (I still have it some place on my computer but I’m afraid to listen hehe). I’m harsh on myself and always strive to improve, even when it’s not needed. So it took me a while to really believe in myself and start to realise that I’m capable of making it in the music industry. Back in the days, It was more of a place for my innermost fantasies but somehow I managed to get myself together and try…then I tried once again and again and again, and after few years, after many rejections, self-doubts and more to eventually end up in the place where I am now. I would say it’s rather a process of cultivating the „get up and try again” attitude rather than a single breakthrough.

You’ve enjoyed excellent releases on the likes of Mobilee & Katermukke recently, two imprints who have consistently supported you. How did these relationships come about and what makes a great artist/label relationship?

Yes, I will be eternally grateful for their support. We started as strangers, and music brought us together, but I strongly believe there is no such thing as coincidence. After a few years of collaboration and getting to know each other, our relationship began to evolve in a variety of creative directions. I recently joined Kater’s in-house agency for the GSA region and couldn’t be more thrilled about our long term plans, not to mention mutual trust, respect, and unwavering support. All of that makes it feel like a second family:)

How do you feel your sound is evolving as you progress in your music career?

Electronic music is a hell of a sound spectrum. Not sure which moment should I call the „beginning of GIGEE sound” because I constantly have lots of new ideas that I tend to implement into new releases but maybe that is the way we should put it. I finally started to feel confident and happy with my studio work, my approach, and sound designing. Still experimenting but not too much as I now know where to put a dot and where my signature is. This is exciting but it was also a process that didn’t come overnight.

Who are some of your favourite music artists currently?

I still keep in mind my teenage time gurus, such as Paul Kalkbrenner, Carl Cox, David Guetta, Avicii and Vitalic, but I’ve learned to find inspiration in many different aspects of being a musician. There are so many new talents nowadays with astounding sound and strong personalities that it would be a shame not to acknowledge them. For example, I admire how Charlotte de Witte has evolved over the years. I am a huge fan of Joris Voorn’s sound, and I am constantly moved by Ben Bohmer’s melodies…

You’ve had some huge support across the music industry, including some recent BBC Radio 1 plays in the UK, have you had time to reflect on your success’?

Thank you! I’m really gratefull for this awesome feedback, that’s true. I had a wonderful dinner with my closest ones to celebrate the recent happenings  but there is still a lot of work to be done, and I choose to prioritize that. Hopefully there will be a time to fully raise the glass soon 🙂

You also enjoyed your US debut in Los Angeles last month, how exciting was this and are there any other countries you hope to play at in the future?

Los Angeles and California in general hold a special place in my heart, so this was a highly emotional and extraordinary experience. Luckily I’m coming back in July for two gigs with The Fluffy Cloud – Burning Man crew, the first one in LA, the second one in San Diego. Should I mention that I caaaaaan’t wait for this? 😀

My bucketlist with spots and venues that I admire is constantly getting bigger and bigger. We don’t even have enough wine to start this conversation hahah :)))

What would you say has been the proudest moment of your musical career so far?

It’s hard to pick only one but I would say that I’m the most proud of being consistent and moving forward every year. Thinking about where I was 5 years ago and where I am now is motivating me to keep working and pushing my boundaries every day.

What else is coming up for GIGEE in the rest of 2022?

Hopefully busy touring schedule till the end of the year and I’m currently working on a new EP for one of my music mentors; I can’t announce it yet, but we expect to release it this fall. Then I’ll be doing few remixes for a well established label, but I’ll have to keep that a secret for a while as well – BUT – you’ll be the first to know:)

Emo rockers Vermont deliver spellbinding new single ‘Numb’

by the partae July 4, 2022
written by the partae

Melbourne emo rockers Vermont have revealed the next instalment from their forthcoming sophomore EP ‘Mature Minds For Overzealous Kids’ out Friday July 15 by-way-of new single, “Numb.”

The melancholic ballad is poised to leave listeners spellbound as vocalist Joshua Swanwick delivers his most emotive performance to date. Heart-on-sleeve lyricism transmits pained emotion and serves as the raw nucleus of “Numb”.

All musical sections, from the huge choruses with empowering leads, to stripped-back ambient verses serve to deliver the powerful feeling behind the lyrics. These elements are enhanced by mammoth production from Ocean Grove’s Sam Bassal, who produced, mixed and mastered the track.

“Choosing the third single off this EP involved a lot of back and forth between a few of our tracks,” reveals the band. “Ultimately though, Numb won out as it’s just that little bit different to the rest. The addition of the cheeky lil’ guitar solo in the bridge was a nice touch. Big thanks to Sam for pushing the idea during the production and for making the track as huge as it is.”

Hailing from Melbourne’s West, four-piece melodic alt rock outfit Vermont is comprised of members Joshua Swanwick (Vocals), Jono Hnatejko (guitar), Nathan Borg (Bass) and Curtly Lyon (Drums). Vermont emerged with their own brand of alternative rock in 2017 when they debuted with “Lonely Mind” and shortly after followed it up with their heart-wrenching melodic anthem “Breathe” in 2018.

Since releasing their self-titled debut EP in 2020, Vermont have been unwavering in their taste for catchy chorus hooks, angsty, powerful vocals and sweet lead lines. Since then the four-piece have cut their teeth live supporting the likes of Stuck Out, Stepson, Pridelands, Rumours, Reside, The Comfort and Sleep Talk.

Their last single, “Headlights” was added to Spotify’s ‘Rock Out’ and ‘Homegrown + Heavy,’ playlists with triple j Unearthed’s Dave Ruby Howe describing the song as, “Potent! Vermont unlocked something visceral on this one.”

One thing is for sure, Vermont never fail to capture an aura of emotion and sentiment through their ability to story-tell. “Numb” is the third single from the extended play, ‘Mature Minds For Overzealous Kids‘ out on July 15, pre-order’s live here.
