NIC CESTER CREATES UNIQUE GLOBAL ISO PERFORMANCE OF ‘HARD TIMES’ + NEW MUSIC TO COME

by the partae May 21, 2020
written by the partae

While in lockdown in Milan (one of the hardest hit countries in Europe), Nic Cester has been writing songs for his second solo album, and creating a unique global fan video for ‘Hard Times’.

Last month, Nic put the call out on Instagram for fans to play along to ‘Hard Times’ with any type of instrument they could get their hands on. He received an overwhelming response, with contributions from Italy, Malaysia, USA, England, France, Germany, Brazil, Mexico, Spain, Scotland, Austria, Bulgaria, Slovakia, Belgium, and Australia. He has now compiled the clips to create global collaboration video for ‘Hard Times’.

Nic says, “The idea was simply to try and pass the time by sharing music with anyone else who was doing it tough at home, alone in quarantine.”

Originally recorded for Nic Cester’s album Sugar Rush, ‘Hard Times’ is a poignant song for these times, and at it’s core speaks of what we want to teach our children.

Recently, Nic has been keeping himself extremely busy writing new music for his next album, and continuing his work as a vocalist for the band The Jaded Hearts Club, a supergroup he is in alongside Miles Kane (The Last Shadow Puppets), Matt Bellamy (Muse), Graham Coxon (Blur), Jamie Davis (Transcopic), and Sean Payne (The Zutons).

Nic Cester is gearing up to release a live album, which was recorded across Europe with his band The Milano Elettrica.

MATHAME LAUNCH… PHOENIX A NEXT-GENERATION 3D LIVE STREAM & INTERACTIVE UNIVERSE

by the partae May 20, 2020
written by the partae

Following their latest single ‘Never Give Up’ via B1 Recordings/Ministry Of Sound which was awarded ‘The Essential New Tune’ accolade by BBC Radio 1’s Pete Tong, Mathame now launch their new multiplatform cinematic project, PHOENIX. The interdisciplinary brothers Amadeo and Matteo Giovanelli have innovated PHOENIX as an online stage and interactive space for both artists and music lovers.

PHOENIX is an enigmatic planet in orbit around the Earth. Using the latest 3D real-time technologies, it has hundreds of different settings where DJ’s and musicians can perform in outlandish scenarios and backgrounds. The groundbreaking project took two months to develop and, in future, will also be a web community akin to computer game and virtual universe, Second Life, where people can meet with their own avatar.

The virtual-reality world of PHOENIX recreates a kind of magic and emotion that listeners can immerse themselves into. Mathame’s reimagining of what the landscape of live streaming is capable of, gives the medium a uniquely innovative dimension. The project isn’t only a visual experience; PHOENIX is also raising funds for CESVI (Bergamo’s Hospital & Old Persons Assistance) via streaming platforms.

PRE-ORDER 'SPEAK UP' HERE PAUL KALKBRENNER - 'SPEAK UP' EP JUNE 5TH 2020 Paul Kalkbrenner came of age in East Berlin after the fall of the Berlin Wall, when techno arrived in the city. His two plus decade career is intertwined with the genre that emerged from Detroit and became a global cultural force. Paul’s grand techno sound has seen him fill stadiums and top charts, yet this new EP is deeply club focused music. It’s evidently Kalkbrenner, but 'Speak Up' is also lean and hard, its four tracks that return Paul to his rave roots, music for late nights, dancing in the dark.  'Laser In' opens the EP, with a broken beat sound. It’s all drums, skittery and distorted sounds that coalesce as the track moves along. It’s is a spikey track, dancey punk; it’s almost the opposite of 'Eyes Open', whose dark, squelchy and warm synths and melodies envelop you and pull you deeper.  'Check Yourself' is pure techno, propulsive, percussive, frantic and big. It’s music centered around the kick drum, an anthem designed to move a dancefloor. The EP closes with 'Speak Up', an example of what Paul does best when working with vocals. The track is simple, haunting and beautiful, full of melody and warmth, but minimally produced. 'Speak Up' follows the recent success of Kalkbrenner’s last vocal single ‘No Goodbye’, which has received over 15 million streams to date. Paul’s 'Speak Up' EP will be available as a limited edition vinyl - only 500 copies available worldwide on June 5th and it will feature an exclusive extended version of 'Speak Up'. The vinyl pre-sale begins May 22nd. Paul Kalkbrenner's 'Speak Up' EP will be available 5th June. Connect with Paul Kalkbrenner

We could all use some uplifting news right now, and the upcoming release of the first compilation from Tiësto’s Musical Freedom label since its inception in 2009 is definitely going to be making a lot of people happy this month. Due on May 29, the album features 20 hot new tracks that show off the breadth of the label’s styles.

PRE-SAVE HERE

The compilation features the first release from the amazing Breathe Carolina after the unveiling of their album, a hot new collaboration from Tiësto, DJs From Mars, Rudeejay and Dabrozz and much more from label artists including Valy Mo, Magnificence, Cheyenne Giles, Moska, BYOR and SWACQ. The label are calling it a ‘statement release’, to showcase their take on dance music by encapsulating all corners of the globe and the width of the genre in one mix. In an unprecedented time for dance music, the album also provides a valuable platform for producers making dancefloor music who currently aren’t able to reach audiences in the usual way. It’s their way of bringing the club to your home.

‘It’s great to have so many of our favorite artists together on one album project’, says Tiësto. ‘For over 10 years Musical Freedom has been a way to promote different styles and genres that sound unique & fresh, and work well on a dancefloor. It’s the sound of the cutting edge dancefloor, including highly-anticipated tracks that have been teased in Tiësto’s sets pre-lock down, and you can be sure to hear these tracks for years to come once clubs and festivals get back into the swing of things. Attention music lovers! It’s time to reveal the unmissable line-up for Episode Four of The State of Music – the weekly live-streamed program curated, filmed and recorded by Mushroom (in partnership with the VIC Government’s Victoria Together initiative). With a combined viewership reach of 1 million to date from the first three episodes, The State of Music series continues to showcase some of our finest artists to not only Australia but internationally.

Who caught Paul Kelly and Archie Roach’s performance of ‘Charcoal Lane’, or Tim Minchin’s ‘Most Wanted Man’? If you missed those captivating moments, watch Episode Three here.

Airing at the special time of Friday 22 May @ 7.30pm AEST this week, performing in Episode Four are (in alphabetical order):

ANDREW STOCKDALE (WOLFMOTHER), ASH GRUNWALD, DIDIRRI, ELLA HOOPER, GORDI, GRETTA RAY, HOODOO GURUS, KATE CEBERANO, KYLE LIONHART, THE ANGELS, THE TESKEY BROTHERS.

The Teskey Brothers are hoping for a #1 ARIA Album debut next week with their new record Live At The Forum – which, if successful, would be the first live album in five years to hit the top spot of the Aussie charts. Don’t miss their special performance on The State of Music, filmed inside the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV), which is currently closed to the public but available virtually at together.vic.gov.au.

Episode Four will be hosted by Triple M’s national Drive show host/TV alumni JANE KENNEDY, with fellow radio legend JANE GAZZO.

When ANDREW STOCKDALE formed the band WOLFMOTHER he had no idea how much his life would change. Their 2005 self-titled debut album was a global smash: 5 x times Platinum in Australia, landing festivals worldwide including Coachella, Lollapalooza, Reading, Rock In Rio + more. With two solo albums (Keep Moving and Slipstream) also up his sleeve and current album Rock n Roll Baby, Stockdale spent much of 2019 on the road. He joins the line-up for The State of Music this week.

ASH GRUNWALD is acclaimed as one of Australia’s finest live performers. His latest LP, Mojo, features appearances by The Teskey Brothers, Mahalia Barnes, Joe Bonamassa, The Cat Empire’s Harry James Angus and a who’s who of soul and blues greats. In 2019 Ash also released his first book, Surf By Day, Jam By Night, combining his two passions – music and surfing. Just one of his book interviewees may appear on Episode Four…

DIDIRRI grew up in Warrnambool, but his magnetic storytelling and electric charisma has taken him to the world. The former busker’s honest approach was first heard on his debut EP Measurements, which has reached over 30 million streams to date. DIDIRRI has shared the stage with Vance Joy, Hozier, Tash Sultana and The Temper Trap, while his latest single is ‘Don’t Fight With What You’re Fighting For’.

ELLA HOOPER – Loved for her debut in rock pop band Killing Heidi at just 13, Ella Hooper has been releasing intense, intelligent pop music ever since. A talented radio host, TV presenter and DJ, Ella’s songwriting has gained her a stack of awards (ARIAs, APRA, ACRAs) and two covers of Rolling Stone. One of Australia’s most recognised and distinctive front women, her new album Our Two Skins is due June 26.

‘Sandwiches’, the current single from Sydney-via-Canowindra singer/songwriter GORDI (Sophie Payten), has been all over radio, and she just dropped the stunning album track ‘Volcanic’. Since her 2017 J Award-nominated debut Reservoir, GORDI has released a song with Troye Sivan, toured with Sam Smith, Julien Baker and Fleet Foxes, and performed with The National, Bon Iver, Damien Rice and more.

In 2016, 18-year-old GRETTA RAY made quite the impression with her debut EP, Elsewhere. Four years on, she’s since won triple j Unearthed and the prestigious Vanda and Young Songwriting Competition, toured with Gang Of Youths, Vance Joy, Paul Kelly, The Rubens, and has a new album in the works. Gretta joins us for a special performance on The State of Music this week.

Australian rock icons HOODOO GURUS are synonymous with a slew of hits: ‘What’s My Scene’, ‘Miss Freelove ’69’, ‘Come Anytime’, ‘Bittersweet’, ‘My Girl’ and many more. Led by frontman Dave Faulkner and formed in 1981, with 9 x Gold and Platinum albums behind them and a global fanbase to this day the ‘Gurus are ARIA Hall of Fame inductees and remain one of the most popular and successful bands Australia has ever produced.

Multi-ARIA winner KATE CEBERANO (AM) has been performing for 35 years now, with 7 x Platinum and 7 x Gold albums across 27 releases – the most prolific Australian female recording artist of this era. Whether out front of I’m Talking, releasing solo LPs, acting as Artistic Director of the Adelaide Cabaret Festival, or starring in stage productions such as “Jesus Christ Superstar”, Hall of Fame inductee Ceberano is a bona fide national treasure.

Amassing over 20 million streams to date, Northern Rivers NSW singer KYLE LIONHART has sold out shows across the nation off the back of his acclaimed 2019 debut album, Too Young, which featured the gorgeous ‘Holding On’. Before that, there were early EPs Keep In Mind and Eleven & Two. Now he’s back with brand new single ‘Dream It Right’.

Jimmy Barnes says THE ANGELS changed Australian music forever. Now, 44 years after their first release, the legendary band have a new EP in Under The Stone, their first new material in six years. There are few more glorious sounds in Australian music than the blistering guitar attack of The Brewster brothers together with singer Dave Gleeson (The Screaming Jets) out front.

Warrandyte four-piece THE TESKEY BROTHERS sold out four nights at Melbourne’s iconic The Forum Theatre back in 2019. Now, the Grammy-nominated, ARIA winning four-piece have released their incredible new live album: titled Live At The Forum. To celebrate, the amazing Teskey’s have recorded two special tracks inside the National Gallery of Victoria for The State of Music – it’s not to be missed!

written by the partae

As this year’s festival summer grinds to a halt, Amsterdam-based The School of House rises to the occasion with the launch of their international e-learning platform schoolofhouse.com.

Bringing together the expertise of some of Holland’s leading artists and industry experts, they offer a comprehensive curriculum with education and consultancy from industry professionals—including DJs Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano, José Woldring (the PR-manager of Martin Garrix, Charlotte de Witte and Joris Voorn) (The Media Nanny), the social media strategist for Hardwell (NXTLI) and one of ID&T Events’ Brand Directors.

This is the first time The School of House’s content becomes accessible to aspiring and upcoming artists and dance music entrepreneurs around the world. The unique approach integrates video masterclasses, workbook assignments, feedback and consultancy, and covers a multitude of fields: DJ Skill & Performance, Career & Bookings, Music Production, Artist Profile & Social Media, Legal & Business and Press & Public Relations.

Hands-on Growth Strategy
Upcoming artists and entrepreneurs will find clear, in-depth answers to crucial questions like ‘Who am I as an artist?’ ‘How can I get booked at festivals and clubs?’ or ‘How do I make my fan base grow?’ A hands-on growth strategy is laid out in a series of useful assignments, arming students with purposeful skills, a broad understanding of dance music culture and a customized career plan for the future.

Courses and bundles come in all sizes and levels. Beginning DJ/producers can buy the complete Artist Starter Bundle, while more experienced can opt for the Artist Career Bundle—DIY only, or with added personal consultancy. They can also buy separate courses like Producing Your First Track in Ableton, Signing Your First Record Deal or Creating Content With Impact.

Founder Jan Maarten Hartong acknowledges these are trying times for the electronic music industry. “But I firmly believe in the agility and resilience of our scene and worldwide community. With this new platform, we hope to bring a positive and meaningful contribution to the future of both dance music’s culture and industry.”

The most promising artists are also linked to partnering festivals and labels to kickstart their career. Check out all the courses and bundles here.

Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano:

“Throughout our career we always felt we needed to give something back to the community that gave us everything. You just need to share your knowledge with talent. Give them the opportunities to become better than we are. That’s why we started our label SONO, hosting our own events and now created a course for The School of House. Great partners to spread our knowledge and insights to help talent all over the world in becoming better DJ’s and performers!“

About The School of House
Schoolofhouse.com is the digital companion to the physical School of House in the A’DAM Tower in Amsterdam—founded together with Dutch dance enterprise ID&T in 2015 on the idea of sharing 30 years of experience in electronic music and dance events. Its aim is to transfer knowledge within the dance industry and to further dance music culture, by instilling a deeper understanding of the history and core values of dance music.

The School of House operates with a world-wide network—the exchange of knowledge, experience and opportunities benefiting both the status quo and the new generation. Over 2500 talents from all over the world have already followed classes at the A’DAM Tower. Together with the Conservatory of Amsterdam, the school has also set up the Amsterdam Electronic Music Academy (AEMA), the first two-year course of its kind, educating talented musicians to become professional DJ/producers.

After dropping their latest record Internal Atomics at the back end of 2019, hardcore heavyweights, Stray From The Path are revealing the new music video for album highlight 'Beneath The Surface' today. The band's 10th studio album, Internal Atomics garnered praise from the likes of Billboard, Kerrang, Exclaim!, New Noise, and more. In true Stray From The Path style the release is a biting, socially-conscious album full of groove-laden riffs and pummeling drums, but it also contains a message of empathy and a desire for understanding. 'Beneath The Surface' is one of the album's most direct explorations of these universal themes, and also highlights Stray From The Path's ability to blend musical aggression with memorable hooks. STRAY FROM THE PATH REVEAL NEW MUSIC VIDEO ‘BENEATH THE SURFACE’ TAKEN FROM THE NEW ALBUM ‘INTERNAL ATOMICS’ OUT NOW VIA UNFD

After dropping their latest record Internal Atomics at the back end of 2019, hardcore heavyweights, Stray From The Path are revealing the new music video for album highlight ‘Beneath The Surface‘ today.

The band’s 10th studio album, Internal Atomics garnered praise from the likes of Billboard, Kerrang, Exclaim!, New Noise, and more. In true Stray From The Path style the release is a biting, socially-conscious album full of groove-laden riffs and pummeling drums, but it also contains a message of empathy and a desire for understanding.

‘Beneath The Surface’ is one of the album’s most direct explorations of these universal themes, and also highlights Stray From The Path’s ability to blend musical aggression with memorable hooks. The song’s music video was directed by the band’s bassist, Anthony Altamura.

Stray From The Path have been bringing their charged-up punk fury and politically outspoken voice to the masses for the better part of two decades and Internal Atomics is proof that they aren’t slowing down any time soon. The album finds the four-piece more ferocious and vocal than ever, a vital voice for reason, empathy, and change in challenging times.

Internal Atomics pushes Stray From The Path’s distinctive rhythmic aggression to breakneck levels while lyrically the record rails against apathy towards the suffering of others, toxic dog-eat-dog culture, myopic worldviews, institutional corruption, and more. Seeking to plant seeds of positive change, Internal Atomics provides both a release for frustration and a path to action.

The Meanies announce new record Desperate Measures, share lead single and video for ‘Cruel To Be Caned’.

by the partae May 20, 2020
written by the partae

Surprise! Australia’s momentous punk-rock heavyweights The Meanies have today lifted the lid on details of their forthcoming record, Desperate Measures, while also sharing ‘Cruel To Be Caned’, the lead single from the new album.

Desperate Measures, slated for release in July 2020 via Cheersquad Records and Tapes, marks the first studio album from the band since their victorious 2015 comeback record It’s Not Me, It’s You amassed a slew of standout album reviews across the country and reignited Australia’s longstanding love affair with the influential punk-rock outfit.

According to frontman Link Meanie, the album title Desperate Measures reflects the drastic strides we take to stomach the current state of the world.

“Desperate Measures is an album title for the times, whether it be applicable to the rise of right wing anti-intellectualism, the associated denial of impending environmentally apocalyptic disaster or the cultural lobotomy of today’s popular media,” says Link.

It’s hard to see a way through this miasma of illogical negativity without… (drum roll)… desperate measures.”

The charging lead single ‘Cruel To Be Caned’ depicts a tale of anxiety, depression and inevitable isolation, and the struggle knowing that such forced expulsion is at once entirely necessary, yet resented. The single also marks as the first time Meanies’ bassist Wally Meanie has taken lead vocal on a track.

Arriving with the new single is the video for ‘Cruel To Be Caned’, a kooky horror collage clip produced by Link Meanie himself.

HANNAH emerges with her debut single ‘Sweet & Sour’

by the partae May 20, 2020
written by the partae
“Sweet and sour and so god damn smooth too!”
– Dave Ruby Howe, triple j

“This is smooth, voice angelic. Keen to see what’s next for HANNAH.”
– Ilai Swindells, triple j

Melbourne singer-songwriter HANNAH today makes a smooth debut with her first single, ‘Sweet & Sour.’

Fusing HANNAH’s indie, pop and R&B influences into one song-sized bite, ‘Sweet & Sour’ is marked by its infectious groove, soulful lead vocal and sense of quiet confidence. “I wrote Sweet & Sour about control in a relationship, where someone can turn something that seems so good and perfect, and completely destroy it,” HANNAH explains.

Relatable and introspective, ‘Sweet & Sour’ reflects the raw emotions that develop when once-beautiful relationships sour. HANNAH explains: “I wrote Sweet & Sour about control in a relationship, where someone can turn something that seems so good and perfect, into the complete opposite. We have the power, the ego, and the control to let negative thoughts and emotions override opportunities for something good to happen in our lives. This song reflects just that, where control can turn something from so “sweet to sour.”

Her velvety track also arrives accompanied by a video clip. Filmed in a sultry red hue, the clip was filmed at the iconic Melbourne BakeHouse Studio’s in Richmond, and features local artists, Julian Steel, Ryan Schmidt, and JAYDEAN, who had featured in Kaiit’s OG Luv. Kush pt.2.

Since being uploaded to triple j Unearthed in late April, the song has already received praise from triple j Unearthed. Prior to today’s release, HANNAH has already been building her name within the Melbourne scene, performing at iconic venues like The Gasometer and Workers Club and drawing favourable comparisons to fellow powerhouse female Australian and New Zealand artists Montaigne and BENEE. HANNAH was also one of 40 emerging artists to be selected for the Nando’s Music Exchange in London where they were mentored by Kwame and Nadia Rose.

Listeners will be hearing more from HANNAH in 2020 with a debut EP in the works, produced by fellow Melbourne pop/R&B songwriter Julian Steel. Though it’s only the beginning, ‘Sweet & Sour’ is indication enough of the bright future she has ahead.

Ahead of the LP’s release which will be made available via Cheersquad Records & Tapes, the band are celebrating with a brand new video for their latest lifted single ‘Soldier Field’. A poignant track that ebbs and flows through the outfit’s distinct alt/folk/country tropes with a strong psychedelic footing, ‘Soldier Field’ follows in the wake of Judas’s previous lifted singles ‘New Win’ and ‘Jewels In The Sky’ in a trifecta of easy listening tracks that emphasise the depth of Immigrant Union’s songwriting and seasoned musicianship. The new video out today, features the band’s latest lineup of Brent DeBoer (The Dandy Warhols), Bob Harrow, Peter Lubulwa, Ben Street and Paddy McGrath-Lester at Victoria’s stunning Pink Salt Lake in Dimboola. Presented through a defiant grayscale lens, the minimalist self-directed clip perfectly embodies the track’s soft, melancholic undertones, enveloping DeBoer’s deep rumination in one smooth, slick trip. “The video was shot at Pink Lake, halfway between Melbourne and Adelaide. It was shot by me and Peter (immigrant Union keyboardist) in one sweeping unedited take. We handed the camera off to each other back and forth. We shot on my Sony a6300 on a little stabilisation gimble thing. Other than the price of the camera, the video was shot on a $0 budget. I really like the way it turned out. Pink Lake is such a beautiful location. However, we all forgot sunscreen and paid the price in the most epic way." - Brent DeBoer, Immigrant Union In their decade or so of existence, Immigrant Union have toured extensively both domestically and internationally, playing festivals and club shows across the globe throughout their various member rotations, including an original lineup with Courtney Barnett and co. Having toured with such bands as BRMC, The Lemonheads, Noel Gallagher, Sebadoh and Wolfmother to name a few, the band have built a dedicated fanbase following the success of their acclaimed sophomore album Anyway in 2015. In addition to the release of Judas this June, Immigrant Union will also be putting out a short film, ‘The Battle of Bella’, shot in Joshua Tree, CA and written and directed by acclaimed indie filmmaker, Mike Bruce. An LP visual accompaniment of sorts, the film will star Immigrant Union bandmates Bob and Brent with music from Judas as the soundtrack, so keep an ear to the ground for what is sure to be one for the history books. Where are you currently based and how did you wind up there? I’m currently based in the central highlands of Bali, Indonesia. The waves initially brought me here, I landed a 6 month surf coaching job just as the English winter was about to begin in 2010. It’s been my home base ever since.  How did you first start playing music and singing? My dad taught me guitar at age 11 but a had piano lessons since I was 6. He and my mum were big Beatles fans and he would teach me a lot of their songs. I especially remember learning blackbird in the garden along with my brother - this was my first intro to fingerpicking. I overcame the ‘singing whilst playing conundrum’ pretty quickly somehow, so I was blessed in that sense, I learnt a bunch of songs from tablature from the internet and from my dads books ranging from Black Sabbath to Van Morrison. My first live song performance was at a friends living room and we only played one song, Daytripper! How have you been dealing with the current COVID19 situation? It’s a shocking time and I’m doing my best to stay positive. I’ve been keeping  busy inside recording, I have an album of songs ready to get down and my plan is to release them as singles as I go. I’ve also been getting into some gardening that I’ve been wanting to do for a while but never made the time - it’s nice to do something different and give my ears a break for a day or two. I really like the idea of growing your own food and being self sufficient, plus it feels great to be out in nature. It’s super easy to do in the tropics because everything grows so fast.  You have a new single 'Lucky Kid' out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting for this track? Lucky Kid is a kind of postcard to myself. A reminder of where I’ve come from and what I’ve got to be grateful for. It came to me one day out of nowhere and I wrote the whole thing at the kitchen table in one sitting, which is super rare for me. I always have this nostalgic feeling when I play the song live and I wanted to capture that when it came to recording, which meant performance was key, so there weren’t many takes and it all came together quite quickly.  How did you go about writing Lucky Kid? It was this rare moment where everything happened at once. I was hanging around downstairs with my acoustic guitar drinking tea and thinking of England and how I got to where I was, just playing around with a few chords and all of a sudden the verse melody came to me and I just started writing out what came into my head. How and when did you record/produce Lucky Kid and what programs equipment did you use? I recorded and released Lucky Kid in April 2020. I have a little wooden bungalow next to my house that I use as a studio. It’s helpful to have all my gear and instruments set up so I can just go in when I feel like it. I use an Apogee Duet as my audio interface and Logic X. My go to mic is the Rode NT1a, I also use other condensers and dynamics for different purposes. I started by laying down a scratch guitar and vocal and making sure the tempo is right, then add a live performance of my kick and tambourine and make sure it’s in time. Then once the song is mapped properly I can comfortably go for a real guitar take, then vocals/harmonica and slide guitars and light percussion were added after.  How did you learn how to record/produce? I’ve always been messing around with recording since I was a kid and I used this Tascam 4 track that was my brothers, but never had any formal training. I schooled myself from copious YouTube videos and blogs and just learnt what I needed to know as I went along - a kind of trial and error approach. By no means am I a pro but I know what I want the song to sound like and I’m now proficient in the various parts of the process to get a decent version down.  Please tell us about how you came to send the mix to a guy in Amsterdam that he ran through his Ampex Analogtape machine, how did this come about and how did the process effect the track? I sent the mix of Lucky Kid to a friend and we were discussing tape vs digital sound. We started riffing about sending digital mixes through a tape machine to see what it would sound like. I was curious to do an experiment, so after some googling I found this guy in Amsterdam at Lullabye Studios who had an Ampex Tape Machine from the 60’s. So I flipped him the mix and he put it through in various speeds and saturation and sent back 4 different versions. I could really tell the difference, the guitar and vocal and percussion seemed more present to me. I chose the 15IPS setting with normal saturation, It just sounded more full, thicker and clean. Some of the other variations sounded cool but at 7.5IPS with higher saturation it just sounded too gritty for this acoustic song. It was amazing really to be able to do this process remotely. It doesn’t beat actually recording everything to tape of course, but you can get a little bit of that analog colour on your mix for a small price, and I’m stoked with how it turned out. I’ll definitely be doing this with more of my recordings.  Where, when and how did you master Lucky Kid? So I received the mix after it had gone through the tape machine and I mastered it myself here at home. The process it quite simple really, you are in essence just making the track louder and balanced. I usually just do a bit of EQ, light compression and make sure the loudness meets the optimised standard for streaming platforms like Spotify etc.  What did you find most challenging and rewarding through the process? I normally have a hard time getting my acoustic guitar to sound good, it’s often quite boomy and involves heavy EQ in the mix, but I played around with some unusual microphone placements and found a spot near my strumming elbow that required almost no EQ whatsoever. I think mic placement is super important and it’s something I’ve overlooked previously.  Where can we listen/buy? Go over to Spotify, Apple Music or any music platform to listen to Lucky Kid. Its available to purchase on iTunes and Bandcamp too.  Who are you listening to at the moment? I’ve been listening to the Beatles recordings a lot at the moment, they are just fantastic and always inspire me to get into the studio. Been getting into some Dr Dog, Phil Cook and Hiss Golden Messenger to name a few.  What do you like to do away from music? I really like to travel so I try and go somewhere new each year. I feel like it’s important to go somewhere so I can come back with new ideas and experiences that can weave their way into the music.  Favourite food and place to hangout? My girlfriend and I have been trying out new recipes and there’s lot of yum food coming out of our kitchen right now. And since I decided to be vegetarian 2 years ago it’s opened my eyes to a whole new world of dishes, hence to say I’ve never looked back. So, actually here at home is my favourite place to eat and hang out right now, and it’s the safest! Plus all my dogs are here too, they love that I’m home so much.  www.andysixstring.com @andysixstring instagram  https://www.instagram.com/andysixstring/ @andysixstring_ twitter  https://twitter.com/andysixstring_ Andysixstring Facebook  https://facebook.com/andysixstring/

I’ve also been getting into some gardening that I’ve been wanting to do for a while but never made the time – it’s nice to do something different and give my ears a break for a day or two. I really like the idea of growing your own food and being self sufficient, plus it feels great to be out in nature. It’s super easy to do in the tropics because everything grows so fast.

You have a new single ‘Lucky Kid’ out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting for this track?

I schooled myself from copious YouTube videos and blogs and just learnt what I needed to know as I went along – a kind of trial and error approach.

BAD COP / BAD COP RELEASE NEW SINGLE “PURSUIT OF LIBERTY”

Bad Cop/Bad Cop’s compelling / dynamic / forceful new album, The Ride, comes out on June 19th! Today, we’re thrilled to share the second single, “Pursuit of Liberty,” The melodic, yet powerful track is written by bass player, Linh Le…a blistering repudiation of the current administration’s treatment of immigrants. Read what Linh had to say about the song below:

My family fled Saigon in 1975. They were given a chance. So, why isn’t the same thing still happening for everyone fleeing their danger? How have we gone from “The Land of the Free” to “Build that Wall?”

The song isn’t (just) about my family. I wrote this song to bring awareness to a completely disgraceful treatment of refugees. My family’s part in the song is just my way of showing how personal it is to me. But the message is about ALL REFUGEES

Pre-order The Ride.

In a time of chronic rage, happiness is revolutionary.

Bad Cop / Bad Cop has done angry. The band’s 2017 full-length, Warriors, was recorded in the aftermath of the 2016 presidential election. The Los Angeles quartet’s new full-length, The Ride (Fat Wreck Chords, June 19th), shows what happens when you come out the other side of that anger.

“It’s not that I am just stoked or blind to suffering,” says singer-guitarist Jennie Cotterill. “I think anger is a legitimate and understandable reaction to injustice and wrongdoing. It’s just that for myself, I am trying to move past ‘reaction’ into productive ‘response.’”

The message BCBC is sending this time around is less about wagging your finger at others, or giving the middle one to the Man, than it is about self-love and acceptance. As Cotterill puts it, “Love is a more powerful truth than anger.” That positivity fuels many of The Ride’s tracks: “Originators,” “Simple Girl,” “Community,” “I Choose,” “Perpetual Motion Machine,” and “The Mirage” exude confidence, gratitude, and compassion. In 2020, such things qualify as contrarian.

“These are political statements—self-love is a huge fucking statement,” affirms singer-guitarist Stacey Dee. “Self-love means putting a fix on the problems at home before trying to fix everything in the world. It’s asking people to find it in themselves to create the life that they really want to have so they’re not in turmoil, so they’re not in a place of stress and sickness.”

Dee speaks from experience. In 2018 she was hospitalised twice for different ailments, then discovered she had stage one breast cancer at the end of the year. Fortunately it was highly treatable, but the experience was life-altering. Dee captures it with brutal frankness on “Breastless,” whose bright melodies belie the struggle described in the lyrics.

“Certain Kind of Monster” and “Pursuit of Liberty”—both written and sung by bassist Linh Le—are blistering repudiations of the current administration’s treatment of immigrants.

The former is an imagined conversation with an ICE agent, and the latter juxtaposes her family’s immigration to the U.S. from Vietnam in 1975 to current events, something she’s never explored musically.

The perspective behind The Ride lends it an undeniable maturity, without losing its power. Recorded throughout much of 2018 and 2019 by Johnny Carey and Fat Mike of production team the D-Composers, the album boasts all of the elements of BCBC’s sound: big guitars, lock-step bass and drums (the latter by powerhouse drummer Myra Gallarza), intricate vocal harmonies, and plenty of attitude.

It’s just that this time, the attitude is encouraging, not raging. Nowhere is that more apparent than lilting album closer “Sing With Me.” Built around acoustic guitar, piano, and Cotterill’s voice, it’s an exhortation to “sing with me / or sing your own song / I don’t mind, just as long as you find / a voice.”

Dee adds, “If people are listening to our songs and they’re going to sing along to them, they’re going to start owning some of those words. And in owning some of those words that gives them some strength and power going forward. That’s really the biggest gift that I could give to anybody.”

“Stronger in every way” aptly describes Bad Cop / Bad Cop in 2020. The anger may have taken a back seat on The Ride, but what’s taken its place is even more powerful.
