PETRIC RETURN WITH STRIKING NEW SINGLE "DÉJÀ VU"
Music InterviewsMusic News

Petric

by the partae August 28, 2020
written by the partae
What is your name and role within Petric?
Jason Petric, guitarist, singer, songwriter… and I do all the grunt work

How did Petric form?
The evolution of Petric continues to roll. Petric really took shape in the summer of 2013. At the time it was the “Jason Petric” project. I had a few solo albums out, and was doing my best to dig into the industry. Jordan and I were gigging all over Manitoba. Bars, clubs, festivals, every opportunity we could get to perform, we took it. Tom started making guest appearances at all these shows. He would come up to sing a song or two, and it was always those songs that sounded the best. The chemistry, the harmonies, the energy that the 3 of us had when performing those songs, it was undeniable. Shortly after that, we committed to changing the project to PETRIC.

Where are you currently based?
Winnipeg MB is where we have always been out of, and continue to call home.

How has your COVID experience been so far?
I think most of the band has quite enjoyed having the summer home. No traveling, no rehearsals, extra time with the family. Its all good. Fortunately, everyone has been healthy, and we’ve had this new music to prepare.

You have a single ‘Deja Vu’ out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting?
I always thought the title Deja Vu was cool. This song was written years ago. We had really really wanted this track to be part of the 18 Ends EP, but it never happened at that time. This song really grew into the song it is now over a lot of time, and of effort. Our band, and producer really helps us a lot with finding the sound at times, and this song was definitely a collaboration from everyone

How did you go about writing De Ja Vu?
We wrote this song with Seth Mosely, and Brad Rempel from High Valley a few years ago. It was an awesome experience to work with both those guys. I think we all knew this song was going to get recorded one day. It instantly felt good.

You also have a new album on the way, please tell us about the song writing process and what the album means to you:
This album means absolutely everything to us. This album is PETRIC. We must have written 50 songs for this project, and listened to 50 more. The band, Tom, Jordan, our drummer Jon Plet, bassist Ben Mak, and myself, we rehearsed for months, leading up to every studio session. We challenged each other every step of the way(and it wasn’t always friendly). So to be here now, and feel very satisfied with the music, it’s a great feeling of accomplishment.

Where and when did you record/produce?
We recorded at Bedside Studios in Winnipeg. We flew our producer Chris Baseford up a couple times(Once in the middle of January when it was -40…sorry dude).

What programs/instruments did you use and how did you approach the recording process?
I’m pretty sure we didn’t use any spoons… everything else made it haha

Who are you listening to at the moment?
Chris Cornell. His voice has really found a home in my soul the last few months.

What do you like to do away from music?
Family. I’m newly married to a lovely girl named Laura. I have a step daughter named Hunter, 2 dogs, and 3 cats. There’s a lot of love in our house, and its the only thing that I want to be doing.

What’s planned for the remainder of 2020 going into 2021?
Like you mentioned, we have a new album coming out. We’ve shot 2 music videos already. 1 more needs to be filmed. We’ve already started to discuss getting back into the studio for February. We have a few more songs we want to get out of us.

Favourite food and place to hangout?
The Forks/The Common in Winnipeg. The Forks has always been the meeting place in Manitoba. It’s got such a cool atmosphere. It’s my favorite place in Winnipeg forsure.

CROOKED COLOURS UNVEIL ‘LOVE LANGUAGE’ ACCLAIMED AUSTRALIAN INDIE-DANCE TRIO RETURN WITH EUPHORIC NEW SINGLE LONG-AWAITED NEW TRACK ARRIVES ALONGSIDE OFFICIAL COMPANION VIDEO

Acclaimed Australian indie-dance trio Crooked Colours have unveiled their brilliant new single – ‘Love Language’ –  available now at all DSPs and streaming services HERE. The uplifting, euphoric new track exemplifies an evolution for the trailblazing band. Cymbals brush up against finger-snaps as lead singer Phil Slabber’s dynamic voice carries an intimate verse over a skittering beat and rich bass groove. Highlighted by lush keys, the vocals stretch into a hypnotic high register. ‘Love Language’ is joined by an equally bright companion video, streaming now via the band’s YouTube HERE.

“Phil had written the lyrics when he was living in L.A. at the end of last year,” recalls Leon Debaughn [keys, production], “We slowly worked on the music from there. I think it’s important to release a song like this right now. There should be some more love in the world.” Elaborating on the lyrical content of the new single Philip Slabber [vocals, guitar, production] continues, “This song is about the different ways in which we communicate our love for each other. How special it is to find someone that speaks the same love language as you. It’s a celebration of the uniqueness of relationships.”

Crooked Colours have quickly earned applause as one of Australia’s hottest new electronic acts, scoring over 100 million worldwide streams thus far with a series of increasingly popular tracks – including the breakthrough single, ‘Flow‘ – and show-stealing festival performances around the globe. Selected by triple j as a Feature Album for “expanding their spellbinding sonic world,” LANGATA, the band’s 2019 sophomore album, was a feature album on hit #1 on the Dance Albums Chart as well as top 10 on the overall ARIA Albums Chart, fueled in part by tracks like ‘Do It Like You,’ ‘I’ll Be There‘, and ‘Never Dance Alone (Feat. Ladyhawke).’

Recently, the band spent over a year touring around the world and playing massive sold-out shows throughout North America as well as breakout performances at festivals such as Bonnaroo, Firefly, Electric Forest, Life Is Beautiful, CRSSD and more. This past March, while on the road with fellow Australian band RÜFÜS DU SOL, the band put their touring on pause in order to ensure the safety of their fans and crew. The band is looking forward to touring again and playing rescheduled dates at Brooklyn Mirage in New York, Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Denver and festivals such as Outside Lands and Lightning In A Bottle in California.

ABOUT CROOKED COLOURS:

Extracting harmony from the union of seemingly disparate elements, Crooked Colours exist at an elusive crossroads between delicate acoustic instrumentation, evocative vocals, and dancefloor-ready synth transmissions. The Australian trio—Phil Slabber [vocals, guitar, production], Leon Debaughn [keys, production], and Liam Merrett-Park [drums]—could just as easily soothe a quaint coffeehouse or a chaotic club. Generating over 100 million streams, selling out shows on multiple continents, and garnering looks from Billboard, NME, YourEDM, This Song Is Sick, and more, the group further sharpen this shape-shifting sound on a series of singles and their forthcoming debut for Atlantic Records.

Crooked Colours have spent quarantine back in Fremantle, Western Australia to focus on creating new music. Stay tuned for more exciting releases from the rising band, “Love Language” is the first taste of what’s to come!

After releasing a track a month from their staggered EP titled ‘Collaborations of Very Isolated Delinquents “19’, Gold Coast-based party starters Bootleg Rascal have just unveiled the capstone in final track ‘Falling Star’ featuring Saint Lane – produced by the band themselves, Ian Pritchett (Boo Seeka, Kim Churchill, Angus and Julia Stone), and Simon Dobson (Little May, STUPID BABY).

‘Falling Star’ is a slow burning slice of sophisticated hip hop that maintains an unwavering beat and groove throughout its entirety. The track features rising stars Saint Lane on the second verse with his effortlessly executed cadences, and A.GIRL on back-up vocals with her smooth and sultry brand of R&B.

“We’re stoked to finally work with some of our good friends Lane and Angel,” says frontman Carlos Lara. “’Falling Star’ is one of our favourite tracks from the record, so to have them come in and lay down their parts is really special to us. The track itself is a metaphor I coined for when you’re smitten by someone you’ve just met, but it eventually all just fizzles out. I’m a hopeless romantic, so if I meet someone I click with, I like to start exploring whether there’s a legit connection or not. Sadly, sometimes the more you get to know the person, you realise they’re not right for you. Just like a falling star, it’s beautiful and exciting, but over really quickly.” He continues.

Gold Coast-based New Zealand born rapper Saint Lane burst onto the scene in 2019, picking up praise from the likes of triple j, The Needle Drop, NME, The Guardian, GQ, Billboard and Beats 1 with Briggs. He’s also traversed the country, sharing stages with Lime Cordiale, JID and Bootleg Rascal.

Since their mid-2013 inception, Bootleg Rascal have released a slew of singles, an EP and two albums, all warmly received by critics and fans around the world, with support from the likes of NME, The Line of Best Fit, Clash Magazine, Pilerats and Wonderland Magazine. Multiple tracks have been added to Spotify and Apple Music playlists, high rotation on triple j and they’ve performed on the station’s esteemed ‘Like a Version’ segment.

The band have continually traversed the globe playing multiple sold out headline shows in France, UK, Holland, Germany, New Zealand and Australia, and performed sold out shows in the USA. They’ve also regularly appeared on major Australian festivals including Falls Festival, The Big Pineapple Festival, Lost Paradise, Hills are Alive, Festival of the Sun and Party in the Paddock.

And The Animal is Niki and Gori. Two creatures from a different dimension that create music and through their spells make a group of humans play it. They have a pet called KATA that gives them potions for inspiration. The 6 tracks on ‘Zinko’ are an eclectic journey packed with electronic, groovy and powerful beats. "Zinko definitely presents a different color in our music, compared to what we have done in the past. Our music has always been very eclectic, as we merge different genres and use instruments that are uncommon in electronic music. Most of our past albums have always been on the darker side. This time we decided to go in a different direction and the timing to do that was just perfect. Elianne Nascimento, an amazing and very talented singer from Brazil, joined And The Animal as we were writing this album. We realized how versatile she was and how much power and soul her voice had. We had been thinking of creating something more funky and summery and she just brought the last element we needed to accomplish that." Zinko opens with ‘Dragonfly’, an electro-pop banger that immediately captivates the listener. The release’s tunes travel through hip hop beats, house and EDM tones, plus a very cinematic-action-like element that the band experimented with. "We added a horn section in one of our songs (Out Of My Head), which infused a very unique ‘oh wow’ element to it." The release is meant to sync in perfectly with a summer lifestyle. Zinko is effortlessly warm and sunny electric music, slinking between the groovy sounds of 'Persia' to a trip to 'Neon Skies'. It all makes you feel like a million dollars. For the single ‘Moonlight’, which came out in the spring, And The Animal collaborated with Chicago rapper D.tha.G.. "He brought his very own west coast hip hop style that makes this song a summer must listen. This single is also included in his newly released EP. The idea behind doing this tune was that it would be a good way to transition to our new EP, Zinko, which would be different from what we have done before." And The Animal’s live shows are a very sensorial experience. Their dreamy and dancy tunes going along with magical visuals flooding the stage, make it a must see show.

SLY WITHERS RELEASE NEW SINGLE AND VIDEO ‘CRACKS’

by the partae August 27, 2020
written by the partae

“Wonderful songwriting that is both aggressive and tender.” – Tone Deaf

“They’ve transformed and blossomed into something remarkably special.” – Pilerats

“Taking the high bar the Perth four-piece set for themselves in 2019 and shattering it with an
emotional blast.” – Scenezine

Indie rock outfit Sly Withers might still be Australia’s best kept secret, but the word looks set to explode on the Perth four-piece with the release of their brand-new single and video today – ‘Cracks.’

Arriving as the first single from their forthcoming new album, ‘Cracks’ showcases the sonic and songwriting dynamics ofa band really stepping into their own, as co-frontmen Sam Blitvich and Jono Mata trade lead vocals through a song that’s bursting with the energy and emotion that has become their trademark. ‘Cracks’ premiered this week on triple j’s Good Nights program, continuing the outstanding support the band has had from the national youth broadcaster.

“I think the understanding between the two of us is ever-growing,” says Blitvich of his relationship writing and singing alongside Mata. “I really like the way we’re sharing songs – both doing lead vocals in certain sections. And for ‘Cracks’ Jono wrote a bridge for it off a little melodic idea I had and then on a plane ride back from over east one time I wrote a bridge for it without knowing he’d already written one. That’s how ‘Cracks’ kind of came together. Those kind of things have been really cool to get more in sync with each other in a way that we’ve always strived to do.”

Produced by Matt Templeman (Make Them Suffer – Worlds Apart) ‘Cracks’ highlights the massive step up in production the band has made since the recording of their breakout EP, 2019’s Gravis, with Blitvich explaining they have a much greater sense of who they are in the studio thanks to, “Temp’s help.”

“I feel like we’ve really fine tuned into exactly what the best possible process is for us. We’ve refined how our studio process works between Jono and I, and between us and Temp.”

The single’s release also comes with a brand-new video that was premiered by the excellent taste purveyors at Pilerats. Made during the COVID restrictions, the socially-distanced clip is undeniably clever in its use of scenery, space and scene edits, bringing an impression of what one of the band member’s dads described as like being a physical representation of a Zoom meeting.

“We had no background idea to the video other than like, ‘Let’s have some backgrounds and move them around’,” says Mata. “But the first time Joel [Neubecker, SW drummer] showed his dad, he was like “Oh it’s like a Zoom call, isn’t it?!”

Directed by regular collaborator Tim Elphick, the video resonates with the casual approach of a director clearly connected to the band and their vision. “It’s always fun making videos with Tim,” says Mata. “Tim’s always our guy. The reason we love working with Tim is he’s the only person we’ve ever done a clip with where he puts you at ease.”

After coming to national attention off the back of the Gravis EP and most notably their collaboration with fellow WA rising star, Carla Geneve – ‘Lately’ – Sly Withers launched into 2020 with the barnstorming single ‘Explode Into View.’ Plans to support the single with a sold out national tour were put on the back burner, sadly also leading to the cancellation of a debut appearance at Splendour In The Grass.

However, the delay has only lead the band to honing their sound as they focus on becoming one of the biggest exports from West Australia’s incredibly fertile music scene. ‘Cracks’ is the very first taste of a new-found confidence and maturity that looks certain to leave the band’s ever-growing fanbase salivating for more.

LUCA BRASI DROP NEW TRACK DYING TO FEEL ALIVE, SELL OUT ACOUSTIC TOUR

by the partae August 27, 2020
written by the partae

Luca Brasi have released their new single Dying to Feel Alive, out today via Cooking Vinyl Australia.

With this new track, Tasmania’s favourite sons have now delivered the third taste of new music taken from a forthcoming Luca Brasi album. Frontman Tyler Richardson describes Dying to Feel Alive as, “a reflection on resting on your laurels, but also trying to feel positive about good things, and taking stock. Pressing pause feels impossible most of the time, running myself ragged is the only time I even think about giving myself a break. Gotta have a second to feel the sun on your face when you can grab it.”

As a precursor to the new music, Luca Brasi recently announced they’ll be grabbing their acoustic guitars (aka “coward sticks”) for a special run of intimate live shows in their home state of Tasmania. Taking in Hobart, Launceston, and the boys’ hometown of St. Helens, the band announced the gigs on their socials earlier this month, and before the day was out, had sold out a whopping eight shows across the three cities. Fellow Taswegian songwriter Kat Edwards will be joining on all shows.

Jonny Reebok Releases Double A-Side 'Aphrodite Dub/Ghost Town Riddim' Via Soothsayer

Jonny Reebok Releases Double A-Side ‘Aphrodite Dub/Ghost Town Riddim’ Via Soothsayer

by the partae August 27, 2020
written by the partae
“Fans of Burial should dig this one for sure.” – International DJ Mag

“Jonny is a slinky character, breezing in and out of our lives with carefully sculpted house grooves in his wake.” – Dave Ruby Howe (triple j Unearthed)

“Mixing UKG, jungle and dub, [Aphrodite Dub] is a cruisy track that packs a serious punch when it comes to showing off Reebok‘s refined production skills.”
– Purple Sneakers

Two weeks ago, Sydney-via-UK producer Jonny Reebok released his debut track ‘Aphrodite Dub’ on Soothsayer. In that time the song has made quite the splash online, premiering on Majestic Casual before being added to the channel’s Spotify playlist, along with Friday Cratediggers in the US. On Apple Music, ‘Aphrodite Dub’ was added to Loops globally, Electronic Daily, New In: Electronic, indie + chill, Electronic Hot Tracks in the US and New Music Daily locally.

Today, Soothsayer is thrilled to release ‘Aphrodite Dub’ back-to-back with new track ‘Ghost Town Riddim’, the smooth dubstep offering that completes the double A-side package. Riding at 140 BPM, ‘Ghost Town Riddim’ is a moody track that heightens the senses. Reminiscent of original Dubstep pioneers ala self-titled era Skream, Benga and Kode9 – it’s heady, rich and immersive all the while being a sound all of his own.
“‘Ghost Town Riddim’ is a straight up dubstep track, inspired by the mood of The Specials ‘Ghost Town’. I couldn’t help myself but add some classic breaks 2 into the mix. These tracks are my first time experimenting with sending digital sounds through analogue equipment. Kinda wild to think that my sound has gone from house 2 garage 2 dubstep just like the original UK scenes progressed in the 90s into the 2000s.” – Jonny Reebok
Jonny Reebok has been creating first-rate club tunes since his 2018 online release ‘You Don’t Know Flavours Bwoy’ which saw radio love from triple j and FBi. His infamous remix of Soothsayer’s electronic duo ALTA’s single ‘Figured Out’ has amassed over 1 million plays on streaming services and has seen him curate mixes for Let Them Eat Cake as well as perform alongside the likes of Shanti Celeste, Moxie and Peach at Colour Club in 2019.

‘Aphrodite Dub/Ghost Town Riddim’ sees Jonny Reebok cement himself as an artist on the rise. Soothsayer is thrilled to share this double A-side from the Sydney-sider and can’t wait to see what’s next.

Tune in as Jonny Reebok takes over the Rinse FM airwaves with a special guest mix this Saturday, August 29 6PM BST/3:00AM AEST.

Toronto based DJ and producer Velvet Code launched his very own label SO FIERCE MUSIC, taking a stand for equality, diversity, and creativity. The imprint wants to give artists a voice and platform, no matter their age, race, gender, or sexual identity.

Velvet Code has been active in the music industry for over 20 years and experienced how difficult it can be for LGBTQ+ artists to be seen and heard. “Music executives, former managers, and agents tried to muzzle or tried to force me to play “straight”. I was convinced for years that I had to if I wanted any chance the mainstream music industry was going to pay attention. Well, I refuse to live a lie or change who I am just to please anyone. I was born this way, baby! My hope is that SO FIERCE MUSIC will give people a platform and safe space where an LGBTQ2+ artist or ally can express themselves while gaining an opportunity to make a living from a music career.”

The first release on the label is set for September 25th with the supreme Sofonda Cox. The immensely talented drag queen worked together with Velvet Code on her brand-new track ‘Thrive’. Sofonda has been chosen as TD Bank’s pride ambassador for many years in a row, performs annually at the Toronto Pride PRISM festival, and at clubs across the US, Brazil, Malaysia, and Mexico. A true inspiration and the perfect artist to kick off the musical vision of the label.

For each release, SO FIERCE MUSIC will unleash a special merch line. Designed by Velvet Code and his team, the assets will consist of clack fans, shirts, tops, and hoodies.

On the new track, the band notes: “This song shows a completely different style and edge that we haven’t ever explored before. The new release follows their 2019 singles “Something To Do With You” and “Single Problem”, which earned over one million streams and was the highest charting single by an independent artist in 2019 (peaking at #19). Forming in 2015, PETRIC was discovered by JUNO Award winner Dallas Smith while showcasing at Country Music Week. Since then, Manitoba brothers Jason and Tom Petric and longtime friend Jordan Day have racked up over twelve million streams, 315K+ views on YouTube, three Top 20 singles on Canadian country radio, and four Manitoba Country Music Awards. MOURN Announce forthcoming album Self Worth Share new single ‘This Feeling Is Digusting’

by the partae August 27, 2020
written by the partae
Praise for first single ‘Call You Back’
“Mourn is taking a different approach to these times” – Billboard
“Song of the Day” – KEXP
“Serrated, infectiously melodic” – Stereogum
“90s emo-core realness that feels jagged and beautiful” – REMEZCLA
“Early-aughts alt at its finest” – Jezebel

Today Barcelona trio, MOURN, announces their forthcoming album, Self Worth, out Friday 30 October via Captured Tracks / Remote Control. Along with the announcement, MOURN released their second single and music video for ‘This Feeling Is Disgusting’. The video opens on the trio during a therapy session about the current state of the world and articulates the honest, angsty emotion that “it sucks.” Two chords and a small melody tame the listener before the storm breaks: the future is uncertain, but they want this to work out. The single follows the release of ‘Call You Back’ that Stereogum called “serrated and infectiously melodic” and KEXP hailed as their “Song of the Day.”

MOURN on ‘This Feeling Is Disgusting‘: “The song is really about fear of the future, being anxious about what’s going to happen, not knowing if you’re going to be able to earn a living or not. It’s a really happy song, but one that represents being stressed out. The idea of “I don’t know if I’ll be able to afford an apartment any time soon, but hey, let’s dance and have fun!” That’s the concept behind it, and that’s what I was thinking about while writing the lyrics. I also thought about my parents, and everyone’s parents. They often have high expectations for you, or they want a certain lifestyle for you, and you don’t always agree with that. So you try so hard to do life your own way, but you’re super stressed out and you’re scared, and every now and then you think “Is it worth it?” In the end, I think it’s worth it.“

MOURN on video: “The video represents us in therapy. The psychologist in the video is our drummer Victor. I was recently diagnosed with depression and severe anxiety, so I’ve been going to therapy myself, and we wanted to show that in a positive way, to make it fun and lighthearted, and let people know that it’s ok to go to therapy and to take care of yourself.  We wanted the video to represent how we feel, and the crazy thoughts we have within the space of a therapy office. You can see that throughout the video, even when the setting changes, the sofa and the therapist’s chair are always in the scene. We’re always in that physical space, but our brains take us to happier places. It’s about trying to find your happy place within all the negative feelings.”

Adversity does not incite the best feelings: frustration, anger, fear, anxiety – nothing unusual for today’s world. The members of MOURN know quite a bit about these setbacks, but a latent belief persists within: the negative will eventually become positive. It’s the belief of facing and overcoming a problem. To come out reinforced: the wonder of resilience. It’s the belief of what they are worth, whatever people say. It’s the name they chose for their new album: Self Worth. MOURN is an enclave of post-teens dealing with the dilemmas of adult life. “This album gave us what we needed: self-worth, the desire to go forward, to love ourselves, with everything, with the good and bad. This album empowers us.”

A lot’s changed for the Catalan three-piece since the release of Sorpresa Familia, their boisterous 2018 record, that was praised by Pitchfork complementing their “newfound maturity of songcraft without sacrificing youthful energy” and NPR saying “equal parts joy and rage.” They’ve undergone a lineup change (drummer Antonio Postius left the band in 2019) and done a fair amount of growing up. As a result, they don’t feel as angry as they did on Sorpresa – their new music is brighter, borne of a more peaceful, collaborative creative process. The band isn’t the same as when they formed. The world isn’t either. MOURN grew up, and that’s evident in the songs that make up Self Worth. Their melodies – energetic and captivating – venture into less level grounds, and their lyrics show their newfound readiness to tackle issues of a different weight and size

Death Bells Share New Track 'A Different Kind Of Happy'

Death Bells Share New Track ‘A Different Kind Of Happy’

by the partae August 27, 2020
written by the partae

Today Death Bells share ‘A Different Kind of Happy‘, a track celebrating small moments of ‘bliss and pure satisfaction’. The duo’s new album New Signs of Life is due 25th September via Dais Records, pre-order here: https://n-s-o-l.com/

The song’s freeing, gossamer guitars, inspired by Cleaners From Venus, lift the track to celestial heights, with the earnest vocals affirming “Despite the uncertainty of life, I wouldn’t give, I wouldn’t give up“. The track celebrates the fleeting moments when you feel totally at peace, the band twisting their usual darkly atmospheric sound to shimmer and shine.

The band explain the track: “This song conveys a feeling of bliss. It was written last year – there were a couple of fleeting moments where everything felt like it was in it’s right place. It was awesome. Obviously times are different now but we still have a lot to be thankful for, and our optimism remains intact.”

Watch the video for ‘A Different Kind Of Happy’ HERE

Death Bells is the longtime musical collaboration between Will Canning and Remy Veselis. Formed in 2015 during their late adolescent years in Sydney, Australia, the act has proven to be a mainstay in the alternative underground musical landscape both in their homeland and overseas during their five-year history. Blurring the lines of post-punk and garage rock, Death Bells has morphed and transformed as the two members have grown up throughout their late teenage years living together into early adulthood. With Canning’s distinctive baritone and the kinetic collection of reverb-drenched leads by Veselis being a constant during their musical output, the two made the permanent move 7,000 miles away to Los Angeles, California in 2018 where the current incarnation of Death Bells has blossomed.

Following the releases of their debut E.P, much-loved first album, and seven-inch single on Funeral Party Records and their 2019 single on Metropolitan Indian, Death Bells have joined the Dais Records family for their highly anticipated sophomore album New Signs of Life. Three years in the making, the release sees the act embrace their diverse tastes to deliver unforgettable hooks and more expansive sounds across its nine graceful songs.

Engineered and mixed under the attentive eye of Colin Knight at Paradise Studios throughout mid-to-late 2019, New Signs of Life is the band’s most complete work to date. Along with classic Death Bells brooding romanticism, the themes of the record divulge personal insight into their move across the world and both the strained and new relationships that have materialised throughout their existence. Slated for release on September 25th, New Signs of Life is as advertised – it is the career-defining new chapter to commence the new decade.

PSYCHEDELIC PORN CRUMPETS share twisted fairytale claymation video for Mr. Prism Second Perth show announced to meet demand!

Psychedelic Porn Crumpets share twisted fairytale claymation video for Mr. Prism, Second Perth show announced to meet demand!

by the partae August 27, 2020
written by the partae

Following the release of ‘Mr. Prism’ earlier this month, their first single of 2020, Psychedelic Porn Crumpets today share an adventure-filled clay animation video for the song. Created by Oliver Jones, who the band have collaborated with previously on their similarly kaleidoscopic videos, the video for ‘Mr. Prism’ takes us on a colourful journey through ‘sweetsville’, with some surprisingly dark encounters along the way.

Bounding along with maximum energy from the onset, ‘Mr. Prism’ is relentless in its approach – a fiery reminder of the type of band Psychedelic Porn Crumpets have grown into over the last few years on the road. For McEwan, the song was born out of the feverish haze only illness and a crazy tour schedule can bring: “After our last tour of Europe I had a plethora of reasons to see a doctor. First, he thought I had tonsillitis, so prescribed me penicillin, which didn’t help at all. I did Falls Festival over New Year’s and barely got through – turns out I had pneumonia. I was pushing through on all sorts of meds until someone offered me the HMS Hunter alternative and I realised no matter how I’d ever be, I could never turn one down. Mr. Prism (my sickly fun-fuelled fiend of an alter-ego) was born.”

On the creation of the video, McEwan says: “A prismatic man needs a colourful adventure, so when we were throwing ideas back & forth with Oliver it was hard to pass on an edible Claymation. All of us were in awe when he sent us through the final animation – proper cherry-on-top work!”

PRAISE FOR MR. PRISM

“Jumbo sized excellence from PPC! This is exactly the kind of daily boost we all need in our lives. Big frenetic energy and thrill that’ll have you wide awake and ready to take on the world. “
Triple J Claire Mooney

“A majestic piece of four-minute rock that captures the group doing exactly what they do best – melting faces on and off the stage”. Tonedeaf

“A warped, propulsive new single titled ‘Mr. Prism’. Anchoring around its winding rhythms and feverish textural build-ups” Music Feeds

“A supercharged firework spreading wild af but good natured vibes wherever it’s played”.
 Life Without Andy

“Psychedelic Porn Crumpets have shared their whirlwind new single Mr. Prism to fuel your soul and give you the energy you need to get through the week.” Happy Mag

“Hmmmm ok then, just pop your head in to hit us with what might be one of your best tracks to date why don’t you. Galloping full tilt and in resplendent glory.” Triple J Unearthed Tommy Faith

Zero

written by the partae

Where are you currently based?

At the moment I’m based in Woking, just south of London. Not much going on here unfortunately compared to Brighton where I’d previously lived for 4 years before that. Currently looking to move further into London or maybe up north to Manchester!

How did you first start playing music?

I mean I first stared DJ’ing and playing out in early 2017, because up until then I had no clue how to mix and was solely a producer. I was aware of how important it is to be able to DJ as well as make bangers if you wanted to make a living out of all of it, and my music started to get some attention around that time so it was only natural.

What’s been happening recently?

Not a lot haha. Same for everyone I suppose. I’ve been keeping myself really busy though and have been crazy productive over the last 4 months or whatever it’s been now. Lost count at this point. I’ve made a silly amount of music, a lot of which with vocalists and features which previously I hadn’t delved too much into. So overall my production has improved massively I feel and I reckon I’m easily making the best music I’ve ever made atm.

You’ve been a main stayer and champion of UK Bassline for years, how did you first become involved and what do you attribute to your success?

I first broke into the scene through this competition in the summer of 2016. This group called bass music group on Facebook called Lengoland hosted the first-ever ‘war dubs’, a knockout competition where producers basically went head to head with each other to see who could make the better/crazier tune, which then went down to a vote. There were a few spaces left so I thought fuck it what’s the worst that can happen, I’ve not got anything else going on. I’d only ever made like 2 bass tunes before this so was a bit sceptical but ended up getting to the semi-finals and having 3 of the 4 tunes I made released as free downloads, which is where it all kicked off really! Quite lucky to be honest as if it wasn’t for me just going for it and that group even existing, I don’t think I’d be doing what I’m doing now to be honest.

Please tell us about how your sound is progressing through experimentation:

You’ve basically answered the question yourself there! That is exactly how my sound is progressing and evolving. Through experimentation and the intent to try make stuff that sounds different to everyone else. That’s always what I’ve tried to do. Whilst of course keeping things familiar to the UK bass sound and genre so it can appeal to a wider audience as well.

Where and when did you produce and what programs/instruments did you use?

I actually made the main melody that the whole track is based around in Skepsis’ studio whilst we were trying to come up with a 2nd tune. We’d finished Hijack and were tryna work separately just to get ideas going and I made that riff sitting on his couch. We didn’t manage to do anything with it so he just told me to use it myself, and I’d already wrote the lyrics for 1 more a weeks before so I just thought alright let’s try get these to work together, and they did! I produce on Logic and have done since day 1 so that’s what I used. Mainly use Serum for all my bases and then just a whole range of different sounds, plugins, instruments and samples to make the rest of the track.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

No one in particular to be fair, but if i were to pick my favourite 3 tracks atm they’d be:

Shaun Dean & Harry Tremlett – The Sound (did you know)

Alcemist & EJ Kitto – The Plan

Mella Dee – Dev Green

Please tell us about your new single ‘1 More’ Feat EJ Kitto, what influenced the sound and songwriting and how did you come to work with EJ Kitto?

I’ve been working on it since January and it’s been a right pain to mix down, so now it’s done and is getting released I am buzzing. The track is supposed to be from a ravers point of view, early in the morning deep into the crowd surrounded by his/her mates, in what feels like a complete haze of tunes, drinks, smoke and lasers. The lyrics are supposed to just encapsulate what it’s like to go to a UK bass music event. They all finally decide to leave and go back to their mate’s house to continue the party. Me and Emma actually chat loads before without me even realising as she used to run a UK Bass promo page on Instagram where I’d send her videos to upload. It was only when I put out a Facebook status asking for a female vocalist with a London accent that my mate told me she was looking for features and would be ideal for the tune, which she was. She brings exactly what I asked for which is amazing. A spoken word kind of London accent – the main inspiration being Redlight and how he usually has similar female vocal lines on his tracks.Where and when did you produce and what programs/instruments did you use?

You’ve got some big records coming up in the next few months, please tell us more:

I can’t give too much away, but some of my next releases for the rest of the year include a tune with Bru-C, and one with Window Kid, a single release on Dr Fresch’s label, a single release on Chris Lorenzo’s label, and a 2 track dnb release. Its gonna be a wicked few months in terms of music.

Favourite food and place to hangout?

Steak and chips with stupid amounts of peppercorn sauce. Can’t beat it. Favourite place to hangout has got to be Brighton. Got so much love for that city as its basically where the whole Zero project started and grew in the early days. Best city in the UK, especially in the summer.
