THE XX share ‘We See You – Berlin’ short film!

by the partae December 6, 2017
written by the partae

The xx

Share ‘We See You – Berlin’

A short film about The xx and their fans by Sylvie Weber
The first of a series of ‘We See You’ films, supported by YouTube

In November 2016 – just over a year ago – The xx’s Romy Madly Croft, Oliver Sim and Jamie Smithannounced their return with a brand new single ‘On Hold’ and news of a third full length album, I See You. Recorded between New York, Marfa TX, Reykjavik, Los Angeles and London, and released in January 2017, I See You would go on to become a huge critical and commercial success, building on the achievements of The xx’s two previous albums, xx and Coexist. The xx’s three albums now have now sold over 4 million copies between them.

In the intervening twelve months, The xx embarked on an extensive I See You world tour that has seen them performing to millions of fans, including several festival headline appearances and a record breaking run of seven nights at London’s legendary Brixton Academy in front of over 35,000 hometown fans.

Today sees the release of ‘We See You – Berlin’, a short film supported by and exclusively available on YouTube that celebrates the incredibly close bond between The xx and their fans, affectionately turning the spotlight onto the band’s audience. Directed by Berlin-based filmmaker Sylvie Weber, the film features live and documentary footage from The xx’s headline set at Berlin’s Lollapalooza festival in September alongside intimate portraits of some of the people who attended the show. ‘We See You – Berlin’ sees Weber creating an emotive depiction of fans in this city, exploring their relationship with the band, and in turn the band’s relationship with the city and the fans there.

‘We See You – Berlin’ is the first in a series of ‘We See You’ films.

Of the collaboration, Sylvie Weber says: “My process as a filmmaker speaks to a consistent desire within me to unveil the character within, I keep an aesthetic and cinematic visual in mind when on set, cautiously leading the protagonists while allowing them to slowly become more themselves on screen.

In the case of ‘We See You’, coming across truly engaged and earnest individuals was not difficult, the vulnerability that The xx expose in their music is the basis for their incredibly close connection to the fans themselves. I think we’ve managed to represent in these four stories the feeling of the many millions who are so profoundly affected by the harmonies of Romy, Oliver and Jamie.”

While The xx add: “A huge thank you to Sylvie Weber for capturing some truly intimate moments from our show in Berlin earlier in the year. We’re genuinely moved by the incredibly beautiful portraits of our fans. We see you Berlin. We love you xx The xx”

The xx will return to Australia for a run of east coast shows in January 2018. Full dates and ticket links below.

“This isn’t a wholly new band, it is rather an extension of the band we knew, a maturation possibly, but definitely an expansion: of thought, emotion, confidence and expression.” – Sydney Morning Herald

“I See You…sounds like an attempt to incorporate everyone’s talents into a new version of their sound, one true to their roots but richer and more varied.” – Pitchfork, Best New Music

“Friends, I have some good news for you… 2017 will be superior to 2016. The xx have decreed it so.”– Herald Sun ★★★★

“I See You pulls off the feat of managing to sound both exactly like the xx and unlike anything they have done before.” – The Guardian ★★★★

“There is fanfare from the outset, heralding a new era for the xx…The group has managed to move unmistakably forward while still maintaining its unique sound.” – The Australian

“It’s the sound of the xx moving out of their natural habitat – the shadows – and towards the more experimental, wide-ranging palette that producer Jamie “xx” Smith painted… The future looks bright.”– Rolling Stone Australia ★★★★

“The difference between I See You and 2012’s Coexist is Jamie xx’s production; the inspired beats give every song a brimming optimism. A welcome, extroverted side to the band we haven’t seen before.” – Stack

“The xx come at us with a fresh new sound but, more than ever, their music has less to do with chromosomes and delivers two gentle kisses onto listeners’ cheeks.” – The Music

Edu Imbernon releases his third reworking for The xx (“Lips”)

The xx – Lips

(Edu Imbernon Remix) Young Turks Recordings / XL

STREAM
(Soundcloud)
(Spotify)

Emotive melodic electronic artist Edu Imbernon returns for his third remix of The xx, a feat only matched by the one and only Four Tet. The new re-work of the song “Lips” is taken from the band’s third and multi-nominated album, “I See You”, on Young Turks.

This follows on from his 2010 hit remix of “Crystalised“- which hit Beatport no 1 and 3.5m Spotify streams, and his follow up in 2013 of “Reunion“; but not forgetting his reworks of Tiga, Metronomy, Hot Natured, WhoMadeWho and Maya Jane Coles during this period.

In Edu’s own words: “This is now my third remix of maybe my favourite band of the current times, the xx. Back in 2010 I was honoured to remix “Crystalised” from their first album, and working on that changed my perspective on making music. I’m super happy to reimagine their music once again, with a different take on their song “Lips”.

THE XX share ‘On Hold (Jamie xx Remix)’ – THE PARTAE

by the partae September 15, 2017

The xx Share ‘On Hold (Jamie xx Remix)’ Watch Alasdair McLellan’s ‘On Hold’ Remix video

At the end of 2016, The xx announced their return and news of a new album (I See You) with the lead single ‘On Hold’. An undoubted highlight of one of the year’s most critically acclaimed albums, ‘On Hold’has quickly become one of The xx’s biggest songs to date.

Today, the band’s very own Jamie xx reveals his ‘On Hold’ remix – his first official remix in over four years. It comes accompanied by a ‘remix video’ from Alasdair McLellan, who made the original ‘On Hold’ video and has been a key I See You visual collaborator. McLellan also created videos for recent xx singles‘Say Something Loving’ and the star-studded ‘I Dare You’ video (a collaboration with The xx and Raf Simons which featured, among others, Millie Bobby Brown, Ashton Sanders, Paris Jackson, Lulu and Ernesto Cervantes).

‘On Hold (Jamie xx Remix)’ is available via all digital services. It will also be available as a limited (to 1000 copies worldwide) edition 12”, backed with Four Tet’s much talked-about remix of The xx’s ‘A Violent Noise’.

The xx will return to Australia in 2018 for an East Coast headline tour. These are The xx’s first Australian headline shows since they embarked on their 2013 tour, which saw them sell out multiple nights in advance at Sydney’s Hordern Pavilion and Melbourne’s Festival Hall. Fans are encouraged to act quickly to secure their tickets to witness The xx, one of pop’s brooding perfectionists. Tickets go on sale Monday 21 August, don’t miss out!

The xx Release video for ‘I Dare You’

by the partae July 7, 2017
written by the partae

Directed by Alasdair McLellan
In collaboration with Calvin Klein’s Raf Simmons

The xx today release a brand new music video for ‘I Dare You,’ the single taken from their acclaimed number one album I See You, out now via Young Turks / Remote Control Records. The ‘I Dare You’ video is directed by Alasdair McLellan in collaboration with The xx and Calvin Klein Chief Creative Officer Raf Simons. The video was filmed in Los Angeles at Lloyd Wright’s Sowden house and John Lautner’s Rainbow House and continues The xx’s longstanding visual collaboration with McLellan, who also directed the band’s ‘On Hold’ and ‘Say Something Loving’ videos, in addition to their collaboration on the It Could Be Love photo book zine.

Raf Simons also has had a longstanding appreciation of The xx – Jamie Smith, Romy Madley Croftand Oliver Sim – and was drawn to the band’s recent work with McLellan. Seeing a connection between the videos and his own work at Calvin Klein, Simons was pleased to collaborate on the third video of the trilogy, lending his eye to the architectural and atmospheric elements and utilising an eclectic cast including Millie Bobby Brown, Ashton Sanders, Paris Jackson, Lulu and Ernesto Cervantes.

Speaking about the video, the band say: “We are so happy to share our new video for ‘I Dare You’. Our love letter to Los Angeles, a city close to our hearts, where we wrote and recorded parts of our album ‘I See You’. This is the third video, our friend, the wonderful Alasdair McLellan has directed for us. He collaborated with a hero of ours, Raf Simons on the creative concept and direction. It was amazing to work with both of them and such a pleasure to meet and work with Millie, Paris, Ashton, Lulu and Ernesto! Thank you to Calvin Klein and everyone involved. We hope you enjoy watching! xx The xx.”

Released in January via Young Turks / Remote Control Records, The xx’s third album I See You has been their biggest critical and commercial success to date, reaching number one in charts around the world. On Friday, the band also released a deluxe version of the album online, featuring three new songs:‘Naïve’, ‘Seasons Run’ and ‘Brave For You (Marfa Demo)’.
