Praise for As Long As You Are

“Melding melodic punch with brooding gloom, Future Islands’ role as new wave torch bearers is assured on a sixth album gilded with emotional and sonic depth, symptomatic of their rising status as seasoned songsmiths.” – The Line Of Best Fit, 9/10

Album Of The Week – AU Review, ★★★★

“Intensely moving.” – The Observer, ★★★★

“A work of incredible density, and yet, it feels so light. A remarkable dichotomy.” – Scenestr

“Mellow, magnetic album is among their best work.” – Evening Standard (Album of the Week, ★★★★)

“A marvellously-produced album that jumps out of the speakers, brimming with confidence and dripping with arena-sized existential anthems.” – Loud And Quiet, 8/10

“Sumptuous.” – Uncut, 8/10

“Existential bangers from Baltimore’s most eccentric band.” – NME, ★★★★

“This album feels like the next step in their story, with more deeply felt New Romantic intensity than ever.” – Rolling Stone

Today, Future Islands release ‘For Sure (Dan Deacon Remix)’, an expansive 9-minute remix from the fellow Baltimorean artist where he incorporates stirring strings, piano and an electronic crescendo to the original track.

Dan Deacon says, “Like most people, the last year has made me realise how important my friends are to me, and how much I miss being with them. When the guys released ‘For Sure’, it really brought me back to memories of when we lived together and I could hear them practicing in the basement. I kept listening to it over and over and wanted to hear it “more,” if that makes sense. I wanted to hear the individual parts, and I wanted to hang out with them and interact with them. When I got the stems I didn’t really have a plan for the remix other than I wanted to hear Sam’s voice with piano and strings, and it just started growing from there in an organic way. It was a comforting project that brought me close to people I love and missed very much. One of my favourite things about being a musician are the friendships and bonds that are made through it. It’s hard to imagine my life, let alone my music, without having met these bozos.”

Last night, Future Islands brought their renowned incendiary live performance to the screen when they performed their latest single ‘Plastic Beach’ on Late Night With Seth Meyers. Watch it HERE. In 2020, the band performed lead single ‘For Sure’ on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert and Ellen.

As Long As You Are, Future Islands sixth studio album, looks to the past as well as the future, confronting old ghosts and embracing a new hope. It is an album about trust, full of honesty, redemption and “letting go”, allowing old wounds to heal and bringing painful chapters to a close. The album features singles ‘Born In A War’, ‘Moonlight’, ‘Thrill’ and ‘For Sure’. Signalling a new era for Future Islands, touring drummer Mike Lowry officially joins as a fully-fledged member and songwriter bolstering the founding trio of William Cashion, Samuel T. Herring and Gerrit Welmers. Together, the four-piece took on official production duties for the first time, co-producing As Long As You Are with engineer Steve Wright at his Wrightway Studios in Baltimore. Given time to allow the songs to slowly come to life, these 11 new songs of post wave synth-pop are as euphoric and uninhibitedly joyful as anything the band has done in their 14-year career.

As Long As You Are is now available digitally, on CD, standard black vinyl, petrol blue vinyl (4AD and indie stores only), fluorescent orange vinyl (band store only) and cassette (4AD Store, band store and US indies only). To listen and order, head to futureislands.ffm.to/aslongasyouare.

Following the recent release of his new album Sensationalized, Sydney-based artist Wade Jackson shares the accompanying video to his lead single 'Nightlife'. The visuals come ahead of Jackson's album launch at Sydney's Moshpit this Thursday 14 January, with special guests and Broke Stone Records' label mates Lewis Goldmark & Magnetic Heads. The album launch will also be live streamed on Thursday 14 January at 8PM AEDT via Zenn. Live stream passes are on sale now here. Jackson began predominantly worked in music theatre and writing screen plays. Given things weren’t going so well he decided to use his musical chops to write his debut album Goodbye Rain, Hello Sunshine in 2012 which he later recorded with producer Liam Judson (Belles Will Ring, Cloud Control to Major Tom, Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever Dream). Touring Australia widely, he took a break to write Whiskey Alpha Delta Echo in the fall of 2013, again co-producing with Judson. The album was picked up on a licensing deal from a Spanish label generating a European tour. After returning from Europe, with wind in his sails and sales he started work on the follow-up, Crown & Cathedral which unfortunately was disliked immensely by his Spanish fan base citing “there’s too much synthesiser”, a mistake that Jackson did not learn from and continued to use on the follow up album, The Ghost Searches Beside Me. The LP was recorded and mixed by Jackson with his new set of skills he was forced to learn after going broke from investing all of his money into a music documentary he made with friend and well known Australian band manager and industry stalwart, Greg Carey. Waiting - The Van Duren Story was screened around the world and well received. Now, Broken Stone Records are thrilled to have released Jackson's fifth album titled Sensationalized.  As Jackson details of the album "Sensationalized was written and recorded during the Covid-19 lockdown in Sydney. The theme is based around a fictional complete city breakdown, exaggerated reality. An almost apocalyptic, dystopian city with different scenarios played out by different characters in a diary/self reflection style. This was also reflected in the music I was listening to: Joe Walsh - Barnstorm, Joni Mitchell - Hejira, Lewis Baloue - L’amour, Peter Koppes - Manchild or Myth. All these records for me have a real reclusive feel and felt comforting whilst alone during lockdown." Lewis Goldmark is the new project from Belles Will Ring frontman, Liam Judson. This time we have chilly guitars, glowing synths, along with Judsons' unique melodicism all coming together to form dystopian lullabies. Magnetic Heads is the multi-member project of JD Miller. Once upon a time a collection of jangling 12 string pop ballads, now songs about game theory and coming of age, the loss of youth and the power of community delivered with a straight face and a brutalist cold wave aesthetic. SLEAFORD MODS Share new single & video ‘Nudge It (ft. Amy Taylor from Amyl and the Sniffers)’ Announce ‘SMtv’ Spare Ribs Special TV show New album Spare Ribs out this Friday!

Praise for Sleaford Mods

“Catchy melodies juxtaposed with crass and expletive-laden lyrics… It’s a tireless takedown of privileged politicians living in luxury as the country falls further into poverty, and sums up what Sleaford Mods do.” – Loud & Quiet

“An urgent, precise takedown of Britain’s ugly sub-conscious… their sharpness and humour are as strong as ever.” – CLASH

“…his richly detailed, brutally succinct lyrics are like weapons of mass verbal destruction.” – Sunday Times Culture

“Nudge It is grubby, dangerous, and perfectly pissed off” – Guardian Guide

Following their latest singles ‘Shortcummings’ and ‘Mork n Mindy ft. Billy Nomates’, today Nottingham-based duo Sleaford Mods release new single & video ‘Nudge It (ft Amy Taylor from Amyl and the Sniffers)’. The single comes ahead of the release of their highly-anticipated sixth studio album Spare Ribs out this Friday 15 January via Rough Trade / Remote Control Records.

Of the new single, the band’s Jason Williamson says “Imagine you’ve got limited options, unsure how you’re getting by that week, looking out the window of the damp flat you don’t want to live in, and seeing a bunch of posers having a photo shoot because ‘cool architecture bro, we feel your pain’.

Reduced circumstance isn’t a pantomime. If you haven’t lived within its confines don’t use it to enamour your ideas. It confuses the platform for those that truly live it and more often than not buries creative breakthroughs because the arena is polluted by the view of their world through someone else’s privileged lens. So beware the eager networkers, don’t settle for the 20p pay-out, nudge it, pop the posers. And don’t apologise for the fucker either.”

‘Nudge It’ partners Williamson’s trademark lyrical wit with the energetic and unmistakeable vocals of Amy Taylor from Australian punk-rock band Amyl and the Sniffers. The polemical Williamson and dexterous producer Andrew Fearn kick against the pricks with unrivalled bite, railing against hypocrisy, inequality and apathy with their inimitable, scabrous sense of humour.  New album Spare Ribs finds the duo charged with ire at the UK Government’s sense of entitlement, epitomised by its devil-may-care approach to the coronavirus crisis.

Sleaford Mods have created a one-hour ‘SMtv’ Spare Ribs Special TV show. The programme features interviews with the band and album collaborators Billy Nomates and Amy Taylor, alongside live footage from their unforgettable 100 Club livestream plus cameos from special guests including John Thomson, Robbie Williams, Iggy Pop and more. ‘SMtv’ will be broadcast at 7AM AEDT on Sunday 17th January on the band’s YouTube channel.

A natural extension of Thabo’s creative vision, the label comes four years after the start of the Home Again event series – a concept embodying his ‘ideal’ house party. With previous bookings including Borrowed Identity, Sweely, Sally C, Meggy, Eli Escobar and Adryiano, all of whom played alongside Thabo at venues Watergate, Prince Charles and IPSE, the Home Again events quickly became a meeting point for Berlin’s house heads and music enthusiasts. Despite the Covid-19 pandemic putting the party on hold, it has allowed Thabo to pause and re-examine the event’s primary sound, further developing the concept to kick off a record label. Designed as a collective of like-minded artists, the label’s roster includes Home Again party regulars Thalo Santana, Sandilé, Meggy and Szafran, alongside the label boss himself. In addition, Home Again will be dedicated to club-ready music, ranging from house to breakbeat and beyond, with a focus on exploring the sounds of Berlin’s burgeoning house scene. “I started Home Again as my version of the perfect house party. The idea to start a label existed for quite some time, but actually this challenging pandemic gave us the time to sit down and start what has been in our heads for so long” --THABO Channeling original Berlin house scene vibes, Home Again’s inaugural release is a dynamic take on sunny house, reminiscent of the carefree pre-pandemic dance marathons. DMA’S ANNOUNCE LIVE AT BRIXTON ALBUM FOR FRIDAY 5 MARCH + RECORD WILL BE RELEASED DIGITALLY & ON LIMITED EDITION DOUBLE VINYL + FIRST TRACK ‘LAY DOWN (LIVE AT BRIXTON)’ OUT NOW

by the partae January 12, 2021
written by the partae

I OH YOU are psyched to share ‘Lay Down (Live at Brixton)’ today, along with announcing DMA’S forthcoming Live at Brixton album. Following huge fan demand, the live album will be officially released on Friday 5 March, the one-year anniversary of their headline show at London’s O2 Academy Brixton which saw the band play to a sold-out crowd of 5,000.

Along with being released digitally, the album will come as a very limited vinyl pressing, a double ‘Smoked-Pink’ LP set in a gatefold full of images from their now infamous London show. Inspired by a flare that was set off during the show, the ‘Smoked-Pink’ vinyl is one for the avid collectors amongst us and expected to sell fast.

March 6th, 2020. A sold-out audience fills the O2 Academy Brixton’s cavernous space from wall-to-wall. The lights go down, the crowd erupts into a chant and DMA’S tear into their opening song ‘Feels Like 37’ accompanied by 5000 voices passionately singing along. The band are playing the biggest headline show of their career to date half a planet away from home, yet have conjured the atmosphere of an intimate homecoming celebration.

What follows is a show that will live long in the memories of the band and their fans alike. From early favourites ‘In The Air’ and ‘Lay Down’ to new material such as ‘Silver’ and ‘Life Is A Game Of Changing’ from their hugely successful 5 x ARIA nominated album THE GLOW (#2 in Australia and #4 in the UK), the band, in full live mode, inspire a rapturous reception.

Today’s release of ‘Lay Down (Live at Brixton)’ (a fan favourite from the band’s debut album Hills End), along with the exhilarating live footage from the notorious evening, provides a sneak peak of what to expect, with a powerful, high energy performance boosted by a sizzling atmosphere and a blissful reminder of the power and wonder of a sold-out live show.

THE GLOW saw praise from the likes of The Sun (UK), Dork, Q Magazine (4 stars), Clash (8/10), NME AU, Rolling Stone AU and Consequence of Sound, plus appearances across national TV shows and daily newspapers. The album transcends genre pigeon-holing, with singles being added across Triple M, HIT Network, triple j, BBC Radio and Radio X.

Over 31 nights local artists, musicians and dancers will perform throughout the Gallery responding to artworks in the NGV Triennial exhibition. Meanwhile in NGV’s Grollo Equiset Garden the Triennial Summer Stage will feature nightly guest DJ sets, presented in partnership with Melbourne Music Week. Award-winning Melbourne chef Adam D’Sylva will transform the NGV’s Garden Restaurant and new outdoor dining space into a pop-up restaurant exclusively for Triennial EXTRA. Tony Ellwood AM, Director, NGV, said “Triennial EXTRA will champion the best of Melbourne’s art, music and dining during a time when Melburnians are looking to reconnect with our city’s creative talents. Newly commissioned works by local performers responding to the NGV Triennial will present the exhibition in a new light throughout the late-night season.” Highlights from the Triennial EXTRA program include: AS SHE FLOATS BY SCOTTY SO – Tue-Sun, 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm - Exhibiting NGV Triennial artist Scotty So appears across the Ground Level of NGV International silently lip syncing a Chinese Opera inspired by the myth of the Chinese moon goddess Chang'e. SCARLETT NIGHT BY SCOTTY SO –Tue-Sun, 8:30 pm - 9:00 pm - Scarlett So Hung So, artist Scotty So’s drag persona, takes visitors on a journey through time in Adam Nathaniel Furman and Sibling Architecture’s NGV Triennial installation Boudoir Babylon 2020, paying homage to Japanese actress and singer Yoshiko Yamaguchi, 60s songstress Rebecca Pan, Greek diva Maria Callas and Australia’s queen of pop Kylie Minogue. OPENING WEEKEND DJS – 15, 16 & 17 Jan, 6.00 pm – 9.00 pm - Setting the scene on the Forecourt and in the Garden, local DJs performing during EXTRA’s opening weekend include emerging talent Millú; local nightlife mainstay Andee Frost; disco, funk and electronic specialist Edd Fisher; and multifaceted classical house DJ and curator Merve. LUCENT BY NAREE VACHANANDA – Mon, Wed & Fri, 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm - Naree Vachananda explores the classic Japanese Noh theatre in a choreographed performance titled Lucent. The presentation draws upon connections between Noh theatre and Cerith Wyn Evans’s NGV Triennial light work C=O=D=A 2020 with dancers creating an arc of movement with their bodies to interpret the complex forms of Wyn Evans’ white neon sculpture. SPOTLIGHT ON SHADOWS BY SHINJITA ROY – Mon, Wed & Fri, 7:00 pm - 7:30 pm & 8:00 pm - 8:30 pm - Choreographed by Shinjita Roy, Spotlight on Shadows combines Kathak, one of the eight major forms of Indian classical dance, and the Salon et lumière 2020 installation, a digital recreation of the NGV’s British and European 19th century art Salon Hang. WIDOWSPEAK Announce new EP Honeychurch Share Dire Straits’ cover ‘Romeo and Juliet’

by the partae January 11, 2021
written by the partae
2SER Feature Album“Widowspeak fuses lightness and darkness like few others.” – NPR

“Romances, lives, cities, worlds — Widowspeak’s songs contemplate their erosion with a dazed acceptance and music that keeps opening up new spaces.” – New York Times

“Every Widowspeak record is exceptionally intimate.” – AV Club

“Widowspeak take bits and pieces of rock, folk, and country history to make a pop Americana sound that feels antique.” – Pitchfork

“Optimistic-feeling swirl of twangy, textured guitars and dreamy-as-hell vocals” – The FADER

“Rich and atmospheric…speaking to the restlessness of human existence”  – KEXP

“Widowspeak take the best parts of folk and shoegaze and twist them together” – Stereogum

Fresh off the release of their critically-acclaimed fifth album Plum, Widowspeak welcome the new year with Honeychurch, a brand new digital EP out Friday 22 January. Along with the announcement, the duo share a rich, expansive version of Dire Straits’ ‘Romeo and Juliet.’ It’s no secret that Widowspeak’s covers are unmatched. With Molly Hamilton’s serenely sweet vocals and Robert Earl Thomas’ atmospheric guitar they’ve transformed Neil Young’s ‘Harvest Moon,‘ Third Eye Blind’s ‘How’s It Going Be,‘ Chris Isaak’s ‘Wicked Game‘ and now ‘Romeo and Juliet’ into signature Widowspeak ballads. Listen to ‘Romeo and Juliet’ here.

Widowspeak on ‘Romeo and Juliet’ – “It’s one of our mutual favorites, from the very first notes it just takes you to that place.  There are also so many different associations wrapped up in the song for me: remembering the first times hearing it, putting it on mix cds, the teen movie soundtracks, even the Indigo Girls cover. And we’re obsessed with the music video.  Sometimes you just want to sing something that feels like a friend, ya know? We recorded the cover in an afternoon, and don’t have much of a soundproofed situation, so you can kind of hear the sounds of the neighborhood in the background”

Like the 17th-century tile on its cover, Honeychurch is a repurposed artifact. Its title, a nod to E.M. Forster’s A Room With A View, was originally a working title for Plum – an album noted and praised by Pitchfork for its “glowing synths and lyrics about labor and death” and Stereogum for the “gentle, beautiful and light as air sounds despite the weight of emotion it carries” – it felt in line with the album’s thematic considerations of class, relationships, and generational ties, but was ultimately set aside. Recorded at their apartment in Brooklyn and mixed and mastered by Jamie Harley (The Jesus and Mary Chain, Mogwai), Widowspeak’s new collection delivers homespun intimations with polished precision. The questions posed on Plum still reverberate, and Honeychurch leaves space for us to hear them better.

Plum’s reflections on work and worth grew more pertinent by the day, singer Molly Hamilton and guitarist Robert Earl Thomas felt there was more to explore. They began with what was already there, toying around with a new take on Plum single ‘Money.’ The resulting track is a pared-down, introspective version, with a foreboding synth tone that asks us to spend more time with its prompt: “will you get back what you put in?” Hamilton and Thomas also recorded a playful, Nancy Sinatra-esque take on R.E.M.’s ‘The One I Love.’ Revisiting a discarded Plum demo about blood ties gave rise to the slow-burning ‘Sanguine,’ while EP closer ‘Honeychurch’ is an ambient epilogue that leaves space for deeper reflection.

Acclaimed producer and DJ Oliver Heldens joins the Anjunafamily Listen to Oliver Heldens’ new remix of Above & Beyond’s ’Thing Called Love’ (feat. Richard Bedford) Lifted from Above & Beyond’s beloved 2011 studio album ‘Group Therapy’ Available now on Anjunabeats

With several No. 1 hits and over two billion streams to his name, Oliver Heldens is a true superstar of our scene. Considered the founding father of ‘future house’, his breakout hit ‘Gecko’ featuring Becky Hill lit up the UK Top 40 charts in 2013 laning at #1 propelling Oliver to festival mainstages across the globe and earned him a prestigious residency slot on BBC Radio 1.

Oliver’s list of collaborators is a ‘who’s who’ of dance – Tiesto, Nile Rodgers, Riton, Sander Van Doorn – and he’s been tapped to remix superstars like Calvin Harris, Coldplay, Katy Perry, Justin Timberlake, Disclosure and The Chainsmokers. Oliver also runs his own label Heldeep Records, alongside the newly launched OH2 imprint, which has seen the likes of Alok, Chocolate Puma, Dada Life and Example consistently release their music on the label.

“I’ve always really admired the guys and what they’ve accomplished with Anjuna and Group Therapy, so it was a great honor and pleasure to remix their iconic ‘Thing Called Love’ song, featuring Richard Bedford’s beautiful vocals, for the songs 10 year anniversary”, says Oliver Heldens. It might sound a bit different than what people would expect from me, but I wanted to keep the trancey vibe of the original alive in this epic new remix. I can’t wait to play this out at festivals when they are safe to can happen again! Hope you like it too :)”

One of several new remixes of classic Above & Beyond tracks to emerge as part of the 20 Years of Anjunabeats celebrations, Oliver Heldens’ remix of ’Thing Called Love’ was debuted by the band during their Group Therapy 400 livestream last September. 2021 is the anniversary of Group Therapy, Above & Beyond’s iconic album that also gave the world ‘Sun & Moon’, ‘Alchemy’, and ‘You Got To Go’.

The Oliver Heldens remix of Above & Beyond’s ’Thing Called Love’ (feat. Richard Bedford) is out now on Anjunabeats.

The Subs join forces with Studio Brussels and Live Nation to plan one of the biggest post-covid parties in Belgium
I Want To Dance Again, a new year’s resolution you can finally keep! Let’s dance together again in 2021. When? As soon as the current COVID-19 restrictions are lifted, we will schedule a date for the first post-COVID indoor rave without restrictions. A relief and reward for our massive efforts, after many months of dance deprivation. Together with The Subs, we will dance and party all night long at the Lotto Arena in Antwerp. The date is yet to be determined. The sooner, the better. Are you ready for a wild night out?

Tickets are on sale now from www.livenation.be. Find out more at www.iwanttodanceagain.be.

For now, take care, stay safe, follow public health guidelines.

Keep the faith. Everything’s going to be alright!

Where are you currently based? Lethbridge, Alberta.  Canada. How did you first start playing music? I've actually grown up playing music.  My folks are musicians and helped start my home town music festival in the 80's, my sister and I like to joke that it's their oldest (and favorite) child.  I started with playing mandolin when I was nine, then I moved on to guitar at 13 like we all do.  I couldn't ever feel satisfied with playing one thing though, I always wanted to play them all.  I had lots of great role models around that played lots of things so I didn't have to look too far for help or inspiration.  It was really just a "put one foot in front of the other" sort of situation.   What's been happening recently and how has your Covid experience been so far? I've been really lucky through all this Covid business.  So far all my immediate people are healthy and carrying on as best they can.  I'm actually particularly lucky to be able to put a record out during this mess.  When all this began I didn't think I'd be in a position to put a record out, but Tonic and everyone working on the release have done an amazing job. It's lent a degree of normalcy to this otherwise abnormal time.  I'm super lucky to get to spend more time at home too.  I haven't spent this much uninterrupted time at home with my wife and cats in years, so that's definitely been a source of joy for me.   It was hard when everything shut down though.  I was on the road in the USA and made it across the border just as it closed, which was harrowing.  We were making a record in Vancouver just as things were getting serious in Canada and by the time I returned home the country was in its first lockdown.  I went through a bit of a spiral after that with my mental health and was diagnosed with clinical depression after a time.  I have a really great support system with my wife and family though and they helped me get back on the up and up and I'm doing well now.   I think I'm not very good with change at the best of times, so I kind of had a system overload.  My wife is an elementary school teacher and she's so incredibly strong.  Whenever I feel like I'm having a hard day being an artist in lockdown, I talk to her about her day and put it all in perspective.  Teachers and nurses man, they're the serious heroes in this thing.   Your new single and video for 'Where Are My Blue Eyes' is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting? I really love old-timey bluegrass and have really been immersing myself in the lore and tradition.  I was on tour in California last year with Leeroy Stagger and the Rebeltone Sound and found this old banjo from the 1890's in a music store in San Rafael.  It was tuned in double C tuning, which I'd never played but immediately recognised as the modal signature of all my favorite old recordings.  I got back to the van and tuned my banjo to double C and 'Blue Eyes' was the first thing that came out of my fingers.   How did you go about writing the single? The banjo part came first.  After I'd figured out a few moves in my new tuning the form developed quite rapidly.  Lyrically it came as a revelation as well.  We'd been on tour for the better part of the year and I was starting to feel pretty homesick.  I'd also been thinking a great deal about the atomic bomb and the new atomic age we've been living in since Aug 6, 1945 and how quickly the world can change.  I wrote the first line "where is my blue eyed girl, where on earth is she?" and the rest just poured out of me.  I think the whole thing took about ten minutes.  That's how it is though.  Sometimes you have to work for it, and sometimes it walks right up to you. Where and when did you record/produce and who with? The record was recorded over about 18 months in 2018/2019 at the Rebeltone Ranch in Lethbridge, AB.  The other band I play in (Leeroy Stagger and the Rebeltone Sound) was touring all the time, and I was finishing my undergraduate degree at the University of Lethbridge, so I chipped away at the record as I could.  I'm a recording engineer and engineered most of it.  Leeroy produced and did the lion's share of mixing.   The band were all my fellow Rebeltone Sound alumni.   How did you approach the recording process? I wanted to do something that really fit the aesthetic of the songs.  I write in kind of an anachronistic way and always want my songs to sound like they've come from 80 years earlier or something.  I've always loved analog gear too, so with those things in mind we decided to approach making the record as old school and analog as we could.  The console we used was a Trident 88 which was really neat.  We recorded almost everything live off the floor and tried to keep things to one or two takes.  Not everything on this record is perfect, but that's totally where the beauty is for me.  It feels authentic, if I do say so myself... How did the concept for the video come about? I was talking to my videographer friend Evan Uschenko, who shares my love for antiquated artistic methods and we got talking about how fun it would be to do something using 16mm.  We had the idea to shoot a video on film and to hand paint the frames to create a multimedia piece of art.   Where and when did you film and how was the experience? The process was hard but great.  It was fun to struggle with film again, Evan loading the camera blind with his hands in a canvas bag so as to not expose the film, not being able to see what you've just shot, all the trials that the modern age has corrected were present and I think the final project was better as a result.  The painting is what really took time.  To paint 17 minutes of footage was approximately 24,000 frames and took 40 hours.  When it was done I was glad it was over, but immediately was looking forward to the next time.   You have a new album coming out on the 15th of Jan, please tell us a little about what we can expect: I'm so proud of this record.  It's a collection of twelve songs spanning old-timey bluegrass and Canadiana folk that focus on where we are, how and why we got here and where we might be going in the end.  I really challenged myself on this record and I think that shows.  I tried to make music that I liked personally, and that I hoped people would like to listen to, but most of all I tried to write songs about real, important things.  I'm a big fan of the Clash and always idolized how their work had an important message, mostly about trying to be a better human being.  That's what this record is to me, and I think that comes across.   What did you find most challenging and rewarding during the creation of the album? Getting out of my own head.  Being an artist is a funny thing because we tie our personal self worth so tightly to our professional success.  I had to practice getting out of my own way a lot on this record.  I tried to be very vulnerable on this album too, and that opened me up to a level of risk that I'm not used to.  It's a good risky feeling though, I don't think there's any going back to the way it was before.   Who are you listening to at the moment? My top five records right now are Noam Pikelny -  Universal Favorite, Miles Davis - Miles Smiles, Chris Thile/Michael Daves - Sleep With One Eye Open, John K. Sampson - Winter Wheat, and the soundtrack to the movie Empire Records.   I've been listening to a lot of other things too.  Gillian Welch put out a really cool record last year that is so hauntingly good.  I've been listening to Tony Rice a lot too, he did so much for guitar players everywhere and it was a real tragedy when he passed.  I'm also working through Bach's cello sonatas on my banjo, so I've been listening to a lot of Yoyo Ma as a reference for those.   What do you like to do away from music? I'm a private pilot so flying is a big thing for me.  I have such a love for aviation.  I'm a long distance runner, which is great because I can run at home or on tour or wherever.  I like to ski and play chess.  When I'm home I love to cook.  I paint, mostly acrylic and watercolour portraits of historical figures (with varying degrees of success).  I also love to read.  I'm big on classic literature, Hemingway, Vonnegut, Thompson, Camus, Pasternak, etc.  I also do digital audio research on analog and digital mixing practice and perception through the University of Lethbridge, which I'm not sure counts as something I like to do AWAY from music, but is definitely a thing I've been doing.   What's planned for 2021? You know what, it's hard to say!  The record comes out on Jan 15th and I have a few things coming down the pipe as far as touring and performance, but it really is too early to tell what is and isn't going to be possible.  All I definitely have planned for 2021 is to do my best to make it as safe and responsible as is in my power.  I'm itching to get out and play, but only when it's safe and responsible to do so.   So I think my plan is to stay home until directed otherwise.   Favourite food and place to hangout? I like a really great slice of pizza.  When it has that thin crust that's charred but chewy and when the ingredients are fresh and properly prepared.  New York, NY has the best pizza I've had so far.  And I think Bø, Norway has the worst, (so far). My Favorite place to hang out is a local place called The Owl in my home town of Lethbridge, AB.  The place is a shining light in this city and we're so lucky to have it.  If you're in the area, definitely stop in, and tell Steven I sent you. Second place goes to the entire city of Berlin, Germany.  Third place goes to Sonny's bar in Brooklyn, NY. https://www.facebook.com/rylandmoranz/

Where are you currently based?

Lethbridge, Alberta.  Canada.

How did you first start playing music?
I’ve actually grown up playing music.  My folks are musicians and helped start my home town music festival in the 80’s, my sister and I like to joke that it’s their oldest (and favorite) child.  I started with playing mandolin when I was nine, then I moved on to guitar at 13 like we all do.  I couldn’t ever feel satisfied with playing one thing though, I always wanted to play them all.  I had lots of great role models around that played lots of things so I didn’t have to look too far for help or inspiration.  It was really just a “put one foot in front of the other” sort of situation.

I’ve been really lucky through all this Covid business.  So far all my immediate people are healthy and carrying on as best they can.  I’m actually particularly lucky to be able to put a record out during this mess.  When all this began I didn’t think I’d be in a position to put a record out, but Tonic and everyone working on the release have done an amazing job. DAZN, the leading global sports destination, has unveiled its latest DAZN Originals production “Club Ibiza: The Sessions”. A unique, inside look at UD Ibiza, a Spanish football club driven by the passion of president Amadeo Salvo and his brothers David and Lalo who have a dream to take the team to La Liga.  The 5-part series features intimate interviews with Amadeo Salvo, Italian football superstar Marco Borriello and Ibiza-born international DJs Anna Tur and Manu Gonzalez, among others. The series’ exclusive title track was produced by dance pioneer and world-famous DJ Carl Cox and features new music by Anna Tur and Manu Gonzalez.  DAZN’s SVP Original Programming, Grant Best said about the participation of Anna Tur:  “Being able to bring together the music of Anna Tur and Carl Cox into the series was so important. I wanted our viewers to hear sounds not only enjoyed by many each summer on the island but that represent the heritage and soul of Ibiza. Anna Tur’s 'Yeu,Yeu,Yeu´ does this beautifully. When researching for the UD Ibiza documentary I wanted to have voices throughout that originated from the island. Away from the football project Anna Tur gives us the authenticity and purity of what Ibiza is about. Having people like Anna and Manu Gonzalez who are from Ibiza provided our viewers with the local knowledge and understanding of this beautiful magical place”. And in Anna Tur’s words:  “For me, recording with DAZN has been a great experience. It was a pleasure to work with such a professional, dynamic and creative team. I really like the fusion that they’ve made combining football with music, nature and leisure. The balance that the island needs. I am extremely happy to have collaborated with Carl Cox and my good friend Manu Gonzalez on the soundtrack”. Surrounded by iconic dance clubs, the world’s best DJs and the most stunning Balearic beaches, ‘Club Ibiza: The Sessions’ takes you on a season-long journey into the heart of the most famous island in the world.
