Rewind With Steve Bell returns to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Regurgitator’s debut album Tu-Plang

written by the partae

When Regurgitator appeared out of the Brisbane underground music scene in the early ‘90s they seemed like the band least likely to be snapped up by a major label. But defying the odds, they inked a deal with Warner that gave them full artistic control. Despite songs lashing music industry greed and spiked with radio unfriendly lyrics, Regurgitator landed in the charts, becoming a platinum-certified, festival-playing favourite.

In this season of Rewind, host Steve Bell sits down with the original Regurgitator line-up who recorded Tu-Plang: Quan Yeomans, Ben Ely and Martin Lee (the first time he’s spoken publicly in twenty years). They are joined by a behind-the-scenes team who helped get Tu-Plang out: DIY-inclined manager Paul Curtis, Warner’s A&R at the time of Tu-Plang Michael Parisi and album producer Lachlan “Magoo” Goold.

Together they weave a tale of how a band, who despite a central punk sensibility, defied expectations and signed with a major label. The trio then pushed against their corporate bosses with defiantly uncommercial ideas and an adventurous recording session in Thailand that included feral dogs, a biker gang, diarrhoea and a mixing desk controlled with toothpicks. Then came the hits, Alan Jones’ calling for them to be banned and the unusual twist of turning down the chance to break America.

Rewind With Steve Bell is available to stream via The Podcasts website and all your favourite streaming platforms, including Apple and Spotify.

About Regurgitator:

Emerging from Brisbane in the mid-‘90s as alternative music bludgeoned the mainstream, Regurgitator quickly established themselves as a surreal staple on both radio and the touring circuit. As well as lovingly indulging in six Big Day Out tours, Regurgitator also gave touring partners such as Red Hot Chili Peppers, Boredoms, Helmet, Pansy Division, and The Prodigy some fun for their money when it came to satiating crowds with sweaty, energetic, genre-bending rock.

About Rewind:

Rewind With Steve Bell launched in 2020 with a successful three-part oral history of Silverchair’s Frogstomp. The podcast quickly became the most played locally- produced music podcast upon release, peaking at #2 on Apple’s music podcast chart (held from the #1 spot by the blockbusting Dolly Parton’s America). Three follow-up seasons, featuring Billy Bragg, The Avalanches and Daryl Braithwaite have seen Rewind remain in Apple’s top 10, smash into Spotify’s music top 5 and trend around the globe (Great Britain, Japan, Canada, Sweden, Norway, Germany, France, Portugal, Argentina and more).

About Steve Bell:

In the 20 years since Steve Bell turned his back on a promising legal career to follow his passion of music he’s pretty much done it all, from managing bands and running a record label to owning a record store and dedicating years on-air to community radio. But since tumbling into the world of street press in mid-2000 it’s music journalism that has proved his true love, and he’s now parlayed those decades of interviewing artists for print and radio into the podcast world.

About Handshake Podcasts:

Rewind is a part of the Handshake stable that also includes one-on-one interview series The Green Room With Tiana Speter, NRL opinion series The Take With Willie Mason and pop culture show that doesn’t live up to its name, That Sucks.

QUOTES FROM THIS EPISODE OF REWIND:

Michael Parisi, former Warner A&R, about how he discovered Regurgitator accidentally on another band’s demo tape:

“It just so happened that when Ben sent me the demos for the new Pangaea stuff, it was a cassette actually, one side was a Pangaea record. The other side was these Regurgitator demos. And, I had a listen to it and I went, ‘what is this?’ And I remember ringing Ben going, ‘I love this more than Pangaea.’ So at the time I go, ‘Can I sign both?’ At the time my boss said, “Look, let’s just focus on one and if that works, then we can, you know, we can sign the other. So which one do you want to sign?’ I said, ‘I’m going to sign this Regurgitator band.’” listen to quote here

Ben Ely speaking about how the band reacted to going pop:

“I remember we had a rehearsal at Red Zeds one Friday night when we used to rehearse there, and Quan came in and he’s like, ‘I’ve written this song,’ and he said, ‘it’s a pop song.’’ We’re like, ‘What? You wrote a pop song. It’s like, ‘Dude, what are you, what are you doing?’ You know, we don’t do that. And then we played it and went, ‘Oh.’ I remember actually playing it in the rehearsal room. And I remember us all looking at each other and just kind of going… kind of freaked out. Cause we liked it. We felt guilty for liking cause we weren’t supposed to do it.” listen to quote here

Quan Yeomans on not enjoying fame:

“To be so successful so quickly and to do it in such a random seemingly random way to me, and to just have so much fun doing it as well as being incredible. So I do feel really, really lucky. But the industry thing, I mean, I never went, I tried to avoid all of the ARIA Awards. I remember, the year that we won five or six of them, I was just in bed, in a hotel room with my girlfriend watching it on TV. I mean, we just, I don’t think I watched at all. Um, it really wasn’t that important to me and that.” listen to quote here

ANTOINE SHARES LATEST R&B GROOVE ‘NO LUV REQUIRED’

written by the partae

Today, Naarm/Melbourne based artist Antoine shares his latest single ‘No Luv Required’, which marks the next phase of an already promising young career. Setting himself aside from his peers, Antoine’s love affair with early 2000s R&B comes through loud and clear on ‘No Luv Required’, transporting the listener to a time when artists like Ashanti & Usher reigned supreme. Following on from a slew of strong releases in 2020, Antoine has enlisted the help of producer ServidSounds for ‘No Luv Required’ which lifts the track from great to special, pushing their sound into the upper echelon of Australia’s burgeoning R&B scene.

Speaking on the release, Antoine explains; “‘No Luv Required’ is an upbeat vibrant take on a young love story before it all goes wrong. It’s about living in the moment and enjoying it with that special someone. You start to feel invincible as a team without any serious commitments which can be so rewarding. Just purely enjoying each other’s company in the present”.

Antoine also speaks on his sound; “R&B & HipHop is changing and I feel like I’m striking a balance between both old and new takes on the genre, allowing me to create something that’s different from what’s come before and what will come in the future”.

‘No Luv Required‘ is the beginning of a new era for the young Melbourne artist, loaded with more releases to come in 2021, along with a music video and collaboration with one of Australia’s leading R&B artists Timomatic. It’s time to get familiar with the name Antoine, as he’s about to level up and showcase his distinctive flavour & sound, which is set to make waves in the local and international R&B scene.

LISTEN TO ANTOINE – ‘NO LUV REQUIRED’

Praise for Antoine

– Music Group

“A masterclass in narration”
– Clash Magazine (UK)

“Poetic and Powerful”
– Declan Byrne | Triple J

“Antoine positions himself as one to watch”
– Pilerats

Hailing from Naarm/Melbourne, Australia, Antoine sets out to take us back to the 2000’s with his smooth, melodic voice along with hard-hitting production suitable for todays audience. Drawing heavy inspiration from his musically gifted family, Antoine seeks to redefine and reshape the R&B world with his infectious and catchy melodies. 2020-2021 has been a busy and productive time for Antoine, seeing him release a slew of accomplished and punchy singles such as ‘One Time’ & ‘New Bae Sh*t’ amassing tens of thousands of streams. Also putting a feature down on renowned Australian artist Blush’ko’s debut album ‘Afternoon Delight’, expect to see a lot more of Antoine in the near future.

Wesley Joseph & MICHELLE drop singles from Two Inch Punch’s A Month Of Sunday’s compilation

A MONTH OF SUNDAYS
SHARES NEW AA-SIDE SINGLE FROM BREAKTHROUGH ARTISTS
WESLEY JOSEPH AND MICHELLE
OUT NOW ON TRANSGRESSIVE RECORDS.
TAKEN FROM THE UPCOMING FULL LENGTH PROJECT
OUT SEPTEMBER 3RD FEATURING
JESSIE WARE, JAMES VINCENT MCMORROW, THE JOY
AND MORE.

During the first few weeks of the Covid-19 lockdown, London-based producer Two Inch Punch had the idea of a collaborative project in which the artist and producer community, given their sudden slow down of pace, could have the opportunity to continue working, collaborating and making connections with fellow producers and musicians that they may already know but also hopefully connecting with those that they didn’t, and that they may have admired from afar.
Two Inch Punch has now curated a new project titled A Month Of Sundays and in the spirit of the collaborative nature of the project will be releasing a series of AA-side singles over the coming months, with the full album A Month Of Sundays: Volume 1 set for release Friday 3rd September on Transgressive Records. Further details, including a full list of the collaborators plus the tracklisting, will be revealed soon.

Proceeds from A Month Of Sundays: Volume 1 will be going to the independent charities Young Minds and Black Minds Matter. It’s vitally important that we support each other at this time, and hope that this project is able to provide a small offering of relief.

Following on from the critically acclaimed debut release, that featured brand new songs from Jessie Ware & James Vincent McMorrow and The Joy, A Month Of Sundays shares it’s second AA-side drop with singles from fast-rising new artists Wesley Joseph ‘Can’t Sleep’ and MICHELLE ‘Brasil’ who have collectively picked up acclaim from the likes of Pitchfork, The Fader, Dazed, Pigeons & Planes, NME, i-D, The Face and more.

Discussing working with Wesley and MICHELLE, Two Inch Punch offered the following.

“Wesley is one of my fav uk artists right now hands down. What I like about him is he’s entirely in his own lane and not concerned about being from a scene. That’s what makes him so magnetic, not trying to fit in anywhere, unapologetically himself and makes you want to get into his world – which he does so beautifully on this record.
MICHELLE are incredible. I became obsessed with their track “The Bottom”. I love their setup, they remind me a lot of old throwback psychedelic groups and 70s soul led bands, but with synths.

When we started making the embryonic music for this song, it came from a very soulful, funk inspired place. I made the beat with Flan Egg & Mack Jamieson, who are two of the most soulful producers around right now. I always look out for the records they have worked on. The astonishing bass on this was played so majestically by Gabe Noel, who is at the heart of so many amazing records over the years from Kendrick Lamar to Ethan Gruska, to Brent Faiyaz. When we had this piece it felt perfect for MICHELLE and I’m so glad they added their spin on it, absolutely owned the beat & made it their own! It’s one of the most important songs on this record. We are so proud of this one.

Both these two songs came together fairly quickly which is always the sign of a great record in my eyes. All the parts seemed to slot together, and they were both definitely the flagship songs that shaped the rest of the album and tone. We’re so glad they are coming out together, to truly paint the picture of the record.”
A Month Of Sundays: Volume 1 is available to pre-order on limited edition vinyl and CD, alongside donations to Young Minds and Black Minds Matter, here.

SUPPORT FOR WILDER.

“A pop-punk take on blistering post-hardcore.”
FLOOD Magazine (USA)

“…a lively new duo…”
The Noise (USA)

“A refreshing blast of pop-punk…”
BTR Today (USA)

Southern California indie-rock duo Wilder. have announced their debut EP, ‘BAD BAD LUCK’, due out August 27 on Rude Records. ‘BAD BAD LUCK’ is a high-energy and introspective collection of indie-punk songs reflecting largely on the band members’ experience as young adults in the church and their journey making a fresh start.

“After such a long time in anticipation, we are thrilled to finally release this EP,” shares the band. “It’s an accurate reflection of who we are today, and an ode to our journey up until now. From establishing our presence as artists over the past 10 years, to the pains of letting our old band go, as well as outgrowing certain relationships and leaving organised religion; This EP tells the story of it all. The page has finally turned, and it’s time to get wild!”

The EP features the singles ‘Oh No’, ‘See Through’ and ‘bitemytongue’, as well as the latest single and title track, ‘Bad Bad Luck’. Watch the official music video here: HERE. The ‘BAD BAD LUCK’ EP is available for pre-order here: https://music.ruderecords.com/badbadluckep.

Wilder. is the new project of Long Beach, CA musicians Stephen Ramos and Nick Sturz. Over the past decade, the two musicians have cut their teeth on the road and in the studio, performing dozens of tours across the states, recording albums and paying their dues. Having learned valuable lessons by means of failure, success and perseverance, the duo have formed Wilder., what they feel to be the most accurate representation of who they are as artists.

Their music as Wilder. is upbeat, infectiously melodic, and resemblant of the Southern California aesthetic from which it was created. Their aim is simple, and is even written onto Ramos’ Fender Telecaster – the band is now here, and things are about to get wild. But behind their vibrant imagery, their songs have underlying lyrical content full of honesty and angst, with a tongue-in-cheek attitude that leaves the listener wanting to know more of the story.

Previous singles have been widley embraced by the likes of SYN FM, Edge Radio, 4ZZZ, Kerrang! Radio (UK), Apple Music, Amazon Music, AAA Backstage, Something You Said, FLOOD Magazine (USA), Distorted Magazine (UK) and Bring The Noise (UK).

Vantage– ‘I Found You’ (feat. Benjamin Ingrosso)
Out Now

Following on from the viral success of his 2020 track ‘50/50’ and his very recent release ‘I Think I’m In Love’ feat Todd Edwards, Vantage returns with his second release of 2021  ‘I Found You’, out today on FFRR.

Vantage is the fast-rising French born and Osaka based producer who is a leading figure in the ‘Future Funk’ genre, an electronic music subgenre that takes inspiration from 80s funk and disco and 00’s dance. Here Vantage delivers a whole new contemporary spin and feel, blending the French Touch sound with Vapourwave and House.

With new release ‘I Found You’ he builds in his now signature filtered disco sound, taking it to the next level, bringing us blissfully summer infused track. Using a range of analogue synths and instruments to create his distinctive tone and with a vibe and feel of something straight out of the 80s. Think funky bass guitar, vocoder vocals, bright filtered loops and retro synths stabs throughout.

The vocalist is emerging Swedish singer Benjamin Ingrosso, nominated by MTV in 2018 as Best Swedish Act and is the cousin of famed Swedish House Mafioso Sebastian Ingrosso.

Emerging onto the scene in 2015, Vantage has since cultivated an immersive world at the intersection of sound and technology. Involved in digital Pop Art  and consistently dropping new NFT artworks , he has a  belief that music and imagery combined should do the talking.  Vantage has created an engaging visual world to coincide with his music on 2015 album ‘Metro City’ then continuing his distinctive second album ‘J-Funk City’ in 2019. More recently he saw his re-released single, ‘50/50’ becoming a viral hit via TikTok as well as remixing Dua Lipa in the process finding an audience on a global scale.

Having already achieved great success to date, with his previous tracks streaming in the 100’s of thousands a day and having been propelled to the top of the Viral charts. We know there is much more to come from this exciting artist.
