The track instantly captivates with flowing synths and guitars, before bursting into life with its swinging style and punchy drums, then giving way to lead singer Jordan Clarey. Massive hooks fill the choruses, accompanied by the tracks infectious swinging beat, not leaving out Jordan’s backing vocals giving the perception of backing group singing and clicking their fingers in time with the beat. It’s about loving someone despite the space, time or distance between them. It’s still subtle enough to feel like a love song, while also giving props to the characters from the film.” To coincide with the release, the band are heading stateside to perform in the USA and Canada alongside pop-rock juggernauts Set It Off, following on from performances throughout China earlier in November. This continues on from a furious touring schedule, which has seen them support the likes of The Dangerous Summer (USA) The Maine (USA), Deaf Havana (UK), Never Shout Never (USA) and Stand Atlantic (AUS). “The nostalgic pop sound that we have created is something that we have been working on for a long time and it’s amazing that we have the opportunity to take these songs overseas and showcase them to people on the other side of the world” mentions bass player Scott MacDougall. THE BIG MOON RELEASE NEW ALBUM ‘WALKING LIKE WE DO’

by the partae January 10, 2020
written by the partae

Out today via Fiction Records / Caroline Australia
https://caroline.lnk.to/WalkingLikeWeDo

“A love letter to the dirty streets of London… recalls such English eccentrics as The Kinks, Blur, Pulp and Arctic Monkeys” – The Telegraph ★★★★

“The Big Moon show that they aren’t afraid to stray from their comfort zone” – DIY ★★★★

“A fresh, widescreen sound and outward-looking perspective move Brit indie-rockers up a level” – Q Magazine ★★★★

“The London four-piece deliver a follow-up that oozes confidence, attitude and class” – Sunday Times UK

“Walking Like We Do signals a band growing up, having fun, and developing their sound” – Loud & Quiet

The Big Moon are very excited to release their new album, ‘Walking Like We Do’, today via Fiction Records / Caroline Australia.

Recorded early 2019, in three and a half weeks – compared to the 12 days their 2017 debut Love In The 4th Dimension took – Walking Like We Do represents a giant leap forward for The Big Moon. “Before we were more of a plug-in and play kind of a band, but these songs need a bit more,” lead singer, guitarist and songwriter Juliette Jackson explains. Frequently piano and keyboard-led rather than being reliant on grungey guitars, and rich in tight-knit vocal harmonies and rolling grooves, it’s a cinematic but innately hook-laden set that truly expands the band’s range.

“For a while I think I was writing songs that were more like [those on] the first album because I felt like that’s what we should do,” Jackson says. “But after six months I knew I wanted it to be sonically bigger, deeper, wider and more spacious than a rock album. We wanted to let the songs breathe a bit more. And while we still wanted it to have energy and all the right feelings, we just wanted to be more creative with how you conjure a mood.”

Citing Vampire Weekend, Solange, James Blake and Frank Ocean as reference points, the band approached producer Ben Allen, whose diverse work with Animal Collective, Gnarls Barkley and Bombay Bicycle Club made him the perfect fit for the project. After an introductory Skype chat, the band travelled to his studio in Atlanta, Georgia.

This renewed ambition is reflected in Jackson’s choice of subject matter too, which largely finds her swapping straightforward love songs for more thorny subjects. Driven by sombre piano trills, ‘Dog Eat Dog’ meditates on societal injustice, and was inspired by the Grenfell tragedy. ‘Barcelona’ examines the inevitable state of flux caused by growing older, while ‘It’s Easy Then’ discusses the sense of impending doom that goes hand in hand with being a citizen of the world in 2019. Extending that theme further, lead single ‘Your Light’ – which has received high rotation airplay on triple j – is about finding solace in relationships during chaotic times, finding Jackson as wry as ever in couplets like, “Maybe it’s an end cause this don’t feel like a start / But every generation probably thought they were the last.”

“I don’t want to use the word empowerment,” bassist Celia Archer grimaces, “But there are definitely songs that offer some sort of hope. There’s a lyric in ‘A Hundred Ways To Land’: “We don’t know where we’re going / But we’re walking like we do.” That sums up a lot of what Juliette was saying, in that there’s a lot going on, and we’re all figuring it out, but it’s better to move confidently forward in the face of all of this shit than just do nothing.”

“It all feels relentless,” Jackson agrees. “I mean, everyone is trying to process it. We made these songs to provide listeners with some release. And for us too. It took us a while to realise we could do anything on this album, and feel confident with our own voices. But I realised that there is strength in our character, in our lyrics, and in the decisions we make.”

Our weekly Cherry Blues is FREE ENTRY with doors from 5PM
Espresso Martinis for $10 all afternoon too!

This Sunday January 12th we’re welcoming Melbourne’s legendary guitar virtuoso Mr. Phil Para to Cherry.

Yes, if you’d heard the story Phil has recovered from his quadruple heart by-pass surgery and back tearin’ up stages. Have you joined us for a bevy at the new Cherry (68 Little Collins Street) yet? Phil delivers his unique fusion of blues, jazz and Latin groove influences with the type of sheer showmanship that has found this axeman become true folklore in our town.

Our weekly Cherry Blues is still FREE ENTRY with doors now from 5PM and supervised children are welcome to attend. We’re also offering table seating with a new snacks menu and wine list.

Starcrawler
Monday 13th January, 8pm

Starcrawler (USA) performing live on the Cherry stage!
Support: Smooch
Ticket entitles you to stay and party!

This Friday don’t miss Los Angeles based Starcrawler (USA) and their glammed up, punk’n’roll assault live at Cherry! Lead by the untamable stage presence of vocalist Arrow de Wilde, they’re headed down under on a colossal East Coast run supporting fellow Californian natives The Growlers.

The frequent reporting of their oft-visceral live show (at one South by South West appearance, de Wilde terrorized the room by spitting blood at photographers and slapping punters’ phones from their hands), appearance on Jools Holland and the exciting second album Devour You has us eagerly awaiting their Australian debut.

“Blending the sludgy, doom-laden riffs of Black Sabbath with the urgent pop-punk of The Runaways, the young LA band Starcrawler are a group whose entire DNA seems linked to the 1970’s” – The Guardian.

With admission to any ticketed show in our bandroom you’re welcome to stay until close and party. Cherry is now located at 68 Little Collins Street. It’s probably the best rock&roll joint in town.

Where are you currently based and what is the music scene like there? I currently live in the college town of Auburn, AL, where we have a small but dedicated community of electronic music fans. There are several local DJ’s, including myself, who hold residencies and throw events for the EDM community, while also hosting a slew of new and established artists. How did you first start playing music? With both my parents being musicians, I started playing at an early age; first learning how to drum, then learning guitar, and finally piano. I participated in the music programs at my school for several years playing percussion, and once I even got to perform at Carnegie Hall. What's been happening recently? Things have been pretty crazy lately. Getting my EP picked up by none other than Gramatik has definitely helped expose my music to a lot of people, and I’ve been steadily booking shows for 2020 as a result. Between performing and visiting family for the holidays, I’ve been trying to find time to sit down and work on some new material. Your new EP 'Manufactured Moments' is out now via Lowtemp, what influenced the sound and songwriting for this EP? With this EP I really wanted to explore the sounds of 60’s-70’s psychedelia and create something that instilled a feeling of antiquated grooviness, presented in the form of modern nuero-hop beats. I take a lot of influence from the bass music community (obviously), but also from older psychedelic soul records and bands. I tried to bridge the gap between the two. How did you go about writing the music? I spent a little over a month preparing for this album by digging through old records and cutting samples that would serve as the building blocks of the tracks. During this time I also created a plethora of sounds using synthesis and cut samples of those as well. Once I felt I had all the building blocks, I spent a month straight working in the studio 9-5, creating ideas for beats. I generated around 10 initial rough ideas and then chose my favorite four to complete, and these four are what you hear on the EP. Where and when did you record/produce? I produced the entirety of the record in my home studio in Auburn. I prefer to begin working as early as possible so I can have all day to complete an idea. A good session often went into the early hours of the next morning. What programs/instruments did you use? I produce my music in Ableton and self-recorded the majority of the guitar heard in the EP. The electronic sounds were created using Serum and Operator (both are software synthesizers in Ableton) and a handful of analogue synthesizers. How did you approach the recording/production process? For this EP, I really wanted to take an organized and planned approach to the writing process with a lot of self-imposed deadlines. I find that when I just work based on how I’m feeling, a lot of tracks tend to get stuck in limbo and are never finished. For this EP I made a pretty meticulous plan for how I would go about writing, with deadlines for each phase of the process so I wouldn’t get bogged down with indecision. I think the results really speak volumes. As to me, this definitely feels like my best and most cohesive work to date. How did you come to release Manufactured Moments via Lowtemp? I have been working with Adam Stehr (Gramatik’s touring guitarist) for the past few years on guitar and music in general. Adam is extremely talented and knowledgeable. I’m very grateful to be able to learn from him. When I asked him to help me with the mixes for a few of my tracks, he ended up forwarding them to Denis (Gramatik). Apparently Denis dug the tunes, and he offered me to release on Lowtemp shortly after hearing the EP. It’s a huge honor to be featured on the label of someone I have listened to and looked up to for so long, and I’m extremely grateful to Adam for making it happen. He was even kind enough to lay down some guitar which can be heard on “Candlelight." What do you like to do away from music? My biggest hobby away from music is probably reading, I love books. Additionally I love film and video games. Anything with a story. Beyond that I enjoy creating digital art, either for my music or just for fun, and being outside with my dog. Who are you listening to at the moment? Electronic music wise i’ve really been enjoying the latest from Charlesthefirst, Of The Trees, and Jade Cicada. These guys all push the envelope when it comes to sound design but they present it in such a chill, laid-back way that I identify with heavily. Beyond electronic beats I really stay listening to albums from my favorite bands like Radiohead, Washed Out, and Tame Impala. I’m also always digging for groovy classic records and rare gems to add to my productions. What's planned for 2020? I’ve got another upcoming release this month with Wavecraft Collective (date tba) and I’m really excited to start the year off with this one because it’s an especially hard tune. I’ve also got a handful of collaborations i’ve been working on with some really talented people and I’m really excited to share them. Performance wise I think this will be my biggest year yet. I am working with the team at Electric Hawk to spread my wings as much as possible this year (pun intended) and have already booked a slew of show in new cities. Hoping for big things and a few festivals this year. Favourite food and place to hangout? Definitely Kung-Pao Chicken, especially if I made it myself. Favorite place to hangout is definitely my porch. I live on the second story and have a massive porch that overlooks downtown. Perfect place to read or work on music.

What’s been happening recently?

Things have been pretty crazy lately. Getting my EP picked up by none other than Gramatik has definitely helped expose my music to a lot of people, and I’ve been steadily booking shows for 2020 as a result. Between performing and visiting family for the holidays, I’ve been trying to find time to sit down and work on some new material.

In December 2019, XL Recordings announced that the acclaimed, Chicago-based jazz musician Makaya McCraven is to release a unique reimagining of I’m New Here, the final album by the late, legendary musician, poet and author Gil Scott-Heron. Titled We’re New Again, the album will be released on February 7th and marks the tenth anniversary of I’m New Here. It’s the second full-length interpretation of the album, following Jamie xx’s 2011 We’re New Here album. First conceptualised in 2005, and ultimately produced, by Richard Russell during New York recording sessions commencing in January 2008, I’m New Here was Gil Scott-Heron’s first album in thirteen years and found him sounding as vital and insightful as ever before, as Russell wrapped a minimal and electronic sonic world around Scott-Heron’s raw vocals. On We’re New Again, those original sessions now have a complete new context, using samples collected from McCraven’s improvised live sessions with new wave Chicago jazz musicians and vintage samples taken from McCraven’s musician parents’ recordings. It’s a musical situation that reconnects Scott-Heron with his hometown of Chicago, and a lineage of jazz and the blues that perfectly compliments his voice. Today sees the release of the first piece of music from the album: McCraven’s reimagining of ‘Where Did The Night Go’. It’s a perfect example of McCraven’s approach to the record and features a sample from the Stephen McCraven Quartet’s ‘Silhouette of Eric’. Makaya McCraven, whose work Richard Russell first discovered after hearing McCraven’s 2017’s Highly Rare album, is widely regarded as one of the most exciting and original voices in modern jazz. Equally renowned and revered as a musician, drummer, beat-maker and producer, McCraven has released a run of records that are at once genre-defying and redefining such as Universal Beings, Highly Rare and Where We Come From (Chicago x London mixtape) for the highly influential Chicago label International Anthem. Algiers have debuted new track and video ‘We Can’t Be Found’, taken from the London/NYC four-piece’s highly anticipated third album There Is No Year, out January 17 on Matador Records / Remote Control. The mesmerising visual for the sinuous, dub-inflected song, which builds to a soaring, cascading chorus, propelled by the powerhouse vocals of frontman Franklin James Fisher, was directed by Ian Cone. “I always feel the most successful music videos are the ones that are reflective and convey the mood of the song to the listener over everything else,” says guitarist Lee Tesche. “In this instance, we collaborated with the artist Lloyd Benjamin, trying to frame some of his sculpture work in a more abstracted way, referencing the urban dystopian cityscapes found in the German expressionist films of the 1930s. The result aspires to be somewhere in between the unsettling work of Darius Khondji and the set design of The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari or Fritz Lang's Metropolis.” ‘We Can’t Be Found’ follows the release of ‘Void’, accompanied by a visceral live video shot in the band’s hometown of Atlanta, as well as the video for ‘Dispossession’, filmed in the Noisy le Grand suburbs of Paris. The Guardian described the latter track as “powered, as ever, by the soapbox preacher vocals of Franklin James Fisher, and amplified by portentous gospel backing vocals, the Atlanta group anthemically square up to oppression”. There Is No Year was recorded in New York throughout 2019 by childhood friends and Atlanta natives Franklin James Fisher, Ryan Mahan and Lee Tesche, as well as drummer Matt Tong (ex-Bloc Party), alongside producers Randall Dunn (Sunn O))), Earth, Oren Ambarchi) and Ben Greenberg (Zs, Uniform, The Men). The album is titled after author and fellow Atlanta native Blake Butler’s novel of the same name, a major inspiration to the band over the course of the album’s making. “Even those aware of the ideals of this outspoken four-piece will find their latest direction on There Is No Year traversing unprecedented ground,” says Butler in his bio for the album. From the instant synth-pulse of the opening seconds of There is No Year, it’s clear that Algiers have set out to stake new ground, internally as much as sonically. At the forefront of this evolution is the centrality of power housed in Algiers’ multi-instrumentalist lead vocalist, Franklin James Fisher, whose voice and words provide the backbone of the album, his lyrics sourced entirely from an epic poem, Misophonia, composed during his search for meaning amidst a protracted personal period of anxiety and lack. There Is No Year encompasses future-minded post-punk R&B from the trapped heart of ATL, where they began; to industrial soundscapes à la 4AD-era Scott Walker or Iggy & Bowie’s Berlin period; to something like the synthetic son of Marvin Gaye and Fever Ray. The whip-tight rhythm section of multi-instrumentalist Ryan Mahan and Matt Tong moves back and forth from infectious menace to sci-fi soundtrack to big band fever dream. Mahan’s beat programming and synth constructions fill out the fibrous threshold, while Tesche’s sound-sleeves and aural-layering shapeshift into a richly polished means of exploration, revealing more and more the deeper you delve. Laughing Gas is the third EP from Wild Nothing, and follows his recently released album, Live From Brooklyn Steel. Tatum delves deeper into the territory where he thrives: namely, the synth and sophisti-pop of the 1980s. Working within a more mechanical and synthetic framework than his previous releases, Wild Nothing continues to delicately toe the line between the organic and the unnatural. These are still pop songs, but there’s an underlying sense of uneasiness that threads the music together. Recorded in Los Angeles and Richmond with the help of Jorge Elbrecht, these five songs were originally imagined alongside last year's Indigo and were written and tracked simultaneously with the album. When work on the full-length was nearing completion, Tatum set these ideas aside; they seemed to fit better on their own. In spare moments between tours, Tatum began to look back and piece the songs together at his home studio in Richmond, reconnecting with Elbrecht to mix the EP. “I think of the EP’s title as being representative of a kind of manufactured bliss and loss of control,” says Tatum. “So much of people’s lives are caught up in the quest for wholeness and sometimes it feels so much easier to loosen our grip through these fabricated shortcuts, whether it’s escapism, self-medication, seeking external validation or any number of other things. I often find myself guilty of almost all of these, but ultimately I think this EP finds me in a place of trying to go easier on myself. I've been extremely fortunate to continue releasing the music I love after 10 years of Wild Nothing and this release feels no different.” Wild Nothing - 'Foyer' Purchase / Stream: https://WildNothing.lnk.to/LaughingGas

Wild Nothing – the project of Richmond, VA-based Jack Tatum – will release his new EP, Laughing Gas, on January 31st on Captured Tracks / Remote Control, and today presents ‘Foyer,’ the propulsive, synth-funk lead single.

Recorded in Los Angeles and Richmond with the help of Jorge Elbrecht, these five songs were originally imagined alongside last year’s Indigo and were written and tracked simultaneously with the album.

Where are you currently based and what is the music scene like there?

I’m currently based in Bali. There’s so many different music scenes in Bali from traditional music to the underground scene.

How did you first start singing and playing music?

I was interested in music from a young age and played my first instrument at 6years old. As a young teenager I explored all types of instruments and listened to all kinds of different music that inspired me to start writing, make music and learn how to sing.

You’ve recently landed in Australia, how’s it been so far?

Melbourne has been amazing, I’ve seen a lot of great bands, underground culture, street art and skateboarding scene. The city is so inspiring.

You’ve just released your debut 14 track album ‘The Time Is Now’ what influenced the sound and songwriting?

The influence mostly comes from the 50’s era to the 70s punk and rock and roll. My songwriting is mostly influenced from my own life experiences.

How did you go about writing the music and over what time period were the songs written?

There are both English and Indonesian songs on my album which I have written over the past few years. Some songs came to me effortlessly but others took a little longer.

Where and when did you record and who with?

I recorded my album between Jakarta and Bali with a lot of talented musicians. I finished the album with my producer Cipta Gun at his studio in Bali.

How did you approach the recording process?

Some songs were recorded live and other songs were recorded track by track between Jakarta and Bali.

What programs/instruments did you use to record/produce/master?

We used all live recorded instruments and protools to master.

What did you find most challenging and rewarding during the songwriting and recording process?

The most challenging thing was probably scheduling everyone’s time to record. The most rewarding thing was being able to compose my music with so many talented people.

Where can we buy/listen to ‘The Time Is Now’?

The album is out now on all digital music platforms. The CD and merchandise is available through my website www.reno.co.id

You are from the beautiful country of Indonesia, what is the live music scene like there at the moment?

Indonesia is huge and we have more than 17,000 islands so we definitely have a broad mix of all types of live music. From traditional, electronic, punk and pop culture.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

I’m not listening to anything in particular at the moment but I’m always looking for all types of new music and bands to inspire me.

What’s planned for 2020?

Touring to promote my album ‘The Time is now’ and a lot of skateboarding.

Favourite food and place to hangout?

In Bali you can always catch me hanging at ‘Gimme Shelter’, ‘Twice’ bar or the skatepark. My favourite food is Babi guling, google it 🙂

Joe Corti gets 2020 going with his debut All Night Long 7 hour set at Corsica Studios on January 17th. It was at that same 500 cap club, just one year ago, that China White, his event brand and label was born.  Why Corsica? Says Joe, ‘I love everything about the venue! the small rooms, the heavy sound system, the people who run it… I waited a while to get into Corsica and now a year on, it embodies the label and party brand perfectly, so where better to kick start this new year!’
His events have transcended the vibrant London scene to become cult favourites around the UK. He’s featured guests such as Brame & Hamo, Marquis Hawkes, Leo Pol, Cody Currie and more, becoming a tastemaker’s tastemaker.  The all-nighter will celebrate and mark the brand’s successful first year and herald a series of eagerly awaited releases and gigs for the much- and deservedly- hyped London-based Corti.  Be it on the dancefloor or through the speakers, Joe will deliver a unique but zeitgeist-grabbing mix of soulful disco, chunky house grooves and an uplifting infectious vibe.  Having burst on to London’s dance music scene with a bang in 2018, embarking on a tour of the states and releasing three pieces of hedonistic dance floor indulgence, then birthing China White, he’s been planning this celebration for some time. ‘The start of the new year felt like the perfect opportunity. It’s hard to fully express yourself in a couple of hours so playing all night long will give China White & Joe Corti fans a much better idea of who I am, where I come from and more importantly where I want to take things in 2020 and beyond.’ Joe Corti plays All Night Long @ Corsica Studios on January 17th  – Get tickets here: http://bit.ly/2QwI9Cs
