What is your name and role within Aphyxion?
Hey man! My name is Jais, and I play bass in Aphyxion. I take part in the graphic tasks in the band, and also manage our Instagram account.
How did you start?
10-12 years ago when we were in our early teens, we jammed together a lot, and played mostly rock covers, until some time in 2007 when we felt like we should start writing ‘our own shit’ (!) – so that’s when APHYXION, the band, begun!
Where are you based?
We are based in our home-town Ribe, in southern Denmark, an hour drive from northern Germany.
Please give an example of your music writing process?
Our guitarist and producer Jonas, has some ideas – partly in his head, and partly recorded – that he presents to the rest of us. From there on we add drums, bass and vocals, that’s the typical way. But for some of our songs, they’re almost solely created and written in the studio. Synths, effects and backup vocal is also added in the studio.
What are you working on right now?
We wanna go on tour, so that’s in the near future. We also always try to create new music.
What is your gear setup?
The drum kit is an extension of a simple standard set-up, with 3 toms, a single bass drum and the most basic cymbals.
For guitars we’ve been using an ENGL Powerball and a Peavy 6505 for a long time, but are currently making the transition into the world of Kemper Amps.
The bass set-up consists of a Microtubes b7k Ultra from Darkglass Electronics, and a Power Amp.
We also use Line6 Wireless gear, to get a more free feeling when jumping around on stage.
How would you describe your music genre?
Our music is very much a blend, and has elements from both melodic death metal, metalcore and lots of other genres as well.
Do you know any music theory?
Jonas (guitar) and I studied music in High School, so we learned some theory, but we were both always more focused on the practical part of music. With Jonas working in Hansen studios (Volbeat, Epica, Heaven Shall Burn, Amaranthe etc.), he’s also gained a lot of experience from other songwriters.
What are your plans for the future?
Keep the fun ball rolling – make more albums, go on more tours, keep loving what we do… Simple as that.
How did you get into music?
The town we grew up in has an awesome music community, and a lot of metal bands spawned there. So with the influence of our older brothers and our musically interested friends, we started playing together – mostly rock at first, but as our own taste matured into heavier things, so did the music we played, and soon enough we were making original metal music.
What are you listening to at the moment?
A big hit for me at the moment is British ARCHITECTS.
Who are your top 5 influences and icons?
For me it’s – Black Sabbath, In Flames, Raunchy, Bring Me The Horizon, Architects.
When are you playing next?
Our next show is at the Danish festival Smukfest in Skanderborg on the 10th of august. After that, our next show will be Supporting Metallica in Copenhagen.
