UP LATE’S ‘STARS’ EP IS OUT NOW FEATURING SINGLES ‘FRIENDS’, ‘ALONE’, ‘FUCK YOU’ + MORE

by the partae December 18, 2020
written by the partae

“‘STARS’ takes the rule book and throws it out the window and with an introduction this good, there’s no doubt what will follow will be insane. 8/10.”
Hysteria

“Mammoth sound and a relentless message.”
Claire Mooney, triple j Unearthed

“Enigmatic and hyper-active, Up Late refuses to sit in one place long enough to be confined. There’s metalcore, straight rock, EDM, pop and hip hop elements all woven atop one another, and with incredible harmony no less.”
Blunt Magazine

“Up Late is filling the gap within the Australian music industry where no other artist seems to be crossing these genres.”
MILKY

Fresh from the announce of his new label home, Up Late’s new EP ‘STARS’ is out today via UNFD.

Up Late – AKA the moniker for Wollongong singer-songwriter, producer and visual artist Max Pasalic – marked the first solo project to join the UNFD roster after his signing in September. The ‘STARS’ EP marks a complete collection of his previous singles from 2020, as well as a reimagined version of his celebrated triple j DIY Supergroup submission ‘Like This’. On today’s release, Pasalic declares: “That distortion and chaos, mixed with the pop semblance – that dichotomy – that genre-mashing, that’s the EP. That’s Up Late.”

After debuting with his comp entry in May, Up Late scored an honourable mention among 900+ other entrants, a nomination as one of the “10 most exciting discoveries of 2020” by triple j and nods from local music media including Pilerats, Blunt Magazine, Music Feeds, MILKY, Depth + more.

Backing it up with inimitable singles ‘FRIENDS’,  ‘u left me on read’ and ‘Alone’, Pasalic continued to flex on his flair for unusual genre blends. Many may remember the 24 year-old as the lead singer of heavy act After Touch, who released various outputs on UNFD in 2017/18, while he also has credits producing for various local and international rap and hip hop artists including the likes of BONES.

Up Late’s ‘STARS’ EP is out now.

Lock up your sons, daughters, pets and valuables… GENERATION are back and going long-haul with the high-altitude buzz of: TOKYO

by the partae December 17, 2020
written by the partae

Generation – TOKYO
OUT NOW on Tri-Tone Music
Stream / Video
“It’s naughty and loud; all frenetic drums, fuzzy guitars and fearless vocals.”

 – Words For Music“It rocks with abandon and abrasion and joy and, frankly, zero f*cks given.” – Backseat Mafia

The unrelenting spirit of wayward youth, burnished decadence and fizzing unpredictability arrive neatly packaged as Liverpool’s ferocious punk duo Generation announce their second single Tokyo, lifted from their upcoming debut mini-album Suicidal Champagne. Tip-toeing back home in someone else’s clothes from the night before, the brotherly duo slips briefly from their own world into civilisation to discharge a three-minute flare via Tri-Tone Music.

From New York Dolls and The Stooges at the start and rushing past eyeliner-era Manics in the middle, Generation represent the present of chandelier-swinging punk, combining raucous instrumental energy with low-waisted, high-heeled anti-glamour. The new release follows on from the momentum of their first single and title track from the album, Suicidal Champagne, which gained them critical praise and denomination as figureheads of a fresh, angst-wave, neo-punk scene being cultivated in Liverpool.

Tokyo was written by the duo, brothers, James and Dean Carne, about wanting rid of old band members that had aggravated them, willing them to leave the scene. The track talks of being trapped, painting claustrophobia on a canvas of gritty chords that are played with wild freedom. Ultimately, Tokyo finds the duo getting lost in the escapist fantasies that seem more relatable than ever as the world, not least Generation’s 20-something peers, lose days, weeks and months to the global pandemic.

Tokyo was recorded and produced in an atmosphere of fertile creativity in a converted barn in the company of producer/drummer, James Kenosha (Pulled Apart By Horses, Rhodes, Dry The River), with the Carne’s picking up the reins of bass, guitars and vocals at will.

Generation was originally formed in the Carne brothers’ late-teens in the midst of period of self-discovery and experimentation, gathering word of mouth from their must-see live shows, yet stubbornly holding back recorded material until they were satisfied that they were meeting their own, exacting standards. Pursued by industries as interested in their style as their sounds, the brothers sway between fashion and music, gigs and runways, deadbeat bars and photo studios.

Tiahi releases music video for ”Summer Love” showing European summer bliss at its best

by the partae December 17, 2020
written by the partae

One of the best things about the internet is that you can easily discover what things are like in other parts of the world, as is the case here.

Tiahi, who has had a long lasting connection with both Australia and New Zealand, is giving us a glimpse into summer in Europe or to be more precise, in the Mediterranean – the hub in Europe for all sun seekers to gather, relax, connect and make memories during the summer season.

‘Summer Love’ is more electronic than anything we’ve heard from Tiahi so far, but still grooving to that typical offbeat rhythm. It’s an astonishing mix between upbeat electronic energy and super chill vibes and the lyrics take you straight back to where you were last summer – or want to be this summer…

The clip is just what you’d expect: beaches, sunshine, pool parties and drone shots. No need for further explications, go see for yourself, keep your eyes peeled for more news from Tiahi and get ready for summer!

Grace Sanders Drops Visuals For Single ‘NO FAIR’

by the partae December 17, 2020

Previous Support for Grace Sanders

“It’s a great mix of addictive basslines, sultry synths and vocals that leave you wanting more. Grace grabs your attention from the very first second and doesn’t let go.” (Cool Accidents)

“this one grew on me with each listen, you’ve really got a dizzying, intoxicating presence on this new one grace.” 4 / 5 (Declan Byrne, Triple J)

“Grace shape shifting before our ears on this one – it’s got some bite and dark electronic edges.” (Dave Ruby Howe, Triple J)

Grace Sanders shares mesmerising new single (NME)

“Really love the way that production unfolds with drama Grace! It feels like i’m magically spinning.” 4 / 5 (Claire Mooney, Triple J) [About ‘Green’]

“Love this. Such a strong, woozy vocal, tops production and excellent song structure and hook.” 4 / 5 (Zan Rowe, Triple J) [About ‘Green’]

“It’s a charming four-minutes that centres on this genre-mixing pop sound that’s full of bubbly confidence and Grace Sanders’ signature charm” (Pilerats) [About ‘Green’]

Grace Sanders has dropped some eclectic and mesmerizing visuals for her blood-bubbling electro-pop single ‘NO FAIR’ that was released in November.

Pairing with the dark undertones of the track, the music clip (produced and shot by Cedric Tang) has Sanders captured in a massive collection of locations in her local area in Perth as Sanders spins webs with her razor-sharp delivery and busts her cool groove.

From the fruit market to the bar to the beach, the spotlight shines on Sanders feeding into to her unquestionable confidence, snary attitude and intoxicating essence.

The clip is an ode to Sanders favourite movie of all time, ‘Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind’, where the protagonist is backtracking through the past trying to preserve his memories of the relationship and finding where it went wrong. In this recreation, these locations that Sanders revisits were once intimate and warm but are now cold. Sanders states:

“The multiple outfit changes are an excuse for me to have fun (honestly) but also to show that passage of time that has passed between these events as if I am walking through my own memories as a different person with a different perspective knowing the things that have transpired now.”

Grace Sanders last two single releases have seen support from the likes of Cool Accidents, NME, Triple J, Double J, Triple J Unearthed, theMusic, Acidstag, Pilerats, AU Review, RTR FM Sound Selection and more.

On 26th of February 2021, Sanders will be delivering her debut EP ‘GUMS’. Pre-sales for ‘GUMS’ is now live here.

Summer Nights Live brings two nights of stellar Australian talent to Parramatta Park this January!

Summer Nights Live brings two nights of stellar Australian talent to Parramatta Park this January!

by the partae December 16, 2020
written by the partae

Bringing music to the thriving hub of Parramatta in the New Year, the inaugural Summer Nights Live festival is hosting a strong lineup for 2021!

On January 25 and January 26, music fans will be able to revel in peak Sydney summer vibes with the likes of The Veronicas, Kingswood, Jon Stevens, ARC, Bonnie Anderson and Jackie Brown Jr  at The Crescent, Parramatta Park. The nighttime events are family friendly affairs, presented by the City of Parramatta Council in partnership with Live Nation, and Parramatta Park Trust.

Melbourne’s favourite rockers Kingswood make their triumphant return to Sydney after spending 2020 releasing three records and more recently returning to live stages, selling out ten shows in Melbourne’s newly reopened, COVID-safe live music environment. Queensland pop stars The Veronicas have been reintroducing their fire brand of music to fans at home in recent years, with international successes elevating the Origliasso sisters to new levels of renown, before returning home. The hitmakers return to the stage in Sydney this summer for an unforgettable set. Kicking off the festivities will be none other than Jackie Brown Jr.

After a sell-out tour in 2019 Australian rock royalty Jon Stevens (Noiseworks, The Dead Daisies, INXS) will be headlining Australia day night.  When it comes to ARC, the weight of the band’s accomplishments is heavy. Featuring members Darren Middleton from Powderfinger, Mark Wilson from Jet, Kram from Spiderbait and Davey Lane from You Am I, the band is a true testament to the history of modern Australian rock music. Joining them will be everyone’s favourite neighbour Bonnie Anderson.

For the artists involved, Summer Nights Live will be some of the first opportunities they will have had to perform since early 2020. The return of live music around the country is one many fans and artists alike have been hanging out for. And with the right measures now proving to be successful at a range of live music events tentatively rolled out recently, we’re looking forward to an exciting summer ahead.

“It has been too long, far too long! If we had to wait any longer to play big stage rock’n’roll show I think our collective heads would in perfect synchrony explode. And what a festival, in such a beautiful part of the world, to come and save us, and bring the music back to the people. We can’t wait.“ Fergus Lincare, Kingswood

With health and COVID-determined safety in mind, festival organisers have established Summer Nights Live to roll out in accordance with COVID-safe protocols throughout. Capacity will be limited at the site in line with NSW Health regulations and only limited tickets available.

Socially distanced seating, as well as ticketed registrations and COVID-safe check-ins will also be implemented at Summer Nights Live to ensure that the events are executed to the highest of standards.

The concerts are an exciting addition to the City of Parramatta’s broader Summer Nights program, as well as the Crescent Summer Series in Parramatta Park.

“In 2021, our popular Australia Day event is undergoing an exciting transformation with a new concert series taking place over two nights in our City’s beautiful, World Heritage-Listed Parramatta Park. I look forward to welcoming people back into our great City with this exciting event that will feature incredible performances from a line-up of top Aussie artists.”
City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Cr Bob Dwyer

Tickets for Summer Nights Live are on sale through Moshtix from 12.00pm AEDT today. For more information on how to access the park via public transport or car, visit Parramatta Park’s website.

PRESS CLUB ANNOUNCE THE ELECTRIC EAGLE SOARS AGAIN TOUR

by the partae December 16, 2020
written by the partae

Clambering disheveled from underneath their respective stones, PRESS CLUB, announce their return to the tarmac of this great, southern land. The group will return to shattering hearts and odometers in 2021 when they repatriate with their true home. Ibis Budgets, calloused hands, and the ever-vibrant after midnight souvlaki scene, garlic sauce dripping onto the tops of airplane dehydrated leather shoes.

The band have flicked the switch to nuke the eastern seaboard through January and February 2021. In a music industry landscape where the goalposts keep shifting, PRESS CLUB are torpedo from the half-forward flank of the MCG. Hurtling in any capacity towards real rock and roll concerts.

It’s been a day and a year since the bands last headline show in 2019. In the time since they have been using any legal minute to spit out new songs together. Given the time in between drinks, anticipate tunes unheard, songs unsung and notes unplayed.

PRESS CLUB descend like flies for sixteen shows across Australia. The majority of dates having two shows to deal with the staggering demand for blood pumping through veins and speakers cracking.

Photo credit: Alasdair McLellan To celebrate the release of their upcoming new album Spare Ribs, Nottingham-based duo Sleaford Mods have announced their latest global live event – The Demise of Planet X - which will be streamed live from Village Underground on January 10th at 9PM AEDT. The show follows their much-lauded livestream from the basement of London’s 100 Club in September. Tickets are available HERE. The Demise of Planet X global live stream is announced as the band are poised to blow the cobwebs off life and unleash some much-needed wit and charm upon us with the release of their astonishing sixth studio album, entitled Spare Ribs, out via Rough Trade / Remote Control Records on January 15th 2021. The polemical Jason Williamson and dexterous producer Andrew Fearn kick against the pricks with unrivalled bite, railing against hypocrisy, inequality and apathy with their inimitable, scabrous sense of humour. Featuring Amy Taylor of Melbourne punks Amyl and the Sniffers and the British newcomer Billy Nomates, Spare Ribs finds the duo charged with ire at the UK Government’s sense of entitlement, epitomised by its devil-may-care approach to the coronavirus crisis. “After the livestream in September at the 100 Club, it was clear that the connection to the audience, although through a screen, was still as strong. We love playing. We love the songs we play. It’s never a problem to perform and after a year of not performing it’s a fucking joy to appear on your screens” says Williamson. The global live broadcast from the iconic Village Underground will take fans on a raucous ride through their acclaimed back catalogue and preview tracks from Spare Ribs, including recent singles ‘Mork n Mindy' and 'Shortcummings'. THE FORTITUDE MUSIC HALL PRESENTS ‘STRINGS ATTACHED’ CONCERT SERIES WITH BRISBANE SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

by the partae December 16, 2020
written by the partae

Brisbane’s premier venue, The Fortitude Music Hall is teaming up with the Brisbane Symphony Orchestra (BSO) and a unique selection of Australia’s finest touring talent for the inaugural Strings Attached series kicking off in February 2021.

Produced by The Fortitude Music Hall team in conjunction with Conductor Emeritus Antoni Bonetti & Brisbane Symphony Orchestra, Strings Attached is possible thanks to the support from Federal Government’s RISE Grant initiative with recipients announced today.

Taking place quarterly at The Fortitude Music Hall, each Strings Attached show will feature 25 members from Brisbane’s best-loved community orchestra onstage, performing alongside a different contemporary artist.

Showcasing the depth, legacy, and brilliance of Australia’s deep pool of local talent, Strings Attached is a collision of sonic worlds, making for a spectacular and memorable series of events for fans of both classical and contemporary music. The official line up of artists playing alongside BSO will be announced in early 2021.

The Brisbane Symphony Orchestra will be led by Antoni Bonetti, the Orchestra conductor and violinist. Bonetti is Music Director and Founding Conductor of the 70 member Brisbane Symphony Orchestra and Noosa Orchestra.

Antoni Bonetti says “Brisbane Symphony Orchestra is always pleased to accompany Australian contemporary artists and play music by Australian composers. We have a proud history of accompanying singers and instrumentalists and have in the past collaborated with Brisbane Band “Valtozash”. We often commission and perform Australian composers such as Elena Kats-Chernin and will be premiering a work of hers during our concert season this year.”

The Fortitude Music Hall’s John Collins (JC) says the chance to pull together this kind of talent was a no-brainer. “We’re absolutely chuffed that the Federal Government have come on board to support this. It’s the first time we’ve done anything like it and it’s going to be so special hearing such a full sound behind some of our best talent with The Fortitude’s epic acoustics. Our team have a huge line up planned for the series and we can’t wait to share it with you.”

Federal Member for Brisbane Trevor Evans said “We’re thrilled to support Brisbane’s very own The Fortitude Music Hall and Queensland Symphony Orchestra on this unique and compelling event. It’s exciting to see live music back in Brisbane again and these concerts are a great step forward in helping the local arts community recover from what has been a very difficult year, for both artists and audiences. A strong and thriving creative and cultural sector is imperative in rebuilding our local economy after COVID-19”.

BOOTLEG RASCAL ANNOUNCE ‘STRAIGHT OUTTA LOCKDOWN’ TOUR WITH SPECIAL GUEST SAINT LANE

by the partae December 16, 2020
written by the partae

Gold Coast-based party starters Bootleg Rascal have just announced a 14-date East Coast tour across metro and regional areas.

The group will traverse the country, stopping off at Brisbane, Sunshine Coast, Wollongong, Canberra, Sydney, Central Coast, Frankston, Melbourne, Geelong, Belgrave, Byron Bay, Gold Coast, Hobart and Caltowie.

“After moving and cancelling a bunch of dates in 2020, it feels good to finally be announcing something that is more likely to go ahead,” says guitarist Jimmy Young. “Anyone who knows us well, understands how important playing live shows is to us, so fingers crossed we’ll be able to get out there and make up for lost time with some banging parties.”

Gold Coast-based New Zealand born rapper Saint Lane will join the lads on all dates (excluding Sunshine Coast, Hobart and Caltowie). The rapper burst onto the scene in 2019, picking up praise from the likes of triple j, The Needle Drop, NME, The Guardian, GQ, Billboard and Beats 1 with Briggs. He’s also traversed the country, sharing stages with Lime Cordiale, JID and Bootleg Rascal.

Since their mid-2013 inception, Bootleg Rascal have released a slew of singles, two EP’s and two albums, all warmly received by critics and fans around the world, with support from the likes of NME, The Line of Best Fit, Clash Magazine, Pilerats and Wonderland Magazine. Multiple tracks have been added to Spotify and Apple Music playlists, high rotation on triple j and they’ve performed on the station’s esteemed ‘Like a Version’ segment.

The band have continually traversed the globe playing multiple sold out headline shows in France, UK, Holland, Germany, New Zealand and Australia, and performed sold out shows in the USA. They’ve also regularly appeared on major Australian festivals including Falls Festival, The Big Pineapple Festival, Lost Paradise, Hills are Alive, Festival of the Sun and Party in the Paddock.

The group are currently in the studio working on another record, set for release in early 2021. In the coming weeks, they’ll also announce a scavenger hunt for free tickets and merchandise, that will launch via their social media platforms.

The list of performers is a dream line-up: from Kylie Minogue, Archie Roach, Nick Cave, Midnight Oil, Amy Shark, Guy Sebastian, Mary Seymour, Birds of Tokyo, Courtney Barnett, Missy Higgins, The Rubens, Jimmy Barnes, Tones And I, The Avalanches, Julia Jacklin, Bliss n Eso, Jessica Mauboy, Kate Ceberano, Something For Kate, Middle Kids and more….

We’ve got one more present for you to unwrap this festive season, and it’s gonna be a good one…

Tune into ABC and iview this coming Sunday 20 December at 6pm for The Sound: Making Gravy Christmas Special – inspired by one of Australia’s most iconic songwriters and featuring performances by:

  • Paul Kelly: Australia’s greatest and most enduring songwriter, responsible for the iconic ‘How to Make Gravy’ song, typically takes his spectacular Making Gravy outdoor live shows across the nation each December. Tune in this Sunday to watch previously unseen live footage, captured at Kelly’s incredible sold-out Gravy show at The Domain, Sydney
  • Recorded at Hamer Hall, Melbourne, with the 45-piece Orchestra Victoria, we get a sneak peek at The Teskey Brothers’ upcoming YouTube special (live 22 December). Run Home Slow has been acclaimed as one of the best records of 2020
  • Baker Boy with Dallas Woods feat. Sampa The Great – filmed at VIC’s sacred Hanging Rock and, incredibly, with a shoot also taking place in Botswana, this performance of the ultra-smooth ‘Better Days’ threads together Yolngu Matha, English and Bemba languages in an incredible mix… this is one exclusive you don’t want to miss!
  • Brisbane popsters Ball Park Music released their latest record Ball Park Music – The Album back in October to much fanfare. We caught up with the band at Brisbane venue The Triffid this week, to catch them performing new single ‘Cherub’
  • It’s been a huge year for Vika & Linda. They entertained us with weekly lockdown performances from home, while their gorgeous gospel album Sunday (The Gospel According To Iso) debuted at #2. It wouldn’t be Making Gravy without them so don’t miss them performing one of their most-loved hits, filmed at Melbourne’s St Michael Uniting Church
  • Promising new music in 2021 is multi-award winner Dan Sultan, joined on The Sound this week with Darwin’s Leah Flanagan. Dan performs a stunning version of his ode to inner-city Melbourne – ‘Old Fitzroy’, captured live at the Hayden Orpheum Picture Palace in Cremorne, NSW
  • Hey ho let’s go! Alex Lahey loves Christmas songs – so much so that she released her own version of the Ramones’ classic ‘Merry Christmas (I Don’t Want To Fight Tonight)’. We catch Alex at Melbourne’s Sidney Myer Music Bowl
  • Acclaimed singer/songwriter Alex The Astronaut released her debut record The Theory of Absolutely Nothing in 2020, scoring a triple j Feature Album. She joins us to perform her latest song ‘I Think You’re Great’, live from Brisbane’s Riverstage

That’s it for us in 2020. A huge thank you to each of the performers and special guest hosts who’ve appeared on The Sound to date… It’s been a pleasure working with you – and we look forward to doing it all again!

Lastly, to our viewers: thank you for embracing our new live music TV show so warmly. Much of The Sound was produced in Melbourne, during a harsh COVID lockdown. We’ve received thousands of messages and social media posts and reading how much you’ve loved tuning into The Sound each week has made it even more worthwhile.

Don’t miss The Sound: Making Gravy Christmas Special – Sunday 20 December at 6pm on ABC and iview.

Where are you based? Currently, I’m in sunny Govan. A stones through away from the Clyde River. Sitting in my studio answering my third interview of the day! That no mean city they call Glasgow. Glesvegas! How did it feel to release your debut artist album, The Last King of Scotland, last month? It was a pure mix of emotions actually. Overly proud, a little relieved. But also sad and sort of Stockholm Syndrome. This has been a labour of love for the last 2 years. I’ve fallen in love with, out of love. It’s kept me driven, focused and inspired throughout this horrific year. Now I feel a bit lost! Like the vulnerable mother. Watching their kid walk into school for the first time. It’s flew the nest, into the wilderness. To be devoured by whomever it falls upon. I couldn’t have asked for a better reception to be honest. The reactions and support around the world have completely blown my expectations to pieces. What is behind the album title? It’s pretty much an acknowledgment, a nod - to the country I love. The place that inspires me. You can travel the globe week in week out. But nothing beats the feeling of home. And little self proclamation as well just for good measure! Did you do anything special to celebrate the album launch? Yes. I officially launched the album from arguably Scotland’s iconic venues, The Arches. "It only seemed right to take it back inside those hallowed brick walls of The Arches. When I moved to Glasgow from Orkney in 2008, it felt like every other night out ended up here. What started out as a hobby turned into an addiction. The addiction led to an education. A pilgrimage to this clubbing mecca we all know and love. Nowhere could be more fitting. I have to say, I had mixed emotions reading back all the comments. So many stories, experiences, shared by people, tagging their circles of friends, clubbers - bringing all that together felt even more special than the stream itself. And it really brought home just how special The Arches was. An institution in it's own right. Friendships forged, memories set in stone. There was only one place I could have launched this album. Egypt has the Pyramids. China has the Great Wall. Glasgow has “Oor Arches."  From Paul Van Dyk to Gary Go, theres a host of huge collaborations on the album. How did these come about? I worked with a plethora of international artists on this album. Hailing from Berlin to LA. London to Oban. Some were heroes, others were friends. Then some were just insanely talented songwriters. But all with one thing in common. The potential enrich my sound and add a new, exciting twist. Otherwise, is there any point in collaborating? I’m a control freak when it comes to the studio. Thus I’m not ideal for collaborating with. I need to have my stamp on everything. I know how I want it to sound. The track is already finished in my head before I’ve even written it. If I don’t realise that vision, then the track is dead in the water for me. So collaborating is difficult for me. Unless I am passionate about the artist, and the potential outweighs the compromise. All these artists ticked that box. Some tracks began as singles. Awakening with Paul was a melody I had sitting on my computer for around 8 years. Until it finally came to life as a demo for Vandit. Then Paul decided to join me on the record and collaborate. Other tracks started out as indie demos. Happy Hours was an Ed Sheehan style pop record before drafted in DC Breaks who turned it into a rib rattling D&B masterpiece. The track with Gary Go was originally a sort of progressive indie track. My manager John brokered a deal at ADE, Amsterdam. Basically give me a shot at the stems and subsequently turning it into a brooding crossover Trance meets cinematic Rock cut. Each collaboration has its own wee story. But they are all with artists that excite and energise my sound. Whats your creative process like? It’s pretty temperamental to be honest. It comes in random waves so I always need to near my laptop if I’m not in the studio. Some of the best melodies have come to me in a dream. There have been tracks finished backstage before I walk out in front of 5000 people. Other tracks have been started on airport floors and finished in hotel rooms. I have no control. But one thing I’ve noticed is if if I’m going through a particularly rough time, I’m able to channel this into the most emotional and thought provoking music. It’s like a supernatural ability. The only problem is I have to go suffer or experience unwanted feeling to channel it. Other times I’ll be in the kitchen making a cup of tea, hear an advert from the TV and bang - I’ll have an instant hair raising topline melody. I can tap inspiration from a multitude of sources. But emotions and experiences are most fruitful for me. Can you tell us about your approach to production and recording? After the bolt of inspiration - which could be a melody, a bassline, a hook idea - then comes the groundwork. Putting the scaffolding up to host this ultimate vision. From there it’s like a process of jenga. Building the foundations, taking away, adding. Until you find the winning formula. And achieve that ultimate vision. Who inspired you to make electronic music? Initially my mum. She got me into Judge Jules. From there, I distinctly remember hearing one of his live sets from Creamfields 2001 I think it was. He played a track called Angelic - Stay With Me. It was a live broadcast and I’ll never forget the reaction. The screams. Whistles. Horns.  I was 11 years old. So I wasn’t aware there was a producer sitting in a room making these sounds gel in harmony, but I knew I wanted the ability to create that energy and emotion. When the time comes, where are you most excited about playing live? Mexico for it’s electric, hot blooded atmopshere. But closer to home, Glasgow. Here we fucking go. And what track from the album are you most excited to play in front of fans? Kismet Energy. It’s a high octane, euphorically driven Hard House track. It sums up my journey from the past. My influences. An era that shaped me but reimagined through my eyes. As I wasn’t actually old enough to live it.  What can we expect next from Will Atkinson? I’m putting the finishing touches on one last single to close out this shitter  of a year. It’s a 145bpm power Trancer. The melody will break your heart. There are multiple climaxes. You’ll be left a hollowed out shell after listening to it. There’s a strong sense of hope, maybe a feeling of loss. 7 or so minutes of relentless ecstasy. It’s called The Last Rave On Earth.  ‘Will Atkinson’s album ‘The Last King of Scotland’ is Out Now on Black Hole Recordings. Get it here: https://will.complete.me/lastkingofscotland

Will Atkinson

by the partae December 16, 2020
written by the partae

We spoke to trail blazing trance producer Will Atkinson around the recent release of his debut album on legendary Dutch label Black Hole Recordings. A mammoth 17-track project, ‘Last King of Scotland’ is a testament to the extraordinary talent honed by the thirty-year-old and quickly reached No. 2 in Beatport’s Top 100 chart and topped their Top 100 Trance Releases. Spanning the realms of trance, techno, drum’n’bass and spoken word, the album is a genre-defying debut that blends harder sounds with more progressive, melodic stylings…

What is behind the album title?

It’s pretty much an acknowledgment, a nod – to the country I love. The place that inspires me. You can travel the globe week in week out. But nothing beats the feeling of home. And little self proclamation as well just for good measure!

EMMIT FENN UNVEILS STUNNING NEW SINGLE ‘WHAT FALLING IN LOVE IS FOR’

Emmit Fenn has established his unique sound over the past few years. His debut single ‘Painting Greys’ lived at #1 on Spotify’s Global Viral Charts for 7 days straight when it first released. Emmit went on to release multiple EPs, produce songs for Billie Eilish (bitches broken hearts), Ry X, Lolo Zouai and many more, and even score a TV show for Quentin Tarantino’s music supervisor.

Today, Emmit blesses us with his last single of 2020 and it’s the original and acoustic version of ‘What Falling In Love Is For’. The delicate and minimal vocals will have the song left on repeat.

If this is a sign of what is to come, Emmit Fenn’s debut album in 2021 is definitely one to look out for.
