YOUNG FATHERS REVEAL NEW SINGLE ‘TOY’
Taken from their third album Cocoa Sugar Out next Friday, March 9 on Ninja Tune via Inertia Music

With just nine days to go until the release of their third album Cocoa Sugar, Young Fathers(Alloysious Massaquoi, Graham ‘G’ Hastings and Kayus Bankole) today raise anticipation levels even further with the release of a brand new track. ‘Toy’ is the third track to be revealed from the album, following on from lead song ‘Lord’ (which announced the band’s return in November) and current single ‘In My View’. It’s another enticing glimpse of what to expect from Young Fathers on Cocoa Sugar: something typically unique and exhilarating, but leaner, more muscular and self-assured than ever before. The record has already been met with widespread acclaim; described by Mojo as “an avant-pop masterclass” and Uncut as “a heady joy” while Q Magazine stated “‘Cocoa Sugar’ finds Young Fathers at a fascinating juncture: opening up, moving forward, but still existing in a sonic hall-of-mirrors all of their own.”

Cocoa Sugar will be available on CD, LP, limited LP and via all digital services. It features a striking visual aesthetic, with cover photography from Julia Noni and creative direction from Tom Hingston and is set to build on the success of the group’s previous two albums; 2014’s Mercury Prize-winning DEAD and 2015’s White Men Are Black Men Too. Written and recorded throughout 2017 in the band’s basement studio and HQ, Cocoa Sugar sees Young Fathers operating with a newfound clarity and direction, and is without doubt their most confident and complete statement to date.

Young Fathers announce new album ‘Cocoa Sugar’; Reveal single ‘In My View’

YOUNG FATHERS ANNOUNCE NEW ALBUM COCOA SUGAR

Out Friday, March 9 on Ninja Tune via Inertia Music
New single ‘In My View’ released today;

Watch the Jack Whiteley directed video here

In November last year, Young Fathers announced that they’d completed work on a new album. The trio – Alloysious Massaquoi, Graham ‘G’ Hastings and Kayus Bankole – marked the news by previewing a brand new song, ‘Lord’ and a subsequent accompanying video. Just like their previous standalone 2017 single ‘Only God Knows’ (written for the Trainspotting T2 film and described by director Danny Boyle as “the heartbeat of the film”), ‘Lord’ provided an enticing glimpse of what to expect from Young Fathers’ third full album; something typically unique and exhilarating, but leaner, more muscular and self-assured than ever before.

Today, Young Fathers announce full details of that album. Titled Cocoa Sugar, the twelve track album is out Friday, March 9 on Ninja Tune via Inertia Music and follows the group’s previous two albums; 2014’s Mercury Prize-winning DEAD and 2015’s White Men Are Black Men Too. Written and recorded throughout 2017 in the band’s basement studio and HQ, Cocoa Sugar sees Young Fathers operating with a newfound clarity and direction, and is without doubt their most confident and complete statement to date.

To celebrate news of the new album, Young Fathers today reveal a brand new single ‘In My View’. Accompanied by a video directed by Jack Whiteley, ‘In My View’ is available now on all digital services, while the video can be seen below.

Cocoa Sugar will be available on CD, LP, limited LP and via all digital services. It features a striking visual aesthetic, with cover photography from Julia Noni and creative direction from Tom Hingston.

The album is available to pre-order from today via https://Inertia.lnk.to/YoungFathers_CS.

Young Fathers release “Lord” video

YOUNG FATHERS RELEASE “LORD” VIDEO New album set for release on Ninja Tune via Inertia Music in 2018

“If wishes were horses, then beggars would ride”

Having recently announced the completion of a new album – set for release on Ninja Tune via Inertia Music in 2018 – Young Fathers today present the video for “Lord“, directed by Rianne White.

WATCH “LORD” VIDEO

Speaking about the “Lord” video, Young Fathers’ Alloysious Massaquoi states: “For me, the video stemmed from… Like how do you describe an emotion, clearly and precisely when you’re completely immersed in it all? An act of internal withdrawal from the outside world, when all you need from the outside world is for someone, anyone, to show they care.” while Graham ‘G’ Hastings add “Kayus brought a rocking horse into the studio one day. God knows why. After we wrote the song, Ally sat on it, took his top off and started riding majestic. Then we thought, why not?”

PRAISE FOR “LORD”

“Lands somewhere between the godlike nature of ‘The Life Of Pablo’
and the scuzzy electronics of ‘Yeezus’.
”
The FADER

“Marrying glitchy, industrial chaos with a choir’s soulful uplifting delivery, ‘Lord’
traverses through some pretty obscure terrain that doesn’t allow much room
for complacency. One minute you’re revelling in the soaring gospel-like
harmonies, the next a guitar thrashes through the tranquillity perking
you up ensuring you don’t let your guard down again.
”
I OH YOU

“A beautiful piece of music that deserves your attention.”
Stereogum

“Gospel gorgeousness.”
The Guardian

Young Fathers release new single “Lord”

YOUNG FATHERS RELEASE NEW SONG “LORD” Out now on Ninja Tune via Inertia Music

“We’ve just finished a new album,
and It’s about fucking time.
Anyway, here’s a song from it, a song called LORD.
See youz soon.”

Young Fathers

Edinburgh’s Young Fathers return with new single “Lord“, out now on Ninja Tune via Inertia Music. The typically undefinable track mixes gospel, hip hop and psychedelic tones and is taken from a yet to announced new album, out next year.

LISTEN TO “LORD”

Young Fathers are: ‘G’ Hastings, from Edinburgh, Alloysious Massaquoi, originally from Liberia via Ghana and Kayus Bankole, born in Edinburgh to Nigerian parents but partially raised in Maryland USA. Their live shows are complemented by Steven Morrison on drums.

The group formed after meeting at an under-16s hip hop night at the infamous Bongo Club in Edinburgh when they were all in their teens. They started writing and recording together almost immediately, initially on an old karaoke machine plugged into a cheap cassette recorder at G’s parents house.

In 2011 they set about recording a mixtape TAPE ONE in just over a week, finishing a track a day and having it available for download within two weeks of recording. They quickly followed this up with TAPE TWO, which was written and recorded in a similar fashion. Los Angeles based label, Anticon, discovered them online and within a few months had signed them for a short deal that saw both TAPEs officially released in 2013.

The group, meanwhile, continued to tour, gathering an impressive reputation as a formidable live act. They played all over Europe and made their US debut at SXSW in March 2013.

Following support from the BBC’s Zane Lowe and Lauren Laverne, and an appearance on influential USA talk show Jimmy Kimmel Live in 2014, TAPE TWO won Scottish Album Of The Year (The SAY Award), while their next album DEAD received the highly prestigious Mercury Prize for best album of 2014.

Immediately after winning the Mercury Prize, Young Fathers travelled to Berlin where they continued making a new album in a freezing basement in a building near the railway yards. Returning to the more familiar (and warmer) basement studio in Edinburgh to finish their latest album, White Men Are Black Men Too, which was released in April 2015 to widespread acclaim.

The band toured extensively throughout this time, touring the world including stops at Australia’s Listen Out in 2014, as well as Falls Festival, Field Day and an extensive run of sold out headline shows in the 2016.

In 2016, the band were invited to support Massive Attack on their UK and European tour after working together on Massive Attack’s single “Voodoo In My Blood”.

Young Fathers feature on 6 tracks on the Trainspotting T2 soundtrack, including “Only God Knows”, written specifically for the film.

Young Fathers, Jacques Greene, Daktyl Out Now

by the partae June 28, 2017

Daktyl
The Act Of Hesitation

Daktyl – the most recent signing to Counter Records, this week released his new EP The Act of Hesitation. The EP represents a marked shift from the the bass-heavy, jungle-driven tracks for which Daktyl is best known. On The Act of Hesitation Daktyl is embracing his singer-songwriter background, returning to a fundamental approach to his music – the result is a sonically distinct yet satisfying divergence from his previous material.

Tape One / Tape Two

The re-release of Young Father’s debut mixtape Tape One and it’s follow up Tape Two gives us a chance to reappraise two albums that sat firmly outside the mainstream in 2011/12 and still seem prescient today. Re-mastered by renowned engineer Mandy Parnell they retain the ability to create the feeling that they have been viciously ripped from the basement studio in Leith where they were recorded.

Jacques Greene
Feel Infinite Remixes

After the triumphant release of his album Feel Infinite earlier in the year, Jacques Greene has enlisted four unique takes on key tracks from the album. On offer we have the legendary Matthew Herbert, wedidit founder Shlohmo, vintage trance burner from Berlin up-and-comer Bwana and a bumping house cut from Baltra. This collection places Greene’s signature sound on four different dancefloors.
‘Feel Infinite’ is warm and inviting, a taut mix of R&B love
songs to finding your true self on the floor.
