Where are you currently based?

I am currently based in Etobicoke, ON (just outside of Toronto), but Hamilton, ON is my hometown.

How did you start playing music?

I got started playing music in my hometown at Hamilton’s yearly music awards. Each year they held a Rising Star competition for up and coming artists to enter, and when I was about 15 I decided to give it a go with a song I had written. Having grown up playing piano, I always enjoyed being musical, but had never performed for the public out of fear.

That year I ended up placing third, and I don’t know what it was about that moment, but I decided right then and there that I wanted to pursue music as a career. A music degree and a bunch of milestones later, I’d say it’s going pretty good so far!

What’s been happening recently?

Recently I’ve been doing a lot of writing! The whole “pandemic” thing has really dwindled down the opportunity to perform live, so I’ve been trying to use the time to figure out what I want to say musically and work out a new show and material for 2022!

Your new single ‘Dial Tone’ is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting?

The idea behind “Dial Tone” actually came from an episode of Letter Kenny. It’s slang for “a dull, boring person”: ie) John has all the personality of a dial tone. When I heard it used in that show I always thought that would make a good song title. Fast forward a few years and a couple boring conversations I couldn’t escape from; “Dial Tone” was born!

How did you go about writing ‘Dial Tone’?

When I decided to finally write it, I reached out to my friends Jesse Slack and Daryl Scott to co-write it with me because I knew the way they wrote would be a good fit for the tune. We really wanted to go for something lazy feeling but also sassy and luckily this was one of those songs that just seemed to come together really easily.

Where and when did you record/produce/master the single and who with?

“Dial Tone” was actually recorded this July! I was so excited about the song after we wrote it in March that I wanted to get it out right away. So I reached out to my producer Jeff Dalziel (who also mastered it) and we got cracking! Everything was recorded at his house, other than parts from the players that didn’t live locally who just recorded at their own houses. It’s crazy how much you don’t need a studio anymore to get the job done.

How did you approach the recording process?

This recording process was approached in what I would call a very typical modern country way. I sent Jeff a demo of the song with the idea and vision I had for it and he worked his magic! By the time I came to record my vocal, the track was basically completely put together. Atypical to that, is me getting to play the acoustic line in the song and add some creative input, which I really enjoyed getting to do on this track.

What’s the weirdest gig you’ve ever played and why?

OH MAN, just one? Lol. I’ve played in a few dive bars where I’ve gotten to see some pretty interesting things but I think the weirdest gig I ever played was the first gig I ever did with my band.

Right when I was first starting out, my college roommate, who I admittedly didn’t know very well, had her relatives in our dorm one time and they asked me if I wanted to play a private party they were throwing. I told them I’d love to, but my band didn’t yet have enough material to fill an evening. We knew 6 songs, to be exact. However, they said that that would be enough and hired me for the evening.

A few weeks later, my country band and I showed up to their event and proceeded to play 3, 2-song sets, where in between they had a classical pianist perform. It ended up being a really fun night but it was definitely the weirdest event I’ve ever performed.

How do you prepare for shows?

To be honest, I don’t really have a ritual that I do! Performing has become pretty second nature to me now (trust me, it never used to be) and usually I just show up and do my thing. I am lucky enough to have a band that I’ve been playing with for years, so that really takes away any worry that I might get before stepping on the stage.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

I am ALWAYS listening to Kacey Musgraves. I am pretty sure she will be my favourite artist until the day I die. But aside from her new album, I’ve been really digging what Ingrid Andress is saying, as well as Tennille Townes.

What do you like to do away from music?

I really like being creative, so in my time off I find myself doing things like scrapbooking, photography, web design, interior design, etc. Pretty much anything with the word “design” after it lol. I’m also a huge environmentalist, so I’ll spend a lot of time trying to make my lifestyle a bit more waste free, or educating myself on ways an individual can create a positive impact on sustaining this big ol’ body of water we call earth.

What’s planned for the remainder of 2021 going into 2022?

Most of 2021 will be about getting “Dial Tone” to as many ears as possible, but I will say that I’ve also got a little EP in the works that I’m hoping to get out to the world sometime in 2022.

Favourite food and place to hangout?

Ouuuu. A few different answers. My favourite place to “get” food is Valiant’s in Barrie, ON. My favourite food in general is pizza, and my favourite place to hangout I’d have to say, is my local watering hole TJ Osheas Irish Snug in Etobicoke, ON.

FANCYNORMAL Release Pop-Bop Pavlova piece ‘FIASCO’

by the partae September 30, 2021
written by the partae

A BIT OF A FIASCO: FANCYNORMAL to release Pop-Bop Pavlova piece, FIASCO

Miscommunication, misinterpretation & misunderstanding, well, we’ve all been there, and Melbourne duo FancyNormal have summed it all up in their latest pop-spritzer bop: FIASCO.

It’s a messy and chaotic ode to miscommunication & trying to understand your significant other. Like being a contestant in a rigged gameshow, where ‘every door you choose you lose’, FancyNormal raises a pinot noir to those who are just tired of guessing what the other is thinking in a relationship that lacks verbalisation.

The duo have had a momentous first year previously releasing their debut EP ‘Starters & Appetizers’ and an engaging remix EP release with Skio Music for their single, Ultra Passion. FIASCO is the cherry on top of what has been an incredible year of releases for Fancy.

Speaking about the single, the band says “it’s not an anti-lovesong per se, but more of an anti-rose-coloured-glasses view of what a real relationship looks like.” Guaranteed dance-a-bility, the track will make you feel heard and maybe even say omfg.

Feel like you’re just spinning a wheel, hoping you’ll open the correct suitcase sometimes? This is the song for you – a power-bop ballad filled with plenty to get grooving to. FIASCO will be released on all platforms this September 30.

COURTNEY BARNETT Shares new single & video ‘Write A List Of Things To Look Forward To’ New album Things Take Time, Take Time out November 12

by the partae September 30, 2021
written by the partae
Credit: Mia Mala McDonald

One of the shimmering highlights of her upcoming album Things Take Time, Take Time, Courtney Barnett’s new single ‘Write A List of Things to Look Forward To’ is gorgeous and poignant; a joyful and melodic love letter to friends and friendship.

‘Write A List of Things to Look Forward To’ takes its name from the technique one of Barnett’s friends advocated for her to get her out of a depressive funk, and paints a bittersweet picture of small wins and the circle of life. “Nobody knows why we keep trying”, she sings, “And so on it goes, I’m looking forward to the next letter that I’m gonna get from you”. It strikes the exact chord between wistfulness and acceptance and points to a deeper level of complexity in Barnett’s songwriting. “I found a deeper communication with people in my life – deeper conversations”, Barnett notes of this new phase. “And a new level of gratitude for friendships that had been there for so long that I had maybe taken for granted”.

The latest track also arrives with a wholesome and heart-warming video by Christina Xing, featuring Barnett as the sender and recipient of a series of gifts and letters. You can view that below.

SYDNEY DUO DEKLEYN RETURN WITH THE SUMMER-TINGED POP STYLINGS OF ‘OVER AGAIN’

by the partae September 30, 2021
written by the partae

“Blending both organic and electronic instrumentation with absolute ease, as well as those infectiously catchy lyrics and melodies floating about, it’s clear to us that dekleyn have well and truly found their groove.” – Acid Stag

“…Nostalgic without being morose, blending melancholy and hopefulness.”- EARMILK

“Just another reason to get excited about you two. y’all are producing such a ridiculous amount of songs and never skip on quality.” – Abby Butler, triple j

BUY/STREAM: DEKLEYN – OVER AGAIN

Returning with their first solo single of 2021, and following the release of their 2020 self-titled debut album, today Sydney duo Dekleyn serve up their infectious pop single ‘Over Again’. Steadily making a name for themselves since 2017, the talented duo have independently released three EPs, in addition to their debut album, and a series of standalone singles, together boasting over 7 million streams across platforms. Known for their smooth vocals with heavy-hitting choruses, combining electronic elements and synths with guitar leads and melodies, the pair have strived to broaden the horizons of conventional indie-pop.

Teaming up with Mark Zito (Fractures) on co-production duties, ‘Over Again’ delivers a truly international pop palette, with Justin Kleyn’s vocals taking centre stage, alongside refined guitar licks, and a driving beat that delivers an equally perfect soundtrack to a warm summer’s night, or cosy winter’s morning.

Taking the story of a love that wasn’t destined to be, Dekleyn create an uplifting take on the memories of a past relationship, sharing “’Over Again’ is a fun upbeat tune about the ups and downs of a relationship, the rekindling of an old fire, and the attempt to make it all work out. It’s about making the best of a bad situation and trying to be in the moment and take it all as it comes.”

Made up of Justin Kleyn and Matthew DeCelis, Dekleyn have seen a plethora of support from all corners of the globe, whilst amassing a solid fan base with their ever evolving indie pop soundscape. Already championed by both triple j and Unearthed, as well as tastemakers such as EARMILK, Acid Stag, Beautiful Buzzz, Atwood Magazine, Going Solo, and more, the duo are continuing to impress with their effervescent productions and take on songwriting. Whilst recently signing with Raida Artists for bookings, Dekleyn have been prolific in their touring, with support slots for the likes of Confidence Man, Fergus James, Fractures, CLYPSO and Angus Dawson, whilst selling out their ‘Thrive’ EP launch show in Sydney.

Dekleyn’s new single ‘Over Again’ is out now.

MOLLY PAYTON SHARES LATEST SINGLE ‘JANUARY SUMMERS’ NEW MINI-ALBUM SLACK OUT THIS FRIDAY, OCTOBER 1 VIA THE ORCHARD

“Modern rock anthems…’Porcupine’ is a breakthrough moment”

“Her songs are rich, accomplished and instantly relatable”
Dork

Molly Payton releases ‘January Summers’, the latest offering from her forthcoming mini-album Slack, out Friday October 1 via The Orchard. LISTEN TO ‘JANUARY SUMMERS’ HERE.

The London-based 20-year-old has recently returned from a long stint in her homeland of Aotearoa / New Zealand, where she created Slack remotely with her frequent collaborator Oli Barton-Wood (Nilüfer Yanya, Porridge Radio, Sorry), as well as Grammy-award winning producer Jimmy Hogarth (Amy Winehouse) and British songwriter Benjamin Francis Leftwich. She is set to play upcoming festivals including Liverpool Sound City, Pitchfork Music Festival Paris and Amsterdam’s London Calling, as well as joining Oscar Lang on his October UK tour.

Of the new single, Molly comments: “I wrote January Summers near the end of last year when I was missing New Zealand and all of the people I’d been close with before I moved to the UK. I was initially just wanting to write this joyous ode to being 15/16 and doing everything for the first time. Going to your first party, the first time you hear your favourite song, the first time you tell someone you like them and so on. Even musically I pulled influence from bands that my big brother used to play when he was driving me places at that age, like the really messy surf-rock guitars and simple happy melodies. But it ended up also being about how complicated everything becomes the older you get – How I miss the joy and anticipation that came with the lack of direction I had when I was younger”.

‘January Summers‘ follows earlier singles set to appear on the coming mini-album, including ‘Honey’ (recently BBC Radio 1 Introducing’s track of the week), ‘You Cut Me So Much Slack’, and ‘When Skies Were Always Blue’. Slack follows Molly’s breakout EP Porcupine, released last Autumn to wide critical acclaim, including Pigeons & Planes, Dork, The Line of Best Fit, Steve Lamacq at 6Music and Jack Saunders at BBC Radio 1. It also caught the ears of fellow artists, including Arlo Parks, who chose Molly to appear alongside her takeover of Spotify’s ‘Our Generation’ playlist, commenting of Molly’s music “there was just this sense of rawness and earnestness that really reminded me of things that I’ve lived myself”.

Slack was largely completed during Molly’s return to her homeland of Aotearoa / New Zealand, which she left at age 16 to move to the UK. Originally intended to be a short stay, her visit there was extended to an eight-month stay as UK lockdowns prevailed. As well as spending time with the friends and places she left as a teenager, it also fuelled her resolution to reconnect with the memories and tribulations of her past, and process them through her songwriting. Revolving around  the adage of looking back in order to move forward, she describes her coming output as “honest, reflective and hopeful.” Her time back home also allowed her to rediscover the catharsis of playing live, with Molly performing a series of full-capacity headline gigs against the backdrop of Aotearoa / New Zealand’s low Covid rates and eased restrictions.

‘January Summers’ is out now, buy/stream it here.

Dyno

by the partae September 29, 2021
written by the partae

Dyno is a techno DJ and producer based in Italy whose been releasing music since the ‘90s, and worked with labels ranging from UMEK’s 1605 to Coyu’s Suara. He also runs a label called Dyrwalk and via the imprint recently put out a new deep, dark and hypnotic release called Selva Oscura, which featured two of his own tracks. Excited to learn more about him, we invited Dyno to run through a few questions…

Hi Dyno, it’s great to be talking with you today. Where are you currently based?

Hi everyone, nice to meet you. I’m based in Pesaro, Italy, which is a small city between the sea and hills. In the beginning of my career, I moved my studio around between basements, garages and other buildings, but now I’ve a permanent set up in the hills near my home.

Could you describe your sound and style of music?

I’m very attached to analogue and old school sounds, but also blend in new digital sounds.

Mainly I produce techno, but my style is not always focused on just one style, especially when I’m experimenting with my analogue synths. Usually, my tracks are quite dark with a lot of energy, but I’m open minded, and make what feels right in the moment.

How did you first discover electronic music, and who are some of your main influences?

When I was a child, I loved listening to radio stations using my headphones. I was always excited by electronic sounds, which I later discovered were made using synthesisers. Around this time, my favourite song was “Stripped” by Depeche Mode. Even today, I still get goose bumps when listening to it, especially at two and half minutes, where it’s so good that I completely lose my mind. I also got influenced by other tracks such as “Radio Ga Ga” by Queen, “Save A Prayer” by Duran Duran, “21st Century Boy” by Sigue Sigue Sputnik, and lots more…

One day in a local music shop, I asked for them to recommend me some CDs of good electronic music. It was this point when I first heard “Phaedra” by Tangerine Dream, and from then I had no doubt that electronic music would be my future passion.

I understand that you recently dropped a new EP called Selva Oscura, could you tell us about the tracks and concept?

Selva Oscura consists of two deep and dark tracks with solid reverberation, searching for a deep and detailed sensation to impress the listener. This production was born from reminiscing about my passion for vinyl, and thinking about the illegal raves I DJ’ed at in the ‘90s.

What’s your studio setup like, and what are your favourite bits of equipment?

I’m now stable in my new studio located the middle of the hills, and I’m so happy that hopefully I won’t have to move it again.  I design it meticulously, taking into account all the acoustic details plus shape of the room. It’s a pentagonal room with a 32 channel analogue mixer, three different sets of studio monitors, Audioscope Spectrum analyser and several original analogue synthesisers from Roland, Korg, Moog, Yamaha and others. I also use multiple effect pedals plus some other outboard gear, and I like using my analogue sequencer and modular synths. To complete the setup, behind my studio seat is a wall with thousands of vinyl records.

Can you tell us about your label Dyrwalk, as I’d live to know when you set it up, and which artists you have worked with?

Dyrwalk was a project started in 2010 with the aim of mainly releasing my own tracks. The label is a place where I could release music that I wanted to release without having to make tweaks or changes requested by other people, and have the freedom to experiment with new sounds and ideas. I’ve also released with many other labels, and across all those imprints I’ve worked with UMEK, Oliver Koletzki, Max Cooper, Sisko Electrofanatik, Solee, T78, Alex Dolby, Meat Katie, John Fleming, Khainz, Alex di Stefano and many more…

What other labels have you worked with, and what’s the release you are most proud of?

I’ve worked with lots of labels in my career including 1605, Suara, Bush Records, Traum, Yoshitoshi, Global Underground, Gain Records, JOOF Recordings, Mondo Groove, Hell Yeah, Mantra Vibes, Incorrect and many others…

To be honest, I’m most proud of two publications that are not actually techno. I like to call them my two tripping albums, as they are both very atmospheric, and I dedicated a lot of time to working on them. I’ve listed them both below…

Dyno – Pic Nic Nello Spazio – Hell Yeah Recordings

Dyno – Synthònia – Mondo Groove

What do you like to do away from music?

I’m a passionate collector and player of vintage videogames, so whenever I’ve some free time, I start to play!

What’s planned for the remainder of 2021 going into 2022?

In a few weeks, I’ll be releasing an EP on Gain Records with four new tracks, then at the end of the year I’ll be putting out a collection of my favourite productions from 2021, which will also include two previously unpublished tracks. In 2022 I’ll start to work more on experimental electronic music, which I’ll do in parallel to my new techno releases.

For anyone visiting your hometown, can you recommend a good place for food and favourite place to hang out?

If you want to eat good, and genuine Italian food, then here are my suggestions for good restaurants in the hills near my home Osteria del Giogo, Il Pergolato dalla Maria and La Vacchia Cantina. Nearer the sea, you can also find several good fish restaurants. I also love going into the some of the small taverns in the historical centre of Pesaro. If you want to have get some scenic views of the landscape, then you should also visit port side of the town.

Thanks for chatting today, is there anything else you would like to add before we finish?

Thanks for the interview, greetings also to all The Partae readers, and of course to people that support my music. It was a pleasure. Thanks Again.

CRESCENDOLL DEDICATES HER NLV PRESENTS MIX TO ONE OF WARRANG’S MOST IMPORTANT CULTURAL SPACES

by the partae September 29, 2021
written by the partae

Throughout 2021, Nina Las Vegas’ curated events moniker NLV Presents has put together an ongoing, curated mix series that aims to highlight some Australia’s best and brightest underground DJ’s.

We’re now six months into the series, with a new mix released via Apple Music in the last week of each month. Last month, Wiradjuri woman Kritty took over, blasting a high-energy collection of tracks that reflect NLV Records’ ethos of repping underground club music.

In September, Gamiliraay woman and sistergirl Emma Bastable AKA crescendoll is setting the pace.

NLV PRESENTS: CRESCENDOLL – “TRIBUTE TO THE BLOCK (1973—2015)” [DJ MIX]

Visuals by Kris Andrew Small

Emma is a Trans and First Nations advocate and solicitor based in Warrang (Sydney). During the day, she works as a solicitor at a community legal centre. She works predominantly on cases centred around homelessness, discrimination law, and policing – particularly in relation to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

By night, she can be found both behind and in front of the decks at a range of electronic and queer club nights across the town.

As a DJ, Emma’s connection to music runs deep. She is interested in the idea of dance music as rebirth, and the power music holds in being able to construct and deconstruct some of life’s bigger themes, including death, creation, destruction and healing.

Her passion for representation remains central to everything she does, which is why her mix for NLV Presents is so important. “This is a mix recorded in Warrang during a period of really heavy news and lockdown,” Emma explains.

“I’ve also been doing a lot of thinking around the role of club music and dance in exploring and connecting with my identity, as a sistergirl and queer and trans woman, and the ways in which clubs and dancefloors serve as spaces in which we can think about and create new ways of being and existing, but which also are inherently political and can be problematic in terms of gentrification, lack of accessibility, and white, cis, able-bodied bodies being privileged.

“In this spirit, I wanted to dedicate this mix to The Block in Redfern and recognise the pivotal role it’s played in celebrations of First Nations culture, art and music, and the real trauma our community has experienced in its redevelopment and the ousting of activists, including the Aboriginal Tent Embassy.

“I invite the listener to remember that, pretty much wherever we are, we exist on stolen land, to recognise the role that bla(c)k people have played in the development of club music, and to celebrate the achievements of POC DJs, event organisers, and dancers. Hope you enjoy!”

Emma’s mix expertly blends sounds of resistance with a ferocity that can only be felt by something with such purpose. Tracks from Ariel Zetina, Merca Bae, Tygapaw, DJ SWISHA and Kush Jones sit neatly in this expertly tempered mix.

NLV Presents has continued to thrive due to Nina Las Vegas’ passion for bringing the sounds of the underground to our ears, with Kritty’s mix being another example of how much amazing talent is right at home.

Nina Las Vegas’ passion for bringing the sounds of the underground to life has remained central to the NLV Presents ethos. With a long and extremely fruitful presence in Australia’s underground, NLV Presents has historically brought some of Australia’s now heavy hitter’s to stages and clubs around the country, featuring Tkay Maidza, Cosmo’s Midnight, Swick, Wave Racer, Motez, Touch Sensitive, What So Not and more. On the overseas front, NLV Presents: International Edition’s saw the likes of Eclair Fifi, Sam Tiba, UNiiQU3, Djemba Djemba, Monki and MSSNGNO tour Australia for the first time.

OVERMONO Share new single ‘Bby’ Announce Diamond Cut / Bby 12″ Out Nov 19 via XL Recordings

by the partae September 29, 2021
written by the partae
Praise for Overmono

“They’ve signed to XL, collaborated with Joy Orbison, remixed Thom Yorke, appeared in GTA, and generally seem to be the UK techno group of the moment. Their fabric Presents mix, then, comes at an auspicious moment where they seem poised to approach chart-threatening, Bicep-style territory.” – Resident Advisor

“‘So U Kno,’ the Overmono track that opens the mix, is particularly excellent: an iron-clad 2-step battleship with an irresistible hook, the steel of techno colliding against the rubbery skitter of UKG.” – Pitchfork

“Brothers Tom & Ed Russell (also known as Truss and Tessela), two of the most prolific UK producers of this generation, who’ve written some of the most memorable techno tracks of the past half decade, add another exciting release to their already praiseworthy legacy. If you ever asked yourself how a peak time UK techno set would sound like after more than a year of absence from clubs, here lies the answer.” – The Quietus

“The UK’s current hot dance duo extract serious mileage out of an insistent, imperceptibly bending three-note motif, before some skull-massaging chords arrive to roll your eyes back.”
– The Guardian

Today, XL Recordings / Remote Control Records announce the release of Diamond Cut/Bby, the new 12” from London duo Overmono. Out mid-November, you can listen to ‘Bby’ HERE.

Over the course of the pandemic, Overmono have undoubtedly risen to become the most sought-after dance act of 2021. Shows at festivals like Greenman, We Out Here, Field Day and Gala were all hailed as highlights, as was their sold out, packed-out headline show at Village Underground earlier this month. Their track ‘So U Kno’ is the anthem of the summer and their ‘Fabric Presents Overmono’ compilation and mix is being hailed as one of the best the revered London institution has released.

Used as the closing track of their set at the Village Underground, ‘Bby’ is a natural follow on from this activity, a brooding, stripped back 2-step banger with an infectious vocal hook – perfect for autumn and winter raving.

Speaking on the release, the duo say: “For the past 4 years our studio has been in an old magazine printing building. after moving in we ripped up the carpets to expose this amazing wooden flooring and thought to ourselves – ‘why the fuck would anyone cover this up?’ – turns out ink from the old print presses that used to be there still comes up through the floor and makes these grimy swirling patterns that slowly shift over weeks and months.

Earlier this year we found out the building was being sold for re-development. We had two weeks to get out. Packing down the studio was left till the very last night and we spent the rest of the time making one last tune there. The chords in ‘Bby’ are those ink stains. Woozy and morphing, feeling like they might swallow you up.”

Hovvdy share video for new single ‘Blindsided’

by the partae September 29, 2021
written by the partae

UPCOMING NEW ALBUM TRUE LOVE
OUT THIS FRIDAY, OCTOBER 1 ON GRAND JURY

Portrait credit: Pooneh Ghana
Hovvdy, the Texas duo comprised of Charlie Martin and Will Taylor, have shared a Hayden Hubner-directed video for their new single ‘Blindsided‘.

“There was a huge magnolia tree across the street from the house where I grew up. I have this vivid memory of a storm rolling in and climbing up so high I stuck my head out the top. This song is filled with similar memories, the kind that push and pull you. I was so scared and I was so happy” says Charlie Martin.

Hovvdy is gearing up to release their new album, True Love, this Friday, October 1 via Grand Jury. The Andrew Sarlo (Bon Iver, Big Thief) co-produced album has received support from Pitchfork, NPR, The FADER, Consequence of Sound, Stereogum, Paste, UPROXX, Under The Radar, and Brooklyn Vegan.

Last year, Charlie Martin impulsively wrote T-R-U-E L-O-V-E in all caps across the top of what would become the title track of his and Will Taylor’s fourth Hovvdy album. The on-the-nose instinct encapsulates the LP’s elemental look at relationships – familial, romantic, friendly – and that desire to capture them in a bottle. Since the creation of their last album, both Charlie and Will have married their partners. Will became a father.

A nod to their roots and a reach for more, True Love maturely embraces the best of the duo’s hyper-genuine, chin-up qualities developed over the past seven years. Charlie and Will first met at a baseball game while touring with other bands, both as drummers. Back home in Austin, the pair connected over shared sports-centric upbringings in Dallas and, most prominently, likeminded batches of solo songwriting. The interlocking tracks would become 2016 LP Taster, introducing a comforting sonic push-and-pull continued in the innate melodies of Cranberry (2018) and the propulsive storytelling of breakthrough Heavy Lifter (2019).

Fourth album True Love follows a surprisingly folksy and beautifully determined course, just hinting at the lo-fi layers of the Austin-based project’s DIY origins. Co-produced by the genre-morphing Andrew Sarlo (Nick Hakim, Big Thief, Bon Iver), the acoustically-driven, forward-looking songwriters’ statement stamps Hovvdy’s debut with Grand Jury Music.

Charlie and Will add: “This collection of songs feels to us like a return to form, writing and recording songs for ourselves and loved ones. Spending less energy consumed with how people may respond freed us up to put our efforts into creating an honest, heartfelt album.”

Throughout 2020, the band visited Sarlo’s small Los Angeles studio to put down their biggest- sounding record yet. Trusted guidance freed Charlie and Will to play to their strengths on essential elements – an upright piano, an acoustic guitar, a few keyboards. Songs harken to the duo’s Southern totems of Townes Van Zandt and Lucinda Williams, with longtime collaborator Ben Littlejohn adding pedal steel and dobro for subtle drawl. Will calls True Love “the other side of the coin” from past LP Heavy Lifter’s tweaked pop, reflecting instead on the sturdy strums of sophomore Cranberry.

“Sarlo heard things in our individual production styles that we might otherwise feel self-conscious about, but he would lean into them,” says Charlie. “We knew we could come in with a very stripped- down acoustic guitar song and it would end up being expansive and vast. I felt really confident in letting this record be as tender and beautiful as we could make it, knowing there would always be a layer of darkness in there.”

‘Blindsided’ embodies the bespoke Hovvdy balance. Charlie’s waltzing piano lines and classical bedding make way for punctuated vocal assurances. Will’s textured guitar downbeats also softly power syncopated storytelling on ‘Lake June‘. Channeling the warmth of new fatherhood, he repeats “I love you so much” at the song’s center.
In the exuberant rush of title track ‘True Love‘, Charlie references his old Cranberry-era song ‘Colorful‘ – a wizened callback to a growing catalog, forever morphing in hindsight. Shaking off any nostalgic haze, the new album’s immediate production places their detailed scenes surely in the present. There’s flashes of a magnolia tree, a Tom Thumb, a cross on a trailer. ‘Around Again‘ frets over the fleetingness: “Memory won’t let me take a picture / Turn to me and tell me you’ll remember.”
“It’s about resiliency and appreciating the little moments, even when the big picture can be daunting,” says Will. “I’m proud of how we let the songs and the feeling of the record do the work for us. Even in somber moments, the joy behind the music is noticeable, and that’s what makes it special to me.”

Deep Throat Choir release album title track ‘In Order to Know You’ Inbox contact@thepartae.com

RELEASE ALBUM TITLE TRACK

TAKEN FROM IN ORDER TO KNOW YOU
OUT DECEMBER 3 ON BELLA UNION

With their new album In Order to Know You due out December 3 via Bella Union, and having previously shared a video to lead track ‘Alchemilla’, Deep Throat Choir today share the LP’s beguiling title track. Of the track founder member Luisa Gerstein says: “In Order to Know You is a tender love song about the insufficiency of words sometimes. It also refers to the body of work – we make these songs in order to know each other more fully, and music as a whole is a means of understanding and communing with each other in a deeper way.”

“I’m reeling, I’m restless,” sing Deep Throat Choir from the heart of their second album. That restlessness manifests in a set of tremendously abundant, original songs from the East London vocal collective, which consists of women and non-binary members and was founded by Landshapes member Luisa Gerstein. To be released at the end of the year, In Order to Know You is a multi-layered assertion of freshly expansive range, driven by two core virtues: a sense of strength in unity and an open embrace of its singers’ personal experiences, shared through collective, supportive vocal expression.

After 2017’s largely covers-based debut album, Be OK, the choir recognised the call to evolve. “Having been singing together for five-plus years, and having released an album of mostly covers, it felt like the logical next step to make our own music together,” says Gerstein. “This album is the alchemy of all the specific voices and players that make up the choir, and a collaborative process of writing and sharing music and ideas. Sonically, I wanted to move beyond just voices and percussion, to see what richness could be brought with instruments and electronics, and to transition from a choir that does covers to a band with loads of vocalists.”

The rewards of that leap are immediately evident on first single ‘Alchemilla’, named after the herbaceous perennial. A testimony to the strength in vulnerability, it celebrates an openness to emotion across buoyant harmonies that “ebb and flow” like cool waves. With words by Heloise Tunstall-Behrens, Alice Freedman and Holly Turnbull, the song emerged from a jamming session in Margate and a conversation about masculinity.

A rolling piano buoys up ‘Lighter’, which channels Sun Ra’s influence into a song that upholds the support found in mutual connectivity. Meanwhile, the gorgeous swoon of ‘Patience’ again illuminates how individual singers’ experiences can take shape within the choir, to become something held by all. “I wrote ‘Patience’ as a kind of eulogy for my mum’s funeral,” says Rosa Slade. “Music for me was the easier way to express a combined and confusing feeling of grief and celebration of life. I joined Deep Throat a few months later and found the choir space brought such deep holding through song and collectivity. When Luisa began to compose and gather for the second album, it felt natural somehow for the song to be held by those voices too; so it could live by transforming into something new and shared; becoming multiple stories existing in unison.”

From there, In Order to Know You heads towards its climax without seeming to touch the ground, from the title track’s devotional exhalation to the stealthy, smoky shimmer of ‘Unstitching’. Its lyrics drawn from a poem by Emma Cleave, the sublime ‘Field of Not Knowing’ closes the album in a vivid tapestry of folk-gothic images and serene-to-soaring arrangements.

For Deep Throat Choir, the result is both a culmination of journeys taken so far and a lustrous springboard for further adventures. Their travels began in 2013, when the collective took shape from a desire to strip music back to the basic elements of raw voices and drums, united in a fashion that both honours and transmogrifies personal expression. A small group of four or five singers steadily expanded, with Zara Toppin’s drums providing a propulsive energy. Cathartic live shows and collaborations followed, ranging from team-ups with Peggy Sue, Stealing Sheep, Horse Meat Disco and Matthew E White to a fruitful collaboration with techno-pop duo Simian Mobile Disco on the 2018 album Murmurations followed: a testament to the choir’s alchemical abilities.

At a residency at the Prah Foundation, Margate, seeds were sown for the new songs. An increased confidence bloomed as the band pushed at its boundaries, an evolution aided by engineer Andy Ramsey and the vast range of the contributors’ musical talents. Emerging organically, the songs reflect the experiences and worlds of the singers who contributed to the writing process. Alongside soloists Tanya Auclair, Liv Stones, Holly Holden, Elly Condron, Miryam Solomon, Fikir Assefa, Maddie Rix, Rosa Slade, Heloise Tunstall-Behrens, Fran Lobo and Gerstein, new contributors included brass players Marcus Hamblett and Emma Gatrill, plus pianist Sam Beste. From within the choir, Kate Burn played cello, Sarah Anderson played violin/viola, Tunstall-Behrens played bass and Auclair contributed synth parts. Recording took place before lockdown; Gerstein produced, while Jimmy Robertson (Anna Calvi, Peggy Sue) mixed the record.

The album title reflects that drive towards a kind of questing togetherness. “We made this music in order to know and understand each other more fully,” says Gerstein, “and that’s what music is in general. We’re saying it to each other, and to the listener.”

Today, boylife announces his new debut album gelato due October 8th. PRE-ORDER / PRE-SAVE HERE.

The project’s announcement arrives with a teaser that serves as a supercut from an upcoming boylife single and video, offering the fans one more glimpse of what to expect from the project ahead of its release. gelato‘s announcement also arrives on the heels of recently released tracks ‘amphetamine‘ and ‘lush‘, the former of which was featured as Apple Music’s New Music Daily song and the latter of which arrived alongside an intimate, David Jung-directed video that features stunning moving portraits of boylife set against California’s wilderness at dusk. The album features fan favourites, ‘peas‘, ‘bummy‘ and ‘church‘ – songs that established boylife as a singular voice upon their initial release in 2020. The artist’s introductory full length effort, gelato is rooted in the consistently intimate songwriting and fearless experimentation that he’s showcased across singles to date.

About the new album, Yoo said, “‘gelato’ is a self portrait. I made it across four years without really planning to make an album. I like that gelato melts and you have to enjoy it while it still holds a shape. I tried to catch the moments at the center of each song the same way, gentle but knowing it’s only here for a little bit.” boylife‘s voice has the smoothness of a quintessential R&B crooner which he is working to push beyond the border of recognition — he took the name boylife from a Cody Chesnutt song, after all. “The voice is an instrument, and I like my instruments to be versatile and malleable,” he says.

The Buckleys new single ‘Woodstock69’ takes us on a nostalgic journey back in time

by the partae September 28, 2021
written by the partae

Having released their internationally acclaimed debut album, ‘Daydream‘, rising Australian music stars, The Buckleys, return with ‘Woodstock69’ — an ode to one of the most monumental moments in music history. It features a beautifully curated music video that was directed by the youngest band member, Molly Buckley who shot the video at Chris Murphy’s beloved Ballina property, Sugar Beach Ranch. Woodstock69 delivers one of the many highlights from their full-length album.

Listen to Woodstock69

HERE

‘Woodstock69’ perfectly captures the Byron Bay siblings’ exquisite song-writing and feel-good foundations. Written by Sarah Buckley, Phil Barton (Nashville’s Music Row Breakthrough Songwriter of the Year) and Dave Thomson (co-writer #1 hit ‘Champagne Night’ by Lady A)  and scheduled for release on Petrol Records / UMe, ‘Woodstock69’ is a nostalgic love letter to live music and the impact it has had on their lives and fellow performers.

With the band’s signature authenticity and aura of liberation, Sarah’s alluring vocal palette, paired with both the charming instrumentals and finely crafted videography results in a stunning audio-visual aesthetic that sways between snippets of the sibling trio and original footage from the famous 1969 Woodstock festival.

“Beyond Woodstock, this song is reminiscent of the times we all stood in packed crowds, singing songs, holding the hands of strangers, and dancing together. It’s a song that embodies the excitement we have for when we all get to do this again. This is our love letter to live music and the impact Live Music has had on all of our lives.” The Buckleys

Whilst Australia is currently unable to host live events, the band has not lost their creative spirit and recently launched the Soulfood Sessions – performing all their favourite cover songs from their home studio, Soulfood Studios which can be viewed through their YouTube channel. The performances are reminiscent of their virtual live tour with Live Nation last year that exposed the band to over 5 million viewers globally.

BLUE STINGRAYS RELEASE VINYL ONLY RE-ISSUE OF CLASSIC ALBUM ‘SURF-N-BURN’

by the partae September 27, 2021
written by the partae

“The holy grail of modern surf guitar albums” – Ride The Wave Magazine

“A high water mark of the late 90s surf guitar genre” – Surf Or Bust Digest

Surf-N-Burn – the bodacious 1997 debut album by the classic surf trio Blue Stingrays – has rocked, rattled and rolled since its original release on Epitone Records. Twenty-four years later and long out of print, Epitone is re-releasing the album on vinyl today.

Upon its original release, the members of Blue Stingrays were touted as iconic yet anonymous surf rock pioneers. Now, after decades of whispers and speculation, the identities of these mysterious musicians have been officially confirmed as guitarist Mike Campbell (Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers/Fleetwood Mac/The Dirty Knobs), bassist Ron Blair (Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers) and drummer Randall Marsh (Mudcrutch).

Two outtakes from the original ‘Surf-N-Burn’ recording sessions were recently unearthed and are being released digitally alongside the vinyl re-release. “Grits and Eggs” keeps a steady, low key vibe while “Dawn Patrol” will inspire you to boogie to the beach with your board.

Like those who roamed the globe and found the perfect wave, Blue Stingrays nailed the perfect sound when their first twang rang ‘round the world on their now legendary debut. To quote the original Surf-N-Burn vinyl jacket sleeve: “The most profound expression of the human condition ever communicated through art, the passion in man’s soul expressed through surf guitar and captured on record!”

alt-J Announce New Album ‘The Dream’ And Release New Track ‘U&ME’

ALT-J ANNOUNCE THEIR EAGERLY ANTICIPATED FOURTH ALBUM
THE DREAM, OUT 11 FEBRUARY 2022
THE NEW SINGLE ‘U&ME’ IS OUT TODAY, ACCOMPANIED BY THE FIRST EVER ALT-J VIDEO TO FEATURE THE FULL BAND

Mercury Prize-winning, multiple GRAMMY and BRIT Award-nominated band alt-J have announced their eagerly awaited fourth studio album The Dream, set for release on 11 February 2022.

The band’s revelatory new single ‘U&ME’ is out now. ‘U&ME’ is the first new music from alt-J since their acclaimed third album RELAXER in 2017.

Directed by band member Gus’ brother Prosper Unger-Hamilton, the video for ‘U&ME’ is the first to feature the full band. It’s an evocative video that recalls treasured memories and captures the band in full flow during long summer days. Watch the video for ‘U&ME’ here.

‘U&ME’ is arguably alt-J’s most beautiful and honest song to date, unfurling gracefully, with new elements being subtly folded into the mix until a euphoric breakdown cracks through the middle. Lead vocalist Newman moves between blissful euphoria and artful restraint, telling a love story through snapshot memories, as the song channels the band’s unparalleled experimentation into a song that is underpinned with a raw sense of joy.

The track was written during various soundchecks across the globe, when the band got back to London and heard the recordings they knew it was one of their most dynamic recordings to date. Speaking on the process, Joe Newman says, “it gathered momentum on it’s own, it was best to just get out of its way. We were just there.”

‘U&ME’ was written about a day Joe Newman spent at Sun Cycle Festival in Melbourne. Elaborating on the meaning of the song, Gus Unger-Hamilton says, “it’s about being at a festival with your best friends, having a good time, togetherness, and the feeling in life that nothing could be any better than it is right now”.

The Dream is an album where true-crime inspired stories and tales of Hollywood and the Chateau Marmont rub shoulders with some of the band’s more personal moments to-date. Both beauty and darkness lay side-by-side – often seamlessly merging on the same track, a purposeful choice that pays dividends across the record. The band’s dazzling instrumentation has matured; there are still far out moments, but now they are deployed with an artful precision.

The Dream is an album of intrigue, beauty and humanity – a coalescence of everything that has made alt-J a global band with true staying power. The album was created after a period of rest for the band following their seismic world tour in support of previous record RELAXER. It is a record that is the sound of a band growing as songwriters and storytellers.

The Dream will be available on a variety of formats across CD and vinyl, plus digital download and streaming. There is a limited-edition hardback book CD with reproductions of the notebook that Joe Newman used to write the lyrics for The Dream, with his original handwritten lyrics and drawings. There is also transparent violet vinyl, clear vinyl, 180g heavyweight black vinyl and a standard CD available.

alt-J are one of the most successful British bands of the millennium. Joe Newman, Gus Unger-Hamilton and Thom Green have released three studio albums that, between them, have sold in excess of two million copies with two and a half billion streams. Their 2012 Mercury Prize and Ivor Novello Award-winning debut An Awesome Wave was followed two years later by their GRAMMY and BRIT Award-nominated album This Is All Yours. Released in 2017, RELAXER flew straight into the top 10 of the Australian and UK album chart and became their second album to be nominated for the Mercury Prize.
