Top Arts 2020 The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia at Federation Square | 13 March – 12 July 2020 | Free entry The annual Top Arts showcase returns for its 26th year presenting artworks from Victoria’s brightest emerging student artists at The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia from 13 March 2020. Drawn from over 1,700 submissions from schools across Victoria, Top Arts 2020 presents artworks from 43 students who have excelled in VCE Art and Studio Arts. Themes explored by the exhibiting artists include mental health, the impact of technology on everyday life, diversity and identity. Working across mediums including painting, sculpture, performance art, theatre, photography and animation, students have undertaken comprehensive research to create innovative and complex artworks. Tony Ellwood AM, Director, NGV said ‘Top Arts 2020 showcases the amazing breadth of young artists using their voice to speak out against injustice and generate awareness of issues and ideas that concern the youth of today. This is our 26th year of Top Arts and we’re so proud to continue to support and celebrate art education and provide more opportunities for students to engage with the arts and share their art with peers.’ Artworks in the exhibition are selected by a panel of four judges: Rachael Miller, Victorian Curriculum And Assessment Authority (VCAA) State Reviewer VCE Art; Giuliana D'Angelo, VCAA State Reviewer VCE Studio Arts; Julie Bond, VCAA Regional Representative and David Menzies, NGV Educator and Top Arts curator. Exhibition highlights include Zach Smyrnis’s Progress Comics 2019, a vibrant series of comic book covers titled The Patriarchy Punishers, The Uni-Diverse Command and The LGBTeam. Influenced by street artist Keith Haring and comic book writer Frank Miller the work showcases characters inspired by modern day activists such as Malala Yousafzai, Antoni Porowski, and Lizzo fighting for gender, sexuality and race equality. Race and identity are resonant themes throughout the exhibition. Angelo Ooi’s ceramic vessels Transience 2019 and Manifestations 2019 draw inspiration from his Australian upbringing and Malaysian-Chinese heritage. Dusty Diddle’s interactive protest artwork An Index of Childhood Memories, Anger and Intervention 2019 features 32 hand drawn postcards stored in a filing cabinet reflecting the artist’s wish to positively challenge racism, having experienced it firsthand.  Portraiture also features extensively, including Shae Jones’s Portrait of Murrundindi 2019, a large scale painting depicting Wurundjeri Elder Murrundindi. In her self-portrait patchwork 2019, Cat Distell combines different materials and textures to challenge our understanding of the fabric of identity. Presenting a unique exploration of technology’s influence on society, Ignatz Cady Freer’s absurdist theatre film Tubularis Acrobatics 2019 features three screens with actors performing repetitive tasks in which their actions become more interactive but also increasingly disconnected as the film progresses.  In a moving reflection of suburban life, Lucy Randall takes inspiration from her 87 year-old neighbour as he runs around the streets of Hampton in the hyper realistic sculpture The Shuffler 2019. Building on the success of Top Arts 2019, which welcomed over 25,000 students and teachers to exhibition and learning programs and events, Top Arts 2020 will be complemented by a dynamic schedule of social and learning opportunities including artist presentations and virtual tours for students in regional and remote areas. Programming also includes introductory talks and folio viewings to inspire and support current VCE students in their Art and Studio Art studies. Top Arts is a part of the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority’s (VCAA) annual VCE Season of Excellence showcasing outstanding VCE and VCE VET students through a festival of concerts, exhibitions, film screenings and a research presentation program. Top Arts 2020 is FREE and on display from 13 March 2020 – 12 July 2020 at the Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia at Federation Square. With just over a month to go until hotly anticipated boutique alpine music festival Snow Machine lands on the pristine slopes of Japans’ Hakuba Ski Resort this March, event organisers today unleashed their second wave of acts performing over the four-day event.   Australia continues to provide a wealth of antipodean talent with legendary producers Yolanda Be Cool, indie-pop shiner Pearl The Girl, Sydney electro-producer Tori Levett, Melbourne’s R&B queen Mimi and rising duo Happiness Is Wealth added to proceedings. From Japan, a formidable run of acts from the worlds of pop and electronica make their way to Hakuba Valley, including Tokyo’s underground house pioneer Chida, eye-popping, electro-pop duo FEMM (Far East Mention Mannequins), the globe-trotting Gonno, Rainbow Disco Club’s Kikiorix, revered Sapporo sound designer and producer Kuniyuki Takahashi, party-starter Mayurashka, pioneering house producer Shinichiro Yokota and the inimitable Soichi Terada with his decade-spanning selection of house cuts. Already establishing itself as a go-to bucket-list event before a beat has even dropped, Asia’s first ever snow-based festival promises to open up an exciting new chapter in the continent’s rich music entertainment history.   Speaking about the additions to the festival’s line-up, organisers explained they're "pleased to round out the lineup with some of our all-time favourite Japanese DJs and local talent. Following the announcement of international acts including Kevin Morby, The Blind Boys of Alabama and Hand Habits plus our own Alex Cameron, Brunswick Music Festival has today delivered its full 2020 program. Running March 9 - 22, it's about as Brunswick as hosing down your concrete. Refurbished, revamped and raring to go, the festival hub returns as Mechanica at Brunswick Mechanics Institute. Still a mystery to many, the prized BMF venue that premiered in 2019, Estonian House also returns; providing the chance to experience some incredible artists inside Brunswick's stunning best kept secret. Sheer Mag (USA) return to Melbourne, bringing their huge energy, pure passion, call-to-arms attitude and total defiance of the powers that be, all the way from Philadelphia to fill the rock'n'roll hole in our heart. Seeker Lover Keeper, the musical meld of Sarah Blasko, Holly Throsby and Sally Seltmann, is a triple treat with a double feature: appearing in conversation with Fee B-Squared, before alighting the Estonian House stage with Harmony Byrne. Did someone order the six course degustation? Brunswick Music Feastival will be serving up a delicious and nutritious aural menu with the likes of Crepes, Eggy, Sunfruits, Baked Beans, Long Lunch and Biscotti on Wednesday March 11. ARIA nominated Mama Kin Spender will be performing their first Melbourne show in over a year with the harmonious backing of twenty-something strong First Chorus Band of Singers choir, and C. W. Stoneking will mesmerise the Estonian House audience on Friday March 13 – storyteller, genre-defier and a voice as unique as his every performance, this is a headlining spot not to be missed.  Sui Zhen's multi-disciplinary craft will weave a landscape of love, loss and utopian dreams on Sunday March 15, while on Tuesday 17 March Xylouris White will enchant with a collaboration that is curiously comparable to the heritage and culture of Brunswick itself. Rejoice in the rise of imbi and Cry Club; the next generation of music makers and status quo shakers, forging paths and winning hearts on a very special weekend at the Brunswick Mechanics Institute. And that's not all – Dyson Stringer Cloher, Hayley Mary, Elsy Wameyo, Elizabeth, Rolling Blackouts C.F., The Merindas, Pinch Points, MOD CON, On Diamond, Ajak Kwai, Ziggy Ramo, Diimpa and more all lend their unique flair to the festival. Like a fabric store fever dream, you're guaranteed to find something unusual and alluring in the lineup. Plus; a highlight of the Brunswick calendar, Sydney Road Street Party returns on Sunday March 1 with another perfect afternoon of free tunes and free rein over the suburb's centre strip. Six offical street stages, five local venue stages,  a brand new food truck park featuring Triple R DJs, the Blak Dot Gallery Artist Market, and it wouldn't be a Brunswick party without a plant sale (featuring Noisy Ritual wines). Like picking fruit off your neighbours lemon tree, #BMF2020 celebrates what is quintessentially, charmingly and blissfully Brunswick. On the eve of Labour Day, Novel will host world-renowned artists Nina Kraviz and Aurora Halal for their long-overdue Melbourne club shows. Prepare yourself to be treated to a duo of world-class techno practitioners... Nina Kraviz (RUS) If anyone can stake a claim for being techno's biggest drawcard, it would be Russia's most famous dance music export, Nina Kraviz. She is one of the most talked-about names in contemporary dance music, a popular dance identity who has transmogrified the underground scene by becoming a social and cultural identity. It's easy to get sidetracked by the media attention following Kraviz, but for those tuned in to the nuances of dance music know she is a once-in-a-generation artist and a true tastemaker. For proof, look no further than her Trip imprint. It is littered with productions that sounds like it was sourced from a distant future where exceptional artists operate on as yet undiscovered frequencies. The label is fresh, exciting and increasingly impressive. Her DJ sets can be a musical voyage bordering on the fantastical, they can include everything from forgotten classics to modern techno rooted in experimental layers. Nina Kraviz will go down as a zeitgeist defining artist and she deserves your attention. Don't miss out on the opportunity to see her first Australian club performance since 2013. Nina Kraviz DJ set from Warehouse Project (Aphex Twin curated event) Aurora Halal (USA) Joining Nina Kraviz will be the shadowy and psychedelic sounds of New Yorker Aurora Halal. As the creator of influential Brooklyn party series Mutual Dreaming and the Sustain-Release event, Aurora has positioned herself as one of America's foremost authorities of imaginative and unique techno. Her distinctive sound has found favour with forward-thinking global events including Unsound, Atonal and Nachtdigital and regular bookings at worldwide clubs including Berghain. An Aurora Halal performance is coloured with a hazy sensuality and metallic dance floor intensity that's at turns playful, dark, acidic, hard, euphoric and emotionally vulnerable. Or as she explained in her Breaking Through feature with Resident Advisor: "I want evocative images, hypnotic motifs—overwhelming surges of feelings, risky combinations and even uncomfortable moments, or else I'd rather go home." This will be Aurora Halal's first Australian show in three years. Tickets via HANDSOMETOURS.COM Astral People, Handsome Tours and Whatslively are thrilled to announce the debut Australian and New Zealand tour of JAY1. At the forefront of the UK's rap scene, JAY1 is finally bringing his self-assured swagger down under. Despite being a relative newcomer to the scene, with his first EP ‘One Wave’ released at the start of 2019, he has made some serious waves both in the UK and globally. His sound spans bouncing dancehall, snappy trap and classic grime. With candid lyrics, bristling in self-confidence, that take centre stage over simple, catchy beats. Originally rapping as Young Jay, JAY1 started making music seriously in 2016 after moving to Coventry. Since then he’s released a string of singles including ‘That’s My Bae’, ‘Good Vibes’ and ‘Becky’ which have built him a loyal fanbase.   2019 was a big year for JAY1 it saw him release his breakout single ‘Your Mrs’. The song had strong chart success in the UK, with the music video hitting 1 million views on YouTube after just three days.   He also set off on a sold out headline tour of the UK and Ireland, as well as landing a spot on the remix of Russ and Tion Wayne’s 'Keisha & Becky', an appearance on Charlie Sloth’s Fire in the Booth radio show and a feature in the Guardian ‘'A funny accent draws bare attention': how regional rappers stormed the chart’.   The end of 2019 saw him release an instant party starter in the form of his latest single ‘Million Bucks’. Meet 20-year-old songwriter-producer Max Leone, the newest artist signed to The Darkroom (behind Billie Eilish), who today releases his debut single 'First Grade' off a forthcoming EP. Described by Paper Mag as "a real winner, complete with smooth vocals and sticky melodies", listen to 'First Grade' HERE. Picking up the guitar at age 7, Leone quickly developed a passion for playing and quickly turned to the violin and piano as well. Countless after-school hours spent practicing, composing as well as learning electronic production via YouTube, led Leone to attend the prestigious Berklee College Of Music as a guitar principal. After his first year, Leone decided to take the chance and leave Berklee for Los Angeles to pursue music full time. Throughout his debut EP, Leone tells his story of navigating a new city alone while chasing a potentially far-fetched dream. He explores themes of self-doubt, longing for anything familiar, and coping with 'modern isolation': keeping up appearances on social media while silently suffering. Inspired by some of music's all-time greats including Otis Redding, John Mayer, Nina Simone, among others, Leone's music is defined by his acoustic-driven songwriting combined with electronic-tinged, urban-pop production. His songs are immediate, recalling the soulful bedroom pop of Omar Apollo or the pop-inflected R&B of Khalid. Written and recorded in one day, 'First Grade' (produced by Luke Niccoli who has worked with Joji, Miya Folick, Taylor Janzen), deals with disappointment, accepting people as they are and realizing perfection is an impossible feat. Max Leone's debut shows to be announced soon, stay tuned for more.   'First Grade' is out via The Darkroom, buy/stream it now. ALGIERS new album There Is No Year is out now!

by the partae January 21, 2020
written by the partae
Praise for There Is No Year

“So consumed will you be by the rich and impassioned performances, you’ll instantly find yourself giving into the penetrating rhythm and blues, exalting urban grooves and sensational soul at play.” – Australian Guitar Magazine

“A victory for the thinking person.” – Beat, 8/10

“There Is No Year is an urgent and crucial statement from a band seething with intent” – STACK

“A heady concoction of post-punk, ’60s soul and political insight” – NME, ★★★★

“Electrifying and unpredictable” – The Guardian, ★★★★

Album Of The Week – The Line Of Best Fit

Following singles ‘Dispossesion’, ‘Void’ and ‘We Can’t Be Found’, London/NYC four-piece release their highly anticipated third album There Is No Year via Matador Records / Remote Control.

There Is No Year was recorded in New York throughout 2019 by childhood friends and Atlanta natives Franklin James Fisher, Ryan Mahan and Lee Tesche, as well as drummer Matt Tong (ex-Bloc Party), alongside producers Randall Dunn (Sunn O))), Earth, Oren Ambarchi) and Ben Greenberg (Zs, Uniform, The Men). The album is titled after author and fellow Atlanta native Blake Butler’s novel of the same name, a major inspiration to the band over the course of the album’s making.

“Even those aware of the ideals of this outspoken four-piece will find their latest direction on There Is No Year traversing unprecedented ground,” says Butler in his bio for the album. From the instant synth-pulse of the opening seconds of There is No Year, it’s clear that Algiers have set out to stake new ground, internally as much as sonically. At the forefront of this evolution is the centrality of power housed in Algiers’ multi-instrumentalist lead vocalist, Franklin James Fisher, whose voice and words provide the backbone of the album, his lyrics sourced entirely from an epic poem, Misophonia, composed during his search for meaning amidst a protracted personal period of anxiety and lack.

There Is No Year encompasses future-minded post-punk R&B from the trapped heart of ATL, where they began; to industrial soundscapes à la 4AD-era Scott Walker or Iggy & Bowie’s Berlin period; to something like the synthetic son of Marvin Gaye and Fever Ray. The whip-tight rhythm section of multi-instrumentalist Ryan Mahan and Matt Tong moves back and forth from infectious menace to sci-fi soundtrack to big band fever dream. Mahan’s beat programming and synth constructions fill out the fibrous threshold, while Tesche’s sound-sleeves and aural-layering shapeshift into a richly polished means of exploration, revealing more and more the deeper you delve.

“[A] dazzling electro-pop distraction from reality.” – The Music ****
[Everything Else Has Gone Wrong] – Feature Album, Double J
“Excellent” – Q Magazine ****
“A welcome and intensely moving return” – Sunday Times Culture
“Could well be their finest album yet…” – Evening Standard ****
“the ability to break your heart and heal it from verse to chorus” – DIY ****
“…one of indie music’s most inventive bands” – The Independent ****
“Everything is right about this comeback” – Daily Star ****
“A rallying cry for the age of anxiety” – The Telegraph ****
Bombay Bicycle Club are very proud to release their new album – and first in five years – Everything Else Has Gone Wrong, out now via the band’s own label Mmm… Records / Caroline Australia. The album is met with glowing reviews internationally, and profiled here in Australia as Feature Album on Double J all this week.

The record was largely written in Cornwall and recorded in the US, alongside Grammy Award-winning producer John Congleton (St. Vincent/Sharon Van Etten/War on Drugs). It features latest single and title track ‘Everything Else Has Gone Wrong’ and the band’s euphoric returning single ‘Eat, Sleep, Wake (Nothing But You)‘, as celebrated by international tastemakers including Pitchfork (“Invigorating hooks”), Billboard (“Rhythmic and filled with stunning melodies”) and NME (“A long awaited comeback”).

Bombay Bicycle Club have continued to grow, develop and evolve since the release of their debut album, I Had The Blues But I Shook Them Loose, back in 2009 when they signalled their arrival as young teenagers. New music joins Bombay Bicycle Club’s #1 selling, Mercury Music Prize nominated fourth album So Long, See You Tomorrow (2014) – including Hottest 100 voted single ‘Luna’ (#98) – and sophomore album A Different Kind Of Fix (2011) – triple j Feature Album, including Hottest 100 voted single ‘Shuffle’ (#88).

Rarely in recent years has there been a British guitar band who have the craft and ability to avoid categorisation whilst uniting hundreds of thousands of fans across the globe. With an innate ear for melody and invention, the four-piece are a very welcome return to the fold just as British guitar music makes a timely renaissance.

It is the largest single wool store building in Victoria, built on a grand scale with considerable architectural refinement. It represents a peak of pastoral development when Australia rode on the sheep's back with the wool industry playing a significant role in the development of Australia, carrying it's economy post-World War 2 in what is now known as the 'post-war wool boom'. The venue is an addition to Untitled Group’s fast growing portfolio including Beyond the Valley, Pitch Music & Arts, Wildlands, Grapevine Gathering, and Ability Fest, as well as the company’s established management, booking & label divisions. Thick as Thieves search the globe looking for the most exciting underground artists of today, to bring you the freshest touring roster in Australia.  Sourcing the best local & international DJs, their events create a positive atmosphere that leaves our punters feeling good and doing good. Patrick Topping:  Carving a reputation as the contemporary face of British house and techno, Patrick Topping continues to garner widespread acclaim on account of his prolific production prowess and dynamic DJ sets. Soundtracking countless sunrise memories as resident of Jamie Jones’ famed Paradise parties at Ibiza’s DC-10, Patrick’s now 50-release strong back-catalogue is bursting with iconic dance-floor records on labels such as Hot Creations, Truesoul and Relief Records, with further remixes for Calvin Harris and Booka Shade charting Patrick’s meteoric rise. Armed with an arsenal of career defining productions in the form of the Beatport chart- topping ‘Be Sharp Say Nowt’, Green Velvet collaboration ‘Voicemail’, and 2014’s Ibiza track of the season ‘Forget’, Patrick’s far reaching appeal has seen him play numerous festivals including Coachella, Awakenings, Ultra, and Tomorrowland. As well as completing several tours of Australia, Europe, South America, Asia and South Africa. Patrick has performances confirmed for the year ahead including Movement Detroit, Kappa FuturFestival and for the first time is hosting his own stage a festival, at London’s Lovebox. With Patrick reaching number 11 in Resident Advisor’s top DJs poll, landing three DJ Awards, one DJ MAG ‘Best of British’ Award and becoming one of Mixmag’s cover stars the northern powerhouse now enters a refined and developed chapter of his career. The recent birth of Patrick’s own label, TRICK, has provided a home for the UK artist to exhibit his versatility as a producer, as well as a platform to showcase the wealth of the emerging talent which he has been pushing in his DJ sets. Following the recent finale of his acclaimed Motion event series, the UK producer looks set to take things to the next level throughout 2019. Skream: As one of the UK’s best-loved selectors Skream has enjoyed the kind of consistency most DJs and producers can only dream of. His passion for collecting and playing music is unrelenting; disco, house, techno and everything in between… it runs deep into his core and he lives it every single day. Still only in his early thirties, Skream has achieved more in the last 15 years than most people do in a lifetime, yet his hunger and enthusiasm is akin to that of a man who is only just getting started. Tracks like ‘Rollercoaster’ (ft. Sam Frank) and his remixes of Duke Dumont ‘Need You’ and ‘Infinity’ by Infinity Ink helped introduce the world to Skream’s shift in styles, while his mix output from 2013, cemented the change in direction seamlessly blending a variety of 4x4 styles across all of his tracks. Parallel to these pivotal releases he also showcased his eclectic tastes at his Skreamizm parties across the UK and the rest of the world, and so a new chapter began. Matador: As DJ Awards’ 2016 Electronic Live Performer, Matador is a revolutionary live artist with a shining reputation for versatility, whilst never compromising on quality. Accolades have been showered on the Dublin-born producer, from proud ambassador of the NEVE 5088 Console, and Richie Hawtin’s PLAYDifferently MODEL1 mixer, his tenure as an ENTER resident at their worldwide events, to his consistent spot in RA’s Live Artist poll, bringing him rapid worldwide acclaim and a devoted worldwide fan base of clubbers and peers alike. Still thirsty for new worlds to conquer, Matador, aka Gavin Lynch, recently took on a new role as label boss for his RUKUS imprint. Fontaines D.C. met as a quintet in Dublin, influenced and driven in equal measure by the rich history of their hometown’s counter-culture, their response has been to make concise and immediately authentic indie-punk that has done anything but fall on deaf ears. Their debut album, Dogrel (released in early 2019), spits, snarls and snaps with the very best of ‘em, but it also yearns, like the greatest Irish music must do. Their Mercury Prize-nominated debut earned the band incredibly high praise in the likes of Pitchfork, NPR, New York Times, Rolling Stone and many more. The Guardian even went as far as calling it a ‘perfect debut’.  The band have toured extensively over the last year, selling out their last three UK and EU headline tours, as well as a sold-out US tour. Tickets to Fontaines D.C. go on sale Thursday at 10am local. If their rapid upward trajectory is anything to go by, these tickets will move just as swiftly.
