DIVERS’ NEW EP ‘THE SENSORY EDITION’ IS OUT NOW + WATCH THE NEW MUSIC VIDEO FOR ‘FEED ME’ + MELBOURNE EP LAUNCH SHOW GOES DOWN NEXT WEEK

by the partae March 8, 2022
written by the partae
PRAISE FOR DIVERS:
“A high-energy slice of guitar driven goodness with passionate and powerful vocals.”
– Pilerats“Imagine DMAs with their soaring indie rock but now imagine that sound all mussed up with anger and more grit. That’s what I’m hearing from Divers on this new one.”
– Dave Ruby Howe, triple j Unearthed

“…Divers splash around, careering in different directions, keeping you on your toes with this exciting new one. I’m addicted!”
– Declan Byrne, triple j Home & Hosed

“There’s some bands you just get a good feeling from. Divers are home grown, easy-going but highly motivated young guys with an ear for catchy melodies, homespun lyrics and a passion for the sound they’re creating.”
– How Good Melbourne

Rising Melbourne indie-rock, psych and experimental-infused outfit Divers have released their new EP The Sensory Edition in full today.

Out via their new label home Domestic La La, the EP is lead by recent single in ‘Feed Me’, which first premiered via triple j Unearthed and has since garnered high praise from triple j staff and music media (including the likes of Pilerats and Hysteria) and become the band’s top performing track.

To celebrate the EP, Divers will play a hometown launch show at The Gaso next Saturday March 12, supported by The Paddy Cakes + Lily Rose (tickets here) and have also unleashed a music video for ‘Feed Me’ today.

“The video concept for ‘Feed Me’ ties in with the lyrical themes of the song, specifically on how technology can occasionally send you into a spiral of madness,” says the band.

“We spent a very hungover Sunday with Schoondie (Ben Schoonderbeek, collaborator) busting this one out, with added time constraints as Ben and Scotty declared they were going straight edge and were heading off to a 6-week yoga retreat in India the following day.”

Aptly named, Divers aim to take hold of the listener’s complete sensory experience on The Sensory Edition, guiding listeners to feel something beyond just aurally listening to the music. The songs themselves are designed to transport the listener out of their day-to-day grind and into the world of Divers through etherial synths and aspirational melodies. Ultimately, The Sensory Edition is a multi-faceted experience designed for complete sensory overload.

On the EP, Divers add: “The Sensory Edition was written and recorded during that brutal 3-4 month winter lockdown in 2020. We pretty much filled our days by sitting down on synthesizers running through pedalboards and going for walks. The Sensory Edition focuses pretty heavily on wiggy sounds which kicked off the idea for the title and overarching theme of the EP. There is also an element of wanting to get away from reality in this EP. We believe that the variety of sounds in these songs would play a large role in the EP, so we spent more time than usual dialling in sounds that would create a vibe/mood for each song. We attempted to create an all-in sensory over load for the listener, designed to teleport the senses and commit minds to the astral plane possibly forever.”

ANNIE HAMILTON
ANNOUNCES DEBUT ALBUM
THE FUTURE IS HERE BUT IT FEELS KINDA LIKE THE PAST
OUT MAY 20 ON [PIAS] AUSTRALIA

SHARES NEW SINGLE ‘NIGHT OFF‘

ANNOUNCES HEADLINE LONDON SHOW

PRAISE FOR ANNIE HAMILTON

“Deft indie pop with a crackle of electricity in its veins, ‘Electric Night’ is a pointed, immediate, immaculate finessed return from a talent to watch.”
Clash Magazine (Track of the Day)

“Annie Hamilton’s new single ‘Electric Night’ is a giddy rush. The Australian singer-songwriter marshals shoegaze textures, thrumming guitars and delirious lyrical repetition to great effect on this song, which should sound like a downright revelation live in concert.”
NME

“… [A]nnie’s music is seriously underrated. this has it all.”
Declan Byrne, triple j

“She finds the extraordinary in everyday life, and creates beautiful, emotionally-rich indie tunes to explore this wonder… Hamilton has a knack for making music that is at once hugely personal and completely universal”
Purple Sneakers

“[E]verything Annie Hamilton has done since feels like a move you’d expect from someone amongst the future of Australian pop”
Pilerats

Adored Eora/Sydney-based musician, visual artist and designer Annie Hamilton today announces her long-awaited debut album, the future is here but it feels kinda like the past, out May 20 on [PIAS] Australia, also sharing latest single ‘Night Off’. Alongside the announcement, she also releases a limited-edition capsule collection of gender-neutral clothing through her eponymous fashion label, available now through her website.

For an album comprised of intense moments of feeling distilled into song, ‘Night Off’ arrives as one of its most effervescent and light-hearted: a sweeping, lovelorn ode to the all-consuming crush, whose shimmering synths and tremolo’d guitars combine with a dynamic, slightly grainy rhythm section to lift you up and carry you away on the waves of its infatuated tempest.

“Nothing is the way that it’s meant to be, the world is ending, but it doesn’t matter because it’s your night off and you’re texting your crush. I wanted this song to capture the energy of sparks flying, the giddiness, the butterflies – full of imperfections but more alive than ever,” Hamilton shares. “This song arrived thick and fast one night last year in between lockdowns – I wrote and recorded the whole thing in the space of a few hours. Usually I edit lyrics, rearrange and re-record parts over and over again, but this song had a sense of urgency to it that I didn’t want to touch, so I left it exactly as it was, apart from the later addition of drums by Luke Davison (The Preatures) recorded remotely from his home studio during lockdown.”

The third single previewed off of Hamilton’s forthcoming debut LP, ‘Night Off’ following the previously shared ‘Electric Night’ and ‘Exist,’ which secured rotation on triple j Unearthed, FBi Radio, 2SER, NME Radio and more, as well as garnering both local and international acclaim from the likes of Clash Magazine, BBC Radio 1’s Jack Saunders, Atwood Magazine and more.

‘Night Off’ is accompanied by a hallucinatory, kaleidoscopic video directed and edited by Jordan Kirk (XingerXanger) with cinematography by Robert Agostino.

“I had the concept for the video floating around in my head for a long time but hadn’t quite figured out how to execute it. I wanted to construct a swirling frenzied fantasy world within the confines of a one-shot video set on the staircase of my house, to convey the feeling of hovering somewhere in the space between reality, memory and fantasy,” says Hamilton, “I pitched the idea to Jordan and luckily he was into it – I knew his style would bring the perfect dark, surreal element into the mix to balance out the DIY craftiness of the props. I made hundreds of cardboard cutouts of bats, raindrops, lightning bolts, moths, stars and moons and enlisted a bunch of friends to be puppeteers – the shoot was chaotic and hilarious and perfectly matches the woozy rawness, imperfection and spontaneity of the song.”

Video director Jordan Kirk adds: “I love music videos with a strong and simple theme, and I was drawn to Annie’s initial concept due to this. I believe that working within limits helps creativity, and knew that we would be able to stick to her idea, while heightening it with the right lighting, shooting techniques and editing to achieve the crackling darkness and urgency that is present in the track.”

Fans in NSW have the opportunity to hear Annie Hamilton perform material from her debut LP live at her upcoming Great Southern Nights headline show on Friday, March 25 at The Vanguard in Newtown, supported by Le Pie. More info can be found and tickets can be purchased here. Today, Hamilton also announces a headline shows at London’s The Social, taking place on Sunday, July 31.
UPCOMING ANNIE HAMILTON TOUR DATES

March 25, 2022 | The Vanguard, Sydney
July 31, 2022 | The Social, London

Obsessed with memory, dream worlds, fantasies and parallel realities, the future is here but it feels kinda like the past is a transportive, mystical journey that traces the contours of a balmy, high summer night, from the muggy, red-dirt afternoons that give way to electric blue twilights, through the navy-black nights sporadically, breath-takingly lit up by the whip of treacherous forked lightning, dissolving into warm, fuzzy mornings that sit perched on the window-sill of reality, another day. Sonically and thematically, the future is here but it feels kinda like the past lives in these listless hours of liminal consciousness, a self-contained, through-the-looking-glass universe where time becomes elastic, memories blur imperceptibly into one another and seeds of deep emotional truth come to you in surreal, warped imagery.

Synthetic yet raw, polished yet organic, digital yet gritty, Annie Hamilton’s debut studio full-length hangs suspended in time, cast between a past that is irrecoverable and a future that is seemingly never arriving. Maybe this promised future will never arrive, but, then again, maybe we don’t want it to anyway – maybe we want something else. Maybe, as so many did throughout the pandemic, we would rather turn backwards towards nostalgia, elsewhere towards escapism.

Inspired by this pivot towards interiority and comfort, galvanised by the opportunity to start afresh, Hamilton decided to scrap her entire backlog at the beginning of the pandemic: demos, half-written songs, half-recorded works-in-progress all abandoned, starting over once more with a completely blank canvas and a committed willingness to get lost in a new world of her own creation. With the time and space to approach writing, recording and co-producing as a full-time occupation, and, assuming that the pandemic would not last as it eventually would, she felt it important to capture that moment in time before it flickered out ephemerally. Instead, the future is here but it feels kinda like the past hits upon something broader and more universal.

“It’s about the passing of time,” explains Hamilton, “how sometimes it flies by and sometimes it drags on forever and we’re always looking ahead wanting something more or wallowing in nostalgia, stuck in a past that probably wasn’t as good at the time as we remember it… the sense that the grass is always greener. The sense that there is never enough time to do everything that we want to do, or the feeling that we should have done more with the time that has already passed.”

Working on her own, in collaboration with co-producers Pete Covington and Jake Webb (Methyl Ethel), and featuring contributions from Jenny McCullagh and Rosie Fitzgerald (I Know Leopard), Matt Mason (DMA’s) and Luke Davison (The Preatures), the future is here but it feels kinda like the past collects little moments of emotionality, snapshots now perfectly preserved in time forever. From the record’s opening run of the warping, grandiose ‘Providence Portal,’ through the anthemic, uplifting-yet-existential ‘Exist’ and onto the giddy, unbound ‘Electric Night,’ Hamilton’s ethereal vocal delivery enchants entirely with one distinct message: “come through the portal with me”.

For any soul willing to undertake that journey, the future is here but it feels kinda like the past delves into heady fantasies and daydreams that feel viscerally yet supernaturally real in numbers like ‘Night Off’ and the field-recording-rich ineffable ‘Interlude (A Dream)’, glitching constantly, lurching its listener past flickers of far-off, colliding worlds (‘Bad Trip’) and other lives (as in the lush ‘Again’ and widescreen, dramatic number ‘Pieces of You’), before sweeping you up into the uncertain, looming stratosphere with the fuzzed-out ‘Labyrinth‘ – and into the mercy of ‘All The Doors Inside My Home Are Slamming Into One Other’, which gently lays you down in the first sunbeams of day to rest in time for flighty closer ‘Whirlwind’, as the cycle begins again.

Rejecting straight-forward narrative structure in favour of pinning down hyper-specific yet universally empathetic moments, the future is here but it feels kinda like the past is a stylised-yet-grainy collage of snapshots that span a mammoth range of emotion, sound and genre, but are tied together as documentation of little human moments, full of contradiction and duality, reality as metaphor and metaphor as reality, stumbling through life and trying to make some kind of beautiful, fleeting sense of it.

ICONIC FESTIVAL CELEBRATES ITS COMING OF AGE WITH SECOND LINE-UP ANNOUNCEMENT

by the partae March 8, 2022
written by the partae

ANNOUNCING ITS SECOND LINE-UP

 ICONIC FESTIVAL COMES OF AGE

19-22 MAY 2022, GOLD COAST

Now in its 21st year, Blues on Broadbeach, one of Australia’s largest music festivals, is proud to announce the second tranche of extraordinary Blues artists added to an already stellar bill.

Headliners James Morrison Motown Experience, Robben Ford (US) and R.L. Boyce (US) are being joined by Karise Eden, Osaka Monaurail (Japan), Blue Empress       All-Stars, Matty T Wall, and many more, in a 2022 line-up, you won’t want to miss.

This extraordinary collection of international and national artists will take to the stage on the Gold Coast over four days from 19-22 May.

Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate highlighted a ray of sunshine: “It’s been a tough couple of weeks for SE Queensland and other parts of the east coast with the recent floods so it’s nice to be sharing some good news, and music certainly has a way of putting a smile on people’s faces and bringing us together.”

“We’re so excited for this year’s Blues on Broadbeach Music Festival, and by the looks of the artist line-up, 2022 is going to be bigger and better than ever.

“I can’t wait to dust off the boots and get down to Broadbeach in May to enjoy this four-day celebration of blues music and I hope to see all of you there.”

Festival Director, Mark Duckworth said this year’s Blues on Broadbeach is all about returning to its roots: “We want to continue to bring our festival fans a collection of artists which celebrate all the different music styles in the Blues genre as well as a few surprises.”

“It is so important to us that we bring out not just the big names, but those artists that are true to the festival and represent the very best of what Blues music has to offer. With our international borders finally open again, we’re excited to welcome to our stages some truly incredible international artists and some unique performances which you won’t see anywhere else and won’t want to miss.”

We know Karise Eden’s voice can move a nation. We know that the celebrated Blues songbird’s performances are powerful, engrossing, and bold. So, we know that she is going to fit right into the Blues on Broadbeach bill, and we are thrilled to welcome her to the renowned Gold Coast stage in May.

“I’m so excited to be able to perform in the flesh at Blues on Broadbeach, after the digital-only performance for Bandwidth in 2020,” said Karise.

“Our industry, artists, venues, crew, and people across all areas of this sector have been so greatly affected by the pandemic so, to be able to return to play live in 2022 is such a lift to the spirits.

“For my performance, I will be backed by a full live band for the first time in what feels like forever! I am also thrilled to be launching my forthcoming album ‘Into the Black’ at the festival, which Blues on Broadbeach attendees will get a full exclusive live preview of. It’s going to be a great time – I can’t wait to see everyone there!”

The sensational Osaka Monaurail is Japan’s premiere funk orchestra, ready to make waves on Australia’s shores at Blues on Broadbeach.

With their sharp suits, synchronised routines, and powerful horn section, Osaka Monaurail will have feet movin’ and hips shakin’ from the moment they hit the stage.

Blues on Broadbeach is proud to present Australia’s finest Blues and Roots artists in the spectacular nine-piece Blue Empress All-Stars. Fronted by seven Blues sisters: Fiona Boyes, Anna Scionti, Cara Robinson, Leesa Gentz, Julz Parker, Alison Penney, and Sweet Felicia, they are joined by Hammond B3 and sax maestro, Tim Neal, and drummer / percussionist Mark Grunden.

With more than 120 national and international awards between them for their individual performances and recordings, they are a force to be reckoned with!

From the Classic Era of the great 1920s Blues women, they take you on a road trip from the vintage to the contemporary.  Whatever your style of Blues, you’ll hear it from these artists. Don’t get fooled into thinking this is a Blues cover band, it’s not! Virtuoso performance and original songwriting has marked the careers of all these artists, and now they bring it all to the Bandstand.

“With Blue Empress All-Stars, we’ve curated a rare collaboration. We’ve put together a group of award-winning, remarkable women, all of whom are respected band leaders in their own right.  That’s one of the truly exciting things about playing a major festival like Blues on Broadbeach – the opportunity to put together a special act, something you just can’t see every day!” enthused Fiona Boyes.

Hear directly from Fiona Boyes here.

Along with already announced Dave Hole, here comes more of the best from the West (now that they can actually travel out of the State) with the Matty T Wall band poised to slay the Blues on Broadbeach stages more motivated and addictively electric than ever with two killer rhythm legends of the Perth scene, Ric Whittle on the drums and Leigh Miller on bass guitar.

From sweet blues to gritty, stomping, blues-rocking beats, and now having seen nominations and awards across Australia and the USA, this is a breakout Australian blues artist you do not want to miss seeing!

WET LEG: playing Melbourne + Sydney July 2022!

by the partae March 8, 2022

Secret Sounds Presents
WET LEG
MELBOURNE & SYDNEY HEADLINE DATES
Presale available from 10 am local, Thursday 10 March
Tickets on sale to general public at 10am local, Friday 11 March
“Florence, Iggy Pop and Hayley Williams love them – and so must you.” The Guardian
“…a dreamy, Wes Anderson-esque aesthetic with sharp, sardonic indie rock.” Stereogum
Today Secret Sounds reveals that Isle of Wight band of the moment WET LEG, are set to play two very special headline dates alongside their much-anticipated, sold out Splendour in the Grass set.

Armed with a string of incredibly catchy singles including ‘Chaise Longue’, ‘Wet Dream’, ‘Too Late Now’, ‘Oh No’ and new single ‘Angelica’, WET LEG will play intimate shows at Howler in Melbourne and Oxford Art Factory in Sydney this July.

Formed in a moment of drunken clarity back in 2019, Rhian Teasdale and Hester Chambers created WET LEG while perched at the summit of a Ferris wheel, a fittingly quirky origin for the whimsical artistry to come.

Armed with their guitars, a penchant for French disco and a hive of imagination that draws on everything from Pierre Bachelet, the Ronettes, and Jane Birkin through to Best Coast, The Strokes and the B52s, they set about making some recordings of their own.

WET LEG has since spawned an ever-growing catalogue of inimitable, chaotic alt/pop majesty with tracks like the crazily catchy ‘Chaise Longue’ swiftly going viral, sparking inclusions on ‘ones to watch’ lists everywhere and drawing a huge crowd to their first proper festival set at Latitude 2021.

From Ferris wheel to record deal, the debut release from the kaleidoscopic world of WET LEG is due in April 2022 and set to raise moods across the globe.

With their US tour kicking off today and both festival and headline dates across the UK and Europe to follow, WET LEG will be in prime form when they bring their idiosyncratic artistry to Australia this July!

WET LEG Australian Headline Tour Dates
Thursday 21 July 2022, Howler, Melbourne
Monday 25 July 2022, Oxford Art Factory, Sydney

Also supporting YEAH YEAH YEAHS
Wednesday 20 July 2022, Margaret Court Arena, Melbourne
Sunday 24 July 2022, Hordern Pavilion, Sydney

Anthony Locascio

Where are you currently based?

Sydney born and raised.

How did you first get into comedy?

It’s always been a private dream of mine, but having parents that are the children of immigrants isn’t exactly conducive to pursuing a career in the arts. But after crash landing in Insolvency (liquidations, bankruptcy) and working there for a few years, my soul began to erode and I ran out of excuses to not try the thing I always wanted to.

I was writing for a few years, and I hit up open mics for a while before hiring out a theatre and inviting all 400 of my cousins (it was mostly friends) to come see my first hour of stand-up (it was…not the best). After that, I completely quit my job and have been chasing this dragon ever since.

How did you keep busy during Covid?

I wrote my new show (come see it), I got very experimental with cooking, got obscenely drunk with my partner, watched all of Lost, and injured my back.

You’re Don’t Call Me A Wog!’ (An E̶t̶h̶n̶i̶c̶ Comedy Story) tour kicks off on Monday, March 14th at the Star Theatre Two at Star Theatres – Adelaide, from there you’re performing in Melbourne, Perth and Sydney, what influences your show and what can we expect?

For the last 30 years, there has been a sub-genre of comedy in this country called ‘Wog Comedy’, an offshoot of ethnic humour. Due to my Italian and Greek roots, and an occasional penchant for mentioning them in my material, I have been labelled as a ‘Wog Comic’ since I first got on stage.

Sometimes (like when I get invited to do shows to audiences of 800 plus as part of ‘wog tours’) I like this, while other times (like when I do shows in shisha bars to 30 Lebanese people and other comedians tell me I’ll crush because its ‘my demographic’ – our countries of origin aren’t even on the same continent) I don’t.

Strangely I’ve felt this way my whole life; sometimes I’ve embraced being the ‘Italian and Greek kid’ and other times it made me feel ashamed, and I think this is a general experience for all ‘ethnic Aussies’.

So this show is the story of my love/hate relationship with my cultural background, through life and then through comedy. It’s very self-deprecating and contains a lot of music, poems, lighting cues, AV slideshow, so it’ll be light and a lot of fun.

Who makes you laugh?

ScoMo. But if you’re talking about comedians, the obvious ones are obvious for a reason, Chapelle, Burr, Seinfeld. Gary Gulman is absolutely the hidden gem of American comedy; please check out ‘The Great Depresh’ on HBO (I think Binge and Foxtel).

And a little closer to home, Luke Heggie is the best in this country, he’ll be a household name in no time, and he makes me want to quit every time I see the guy get up.

How do you prepare for each show?

I try to get on stage as much as possible; minimum 3 times a week but preferably multiple times a night. Thankfully the Sydney Comedy Scene just keeps burgeoning so there are plenty of opportunities to perform.

To prepare for the hour shows (this is my 5th) I’ll generally recite the entire show, as loudly and animatedly as I would on stage, by myself in my apartment. My neighbours must think a stone-cold lunatic lives in 582. Especially if they can make out any of the material.

Best and worst thing about being a comedian?

It’s a cliché, but having no real boss, setting your own pace, and having a totally blank canvass with the only real remit of audience laughter (or at the very least, intrigue) is pretty great. Also, when you do well, it feels pretty good-inject that sweet, sweet validation right into my bloodstream.

Conversely, meeting people and them instantly firing off a “tell me a joke” (or something like your final question) is fairly annoying. I find if I drop the charisma dial socially, I get hit with “you’re really serious for a comedian” way too often for my liking.

Also, when you don’t do well on stage, its basically being told by a room full of strangers that they don’t approve of your personality.

What do you like to do away from comedy?

I’m a total soccer nerd, so I have a lot of needless 4am wake up calls. I have a couple of podcasts (one comedy based, one about soccer) which takes up way too much time for something I do for free.

What’s planned for 2022?

This tour, which ends in May. Then I’m really looking forward to turning over the material (I’ve started writing the next show already).

I have 7 out of a total of 10 weddings left to go to in 2022. Also I’m turning 30.

Favourite food and place to hangout?

Unquestionably pizza. And I am very lactose intolerant, but love conquers all.

Home, with a hefty, 6 season, 12 episode a season each at 45 minutes run time, TV  show to dive head first into. Or Comedy Clubs.

Why did the chicken cross the road?

To be basted and marinate in olive oil and garlic so me and my greasy cousins can feast on it as an appetiser.

The anticipation for “Bella Italia” in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is growing day by day. From 06 – 10 July 2022, the Neustadt-Glewe airfield will be transformed into an Italian festival village. For the 19th edition of the AIRBEAT ONE Festival, the colors and the gigantic pyro show will shine in green, white and red. Lucas & Steve, Dillon Francis, DJ Lidsba, EDX, HUGEL, MALAA, The Stickman and Zeds Dead close Line Up Phase 2 at the Terminal, for which Ofenbach and Tchami were already fixed.

Hardstyle fans can also rejoice, as the takeover of global hard music player Q-dance has already been announced. Also of huge importance for the hardstyle performance are Adaro, the Dutch hardstyle DJ, Audiotricz, the hardstyle duo, Coone, the Belgian hardstyle DJ, as well as D-Block & S-te-Fan, the Dutch hardstyle duo. They will be joined by Dr. Peacock, Frequencerz, Keltek, Noisecontrollers and Zatox. And for the pre-opening in the Main Circus on Wednesday icons of the Harder styles in Music like Paul Elstak, Code Black, Deadly Guns, Jeborer and Korsakoff are ready.

A new reputation also surrounds the Second Stage, which from AIRBEAT ONE Festival 2022 onwards will be dedicated to the Indian Spirit Festival, thus opening its arms to and welcoming a whole new breed of artists. Foo Fighters announce Australia & New Zealand stadium tour – November/December 2022

by the partae March 7, 2022
written by the partae

With very special guests. Tickets on sale Thursday 10 March

‘A howling, raucous night of celebration’ – The Age

‘A superlative performance that will set the bar high for all other international acts to follow’ – The Australian

‘True showmen who gave their all. They are the high-octane rocket fuel of the rock and roll world’ – Geelong Advertiser

Fresh off their historic 3-hour rock & roll marathon for 30,000 adoring fans last Friday – the first stadium concert in Australia in two long years – Frontier Touring is thrilled to announce global rock giants Foo Fighters will return to Australia and New Zealand in November/December 2022.

As teased by Dave Grohl on stage in Geelong (VIC) just last Friday night, the 2021 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductees will return to the southern hemisphere this Spring, bringing their unrivalled Foo Fighters live experience to audiences in Perth, Melbourne, Brisbane, Sydney, Wellington and Auckland. It will be Foo Fighters’ first headline tour of both countries since 2018.

Tickets to all cities will go on sale Thursday 10 March via frontiertouring.com/foofighters.  Sign up today to access the Frontier Members Pre-sale, which begins Tuesday 8 March (times staggered; see website for more info).

‘The Pretender’, ‘Monkey Wrench’, ‘The Sky Is A Neighborhood’, ‘Learn to Fly’, ‘All My Life’, ‘Rope’, ‘Breakout’, ‘Best Of You’, ‘This Is a Call’, ‘My Hero’, ‘Times Like These’, ‘Arlandia’, ‘Everlong’, ‘Big Me’ …  Foo Fighters’ sonic arsenal has served as the soundtrack to so many of our lives. Always serving up fan favourites spanning from their 1995 debut up to their recent tenth studio, 2021’s ARIA #1 Medicine At Midnight, Foo Fighters are the world’s premiere stadium/arena attraction. Last week’s triumphant concert in Geelong was nothing short of unforgettable:

‘The show ended with a spectacular version of Everlong and Grohl on his knees, thanking the crowd as fireworks exploded over the stadium’ – The Age

‘As the lights dimmed and the crowd roared, Foo Fighters appeared, feeling like a sight for sore eyes in the wake of empty stages and cancelled tours. Dave Grohl walked around the stage, staring back at the crowd as we all wordlessly exchanged the sentiment that it had been far too long’ – Rolling Stone AU

Joining Foo Fighters as special guests in Nov/Dec are:

Sunshine Coast (QLD) ‘Smoko’ trioThe Chats (Perth, Sydney + Brisbane) are one of Australia’s most exciting – and most fun – punk rock bands, with their notorious single going viral immediately upon release. They’ve toured with heavyweights Queens Of The Stone Age and Cosmic Psychos, selling out shows in AU, New Zealand, England, Scotland, and Europe.

Renowned for a ball-tearing live show, Amyl and The Sniffers (Wellington + Auckland) won an ARIA Award for ‘Best Rock Album’ last year, capping off a wild 12 months for the lunatic, likeable punks. Their 2021 effort Comfort to Me debuted at #2 in Australia, #21 in the UK, and #18 in the US, and was BBC6’s Album of the Day.

Channelling Riot Grrrl-era energy with a 2021 spin, Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers (Melbourne) formed back at high school, the now 20 year-olds having cut their teeth with sets at Groovin’ The Moo, Laneway, Falls, Lost Paradise & Spilt Milk.

Having played some of the UK’s biggest festival stages in 2021, Manchester (UK) emo power-pop dual fronted outfit Hot Milk will perform on our shores for the very first time when they head down our way with the Foos’ (Melbourne, Brisbane + Sydney).

After taking out the triple j unearthed high crown in 2020, Adelaide two-piece Teenage Joans (Perth) have gone from strength to strength, sharing stages with acts such as Violent Soho, Ruby Fields, Clowns, Amy Shark and more.

Dick Move (Wellington + Auckland) are infamous already for their pumping live shows, their catalogue of blink-and-you’ll-miss-it punk anthems cutting, confronting, empowering and dripping with brash cheekiness and political angst.

These will be the biggest rock shows of 2022. Act quickly to secure your tickets… dates will sell out, don’t miss out!

Foo Fighters are Dave Grohl, Taylor Hawkins, Nate Mendel, Chris Shiflett, Pat Smear and Rami Jaffee.

SOUL GLO SHARE NEW SINGLE “DRIPONOMICS” OUT NOW

by the partae March 7, 2022
written by the partae

Philly based hardcore band Soul Glo have released their latest single, “Driponomics,” ahead of their fourth studio album Diaspora Problems due out on March 25th. This scathing commentary on capitalism and economic disparity is contrasted with the prevalence of hypebeast culture, listing popular designers and brands in between screeching distortion and a heavy bassline. The track also features a verse from fellow Philly native, rapper Mother Maryrose.

Soul Glo explains that “Driponomics is for everyone doing what they have to do to get by and to get fly. Oftentimes lower-income and working class people are criticised for how they survive out here, especially in times of crisis. People are getting more desperate but simultaneously more creative with their income options, and this song is a salute to that. Love to Mother Maryrose whose verse on this song is one of the best moments on our album.”

Presented in a hardcore whirlwind of justified rage, Soul Glo’s sharp lyrics are always thought provoking and politically charged, with lines like:
“Ain’t nothin’ as ugly as a balance in the red / I want bands on every politician’s head”

Fusing hip-hop, hardcore, and punk, the Philly outfit are fearless in their approach and even more ruthless in their delivery. Injecting their colourful narrative into predominantly white spaces, Soul Glo has the scope and ability to transcend outer appearances in hardcore music. With the release of Diaspora Problems, the band is not aiming for it to be the only album like it that exists, but instead one of many entries in a new dawn for rock music.

Pre-orders are available now, here.

Soul Glo is Pierce Jordan (vocals), Ruben Polo (guitar) and GG Guerra (bass, vocals, programming)

Amy Shark @ Rod Laver Arena, March 4 2022

Photography & Words: Darren Chan @darrenchanphotography

Amy Shark has amassed a large fanbase in the past few years demonstrated by Rod Laver Arena being at full capacity tonight. Fans had been patiently waiting for Amy Shark return to Melbourne since the announcement of her Cry Forever tour in late 2020.

In the flood of lights and smoke, Amy strolled onstage to a huge applause. She took in the moment before opening with “The Wolves”. After a brief pause, her hit song “Everybody Rise” got the crowd to their feet.

With a three piece band, she effortlessly covered her catalog of songs from her two albums. She provided backstories to some of her songs and  amusing anecdotes, such as describing the importance of happiness before singing “C’mon”, “The Idiot” being a song about her ex-boyfriend, to being a local tourism advisor getting thousands of messages on social media asking the best places to park and eat before her show.

There was plenty of dynamics in her set, stripping the music back to just her acoustic for “You’ll Never Meet Anyone Like Me Again”, to the band’s pumping rendition of The Killers “Mr Brightside”, acknowledging her fan’s support from the early days at the Corner Hotel to tonight’s arena show.

Amy demonstrated her musicality with an intricate acoustic fingerpicking

start to “Psycho” leading to an energetic outro that had the crowd on their feet.

During the breakdown of “Mess you up”, she asks the crowd “Have I messed you up Melbourne?” before leaning into the final chorus and a rain of sparks showers the stage.

As the stage lights dim, the dramatic Jaws soundtrack plays through PA before the percussive guitar skanking of “Baby Steps” steps up the energy of the show with a dazzling light display.

It was time to get to where it began with “Adore”. The crowd were on their feet singing along and surging to the front of stage ending with a rapturous applause.

Unfortunately Ed Sheeran and Keith Urban weren’t present for their contribution to “Love Songs Ain’t For Us”, but the atmosphere was there as phone torches lit up the arena.

As Amy launches into her final song “I said Hi”, she acknowledges the huge support she has had and anyone who likes her music is a very special type of person. Tonight was a celebration of live music returning on a grander scale.

Krewella Releases Emotionally Charged 3rd Studio Album “The Body Never Lies” and Gears Up for Upcoming Album Tour

Artists: Krewella
Title: The Body Never Lies
Label: Mixed Kids Records

Download / Stream

Throughout their illustrious career, the name Krewella has become known for hard-hitting and yet emotionally charged music. True to form, the Jahan and Yasmine sisters’ new body of work – “The Body Never Lies” is a shining example of their signature sound and artistic direction. After releasing singles “Never Been Hurt” with BEAUZ, “No Control” with MADGRRL, and “I’m Just A Monster Underneath, My Darling,” Krewella has unveiled the full 10-track masterpiece. The album was created from an intimate, internal space of Krewella‘s self-reflection, exploring impermanence, the oddity of human experience, their relationship to the world around them as women in a male-dominated society. “The Body Never Lies” title hints at the range of emotions within the LP, with each track as unique and varied as our feelings themselves. “Traces” serves as a haunting opener, quickly followed by a series of heavier tracks, including the drum & bass-inspired “In The Water” and the angry yet touching “War Forever.” Krewella hits a different vibe with the last three tracks, which explore the darker and more tender side of the human experience. After a long wait for this highly anticipated album, to say that Krewella has done it again with “The Body Never Lies” would be an understatement. The album’s release coincides with their upcoming 2022 album-themed tour, which covers 2+ months of live shows and DJ sets, hitting cities including Seattle, Los Angeles, Chicago, New York, Denver, and more.

“The clench of a fist, the pit in your stomach, the fluid in your veins; the body is a sensor, messenger, keeper of stories, a fortress of the soul, an instrument of knowing, a rocket ship to other worlds. Every cell, pore, and bone recalls the past, absorbs the present, and senses the future. ‘The Body Never Lies‘ is at times an angry, sometimes feverish, but always a euphoric conversation about feeling, remembering, and existing in our individual vessels that encase our soul and memories.” – Krewella

Sisters Jahan and Yasmine exploded onto the scene in 2012 with their debut self-released EP “Play Hard,” which has now been streamed almost 150M times on Spotify alone; additionally, their single “Alive” from the EP has been certified Platinum. Since then, the duo has made a name for themselves and their hard-hitting yet melodic and vocal-driven sound through releases like “Live for the Night,” “Enjoy the Ride,” and more. In 2016, Krewella was awarded a coveted place on Forbes‘s “30 Under 30” list. They have performed at major global music festivals, including Coachella, Lollapalooza, EDC Las Vegas, Ultra Music Festival, iHeartRadio Music Festival, and many others, in addition to their own headlining tours. As one of the main elements of the Krewella canon, the group’s onstage performances serve as the live extension of their music and art, incorporating a multitude of audiovisual elements together with Jahan and Yasmine‘s live vocals and powerful onstage energy.
