Currently paying rent on Gadigal land but Ngunnawal ALL DAY BABY
How did you first start playing music?
My Dad and his brother had a duo that would gig around town and rehearse at our house. As a determined 6 year old I’d casually slip in a third harmony to whatever they were singing until my parents got the hint that I wanted in and haven’t looked back since.
What’s been happening recently?
Like, heaps. After COVID stripped me naked of everything I thought I was born to do, I’ve been searching under every rock and dumpling for my purpose.. I’ve just finished up with one of the biggest musicals in the world and adjusting to real life again, re-figuring out my sound (again), trying to decide if music really is for me, and trying to learn how to cook a steak properly, so my hands are FULL rn.
Your latest single ‘Possessive’ is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting?
I had been listening to a lot of Ari Lennox and Mahalia, and tryna get well acquainted with the women of R&B at the moment. I’d also just started dating the best man I’ve ever come across and was quickly realising I’d probably straight up marry him and how reluctant I would be to ever share him soo wrote a cute little diddy to let any other keen biddies know what’s what.
How did you go about writing the single?
Always try finding a strong hook – you want it to stick in people brains, and you actually enjoy singing it over and over again if/when it goes viral – so that’s always the hardest part. Once we nailed that, the verses just started running out of my mouth and my producer and I were in the zone. Bit stressful because once you start strong there’s pressure to keep spitting fire but I think we did pretty well.
Where and when did you record/produce/master and who with?
Produced and mixed by Kay Ansah on Ngunnawal country and mastered by Matt ‘Xiro’ Fioravanti on Gadigal land.
How are you developing your sound and image as a new artist?
Honestly I’ve stopped trying to figure it out and decided it’s whatever comes to my brain and sticks. Humans are too colourful to pick one shade so I’m gonna be all of them. If your brain needs boxes to tick, try to imagine the beautiful rainbow children of R&B, Gospel, Jazz, Pop, Soul and Country.
Who are you listening to at the moment?
Mahalia, Lucky Daye, H.E.R and my parents telling me they want grandkids. On repeat.
What do you like to do away from music?
Still trying to figure that out too. I was never one for hobbies because I thought it distracted me from “the dream” but now I think that’s dumb so I’m trying to read fantasy books, avoid Instagram, and cook yum tiktok recipes.
What’s planned for 2022?
This year I plan on being a vlogging guru, land a Netflix series, buy a Tesla, make money online (whatever that means), release music I love without caring who listens, and be a mama. Or at least plant all the right seeds to bear these fruit in the next five years.
Favourite food and place to hangout?
Japanese fusion, gimme expensive uncooked fish and salty oysters with lemon and anything with rice 5eva.
