Guest Post: 5 IMPORTANT THINGS TO BE A SUCCESSFUL DJ IN 2018

by the partae April 11, 2018
written by the partae

Are you a newbie Dj who’s having a hard time to lock some shows? Or a veteran Dj who’s struggling to compete with uprising talents? If you are any of the above, I feel you. I’ve been there myself and found a solution that helped me boosted my career.

We are now living in the age of digital world. As you may know, social media is playing a big part of our lives. We spend more time on our mobile phones checking news, trends, friends and even our loved ones. My question is, do you use social media on its full potential? We often overlooked what’s in front of us. And the truth is, you can use social media to boost your entire career just like the famous Djs do.

I’ve used it myself and it gave me the best results. In just 7 years, as an ordinary Asian Dj, I’ve played in big events like Amsterdam Dance Event in the Netherlands, Thingyan Festival in Myanmar with Laidback Luke & Don Diablo, having an International Dj Residency in Illuzion, Thailand (#81 Top 100 Club in the World) and signed in Deorro’s Imprint, Panda Funk.

So, what are the things you need to do in order to achieve improvement in your career?

I’ve listed these 5 important things that you need, to be successful in 2018.

1. Branding

2. Skills

3. Marketing

4. Attitude

5. Consistency

1. Branding

Branding is a marketing strategy that involves creating a unique name and image — often using a logo and/or tag line — in order to establish a presence in the consumer’s mind to attract and keep customers.

Why should you care about branding? Because these days, everyone will Google you or look at your Facebook Page before they hire you to perform a show or invest in your new or existing venture. Any time you interact with people — online or off — your brand will matter.

Famous Dj brands who uses head gears like Marshmello & DeadMau5, cake-throwing Dj Steve Aoki or sexy female djs like Dj Soda are the best examples of a good branding which paid off really well. Know what your brand would look like, your fashion, that is relevant to your music style.

A successful brand plan must identify consumer targets, the demographic a business needs to support its brand. To entice these people to support you, a brand must have a main message, which explains why you can do things that others cannot. Lastly, a brand plan should include strategies for promotion that gets its targeted consumers to take action.

Most importantly, branding is about emotions and how your customers and clients feel about you. Marketing is about numbers. Both are important, but in today’s climate, how you make people feel can make or break your business.

The more time, effort and resources you spend on your brand plan, the more likely you are to create a sustainable positive brand that resonates with your customer base, grows your influence and impacts your bottom line.

2. Skills

Are you a scratch DJ? Do you produce music? They say, everyone can be a DJ. Yes, that’s why you have to have a different set of skills in order to stand out from a saturated industry. This is the main message that you will have to show people in order for them to support you. It makes you stand out from other Djs because you can do things that others cannot.

3. Marketing

So you can play music and can produce tracks, question is, do you have a gig? I see a lot of underrated Djs who are really good in their field but lacks exposure. They focused too much on enhancing their skills they forgot what is needed for a professional Dj career. You see, you have to treat a professional Dj career like a business. And any business would require a good marketing plan. A good marketing plan for a brand is the best method to a successful Dj career. You have to market yourself like a pro so clients will treat you like a pro and book you as a pro.

Running a professional DJ service takes more than simply buying your equipment, building a website, and opening for business. To be successful you need to put together a strategic marketing plan that will help you to effectively market your business to potential clients.

A marketing plan usually runs between a year and five years and developing one takes time, preparation and money. However, if your marketing plan is sound and effective it will be well worth the time and money you invest in it.

Get an agent or manager to handle you, but most of them will only manage you if you’re profitable. If you can’t find someone to handle you, its better to do it yourself. The cheapest way to market yourself is to do it online, build a website, send out emails and create profiles in social media platforms for social proof.

4. Attitude

Most of you focus on the first 3 things I’ve mentioned above. But you shouldn’t forget that having a good attitude and work ethic is important too. As an entertainer, people will always talk about you, the good and the bad. Its best to always keep your cool and be mindful of things that will burn down your career. Take good care of your reputation and practice good work ethics. Be on time, be nice to other Djs, don’t bash, don’t hate, etc.

5. Consistency

As most successful people say, consistency is key. This is true. People could easily forget you and your achievements as new-comers can have their attention. You want to be relevant on today’s latest music, trends, etc. It is important to be consistent on what you do.

Release produced tracks, film a scratch routine, post funny Instagram stories, etc. You need to post consistently to be visible to your fans and potential clients, new or old. This will remind them about you whenever they need a Dj on their upcoming events. You have to keep your online presence active at all times.

There you have it. I hope this article helped you in any way. Let me know down below the comments if you want to add something or discuss more things related to this topic. I will post more informative articles and tutorial videos in the near future on how to improve your Dj career. Thank you for time reading my first blog. Peace!

P.S. If you need help on social media marketing, I’ve created a business plan designed for Djs only. Please email us at sorastatus@gmail.com and we will give you a free evaluation and provide you the best solution.

Meet Paria, The Iranian-Norwegian singer who is not afraid to stand out from the crowd.

by the partae April 10, 2018
written by the partae

The 21 year old singer-songwriter stole the hearts of Norwegian music lovers with her bouncy single «91» last year, But it’s been her music style that made the Norwegian Radio notice her.  Paria is breaking the rules of the new female artists of today’s music industry in Norway with mixing hip-hop, RnB and Pop and adding some confident vocals, and she makes music that not many Norwegian female artists dare to make these days. Now her single «91» has been played on radio (both in Norway and UK) since it came out despite the fact that it was her debut single.

I can’t believe I can just turn on the radio and it’s a chance that my song will come on, It has always been my dream which now came true, it’s unbelievable! I really appreciate people liking and listening to 91.

She’s now coming out with a new single that will low-key blow your mind. «Low Blow» is the title of her new single.

Low Blow is inspired of Paria’s lifestyle before she committed to be a full-time artist.

«I remember when I was 17 I moved to Oslo on my own and I still was in high school but needed to work to pay my bills and since I was a student and a teenager no-one would give me a job, so I worked at a lot of part-time jobs, and the last cafe I worked in got closed and I lost my job. Then I realized that I am wasting my time with jobs I hate and jobs that will never make me happy nor successful In the future, so I decided to make music my job and be an artist, and that’s basically all I’m saying with «Low Blow», I’m saying hell no to Low Blow and yes to working hard and chasing your dreams»

Rising Pop singer-songwriter Paria delivers an important message through a fun and wavy beat and a chores where she explains as «the chores everybody can release some tension with.

Hivern Discs sub-label HVNX announces Zodiac Free Arts Club aka Argy concept album – ‘Structures + Codes’ is out May 25th

by the partae April 10, 2018
written by the partae

Following his debut album ‘Floating World’ via Permanent Vacation in 2011, Zodiac Free Arts Club, the Krautrock/Kosmische tribute side project of the Greek producer Argy, is releasing his second output  which is inspired by the work of the painter Constantin Xenakis, reflecting his vision after several meetings in Paris and Athens since 2012. Each track of the album corresponds to a painting by Xenakis, translating its intricate shapes and patterns into spirit-lifting compositions filled with elliptic arpeggios, repetitive drum machines and esoteric melodies in proper kosmische manner.

Hivern Discs started HVNX in 2016 as a sub-label for vinyl conceptual EPs and mini-albums featuring the most experimental music spectrum of the label’s direction that has released works from the likes of Inga Mauer and Simon Haydo.

NEW SINGLE FROM DREAM-POP DUO RAVENNAS “Washed Away”

by the partae April 10, 2018
written by the partae
Seattle dream pop duo, Ravennas, releases of “Washed Away,” a upbeat song that captures the transition to spring. Ben Grant and Paul Dutton have been making music together since grade school, from drum lessons to junior high jazz band, cultivating the kind of collaborative chemistry that cannot be taught. Dutton’s theory expertise and instrumental mastery elevate Grant’s guttural, artistic instinct; the result is a boldly textured audial tapestry guaranteed to take them far.
The song, which was co-produced by the Seattle-based band with the assistance of acclaimed artist, DoM (also known as Dominic Cournoyer), is powered by breezy electronic atmospherics and a mellow pacing. DoM also produced the duo’s first single “Meet in a Garden.” DoM is re-emerging and was recently under the spotlight in Noisey. The notable alum of Pitchfork’s Staff Picks,Spin’s 20 Best Songs of Summer and Rolling Stone’s Top 10 College Radio Picks who has opened for Ratatat and been re-mixed by Gucci Mane. Longtime fans, Grant and Dutton noticed DoM’s musical dormancy and reached out as optimistic fans, only to become ecstatic collaborators. Dutton explained,”DoM has a profound ability to follow his instincts and started shaping the song, shortening different sections and vibing the song out more so that it wasn’t so clean and dry.”
Grant elaborated, “If you would have told Paul and I two years ago that we would release a song produced by one of our favorite artists, DoM, we probably would have laughed. Now it’s a reality and that’s really empowering. One of my takeaways from all this is that everyone should listen to their instincts and take action to make things happen.”
DoM said of the process, “I have ghostwritten, produced and co-written for other artists in the past, but it makes it much more fun when the people you are working with are chill and know what they want. The process was great.”

Felix Cartal Encourages Listeners to Put Down the Phones in New Track “Faces” ft. Veronica

by the partae April 10, 2018
written by the partae

In a world where meaningful conversations often occur over texts and social media rules our perceptions, Felix Cartal and singer Veronica‘s new track “Faces” is a poignant PSA to focus on real, human connection. With its essence of resplendent melodies, stirring vocals and of course a little groove, the song is both a warning and a hopeful message to young people who feel insecure when faced with a raw in-person interaction. “Faces is about getting over our fear and remembering that we’re all human, and that trying to connect with someone on a real, in-person level is important,” says Felix of the inspiration behind the track. Veronica echoes his sentiment, saying “We want to remind anyone listening that there’s nothing more important than the people we surround ourselves with, so don’t hide from the faces.” “Faces” is the newest single from Felix‘s forthcoming album and is out now on Physical Presents.

With his dreamy, melodic and yet dance-floor friendly sound, Felix Cartal has established himself as a force to be reckoned with in modern dance music. 2017 proved to be a monumental year for the producer, who was included in Billboard‘s “13 Dance Artists Who Dominated 2017” feature and whose Spotify channel has over 75 million streams. Felix‘s appeal lies in his ability to convey complex emotions through his music, like the hopeful angst of “Get What You Give,” leaving listeners with a positive emotional catharsis. To this effect, “Get What You Give” has soared to the #1 spot on Sirius XM Chill and the Hype Machine and rapidly climbed the US and international charts, becoming a Certified Gold record in Canada and named one of Billboard‘s “50 Best Dance/Electronic Songs of 2017.” The track recently earned nominations at the prestigious Canadian Juno Awards, for Dance Recording of the Year as well as Producer of the Year. Shortly after, Felix released “Hold Tight,” the swoon-worthy B side track to “Get What You Give,” which also received support from Billboard and experienced similar success. With such immense recent successes, we can’t wait to see what’s next for Felix Cartal. Catch him live during his new residency at the famed Drai’s Beach Club in Las Vegas, which kicks off on April 8th!

Having formed in 1991, No Fun At All quickly became one of the torchbearers of European punk rock. Following the release of 1994’s No Straight Angels, the band found themselves headlining stages all over the world. Through until 2001, they continued to tour all over the world in support of 1995’s Out Of Bounds,  1997’s The Big Knockover and 2000’s State Of Flow records, before calling it a day on the band.

After a show offer in the Spring of 2004, the band found that enjoyment and love again for playing live that had been lost whilst relentlessly touring throughout the 90s. With rekindled enthusiasm, No Fun At All committed themselves to a light touring schedule over the years between 2004 and 2017, including supporting the 2009 release, Lowrider, that the band self-released through Beat ’em Down Records.

2016 saw a lineup shuffle, with two long-time members of the band deciding to take a step back. Following a band meeting in a Vienna restaurant, they decided that it was the time to step it up once again. They recruited Stefan Bratt, formerly of Atlas Losing Grip, and Fredrik Eriksson, formerly of Twopointeight to fill the empty bassist and guitarist positions.

With fresh enthusiasm, the new line up jumped straight into the rehearsal room to work on the new material for Grit. Alongside a number of shows and festivals throughout the summer and fall of 2017 the band put together the new 12 tracks and hit the studio with Mathias Färm from Millencolin as co-producer in his wonderful Soundlab Studio.

Grit will be released on Vinyl, CD and Digital through Bird Attack Records on 13th April 2018

One of France’s finest underground producers Bambounou returns to Ausralia!

by the partae April 9, 2018
written by the partae
Bambounou

Tour Dates

Friday 4th May: The Grand Poobah, Hobart
Saturday 5th May: Revolver Upstairs, Melbourne
Friday 11th May: Geisha, Perth
Saturday 12th May: Sugar, Adelaide
Friday 18th May: Secret Show, TBC
Saturday 19th May: Chinese Laundry, Sydney
Sunday 20th May: Byron Bay Brewery, Byron Bay

A key player within the European dance scene, Frenchman Bambounou initially gained his fame through his numerous releases on the esteemed (but now defunct) 50Weapons record label. Not releasing any new music since his 2015 EP with Margaret Dygas ‘See You Soon / Popular Religions‘, his intricate and experimental DJ sets have been the driving force behind his growing popularity… but that’s all about to change.

Bambounou recently announced he had been spending plenty of time in the studio, stating “I’ve been working hard on my sound these past few years. I’m really stoked to announce that my next EP ‘Parametr Perkusja’ will be released on Don’t DJ’s DISK on May 25th”, he also linked the b-side of the EP, a jungle infused weapon ‘VVVVV’. Returning to Australia for seven dates, this is easily his biggest Australian tour to date.

Jeremy Guindo AKA Bambounou, is one of only two Frenchmen to have worked with the legendary, but now defunct Berlin-based label 50 Weapons (run by Modeselektor).

The producer of over 7 EPs and 2 albums (2012’s ‘Orbiting‘ and 2015’s ‘Centrum‘, both on 50 Weapons), Bambounou rapidly announced himself as one of the major acts in the French, and European, house and techno scenes. His productions, widely inspired by the sounds emanating from Chicago, Detroit and London, have found favour with the globe’s more discerning selectors.

In March 2014, he released a remix EP of his latest cuts (‘Ignition/Take It Out On Me‘) featuring new versions from French Fries (Paris-based ClekClekBoom label’s bossman) and Laurent Garnier (the other Frenchman that used to be involved with 50 Weapons). He has also collaborated with French Fries on Jimmy Edgar’s Ultramajic to produce the hotter than hot ‘What’s Up Evan‘.  With upcoming gigs at events like HYTE in Ibiza, and festivals including France’s Nuits Sonoros, Bambounou is set to take his stock even further this year.

KATZ debut EP ‘Waterfall’ out now!

by the partae April 9, 2018
written by the partae
Melbourne’s Katz has released his debut EP Waterfall via Dot Dash / Remote Control. The EP features some of Australia’s leading lights in the electronic scene – Japanese Wallpaper, Charlie Lim, Woodes,Fractures and Lanks – all either feature or collaborated on the debut.
Learning piano from the age of 4, Katz cut his teeth leading jazz ensembles around Melbourne, including his critically acclaimed quintet. While he would regularly lend his skills to studio sessions on the side, it wasn’t until he found himself sitting in on friends’ electronica projects that he decided to try making it himself. It was here that Katz began laying foundations for his debut output.

Recorded largely in his Collingwood home studio and co-produced with Simon Lam (Kllo, I’lls, Nearly Oratorio), Katz’s debut EP announces his expansion from jazz artist to deft purveyor of hazy, heavy-lidded electronica. Over five songs brimming with analogue synths, downbeat electric piano, chattering percussion and smart arrangements, a suite of guest vocalists perfectly attune to Katz’s dreamy melancholia, and pour their soul.

“On some level jazz will always influence the music I make,” says Katz of his debut. “It’s something I try to keep at bay when writing pop music, but I’ll regularly draw on jazz sensibilities and instrument choices.  Equally inspirational is the music my friends are making.”

Lead single and EP opener ‘Hollow’ was co-written with Gab Strum, aka Japanese Wallpaper, and features Singaporean/Australian singer/songwriter Charlie Lim on vocals. A frequent collaborator withKatz, the track rises on fluttering arpeggios and tinkling bells, backing Lim’s smoky vocals raking through the ashes of a regret.

That theme holds throughout the EP. Melbourne producer Woodes’ dusty voice lends an ache to the twilight haze of ‘Spinning Out’; ‘Waterfall’ muse on a relationship disconnect; Fractures finds some solace on the neo-soul-tinged slow jam ‘Cipher’; and ‘Floating’ is a chopped-up, pensive instrumental collaboration with Lanks.

While the EP charts Katz’s evolution from jazz musician to accomplished songwriter and producer in his own right, the project is as much a nod to its creator’s encouraging surrounds. “My music has a lot to do with the Melbourne electronic music scene,” says Katz. “I come from an instrumental, computer-free background so I’m still riding a steep learning curve. But I’m finding that really cool ideas can come from disruption to the usual workflow.”

GOAT GIRL self-titled debut album out now!

Praise for Goat Girl

“19 incredible tracks to satisfy any hungry fan.” – The Music

“It’s fantastically alive, electrifying and witty stuff, the sound of something fresh and thrilling occurring.” – Q ★★★★

“Funny, raging, unpredictable and electric, this is a record that feels alive.”
–  8/10 Line of Best Fit

“Goat Girl’s vision is as unique as an oily fingerprint, their confidence dizzying, and richly justified.”
– Mojo ★★★★

“The excellent debut album from Goat Girl is a sticky smudged love letter to south London.”
– The Quietus Lead Review

Goat Girl have released their debut album Goat Girl via Rough Trade Records / Remote Control Records. The album was produced by Dan Carey (Kate Tempest / Franz Ferdinand) in his South London studio in the Autumn of 2017.

Across 19 tracks in 40 minutes, Goat Girl’s self-titled debut creates a half fantasy world out of a very dirty ugly city reality. In the groups words: “Simply put, it’s an album that comes from growing up in London and the first-hand experience of our city’s devolution. We wanted to think of it as this place seen not necessarily just through our eyes, but someone who can’t get past the abnormalities and strange happenings that exist in our city. We think this gives the freedom lyrically and musically to explore unspoken truths and emotions that we all as humans feel.”

This world is populated by creeps and liars, lovers, dreamers and wonderful lunatics. It’s a very English album – sharp-eyed observations like The Kinks, louche rage like The Slits – but it’s also full of swampy swaggering guitars and Lottie’s filthy drawl. “It wasn’t exactly intentional to have this warped country sound, but I think that was initially what we were all drawn to and inspired by, bands that existed in a lo-fi, dissonant, scratchy context.”

Goat Girl are part of a burgeoning, close-knit South London scene that includes Shame, Bat-Bike, Madonnatron, Horsey, Sorry and many more. The bands are all based in and around the Windmill in Brixton.

Goat Girl have built up a strong live following over the last year, headlining their own tours and supporting The Fall, Fat White Family & Parquet Courts.

CLIENT LIAISON Diplomatic Immunity Remixed out now

by the partae April 9, 2018
written by the partae

Today, Client Liaison are thrilled to announce the release of Diplomatic Immunity Remixed – out now via Dot Dash / Remote Control Records. The duo have enlisted an all Australian dignitary to celebrate the release of their debut record, with highlights including ‘Wild Life,‘ ‘Off White Limousine‘ & ARIA Gold accredited single ‘World Of Our Love.’ The remix album follows Client Liaison’s three ARIA Award nominations, and their winning of J Award for Australian Music Video of the Year.

Of the album Monte Morgan shares: “considering remix culture usually pertains to singles and multiple remixes of one song, we thought we’d put together a whole album that can be listened to from beginning to end. It’s incredible for us to hear artists and friends we love re-appropriating our sound in so many different ways and genres.”

That the album boasts an entirely Australian lineup was a natural evolution of the release, as Monte explains “…we only noticed halfway into the process that everyone was Australian. It was a really nice surprise to know that this presented itself instinctively.” The result is a fostering of a musical community, a true representation of what Client Liaison offers to the world.

The album features remixes by Dreems, Panama, Ariela Jacobs, Luke Million, Northeast Party House, Christopher Wiseman, Solo Dan, Shouse, Oliver Tank, Muki, and Ben Browning.

The quality of the collaboration of artists shines through in their respective remixes. Tour-mate Luke Million shares: “After traveling the country with the guys on their 22 date Diplomatic Immunity tour, I got to know them and their music pretty well and experience the world of Client Liaison. When working on my take of ‘Off White Limousine,’ I drew inspiration from early 2000s sample based “French Touch / Nu Disco” – the likes of Alan Braxe and Daft Punk. I crafted a 70’s funk groove and then chopped it up to form the basis of the remix.”

Melbourne’s Ariela Jacobs touches on her remix of ‘A Foreign Affair’: “My initial interpretation of ‘A Foreign Affair’ was quite dark. I had that vision of wanting to be with someone unattainable – that mystery of grasping onto something quite intangible. When I was asked to rework this track, I immediately knew I wanted to paint something quite haunting.”

Producer Dreems sheds light on his remix experience of ‘Canberra Won’t Be Calling Tonight’: “Canberra is approximately 286 km from Sydney, where I sculpted this remix whilst on a diet of discarded boogie boards and dehydrated kale. When played backwards this remix re-imagines Australian history, where the jellyfish took to land and marketed themselves as the real crown rulers.”

These remixes are fantasy. Which is what makes them true. Diplomatic Immunity in collaboration with new artists, and with you.

Praise for Client Liaison – Diplomatic Immunity

“Diplomatic Immunity is among the best pop records Australia will get this year… the songs are undeniable.” – The Guardian, ★★★★

“Diplomatic Immunity [possesses] glossy pop smarts, surprising collaborations (Tina Arena on A Foreign Affair), long-time set-list mainstays (Hotel Stay) and welcome new additions, such as pastel funk workout Off White Limousine. They successfully return investment based on their previous promise.” – The Age, ★★★☆

“At once irresistibly stupid and very, very clever, it’s well worth the wait.” – Rolling Stone, ★★★★

“Client Liaison’s debut LP Diplomatic Immunity is well worth putting on the company card” – Tone Deaf (9/10)

“Clean, reverbed vocals rise up over pillowy clouds of vaporwave synth and a rich, tropical rhythm section propels everything. Strong songwriting is on display here as well…” – The Music
