Amsterdam, January 22nd, Awakenings Festival, the world’s largest outdoor techno festival, has just announced the line up of its 20 year anniversary. The iconic festival will return to the festival grounds in Spaarnwoude on June 27 and 28 for two full days of techno. Starting as an underground community, Awakenings has established itself over the last two decades as one of the leading brands in the techno industry. With over 100 artists performing in eight different areas at the biggest outdoor techno festival in the world, Awakenings Festival will once again showcase a broad spectrum of techno artists, from the pioneers of techno and international headliners to new and upcoming talent. Similar to last years’ sold out editions, Awakenings Festival will welcome an international crowd of 80.000 visitors.  The festival’s all-star line up includes pioneers like Derrick May, Jeff Mills, Kevin Saunderson, Robert Hood, Richie Hawtin & Carl Cox. Charlotte de Witte, Amelie Lens, Reinier Zonneveld and Dax J will also return to Spaarnwoude to play on both days. On top of that, Maceo Plex will host his Mosaic area for the third year in a row and Joris Voorn will return to the festival grounds with ‘Joris Voorn & Friends’.  Awakenings will as always offer a platform to a new generation of artists. This year, upcoming names like VTSS, ONYVAA, Park Hye Jin, SAMA', Chris Stussy and Kevin de Vries have been added to the line up. Other widely respected names that have been announced for the anniversary edition include Adam Beyer, Joseph, Len Faki, Sam Paganini and Tale Of Us.  In addition to the jaw-dropping line up, Awakenings Festival’s anniversary year will once again feature innovative and groundbreaking stage designs and next level production during this massive weekend. Today at 18:00 o’clock, Reinier Zonneveld played a unique role in unveiling the full 2020 line up, performing a live set from a boat on the Amsterdam canals, broadcasted on Awakenings’ Facebook and YouTube page.  Prior to Awakenings Festival, the festival organisation will host three nights and one full day of techno during Awakenings Easter in the Gashouder, a perfect way to get in the mood for the 20 year anniversary with over 60 hours of techno in one weekend.    For the full line up, tickets and more information, visit www.awakenings.com/festival Awakenings Festival 2020 Date: Saturday 27th & Sunday 28th of June Time: 12:00 - 23:00 CEST Location: Spaarnwoude (near Amsterdam)

On Thursday January 23rd we’re welcoming The Soul Movers live (with Cherry fav’s Russia on support duty) to the Cherry stage! The group feature’s everyone’s favourite ex-Wiggle and ARIA Hall of Famer Murray Cook, along with soul singer Lizzie Mack on lead vocals, bass player Andy Newman (The Visitors), Marko Simec (Waiting For Guiness) on keys, and drummer Stuart Wilson (Loose Pills).

With a swag of fantastic music videos (our old digs down AC/DC Lane the location for “Shake It Loose” so maybe you were in the crowd?!) along with recordings having taken place at historic studios across North America, this band is keeping that fun and inhabited golden age of soul alive!

So despite the rumours, it’s not all techno in Melbourne. Every Thursday for Soul in the Attic our resident DJ’s spin all things soul, funk, disco and classic 45’s ’til late! Cherry is open at our new location of 68 Little Collins Street. It’s probably the best rock n roll joint in town again.

This coming long weekend, Rack Jones are bringing their alternative indie bangers and anthemic upbeat ballads to the cherry stage!

Hot on the hills of their debut album “A Night You Won’t Recall” Rack Jones are quickly becoming one of Australia’s most exciting young rock bands. A four piece, made up of Jack Rouse (Guitar & Vocals), Patrick Fitton (Guitar & Vocals), Sam Kay (Bass), Jesse Cribbes (Drums) – their electric live show is a show you don’t want to miss!

Cherry is now located at 68 Little Collins Street (400 odd metre walk from our ol’ digs down AC/DC Lane). It’s probably the best rocknroll bar in town again.

Giving our new PA a workout, Hannah Kate is appearing live on Friday Jan’ 24th on the Cherry stage!

Hannah Kate is a garage rock outfit from Melbourne who over the past two years have earned themselves a reputation for their raucous live shows and their intelligent brand of rock and roll.

Now though this show is technically the Saturday morning, think of it like you’re still out from the night before…

The new Cherry is located at 68 Little Collins Street. It might be the best rock n roll joint in town…

Three Kings performing two (more?) sets at Cherry!
Our weekly Cherry Blues is FREE ENTRY with doors from 5PM
Espresso Martinis for $10 all afternoon too!

This Sunday January 26th we’re welcoming Melbourne blues super group Three Kings to the Cherry stage! This authentic blues trio with the renowned Ian Collard (Collard Greens and Gravy), Benny Peters (Benny and the Fly By Niters) and Jason Liu Soon (stints with Chris Wilson and The Detonators) take audiences on a tour of those greasy, picturesque juke joints prominent within the rich history of American blues and roots music. With a hard hittin’ delivery and a wide range of influences (think John Lee Hooker, Kid Thomas, Slim Harpo and Jerry McCain to name but a few), Three Kings take punters a reckless hell ride and clock up the miles from Bourbon Street to the Windy City…

“No one should have to follow these guys on stage. No one.” – Justin Townes Earle

Our weekly Cherry Blues is still FREE ENTRY with doors now from 5PM. Table seating is available with a new snacks menu and wine list. And supervised children are welcome to attend. If you haven’t checked out the new Cherry as yet? We’re now located at 68 Little Collins Street!

COSMIC KAHUNA live on the Cherry stage!
Cherry will be open ’til 5AM x

To help make use of this upcoming long weekend, we’ve invited Cosmic Kahuna to perform live on the Cherry stage!

This guitar driven trio always puts on a wild show, and sure do know how to test amps! Cosmic Kahuna are the kind of band that have simply made fans the old fashioned way, great recordings and a live show that offers a colourful assault that’s built around diverse riffs. Whether taking a listener down to the skate parks of yesteryear or chewin’ up a cassette tape stoner rock comp’ on some lsd laced muscle car hoon through the desert, this lot will make fans of any lovers rock. Like Dave Grohl, who invited them to the land of stars and stripes and perform at the Cal’ Jam Festival he curated.

Make the most of this public holiday eve! We’ll be open ’til 5AM. And if you haven’t checked out the new Cherry yet, we’re located at 68 Little Collins Street. It’s probably the best rocknroll joint in town again.

Celebration of David Bowie
Sunday 26th January, 11pm

Celebrate the magic of David Bowie at Cherry
It’s FREE ENTRY with Bowie shirt or face paint…
$10 Espresso Martinis ALL NIGHT too!

Hey. If you’re looking for a place to boogie on the long weekend we’re celebrating David Bowie on Sunday Jan’ 26th to make the most of the public holiday! A true chameleon of popular culture, leaving behind masterworks that will forever stand the test of time.

When struggling pop singer David Jones created the stage name David Bowie, it was the birth for what was to be an outlet for one of the most creative minds in rock ’n’ roll history. His ability to reinvent himself and create a tapestry of iconography within the constraints of popular music is unparalleled. Taking the experience of music beyond your hi-fi speakers, Bowie was a creative force that would pull you into his various guises and concepts.

Cherry DJ’s will be spinnin’ the best from Bowie across both levels, covering all periods (Major Tom, Ziggy Stardust, Aladdin Sane, Thin White Duke, his return to pop in the ’80’s, late 90’s alt-rock leanings and self penned requiem that was Blackstar), so everyone can have a boogie! We’ll be slingin’ $10 Espresso Martinis and partying ’til 5AM!

It all starts from 11PM and it’s FREE ENTRY for those sporting their Bowie shirt or face paint or it’s an easy $10 entry. And hey, not every single song played for six hours will be a Bowie song, coz that be weird. We’ll be playing HEAPS of Bowie across the six hours xo

Oh and as per the usual when we celebrate this legend, if you can pull off his Goblin King costume it’s free entry also because quite simply, you deserve it

RSVP Here!

Where are you currently based and what is the music scene like there? I was born and raised in London and am currently still based here. Its a city that has given birth to so many cultural movements as well as adopting many others and making it our own. The jazz scene in the UK has exploded in the last few years, often crossing into hip hop, grime and rock and I feel that has definitely influenced my sound.   How did you first start playing music, producing rapping? I started playing piano when I was at primary school but I would say I got really into it when I was in my teens after hearing the likes of Bill Evans and Chick Corea and that seemed to spark something. I'd dabbled in a bit of production but it wasn't until I was chilling with lots of producers when I went to study music in Leeds that I got more and more into it. I'd also been writing bars from around 15 or 16 but never really took it seriously until me and Lausse were freestyling at a house party and he insisted that I come over to his home studio and record a tune and thats kind of where it all began.. You've just released - self produced  'Life's A Bitch, I Just Need An Early Night' through College Music Records and it has been gaining some traction, receiving  just under half a million streams on Spotify alone since the release, what influenced the sound and songwriting? I'd gone through a lot of self-discovery and personal change over the few years leading up to that project so I think conceptually a lot of it focuses on self-development and growth. I didn't really have a pre-planned or set way I wanted the project to play out, but the themes and ideas seemed to just develop as I found threads through the stuff I was writing. I think in terms of the actual sound I'll always be deep routed in jazz especially the more emotive styles of Bill Evans or Dexter Gordon etc.. and I've always been into all the hip hop greats as well I think if you want to be doing this thing you have to know your history and study the greats/people that came before you. The same goes for when you're learning the tradition of jazz i guess! I was always hugely into the UK hip hop scene as a young teenager like Klashnekoff, Jehst and Taskforce and I think elements of that sound finds its way into the music often. But I'm trying to aim for music that has depth of narrative and musical complexity, whilst still fully saying true to who I am and where I come from. How did you go about writing the music? The writing process is kinda different for each song - some I had a really clear idea of how I wanted the whole thing to sound from the get go and some I had the beat and then just saw what came out lyrically, often chopping and changing stuff all the time. How did you approach the production/recording? I recorded the entire project between about 3 or 4 different bedrooms across the UK..haha! Some of it I recorded it at my mums house in London, some of it was recorded in my old house in Leeds, some of it at friends houses in Leeds. Had all kinds of makeshift stuff going on including taping a duvet around some opened cupboard doors to get rid of some the room sound when recording vocals..I feel like theres something quite charming about the DIY thing and I'm probably going to record the next project in a similar way. I also find working in my own comfortable space is a bit more creatively freeing than in a more clinical studio.  What programs/instruments did you use? The recording process was really fun - I recorded most of it in Leeds with people I went to music college with so was a very collaborative project on the musical front. I wanted to do more than just having samples and the same drum loop the whole way through. In terms of live instruments on the project I recorded keys + piano, drums, guitar, bass, trumpet, tenor and alto sax and violin and I try and include as much of that in the live show as I can. I wanted to cross over more traditional programmed drums layered with real drums as well as having some of the other live instruments layered with more electronic synths etc.  How did you come to release with College Music Records and how has the experience been working with College Music Records? I met Jonny from College Music at a gig when I was supporting Joe Armon-Jones in Leeds once, but we only had a brief chat. After that I heard about what he had been up to with CM and I was keen to get involved in some way. I had the project nearly finished and wanted to approach him to ask if he'd want to put any of the tracks on the CM spotify playlists. We went for a pint and he was keen to put the project out under their label which they were beginning to expand. Its been cool cos it feels like we're both at an early stage of what we're trying to do so even though they're a label, it feels grassroots and DIY.  Please tell us about the video that you have accompanying  'Life's A Bitch, I Just Need An Early Night' where did you film? Who with? How the concept came about? The video that I am releasing is for 'See U In The Morning' which is the lead single off Life's A Bitch. It's quite an introspective song - like a lot of the album - and I definitely wanted to convey that through the video. I wanted to portray a scene where you've been partying all night to run away from the darkest recesses of your mind but once it gets to about 5/6am you can't run anymore and it all hits you at once. I teamed up with an old friend of mine Simon Aukes Stolland who recently D.O.P'd 'Blue Story' which released in late 2019, and was one of the highest grossing films in its genre. Aside from his work being top quality he's a really solid guy to work with, very on the ball and open to trying things out and generally really helpful and sound. I also had Alex aka Verbz The Gaffer who did an amazing job in bringing the vision to life. Big ups to PK who's always there helping with the ideas and general vibes for these things too.  The headline release show for 'Life's A Bitch, I Just Need An Early Night' at Notting Hill Arts club was a sell-out show in which you were accompanied by a full 9-piece band and included support from Enny, Eerf Evil and Joe beard.   How did the band come together and how was this experience? The release show was a huge success and managed to sell out completely, which was a bit of a surprise for me. The album had only been out for about 3 weeks and I've never put an event on in my life so was a bit nervous about numbers etc. But with a small team we managed to spread the word and it got far and wide so big love to everyone who was involved with that. The live band are a mixture of musicians I've been playing with for the last 3 or 4 years or so who are all currently based in Leeds. I wanted to stay true to the sound of the record whilst also bringing a completely new dimension to the live show to make it engaging in its own way and I think we just about managed to do that! The live setup consists of only live instruments including drums, bass, guitar, 2 keyboards (sometimes I rap + play keys at the same time, others just rap, others just play keys), trumpet, violin and BVs.  Joe Beard, Enny and Eerf Evil absolutely killed it and helped warm up the crowd and I'm truly grateful to know and be working with them.  I hear your main collaborator is fellow rapper and producer Lausse The Cat and we that you often collaborate with B-ahwe who is a singer/songwriter. You work under a collective name of Velvet Blues, how did this all come about? We all met in Leeds while studying music and spent a lot of time working together on Lausse's first project entitled 'The Girl, The Cat and The Tree'. Around that time me and B-ahwe started writing our own music and it kind of grew from there. Velvet Blues is still quite a young concept but I guess its a collective-type thing and we'll see where it goes! I believe you're much stronger as a unit of individuals all backing each other in this game.  You're heavily involved with Root 73 which is a community grass roots studio space in Hackney in London. I hear that you're are in the final stages of finishing off a collaborative album with about 30 artists and producers, how has the recording process taken place and what have you found most rewarding and challenging through out the process? Yeah man the guys at Root are all amazing people. I met them when I moved back to London from Leeds and because I hadn't been back for a few years I wasn't really sure where to find a group of people doing similar things to what I was doing. But they were really welcoming and encouraging and I'm humbled to be a part of whats going on there. We have a collaborative album coming out this year called the silhouettes project - the idea was to pair different producers and artists, most of which had never worked together before and to see what they came up with. The result is a community focused, ultra diverse album showcasing individual artists and producers within the Root 73 community. I've really enjoyed being inspired by what the people around me have been making and all the different characters I've met throughout the process and there will be much more to come in the future.  Do you have any singles coming out soon? I'm currently working on my next project, as well as some standalone singles to follow up Life's A Bitch but ill be able to give a bit more info on that as time goes on. Who are you listening to at the moment? Listening wise I've found myself returning to the same things, especially Good Kid, M.a.a.d City and To Pimp A Butterfly by Kendrick Lamar - I always find there is always something new I discover every listen both lyrically and musically. I've also been listening to a lot of Steve Lacy and some King Krule as well as some 60s/70s Brazilian music like João Donato and João Gilberto which I think will find its way into my next project.  Favourite food and place to hangout? All I need is a good full english brekky any time of day and a cheap pint in Spoons.

I’d dabbled in a bit of production but it wasn’t until I was chilling with lots of producers when I went to study music in Leeds that I got more and more into it. I’d also been writing bars from around 15 or 16 but never really took it seriously until me and Lausse were freestyling at a house party and he insisted that I come over to his home studio and record a tune and thats kind of where it all began..

You’ve just released – self produced  ‘Life’s A Bitch, I Just Need An Early Night’ through College Music Records and it has been gaining some traction, receiving  just under half a million streams on Spotify alone since the release, what influenced the sound and songwriting?
I’d gone through a lot of self-discovery and personal change over the few years leading up to that project so I think conceptually a lot of it focuses on self-development and growth. I didn’t really have a pre-planned or set way I wanted the project to play out, but the themes and ideas seemed to just develop as I found threads through the stuff I was writing. I think in terms of the actual sound I’ll always be deep routed in jazz especially the more emotive styles of Bill Evans or Dexter Gordon etc.. and I’ve always been into all the hip hop greats as well I think if you want to be doing this thing you have to know your history and study the greats/people that came before you. The same goes for when you’re learning the tradition of jazz i guess! I was always hugely into the UK hip hop scene as a young teenager like Klashnekoff, Jehst and Taskforce and I think elements of that sound finds its way into the music often. But I’m trying to aim for music that has depth of narrative and musical complexity, whilst still fully saying true to who I am and where I come from.

How did you go about writing the music?
The writing process is kinda different for each song – some I had a really clear idea of how I wanted the whole thing to sound from the get go and some I had the beat and then just saw what came out lyrically, often chopping and changing stuff all the time.

How did you approach the production/recording?
I recorded the entire project between about 3 or 4 different bedrooms across the UK..haha! Some of it I recorded it at my mums house in London, some of it was recorded in my old house in Leeds, some of it at friends houses in Leeds. Had all kinds of makeshift stuff going on including taping a duvet around some opened cupboard doors to get rid of some the room sound when recording vocals..I feel like theres something quite charming about the DIY thing and I’m probably going to record the next project in a similar way. I also find working in my own comfortable space is a bit more creatively freeing than in a more clinical studio.

What programs/instruments did you use?
The recording process was really fun – I recorded most of it in Leeds with people I went to music college with so was a very collaborative project on the musical front.

I had the project nearly finished and wanted to approach him to ask if he’d want to put any of the tracks on the CM spotify playlists. We went for a pint and he was keen to put the project out under their label which they were beginning to expand. Its been cool cos it feels like we’re both at an early stage of what we’re trying to do so even though they’re a label, it feels grassroots and DIY.

Please tell us about the video that you have accompanying  ‘Life’s A Bitch, I Just Need An Early Night’ where did you film? Who with? How the concept came about?

STEPHEN MALKMUS Announces new album Traditional Techniques Shares first single 'Xian Man'

STEPHEN MALKMUS Announces new album Traditional Techniques Shares first single ‘Xian Man’

by the partae January 23, 2020
written by the partae

Stephen Malkmus announces his new album, Traditional Techniques, out Friday 6 March via Matador / Remote Control Record and shares lead single ‘Xian Man’.

Traditional Techniques, Malkmus’ third solo LP without the Jicks (or Pavement), is new phase folk music for new phase folks, with Malkmus as attuned as ever to the rhythms of the ever-evolving lingual slipstream. It’s packed with handmade arrangements, modern folklore, and 10 songs written and performed in his singular voice. An adventurous new album in an instantly familiar mode, Traditional Techniques creates a serendipitous trilogy with the loose fuzz of the Jicks’ Sparkle Hard (2018) and the solo bedroom experiments of Groove Denied (2019). Taken together, these three very different full-lengths in three years highlight an ever-curious songwriter committed to finding untouched territory.

Malkmus took on Traditional Techniques as a kind of self-dare. Conceived while recording Sparkle Hard at Portland’s Halfling Studio, Malkmus had observed the variety of acoustic instruments available for use. The idea escalated within a matter of weeks into a full set of songs, and shortly thereafter into a realized and fully committed album. When he returned to Halfling, Malkmus drew from a whole new musical palette–including a variety of Afghani instruments–to support an ache both quizzical and contemporary. The resulting Traditional Techniques is expansive and thrilling. Alongside gorgeous folk music, there are also occasional bursts of flute-laced swagger, straight-up commune rock (‘Xian Man’), and mind-bending fuzz.

Centered around the songwriter’s 12-string acoustic guitar, and informed by a half-century of folk-rock reference points, Traditional Techniques is the product of Malkmus and Halfling engineer/arranger-in-residence Chris Funk (The Decemberists). Matt Sweeney (Bonnie “Prince” Billy, Chavez) plays guitar throughout.

Rising North London Artist Natty Wylah Releases Sublime Jorja Smith Sampling New Single ‘Feel U’

Praise for Natty Wylah’s previous single ‘WHOAMI’

“ ‘WHOAMI’ rattles with dark beats and claustrophobic drum patterns, his rhetorical question pulsating throughout the single’s murky grooves.”- Line of Best Fit
“With a voice that engaging and an unquenchable fire in his belly, expect to hear a lot more from Natty Wylah in the future.”– Trench

“Although the track sounds like it coming from a place of anger, it bristles with clarity”- Surviving The Golden Age

Greeting 2020 with a burst of inspiration, Natty Wylah is pleased to release new single ‘Feel U’ (produced by dylantheinfamous), another injection of lyrical dexterity from the North-London artist. It follows the release of his 2019 widely-praised 2019 single ‘WHOAMI’ [listen]. Where ‘WHOAMI’ was bristling and intense, ‘Feel U’ is a burst of warmth through the frigid winter air.

“its funny it’s sunny outside
but I just feel like sitting indoors”

The track finds Natty ruminating on love and life over a flipped Jorja Smith sample taken from her UK garage leaning cut ‘On My Mind’. The sample is altered to a more melancholic quality than the original, adding to Natty’s stream of conscious raps on the track.

On the track, Natty says, “feel u is written from a hungover hole with a faint ray of light shining through contemplation. Through a haze of flings and things – needing something deeper: the light expands throughout the song culminating in a new day, telling them they can hate if they like “‘they’re just wasting their own time.’”.
In late 2019 Natty introduced himself with the impactful single ‘WHOAMI’, a song that was a fightback against the racial stereotypes, prejudice and misinformation he has experienced growing up as a mixed-race person in London. After building himself up in 2019, 2020 is set to be a big year for Natty Wylah, the release of ‘Feel U’ is just the beginning.

NOCTURNAL SUNSHINE – ‘GRAVITY’ FT RY X
OUT NOW

2019 was a point of new territory for Maya Jane Coles and her alter-ego, Nocturnal Sunshine. Unleashing the latest studio project in late 2018 with ‘Foundation’ and later ‘U&ME’ the storm began to stir in anticipation for the sophomore Nocturnal Sunshine album ‘Full Circle’, taking the alias in a new direction and delving deep into Maya’s hip-hop influences. Arriving with a plethora of collaborators in tow, Peaches, Catnapp, Three Six Mafia’s Gangsta Boo, Young M.A. and Rising London Rapper, CHA$EY JON£S to name a few, the album drew acclaimed support from all corners of the industry, from Resident Advisor and Mixmag to Q Magazine, FADER and Billboard. This stream only continued across the airwaves with support across Rinse FM and BBC Radio 1, rounding off with Maya appearing on BBC Radio 6 Music for a guestmix with Nemone’s Electric Ladyland.

Entering into a new year, Nocturnal Sunshine seeks to build on the path she has travelled so far, a journey that saw performances across the globe, gracing the stages of Coachella, Sonar Barcelona and London’s Field Day under the alias, along with a dual performance at esteemed London club, FOLD to launch her ‘Full Circle’ LP; Maya made a world first here by performing as both Maya Jane Coles and Nocturnal Sunshine in the same evening. As this story continues to unfold, Nocturnal Sunshine presents a link up with Australian singer-songwriter, Ry X on single ‘Gravity’.

Having travelled the world guided by his innate musical compass, Ry X is a musician whose talents know no bounds. From Costa Rica and Indonesia, to London, Berlin and even Hollywood, his excursions have born their fruits in the many collaborations Ry has sought out, linking up with Frank Wiedemann of German electronic duo, Âme under a new alias, Howling. This pairing found Ry aligned with Wiedemann’s, pioneering Innervisions brand, co-founded with Dixon and saw live performances for Ry at Amsterdam’s ADE Fesitval, along with London’s Albert Hall. Adding to this, Ry later caught the ear of R&B queen, Rihanna who invited him to remix single ‘Love on the Brain’.

Grabbing the attention of Maya with his ethereal vocals, they team up on ‘Gravity’ to create a bubbling and deeply emotive cut. Inclusive of the signature downtempo breakbeat nuances that lie at the foundations of the Nocturnal Sunshine universe, the haunting and mildly soulful vocals of Ry X strike a chord of their own on ‘Gravity’.

Donny Benét Testimonials   “Jeffrey Lebowski, it is "The Dude", Donny Benét, it is "The Don". Quite simply.” “What’s so refreshing about Donny is how he so unashamedly embraces human sensuality, without fear of judgement or concern for the opinions of others – he’s here for a good time and a long time.” “The Donny Benét Show band…came across like hired guns, the kind of band Michael McDonald would have flown to the Bahamas to make a solo record in the mid-80s.” “Donny Benét – or, ‘The Don’ – has a real tight-rope-walking shtick about him. Donny Benét Testimonials

“Jeffrey Lebowski, it is “The Dude”, Donny Benét, it is “The Don”. Quite simply.”

“What’s so refreshing about Donny is how he so unashamedly embraces human sensuality, without fear of judgement or concern for the opinions of others – he’s here for a good time and a long time.”

“The Donny Benét Show band…came across like hired guns, the kind of band Michael McDonald would have flown to the Bahamas to make a solo record in the mid-80s.”

“Donny Benét – or, ‘The Don’ – has a real tight-rope-walking shtick about him. He’s a kind of groovy sleazebag with a heart of gold, the uncle at the family gathering who rocks up in an old beater Dodge and gives you a cigarette, or something to that effect. What is your name and role within King of Foxes? Hi, I'm Olivia Street, and I'm the songwriter, singer, and guitarist in King of Foxes.  Where are you currently based? We're in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.  How did King of Foxes form? King of Foxes is my solo project, but I'm lucky enough to work with some great musicians who contribute so much. I have some players based in Toronto and some in Edmonton, so the band is a little bit different depending on where you see us play! The first King of Foxes album came out in 2016, and we just re-released our second album, Salt & Honey, on vinyl this year. Your new single 'No Wrong' is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting for this track?  This was such a fun track to record, because it's definitely a departure from our usual sound. I had the opportunity to work with a producer named Beatchild when I was doing a residency at the National Music Centre in Calgary last year. We collaborated on "No Wrong," and I love the direction it went in – it's definitely electro-pop, but it has a vintage quality to the sounds in it. I love that this song became what it needed to be organically, but that the original essence and intention are so present in it. Please talk us through the creative and collaborative process: During that residency in Calgary, I did a lot of writing by myself in my hotel room in the evenings. No distractions: a Jazzmaster, a notebook, and a bottle of wine (and a king size bed, all to myself!) For this particular song, I had a clear vision of the melody, lyrics, and chord progression, but it initially had a folky vibe. I knew I wanted to take in a more contemporary direction. Byram (aka. Beatchild) has such a gentle energy and way of working; it felt like a natural progression to add the electropop elements. Now the song feels like it belongs to the 21st century. How did you go about writing 'No Wrong'? Lyrics, to me, are the fascia in the body of a song: the essential connective tissue that weaves everything together. Sometimes I'll hang on to a thought for years before it becomes a lyric, turning it over in my mind and trying to figure out why this piece of information is important. When I'm in the writing process, I do a lot of free-writing and object writing, as exercises to distill my abstract thoughts into imagery. The "thought nugget" of this song came from a vision I had when I was pregnant with my son. I had what can only be described as an out of body experience, where I saw that the baby inside of me was protected and unconditionally loved, by me... And that I, too, was unconditionally loved, by some higher power – my "light body" was holding me and caring for me, just like my body was doing for this tiny baby. The image I saw reminded me of Russian dolls.. so my entry point into this song was trying to describe the tiniest Russian doll, small enough to be swallowed, "like a pill." Where and when did you record and who with? We recorded this partially at the National Music Centre in Calgary and partially at Beatchild's studio in Toronto. His studio space is inside the Coalition Music building. (Coalition is a label that's home to some heavy hitting Canadian artists... I am a huge Our Lady Peace fan, and when I walk around in that building, looking at their pictures on the walls, I feel like a total fangirl!) How did you approach the recording process? With no expectations other than to explore where we could go with it.   Who did you work with during the recording/production process? In addition to Beatchild, Brandon Baker of Electric Religious, came out to Toronto with me and laid down some of the textural guitar parts.  Who are you listening to at the moment? Ariel Posen, Groenland, Don Vail, Zaki Ibrahim What do you like to do away from music? I spend time with my 4-year-old son and our yellow lab. I read a lot. I do yoga. I drink martinis. I buy more T-shirts than I probably need. I'm also a sweatpants connoisseur.    What's planned for 2020? We have festival dates lined up, and we'll be doing some pocket tours around Alberta. I'm currently writing songs for a new album (can't stop, won't stop!) Favourite food and place to hangout?  I've been working my way through a Costco-size box of chocolate truffles someone left at my house around Christmas... I don't have a sweet tooth, but I do have a soft spot for dark chocolate with a little sprinkle of sea salt on it. (Café Brio, in Victoria BC makes the world's best chocolate truffle, btw. It's also one of my favourite places to hang out when I'm on the coast.) We did a lot of travelling last year, and honestly right now my favourite place to hang out is my own home.  Website: www.kingoffoxesband.com Socials: @kingoffoxesband on all platforms

King of Foxes

What is your name and role within King of Foxes?

Hi, I’m Olivia Street, and I’m the songwriter, singer, and guitarist in King of Foxes.

Where are you currently based?

We’re in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

How did King of Foxes form?

King of Foxes is my solo project, but I’m lucky enough to work with some great musicians who contribute so much. I have some players based in Toronto and some in Edmonton, so the band is a little bit different depending on where you see us play! The first King of Foxes album came out in 2016, and we just re-released our second album, Salt & Honey, on vinyl this year.

Your new single ‘No Wrong’ is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting for this track?

This was such a fun track to record, because it’s definitely a departure from our usual sound. Picnic Announce Their fabric Debut For 8th Birthday w/ Francesco Del Garda, Laurine, Cicilio, Quest, Christian AB and Andy Luff   Picnic heads to the UK’s most treasured club for their 8th birthday celebration. London’s underground party crew has long held a place at the heart of the capital’s underground scene, building a strong ethos built upon some of Europe’s most discerning house and techno artists, and now they set the bar even higher with a birthday takeover on Sat 14th March in fabric’s legendary Room 1.   Since launching back in 2012, Picnic have been the epicentre of many memorable parties at a vast selection of distinctive spaces in both London and Europe, including Hackney Marshes, Victorian Vaults, Studio Spaces, BRET Amsterdam, FOLD, Hoppetosse Berlin, Lion & Lamb, Parker Lewis in Mannheim and loads more. With a multitude of underground venues and a strong collective of regulars under their belt, they are now ready to take over fabric’s legendary Room 1 for what will be a landmark birthday celebration.   The artists most frequently affiliated with Picnic are the kind that are best known for their deep digging prowess, and the cast of talents they will bring to EC1 is no exception. First up is Francesco Del Garda who prepares to share some of his all-embracing record collection in the space. The Italian selector is renowned for hunting down obscure gems from the deepest corners of house, techno and UK garage, which he blends with a fluid ease.    Also landing for their debut with Picnic are Laurine & Cecilio, the Berlin duo who first rose to prominence as part of Slow Life. Like Del Garda, this beloved crew is comprised of a small group of vinyl devotees, and their DJ sets always traverse various styles and eras loosely tied in house and techno. They also run a killer label, but it’s through their skills behind the decks that Laurine and Cecilio have caught most people’s attention. Christian AB & Quest also go back-to-back. Having cut their teeth on the London scene over the last few years, today both DJs are busy bringing their classy sound together all over Europe, but this March is the first time they will embrace the decks together in Farringdon. Picnic’s own Andy Luff rounds off a top-drawer bill that will mark the party’s anniversary in fitting style.    RA Tickets:  https://www.residentadvisor.net/events/1354102   FB Event: https://www.facebook.com/events/517468108870397/   LINEUP: Francesco Del Garda Laurine & Cecilio (Slow Life) Christian AB & Quest (IT) Andy Luff

The Lazy Eyes are a Sydney four-piece who create prismatic, sprawling psychedelic rock. ‘Cheesy Love Song’ is the lead single from their debut EP, the first of a number of releases over the coming year. Listen and watch HERE. Harvey (vocals, guitar, keys), Itay (vocals, guitar), Blake (bass) and Noah (drums) have been playing together since they were 15, having met each other while attending Newtown Performing Arts High School. In between then and now, news of the band’s playfully jam-filled and constantly morphing live show has spread throughout their home city like word-of-mouth wildfire, building up a fervent, cult following. Now done with high school, The Lazy Eyes are finally ready to share their music with the wider world.  Showcases at Bigsound 2019 saw The Lazy Eyes take that buzz national, drawing praise from Home and Hosed’s Declan Byrne and seeing triple j, Happy Mag and more, name them as a future act to watch. They have also recently played Fairgrounds Festival, Newtown Festival and are set to perform at Laneway Festival in Sydney in February. A patient, slowly unspooling track built around languid piano, echoing guitar lines and vintage soaked vocal melodies and harmonies, ‘Cheesy Love Song’ is content to take its time introducing the band, letting its tonal and textural choices lazily mutate from flourishes of soft strings and warm synthesizers into heavy-handed drumming and wild guitar sirens. As a debut single, ‘Cheesy Love Song’ is a wonderfully blooming introduction to The Lazy Eyes that surreptitiously disguises its true sense of ambition and skill.  With their debut release, The Lazy Eyes present themselves as part of the second generation of Australia’s burgeoning psych-rock scene. Bringing a meld of pedal-effected psychedelia, 60's pop-inspired chord progressions, the tenderness of The Flaming Lips, and the pocket symphonies of Brian Wilson, The Lazy Eyes create emotive and expansive alternative rock. The type of music ideal for introspection, 'Cheesy Love Song' is a small, insular universe unto itself.  The debut also comes with the announcement of management, distribution and agent signings with Travis Banko at Lunatic Entertainment (CHVRCHES, Baker Boy, Skeggs) and The Orchard signing for the world. On the live side, the band will be booked by Matt Bates at Primary Talent (Alt-J, The 1975, Wolf Alice) for UK/Europe/Asia bookings, Ryan Craven at Paradigm Agency (The War on Drugs, Lorde, CHVRCHES) for North America & Evan Davis at Village Sounds (POND, DMA's, Hatchie) for ANZ. ‘Cheesy Love Song’ by The Lazy Eyes is out now - buy/stream it here.  Stay connected with The Lazy Eyes:  Instagram | Facebook

INTRODUCING THE LAZY EYES WITH THEIR DEBUT SINGLE ‘CHEESY LOVE SONG’

by the partae January 22, 2020
written by the partae

Bringing a meld of pedal-effected psychedelia, 60’s pop-inspired chord progressions, the tenderness of The Flaming Lips, and the pocket symphonies of Brian Wilson, The Lazy Eyes create emotive and expansive alternative rock. The type of music ideal for introspection, ‘Cheesy Love Song‘ is a small, insular universe unto itself.

Fledgling Melbourne and Castlemaine act The Bell Streets make their debut with the first of 10 songs to be released in 2020, the slick bedroom pop number, ‘Fragile’. Birthed from the somewhat inevitable partnership of Nick Batterham (The Earthmen, Blindside, Cordrazine) and Josh Meadows (The Sugargliders, The Steinbecks), The Bell Streets started writing songs together about a year ago after a collective three decades or so working and playing throughout the Melbourne music scene and beyond. Having known each other since the early ’90s when they were both in prominent bands on the long gone but not forgotten Melbourne indie label Summershine Records, Josh and Nick have played on the same bills, toured together, borrowed each other’s instruments and have become great friends. That friendship is about to bear fruit with the anticipated release of The Bell Streets’ debut album Monument, set to land Friday 3 April via Popboomerang Records. For now though, fans of Nick’s signature moody melancholy and Josh’s distinct pop sensibilities can revel in the first released material from the album on the new single ‘Fragile’. After writing the opening phrase and accompanying ascending piano line, Josh took his humble idea to Nick who quickly put flesh on it, adding loungey licks and melodic charm, to become the pop lullaby that is ‘Fragile’.   “Fragile. A song in praise of fragility and vulnerability – qualities that are not highly valued in the world we live in, where brashness, bravado and self-confidence dominate. To be vulnerable with each other is to be truly human. But, of course, to be vulnerable is to leave ourselves open to being hurt. So our inclination is to harden up, to close ourselves off, to keep our true selves hidden. The song is about honouring the fragility in another person.” – Josh Meadows, The Bell Streets   Emerging from weekly songwriting sessions in Nick’s studio, the 10 songs of Monument are genuine collaborations, with the pair sharing lyric writing and singing duties. The Bell Streets’ voices harmonise easily, as if they had been singing together for years. As they’ve worked on the record, making themselves vulnerable to each other (as songwriting requires), the two have grown closer. Sometimes Josh has come up with the key line to one of Nick’s lyrics. Sometimes vice versa. The resulting sound has a classic feel, but remains fresh and new. The Bell Streets’ songs are poppy, yet have substance. They are born from experience, rejection, steadfastness and unfaithfulness, playfulness, pleasure, forgiveness, new beginnings and gratitude.   Written and performed by Nick Batterham and Josh Meadows Vocals by Josh Meadows Recorded and mixed by Nick Batterham Mastered by Adam Dempsey at Deluxe ‘Fragile’ single is out now via Bandcamp / iTunes / Apple Music / Spotify

E^ST’ and announces his first headline shows of 2020 - which will see Australia’s leading hip-hop prospect hit four metro cities around Australia.    The upcoming tour, presented by triple j, kicks off in Melbourne on March 28 and is followed by three further metro shows in Brisbane (The Triffid, April 3), Sydney (Metro Theatre, April 4) and Fremantle (April 11). Enlisting the help of renowned graphic designer Jonathan Zawada (Flume, The Presets) on poster art duties, was a no-brainer for Kwame who is a longtime fan of his work and is their first collaboration together. These shows mark the first headline tour since Kwame’s completely sold out 2019 EP dates and are expected to fill up quickly.  They also land off the back of Kwame’s most recent single, 'NOBODY feat. E^ST’, which was premiered by Zane Lowe on Apple Music's Beats 1, and the second taste of his forthcoming third extended play. The track is a powerful anthem of self-belief; an ambitious leap in lyrical content and production, born out of Kwame's frustration with life, the creative industries and those who think they know it all.   “It's a reminder for myself and anyone else to listen to yourself, outside opinions are irrelevant,” says Kwame.  This theme rings true for the visual accompaniment to the song also landing today. Filmed in Marrickville and directed by Zain Ayub and Kwame, this stunningly raw short film follows a life-changing narrative for a young, troubled Ghanaian boy facing hardships. “His new found friends mentor and nurture the courage within him so that he may move beyond despondency and feel free.” says Kwame.   “The choice to shoot majority of the film in Marrickville reflects its raw texture, sense of realness and celebrates the multicultural background the suburb holds - which is synonymous with the films ideologies. The themes explored represent the diffusion of cultural and societal gaps thereby creating a more universal and globalist experience. The messages within the film are that race, age and status shouldn’t matter when one's back is against the wall.” With such a strong and universally applicable message, it’s no surprise Kwame’s ethos is connecting all over. With huge performances at Splendour in the Grass, SXSW and appearances alongside industry heavyweights such as Migos, Skepta, 6lack, AJ Tracey and Peking Duk, Kwame has also been announced as support for A$AP Ferg’s March 4  Melbourne show. This will be Kwame’s first show of 2020 and an opportunity for fans to see his live set prior to his tour.   It’s difficult to find a corner of the Australian music scene that hasn’t been taken over by Kwame. Further expanding his already diverse catalogue, the collaborations have been immense for the Ghanaian Australian producer, writer, artist and engineer. Teaming up on party track ‘Summer Rain’ with Wave Racer, Kwame then joined Matt Corby on Triple One’s ‘So Easy’. 'NOBODY feat. E^ST’, is arguably his most reflective work to date and a clear indication of the heights this boundary pushing artist is hoping to take Australian hip-hop to.  Tickets for Kwame’s ‘Please, Get Home Safe’ Tour are on sale 9am AEDT Thursday 23 January at thatboykwame.com KWAME 'Please, Get Home Safe' TOUR   SAT 28 MAR | Corner Hotel, MELBOURNE, VIC  FRI 3 APR | The Triffid, BRISBANE, QLD  SAT 4 APR | Metro Theatre, SYDNEY, NSW  SAT 11 APR | Freo Social, FREMANTLE, WA CONNECT ONLINE WITH KWAME
