Robert Adam ‘Don’t Touch My Rhinestones’ Premiere

by the partae February 6, 2022
written by the partae
Sporting western Canada’s iconic white stetson and illuminated in rodeo crystal, Robert Adam crafts records with a reverent respect for traditional country music, while infusing an accessible, modern tone – and one thing is guaranteed, Robert is the most gritty, pretty cowboy you’ve seen.

“Don’t Touch My Rhinestones”, will be his second single release on the road to his long awaited “Baby Blue” EP. This song is sure to highlight his sweet and salty vocals bedazzled with a message of standing one’s own ground and finding self empowerment. Robert Adam serves lyrics of sharp wit, and supreme sass on a platter of old school outlaw country. Timeless guitar tones, wailing pedal steel guitar, full girl group background vocals, eccentric wurlitzer, honey toned B3 all lay out the stage to Robert’s fierce sweet and salty lead vocals. Gleaning on a clear inspiration from old school seventies country, Rob’s prairie queer aura shines like a star, and sets a modern tone of inclusivity for both seasoned country listeners and those who may not have been welcomed by the genre in the past.

Whether it’s rhinestoning his outfit or graduating with honours, he is anything but one dimensional.

Izza

by the partae February 6, 2022
written by the partae
Where are you currently based?

I’m in LA!

How did you first start playing music?

I started playing piano when I was a kid which eventually led me to songwriting and performing. I’ve always been a fan of music and I love being able to be an artist and make my own music now.

What’s been happening recently?

A lot! I have been busy recording and planning my song releases.

Your latest single ‘Shut Up!’ came out on Feb 4; what influenced the sound and songwriting?

I wanted to create a song that had attitude and spunk. The lyrics reference themes of royalty and taking back your power through your individuality. I wanted the production to be simple, but powerful because the lyrics are the focal point of the track.

How did you go about writing ‘Shut Up!’?

I wrote “Shut Up!” as a sequel to my song “Too Hot.” Both songs celebrate individuality and being authentic to yourself no matter how much others want to dim your light. It’s about blocking the haters and being confident in your identity.

Where and when did you record/produce/master?

The overall process for “Shut Up!” was very quick. I finished the writing, recording, and mastering in about 3 weeks. I made the song in December 2021 and I’m releasing it now!

How has the pandemic affected your process?

The pandemic has allowed me to focus on music and find my voice. I’ve been writing every day and formulating a pop sound that beat represents me as an artist.

What does your other current single ‘Too Hot’ mean to you?

“Too Hot” is special to me because it’s the song that inspired me to write more unapologetic pop songs like “Shut Up!” I want to bring that fierce pop energy back to the music industry like how it was in the late 2000s early 2010s.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

I’ve been listening to a lot of Noga Erez.

What do you like to do away from music?

I love being active whether that’s playing tennis, hiking, or rock climbing.

What’s planned for 2022?

The plan is to continue to release music and hopefully play some live shows!

Favourite food and place to hang out?

I really like sushi and Mexican food. If I’m not making music, I am usually hanging out outside like at the beach or in the hills on a hike.

Following the incendiary trail blazed single ‘Smashmouth’ and their remix of Payday and Danny Brown, Eora/Sydney-based, Korean-Australian rap outfit 1300 (pron. “one-three-hundred”) have firmly marked their place on the music stage with their sweat-doused, subterrestrial take on music that switches between English and Korean with ease. Today, they take this dynamic to the next level, with their latest release ‘Oldboy’. LISTEN HERE + WATCH HERE.

Inspired by the classic Korean film Old Boy, 1300 expand on the intense shock value that comes with the film itself, as ‘Oldboy’ bursts into the listener’s ears with a loud hip-hop bassline that is merged with hyper pop elements. A dose of high-energy rap, ‘Oldboy’ is melodic in flow, unleashing an infectious delivery that puts their ability to transcend genre on full display. On the influence behind the track, 1300 explain “When we started working on the beat we were thinking of the track ‘Go Crazy’ and the reference to ‘Black and Yellow’. Then we added the theme to one of our favourite Korean films Old Boy (2003) and the rest is history.”

With the release comes a dynamic music video that is a rambunctious homage to the classic film, shot by Videohead (Phil Fresh, Lil Spacely, Mel Bailey) and directed by Raghav Rampal. On the collaboration, Rampal says, “Our main goal with this video was to pay homage to the 2003 original Oldboy by Park Chan-wook, but 1300-ify it. The movie is so iconic and stylised, and has a lot of jaw-dropping scenes, so our approach was to pick the scenes we thought were the most iconic, and put each rapper into those scenes, as if they’re Oh Dae-su, so it would feel like the movie. The team (Tara, Elle, Maggie & Elijah) put a lot of work into re-creating the locations, costume and make-up for the perfect 1300-to-Oldboy balance, which all came alive through Tom’s cinematography, and Adam’s editing. It was also just the funnest shoot we’ve all had!”

Transposing the energy of their records to an exhilarating, boisterous live show, 1300 have already claimed a slew of notable support slots, appearing alongside Genesis Owusu, PNAU, Shady Nasty, Jono Ma, Taka Perry, 3K, Kota Banks and more. Quickly consolidating their reputation as a multifaceted and burgeoning force in the scene, they have already amassed over 500,000 Spotify streams and garnered playlist support from triple j and triple j Unearthed as a Feature Artist, alongside earned praise from outlets for their “hip-hop-inspired brew that is as sharp as it is palatable” by Rolling Stone Australia, a “refreshing take on Korean rap” by Acclaim and “unmatchable chemistry” by Purple Sneakers amongst others.

Comprised of rappers rako, goyo, DALI HART, producer-singer Nerdie, and producer pokari.sweat, 1300 subsume the raw volatility of Soundcloud rap and the high-budget sheen of K-hip hop, formulating a sound that cannot be understood or defined in pure stylistic terms. Built from everything goes studio sessions, their music is instead caught in a state of endless dynamism that never ceases to electrify or surprise, bottling the potential of a group animated by their boundless creativity, the individual members coming together like particles in the Large Hadron Collider that is 1300. What ties it all together is the group’s uncompromising pursuit of raucous energy, a constant momentum, and intensity born in-studio sessions that is then given shape and sound through their music.

KAMASI WASHINGTON Unveils new song ‘The Garden Path’ Out now via Young Performs on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon

Kamasi Washington debuts a new song, ‘The Garden Path‘, and performed it for the first time ever, making his late night television debut overnight on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Listen to the song, out via Young / Remote Control Records, here.

“The world feels turned upside down,” says Washington of the song. “There’s so much push and pull in every direction, from everyone you meet—no one knows what to think, who to believe, or how to approach life right now. No matter how smart you are, it’s hard not to feel blind.”

The song is Washington’s first new, original music in nearly a year and follows several banner years for the jazz titan. 2021 saw the release of ‘Sun Kissed Child,’ a track made for The Undefeated’s Music For The Movement series, and a cover of Metallica’s ‘My Friend of Misery‘ for their celebrated The Metallica Blacklist compilation. In 2020, Washington released his Emmy- and Grammy-nominated score for Becoming, director Nadia Hallgren and Netflix’s documentary profiling First Lady Michelle Obama.

Kamasi Washington is a multi-instrumentalist, producer and composer born and raised in Los Angeles. His three bodies of work to date—The Epic; Harmony of Difference, an EP originally commissioned for the 2017 Whitney Biennial; and Heaven and Earth—are among the most acclaimed of the past decade. As Told To G/D Thyself, his short film companion to Heaven and Earth, debuted at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival to widespread acclaim. Washington has toured the world over and collaborated and shared stages with Kendrick Lamar, Florence + the Machine, Herbie Hancock and many more.

OCEAN ALLEY shows kicks off tonight; Hockey Dad to replace Psychedelic Porn Crumpets

– Music Feeds“Enough superstar power to blast a hole into outer space.”
– Life Without Andy

Australian rock outfit Ocean Alley kick off their highly anticipated run of shows tonight in Far North Queensland as part of Cairns Summer Sounds, before launching their own national tour next week. After two years of COVID-related postponements, the band have today announced that Hockey Dad will replace Psychedelic Porn Crumpets as main tour supports.

Final tickets for all Queensland dates on sale from oceanalley.com.au.

Due to Western Australian border restrictions, Psychedelic Porn Crumpets can no longer join the 11-date tour, and will only perform at the Perth show which has been postponed until May 28. In their place, Windang’s favourite surf-rock duo Hockey Dad have stepped up to the plate and will cover all cities except Adelaide and Perth; with Sydney indie-rockers Le Shiv jumping onboard for the former. Indie-pop sweethearts Dulcie remain on support duties for all dates.

As a result of state restrictions following the Omicron outbreak, all Sydney and Adelaide dates will now operate as seated shows – this means capacity has been reduced and some ticket-holders will be reallocated to a different date. Ticket buyers are advised to check their emails next week for confirmation of which date their tickets are now valid for. Date swaps may be possible pending ticket availability; otherwise tickets can be safely resold via the Tixel marketplace or a full refund obtained from the respective ticketing outlet. All other cities remain unchanged.

The upcoming tour has sold more than 30,000 tickets around the country with 7 sold out shows, and comes fresh following the six-piece’s latest Hottest 100 success, landing two tracks for 2021 – their latest summery single ‘Touch Back Down‘ charting at #20 and #54 with their Pink Floyd medley that was covered for Like A Version. This feat marks five consecutive years in the countdown, with 10 different songs placing during that time.

Ahead of their return to the stage, the band recently connected with journalist Tony Armstrong for a yarn that covers getting back on the road, what they’ve missed about touring, new music and what’s planned for 2022. Watch Part 1 here.

From Northern Beaches dive bars to sold out international tours, Ocean Alley’s evolution has been driven by an endless pursuit to push their sound and abilities to new limits. Operating as a proudly independent band, their output has always been underscored by a refreshingly chilled authenticity and relatability that has seen them achieve more than 480 million catalogue streams.

Since the release of their Gold-certified breakthrough Chiaroscuro (2018) which saw the band take the #1 spot in triple j’s Hottest 100 of 2018 for their double platinum smash ‘Confidence’, the six-piece have performed major festivals including Reading & Leeds (UK), Splendour In The Grass (AUS) and Sziget (HU), debuted at #3 on the ARIA charts for their critically acclaimed 2020 album Lonely Diamond, have received Gold certification on five singles and been nominated for 2 ARIA Awards.

JUST A GENT RETURNS WITH DYNAMIC ARNO FARAJI COLLABORATION ‘WHO WOULD HAVE THOUGHT’ FROM FORTHCOMING DEBUT ALBUM, PLANET OASIS

by the partae February 4, 2022
written by the partae

Looking ahead to the release of his long awaited debut album Planet Oasis in April, producer and sonic curator extraordinaire Just A Gent gives fans another taste of the bigger picture in new single ‘Who Would Have Thought’.

A collaboration with West Coast hip hop firebrand Arno Faraji, the newest release from Just A Gent highlights both his love for finding new inspiration and sounds, and also his pure knack for bringing unique voices together into the mix with his own honed style. The execution of it all = effortlessly engaging for maximum entertainment.

Recorded by Just A Gent in Mindaribba on Wonnarua Country (Maitland, NSW), he reunited with Faraji after having first worked with him on the latter’s track ‘Bass Jumpin’. Working remotely with one another, ‘Who Would Have Thought’ was born and as Just A Gent says, Faraji’s added talents as a producer elevated the final product.

“‘Who Would Have Thought’ is a tune to listen to while you reflect back and appreciate everything you have done and all the hard work you put it to get to this point in your journey. We wanted to give you that nostalgic feel and take you to another world.

I made the beat earlier this year and having worked with Arno in the past on his tune ‘Bass Jumpin’ I instantly imagined him on this one, so I flicked it over to him and thankfully he loved it. A week later he flicked back a demo and after a call or two and some back and forths we had it. Arno is a kickass producer himself so he was able to record his takes at home and I just mixed them to taste.”
JUST A GENT

“I wrote the lyrics to this track a little while ago, as I was leaving a state of physical and mental exhaustion, trying to find ways to motivate myself and charge up. It was one of those times when the pursuit was also the reward and that was enough to inspire a lot outta me. “Who would’ve thought I’d make it this far” is like a mantra to inspire that long game hustle but also help you reflect on how far you came & keep going. If this track can work in a way that can inspire a thirst for more in anybody I’m happy!”
ARNO FARAJI

2021 was a busy year for Just A Gent, releasing a string of successful releases throughout the year including ‘Aliens’, ‘Island Fever’ and ‘Swallowed Up’ – all three dictating the journey the producer was charting for himself as he worked his way towards Planet Oasis.

The album, due out April 1st, will mark a touchstone moment for Just A Gent, whose career to date has seen him become an in-demand name on club and festival circuits, buoyed on by multiple EP collections that have shown his natural talent.

Birdz Shares New Single/Video ‘Aussie, Aussie’ from Album ‘LEGACY’ ; Album Tour Dates

by the partae February 4, 2022
written by the partae

“Legacy on the whole seeks to trigger change in the here and now. “Aussie Aussie”, the album’s catchiest song, is a sardonic yet no-less-harrowing broadside against police brutality. “- Rolling Stone

“But there’s a satirical edge to ‘Aussie Aussie’ that gives it a different flavour to a straight-up protest anthem. It’s tongue-in-cheek, managing to poke fun at what is a sacred cow to some parts of Australia’s cultural identity while simultaneously slaughtering it.” – triple j

Today Birdz releases the official video for his single ‘Aussie, Aussie‘, directed by award-winning Melbourne-based director, Lilah Benetti and produced by top filmmaker Tig Terera and cinematographer Jesse Lane.

Lifted from his acclaimed second LP LEGACY, ‘Aussie, Aussie’ is in true Birdz style, unapologetic in its themes and a wider motif of the album, reading like an open letter to his son.

The prominent rapper and proud Butchulla man, says of the song, “Aussie Aussie” is a song about the harsh realities we endure as Blakfullas and challenges the idea of “Aussie” nationalism – a concept that is dependent on the erasure of Blak voices. Blak deaths in custody, police brutality, forced child removal, these are realities that a majority of Australians are either still unaware of or remain wilfully ignorant towards. Governments and police attempt to silence us on a daily basis, denying the truth about what’s been happening since 1788.

That’s why I write songs like “Aussie Aussie” – it’s giving voice to the unheard and a space for our truth to live unapologetically. I hope it can also provide a starting point for those wanting to learn more about what’s really going on in this country. “

The official video was shot on Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung Country and Dja Dja Wurrung Country, with the vision for the clip led purely by the music. The visual narrative follows a non-linear journey; we see layered representations of strength, community and carefree Blak joy while the ‘backseat’ perspective makes us feel like an onlooker as we move through the changing landscapes that follow a metaphorical ‘day in the life’ flow.

Director Lilah Benetti explains further, “The audience is made aware of their own presence through Birdz close up performance. It’s delivered straight to the camera, directly to us, which is an important part of the overall communication of the concept. It is a really intimate and authentic performance and I think it really captures Birdz calm, charisma and attitude.”

Birdz will embark on his national headline tour, beginning in Sydney on April 1, then Brisbane on April 2 and Adelaide on April 8, before making an appearance at Shepparton’s Land of Plenty Festival on April 9 then bringing his string of shows to a close at hometown Melbourne on April 22. Presented by triple j, Birdz’s national tour will be a celebration of his unique brand of honest, powerful hip-hop, showcasing music from LEGACY as well as favourites his fans know and love. Special guests will include Narli, The Ancient Bloods, Marlon x Rulla and Jay Gabriel.

Raised in Katherine, Northern Territory and now based in Naarm / Melbourne, Birdz took to crafting his career-shaping second record alongside the production hand of longtime collaborator and friend, trials, plus hand-selected some of Australia’s best-loved artists to feature including Fred Leone, Ngaiire, Thom Crawford and Missy Higgins. On release, the album was chosen as feature album on triple j and Radio Adelaide.

As one of Bad Apples Music’s most established signees, in 2021, Birdz appeared on ABC’s The Set with Missy Higgins, featured on triple j and ABC iview’s RAP IT UP documentary series and is the face of a nationwide ‘Strong Mob’ health campaign.

His 2017 debut album Train Of Thought was received with widespread acclaim. The album won the Australian Independent Record Label Associations’ title of Best Independent Hip Hop Album, was shortlisted for the Australian Music Prize, nominated for Music Victoria’s Best Hip Hop Album and was simultaneously loved by community radio.

– The New York Times

“It’s a weighty, powerful album with an identity entirely of its own. And while clearly not constructed with commercial ambition at the forefront of its mind, it’s certainly good enough to make an unlikely star of the man behind it.” – The Guardian

“a finely crafted and devastating take on the loss” – NME

“‘Process’ is a triumph not only of feeling and melody, but also of patience and efficiency.”
– Loud & Quiet

“He beautifully floats between delicate falsetto and gorgeous tenor as the instrumentation builds underneath him, transforming the song from a warmhearted ballad to a compelling experience.” – Stereogum

Five years ago Sampha released his debut album Process via Young / Remote Control Records. The seminal album was met with widespread critical-acclaim and went on to be named the 2017 Mercury-Prize winner. Today, marks the 5th anniversary and in celebration Sampha releases a special 12-track bonus edition of Process which includes two newly available songs ‘Inbetween and Overseas’ and ‘Answer’.

Process, which features singles ‘(No One Knows Me) Like The Piano’, ‘Timmy’s Prayer’ and ‘Blood On Me’, is an emotionally raw and achingly beautiful statement on loss, grief and self-discovery. A creation from Sampha, who worked with Scottish-born producer Rodaidh McDonald (Mustafa, The xx, David Bryne), this album saw Sampha step into the spotlight for the first time to tell his own story.

Prior to releasing his debut album, Sampha had established himself as a sought-after studio collaborator having lent his vocal, production, and songwriting talents to a range of standout releases from homegrown UK contemporaries SBTRKT, FKA twigs, and world-renowned superstars like Drake, Beyonce, Kanye West, Frank Ocean, and Solange. Since then, Sampha has continued to build on these successes through recent collaborations with Alicia Keys, Everything Is Recorded, Mustafa, and Headie One.

The debut album was released in musical form in 2017, alongside a 37-minute rich visual contextualisation of the same name. Filmed between Freetown, Sierra Leone and Morden, South London, Process was directed by the Los Angeles Emmy and Grammy-nominated director Kahlil Joseph; the artist and filmmaker behind some of the world’s most exciting and forward-thinking visuals, including ‘Lemonade’ (Beyonce), ‘Until The Quiet Comes’ (Flying Lotus), and ‘m.A.A.d’ (Kendrick Lamar). The film is still available to view via Apple Music HERE.

Previously only available on 2017 Japanese CD edition, bonus singles ‘Inbetween and Overseas’ and ‘Answer’ are available now globally via Process (Bonus Edition).

Best Before

Nearly four years following the release of his critically acclaimed 2018 album CARE FOR ME, the independent Chicago rapper-producer and Pivot Gang co-Founder Saba has released his long-awaited third studio album, Few Good Things. The 14-song  LP also features notable collaborations, including Pivot Gang, Black Thought, Krayzie Bone, 6LACK, Smino, Mereba, Fousheé, Benjamin Earl Turner, and more. LISTEN HERE.

The dynamic record includes new standout, ‘Still’ (feat. 6LACK and Smino), in addition to the previously released singles, ‘Survivor’s Guilt‘ with fellow Chicago rapper G Herbo, the Krayzie Bone-assisted ‘Come My Way‘, hard-hitting solo track ‘Stop That‘, and the funk-laden ‘Fearmonger‘ with Daoud.

“The concept of ‘Few Good Things’ is the realization of self after a search for exterior fulfillment,” shared Saba on the inspiration behind the album’s title. “It is the satisfaction and completeness you gain by simply living a life that is yours. Few is a small number, but few is not lonely. In the face of all adversity, a few good things is recognizing and accepting blessings. Few is to count them, one by one – an empty glass is full of air, an empty bank is full of lessons., and an empty heart is full of memories. Few good things is to grow comfortable with the empty, and despite that, finding your fullness.”

On Friday, Feb 11 at 1:00pm AEST (Thursday Feb 10th at 9:00pm EST), Saba will premiere the album’s accompanying film. Produced by Partizan in association with SoundCloud and Pogi Studios, the poignant and touching film is directed and written by award-winning filmmaker C.T. Robert and explores the roots of Saba’s desire for exterior fulfillment and his recognition of the fulfillment he’s already felt by simply living a life that was meant for him with those he’s loved. Using Few Good Things as the sonic backdrop, the film weaves together a few selected tracks from the album with the collage of sounds one might expect to hear making their way through Saba’s hometown in the West Side of Chicago. WATCH THE TRAILER HERE.

Additionally, Saba announced tour dates for his headlining spring 2022 Back Home Tour for North America and Europe/U.K. The tour launches in Europe and the U.K. with support from English rapper, singer, and songwriter ENNY on U.K. dates and Dutch-Sudanese R&B singer-songwriter Gaidaa throughout Europe. The North American leg includes support from Charlotte-bred Dreamville rapper Lute and Los Angeles artist Amindi.

After two years of unforgettable sell out shows in Dubrovnik, mighty Manchester duo Solardo aim for a hat trick in 2022. In conjunction with Pollen Presents, Solardo announce their largest festival to date from September 23-27th: The pair curate their biggest ever line up with international tastemakers, showcasing some of the world’s top house and techno talent, a testament to the Manchester duo’s musical depth. The first wave of names include Marco Carola, FJAAK, Nicole Moudaber, Mall Grab, Maya Jane Coles, Vintage Culture, Nic Fanciulli, Lee Foss and many more. After multiple sell out shows at WHP, Circus Liverpool & London, Higher is now set to grow into a multi venue event across this historic city. Accommodation and ticket packages start at just £529, with party passes for what is one of Europe’s leading house and techno weekenders starting at only £249.

Dubrovnik is famous for its vibrancy, with enchanting views sweeping over the terracotta rooftops, distinctive cobbled Old Town streets, numerous plazas and museums that detail the rich tapestry of Croatia’s past. Many may also recognise the city from hit series and films like Game Of Thrones and Star Wars.. It is a truly unique backdrop for a series of world class house and techno parties and this now globally renowned weekender takes place across its most essential sites, from an ancient fortress to a panoramic terrace high above the city and overlooking the piercing blue Adriatic Sea.

Each location has its own charm and character and will be brought to life with world class sound and production. You can expect plenty of stunning views over the walled city and glistening sea, with breathtaking sunsets and sunrises every day as you enjoy beachside takeovers, pool and fortress parties and terrace sessions like no other.

House and techno duo Solardo lead the charge and since being crowned DJ Mag’s Best Breakthrough Act of 2016 and Best Duo of 2017 have never looked back. They have released on the likes of Elrow, Toolroom Records and Green Velvet’s Relief Records, have topped the Beatport charts and run their own vital Sola label. Now they bring their excellent curatorial skills to another mouthwatering Higher event.

They will be joined by a who’s who of house and techno talent from across the board, including Music On‘s Marco Carola, Berlin outfit FJAAK, Moodlabel head Nicole Moudaber, party starter Mall Grab, the always cultured Maya Jane Coles and global star Vintage Culture, as well as plenty more from wAFF, Lee Foss, Mason Maynard, Andrea Oliva, Ben Hemsley, Eli Brown, Shermanology, Nic Fanciulli and plenty more.

Away from the music there is a rich array of culture to explore around the city, whether you meander on foot through the lime-paved streets, travel via cable car up to the fortress or simply lay back on the beach and soak up the good vibes. For those wanting an even more unique experience, add ons include VIP upgrades and sea-faring boat parties.

There is wide variety of accommodation options for Higher, including the elegant suites, luxury spa and spectacular views of Valamar Lacroma, the beautiful Valamar Argosy Hotel with its fine restaurant, terrace, wellness zone and infinity pool, the exquisite 5* Valamar Collection Dubrovnik just a few minutes from the Old Town and Tirena Sunny Hotel, a quiet haven close to the historic centre of Dubrovnik.

Solardo Presents Higher Dubrovnik is a high class musical getaway in a beautiful location with some of the underground’s most vital DJ talent.

Teenage Mutants

by the partae February 3, 2022
written by the partae

Where are you currently based?

We are based in Frankfurt Germany.

How did Teenage Mutants form?

We have been friends for over 18 years now. We came together through early rave experiences in Frankfurt and started DJing around 2002 and some years later began to produce tracks. So 2010 we started the Project ‘Teenage Mutants’ with no idea where it was headed!

What’s been happening recently?

We are still in the pandemic so we are producing a lot of music and from time to time we have the luck to play a gig. Hopefully 2022 will be the change we need to get back to normal DJ Life.

Please tell us about your current projects:

End of 2020 we started our own label „TRAGEDIE“ a music and fashion brand. This takes most of the time at the moment. Beside this and Teenage Mutants we running an Event and Artist Agency called ‘Wir Sind Verboten’. We are running events in Germany, Europe and around the world.

What influences your sound and songwriting?

Mostly the 80’s. The melodies and baselines from that time are always a good inspiration to create something new. We don’t produce after rules. We make our own techno sound.

How do you usually go about writing music?

Mostly we start with a drum groove and just let it go. Synths and Sounds will be added step by step just how with the flow, how we will it.

How’s the overseas scene been treating you?

OZ was always a great experience. Actually one of the best countries to travel and to play. People are always smiling and having a good time. Really excited to come back.

You’re coming to Melbourne to play Shelter Festival, what do you have in store for this show?

We have 3 new EPs which are ready to be tested on the big floor. They will show the people our way of techno music.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

The Dream Academy – New Light

What do you like to do away from music?

Good Food and Good Wine.

What’s planned for 2022?

To play a lot of gigs and release our music and of course to play Shelter at Sea Works in Melbourne on 2 April!

SPRING LOADED TO KICK OFF IN MELB NEXT SAT! “THIS IS A GOOD NEWS STORY ABOUT HOW THERE’S ACTUALLY A FESTIVAL GOING AHEAD” PHIL JAMIESON

by the partae February 3, 2022
written by the partae

Spring Loaded has well and truly declared a triumphant return to live music, with the iconic Aussie festival set to storm Hastings Foreshore Reserve on the Mornington Peninsula next Saturday February 12, and there are tickets still available. The colossal lineup is dripping in 90s Aussie alt rock nostalgia and boasts a haul of the decade’s most celebrated acts.

Sharing the event program today, gates will open at 12.30pm and Screamfeeder will kick things off at 1.45pm, before The Fauves jump on at 2.30pm, Custard at 3.15pm, Killing Heidi at 4pm, Frenzal Rhomb at 5pm, Regurgitator at 6pm, You Am I at 7.15pm and Grinspoon at 8.45pm to headline the ultimate day of Aussie rock.

The man who engineered this ripper opportunity for us all to relive our youth and celebrate the return of live music, Empire’s Marc Christowski is thrilled to be getting another Spring Loaded event away, saying, “We are beyond excited to finally be able to stage Spring Loaded on the Mornington Peninsula, it’s going to be a massive explosion of rock after two years of uncertainty. We can’t wait to party like it’s 1996 and bring you the bands you love from the 90s!”

“We only managed two Spring Loaded events last year before everything went crazy,” explains Grinspoon frontman Phil Jamieson. “Both gigs were quite emotional because it had been so long since anyone had seen anyone, especially in the backstage area.  Not just artists and band members, but crew and people we love, so it was a massive reunion backstage. Seeing grey hairs and beards, it’s a long way from Homebake ’98, but the music hasn’t changed.  What was really special about those gigs was the support and comraderie between all the groups and then to see a crowd that was excited to be there as well.”
Pumped to hit the Spring Loaded stage at Hastings Foreshore Reserve, Jamieson says,“I can’t actually believe it’s real.  You Am I, Regurgitator, the best of the best – Frenzal, Killing Heidi, Custard,The Fauves, Screamfeeder… so you know, there’s nothing really bad about it, it’s hard to hate, and then you get me doing silly dancing and clapping, what could possibly go wrong?!  Hope to see you all there, this is a good news story about how there’s actually a festival going ahead!”

Covering all bases, the festival will be bustling with craft beer and an enviable collection of the locale’s cherry-picked food trucks. Spring Loaded is a fully licensed 18+ event, strictly no BYO alcohol.  It is an outdoor event and will go ahead rain, hail or shine.  No tables, tents, sun shelters or umbrellas are permitted, punters are urged to bring ponchos/raincoats and gumboots if rain is forecast.  Picnic rugs and low camp chairs are permitted, as well as snack food in small cooler bags, sealed bottles of water, and there will be water refill stations. And with onsite parking available at the point of entry, there’s no excuse not to come and enjoy a rocking day out on the glorious Mornington Peninsula!

The Spring Loaded festival will be held with a commitment to a COVID Safe environment.  Festival organisers will work closely with and comply with all requirements of the public health authorities in respect of this show.

There are tickets still available from Ticketek and Oztix.

PRAISE FOR THINGS TAKE TIME, TAKE TIME

triple j – Feature Album
Triple R – Feature Album
PBS FM – Feature Album
2SER – Feature Album
Edge Radio – Feature Album
SYN FM – Feature Album

“Her most intimate to date… There’s truly nothing Courtney Barnett can’t do.” – triple j

“Worth waiting for, waiting for.” – Uncut, 9/10

“Her brilliant third album, Things Time Time, Take Time, is her most reserved and thoughtful yet, full of everyday observation and wry wisdom — it grows slowly, but pay attention and you’ll grow with it” –
Rolling Stone

“For a record about captive states- isolation, anxiety, romantic hope – Things Take Time, Take Time knows how to move.”
– Mojo, ★★★★

“Things Take Time, Take Time is a quietly radical next step for the acclaimed alternative-rock singer and guitarist. The 10 songs, notable for their hand-made textures and evocative detail, have an intimate, sustained mood.” – The Age / Sydney Morning Herald

“A study both of the simple certainties of life and the big thing that comes after it. But in Barnett’s hands, death is not something to fear; merely something else to ponder every now and again, no bigger or more important than love or nature or parenthood or faith.” – The New York Times

“Barnett, known for her insightful, poetic lyrics and almost dead-pan performance style, is a modern-day Americana star. In the lineage of Patti Smith or Iggy Pop, Barnett captivates like a spell” – American Songwriter

“A newfound peak from an artist that will never stop furthering herself musically and personally.”
– Pilerats

“Her most adventurous body of work yet, Things Take Time, Take Time, marks a new chapter for Barnett. An introspective and intimate release, the record documents her musings on love, patience, healing, and self-discovery.” – Beat Magazine

“Barnett’s return is characterised by her much-prized candour, as she refines her ability to take a slice out of the best and worst parts of life and offer it up to listeners on a silver platter of indie glory.” – Blunt Magazine

“An album appreciating the little things – trees sprouting leaves, phone calls, late-night ruminations – which, inevitably, turn into the big things: gratitude, friendship, love.” – MTV

ANONYMOUS CLUB, the feature documentary from Danny Cohen that pulls back the curtain on  enigmatic singer-songwriter Courtney Barnett, will screen in cinemas across Australia from Thursday  March 17. This follows the news that ANONYMOUS CLUB will have its international premiere at the  prestigious SXSW Film Festival, Austin, Texas from March 11-19, 2022.

ANONYMOUS CLUB is the antithesis of a rock biography. With unprecedented, intimate access to  the private life of Courtney Barnett, this innovative and stylised 16mm feature documentary follows  a paradoxically introverted performer and anti-influencer, who, at the height of success, is ready to  walk away. Three years in the making, and all shot on 16mm film, Danny Cohen’s feature  documentary reveals a woman who finds power in sharing her vulnerability. Recording her  innermost thoughts on a dictaphone, Courtney begins her slow acceptance of Danny Cohen’s  camera. This unique filming process mirrors Courtney’s gradual search for purpose and emergence  as an artist embracing her place in the world.

ANONYMOUS CLUB had its world premiere at the Melbourne International Film Festival in 2021,  and went on to screen at the Sydney Film Festival, Cinefest Oz and Brisbane International Film  Festival. Audiences around Australia, will have the chance to see this compelling and cinematic documentary on the big screen when its theatrical season commences on March 17.

Writer/director Danny Cohen comments “After three years on (and off) the road, and a blurry few  months in the edit suite with legendary editor Ben Hall, it’s wild to think that piece by piece, I’ve  documented a story; one of a searching woman, of tremendous personal growth, and limitless  talent. I’ll be forever grateful to Courtney for this experience, and I’m looking forward to sharing the  film with audiences here in Australia and internationally.”

Producers Philippa Campey and Samantha Dinning add “It’s been such a joy and privilege to work  with Danny on this beautifully filmed, and thoughtfully considered feature doc. Danny’s creative  collaboration with Courtney – one of our brightest and most inspiring musicians – is unique. She’s an  everyday person living an extraordinary life, and Danny’s ability to bring the intimacy of their  creative friendship to the big screen offers insights and reflections for us all.”

Executive producer Sue Maslin comments “This film will of course delight Courtney‘s fans but it  offers so much more than her extraordinary music. She takes us on a journey through a confusing  and at times dark period in her life where she ultimately finds a sense of purpose in her creativity – even if she hasn’t worked everything out! We have all been through bumpy times over the past  couple of years and her story is a tonic, told with the honesty and humour we could all use a bit  more of right now”.

The March release of ANONYMOUS CLUB coincides with Courtney Barnett’s Australian tour dates in  support of her recently released album Things Take Time, Take Time.

The Stained Daisies

by the partae February 3, 2022
written by the partae

Where are you currently based?

All four of us are based a stone’s throw from each other in Coburg, Melbourne. Me (Jack), Dan and Jayden live together and Bartos lives a block or so away.

How did you first start playing music?
Dan, Jayden and I all started fucking about with music in Grafton, which is a small country town in northern NSW. We had a few jams, wrote a few tunes, picked up Aidan, our drummer in Bega, and moved to the big smoke.

What’s been happening recently?
During the back end of last year, post lockdown, we did a few really good gigs performing our last release – ‘Jazz Club.’ We launched Jazz Club at Bar Open in Fitzroy which was potentially our best gig yet. We also supported Dr Sures Unusual Practice and Barefoot Bowls Club, a couple of great local bands, to round out 2021. We were then prepped to play River Sounds, a festival in Bellingen with some great acts involved including Regurgitator and Baker Boy, however, Omicron had other plans. We also had a big tour booked, to launch this upcoming EP – ‘Give It To Em,’ but alas, that has also been pushed back. Ah well.

Your latest single ‘Individuality (Is Fine As Long As We Do It Together’) is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting?
I was reading a heap of stuff during all the Covid lockdowns down here in Melbourne and I stumbled upon some stuff that intrigued me about group identities, the individual, duality and that sort of stuff. I still don’t know if I properly understand it all but I found it all intriguing nonetheless. So that partially influenced my lyrical approach to the tune. I also stole the title of the song from a M*A*S*H episode, where Frank Burns replies to Hawkeye – “Nothing’s wrong with individuality, as long as we all do it together.” I thought it was clever and so I pinched it and slightly reworked it into the tune and mashed (pardon the pun) it up with some of the other ideas that were floating about in my brain. Dr Sures Unusuals Practice also influenced me in lending my hand at some more punky vibed tunes.

How did you go about writing the single?
I woke up, had the chorus in my head straight away and then just went down into our home studio thing in Coburg and got our little track recorder out and recorded it all. It was just a rough demo but I wrote and recorded it in about two hours. It was one of those ones that sort of just fell out of me with very little effort. I then got Dan to sing a few different lines in the song for dynamics and Jayden put some harmonies on it and Roberts your mum’s brother.

Where and when did you record/produce/master and who with?
After I’d recorded the demo and that, we decided it’d potentially be a cool single so we decided to make it some sort of a release. We had a couple of other tracks that had a similar punky, political vibe so we pieced them all together and went and recorded with Maxy from Cellar Sessions Studios in Coburg North. Absolute legend of a human. Aidan, aka Frank Falcon, aka Tiny Barbutos Bartman, our drummer, is also a hell of a mixer, masterer, producer person so he did all the behind the scenes mixing and mastering.

How did you approach the recording process?
We took a fairly stripped back approach to this one. All four of us just got into a room, recorded the instrumentation after a few takes, and then overdubbed the vocals, harmonies and a few of Jaydens guitar parts.

Your forthcoming EP ‘Give It To Em’ is on the way, what can we expect?
Yep. So it’s a four-track EP with one song written and sung by me and three songs written as a band with Dan taking lead vocals. You can expect some fairly in your face, punky sort of tunes sprinkled with a bit of groove. It is a fairly politically driven EP, particularly some of Dan’s songs where he touches on ScoMo (godboy), the Murray Darling basin fiasco, Indigenous issues and the like. I won’t go into too much depth about his lyrics because I don’t wanna speak for him. I will say this though; give it to em.

Who are you listening to at the moment?
I’ve been absolutely thrashing 90’s hip-hop at the moment which doesn’t really add up to the sort of vibe of what we’ve just recorded but there ya go. Heaps of Biggie, Raekwon, Cypress Hill, Dre. I’ve also been digging Kanye’s new one – Donda. We have also been giving Dr Sures most recent album a fairly good go. Hmmm, what else? We all loved the Get Back doco so that got us back into a bit of a Beatles phase. Blaze Foley, James Taylor, And Townes Van Zandt have also featured over the past month or so.

What do you like to do away from music?
Read, surf, and hang with mates. To be fair, a large chunk of all our lives is dominated by music whether that is writing, gigging, mixing, jamming or going to other peoples gigs.

What’s planned for 2022?
It’s hard to plan much with the whole spicy cough situation but we are going to try and re-organise our Give It To Em tour for later in the year. We are also looking to record our second full-length album which I think is going to be a bit slower, and more ‘acousticy’ driven stuff. Who knows though. We are also going to drop a couple of singles not long after the release of ‘Give It To Em’ I think, so keep a lookout for those.

Favourite food and place to hang out?

A lot of my mates work in this little section of Johnston street in Abbotsford in a couple of breweries and restaurants – Bodriggy Brewing and Rita’s Pizzeria. So those two places are pretty hard to beat. We also have a couple of really nice local restaurants right at our doorstep – McDonald’s and Hungry Jacks. I’m not sure if you’ve heard of them but yeah, they’re pretty good. Tasty, cheap, healthy. Ticks all the boxes.
