Sydney / Eora via Dharawal / Illawarra indie group Bored Shorts have shared their latest single ‘Common Connections‘, which will be featured on their upcoming LP Way Off! to be released via Spunk! Records on September 3. LISTEN HERE.

‘Common Connections’ expands on the album’s ability to reimagine the world through the eyes of not only their own actions, lifestyles, and values but offers up the experiences of those they might not agree with. Of the track, Dom Hoban shares that “Common Connections is about a very specific type of worry – that two separate friends won’t get along when they are introduced to each other. It got us thinking that if your friends are your external representatives, and they don’t get along, well that can only mean there are things inside yourself that conflict. The call-and-response chorus is us calling out for our friends to see eye to eye, only to realise that it’s fine if they don’t. And therefore, it’s fine if there are parts of you that are at ends, in fact, that’s kind of what makes everyone great. It’s like the worst Jerry Springer episode you’ve seen, with an Eat Pray Love ending. Live, this track is so much fun to play – the chorus is an absolute belter and all 5 of us give it everything we’ve got”.

Emerging in 2017 from a ten-year friendship between Dom Hoban and Will Blackburn, the band soon blossomed into a five-piece group along with Charles Rishforth, Nicholas Griffith, and Ash Bundang. Having shared stages with the likes of Rolling Coastal Blackouts Fever, Alex Lahey, The Goon Sax, and Body Type, Bored Shorts have solidified their sound in the alt-rock audience, all whilst pushing the new direction of future Australian indie-pop.

Since their critically acclaimed debut EP, Looking Up, the band has spent the last three years prolifically but patiently writing, refining, and recording an assortment of tracks that have now culminated in Way Off!. Inspired by the likes of Parquet Courts, Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever, and Aldous Harding, Bored Shorts have tapped into their own makings, and ‘Common Connections’ is a thought-provoking and infectious ode to warm indie instrumentalism, an element that has been showered in their musical catalogue. ‘Common Connections’ emerges from Bored Short’s upcoming release Way Off!, and also arrives with the announcement of their signing with Australian rock label Spunk! Records.

‘Common Connections‘ is out now via Spunk! Records,

Where are you currently based? I currently live in Miami, Florida.  I find Miami to be a very multicultural city with both Latin / Central American and European influences that you can easily find in the people, places, and food!  We have an excellent music nightlife and art scene, which provide lots of influence and inspiration for me musically.     How did you first start playing music? I first started playing music at a very young age as a drummer in local punk rock and industrial bands in the Chicago, Illinois area where I was raised.  When I discovered electronic dance music, the beats immediately caught my attention and I started learning to DJ at 16, and I started producing original music pressed to vinyl at 18.  I started performing internationally shortly thereafter.     What's been happening recently? Well after a long hiatus from music I decided to start re-dedicating more of my free time to getting back into electronic music and catching up with today's new artists and sounds.  I released my first EP in over a decade on Tim Xavier's Face To Face label in the Summer of 2020 which really motivated me to start getting serious about making music again.      You've founded label CMND CTRL, please tell us about how this came about and what the intention of CMND CTRL is: Over the last year I was able to create a sizable collection of new original material and I just didn't feel like trying to send it all out to multiple labels and wait months to hear of any interest or feedback from them.  I didn't like the idea of just being another demo submission in their email inbox, so I felt the best way for me to get my music out there and have more control over the exposure and direction was to start my own label.  Having my own label also gives me the ability to start working with other artists I respect and admire so creating CMND CTRL was almost a forgone conclusion for me.  I have run multiple labels in years past and it was simply a matter of learning today's digital landscape and deciding on a suitable musical direction for the label itself.  CMND CTRL focuses on my interpretation of Techno music in today's landscape and I hope to pair the majority of releases with both established and upcoming producers who can put their own touches to my music.       How will you go about deciding on music and artists to work with? So far it has been a fairly organic process.  I have stayed in touch over the years with artists I admire and who have been kind enough to lend their talents to my label such as Alexi Delano.  My upcoming roster of releases has also helped to give me a little bit of street credit when I reach out to other artists who I do not know personally.  I think when they see some of the people remixing for me and also hear my original material they know I am serious about pushing forward the music, which motivates them to want to work with me.  I'm very excited to see what other artists I will have a chance to collaborate with as the label grows.       Please tell us about your very latest release: Currently, I am promoting my label's 2nd release, CTRL002, which features 2 original tracks from myself and an excellent remix by Berlin's Techno wizard Ray Kajioka.  I was introduced to Ray by Tim Xavier and really liked the type of sound Ray has been creating recently.  Thankfully, he agreed to help out with this project.  Ray is a super talented producer and DJ and I hope to bring him back on another release in the future.      What programs/equipment do you use? I grew up learning on outboard analogue equipment, which I really enjoyed, but fast forward to the present and I am about 90% creating digitally on the computer.  I used to be a Pro Tools guy, but made the switch to Ableton Live and really enjoy it's functionality and ease of use to sketch ideas quickly.  I am also a big fan of Native Instruments Komplete series of VST and plugins as well as the VST clones of classic synths being made by Arturia.  If I am lucky and find some success back in music I hope to be able to start getting back into collecting some outboard equipment again, but time will tell.      What direction do you see music heading towards? Great question and one that is really hard to pin down.  We are such a connected global society that I think that helps some people draw on influences they might not normally have in their day-to-day local environment.  I do enjoy the fact that musical equipment, whether physical or digital, is more easily affordable and accessible than ever before, which gives more artists the power to create.  It's an exciting time for music in my opinion.   What do you like to do away from music? These days I am a family man with a beautiful wife and 2 wonderful children so I like to spend lots of time with them.  Living in a coastal region I enjoy boating, fishing, and I also fancy myself as a pretty good cook so those are the things I spend most of my free time on.    Who are you listening to at the moment? So many good artists are out in the scene today!  It's almost overwhelming haha!  If I had to narrow it down I would say Dustin Zahn, Micheal Klein, Rene Wise, and Rodhad.    What's planned for the remainder of 2021? I have a pretty aggressive release schedule planned for the label, with new releases currently scheduled every 6 weeks or so.  A lot of my own original material, but some excellent contributions from Tim Xavier, Juska Wendland (aka ORION), Jesper Dahlback, and Tony Rohr.  I hope to continue the trend of releasing quality Techno music into 2022 and beyond.  As long as my music keeps resonating with people I will continue to make it.     Favourite food and place to hangout? I love all food too much!  If I had to pick it would be Japanese cuisine.  For a good hangout I just can't beat relaxing poolside on my backyard patio with family and friends.

DMA’S DROP SURPRISE 4-TRACK EP I LOVE YOU UNCONDITIONALLY, SURE AM GOING TO MISS YOU + NEW SINGLE ‘WE ARE MIDNIGHT’

written by the partae
Following their recent wins at the 2021 AIR Awards (Best Independent Album, Best Independent Rock Album, Best Independent Dance, Electronica or Club Single) for their critically acclaimed third album THE GLOW, I OH YOU are delighted to today share DMA’S return to their rock roots with their brand-new EP I Love You Unconditionally, Sure Am Going To Miss You, with a spotlight on new single ‘We Are Midnight’. The EP will also be released on a limited-edition Blue Truman 12” vinyl (the colour lovingly named after Tommy’s Blue Staffy) on Friday 8 October. Vinyl is available for pre-order via dmas.bandtshirts.com.au/.

A short, sharp joyride of a record, ‘I Love You…’ represents a tribute to DMA’S’ long-term hardcore fans as well as to the love of rock music that still powers the band’s beating heart. It’s a reminder of where they came from and how far they’ve come. Regardless of how big they get; they’ll always be the same band that used to throw a mattress against the wall to record demos in Johnny Took’s flat.

Focus single ‘We Are Midnight’ is a classic freeway song, its distorted layers of shoegaze guitar and immediate, anthemic hook take you right back to the euphoria of their 2016 debut Hills End.

“’We Are Midnight’ is a noisy guitar pop explosion which brings us back to our roots. In writing the track we felt all the melodic parts were strong but structuring it properly to make the most out of the song was the hardest part. By self-producing this EP, we had to take more control of aspects such as this and seeing growth in this facet of our song writing makes us proud to share it with you today :)” – Johnny Took

DMA’S started recording demos when they were quarantining in Canberra ahead of their performance at the 2020 AFL Grand Final. Inspired by the freedom of working with no pressure or expectations, the songs quickly emerged with an organic yet intensely focused vibe. After brief sessions in Coogee with Dylan Adams (who engineered the band’s earliest recordings, including the Platinum hit single ‘Delete’), DMA’S had crafted an EP which blends the vibrant familiarity of their early days with the taut immediacy that they have since mastered.

“This EP was in the natural trajectory that you can sometimes take in a band,” says Johnny Took. “You work with different producers, and you want to keep changing, but there’s also something in your core that pulls you back. It’s cool to get back to your roots sometimes.”

That’s not to say that this EP is a regression. Instead, it showcases how versatile and how muscular the band’s song writing has grown since those early days. Opener ‘1 Way’ is faster, denser, and louder than anything that appeared on THE GLOW. Meanwhile, ‘Viol’ has a pop instinct that belies its origins as a song written by Matt Mason on a Czech dobro, while the band’s first electric guitar ballad ‘Junk Truck Head Fuck’ features some of their most vivid and fully realised storytelling, with a bittersweet lead vocal courtesy of Tommy O’Dell.

Eagle-eyed fans might already recognise the EP’s title. A friend of the band had left the message ‘I Love You Unconditionally, Sure Am Going To Miss You’ on a whiteboard before heading overseas. It later featured in a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it shot in the video for their debut track ‘Delete’.

DMA’S will embark on their national headline tour next month with shows in Adelaide, Fremantle (sold-out), Brisbane (sold-out), Melbourne and Sydney, before embarking on their long-awaited return to the UK and Ireland later this year. Their recently rescheduled and extended tour will see them play to a combined audience of 65,000 people.

Until such a time as they DMA’S can grace a stage near you, allow the comforting familiarity of I Love You Unconditionally, Sure Am Going To Miss You to get you through!

SHAD Shares new single & video ‘Body (No Reason)’ New album TAO out October 1

Praise for Shad

“Work” is just the next statement in Shad’s legacy as one of Canada’s most revered musical pioneers.” – The Line of Best Fit (Work)

“A heavy-hitting song”  – COMPLEX (Work)

“As always, Shad’s breathless flow holds the whole thing together.”
– Flood Magazine (Out of Touch)

“A powerful single” – KEXP, Song of the Day (Storm

Toronto rapper Shad has been keeping busy releasing singles since last spring to offer glimpses of his brand-new album TAO out October 1st via Secret City Records. Today, he unveils a powerful and candid fourth track titled ‘Body (No Reason)’.

Shad explains “Every song on the album highlights a different aspect (or aspects) of human life. And this one is the simplest: Body. No reason. Just movement, feeling. Got this monster track from Dom Dias, one of the most creative producers around, and just went off!”

The accompanying video, directed by his creative collaborator Justin Broadbent, perpetuates the low-fi and unifying esthetic the duo has been outlining in all the videos off TAO. Broadbent tells us “With a Joe Carter closing line on a track with huge bars, it only made sense to have Shad throw down on a baseball diamond. Unfortunately, the SkyDome was booked on the day of our shoot!”

The last singles ‘Out of Touch,’ ‘Work’ and ‘Storm’ received an overwhelmingly positive response by media and fans alike and was picked up by Complex, Hip-Hop Wired, Brooklyn Vegan, Exclaim!, Strombo, KEXP, American Songwriter and many more. The single also saw Shad landing on billboards and playlist covers across streaming platforms. In addition, recently the renowned Brooklyn-based DJ J. Period released ‘Globetrottin,’ a brand-new song featuring Shad and Masego. ‘Globetrottin’ is a playful storytelling track on J. Period’s EP, which also features Black Thought, Dave Chapelle, Masego, Lin-Manuel Miranda, and a host of others.

Over the course of five records to date, the JUNO Award-winning Toronto rapper has used an array of old-school tools to tackle modern problems, addressing the indignities and absurdities of our world through a shapeshifting mélange of boom-bap breaks, dusty soul samples, jazzy improvisation, and 10-dollar words rolled into thousand-dollar rhymes. But after weaving his myriad musical and philosophical interests into a socio-political song cycle on 2018’s Polaris shortlisted A Short Story About A War, Shad began building his sixth record, TAO, from a much simpler concept: an image of a circle. Though, in true Shad fashion, he saw something much more profound within its basic round boundaries.

TAO is about deep connection, wholeness, and the various threats to it. TAO refers to the Chinese philosophy of naturalism and is an acronym drawn from CS Lewis’ highly prescient 1943 book, The Abolition Of Man, that discusses The Tao. The TAO acronym is also found in The Age of Surveillance Capitalism by Shoshana Zuboff, another very influential book for Shad during his writing process. “The books were written something like 70 years apart but totally connect on the topic of preserving our humanness against certain threatening ideologies and technologies,” he explains. “Each song on the album focuses on a different part (or parts) of our humanity that we’ve been losing touch with.”

Toronto-native artist and producer Charlotte Day Wilson today releases a remix of her acclaimed single ‘Take Care Of You’, featuring King Princess, Meshell Ndegeocello, and Amaarae. The entrancing track is an Amazon Exclusive and comes as a further addition to her acclaimed debut album, Alpha, out now via Stone Woman Music. Listen to the remix of ‘Take Care Of You’ here.

Charlotte shared the first single, ‘If I Could’, from her new LP in May, which features a verse from poet, musician, and fellow Canadian artist Mustafa, and premiered on Annie Mac’s BBC Radio 1 show. The track was launched with a clip co-directed by Charlotte and award-winning director Kevan Funk, showcasing the changing faces and identities of Texan bull riders. Charlotte’s recent single ‘Keep Moving’ is a continuation of the ‘If I Could’ video and the queer cinematic series for this album, a compelling exploration of self-discovery and earnest declarations, recollecting Charlotte’s inner struggles of love, growing, and breaking that she’s finally speaking to in a greater way. The track was featured as the face of Spotify’s inaugural EQUAL campaign playlist and is another immensely moving and deeply personal clip, the visual further tells the story of Alpha and boldly commences Charlotte’s new era.

Charlotte has made waves in the industry from her 2016 release of her debut EP CDW (which has received more than 92+M streams in total on Spotify), and through her work with friends and collaborators BADBADNOTGOOD, Daniel Caesar, and Kaytranada. Charlotte returned in 2018 with the poignant EP Stone Woman. She has garnered 1.6+M Monthly Spotify Listeners and over 100+M streams on Spotify, truly making a name for herself.

Charlotte’s contemporary take on R&B and Soul showcases her sublime vocals and her ingenuity as she fuses vintage basslines, gospel assonance, and contemporary minimalist production to create a strikingly beautiful sonic aura. The authentic Alpha era has now begun.

Sam Blacky Releases Debut EP, 5-Track “Summer Solstice.” Out Now on Her Own Imprint Stabby Records

by the partae August 20, 2021
written by the partae

Artists: Sam Blacky
Title: Summer Solstice EP
Label: Stabby Records

After consistently releasing her tracks “Too Late,” “No More,” “Body” and “Paradise” earlier this year, the dynamic LA-based artist Sam Blacky drops her debut “Summer Solstice” EP. In addition to previously released singles, it also features Sam‘s brand new production “La Noche” with singer/songwriter Elisa Gold, a deep and groovy vocal house gem that will transport you to a crowded, sweaty tropical paradise where revelers from around the globe dance the night away. Always one to create a vibe through her music, Sam Blacky‘s first EP on her label Stabby Records is clearly inspired by her love of travel and musical experiences in the most beautiful of places. Driving basslines, booty-shaking rhythms, and sultry vocals are the main theme of “Summer Solstice,” making for a sonic journey that you’ll want to never end.

“‘La Noche’ is the final focus track of my EP ‘Summer Solstice’ and it’s the perfect finale. I was so excited I got to work with a friend of mine who I actually met a few years ago in Ibiza, Elisa Gold, on the vocals. Thanks to her, the song is entirely in Spanish, adding even more to the global vibes of the EP as a whole. This song has the most tribal, uptempo beat of the whole ep so obviously, it’s my favorite. As I’ve said before, tying in my travels and different cultures is a huge part of my goal with these songs, as well as female empowerment and support of one another. Working with another globe-trotting, foreign, female artist on this one was so special. The vocals are all about freedom, dancing, letting go, and pure enjoyment. I hope it makes everyone feel like summer every day.” – Sam Blacky

Samantha Black is a multitalented DJ/producer, model, and influencer professionally known as Sam Blacky. On Monday night’s global premiere of Marvel Studios’ film ‘Shang-Chi and The Legend of Ten Rings’, platinum-selling hitmaker Swae Lee and R&B icon Jhené Aiko teased a musical collaboration that fans will hear featured in the upcoming film. Today, they released the anticipated track titled, ‘In The Dark‘. The song will appear in the upcoming Marvel film alongside previously released tracks like the blockbuster single ‘Run It‘ with DJ Snake, Rick Ross, and 88rising’s Rich Brian as well as ‘Lazy Susan‘ featuring heavyweights 21 Savage and 88rising artists Rich Brian, Masiwei and Warren Hue. LISTEN TO ‘IN THE DARK’ HERE.

ABOUT SWAE LEE
As the younger and melodic half of southern hip-hop duo Rae Sremmurd, Swae Lee has established his own versatile discography with a sound that is undeniably and utterly his. Tracks such as French Montana’s ‘Unforgettable’ (which peaked at #3 on the Billboard Hot 100), the Grammy-nominated ‘Sicko Mode’ with Travis Scott and Drake (which also landed at #1 on the Billboard charts), and his impressive list of writing credits (including the hook to Beyoncé’s ‘Formation’ which peaked at #10 on Billboard Hot 100) are all a testament to that versatility. His song ‘Sunflower’ with Post Malone (off the Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse soundtrack) topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart and remained in the Top 5 for four months, with over one billion cumulative streams. It also is the highest-charting song to ever land on a Spider-Man franchise soundtrack. He recently won a 2020 Billboard Music Award for Top Dance/Electronic Song for the hit record ‘Close To Me’ with Ellie Golding & Diplo.

ABOUT JHENÉ AIKO
Six-time Grammy nominee Jhené Aiko has crowned a breakthrough year with three new Grammy nominations for her R&B masterpiece, Chilombo, including the prestigious ‘Album Of The Year.’ Chilombo was also nominated for an American Music Award for Best Soul/R&B female, two Soul Train Awards, and three NAACP Awards. Jhene’s 2020 album Chilombo – now certified Platinum with seven gold and platinum singles – topped the Billboard R&B Chart at #1 not once but twice this year, and has garnered over 2 Billion streams worldwide. Chilombo made chart history as the biggest Billboard R&B debut from a female artist since Beyonce’s Lemonade. Jhené is currently dominating urban and rhythm radio with her hit single ‘B.S.’ featuring H.E.R. and guest appearances on new singles from Big Sean, Ty Dolla $ign, and Saweetie.

ABOUT MARVEL STUDIOS “SHANG-CHI AND THE LEGEND OF THE TEN RINGS”
Marvel Studios’ ‘Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings’ stars Simu Liu as Shang-Chi, who must confront the past he thought he left behind when he is drawn into the web of the mysterious Ten Rings organization. The film also stars Awkwafina as Shang-Chi’s friend Katy, with Michelle Yeoh as Ying Nan, and Tony Leung as Xu Wenwu, Shang-Chi’s father; as well as Meng’er Zhang, Fala Chen, Florian Munteanu, Benedict Wong, Yuen Wah, Ronny Chieng, Zach Cherry, and Dallas Liu.  “Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings” is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and produced by Kevin Feige and Jonathan Schwartz, with Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, and Charles Newirth serving as executive producers. Dave Callaham & Destin Daniel Cretton & Andrew Lanham wrote the screenplay and the screen story is by Dave Callaham & Destin Daniel Cretton. The film opens in theaters on September 3, 2021.

R3HAB teams up with UK sensations Sigala and JP Cooper for their collaboration “Runaway,” a stunning coming-of-age saga that fuses the best of dance and pop. The song reflects each artist’s signature sound, from R3HAB‘s dynamic and high-energy style and Sigala‘s radio-friendly beats to JP Cooper‘s soulful vocals. Opening with undulating, upbeat melodies, “Runaway” rides on a combination of muted basslines and heartfelt vocals; its powerful lyrics about taking a risk to realize a dream or happiness is something many listeners will be able to relate to. The track is the first confirmed as part of R3HAB‘s new studio album, which will be released this fall, and offers a sneak peek into what fans can expect from his newest body of work. “Runaway” was years in the making between these three talented artists, so read on below for more about the story behind the track:

R3HAB:
“Sigala and JP are pioneers in the UK‘s dance-pop scene, and I’ve been following their work for years. Being able to create a song together that reflects each of our signature sounds makes me extremely proud. We were in the same headspace when working on this song. There’s always something in your life that requires boldness to unlock its full potential. ‘Runaway‘ is about daring to try; I hope our fans are inspired to find that boldness within themselves.”

Sigala:
“I am so happy we are releasing ‘Runaway‘ for the world to hear. One of my favourite parts of what I do is collaborating with other writers and producers – and I was blown away by the talents of both R3HAB and JP Cooper. We had so much fun making the record, and I hope everyone enjoys it!“

JP Cooper:
“‘Runaway‘ has been in the making for a good couple of years now, and I’m so happy it’s finally off the hard drive and into the world. It’s been amazing watching R3HAB and Sigala develop the track to where it’s at now. ‘Runaway‘ is a youthful, wide-eyed, coming-of-age story… it definitely brought back a few memories. I’m sure you’ll be able to relate.”

Dutch–Moroccan Multi-Platinum DJ and producer Fadil El Ghoul, better known as R3HAB, has been trailblazing his way through dance music for the better part of the last decade. From his breakthrough remixes for Rihanna, Drake, Taylor Swift, Calvin Harris, The Chainsmokers, Lady Gaga, to anthems such as Gold– and Platinum-certified “All Around The World (La La La)” and “Lullaby,” to his collaborations with the likes of Luis Fonsi, Sean Paul, ZAYN, Andy Grammer, Sofia Carson, Smokepurpp, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, Astrid S, Olivia Holt and more, R3HAB has proven to be one of the most talented and forward-thinking artists in the game, whose work collected over 5B streams to date. In 2016 R3HAB founded his label CYB3RPVNK, which has passed 2B streams across all platforms since its inception. R3HAB himself continues to evolve and diversify his sound by working with a variety of artists around the globe, pushing the boundaries of dance music as he collaborates across genres and languages. In 2020 alone R3HAB celebrated over 900M Spotify streams. He is currently the most discovered artist on Spotify, one of Spotify’s top 150 most streamed artists across all genres worldwide, and ranked #13 on prestigious DJ Mag’s Top 100 DJs chart. With his combination of innate artistry and innovative attitude, in 2021 R3HAB is continuing his journey among electronic music’s elite.

Sigala is the musical nom de plume of Bruce Fielder, a London-based house DJ, producer, and remixer. Launching his career with “Easy Love,” a sampling track that topped the charts in the UK in 2015, he continued releasing bright, sunny dance-pop tunes featuring a variety of guest vocalists and producers. His 2018 full-length album “Brighter Days” included collaborations with Kylie Minogue, Craig David, Sean Paul, and Nile Rodgers, among many others. Subsequent tracks featuring Becky Hill (“Wish You Well“) and James Arthur (“Lasting Lover“) continued his run of UK Top Ten hits. In 2019 Sigala released the single “We Got Love” featuring Ella Henderson. Another song with Becky Hill – “Heaven on My Mind,” appeared in 2020, and “Lasting Lover” with James Arthur became Sigala‘s 8th single to chart in the UK Top Ten. His latest single “You For Me” with Rita Ora, proved to be yet another Summer smash of 2021.

JP Cooper has done the legwork. Ten years in bands in and around his Manchester hometown. Multiple songs written on his own and with a variety of collaborators, a couple of which became global hits-that-will-not-die: “Perfect Strangers” with Jonas Blue and his own “September Song,” which is now sitting at some 600M streams. An international solo career built on pure songcraft. And he’s done the business. The singer/songwriter’s 2017 debut album “Raised Under Grey Skies” has sold in old-fashioned numbers: 1M copies at time of writing. His 11M monthly Spotify listeners have contributed to a grand total of 4B total streams. And, over the past 18 months, Cooper has done the hardest thing: built on all that to create a second album, a collection of 13 songs that work as together and work apart, that out-paces, out-sings and, by his exacting standards, out-classes his debut.

Indie folk artist SOUTHEY debuts haunting new single, 'RUN RIVER'

Indie folk artist SOUTHEY debuts haunting new single ‘RUN RIVER’

by the partae August 20, 2021
written by the partae
With rich vocals and intimate songwriting skills at the forefront, Sydney musician Southey presents a gorgeous debut single in ‘Run River’. A single marked by delicate acoustics and a knack for enveloping lyricism and presence on record, ‘Run River’ is Southey’s first release for 2021 – and a strong one to lead with.
As an introduction to Southey’s broader sound, ‘Run River’ gives listeners an insight into an artist comfortable in his own skin, creatively: a natural storyteller, led by experiences and influences stemming from life as it goes around him.
The ‘Run River’ sessions took place at Southey’s home studio in Surry Hills, before being mixed by Peter Holz (Gang of Youths, Vance Joy) and mastered by Nick Franklin (CLEWS, Polish Club). The sound gives shades of Bon Iver, The Middle East and more contemporary influences like Didirri and Hollow Coves, making ‘Run River’ a track squarely aimed at impacting on a listener’s feels.
“I wrote ‘Run River’ a few years ago, it was one of those songs that just came quite organically. I often like writing things that intrigue me, as if someone else wrote it and I’m hearing it for the first time. It’s a strange paradox but that’s where this song started.”
Southey
The process of bringing ‘Run River’ to life was as all-encompassing for Southey as could be. From writing, recording and producing the single himself, he also produced the cover artwork. Turning his hand to this element of the release was unexpected, but satisfactory for the artist.
“The artwork for the single was something I wasn’t expecting to create myself. It started out as a few concepts and sketches. Before I knew it I had this set of acrylic paints and a canvas and my studio was covered in these abstract river paintings.”
Southey
‘Run River’ is not just Southey’s debut, but the debut release on newly launched music label Peach & Sons. Based in Sydney and headed up by Sam Patching, Peach & Sons is thrilled to kick off their new chapter with Southey.
“Run River’ is a beautiful song by an incredibly talented local artist who I’ve felt privileged to work with. I couldn’t be more excited to share this as the debut release on our label and look forward to bringing more of Southey’s work to the surface later in the year”.
Sam Patching, Peach & Sons
As the first taste of more music to come, ‘Run River’ is an emotive statement of intent from an exciting artist with more to share.

‘Run River’ is out now.

SAMETIME are multi-instrumentalists Sunshine Coast brothers Tim and Sam Aitken. Today they release their dance floor-ready new tune ‘Moving On’ and unveil details about their forthcoming EP ‘Maybe We Can Get High?’. Packed full of flavour and energy, their infectious new single is the follow up to their 2020 singles, ‘Get To Know Ya’ and ‘Til Yr Not Ok’.

“Moving On’ is about reminiscing on the good times we had with friends growing up and how getting older got in the way. The decisions a person made on a night out that resulted in something worse than a hangover the next morning. The sweet sound of this song counteracts the lyrics and the bitterness of coming to terms with the fact people change and it sucks.”
SAMETIME

For fans of lo-fi, alt-pop acts like The 1975, Last Dinosaurs and Parcels, SAMETIME’S forthcoming EP ‘Maybe WeCan Get High?’ features a collection of tracks which tells of the ecstatic uppers and brutal downers of youthful hedonism.

“We’re young male adults going through that phase of life where going out and getting “sloshed” every weekend is compulsory. ‘Get To Know Ya’ is a bright, upbeat song about just going out and meeting someone that makes you feel good temporarily. ‘Something To Feel’ explores the darker side of nightlife and being consumed by the search for a bigger, better high. The EP is a self reflection of us but also our generation as we navigate our way through young adulthood but making sure we have a good time doing it.” SAMETIME

Despite their years (Tim, 22 and Sam, 19) they have spent the last 10 years developing a reputation as one of the Sunny Coast`s hardest working acts busking every weekend, and fine tuning their songwriting craft. In 2017 Sametime signed a long term publishing deal with Sony Music Publishing.

Like Angels

by the partae August 19, 2021
written by the partae

What’s been happening recently?

So much! We’ve been working on the release of our fourth single “Teenage Dream”, including a music video which will be out soon! We’ve also written, produced and filmed our very own YouTube series called “Almost Like Angels”. The first few episodes are already out, and we have so many more on the way!

Your latest single ‘Teenage Dream’ will be released on the 13th of August, what influenced the sound and songwriting?

“Teenage Dream” is an anthem to encourage people to keep working hard and not to let the negativity or doubts of others stop you from pursuing your dreams. People can be very dismissive and often treat your dreams or aspirations as childlike or something you’ll eventually “grow out of”. We’ve experienced this a lot personally and know so many others have too, so we decided to write a song about it!

When creating the track, we wanted it to have a very triumphant and encouraging sound, so the production is built around a marching band beat, creating that imagery of a group of people (all the dreamers out there!) marching towards turning their dreams into a reality. We wanted the song to sound very vibrant and fun, reflecting that “carefree teenage spirit”, but also to create something that people of all ages could listen to and enjoy because no matter what age you are, it’s never too late to dream or pursue your passions!

How did Teenage Dream come about and what does this single mean to you?

“Teenage Dream” was inspired by personal experience. Whilst we are blessed to have some really amazing supportive people in our lives, during our Like Angels journey, we have also experienced people expressing unsolicited negativity and doubt over our decision to pursue music. This song was really important to us because it was a response to all of the doubters, haters and discouragers in one song! We were able to write honest lyrics without a filter and say what we needed to say – it was quite therapeutic to be honest! More than that, it was also super important to us that “Teenage Dream” was relatable to other people. We want all of our fellow dreamers out there to feel encouraged on their own personal journey, to feel empowered and to know that they are not alone!

Where and when did you record/produce/master and who with?

We recorded this song back in 2019 with Philippe-Marc Anquetil. Phil has produced, mixed and mastered all of our songs so far. He’s incredibly talented and such a genuine human being. We’re so grateful to have had the opportunity to work with him and learn so much in the process too!

How did you approach the recording process?

We showed Phil a voice memo recording on our phone, which had vocals and some simple piano chords. When it was time to actually start the recording process at the studio, we started by building the track around the original piano chords from that voice memo. Once we added the piano, we built up a marching band beat, including drums and brass band elements. We added vocals, harmonies and then some intentional sound samples that contributed to the storyline of the lyrics. For example we added the sound of a school bell ringing in Verse 1 when we mention the word “school” and in the Chorus, we added the sound of a gun being loaded and fired while we’re singing “If you don’t think I can make it, load your gun cause I can take it”. We were very open during the recording process – open to experimenting & to where the song could go. It could’ve had so many different sounds or styles, but whatever choices we made had to complement and emphasise the meaning of the lyrics.

What programs/instruments did you use?

One of our favourite parts of the recording process is being as hands on and creative as possible! Phil recorded the song using logic Pro and we played piano for the track. We used and combined a lot of different sound samples to construct and build the track, including some that we made ourselves in the studio, for example the “heys” you can hear in the background. You can also hear a massive crowd shouting the lyrics. Phil recorded multiple takes of us shouting lyrics into the microphone and then layered them to make it sound like a huge crowd had gathered and was singing along with us.

Please tell us about your new YouTube series ‘Almost Like Angels’:

“Almost Like Angels” is a self-taped docuseries that follows our journey as sisters trying to build a successful music career and reach international fame, in a mockumentary style (think “Flight of the Conchords” or “The Office”). Whilst it’s mainly built on satire and comedy, the series also explores some of the very real experiences we’ve had as independent artists. It will make you laugh, cringe and maybe even cry! We’ve written, produced, filmed and edited the entire series, so it’s been a pretty cool experience and we hope you like it!

Who are you listening to at the moment?

It changes daily, but at the moment we’ve been loving Blackbear’s new EP “misery lake” and two artists we always come back to are Taylor Swift and NF! We’ve also been listening to a lot of Aussie made music at the moment too – we’re living in such crazy and uncertain times and streaming Australian music is one simple and easy way to help support our peers at the moment! A couple of our fave 100% Aussie playlists are “New Australian Music” by The Underground Stage and “auspOp now!” by AuspOp now (both on Spotify). We’ve also made quite a few playlists of our own on our Spotify artist profile which we update regularly, to share our current and ever changing favourite tracks.

What’s planned for the remainder of 2021?

We’re currently collaborating with a Melbourne artist on our music video for “Teenage Dream” – we can’t wait to share it with everyone! We’ve also got more episodes of “Almost Like Angels” coming out weekly and of course, more new music on the way too!

“SASSY 009 defies conventions with ‘Blue Racecar,’
conjuring a spellbinding sonic trip that’s difficult to place.”

Today, SASSY 009 shares her new track ‘Here Comes The Weekend’ via Luft Recordings. LISTEN HERE.

The pulsating Billie Ellish-meets-peak-time-Berghain outing sees the Oslo-based musician enter a new realm of the dance floor as she sends tremors through its ceilings with her captivating vocals, crystallised synths and razor-sharp drums. The former Soundcloud username of Oslo-based musician Sunniva Lingard, SASSY 009 leans into the same nordic-pop-cool vibe as Robyn, with a rough electronic edge like Yaeji and Doss. Previously a trio and now solo, her 2019 album KILL SASSY 009 made waves across i-D, Pitchfork, NTS, Resident Advisor, Dazed and more for its coarse take on electro-pop snares that crunch, glitched out bass and hooks that linger.

Now solo, Sunniva is ready to share her next lot of new music by way of ‘Here Comes The Weekend’. Speaking on the track, SASSY 009 personally observes the darker side of a hedonistic lifestyle: “When I started making this song, I envisioned myself sitting in a dark little apartment on a red leather couch staring into the smoke of a joint laying on the table. It led me into thinking of how complex the process of escaping a “sober” reality really is, and how I’ve willingly put myself in situations where self-control is on puzzling terms. ‘Here Comes The Weekend’ is all about that existentially risky moment of self-realisation when things have already gone too far.”

The track follows her much-loved return with the “captivating new pop number” (DIY) Blue Racecar and the first step into her new innovative adventure SASSY009.WORLD with the retro Blue Racecar game. ‘Here Comes The Weekend’ unlocks the next SASSY009.WORLD component ‘Sassychat’, which gives fans and the audience a chance to chat all sorts directly to Sunni – airing this Sunday at 1700 BST / 1800 CET / 0200 AEST.

WHICH WAY TO HAPPY

NEW SINGLE ‘ICED GEMS‘ OUT NOW

Following their recent single ‘Sailing Still‘, today Penelope Isles announce news of their much-anticipated second album, Which Way To Happy, out November 5 via Bella Union and available to pre-order here. To celebrate the occasion the band have shared a colourful and psychedelic video for blissful new single ‘Iced Gems‘.

When you’re trying to make it through tough times, you need a little light to find your way. That light blazes brightly on the alchemical second album from Penelope Isles, an album forged amid emotional upheaval and band changes. Setting the uncertainties of twentysomething life to alt-rock and psychedelic songs brimming with life, colour and feeling, Which Way to Happy emerges as a luminous victory for Jack and Lily Wolter, the siblings whose bond holds the band tight at its core.

Produced by Jack and mixed by US alt-rock legend Dave Fridmann, the result is an intoxicating leap forward for the Brighton-based band, following the calling-card DIY smarts of their 2019 debut, Until the Tide Creeps In. Sometimes it swoons, sometimes it soars. Sometimes it says it’s OK to not be OK. Pitched between fertile coastal metaphors and winged melodies, intimate confessionals and expansive cosmic pop, it transforms “difficult second album” clichés into a thing of glorious contrasts: a second-album surge of up-close, heartfelt intimacies and expansive, experimental vision.

Warm and rippling new single ‘Iced Gems’ is a sorrowed lament, played out over the gentlest of fluttery keyboards and experimental electronic sounds, while Lily’s ‘Sailing Still’ charts the life of a relationship to a slow-burn and sorrowed soundscape of dulcitones, cello, violin and more: building in increments to a climax of measured grandeur.

The album swerves into Mercury Rev and MGMT’s cosmic slipstream with ‘Miss Moon,’ a galloping centrepiece with an irresistible call to dream: “Hey, kids – look up!” Steering the album through further contrasts, ‘Have You Heard’ is a feel-good flurry of insistent, pulsing space-rock; ‘Pink Lemonade‘, meanwhile, is a song of sweet, sharp beauty, touching on fading childhood memories and lifted by Fiona Brice’s strings. ‘11 11’ hosts Lily’s most tender vocal yet: recorded in one take through tears, it finds Penelope Isles at their most exposed, with Brice’s strings weeping in sympathy. Finally, ‘In a Cage’ cogitates on confinement yet finds solace in field recordings of happy, high times – a judicious note of meditative reflection after a giddy ride.

More field recordings were made during a stay at a small cottage in Cornwall, where Penelope Isles began work on the album. With romantic heartache already in the air, things swiftly got worse: lockdown began, claustrophobia kicked in and emotions ran high. As Jack puts it, “We were there for about two or three months. It was a tiny cottage with four of us in and we all went a bit bonkers, and we drank far too much, and it spiralled a bit out of control. There were a lot of emotional evenings and realisations, which I think reflects in the songs.”

After Cornwall, the band redid many of the rhythm tracks, recorded a little in Brighton, then recorded more in Cornwall at their parents’ house. “It was,” says Jack, “a proper rollercoaster ride.”

The ride continued with Fridmann, whose recent credits include Isles’ favourites Mogwai’s #1 album, As the Love Continues. As Lily puts it, the process of sending Fridmann a mix, receiving it back in the morning and then having five hours to make decisions on it resulted first in stress, then in something sublime. “He made everything so colourful. It’s an intense-sounding record – a hot record. It was so refreshing to have that blast of energy from Dave – it’s like he framed our pictures.”

Away from the confines of the cottage, the Wolters also opened the door to a collaboration with storied composer Fiona Brice, whose credits include John Grant, Lost Horizons and Placebo. A “big bucket-list tick” for Jack and Lily, the team-up results in glorious arrangements across the album.

On its release, Until the Tide Creeps In received rave reviews from Q, DIY, The Line of Best Fit and many others, while finding champions in Steve Lamacq and Shaun Keaveny. Meanwhile, extensive touring saw the Isles develop into a formidable live force, with ‘Gnarbone’ emerging as a sure-fire show-stopper.

Now, the Isles have 11 more show-stoppers to add to the mix. At the album’s heart, the band’s core traits have never been stronger: the bond between the Wolters, a sensitivity towards complex feelings, a desire to celebrate life in all its facets and an ambitious reach combine to create an album that feels utterly, emphatically present on every front.

Today, legendary Melbourne punk rock band Bodyjar drop their new single Get Out Of My Head.

For nearly 30 years now, Bodyjar have built their local & international following with relentless touring demonstrating their blistering high energy live shows, that have made them one of the most respected punk rock bands in the world.

New single Get Out Of My Head sees Bodyjar return to the up- tempo catchy punk rock the band are renowned for. Calling on all their experience over the years, the new single is a true return to form from one of Australia’s finest.

Produced by Bodyjar and Sam Johnson (Northlane, Luca Brasi, Camp Cope, The Bennies), mixed by Steve Evetts (New Found Glory, Architects), the track is the first piece of new music from the band since their 2019 single Big Shot.

“This song is written out of frustration in what we see in the papers and how it usually serves someone’s agenda rather than being based in fact, getting sick of hearing stupid opinions and learning to block out a lot of what I was reading online. To the point of actually being able to block out certain parts of some social media even when they are right In front of me. It’s a talent”  singer / guitarist Cam Baines

Stray tuned for more Bodyjar news.

The record, which follows recent boundary-pushing tracks ‘You Are My High‘ and ‘Ring The Alarm’ with Malaa, is from the forthcoming Marvel Studios’ film Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings. The record will also serve as the anthem for ESPN‘s coverage of this year’s College Football season, which kicks off on August 28th.

The recent string of anthemic records arrive while DJ Snake is in the middle of his Europe and North American tour, which has already included stops at major cities and festivals. The remainder of his 2021 run will also include a stop at North America’s legendary electronic music festival EDC Las Vegas in October. For Rich Brian, the release arrives hot off the heels of his collaboration with NIKI and Warren Hue on ‘California‘, from 88rising‘s forthcoming Head In The Clouds 3 compilation.
