ZABO Brings The Heat With Hard-Hitting, Vocal Bass Track “Flow,” Featuring Singer/Songwriter C.D

by the partae April 25, 2022
written by the partae

Artists: ZABO
Title: Flow ft. C.D
Label: Self-release

Download / Stream

Canadian bass/mid-tempo artist ZABO is back with another hard-hitting release titled “Flow,” featuring his fellow Canadian, singer/songwriter C.D. True to the viral sensation’s signature style, this new track takes no prisoners with a foundation of basslines that seem to stab right for the heart, complemented with grating mechanical synths and haunting vocals that add the perfect feminine twist. “Flow” is far from the easy-going melodic gem that its name might imply – it’s made for headbanging and booty-shaking on the dance floor, and you better believe ZABO will be playing it out this spring and summer. It’s yet another example of how his infectious music continues to transcend international boundaries and break genre molds.

Dan Szabo knew his love for electronic music was everlasting at a young age. He became fascinated with music composition, which led him to study audio and recording technology at the well-known OIART in London, Ontario. This led to the development of his music persona “ZABO,” which was heavily influenced by the Toronto bass community. ZABO became an international sensation when his music went viral on TikTok and Douyin, making him well known in the US and China. His single “Breathe” was the top electronic music song on TikTok in 2021, having amassed 13.5M plays on Spotify, while “Drown” has been streamed internationally over 1B times across all platforms. At this early stage in his career, ZABO has a lot of exciting news and music up his sleeve, so keep an eye out for more music coming soon.

JNR.

by the partae April 22, 2022
written by the partae

Where are you currently based?

We’re scattered around Sydney, but we work out of our studio in Marrickville.

How did you first start playing music?

We were all drawn to music at a young age. Somehow that accidentally brought us together when we all took lessons at the same music school. We’ve been inseparable ever since.

What’s been happening recently?

We’re just all very stoked about this release. We’ve been super busy working with a lot of different artists as producers but are going to be getting in the studio this week to finish the next batch of singles.

How does it feel to have debuted as a band?

Like we’ve been keeping a secret for years and finally everyone knows. We were just kind of waiting for the right moment and the right song that would define us at the beginning. Now that we’ve made our debut it feels like we can go anywhere from here.

Your single ‘Remember’ is out now, how did this track come about?

This one is about my family, and particularly my granddad. When he started losing his memory, I got very introspective and themes of time, love, family and friendship just kind of blurted on the pages. The song doesn’t sound much like the meaning, but I kind of like it that way.

Where and when did you record/produce/master?

There are a lot of elements that we kept from the original demo that I recorded in my room mid last year. We recorded Max’s guitars and did some extra production at Nico’s house and mixed it at the studio in Marrickville.

How did you approach the recording process?

It was one of those tracks that didn’t take very long to finish. The bones of the track were already there, we just had to bring it to where we were hearing it in our heads. That part took a lot longer, we spent a lot of time in the studio tweaking the tiniest things.

Who or what influences your sound?

Thematically, we pull our influence from everyday problems, mental health, love, and relationships. We try to embody a mood brought upon by the lyrics in our production choices. But our influences range from Bon Iver, The 1975, BROCKHAMPTON, Tame Impala… there’s so much out there.

How has your previous music pursuits/bands etc led to the formation of JNR.?

We’ve technically been in the same band since high school. We’ve changed genres a few times as we’ve grown – but we’re in such a great place musically at the moment. I feel like we’ve found our place, though that might grow as we do.

What’s your plans for future releases?

We’ve got singles upon singles coming this year. We want to release as often as we can without burning out. There’s so many songs we’ve been sitting on that we can’t wait to show you.

Please tell us about the dynamic in the band between each member:

We’re all best friends. It’s hard to define that because we’ve been best friends for close to 10 years. We’re always there for one another and always will be – I guess that’s the dynamic.

Being a band of producers, how has this lent itself to the music production/creation process?

It’s really interesting. We all have our own ear and our own way of doing things, so it’s really helpful when we’re all in the room to see how other people listen to your work. Sometimes we’ll start a song from scratch in the room together, other times one of us has a fully completed song that just needs the others to get their hands on it. It depends on the song and what we want to work on.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

Lizzy McAlpine’s new record is great. We’ve also been loving COIN’s new album. There’s so much good music being released now, this answer could go on forever.

What’s planned for 2022?

More music. More growth. More jnr.

PRAISE FOR MIRROR II

“Remarkably catchy and immersive out of the gate.”
Stereogum (Album of the Week)

“Mirror II, the group’s third album, is its most confident yet”
The New Yorker

“Mirror II offers a sighing, spectral alternative to the mess of our world”
Pitchfork

“These are assured, mature songs bursting with creativity.”
NME Australia

“The Goon Sax reflect their innate talent on Mirror II”
Newcastle Herald

“Pure heaven.”
Tone Deaf

Today, Brisbane trio The Goon Sax have released a deluxe digital edition of their third album Mirror II.

Already more or less perfect, the record returns to us newly refreshed with four unreleased songs, including two album outtakes, a demo of ‘In the Stone,’ and a cover of Len’s 1999 top-ten hit, ‘Steal My Sunshine‘.

The Goon Sax have also hit the road opening for Snail Mail on dates across North America in April/May. The trio return to Australia for Rising Festival in Melbourne on June 2 (plus more Australian dates to be announced soon). Then they rejoin Snail Mail for UK/Europe dates in June, followed by a huge North American tour supporting Spoon and Interpol in August/September.

Since forming in high school, Brisbane band The Goon Sax— the trio of Riley Jones, Louis Forster, and James Harrison, best friends who take turns writing, singing, and playing each instrument— have been celebrated for their kinetic homemade pop.

Mirror II is a new beginning: a multi-dimensional eclectic journey of musical craftsmanship that moves from disco to folk to no wave with staggering cohesion. Gone are the first-person insecurities of their school days — they’ve been made more expansive, more universal, and more weird.

CryJaxx

by the partae April 22, 2022
written by the partae

Who is CryJaxx?

CryJaxx: “Well, CryJaxx is a DJ and record production duo consisting of Mario Malja and Serafin Frroku. We are both 23 years old and recently have graduated. Serafin graduated in Business Administration while Mario graduated in Business Informatics. Yet, now we are both studying a Master’s Degree, currently based in Tirana, Albania.”

How did you first start making music?

CryJaxx: “We started to make music together in 2012 under a different alias. That year the EDM scene was going crazy. We were listening to a lot of music and got intrigued on how we can make electronic music ourselves. Watched a lot of videos and tutorials online and finally felt ready to download the software and start taking this to the next level.

In the first few years we were mostly focused on practicing and learning about music production and discovering what we can do best. In late 2015 we re-branded under CryJaxx and started releasing a lot of music, different genres and lots of exploring. 2019 was a good year for us because after our release of “Who Would’ve Thought” on Tribal Trap, we started DJ-ing in festivals and had a big tour. We both started young and making music was a very intriguing way for us to express our thoughts and feelings.”

What’s been happening recently?

CryJaxx: “Recently a lot has been happening! Our track “Candy Shop” went viral. The track was everywhere: Instagram, TikTok, Facebook and a lot of radio stations. That track was, and still is, a big success we achieved. Also, we played at Pop Art Festival in Tirana and it was insane! We produced the soundtrack to a fashion TV show here in Albania and also been spending a lot of time in the studio working on a lot of new music and some big collaborations. Recently we’ve been working very closely with the label Tribal Trap on releasing our music and have a lot of plans for the future with them. In June we are playing again in Tirana at Colourday Festival and looking forward to that. We are so humbled by all the support we’ve received.”

You’ve recently covered legendary Hip-Hop classic, “In Da Club” by 50 Cent, how did you come to choose this track and who did you work with?

CryJaxx: “Ah yes, “In Da Club” is, with no doubt, a legendary track that we always loved to listen and party with. The track was blowing up everywhere when we were little kids and basically it was stuck in our heads for years. Last year we released a cover of “Candy Shop” and right away were thinking to do the same for “In Da Club”, we knew this one had to be the next single to get a reboot from us.

But at first, we wanted to see how people enjoyed this new version of another legendary song and everyone loved it! So, we immediately started working on it with our good friends, Noise Affairs. For the vocals, we had to get Junior Charles (who did the vocals for “Candy Shop” too), and shaped it into what it is today. It’s been a long process finishing this track because we wanted to be the best it could, but at the end it was a fun process and we are all very happy with what we have today: a legendary classic with a modern twist.”

What new music do you have on the way?

CryJaxx: “We do have a ton of new music on the way. A track every 3 weeks to be exact, and all these tracks will be released by Tribal Trap. After “In Da Club”, the next single to be released is “Lollipop” – a cover of Lil Wayne. This cover has that CryJaxx modern twist, but not so similar to our last covers. This one is a bit different, a bit softer and gives you the feeling of intimacy. You all can listen to “Lollipop” on May 13th.”

Who are you listening to at the moment?

CryJaxx: “At the moment we are listening to many different sounds. Would say we both listening to David Guetta a lot, to Tiesto, Diplo, The Kid Laroi, Jack Harlow, Ava Max and a ton of old school music. We also like classical music.”

What do you like to do away from music?

CryJaxx: “Away from music we like to do a lot of things to keep our body and mind healthy. We both go the gym and train, sometimes we play soccer with our friends and other times we just like to hangout to catch up with friends and family. We like to spend quality time with our families with that little free time we have. Also, our studies play a role in what we do away from music but still, we love to have music everywhere.”

What’s planned for the remainder of 2022?

CryJaxx: “For the upcoming months of 2022 we’ve planned a lot of music to be released. Currently working on few festivals and shows for the summer and yeah, we are filming some music videos too. 2022 has a lot of work for us to do, but we are definitely ready to get into that.”

Favourite food and place to hang-out?

CryJaxx: “Food..hmm…we love all kinds of food but lately been eating a lot of Asian food. Favourite place to hangout is the studio haha. Besides that, we love nature and there is a lake near Tirana where we go to chill out when we have some free time.”

JUST A GENT DELIVERS HIS STRONGEST MATERIAL YET WITH LONG AWAITED NEW STUDIO ALBUM PLANET OASIS ON TOUR IN JUNE

by the partae April 21, 2022
written by the partae

In the four years that have passed since his acclaimed Stories To Tell project, Just A Gent has continued to solidify his presence as one of Australia’s premier producers and musicians. Entering the game young and quickly snatching attention of audiences and industry alike in Australia and abroad, Just A Gent refused to let early success pause his creative hustle.

The album was a natural step in the evolution of Just A Gent as an artist and a fitting touchstone in his career, which is already littered with impressive achievements. The release of Stories To Tell has racked up over 20 million streams, kicking Just A Gent’s overall streaming numbers up significantly (currently he enjoys over 200 million on Spotify alone).

It’s this determination and undeterred vision that has kept his spirits high in recent years, and has brought him to now: embracing a whole new creative chapter, sharing it with fans today in new album Planet Oasis.
Across 2021 and 2022, fans have heard the album teased with the release of popular singles like ‘Who Would Have Thought (ft. Arno Faraji)’, ‘Sleeptalking (ft. Greta Stanley)’, ‘Lightspeed’, ‘Trip To Mars (ft. Sammi Constantine)’ and most recently ‘Don’t Wait For Me (ft. Lani Rose)’. The tracks highlight Just A Gent’s natural ear for this sort of music; expertly weaving and arranging electronic patterns, fused with elements of hip hop, dance and stunning work.

The album, recorded by Just A Gent in Mindaribba on Wonnarua country (Maitland, NSW), proved to be more than a passion project as the guest vocalist and collaborator list began to grow. His vision fused with the individuality of each guest, lending new and unique flavour to each track.

“Creating this record spanned over five years. It’s changed a lot over the course of that time. I’ve sat on various versions of the album but felt this version was the strongest.

Most of the tracks on Planet Oasis are collaborations with some of my favorite talents from around the globe. Some of my best mates in the scene like Lani Rose, Jacknife & Samsaruh. It just felt right to be working with people I cherish and admire everything they do. I worked with Jon Hrubesch on the artworks, he has helped tell my story for the past eight years, his mind and creativity is unmatched. Wiese.world was the other leading hand in terms of visuals, we have also worked together for years and he is the animation GOAT.

It feels so good to finally be able to share this with you and I hope it takes you to places you have never been before.”
JUST A GENT

An album like Planet Oasis arrives at a perfect time where music fans are itching to experience this sort of music in its natural habitat: on a sweaty dancefloor or out in a massive festival setting.

Songs like ‘Nova’ and ‘Island Fever’ (fan favourites, both released in 2021) are perfect examples of the album’s ability to make the listener want to turn up and party. And yet, Planet Oasis offers different levels of engagement. ‘Out Of Order’ goes heavy with glitchy, industrial goodness, while title track ‘Planet Oasis’ (also the album’s final single) is a Just A Gent master move.

A formidable force in Australian production, Just A Gent once again proves his place and legacy with an album like Planet Oasis – we’re invited to take a trip to it.

PRAISE FOR JUST A GENT

“The collaboration with Western Australian up and coming hip hop firebrand Arno Faraji sees the two enforcers meet in the middle of their distinct sonic worlds. The execution is perfect…”
Purple Sneakers (‘Who Would Have Thought’, 2022)

“Jacob aka Just A Gent is living up to the moniker! This one is so refined and classy! Caviar beats.”
Triple J Unearthed, Dave Ruby Howe (‘Don’t Wait For Me’, 2022)

“This is the ‘Super Rich Kids’ of 2022 and I love it.”
Triple J, Declan Byrne (‘Who Would Have Thought’, 2022)

“Magic! Swept up in it all.”
Triple J, Claire Mooney (‘Swallowed Up’, 2021)

“Just A Gent has an uncanny ability to blend hypnotic future bass and booming trap under a melodic umbrella.”
EDM.com

“…the artist has found a unique styling that only he can purvey.”

TELENOVA return with new single & video ‘Why Do I Keep You?’ + announce UK headline dates + RSD performances

by the partae April 21, 2022
written by the partae
Praise for Telenova

“It’s rare for a band to arrive with such a polished and defined aesthetic this early” – NME, ★★★★

“Telenova have made an impact pretty quickly.” – Richard Kingsmill, triple j

“This is stupidly good. A sophisticated and utterly mesmerizing second release from one of 2021’s best new acts” – Bridget Hustwaite, triple j (Tranquilize)

“‘Cinematic indie pop at its finest. It sounds at once nostalgic while thoroughly modern, and is sure to get stuck in your head from the very first listen.” – Purple Sneakers

“A majestic debut from a band in its infancy… Telenova’s universe is so well realised you’ll be leaving footsteps in the band’s saturated deserts the moment you step through their portal” – NME, ★★★★

“This song really did take me by surprise when I heard it for the first time on Friday and I thought YES, kicking off next week’s BREAKING with this….” – Matt Wilkinson, Apple Music 1 (Tranquilize)

“Enchanting, alluring and instantly stylish stuff…” – Declan Byrne, triple j (Bones)

“…the trio bring together a lifetime of musical experience condensed into genre-combining brilliance, where their overlapping worlds come together to create striking moments of hazy alt-electronic-R&B-esque versatility.” – Pilerats

Melbourne three-piece Telenova, one of the brightest musical discoveries in 2021, are thrilled to share their self-assured new single ‘Why Do I Keep You?’ – released via Pointer Recordings. ‘Why Do I Keep You?’ is a sophisticated slice of modern nostalgia that evokes ‘90s melancholic guitar pop without losing its contemporary lean.

Intensely personal in nature, ‘Why Do I Keep You?’ is about letting go of someone you loved, someone bent on their own destruction – “I kissed the ground before you, I cut my eyes out for you, restless, blinded by my love…oh why do I keep you?”

The single is accompanied by Telenova’s most realised visuals yet – a stunning eclectic bazaar that sets the trio in their own colourful universe; filled with clever movement, tongue-in-cheek references, and playful verve. Conceived and directed by Angeline Armstrong, the ‘Why Do I Keep You?’ video features choreography from Zoe Marsh (Gretta Ray, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard).

‘Why Do I Keep You?’ was teased earlier this month through a global campaign titled Amateur Hypnotism. Mysterious street fliers appeared in New York, London, Sydney, Melbourne and Istanbul, leading the curious to a typically elegant looping 20-minute mix of original Telenova beats and remixes, curated in-house by Telenoir, the dark, beats inspired off-shoot of the band.

In conjunction with the digital release, Telenova will release a limited 7” single featuring unique multi-medium artwork and a Telenoir remix (both exclusive to vinyl). To celebrate the vinyl release, the band will perform two special in-stores at Rocksteady Records and Sound Merch on Record Store Day 2022.

Debut headline shows have also been announced for London alongside appearing at The Great Escape Festival in Brighton. Before jetting off to Europe, the band will perform at the 2022 APRA Awards in Melbourne. Full tour dates and information below.

Telenova first introduced the world to their vivid aesthetic and pop smarts via debut EP Tranquilize. Anchored by cult hit ‘Bones’ (triple j’s 2021 Hottest 100 #91) and garnering major media support across the world (BBC Radio 1, Apple Music One, NME, Vogue Paris), Telenova quickly found a passionate, growing audience with their rich brand of pop and surreal visuals, all driven by enigmatic frontwoman Angeline Armstrong.

INDII G. ANNOUNCES NEW EP “RIVERHOUSE”

by the partae April 21, 2022

DUE MAY 6 VIA EPITAPH RECORDS

NEW SINGLE & MUSIC VIDEO
“DANCING WITH YOUR SILHOUETTE”
OUT NOW

Rising rapper/producer/multi-instrumentalist Indii G. announces the release of his new EP “Riverhouse” set for digital release on May 6th. In celebration of the announcement, he also shares an intimate new single called “Dancing With Your Silhouette” alongside a cinematic black & white music video mirroring the emotionally raw nature of the track.

Indii reveals that, ”Dancing With Your Silhouette is a track telling a story of betrayal and then acceptance. The video, shot by Aaron Marsh, featuring my girlfriend and a few homies, portrays the story in a pretty nonlinear way. It was a ton of fun to shoot and I love the way it came out!“

WATCH “DANCING WITH YOUR SILHOUETTE” HERE

Staying in the realm of the lo-fi alternative sound that Indii. G embraces, the 6 blissful tracks on “Riverhouse” emphasise polished guitar-forward instrumentation entwined with silky vocals and fresh rhythmic beats. All the songs were co-produced by Indii G. himself and mixed by Miles Walker.

The EP’s first single “Hampton,” served as a reach into the bedroom pop/indie pipeline. It soon proved itself as a stand-out track, earning features in established outlets such as LA Weekly, Billboard and Nylon. He went on to navigate feelings of jealousy in a budding summer romance with second single “Summer Nights,” utilising trap drums layered over a dreamy guitar riff. Combined, these releases cemented a flourishing new stage in Indii G.’s musical journey.

Throughout his career Indii G has created music as a personal diary, putting his feelings into fruit for hip-hop heads and DIY chillwave enthusiasts alike; this EP is no exception to this. He explains that “Riverhouse is a collection of stories that in some ways represent a chapter of my life. To me, this project symbolises me balling it up and leaving it all behind as I open the door to begin a new and better one.”

About Indii. G
As a self-taught piano and guitar player, in 2016 Indii G. began his career by experimenting with different beats and vocal arrangements on Soundcloud. Since then, the Louisiana native has continued to build momentum through his harmonic and infectious sound resulting in over two million streams and counting on Spotify. Taking influence from Juice WRLD, Frank Ocean and Blackbear, Indii G. is motivated by watching his friends succeed and grow within music.

Superbloom

by the partae April 21, 2022
written by the partae

Where are you currently based?

We’re in sunny North London.

How did Superbloom form?

Sam (our drummer) and I have been friends for years. We used to play at one of our local venues, The Green Room in Welwyn Garden City, in separate bands when we were kids. This was back in the day when people went out to gigs on a Tuesday night, just for fun! We had a lot of mutual friends and ended up playing in a band together. Many years and musical projects later, we started Superbloom.

What’s been happening recently?

Well the bleakness of the pandemic finally seems to be coming to an end, so the last few months have been pretty good by comparison!

Since the start of the year we’ve been focused on releasing Smile. This involved adding the finishing touches to the mix, creating the artwork and music video, contacting blogs and radio stations etc. It’s been a lot of work, but thankfully it’s been totally worth it. Now we’re looking forward to putting together a new live set and getting out on the road.

Your latest single ‘Smile’ is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting?

It was one of the first songs we wrote together as a band, and is ironically one of the most technical. Having just started a fresh new project, we were building from a blank canvas and experimenting with different sounds and writing styles. I think this experimentation led to the track being quite progressive. Having said that, as a vocalist I like to write catchy, hooky melodies, so hopefully it still has that sing-along feel.

How did you go about writing Smile?

It was quite a while ago now, so this is testing my memory… I just remember me and Sam bouncing ideas off each other in my old home studio (bedroom at the time!). It was the product of a laptop, an interface, a guitar, some programmed drums and a cheap vocal mic. Most of our songs start off this way. Once the bones are there we head into the rehearsal studio and really get to work.

I do remember the bass riff at the start being a very last-minute addition though. Now I can’t imagine it any other way!

Where and when did you record/produce/master and who did you work with?

We recorded Smile at Broadfields Studio in Watford, London with Tom (Mitch) Mitchener. I think it was around 2018. Mitch produced, engineered, mixed and mastered the track. He basically became part of the band for the week we were there recording our first batch of songs. It was invaluable having his creative input, given we only have two core members.

How did you approach the recording process?

We’d worked at several music studios with several producers in the past, so we knew exactly what we wanted (and didn’t want). Not only from the sound we produced, but the studio experience as a whole. We always try to have solid demos recorded and be well rehearsed before heading into the studio, as this saves time, money and keeps stress to a minimum. It just means you can really enjoy yourself and have fun with it. We even knew what kinds of effects we wanted on different sections of the guitars and vocals, it was just down to Mitch to dig out the right pedals. He always seemed to get it right first time!

You have an album on the way, what can we expect?

We’re a pretty new band, so we’re still searching for the sound that makes us, ‘us’. I guess this could be misinterpreted as a negative thing, but we don’t see it that way. At the moment we’re just enjoying the journey and relishing the challenge. So, album-wise, I’d expect something diverse. It’ll still fall under the Alternative Rock umbrella, for sure, but there’ll be a lot of variety from track to track.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

I’ve always listened to a wide range of music. Looking at my Spotify recent searches, the latest are Kenny Wayne Shepherd, All Them Witches, Steven Wilson, The Mysterines and Alanis Morissette. Kind of eclectic, but that’s good, right?

What do you like to do away from music?

My day job and music seem to take up more or less my entire life. But aside from that I like to keep fit. I spend a fair bit of time in the gym and play a lot of sport (mainly football). I’m also a pretty avid cook and love cooking up a feast for friends. We’ll come on to my love of food later…

What’s planned for 2022?

We’re gagging to get out and play more shows. As I said before, the pandemic has really limited us in that respect, so that’s a big ambition for the rest of the year. We’ve got a few things in the pipeline, so keep an eye out for dates!

We’re also working towards the launch of our first full-length album, so that’ll keep us busy.

Favourite food and place to hangout?

I like this question. I love food. My favourite is probably pizza, and curry. And nachos. And everything.

I’m getting more and more anti-social as I get older, so hangouts aren’t what they used to be. I like going out for some food and a few drinks somewhere local, so I don’t have to worry too much about the calamity that is public transport. I also like playing sport, so maybe on the football pitch? It’s always nice having a few beers in the bar after too.

Just a Gent

by the partae April 21, 2022
written by the partae

The release of this album feels like a milestone for you and for fans alike; how does it feel to have this collection be so definitive as your sound?

It feels incredible, a huge part of why I wrote this record was to have a full piece that screams this is Just A Gent and this is who I am. Part of me wishes I had done it sooner but I’m stoked it’s finally here

Talk us through some of your favourite moments of the album, and the importance of each of the collaborators you worked with on it: how did you go about linking up with the guests we hear on the album?

I’ve been putting together the album for a couple years now and some of the ideas have been sitting around for years and years. I think a few of my favourite moments are the more recent tracks I created to fit the record like lightspeed and planet oasis. I really enjoyed creating those, just drifting off into my imagination and letting them be whatever they wanted and I love how it brings me back to that when I listen.

In terms of collaborations these are all friends who I’ve worked with in the past or been working with in some capacity for a while. For this record I just wanted to work with people I cherished and creatives I trust. Everyone on this record has their own unique  taste and they all stay true to themselves.

When you listen back through this record; what stands out the most to you about how your skills as a songwriter/producer have evolved over the last few years?

When I listen back, I think I’ve stopped thinking as much about what everyone else is going to think and I’m just making music that I want to hear myself. I think as a producer I’ve tried to take a step back and focus a lot more on the songwriting / sonics of these tunes. I usually have a tendency to overdo it, add to many elements, push the mix way to loud etc. So with this record I went for a less is more approach and really tried to nail the sounds and sonics of the guts of the ideas rather than overcomplicate them.

Do you think, in making this album, your approach to music making in general has changed in any particular way?

Absolutely, I’ve never committed to finishing so many songs for 1 project and its certainly stressful. In the past I’ve just worked at my own pace and really refined things before they were released but the more I worked on this record like I had previous projects it was just neverending. I think I had to find a point in all these songs where I said enough is enough and really pick and choose the best elements/ best tracks and recycle the rest. Originally tnjs would of been a 24 track double LP but had to make some sacrifices for the sake of my sanity

If this is the jump off point for a new Just A Gent fan, what kind of energy do you hope is instilled in them through listening to it?

I hope they can find some creative energy. My goal with this entire record is to inspire people to create and innovate. Even if that’s not the outcome, whatever they take from the record is why I do this. Sharing these songs/sounds in the hopes people can feel what I have felt during writing them and finishing them. Music still blows my mind everyday, how powerful of an effect it can have on your mood or a certain situation. If my sounds are enough to fluctuate someone’s choices into a more positive place than I’ve done my job

Australian dance and beats-driven music is properly having a *moment* right now – what is it about this sort of music being made out of this country that is really nailing it?

I think it’s been this way since I have been in the scene. Aussies have always been one step ahead and it’s not because we want to be ahead of the curve, it’s because we are just making it for fun. We are fortunate to be surrounded by such talented artists here that preach about just being creative, having fun with it and trying to stretch our imaginations to the limit. It’s so good to see so many friends/comrades killing it in the worldwide scene and I never doubted any of them. If you create to your own taste and make music for you then I don’t see how you can ever fail.

Are you listening to any artists or producers right now who feel in any way influential on the way you’re looking at music, creatively?

Always! At the moment I’ve really been loving Magdalena Bay. They are out of LA, I’ve only recently discovered them and I can’t get enough. Their new track dreamcatching has one of the coolest video clips I’ve ever seen and their sound is just so pretty and perfect. They just get it.

The album already feels set up for the live scene – what are you looking forward to the most about getting the new music ready for tour?

Now that I’ve finally got a full record I’m just keen to play it out. I have never tested any of these songs to audiences because this record has come together during the last couple years. I can’t wait to see how people react to the songs live and on a huge system where I’m hoping it sounds it’s best. This will be the first tour where I’m gonna be really showing what just a gent is rather than DJing and playing a bunch of times I like. Very excited ?

SNAKEHIPS TO TAKE STAGE IN MELBOURNE FOR THEIR ‘NEVER WORRY’ TOUR, PRESENTED BY THE OPERATIVES AND DELIGHT

by the partae April 20, 2022
written by the partae
Local tastemakers The Operatives and Delight Records have teamed up for a special Snakehips Melbourne show between their Groovin The Moo dates. Supporting the headliners will be fast rising Sydney star Cabu, NZ lord of the dance AROHA, as well as local legends FOURA and Angus Green.

Platinum-selling UK duo Snakehips (Oliver Lee and James Carter) have garnered an ever growing reputation for their signature sound; a sensual, contemporary take on old school R&B, influenced by 90s hip-hop throwbacks and 1970s string samples.

Much like a snake shedding its skin, the Snakehips sound continues to evolve, with each layer being peeled back to reveal another exciting chapter in the story. It was 2015 hit ‘All My Friends’ that turned the boys from promising production duo to a household name. A collaboration with singer-songwriter Tinashe and internationally renowned hip-hop star Chance the Rapper, the track would go platinum in the UK, US, Australia and New Zealand.

Since then they have linked up with the likes of Grammy-winning rapper Anderson .Paak (‘Money On Me’), One Direction’s Zayn (‘Cruel’), Danish singer-songwriter MØ (‘Don’t Leave’) and Brooklyn rap don Joey Badass (‘Either Way’). Continuing to broaden their musical horizons and push their sound into bold, fresh new directions, Snakehips have firmly cemented their status as one of the best double acts in the game.

Among the stellar supports is Sydney artist/producer Cabu, who brings a whole new meaning to the saying ‘smooth as butter’ with his luscious R&B and house infused grooves. Having amassed 50Mil streams and over 750k monthly listeners on Spotify alone, Cabu’s most recent releases have been featured on Triple J, Dj Complexion’s Future Beats radio, Soundistyle, Majestic Casual, Soulection Radio, BBC 1Xtra, Maison Kitsune and many more. Both DJing and live, Cabu has also supported local and international heavyweights such as FKJ, Emotional Oranges, Cosmo’s Midnight, BOO Seeka, Slumberjack & Kilter. With an array of releases locked and loaded, the future is set to be a big one for Cabu.

JNR.’S EXPLOSIVE debut single ‘REMEMBER’ A hopeful song for a confused generation

by the partae April 20, 2022
written by the partae

jnr. have well and truly snatched the spotlight with fiery debut single ‘Remember’. Crackling with energy, this trio of Sydney based musicians and producers have brought a fresh sound to the Australian music scene by channeling electrifying indie-pop.

Distorted and playful vocals adorn refined and rhythmic pop production, creating a supremely catchy tune that is reminiscent of iconic front runners 1975, LANY, and No Rome.

jnr. is made up of Ben Siva, Nico Scali and Max Jacobs who have been writing music together for close to 10 years. Between writing, producing and performing themselves, they have been involved in a wide variety of talent such as Loretta, Khaled, Chris Lanzon, SADBOii and Rageflower just to name a few.

It was only in 2020 that they pivoted their attention toward a singular focussed project. The result: a collection of pop production tracks adorned with earnest and self-reflective lyrics. The first of which is sampled in ‘Remember’. By taking the time to hone their skill and synchronicity as a band, their future as unique players in the Aussie pop landscape is incredibly exciting.

This single features a complex underpinning in the lyricism – offering a tension in the push-pull dynamic between bright pop sounds that reveal a darker experience. This space of uncertainty is where lead singer Ben says his artistry flourishes, “‘remember’ deals with grief, nostalgia, and the moment you are forced to put yourself in your parent’s shoes. I think anyone can relate to wanting to remember someone or something from their childhood, but the song has a deeper meaning for me. I’m always drawn to darker lyrical themes and uplifting instrumentals – that push and pull always attracted me to some of my favourite artists.” Ben Siva, jnr.

By embracing the ebb and flow of the complexities of inner emotions and personal experience, it paves the way for a genuine connection between artist and their music, “The feeling of knowing oneself is essential to being human. So the writing process was really me thinking about who I would be without my memories.” Ben Siva, jnr.

The accompanying visualiser explores this space of darker uncertainty. Feeling more like a fever dream than a music video, a retro TV flickers on static whilst pulsating lights and pacing strangers in the background add a layer of surrealism. This, coupled with the unique effects and experimental visual production is a really special addition to already a fantastic song.

Without a doubt, jnr. know what they’re doing and will leave you wanting more.

MDOU MOCTAR Releases Afrique Refait Remix EP With remixes of acclaimed album Afrique Victime by Pan-African electronic artists curated by Mdou Moctar

by the partae April 20, 2022
written by the partae

Mdou Moctar’s Afrique Victime was one of 2021’s most lauded releases: an innovative alchemy of Tuareg folk, blues and rock, electric guitar pyrotechnics, field recordings and electronics with poetic call-to-arms lyrics about the plight of his homeland of Niger.

Today, in line with their activity supporting African artists, Mdou Moctar announce Afrique Refait, a remix collection of songs from Afrique Victime. The tracklist features sound-makers at the vanguard of electronic music in Africa, with a view of highlighting different scenes across the continent. Many of the artists are associated with pioneering Ugandan label Nyege Nyege Tapes who were vital to the making of the project.

Producer and bassist Mikey Coltun says:

“Jay Mitta who remixed ‘Chismiten‘ is one of the pioneers of the Singeli scene in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Like most of the artists picked for these remixes, he is pushing the boundaries of folk music beyond what it started as to something new and untried while remaining true to his roots. When the Nyge Nyege Tapes mixtape came out it was powerful and we got in touch with the label and asked about Jay doing a remix.

Tommy T who remixed ‘Ya Habibti‘ is a producer from Ethiopia who lives in DC and I knew from growing up in the DC music scene. We thought he’d do something different from the other remixers and he took a more traditional approach.

MC Yallah is one of my favourite MC/rappers right now. Here she is paired with producer Debmaster to create a powerful in your face remix of the love ballad ‘Tala Tannam.’

Duma is the duo of Lord Spike Heart and Sam Karugu from the grindcore scene in Kenya. It’s some of the most interesting and sonically innovative music coming out of Africa: noise and grindcore with a mix of Kenyan roots and Ugandan music. Their video for (2020 single) ‘Lions Blood‘ was super powerful and in your face, and we wanted to work with them.

Yugen Blakrock was recommended to me through a friend I met in Mali years back from South Africa. I was told “Yugen is an MC, but she works with great producers and would be amazing!” This is one of my favorites in the series!

Aya Metwalli who remixed ‘Layla‘ is originally from Egypt and is now part of the Lebanese noise scene that should definitely be checked out by more people. There’s an amazing experimental and noise scene in Egypt, Lebanon, Tunisia, Palestine. I got to know Aya Metwalli through people in the Beirut noise community where they’re a small but tight-knit and collaborative scene. We knew she would kill it on this remix.”

DJ Diaki is one of the pioneers of Balani music scene in Mali. Balani is a house party that started in the capital Bamako and moved to the outskirts. They bring a soundsystem and blast music loud and people dance, going back to traditional Malian folk parties. I attended one of these parties in Mali in 2012 and was sent some Balani music on my cellphone. There’s a great shop in Bamako called Mali Retro that originally sold cassettes. Nowadays you tell them what you want and they throw it on a flash disc. In 2016 I was given a combination of traditional Balani phone music and newer electronic stuff. The four remixes of ‘Afrique Victime‘ focus on different elements of the song separately: bass, guitar, guitar II and vocals.

Rey Sapienz, MC Dougis, Kabeaushe and Chrisman are all artists I was previously unaware of before working on this project. These artists were presented by the amazing Nyege Nyege Tapes label and were all essential in completing the Afrique Victime Remix project. While a lot of the artists previously chosen came from either East, West or North Africa, Rey Sapienz, MC Dougis and Chrisman showcase all the cool shit coming out of Central Africa – The Congo.”

Psychedelic Porn Crumpets release fresh dose of warped rock with ‘Acid Dent’ single and video, ‘Night Gnomes’ album out this Friday!

TOURING NORTH AMERICA, UK AND EUROPE IN 2022

As the countdown to the release of their fifth studio album Night Gnomes enters its final stages, Psychedelic Porn Crumpets are back to further tease their next phase of delightfully kooked magic with the release of new single, ‘Acid Dent’.

The release of ‘Acid Dent’ comes as the West Coast firebrands prepare for not only the release of their new album, but a long-awaited return to live touring; with already announced dates for North America, Europe and the UK.

‘Acid Dent’ – like singles ‘Bubblegum Infinity’, ‘Dread & Butter’, ‘Bob Holiday’ and ‘Lava Lamp Pisco’ before it – is a masterclass into how Psychedelic Porn Crumpets can have a kaleidoscope of influences and sonic ideas at their disposal, yet never lose sense of their core sound and identity. The new single spotlights guitars and fuzz with flair, while the rhythms buoy Jack McEwan’s hypnotic vocals seamlessly.

A pure avenue for escapism, ‘Acid Dent’ leans into the effects of, well, psychedelics, as McEwan takes listeners on a trip of his own.

“My goodwill ‘Drugs are bad for you kids’ song. And to be perfectly honest they probably are. But good luck telling that to the youth of today I tell ya! It’s not like that safe ‘60s pot we used to smoke. Not like the prescribed methamphetamine us ‘50s housewives were doing! Not like that Cretic Wine us Romans would devour.

Every generation has their means of escapism and for some reason here in Perth, or at least when we were in our heyday you could purchase mushrooms and acid from any decent supermarket. So it’s inevitable we’re gonna be munching jumpers and chatting to fences in a few decades, but as for now, well… we’ve seemed to somehow milk a career out of it. Who’d have thought. But yeah, it’s probably not going to end well, hence my newly appointed position on drug safety. Then again, someone also once told me, “Hell hath no fury like a man who’s pressed pause on his drug abuse”, so now I’m slightly more perplexed as to where I stand. Anyway, good luck to everyone, enjoy yourselves but remember nobody wants to pick up your marbles after.” JACK McEWAN, PSYCHEDELIC PORN CRUMPETS

For the ‘Acid Dent’ music video, the band reunited with director and artist Ollie Jones – the creative genius behind the claymation music videos fans will remember from Psychedelic Porn Crumpets’ SHYGA! The Sunlight Mound era. This time around, the action takes place at ‘PPC Chemicals’, with hijinx ensuing in classic Psychedelic Porn Crumpets style.

“I’ve always been a fan of the the horror sub genre ‘ MELT MOVIES ‘ films like Street Trash, The Blob and Body Melt. So when I was given the title of the track, I knew what I wanted to do right away. A simple story of a guy who after a freak accident is granted the powers to melt everything he touches and how it escalates in a comedy of errors throughout the video. Think the Skittles advert only more gruesome.” Oliver Jones

As fans and industry followers around the world await the release of Night Gnomes (April 22nd), Psychedelic Porn Crumpets continue to rack up the acclaim off the back of their 2022 releases to date. Over 1.2 Million streams have been accumulated across ‘Bubblegum Infinity’, ‘Bob Holiday’ ‘Dread & Butter’ and ‘Lava Lamp Pisco’, with radio love continuing to stream in from the likes of triple j, BBC Radio 1, KCRW, KEXP, FLOOD FM and more.

Editorially, Psychedelic Porn Crumpets have been consistently elevating their presence in Australia and abroad thanks to praise from outlets including Rolling Stone Australia, Brooklyn Vegan, Entertainment Tonight, Tinnitist, Music Feeds and Under The Radar.

CLAMM announce new album & share video for single ‘Bit Much’

CLAMM

ANNOUNCE NEW ALBUM
CARE
OUT AUGUST 19 ON CHAPTER MUSIC

SHARE NEW SINGLE
‘BIT MUCH‘

Melbourne punk power trio CLAMM return with the first single ‘Bit Much‘ from their second album Care, which will be released on vinyl and digital by Chapter Music on August 19.

CLAMM’s music was already concerned with the woes of the world, but the last two years have added extra urgency to their blown out, dystopian punk power.

About ‘Bit Much’, guitarist/vocalist Jack Summers says – “It can be a strange thing to focus on your own mental wellbeing while also hearing about the constant horrific events of the world. ‘Bit Much’ focuses on this dynamic and the overwhelming feeling it can bring.”

CLAMM explore the confusion of what it is to be a young person trying to live an honourable life in this fucked up world. Their songs are about trying to navigate systems of power and oppression while retaining a healthy sense of self and mental health. Community, creativity, and catharsis are what they hope to achieve through their music.

Care is bigger, louder and darker than previous album Beseech Me (2020). CLAMM dodged lockdowns to record at Rolling Stock and Sound Park Studios with Nao Anzai (NO ZU, Cash Savage, Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever). Nao also plays fearsome synth on the album and has joined the band on-stage at recent shows. Saxophonist Anna Gordon (Mangelwurzel) contributes wild free jazz skronk to a number of tracks.

‘Bit Much’ is the first CLAMM recording to feature the bass and backing vocals of newest member Maisie Everett (also in Belair Lip Bombs), who joined the band shortly after Beseech Me was released. Jack and drummer Miles Harding have been best friends since primary school, but with Maisie the CLAMM trio finds its ultimate form.

Beseech Me was a Triple R and FBi Radio feature album in 2020 and sold out its original cassette pressing almost immediately. It was reissued on vinyl in 2021 by UK label Meat Machine (renowned as the home for Canadian art-punk provocateurs Crack Cloud), which saw CLAMM featured on the cover of French Rolling Stone and played on BBC 6 Music.

In Australia the band has played with Amyl & the Sniffers, The Chats, Cash Savage and The Murlocs, and played Yours & Owls Festival and Melbourne Music Week. A UK/Europe tour planned for Jan/Feb this year was cancelled for the usual reasons, but the band will return in August for their first international shows.
