WIDOWSPEAK Share new single & video ‘Breadwinner’

Past praise for Widowspeak

“Widowspeak fuses lightness and darkness like few others.” – NPR

“Romances, lives, cities, worlds — Widowspeak’s songs contemplate their erosion with a dazed acceptance and music that keeps opening up new spaces.” – New York Times

“Every Widowspeak record is exceptionally intimate.” – AV Club

“Widowspeak take bits and pieces of rock, folk, and country history to make a pop Americana sound that feels antique.” – Pitchfork

“Optimistic-feeling swirl of twangy, textured guitars and dreamy-as-hell vocals” – The FADER

“Rich and atmospheric…speaking to the restlessness of human existence”  – KEXP

“Widowspeak take the best parts of folk and shoegaze and twist them together” – Stereogum

Today, Widowspeak share their poignant new single ‘Breadwinner,’ their first release since Expect the Best (2017), the band’s fourth album. The stop-motion video was made by the duo, singer-songwriter Molly Hamilton and guitarist Robert Earl Thomas, at home in Brooklyn. Watch the video here.

Molly Hamilton on ‘Breadwinner’ – “I have to recognize all that we took for granted when I wrote this song a few years ago, or even when we were recording it last winter. There was the option to imagine a new reality for yourself, the choice to quit and start over, the possibility to support your loved ones. Obviously, there are lyrics within this song that feel so strangely on-the-nose right now (even the part about bread), and perhaps their meaning has changed since everything is different. Now feels like the only time we could possibly let this song into the world, when everyone is trying to figure out life beyond the way we earn a living, and how we’ll earn anything going forward. So, without wanting to capitalize on the heavy realities we’re all facing, we hope it brings some comfort or at least entertainment to people at home.”

This song is about shared burdens in life and love, and hoping that there’s something transcendent, honest in whatever it is to work. Recorded and co-produced with Sam Evian (Cass McCombs, Kazu Makino, Anna Burch) and mixed by Ali Chant (Aldous Harding, Perfume Genius, PJ Harvey), ‘Breadwinner’ was inspired by the cover of a zine by Ian Vens, which sat on display in their home for years. It read, “OH PLEASE BABY JUST QUIT OK IF ANYTHING COMES ALONG PLEASE PROMISE ME YOULL QUIT THAT JOB.” Hamilton felt there was a lot of truth in it, in her own experiences with dead-end work that felt unfulfilling, the economic instability that goes hand-in-hand with choosing to “follow one’s dreams.” The lyrics were also inspired by a growing fascination with bread as allegory; the idea of proving oneself, and reaping the reward of labor.

Where are you currently based? Te Awakairangi (Lower Hutt) in Aotearoa New Zealand  How did you first start playing music? I started recorder lessons when I was about seven, and then guitar a couple of years later.  What's been happening recently? We just released an album over lockdown, and so we've been doing a bunch of 'Personal Party' tiny skype concerts for people over the weekend, playing songs and reading tarot.  Your new album 'Big Woman' is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting for the album? It's a breakup album, so the songwriting was influenced by the drastically shifting social and emotional geography of my life at the time. I knew the songs felt big and I wanted them to sound catastrophic. While we were working on production we were listening to lots of 90's wall-of-sound type stuff, and Jason [Erskine] was trying out lots of Michael Brauer / CLA mix techniques to try and get the size and space we wanted on the tracks.  How did you go about writing the music? All of the songs except 'The News' were written over the last few years. Writing usually comes as a sort of compulsion to me, so I'll be in an almost trance-like state late at night, frantically demo-ing out the ideas flying around my brain. All of the songs that ended up on the album basically came out fully formed with guitars / bass / vocals without much conscious input from me, and the final versions on the album are pretty true to the original scratch demos.  Where and when did you record and who with? It was a DIY affair. We recorded it at our homes, starting with Lauren Ellis tracking the drums in Jason's garage with a bunch of microphones we borrowed off a friend. We then tracked everything else over the next 12 months in between working and parenting. Jason did all of the production - engineering and mixing, and he also ended up mastering the album in the end because we were so scrupulous about how we wanted it to sound. He is so patient and willing to try a hundred things and throw them all out if they don't work. He totally gets the vision.  What programs/instruments did you use? We recorded it using Ableton Live and a bunch of plugins in the mixing process. Jason used a Gretsch 12-string, as well as an acoustic 12-string and a baritone guitar over the drums and bass to build up the density of the album, and there's also some digital piano in there too. We were really constrained on what we could do mainly due to our schedules and lack of money, so Jason spent heaps of time processing tracks in different ways to come up with the sonic landscape we were looking for.  What did you find most challenging and rewarding throughout the creation of the album? The whole process was incredibly grounding. I mean I was going through a really messy separation, I wasn't sleeping, my life was a shambles, but being involved in this creative process alongside Jason was incredibly strengthening and affirming. As the album came together it was like emerging from a fog, we would listen to the rough bounces in the car and it felt like coming back into my body. So even though these songs came out of this really traumatic time, the process of making the album was like an exercise in courage and an affirmation of my own existence.   What do you like to do away from music? Away from music I'm mainly hanging out with my family and dog Tofu and friends and doing prison abolition work, but I also love to write and drink coffee and make clothes and visit small towns. In reality though when I do get free time I'm usually just curled up in bed with Tofu looking at pictures of A-frame houses on my phone and drinking whisky.  Who are you listening to at the moment? I can't get past Baroness' latest album 'Gold & Grey'. It's so perfect. I've also been cranking Mazzy Star and The American Analog Set, and I'm really excited for the upcoming releases from Baby In The 90's who are from Louisiana.  What's planned for 2020? We were meant to be touring a bunch across Aotearoa and Australia, but that's gone a bit awry. We're starting production on the next record, and we really wanna play shows again and hang out! Favourite food and place to hangout? I'm pretty obsessed with the food that Plant Blazed cranks out in Pōneke Wellington. Stupidly delicious southern fried seitan burgers with heaps of slaw and pickles. And my favourite place to hang out is definitely at home in bed under a warm blanket.

Where are you currently based and what is the music scene like there? Emil: Malmö, Sweden. Quite a few good venues here. I especially like Plan B, Babel and Inkonst. Sam: East Dulwich, London. South East London has a very vibrant music scene. From bands like Black Country New Road, Squid, The Golden Dregs, Alaskalaska and artists such as Jerkcurb, Tony Njoku and Pixx. Venue wise it’s pretty limited in comparison to East London but a new venue opened up last year called Peckham Audio which is a lovely addition to the area. Not quite South East London, but the infamous Windmill in Brixton isn’t too far away and is the pinnacle for discovering up and coming artists from the area. Lets just hope these venues survive these tough times because it would be a major blow to not just the venues themselves but to the whole independent music community.  How did you first start playing music? Emil: Standard Swedish compulsory music education! Sam: As a kid, I was obsessed with the sound of distortion so my lovely Mother bought me a guitar! At first I didn’t really take to playing as I found it really difficult and didn’t enjoy lessons. I was about 8 so wanted to be instantly good. However when I was about 13 me and a group of friends decided to start a band and I’ve been playing in different bands ever since.    How has your COVID19 experience been so far? Emil: Terrific, everything slows down- Sam: Other than the UK Government absolutely ballsing up their response to the virus and the fact that 1000’s and 1000’s of people have died because of it, I agree with Emil. It has been a much slower pace but also a little unnerving due to the lack of any plan from the government. I guess I’ll just ’Stay Alert’!   What's been happening recently? Emil: Not much! Sam: I’ve been spending time with my girlfriend, cooking food and making music. It’s been a great time for me to be able to take a step back and just relax.    Please tell us about how the Normal Average People project came about: Emil: We lived in the same flat in Nunhead, South London, we worked at the same bar and ended up playing together in a silly manner. Before we knew it we had a permanent recording set-up in our living room. Simply spending a lot of time in a relaxed environment is how the project came about really. Sam: Yeah the whole project came about in a very natural way. We spent A LOT of time together.    Your second single Baggy Ankles is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting for this track? Emil: All I can say is that the sound was definitely inspired by Bruce Springsteen.  Sam: Hahahaha yes! There is an element of Springsteen in there. You really have to listen out for it though. Other than that I guess we were quite inspired by artists such as Talking Heads, Stereolab, Faust, CAN and Parquet Courts at the time.    Where and when did you record/produce? Emil: We recorded everything live in the bar we worked at at the time. The bar We enjoyed the acoustics and thought it might add to the vibe. During the production process we also worked a lot with re-amping, sending sounds through different speakers and amps to different parts of the bar.  Sam: Yeah it was a really interesting process as the room just really added to everything. It wasn’t your conventional studio set-up at all and I think we thrived off that.    What programs/instruments did you use? Emil: Standard guitar-band setup plus a few synths. And loads of silly stuff! Sam: We even used a microphone in a bucket at one stage to get what we thought was a desired sound. We definitely experimented.    How do you approach recording and production? Emil: Building a stage on which players can act freely, capturing something honest within controlled settings. Creating the format before the substance! Sam: Emil’s great at getting good performances out of people and a pleasure to work with. So yeah I just mostly went a long with his approach.    Who are you listening to at the moment? Emil: Really like the new King Krule album. Sam: Yeah the new King Krule album is great!! I’ve also been listening to a lot of (Sandy) Alex G and Art Feynman recently.     What do you like to do away from music? Emil: I'd like to be a rockstar! Sam: I like sleeping!   What's planned for 2020? Emil: Hopefully the gigging situation will be back to normal before the year ends! Otherwise focus will be on collecting new ideas and then get together either in London or Sweden to record! Sam: Yes ideally gigging would be the next stage but unfortunately we can’t currently. We will be releasing more songs from previous recording sessions throughout the rest of the year and yes get working on the next thing. Got to keep things rolling!    Favourite food and place to hangout? Emil: Anywhere but Voodoo Rays in Peckham! Sam: Hahaha! He only says that cos that’s where I work. Got really into making Tacos recently and hanging out in my girlfriends kitchen where I have a little recording set-up. It’s a nice space with great light so yeah I’d say there. Other than that I’d say Emil’s Mum’s house on the west cost of Sweden. It’s beautiful there, very relaxing and a very creative place.

It will be hosted by Nova’s TIM BLACKWELL, together with radio legend JANE GAZZO – Jane will be hosting from the Australian Music Vault, located within Arts Centre Melbourne. Out front of band Leonardo’s Bride, ABBY DOBSON sung the classic ‘Even When I’m Sleeping’, which won the APRA for ‘Song of the Year’ in 1997. She’s dueted with Neil Finn, Daniel Johns, Alex Lloyd, Mark Seymour, Paul Mac and more, plus written singles for hit TV series such as “The Secret Life Of Us”. Two solo albums in, Abby is soon to release her third album with her delicious side-project, Baby et Lulu, in which she writes and sings in French. From her rural VIC hometown to Melbourne, Sydney and Los Angeles, singer/songwriter D’ARCY SPILLER has a voice that could shuck the most brittle heart. Tender compositions such as current single ‘Deep Black Sea’ (released in line with her triple j Unearthed Feature Artist spot) will appear on her upcoming debut EP, Little Demons, due out on 12 June which was recorded with producers JP Fung (Birds of Tokyo), Chris Collins (Middle Kids) and John Lee (Beaches). With the release of his latest single ‘Good Man’, FERGUS JAMES has delivered a captivating follow-up to his acclaimed 2019 debut EP, All Of The Colours. Handpicked by Ed Sheeran to open his 2018 Australian stadium tour, James also took out triple j’s 2019 Unearthed Splendour in the Grass competition. The multi-faceted young artist is ready to take on the world – first, catch him live on Episode Five this week. With a career spanning 25 years and a rich musical history steeped in jazz, blues and soul, multiple ARIA nominee and APRA winner JADE MACRAE has come full circle in 2020. Having spent the last three years touring the world with US blues great Joe Bonamassa, next month the soulful MacRae will release her new album, titled Handle Me With Care, with current single ‘Midnight Air’ out now. JOE CAMILLERI has been integral to Australian music since 1975 when he fronted Jo Jo Zep And The Falcons, and almost a decade later formed THE BLACK SORROWS who have sold more than two million albums worldwide on the back of bona fide hits such as ‘Hold Onto Me’, ‘Chained To The Wheel’ and ‘Harley & Rose’. Camilleri, who was recently awarded “living legend” status by Rolling Stone, transformed The Black Sorrows from humble beginnings into one of the most sophisticated and successful ensembles in the country averaging over 150 shows in Australia every year and since 2014 have included Europe on their touring schedule. The infectious performances by Sydney brothers and duo LIME CORDIALE have been enthusiastically received in Australia and abroad, the band even scoring an international management deal with Post Malone. In 2019’s triple j Hottest 100, they were the only act to land four songs (‘Robbery’, ‘Inappropriate Behaviour’, ‘Money’ and ‘I Touch Myself’) in the countdown’s Top 40. Lime Cordiale will release their second album 14 Steps To A Better You on 10 July. For Grammy-nominated Sydney trio MANSIONAIR, the sky's the limit. Their stunning debut album, Shadowboxer, has spawned multiple ARIA gold-certified singles in Australia, while the band’s global streaming numbers are at an impressive 250 million and counting. With several ARIA and Billboard charting singles and major tour support slots (CHVRCHES, Florence & The Machine, Carly Rae Jepsen, London Grammar) under their belts, the band’s talents are clearly evident, as heard on most recent single, ‘Easier feat SHAED’ MITCH KING began busking in his hometown of Mt Tamborine at 15. In 2014, he self-released debut A Life Under The Sun, with single ‘Coming Back’ which was adopted by US football team the Green Bay Packers. 2016 EP Southerly Change topped ARIA’s Blues chart, while recent single ‘Burning’ hit 2.5m+ streams. He’s supported Tones and I, America The Band and more, and is currently writing new music with names such as Diesel, the Pierce Brothers and members of The Temper Trap. Listen to his new single, ‘Time Stands Still’, out now. Best known as the frontman of Jet, NIC CESTER is based in Milan, Italy, where he’s carving out a hugely successful solo career off the back of his debut solo album, Sugar Rush. Expect a live album with his incredible band The Milano Elettrica in 2020. He’s also one of the vocalists for The Jaded Hearts Club, a supergroup with members Miles Kane (The Last Shadow Puppets), Matt Bellamy (Muse), Graham Coxon (Blur), Jamie Davis (Transcopic), and Sean Payne (The Zutons). English-born, Sydney raised singer/songwriter ODETTE is quickly accelerating to become one of our most interesting pop newcomers. Her 2019 debut album, To A Stranger, was bold and confident, mixing soul and jazz influences on singles such as ‘Take It To The Heart’ and ‘Feverbreak’. Her intoxicating sound can be heard this week when she makes a special appearance with The Rubens on The State of Music. NSW five-piece THE RUBENS have toured with the likes of P!NK and Bruce Springsteen, won the triple j hottest 100 + multiple awards (including APRAS and a J Award) and smashed radio airplay nationwide with their hit album LO LA RU (2018). The band recently celebrated single ‘Live In Life’ going Platinum (17+ million streams), while current single ‘Heavy Weather’ is on high rotation at triple j. Catch the band when they head out on their biggest headline tour to date, Sept-Dec this year. Melbourne trio SOMETHING FOR KATE will release their long-awaited seventh album in 2020 – incredibly, their first full-length since 2012. It’s led by the excellent new single ‘Situation Room’. Paul Dempsey, Stephanie Ashworth and Clint Hyndman are one of Australia’s best-loved bands, with five albums to date debuting in the Top 5 of the ARIA Album Chart. They join us this week for a special performance filmed in the gorgeous State Drawing Room at Melbourne’s Government House. ABBY DOBSON, D’ARCY SPILLER, FERGUS JAMES, JADE MACRAE, JOE CAMILLERI & THE BLACK SORROWS, LIME CORDIALE, MANSIONAIR, MITCH KING, NIC CESTER & THE MILANO ELETTRICA, ODETTE, and SOMETHING FOR KATE, the band playing inside the State Drawing Room at Melbourne’s Government House.

For Grammy-nominated Sydney trio MANSIONAIR, the sky’s the limit. Their stunning debut album, Shadowboxer, has spawned multiple ARIA gold-certified singles in Australia, while the band’s global streaming numbers are at an impressive 250 million and counting. With several ARIA and Billboard charting singles and major tour support slots (CHVRCHES, Florence & The Machine, Carly Rae Jepsen, London Grammar) under their belts, the band’s talents are clearly evident, as heard on most recent single, ‘Easier feat SHAED’

MITCH KING began busking in his hometown of Mt Tamborine at 15.

The State Of Music is a weekly livestream created by Mushroom Group in partnership with the Victorian Government’s Victoria Together initiative.

ALICE IVY SHARES NEW SINGLE ‘BETTER MAN’ FEATURING BENJAMIN JOSEPH OF SAFIA + VIDEO STARRING ALEX DYSON DON’T SLEEP LP OUT JULY 17 + TRACKLIST REVEALED INCLUDING THELMA PLUM, ODETTE, MONTAIGNE AND MORE

PRAISE FOR ALICE IVY

“She brings those fleeting summer vibes to life beautifully.”
Gorilla Vs Bear

“Alice Ivy knows how to get the best out of her collaborators”
triple j

“Easily one of the most talented in the game, layering samples, melodies and guest collaborators to give this woozy, Avalanches-comparable sound.”
Pilerats

Today Alice Ivy shares new single ‘Better Man (feat. Benjamin Joseph)‘ of SAFIA. The track follows the announcement of Ivy’s forthcoming second studio album and release of its title track, ‘Don’t Sleep‘. Listen and watch the groove-heavy music video featuring former triple j host Alex Dyson, HERE.

Neighbours in Melbourne’s inner-north, Alice Ivy and Alex Dyson once regularly attended Zumba classes together. Recently Dyson took to hosting his own ‘ZOOMba‘ class in lockdown, obliging Ivy with a dedicated performance for this new single. Directed by May Tusler (also behind the dirt bikes from ‘Don’t Sleep‘) and filmed in one morning at North Melbourne’s historic Lithuanian Club, Dyson unleashes the ultimate freeform solo. Neither choreographed or rehearsed in advance, the result is a dynamic dance complete with a broom for a partner, a costume change, and Dyson’s trademark jazz hand strut that could rival those in Fatboy Slim’s ‘Weapon Of Choice’.

As a fan and peer, what sets ‘Better Man‘ apart on Don’t Sleep for Ivy is its collaboration with Benjamin Joseph. She shares: “Ben is an incredible writer, multi-instrumentalist and producer. He can literally play anything so we were moving around the room picking up as many different instruments as we could and putting them on the track. Ben’s writing style is different to mine, we focused A LOT on the groove and feel of the instrumental before even touching the vocals, I kind of like to focus on getting the song as vibey as possible including the vocals from the get-go. When we were writing the hook we were listening to references and we got onto “The Bee Gees” and Ben goes ‘I haven’t pushed my falsetto that high before’, so we gave it a crack and it stuck!”

The follow-up to I’m Dreaming, her 2018 AMP-nominated debut LP, Don’t Sleep also features the previously released singles, ‘Sunrise (feat. Cadence Weapon)’ and ‘In My Mind (feat. Ecca Vandal)’. Like her contemporaries Mark Ronson and KAYTRANADA, Alice Ivy sits at the intersection of producer and tastemaker. A revered collaborator, she’s equally adept at uncovering new dimensions to those who you thought were well established, household names as she is seeking out and helping to break new ones. For the musician however, platforming new artists and helping new voices to break-through to the mainstream goes beyond just tastemaking.

Between releases, Alice has grown into one of Australian electronica’s most prominent advocates for female producers, putting her in step with other tireless voices such as KUČKA and Grimes. Through her choice of collaborators, many of whom are female and non-binary, Alice Ivy is working to diversify the sound and look of the traditionally male-dominated studio space – a cause moves forward again throughout her second LP. Across Don’t Sleep, her refined curatorial skills are on full display, as Thelma Plum, Montaigne, Ecca Vandal, Ngaiire, Benjamin Joseph of SAFIA, Odette, Bertie Blackman, Imbi and many more come together within Alice Ivy’s creative orbit. Read below for the album’s complete tracklist.

Magdalena – The artist behind Ibiza’s ‘SHADOWS’ event series, releases remix of Brlee’s ‘Visions’ | Watch The Music Video Now

BRLEE – ‘VISIONS’ (MAGDALENA REMIX)
OVERLOAD RECORDS
OUT NOW

Released today, Hamburg electronic artist and the figure-head behind one of Ibiza’s widely popular event series, Magdalena, unveils her new remix of Brlee’s ‘Visions’.

Arguably one of the Slovenian artist’s most renowned tracks, ‘Visions’ was originally released in 2016 as part of the ‘Visions / Reality’ EP project. Amassing support from both key industry figures and artists alike, ‘Visions’ is also the title track from Brlee’s anticipated upcoming album – set for release in June.

Much like many industry peers, the original track has regularly found its way into Magdalena’s sets time and time again. After a short exchange between both artists, Magdalena’s own take on ‘Visions’ was put into motion, transforming the track into a hypnotic remix, more than fitting for dimly-lit clubs, festival stages and dusky-Ibizan sunsets.

With releases spanning a host of esteemed labels from Anjunadeep, Diynamic, Knee Deep In Sound and many more, Magdalena continues to re-affirm herself as one of the underground’s most innovative names. From working alongside Solomun and Adriano Trolio to open the Hamburg venue ‘EGO’, to inviting industry heavy-weights Miss Kittin, Anja Schneider, Nicole Moudaber just to name a few, to her ‘SHADOWS’ event series at Ibiza’s Cova Santa, Magdalena will continue her unstoppable trajectory across the new decade, starting with today’s release of the ‘Visions’ remix.

JESS CORNELIUS Announces debut album Distance Out July 24 via Part Time Records Shares new single & video 'Kitchen Floor'

JESS CORNELIUS Announces debut album Distance Out July 24 via Part Time Records Shares new single & video ‘Kitchen Floor’

by the partae May 27, 2020
written by the partae

Jess Cornelius announces her debut album, Distance, out July 24th on Part Time Records / Remote Control, and presents a new single/video, ‘Kitchen Floor.’ Cornelius first began writing the songs that would comprise Distance after moving from Melbourne, Australia to Los Angeles. At the time, she was excited to start fresh after several years as the primary songwriter in the band Teeth and Tongue. But the distance she addresses over the album is hardly a geographical one. Instead, Distance finds a deft songwriter analyzing the space between society’s expectations for her and her own dreams, the illusion of love and the reality of disappointment, and a past she is ready to let go of and a future she could have hardly imagined.

Distance documents a songwriter in the pursuit of living life on her own terms. As Cornelius puts it, “A lot of the record was about me deciding to continue this nomadic lifestyle of being a musician. People would ask me if I was going to have a family and a lot of the songs are about me being ok with not pursuing that path. It was about coming to terms with the choices I had made. . . And then two years later, I’m knocked up and married! I couldn’t have imagined that.”

With the help of producer Tony Buchen, Distance became a roving affair, recorded in a string of Los Angeles studios with delicate and emphatic contributions from the local music scene, including Stella Mozgawa (Warpaint), harpist Mary Lattimore, Emily Elhaj (Angel Olsen), Stephanie Drootin (Bright Eyes), Jesse Quebbeman-Turley (Hand Habits), whistler Molly Lewis, Justin Sullivan (Night Shop, Kevin Morby) and Laura Jean Anderson.

While the sonic tones and textures on the album evoke certain classic staples of Americana, soul and rock and roll, Cornelius’ lyrics anchor the songs to a deeply personal place. She sings of a miscarriage, a messy romantic affair, and the frustrations that come with having a partner. As she says, “I am a fan of classic songwriting but I would hope that the lyrics are not of any time historically but rather this time of my life as a woman.”

Cornelius gave a first taste of Distance with ‘No Difference,’ released last year. On new single ‘Kitchen Floor,’ Cornelius maps the space between the bedroom and the front door over a Roy Orbison tinged rave-up, lamenting the coming pain: “This is gonna be a hard one.” Its accompanying video, the first in a series in which she plays a familiar female character trope, was filmed by Cornelius and her partner on an iPhone at 5am in Los Angeles so they wouldn’t encounter any people. “I have a weird fascination with Hollywood Blvd — it’s such a grotesque place most of the time,” says Cornelius. “But I knew we’d have the chance to experience it deserted and empty, and it was like a different place. I’d been watching a lot of  ‘last human on earth’ apocalypse-type films. Mostly, the concept behind the clip was to have this character just owning it. There are so many things pregnant women are not ‘supposed’ be doing, like having casual sex with strangers. There’s a loneliness, too, that I wanted to get across in the clip, but ultimately she’s in a state of friendliness with herself and the world.”

written by the partae

From Thursday June 11, visitors can enjoy performances of
various DJs and live acts on the big screen every week

Audio Obscura is back with something very special: a brand-new sunset stream series in collaboration with The Netherland’s main cinema chain Pathé. The ‘Revere Series’ of Audio Obscura will not only be seen online, but also on the big screen in The Netherlands! Music lovers can finally enjoy performances of their favorite artists together again.

This unique experience will start in Pathé on Thursday June 11 and a brand new stream will premiere in theaters every Thursday. The streams will first be shown exclusively for a week in various cinemas across The Netherlands, and will then go online on Audio Obscura’s channels. Everything entirely in accordance with the guidelines of the Dutch Institute for Health and Environment (RIVM), as 30 people per viewing may take place at a distance of 1.5 meters. Visitors are free to dance a little in their own seats.

Doron Kurz, Commercial Director Pathé: “ We are always looking for unique content for our cinemas. With Audio Obscura, music lovers can enjoy performances of their favorite DJs on the big screen in a safe setting exclusively at Pathé. We hope to appeal to visitors who are currently unable to attend a festival or party. This way we are able to offer them a unique experience of their favorite artists.”

Audio Obscura: “Once we heard from June 1st onwards cinemas were able to open up again, the idea came up to show our streams in cinemas. As soon as we were in touch with Pathé they fortunately loved the idea. Teaming up with a common goal created a perfect environment to set this up together. We are happy to create an opportunity for fans to come together again and watch our cutting-edge music streams on a big screen with proper sound.”

Together with Audio Obscura’s partner Nomobo, the streams are recorded at iconic and historic locations throughout The Netherlands and will showcase the beauty of the country. Various artists will perform at Forteiland Pampus, de Euromast and the Scheepvaartmuseum. The first stream will be done by none other than Joris Voorn at UNESCO world heritage location: Kinderdijk. Later on, Eelke Kleijn, Job Jobse, KI/KI, Carista, Detroit Swindle, Patrice Bäumel and indie band MY BABY will give a sensational performance. New locations and artists will be revealed during the summer.

In line with Audio Obscura’s previous live stream series this year, viewers can donate to charities. This time the charities vary from healthcare to initiatives for the music industry.

This new and exceptional way of experiencing music offers the visitors, who now have to miss their beloved festivals and clubs, an unforgettable experience. Tickets are available via pathe.nl/audio-obscura for €12,50.

NEW HOODOO GURUS VINYL 7" SINGLE & MACH SCHAU DELUXE DIGITAL EDITION!

NEW HOODOO GURUS VINYL 7″ SINGLE & MACH SCHAU DELUXE DIGITAL EDITION!

by the partae May 27, 2020
written by the partae

The Hoodoo Gurus will release their latest single – “Answered Prayers” – as a VERY limited edition 7″ on June 12.  At the same time they will digitally release an expanded Deluxe Edition of their 2004 album Mach Schau, which will combine the track listings from both the local and US editions in a new 16 track running order.

“Answered Prayers”, which the Gurus performed live in front of a huge national audience on last Friday night’s episode of  The State Of Music  and which is already available digitally, is the first new music from the band in 10 years, not counting 2014’s Gravy Train, a newly-recorded EP of lost tracks from the band’s early days. It is the first recording to feature “new” drummer Nik Rieth, who joined in 2015, following time served with The Celibate Rifles, New Christs and Tumbleweed, as well as Radio Birdman, with whom he still plays.

“Answered Prayers” is a stark and visceral track addressing a certain type of abuse propagated by a particular type of male. It’s also a reminder of the Gurus’ raw power and their roots in the original punk rock of the ’70s. Indeed the track follows the release of both old and new material by The Victims, the band that head Guru Dave Faulkner formed with drummer James Baker in Perth in 1977, some four or so years before the pair reunited in Sydney to form the Gurus.

“Song of the Year”, which will feature on the single’s B-side, further emphasises the band’s punk roots. Written and sung by guitarist Brad Shepherd, the flat-out screamer of a song obliquely references in its chorus two of Brisbane’s legendary punk-era bands, The Fucken Leftovers and The Survivors. Brad, of course, fronted his own groups as a teenager in Brisbane at the time, beginning with The Aliens, who evolved into the legendary Fun Things.

Oh, and did we mention the band that Gurus bassman Rick Grossman and former Gurus drummer Mark Kingsmill attempted to get off the ground with Radio Birdman’s Deniz Tek, before Radio Birdman started? Talk about punk rock roots…

“ANSWERED PRAYERS”/”SONG OF THE YEAR” Limited Edition 7″ vinyl release
PRE-ORDER LINK TO SHARE:
 https://HoodooGurus.lnk.to/AP7

“Song of the Year” will also appear on the digital Deluxe Edition of Mach Schau. Left off the original Australian release in 2004, it was one of a handful of tracks added to the US edition of the album at the expense of a couple from the local edition. The new digital release will include all tracks from both editions – plus a couple of tracks, “This Is Your Time” and “Keep It Alive”, that were B-sides on a CD single – in a new, improved running order. None of these extra tracks have ever been available for streaming anywhere in the world, and many were previously unreleased in Australia.

Mach Schau was the first album the Gurus recorded after their five-year hiatus starting in 1998 and is one of their very best. Co-produced by another veteran of Perth’s feisty late-‘70s punk scene Kim Salmon, it features cracking tunes like “Sour Grapes”, “Girls On Top”, “Domino”, “When You Get to California” (with guest Vicki Peterson of The Bangles) and the great single “Nothing’s Changing My Life”, which surprisingly featured the decidedly non-punk – but classic ’70s – pair of Venetta Fields and Renee Geyer on backing vocals.

Mach Schau Deluxe Edition track listing:
1. “Sour Grapes”
2. “Domino”
3. “Nothing’s Changing My Life”
4. “The Good Son”
5. “When You Get to California”
6. “This One’s for the Ladies”
7. “Girls on Top”
8. “Dead Sea”
9. “Monkey’s Wedding”
10. “#17”
11. “Isolation”
12. “White Night”
13. “Song of the Year”
14. “The Mighty Have Fallen”
15. “Chop”
16. “Penelope’s Lullaby”

HOODOO GURUS’ “ANSWERED PRAYERS”/”SONG OF THE YEAR” Limited Edition 7″ vinyl release and MACH SCHAU DELUXE EDITION digital release are both out

With the help of his friends around the globe, Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs offers 'I Can Hear the Birds', a four track ambient EP written and recorded during the first weeks of isolation. The EP features and was inspired by the sounds of birds heard singing louder than ever during the silence of the lockdowns. What began as a series of musical greeting cards from Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs to isolated friends has evolved into a unique project that explores the intersection of human connection and the planet's regeneration, out now on I OH YOU / Liberator Music. In the words of Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs, known as Orlando Higginbottom to some…. On 22nd March a friend sent me a recording of the birds that were keeping her awake in the Canary Islands. It was early in this story and anxiety was high, so I took the recording and made some music to it as a present to send back, a hug, and an exercise to take my mind off the obvious. The next day I spoke to a friend in South London who like many of us was commenting on the volume of the birdsong in his garden, so I asked for a recording of that too, and he woke at dawn the next day and sent me blackbirds, house sparrows, and a great tit. I sent him music a day or two later. Working on my existing musical projects was proving difficult and so this pattern of receiving bird recordings from friends and sending them back songs emerged as a welcome practice.  On 15th April my friend Jon Wright of Sports Banger, aware of my project, showed me a drawing a kid had done on the letter Boris Johnson had sent out to every UK household. On it were colourful birds and “bum face boris bollocks”. Also the words “I can hear the birds again”. So I took that as a sign that I should finish this music, and release it as an EP called “I can hear the birds”.  The artwork is a painting by Jethro Buck, my pal who got up early in Brockley and recorded for me. We’ve known each other since we were 5. I’ve always hoped we’d get an opportunity to collide our worlds one day. I did 8 tracks in total, from Delhi, Nairobi, New York.. there are 4 on this EP, because 4 feels like the right amount.  Thanks to the people who sent me recordings, you know who you are xxxx Relieved of the uncertainty revolving around his current projects Orlando set out to stitch, arrange, and stretch each recording in its own unique way. At times the originally captured frequencies shape the final song and in other cases they are allowed to lose their form completely. The result is a fifteen minute confluence of organic tones and space aged synth work, an aural hug for his friends and fans on the earth slowed down.   Raised on classical music and interested in sampling field recordings early in his career, the value of noise and notes has become near equal to Orlando. Self recordings of train stations and airports can be uncovered as the landing pads for many of his productions, inspired by music concrete pioneers like Luc Ferrari and Daphne Oram through to the more tonal world of Eno's "Thursday Afternoon".   Whether the birds have reclaimed their song or the static of human life has subsided just enough to pay attention, 'I Can Hear The Birds' offers a moment to appreciate the chorus of the natural world that was and will be.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?list=PLuRPOhcmsEFzhOWRMkuKxAYX1yRhNVbZ0&time_continue=1&v=7BPfDYtX9hU&feature=emb_title Facebook | Twitter | Instagram

With the help of his friends around the globe, Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs offers ‘I Can Hear the Birds’, a four track ambient EP written and recorded during the first weeks of isolation. The EP features and was inspired by the sounds of birds heard singing louder than ever during the silence of the lockdowns. What began as a series of musical greeting cards from Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs to isolated friends has evolved into a unique project that explores the intersection of human connection and the planet’s regeneration, out now on I OH YOU / Liberator Music.

Thanks to the people who sent me recordings, you know who you are xxxx
Relieved of the uncertainty revolving around his current projects Orlando set out to stitch, arrange, and stretch each recording in its own unique way.
Self recordings of train stations and airports can be uncovered as the landing pads for many of his productions, inspired by music concrete pioneers like Luc Ferrari and Daphne Oram through to the more tonal world of Eno’s “Thursday Afternoon”.
Whether the birds have reclaimed their song or the static of human life has subsided just enough to pay attention, ‘I Can Hear The Birds’ offers a moment to appreciate the chorus of the natural world that was and will be.

UKIYO ANNOUNCES NEW SINGLE AND VIDEO ‘GOOD ENOUGH’ FEAT. MARIBELLE

by the partae May 27, 2020
written by the partae

Thrilling multi-instrumentalist and producer, Perth’s Ukiyo returns today with his entrancing new single Good Enough featuring Maribelle – a modest change of pace from the lofi electronic records of his Mixtape series, Ukiyo has produced a sensational blend of ambient indie-tronica and synth-driven future pop.  The track is perfectly complemented by a hypnotic video that will take the viewer on a mesmerising journey into a ravaged world, where the video seeks to compare a doomed relationship within the lyrics of the song to the state of the earth – exploring the daunting idea of humans doing the bare minimum to get by – taking on the ‘good enough’ attitude.

Inspired by artists like Mac Miller, Porter Robinson and Bonobo, Good Enough is a synth-laden masterpiece with a bouncing melody, and offers an uplifting take on a relationship that is going nowhere. Maribelle croons in that lively, soulful vocal she’s best known for – “Falling out of love.  If we give it up, give it up.  At least we know that this was good enough.”

Offering insight into the song, Ukiyo says,“For me, Good Enough is all about being happy with what you have. I’m a person that struggles to keep my mind away from thinking about what ‘could’ve’ or ‘should’ve’ instead of focusing on reality. This track came about at a time that was very much a turning point for me with how I chose to view the world. I think it’s an important message for people to hear, especially in a time like now.”

Working with production company Blacklake who have made clips for OTR, Shallou, Martin Garrix and more, Ukiyo explains how the video for Good Enough came about, saying, “Some of the most common things I hear about my music is it’s a great soundtrack for travelling & adventuring.  I guess that makes a lot of sense with all the vlogs and videos I’ve seen it combined with.  At its core I think those two things represent movement & escape, which is what this video and the ones that come after represent.  It’s pretty difficult to make a conventional music video in the current times, but the situation has opened my eyes to things I might not have usually tried.  I had some basic concepts I knew I wanted to explore in the videos which I took to Blacklake and they made them a hundred times cooler.”

This is a 23 year old with a clear vision for his art, and an impressive host of accolades to hang his hat on.  Will Smith and Casey Neistat borrow his songs for vlogs, US pop star Pharrell Williams and Dutch DJ Martin Garrix added him to their playlists – it’s promotion that money can’t buy and thanks to some big name fans, Perth’s own Timothy Arnott has amassed near on 30 million streams, and landed syncs with big brands like American Eagle, Ripcurl, Microsoft, Volkswagon, HBO and Netflix for the relatively small handful of electronic songs he’s released under his Ukiyo moniker.

And with his LP completed and set for release later this year, Ukiyo drops some exciting info on exactly why we should be prepping ourselves for a killer debut album, enthusing, “I’m absolutely in love with the Australian music scene, so in the unique position I’m in as a producer, I knew I wanted my album to be a showcase of some of the incredible talent we’ve got here.  These singles and the album are as Australian as it gets with production (obviously), and all features, mixing, mastering and artwork all done by Aussies.”

Ukiyo’s decision to release his tunes despite Covid-19 wreaking havoc on the global music industry was a no brainer, explaining, “There were talks within my team about delaying this music because of the virus and I’ve seen so much of that happening, but I think it’s times like these where we need music to help us through. All the tracks on this album were made at times when I was by myself. I find it’s the only way I can make what I perceive as a ‘Ukiyo’ song, so I think it’s a little poetic that a lot of people are going to be stuck listening to it by themselves too.”

Ukiyo is Tim Arnott.

Good Enough is released today on Pack Records.

Today, Australia's notorious pub-punk kingpins Private Function have announced a new label deal with Damaged for the band's impending 2020 LP release, with marketing and distribution handled by Caroline Australia. The deal, which sees the recently arrived label snag the hot-property band, marks as the debut signing from Damaged, which was founded by Australia's ARIA-nominated punk outfit Clowns in 2019. According to label director and Clowns frontman Stevie Williams, signing Private Function to the Damaged / Caroline roster was a no brainer.  "We started Damaged to shine a light on our favourite bands that we had discovered through years of touring and working on Clowns. In our years we've never come across a more entertaining, infectious and magnetic band than Private Function," Stevie says.  "Whether you're listening to their records or catching them live, you simply can't turn your attention off from this irreverent, hilarious, crackerjack punk-rock act. Further expanding our label facilities to Private Function's new LP is not just exciting but feels oh so right. PF STILL ON TOP!" Private Function's guitarist Joe Hansen agreed it was important for the band to align with a label who always had the band's best interests in mind.  "We decided it was a good idea to sign with a label like Damaged so we could have a good middleman between us and the inevitable legal issues and public outcry" New music from Private Function will be released via Damaged in the coming months. JOYCE MANOR TO RELEASE SONGS FROM NORTHERN TORRANCE MAY 29

SONGS FROM NORTHERN TORRANCE

SHARE “HOUSE WARNING PARTY”

Acclaimed California-based four-piece Joyce Manor have announced Songs From Northern Torrance. The 10-track compilation is a collection of early material that offers a glimpse into the band’s humble beginnings as an acoustic two-piece. Originally recorded between 2008-2010, many of the tracks have become fan favorites over the years previously existing in a live setting, or on rare CD-Rs sold by the band during their early days on the road.

The newly remastered tracks will be available on streaming services this Friday, May 29 and on vinyl September 18. The vinyl is currently available for pre-order here.

STREAM / PRE-ORDER SONGS FROM NORTH TORRANCE

Today, the band shares “House Warning Party,” a one-minute blast of upbeat suburban angst.  “A lot of early Joyce Manor songs are actually leftovers from earlier bands, but ‘House Warning Party‘ was the first song I wrote specifically for Joyce Manor,” explains vocalist Barry Johnson. “I was working at the Long Beach Aquarium and the first line of the song came to me while I was perusing the vending machine on my break. They had some LifeSavers and on the packaging it said ‘five flavors’ and the opening line of the song just popped in my head. The rest of the lyrics came effortlessly and the song was fully written in about the time it takes to listen to. Listening to it ten years later it sounds young and inspired and I’m impressed at how much of a story I was able to tell in just over a minute.”

TATYANA Announces debut EP Shadow On The Wall Shares title track & video

TATYANA Announces debut EP Shadow On The Wall Shares title track & video

by the partae May 27, 2020
written by the partae
Praise for TATYANA

“a lushly produced pop single” – The FADER

“Tatyana and her harp have always been a package deal and for good reason—together, they are magical.” – Office Magazine

“weightless pop vocals underpinned by her harp and lush, soupy synths.” – Crack Magazine

“a celestial combination of Lorde and Christine and the Queens” – tmrw Magazine

“between Kate Bush, Bjork, and Tears For Fears … there’s also something vividly original at work.” – CLASH

“crafts a shimmering blend of pared-down beats, swirling, ethereal pop and wistful poeticism that makes for a truly transcendental listen.” – London In Stereo

Emerging U.K.-based singer, producer and harpist TATYANA has today shared her bewitching new track ‘Shadow On The Wall’ on Sinderlyn – sister label to Captured Tracks. TATYANA has also detailed her debut EP – also Shadow On The Wall – for release on  July 17. Preorder/presave HERE.

Born to English and Russian parents, TATYANA debuted with the stunning ‘Wild Card’ in March and has gone on to draw acclaim everywhere from The FADER and CLASH to Crack Magazine and NYLON – who premiered TATYANA’s self-directed ‘Shadow On The Wall’ lyric video today. TATYANA recently performed a virtual show for Baby’s All Right live on Baby TV and for Dork’s Homeschool – which received over 200,000 unique visitors over the weekend of 8-10 May.

Speaking about new track ‘Shadow On The Wall’, TATYANA added “‘Shadow On The Wall’ is a digital love letter. With this song and lyric video I wanted to explore sincerity in the age of internet romance. It’s everything I can’t say in a text or a message.”

In 2018, classically-trained harp player TATYANA walked into an underground rave in London. Thrilled by the sense of community that drove the party, she made it a goal to play her own music in this kind of environment some day. No surprise, that’s exactly what she did the following year. It’s not the kind of show one might expect an artist with her background to play, but this is how things happen in TATYANA’s world – her moves seem surprising until you realize they’ve made perfect sense all along.

TATYANA lived in Holland, Russia, Singapore, and Boston – where she attended Berklee College of Music on a full scholarship – before settling back in her hometown of London in 2017; the transient nature of her upbringing has certainly informed her music. From underground raves to viral YouTube covers to playing harp on tour with Neneh Cherry, there seems to be no scene that she doesn’t thrive in. Her new music is a multi-faceted product of all of that experience, the kind of precisely produced, impossibly catchy pop that takes other artists entire careers to nail.

It makes sense, considering all of this, that when asked to describe her music, TATYANA picks a color instead of a sound. She chooses the color blue, for the sense of peaceful melancholy that underpins even her most upbeat tracks. It’s not quite sad or happy; like everything with TATYANA, it’s content to sit somewhere in between.
