Arts Centre Melbourne is excited to announce that the break-out musical FANGIRLS, from award-winning playwright Yve Blake will make its Melbourne debut at the Playhouse Theatre from 28 April - 9 May as a part of a national tour. This energetic musical will be showing in Melbourne for the first time following sell-out crowds for Belvoir’s season at the Seymour Centre. “We've been dreaming of coming to Melbourne for years. When we premiered in 2019, some industrious teens started a petition to bring the show to Melbourne and I'm so happy that we can finally deliver on that wish,” says the creator of FANGIRLS - Yve Blake. “Even though this show is called FANGIRLS, it's not just about fans or girls. It's a show for anyone that has felt the sweet torture of a first crush, or who knows what it's like to be obsessed with something that isn't 'cool'.” The prolonged intermission between shows at the Playhouse Theatre will add an extra element to this performance, mirroring the excitement around the show as Arts Centre Melbourne create offerings for audiences to embrace the arts once again. “It’s incredible to have FANGIRLS as a part of our re-opening of the Theatres Building at Arts Centre Melbourne. This has been made possible thanks to the generous support of all those who donated to our Recovery Appeal,” says Arts Centre Melbourne’s Creative Producer, Theatre & Contemporary Performance – Daniel Clarke.   FANGIRLS  follows the uproarious story of Edna, a plucky misfit scholarship girl who believes that she alone can win the heart of the world’s biggest pop star: Harry. Sure, he has 38 million other fans, but for Edna, that’s merely a hurdle. Because there’s nothing she won’t do to prove to Harry that she’s the one. With a dazzling cast including AYDAN from The Voice, Danielle Barnes, Chika Ikogwe, Shubshri Kandiah, Ayesha Madon, James Majoos, Karis Oka, Tomáš Kantor and Shannen Alyce Quan, this critically acclaimed show is captivating and will leave you wanting more. This show is founded in Blake’s fascination for the way that society can see a mob of screaming fans as “embarrassing” if they’re female and at a pop concert, but “passionate” if they’re male and at a footy match. She set out to write the show she wished her 14-year-old self could have seen: a comedy all about the ways that the world tries to convince young women that they’re not as worthy as their brothers. “The response from audiences so far has been unreal. I'm so shook by all the fan art, the memes, and the crafts! I've seen people bring handmade signs like it's a pop concert, and even make custom jewellery,” says Blake. “People should see this show because it's a love letter to the awkward teenagers that we have all been, and also it's the perfect antidote to 2020. This show was designed to feel and sound like a thrilling pop concert, and after a year of no concerts, it really does hit differently.” Yve Blake is a decorated performer and playwright, awarded with the Inaugural Rebel Wilson Theatre Maker Scholarship (2016) and has been widely recognised for FANGIRLS with the Sydney Theatre Award for Best Mainstage Musical (2019), Matilda Award for Best Musical or Cabaret (2019) and AWQGI AWARD for Music Theatre (2020). Tickets on sale from 12pm, Wednesday 23 February via artscentremelbourne.com.au

FANGIRLS to make Melbourne debut

Following the premiere on Feb 22nd on triple j Unearthed, Melbourne musician Jiordy will release her first single for 2021, ‘Vigor’, on February 23, co-written and produced by Jahn Rae (bass player for Client Liaison). The new single follows on from 2020 releases ‘UR Dumb’, ‘Hmmm’ and ‘Weight in Water’, all which received national and global attention from the likes of Spotify, triple j, triple j Unearthed (full rotation) and notable music publications Tonedeaf, Purple Sneakers, Musicfeeds and The Music. ABOUT VIGOR An exciting exploration of the bounds of pop as a genre, ‘Vigor’ is about the act of responding to another person's vitality. In Jiordy’s own words: “Vigor is about feeding off someone else’s life-force; the kind that takes you to a heightened level. It's an ode to the inner fire that I believe we all possess, the kind that is ignited when we surround ourselves with people who make us feel elevated and alive”. Staying true to her signature ethereal sound and evocative visuals, ‘Vigor’ explores themes of energy, movement and growth, elements that are visually showcased through both the musical composition and aesthetic intricacies of the accompanying visuals. Lyrically, ‘Vigor’ was inspired by a poem of the same name that Jiordy penned at the end of 2020, reflective of her inner growth as an artist and creator. In Jiordy’s own words: “The slow pace of 2020 was a particularly grounding period for me, which facilitated a new sense of growth and evolution for both myself as an artist and as a human being. This sentiment led me to write a poem, which I titled Vigor, that felt reflective of the time. When I got back into the studio with my producer this year, we started to play around with different elements of sound anchored by a drum beat that was slowed down to a point where it almost flickered, like energy itself. I realised then how seamlessly the poem Vigor slotted into the instrumental track we had created.” Sonically, the shape-shifting track features atmospheric, glistening synths, hypnotic vocals and a robust drum loop that drives the song forward. Building to a climactic outro with a dance beat to match, layered synths usher the track to its intoxicating conclusion.  ‘Vigor’ also features the muffled sounds of children playing, an element inspired by Jiordy’s living proximity to a primary school and the buoyant echoes of children in the schoolyard that resonate through her home: “The boundless energy and lightness that children inherently possess was of significant inspiration to this track and has been incorporated through experimental soundbites woven throughout the instrumental component of the song” - Jiordy.  ‘Vigor’, will be available on all major streaming platforms on February 23rd.

Photo Credit: Dylan Bow Sydney duo Winterbourne are erupting into 2021 with their first venture into the world of cinema, ‘Revolutionary, Film’. The movie, which derives its name from the opening track of the band’s debut album, will premiere in March at three vintage cinemas along the East Coast of Australia. During these premieres, the duo will also make an in-person appearance to chat with the audience and perform new and unheard songs. ‘Revolutionary, Film’ also heralds the arrival of Winterbourne’s first live album, ‘A Brand New November’ which was recorded during the sold out Echo Of Youth national tour and soundtracks the film. The album will be released April 16th, with the first single ‘Steady My Bones’ out today. Written, directed, edited and produced by the band themselves, ‘Revolutionary, Film’ is a 90 minute manifestation of band-mates James Draper and Jordan Brady’s collective state of mind leading up to, during, and resulting from their debut album release and subsequent sold out show at Sydney's Metro Theatre. Sections of the show are interwoven with a running fictional commentary as the pair make their way from a live performance in Pitt St Mall to The Metro Theatre, grappling with questions of ambition, nostalgia, reflection and of course, revolution, along the way. WATCH ‘REVOLUTIONARY, FILM’ TRAILER HERE “We didn’t want to make a live show documentary about ourselves because we might be the only ones who’d watch it,” says James from Winterbourne. “But we’ve always had this idea of drawing a line between Pitt St Mall and the Metro Theatre because they’re on the same street but worlds apart” The band spent most of 2020 working on the project. With live music coming to a halt last year, ‘Revolutionary, Film’ is a welcome and immersive journey into the world of an Australian band on the rise. The highs of which they say they too often treat with cynicism rather than appreciation. “It’s impossible to appreciate the moment while you’re in it,” continues Jordan. “We’re constantly annoyed about that. So I guess the film tries to take us back and allows us to look around and figure out what the hell it all means." VOID OF VISION TEAM UP WITH ECCA VANDAL FOR ‘DECAY’

Sydney’s Yuma X - the musical project made up of vocalist Lucy Washington and producer Jake Smith - are swelling emotions with their glistening new single ‘We Could Be So Good’. A levitating, energetic pop song that once again redefines the duo’s capabilities as songwriters and producers, ‘We Could Be So Good’ is their most confident yet In what can only be described as a bittersweet moment, comes the news that after 5 years of collaboration, Yuma X is coming to an end. ‘We Could Be So Good’ will be Washington and Smith’s last release as a duo. Since their impressive arrival in 2015 with the haunting ‘Matchstick’, the pair have been carefully expanding their sound. Last year’s ‘Chasing Patterns’ was a bold, pulsating moment and it was furthered by the electronic experimentations of ‘What You Want’. In 2020, they had been even bolder though with the captivating single ‘Secret Lover’ upping the tempo, ushering us into the club and ‘We Could Be So Good’ extends on that. Over twinkling synths and heartbeat-raising percussion, Washington delivers an instantaneous chorus - one that circles your head long after the song has passed. ‘We Could Be So Good’ was born in a period of experimentation for the group as Smith explains. “We’d been trying out new sounds and seeing what works,” he says, continuing, “We’d definitely been moving towards a sound that’s more fun and dancefloor-centric.” The reason for this is a strive to create music that is tailor-made for an energetic live crowd. Accompanying today’s release is a nostalgia-steeped lyric video that follows the duo through their everyday adventures, documenting their creative processes and offering an insight into their personal lives outside of the band. For Lucy Washington, “WCBSG is a real feel good song, and the visuals in the music video capture that perfectly. I think this song is my favourite we’ve written and it feels like the perfect high note to end on. I’m so grateful for the last 5 years we’ve had and the music we’ve released and everyone who has supported us along the journey. I’m really proud of this one because it's something so positive and happy that came out of the hardest and strangest year. I hope it puts a smile on people’s faces and is the background song to many fun memories people make in the future.” Studio experimentation has resulted in new material that’s even more accessible while still retaining Yuma X’s individual, warm aesthetic. “It’s uncharted territory for us,” says Washington, explaining that it’s the first time they have played with traditional pop song structures. On top of that, Smith adds that it’s been important for them to “incorporate more live instruments.” The updated sound is just as dreamy as ever but the live instrumentation adds an earthiness to it that is sure to shimmer in the live arena. The new material has been inspired by the visceral songwriting of artists like Frank Ocean and Lana Del Rey while also soaking in the music being made on this side of the world. BENEE, Parcels and Mildlife are name-checked by the pair who have long been inspired by the musical community that surrounds them in Australia. Washington and Smith met at a New Year’s Eve party in 2009 and started releasing music as Yuma X in 2015. Since their debut EP Home Recordings, they have amassed over 6 million streams and become an exciting force within the indie-electronica space. In that time, they have also supported some of the most transcendent live acts on the planet including RUFUS Du Sol, ODESZA and Boo Seeka. They count triple j, FBi Radio, Pilerats, Radio Adelaide and Fashion Journal among their growing list of tastemaker fans. The rollout of their music over the past five years has been careful and considered as they took time to hone their songwriting. ‘We Could Be So Good’ proves that the wait has been worth it as they return with their final and most spellbinding release yet. Photo credit: Jess Brohier PRAISE FOR JUNE JONES “With Leafcutter she bends synth-pop convention in a fearlessly honest set that explores her experiences as a “deeply emotional” trans woman." - UNCUT "Unnerving and beautiful, it’s a strikingly rendered portrait of disaffection." - THE FADER "Fans of John Grant, Kate Bush and Björk will find a lot to love here — Leafcutter is by very definition art pop, but it never ventures out of the realm of accessibility." - Beat “Leafcutter is a reminder that there is strength in vulnerability and something truly powerful about a well-written song.” - STACK “June Jones' voice is one that envelops you and never lets you go. The emotion she lacquers every word with becomes your emotion; her world becomes your own.” - MTV A prolific artist and singular voice in the world of Australian music, June Jones releases her sophomore album Leafcutter today on Emotion Punk Records in collaboration with Remote Control Records. Despite this being Jones’ first self-produced record, Leafcutter feels in many ways like a logical sequel to her previous releases, which include two albums with Two Steps on the Water, the self-proclaimed “emotion punk” band she fronted from 2014 to 2018. Like her past albums, Leafcutter is a collection of songs exploring different aspects of her experience as “a deeply emotional trans woman, a lesbian with ADHD.” Her signature vocals – dynamic in their ability to move between syrupy cool and impassioned exclamation – are present as ever at the forefront of this record. To celebrate Leafcutter's release, Jones has announced album launches in Sydney & Castlemaine, plus an additional Melbourne show, on top of her two sold-out shows at Howler for the Brunswick Music Festival. Details below.   Lyrically, the songs have a confessional intimacy that Jones has become known for. On her latest single, 'Home', she uses the five senses to describe her relationship to her body, being loved, and learning to love herself. The verses are both poetic and analytic – “The sound of my voice in your ear / I wonder who it is you hear / And if you can discern the beating of my wings / The nutrients inside a tear” – culminating in a resplendent chorus in which she sings “But this is now / And this is home / And home is all I ever wanted” in a voice that is unmistakably hers.   Throughout 'Remember', the second track on the album, Jones uses her voice as an instrument, singing deep dyadic chords reminiscent of a Gregorian chant, panned between left and right ears. This millennium-old vocal style is counterbalanced with synths that reference both Madchester rave and hair metal, as well as viola, saxophone, intricate drum patterns, and a casually cool bass line. All these elements work together to create a sound that is at once familiar and unlike anything else that has come before. It is this atemporal collaging of old and new styles that defines Jones’s self-taught approach to production on Leafcutter. As a producer, Jones reminds us that everything new is a rearranging and reimagining of traditions.   “I made the whole album on a tiny refurbished Lenovo Thinkpad that I bought off a guy at a McDonalds. 18 months and over 1000 hours of work later, the album is finally finished. As someone diagnosed with ADHD as an adult, I have been almost entirely self-taught as a musician, whether it’s singing, writing songs, learning an instrument, or producing my own music, I just haven’t been able to sit still long enough to get through a lesson. But there have definitely been moments along the way where I have learned a lot from people, like sitting in the studio with Geoffrey O’Connor throughout the process of making Diana, or getting feedback on mixes from my dear friend and superproducer Geryon. Sometimes I wish I could approach learning in a more structured and systematic way, but I get overwhelmed by the infinite possibilities of music, so I’ve always felt more comfortable intuiting my way through things.”   Leafcutter manages to feel both intuitive and unpredictable in a way that calls to mind a classic Björk or Kate Bush album, finding a tentative home in the nebulous definition of art-pop. From above it is a pop record, but from within it resembles a labyrinth overflowing with intricate details that reveal themselves with each listen. Jones’s intuition informs both the album’s pop sensibility and experimentation. One thing that she delivers yet again is a record bursting with songs that get stuck in your head. Leafcutter, insectoid in name, is home to no shortage of earworms.   “One of my favourite albums of all time is Carly Rae Jepsen’s Emotion. For me, it’s a perfect pop album, with bangers from start to finish. In a funny way, I aspire to achieve that kind of consistency with every album I make. I feel like I am probably more prone to boredom than most, and it’s a state that I find almost painful. If there’s one thing I want to avoid as an artist, it’s being boring.” And boring this album is not. Every song feels like its own little world which Jones invites us into, where we are asked to sit and feel with her for a few minutes before moving next door to another one, with similarities and differences, made up of things both familiar and strange. On Leafcutter, Jones pulls off the unlikely feat of finding harmony in that which, according to our own intuitions, should be dissonant. In the second last line of the opening track, 'Jenny (Breathe)', she sings “There are as many worlds as minds here to perceive them”, and so too is the case with the quantum art pop of Leafcutter. Since 2017, Lanstan has cemented himself as one of the crucial voices in Australian hip hop, offering introspective songwriting from the perspective of a young man striving for success. Today he releases his sophomore EP Vision. STREAM EP - INTERNAL MEDIA USE ONLY | SMART URL | MEDIA ASSETS One of Lanstan’s main goals is to help elevate the hip-hop scene on the Northern beaches and connect with the youth. It’s a mission that was forged on his acclaimed releases ‘Dream State’ (produced by Kuren) and ‘Go To Sleep’ on his debut EP ‘Dreams’. As shown by his 2019 singles ‘Blueprint’ and ‘Trophy’, Lanstan wrote the songs on the new EP with the intention of being able to perform them with maximum energy. As Lanstan further explains, “Vision is me sharing my goals and ambitions as well as my fears and insecurities. It’s my most direct and vulnerable explanation of my Vision as an artist. I wanted every song to strike a different tone but all surround the same theme. It’s very important to me that by the end of the project, you know me better as an artist. Whether I’m singing, rapping or shouting, there’s something for every fan of hip-hop music on there.” The Vision EP was crafted in collaboration with Max Muller (Muller Made), Tom Garnett, Joseph Colmenero, Ollie Roland, Steven Petridis (Espa) and recording engineer Daniel Natoli. “This EP has been a long time in the making and has been some of the best times of my life (even with the pandemic situation). With the help of an amazing team around me I have smashed some of my biggest goals in music and continued in an upward trajectory. Reuniting with Miles for this project was a very special moment too. Although we have been making music together non-stop for years, we have been focussing on releasing our solo music and backlogging our content together. A lot of our followers have been begging us to drop some music together and I’m honoured that we got to do that on my project. I made sure to spare absolutely no expense on this project and spent months fixing up tiny details in the mixes as well as meticulously planning the tone I wanted to strike for the project. This EP is very special to me and I hope it will find a place in the history of Australian hip-hop music.” Lanstan ‘Trophy’ carefully builds momentum, with its nuanced hip hop production supported by a delicate flute and lilting guitars." NME Australia “Though each of his tracks differ in their vibe, the undeniable raw talent, power, and rapid-fire lyricism that Lanstan possesses is on full display at every turn.” Tone Deaf "Vision comes straight from the heart and it shows Lanstan is a pure talent when it comes to creating music that will hang around for a long time." Peter Noble OAM, Bluesfest Festival Director and Chairman of the Bluesfest Group of Companies announced this morning: “The NSW Government has indicated that, if the current COVID-19 situation continues in NSW, Bluesfest would be permitted to proceed, following our comprehensive COVID-19 safety plan. This is a great day, not only for Bluesfest, but also for the Australian Live Music Industry and our unrelenting efforts to get back to presenting Live Music Safely. Whilst our capacity, stages and campgrounds will be approximately 50% of the numbers we have had in the past, it is great to know there is a future for our industry, and that we have been given the opportunity to present Bluesfest 2021 at a level not seen at festivals in Australia since the summer of 2019/20. We were heartbroken after last year’s cancellation three weeks out from the festival, due to NSW government orders. However, our resolve to present our beloved, multi award-winning festival resulted in our commencing work with Riskworks to create a COVID-19 Safety Plan in May of 2020. We first lodged it with government in August and have continued to refine the plan since that time. We have worked closely with NSW Health in developing the plan and are extremely thankful for their ongoing advice. Certainly, the NSW Events Task Force and the offices of Stuart Ayres, Minister for Tourism and Major Events NSW; John Barilaro, the Deputy Premier NSW; Ben Franklin, NSW Parliamentary Secretary for the Arts; the office of Don Harwin, NSW Minister for the Arts and Paul Fletcher, Federal Minister for the Arts are to be commended for working closely with us on a weekly basis to achieve this milestone result for the music loving people of Australia,” said Bluesfest Festival Director Peter Noble. Bluesfest is a five-time winner of Best Major Event at the NSW Tourism Awards, and a member of the NSW Tourism Hall of Fame, as well as being nominated nine times as Best International Music Festival in the Pollstar Awards which take place in Los Angeles, including their 30th Anniversary edition 2019. “We have an All-Aussie lineup playing at Easter at our purpose-built event site, The Byron Events Farm (formerly Tyagarah Tea Tree Farm) in Byron Shire, 15 minutes’ drive north from Byron Bay. Bluesfest is headlined by an amazing lineup of talent, including Jimmy Barnes, Tash Sultana, Ocean Alley, Ziggy Alberts, The Teskey Brothers, John Butler, Xavier Rudd, The Cat Empire, Kasey Chambers, The Waifs, The Church, John Williamson, Ian Moss, Kev Carmody, Vika & Linda, Chain, Backsliders, Melbourne Ska Orchestra, Blue King Brown, Kate Miller-Heidke, Dami Im, Weddings Parties Anything, Russell Morris, Briggs, Jon Stevens and many, many more.  At the moment we are 80% sold out and our Friday, Saturday and Sunday days are expected to sell out” Noble said. “We will be inspecting the 150-page COVID-19 Safety Plan in depth and will make a further announcement on how Bluesfest will be presented in a safe manner next week. What we can say is that the plan is created in a way where we can adapt to the requirements of the NSW Health Department should there be a need to create higher levels of safety for the public on site, and, of course, we are also hopeful, that conditions will be further relaxed should there be no further community transmissions. The good news is you won’t need to wear a mask currently whilst attending. We are looking forward to seeing your smiling faces as you experience the best in Australian music at an outdoor fully seated event. There are so many people to thank who took part in working with us in getting to this point. The artists and their agents and managers, the media for their ongoing support, our suppliers and of course the Bluesfest Team who never wavered, well … only sometimes, in their conviction to produce Bluesfest at Easter (April 1-5) this year. But number one is, our gratitude to the music fans, who purchased the tickets from the moment we went on sale and who will join us in making history as major live music events return in Australia.” Let’s bring back the music ! The art of performance photography in collaboration with one of Australia’s leading performance photographers Jeff Busby. By exploring highlights from the rich photographic holdings of Arts Centre Melbourne’s Australian Performing Arts Collection, together with some favourites from his own archive, Busby gives us insight into both the art of photography and the world of the performing arts. “I thought an important factor in this project was how we were able to cross through time and find a commonality in what these images are trying to tell us,” said Jeff Busby. “One of the most fascinating aspects was looking at the Australian Performing Arts Collection and the historic sweep of their work and being shown how performance photography has followed the progression of the performing arts in Australia.” Framing the Stage was developed during Victoria’s second-wave lockdown in 2020 and opened up a dialogue between Busby and the Assistant Curator for the Australian Performing Arts Collection Ian Jackson. Exploring the archive together, they uncovered a number of special moments from Australia’s performing arts history.   “At a time when live performance has been limited, we wanted to remind people of what is so exciting and compelling about the performing arts. Performance photography is like capturing lightning in a bottle, the photographer needs to capture a performer, their role, and the feel of the production, all within a single image,” said Jackson.   “The Australian Performing Arts Collection has a wealth of amazing photographs, covering more than a hundred years of ballet, circus, dance, theatre and opera. We knew that a practising performance photographer like Jeff would bring new insights to them, based on his many years of experience.” “We wanted to take our audiences backstage and behind the camera to see his work - and the photographs in the collection - through his eyes.” The project has resulted in a robustly curated exploration of photographic images, styles and history, combined with unique insights from Busby.    “I found it an extremely rewarding process and allowed me to reflect in a way I perhaps hadn’t been able to until recently. In particular delving into the collection and opening up a whole gamut of thoughts and how the photos over time have fit into the bigger picture,” said Busby. “These moments only happened once, and through these moments, with layering and attention you are able to capture a moment in time which reflects a complex matrix of performance. We’ve managed to uncover and present photos that entice, entertain and have a timeless quality to them.” Online exhibitions have been an incredibly successful initiative for the Australian Performing Arts Collection, allowing audiences all over the world unprecedented access to this rare trove of objects. Framing the Stage adds to the developing wealth of knowledge available through their online portal. You can access Framing the Stage and other exhibitions here. We’re excited to be welcoming visitors back to our venues in line with the most recent Victorian Government guidelines on COVID-19. However, following the Victorian Government’s announcement that the state is returning to Stage 4 lockdowns from 11:59pm Friday 12 February, events scheduled between Saturday 13 and Wednesday 17 February will not proceed as planned. Ticketholders will be contacted directly with more information. This also means we have temporarily closed our Sunday Markets and Australian Music Vault, but our outdoor café Protagonist is still offering take away coffee and food should you be passing through. While the ghost lights will stay on a little longer inside our venues, we will continue to offer audiences the chance to experience the wonder of the performing arts via our digital hub – Together With You. Berlin Based Band GHEIST Present Their ‘acoustic – unusual’ EP; A Collection Of Acoustic Versions | Stream Now

Where are you currently based? On Gadigal land of the Eora nation aka Sydney. How did you first start playing music? When I was little I copied everything my older sister Jeanie did. She brought a guitar home one day when I was 10 and I adopted it.  I was painfully shy back then so I started writing songs as a way to communicate. What's been happening recently and how has your Covid experience been so far? As weird and depressing as a lot of things have been politically/globally/culturally during this pandemic, the whole experience has been a wake up call for me. Waking up to what’s important in life and what’s not. Waking up to the future we face as a species and the environmental crisis in our hands. Waking up to contributing my skills to make change. I was unemployed most of last year until I got a job with an environmental NGO run by a small group of incredible women. It’s the first time in a long time I’ve felt like I’m working towards something important. It’s made me feel a lot of hope for the future but also know how urgently things need to change. In terms of music though, I have missed playing shows and watching live music a lot. Having an imposed break has made me really appreciate it. Now when I go see live music you can hear a pin drop because everyone is so focused on the music. The audience is soaking up every note. I haven’t played a live show since I left Australia in September 2019 which is weird after playing every week or so for years. Can’t wait to get back on stage. You were overseas in 2019 and then came back to Australia due to Covid, please tell us about what you got up to: I had wanted to live in Europe forever and got a three year working visa for the UK in 2019. So I released my second album Hysteria! in September 2019 and a week or so later I left. I spent three months in London, three months in Paris and three months in Athens walking 20 kilometres a day exploring the streets, parks, music, galleries. I taught myself a music recording program called Logic and wrote songs every day and demoed them in Logic. I was basically by myself working on my craft with jobs on the side to fund adventures.  Then in Athens, I was working for an NGO supporting LGBTIQ refugees and the situation politically got pretty scary - there were anti-refugee riots and people started burning refugee camps in Lesvos. They had to shut the shelter I worked at due to threats so I lost my job. The next day I got an emergency text from the Greek government saying a lockdown was going to happen because of COVID and no-one could leave their house without a permit. Trump announced he was closing the US borders. My family called and said Morrison was about to do the same. I had to make a very quick decision. I didn’t even have time to tell my landlord I had to leave and threw all my shit in a bag, went to the airport and got the first plane back to Sydney I could. It was the right decision - it would have been hard to stay living alone in the current climate. And now seeing all these stranded Australians still trying to get home 14 months later.  Your new single 'Waiting For Time' will be out on Feb 16, what influenced the sound and songwriting? I wrote this song walking around London with a heart that fell full and empty at the same time. When I left Australia I had just fallen in a terribly  timed romance. I decided to leave anyway with the hope and a promise they would join me eventually. This song is about feeling in limbo, wondering when and if I’d see them again. Talking to them on the other side of the planet at odd times of day and night due to the time difference. In terms of the sound, I penned the term Stargaze for this new collection of songs I’m releasing this year. Think shoegaze but instead of looking down you look up at the stars, trying to absorb and reflect the sound of their beauty, darkness, silent noise, infinite space, twinkling hope in the distance. I'm always using the stars for inspiration. How did you go about writing Waiting For Time? I wrote it in winter in London when I was feeling pretty lonely but also experiencing a weird long-distance love bubble. I didn’t have a guitar at the time so I wrote it on bass with lyrics and melody and stitched the rest together in a kind of patchwork from random recording sessions in Paris, Athens and Sydney. Where and when did you record/produce/master and who did you work with? When I got back to Australia during the first wave of COVID, I did a (socially distanced) session at Harvest Recordings in Marrickville to get the bones of the song down. Kat Ayala laid down some beautiful lush guitars for it. And Sarah Fenn-Lavington smashed out drums. I co-produced the song with Ben Moore (Harvest Recordings), who also added his guitars and synths. We kept layering things on, rearranging, adding things and taking them away. It was the first time I'd worked on a song in this way and the first time I'd worked closely with a producer. It felt so good to collaborate creatively like this in a safe place - my living room mainly. We did vocals in my bathroom and Ben mixed it too. I got Casey Rice in Melbourne to master. I'm really proud of where it ended up sonically.  Who are you listening to at the moment? RVG, Vagabon, Arlo Parks, Spiritualized, Sol Seppy, Brian Eno, Grouper.  What do you like to do away from music? Spending time in nature mainly. Solo swims at the beach, exploring rock pools, I love going on ferry rides in Sydney and taking my dog for walks near water. Also I love my friends and laughing as much as possible with them.  What's planned for the remainder of 2020 going into 2021? I'm working on and releasing a bunch of new songs this year and going to work with a director for a special music video or two. Mostly I'm excited about rehearsing a new set with a new band and getting back on stage on on tour as soon as possible/    Favourite food  Cheese Favourite place to hangout? Where are you currently based? All four of us are based right here on the Gold Coast within about 20 minutes of each other.  How did Chutney form? Chutney formed in late 2019! We all had our own separate musical projects that we had been part of. I (Matt) wanted to try a different sort of genre from what I had been focusing on at the time and wrote a few indie-rock numbers. I had brought these songs to Cal (Guitar) and Pat (Bass) and we decided to form this little project. Andy (Drums) came on board after a few of the first songs were written out and the rest is history. What's been happening recently and how has your Covid experience been? We were only really just starting out as a band when COVID first bared its teeth so our mentality was to use that time to get all the structures in place for a successful post-COVID world. We tried to work on refining our sound, building a brand and creating an image… as well as write lots and lots. As things opened back up we snatched up any and every gig and it's honestly worked quite well. Our focus recently has been writing the years worth of music out and getting ready for our Invisible tour.  Your new single Invisible is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting? I wrote the basic chord structure and lyrics after watching Elton John’s Biopic “Rocketman.” I was particularly taken aback by one quote - “Real love is hard to come by. So you find a way to cope without it.” I thought it was kinda sad that there are those who feel they aren't worthy enough to be loved. I thought it was a pretty heavy notion, however its those sorts of ídeas/moments that I love writing about.  How did you go about writing Invisible? My little moment of inspiration came halfway through the movie so I made a little voice memo and got to it later. I had some pretty chords I was playing with so I wrote the whole song that afternoon. That same week we came together and played it as a band and pretty much had it 95% complete, it was one of those ones that just falls into place I suppose.  Where and when did you record/produce/master and who with? We recorded with our long time collaborators Scotty French from Love St Studios and Paul Blakey for Mastering. We’re always happy with the sound we achieve with these two and honestly recording with Scotty is such a good experience.  You have a tour coming up this February, where are you headed? The tour is just a small one to showcase our single so we are doing 2 shows in Brisbane and 2 shows in our hometown. You can find us at Black Bear Lodge (18th), Elsewhere (19th), Vinnies Dive Bar (27th) & Greaser Bar (5th).  How do you prepare for live shows and what can we expect? It’s pretty much just about getting into a rehearsal space a few times before a gig and making some noise. We have an array of music, from faster numbers to ballads, but I think for the tour we are gonna keep it as energetic as possible. We also have a bunch of new music to test out which is exciting. Any new music on the way? Yes yes! We have around 10 tracks done; it's just about choosing the right ones at this point if you know what I mean. There's about 3 of them that are worthy of being the next single… time will tell which one we pick.  Who are you listening to at the moment? I’ve been getting around the local scene ALOT recently. Beddy Rays, Sycco, Girl and Girl and Local Safari come to mind. I’ve also been absolutely smashing Fontaines DC recently. Absolutely love their sound.  What do you like to do away from music? We are all quite a close group of friends; so just hanging out on weekends and playing any sport we possibly can or having a bit of a drink. We also love checking out any of the local artists that we can. There's so much good music coming out of the Gold Coast, you don't need to leave the city to enjoy an amazing show.  What's planned for 2021? The next thing will be our follow-up to Invisible and the tour. We want to get out to a couple of the major capitals of Australia (COVID pending) but really we just love playing shows and writing music - so we will continue to do that.  Favourite food and place to hangout? Definitely our local pub the Lonestar Tavern in Mermaid - or perhaps Options for Andy ;) We may spend a bit too much time there.  Instagram Facebook Youtube Spotify

Chutney

Where are you currently based? Geographically, in Melbourne, emotionally, somewhere on  another planet. What's been happening recently and how has your Covid experience been so far? We’ve just come back from seeing our beautiful friends & family in Perth which was such a huge opposite to what our COVID experience was. No friends to so many friends, feeling depressed to crying with laughter. The only constant has been we drank and ate way too much. Your new EP 'Starters & Appetizers will be out Feb 19 2021, what influenced the sound and songwriting? We wanted a bright, 80s pop sound that sparkled with a little mystery & weirdness. We wrote all the songs during lockdown so a lot of those feels are incorporated into a few melodic moments and definitely through the lyrics. When you’re stuck at home by yourself, you start reflecting on things a little too much, and so a lot of the lyrics are reflections on past experiences and feelings. Where and when did you record/produce/master and who with? We recorded & produced everything in house, and by that we literally mean in the house. Noni recorded vocals in a wardrobe padded with yoga mats. One of our super talented friends Joel Dowling mixed all the tracks for us - all of his stuff is bloody incredible and has worked with so many cool artists like Matt Corby & Samsaruh.  The EP covers various topics of depression, anxiety / social anxiety, heartbreak and finding out who you are, how did you approach the writing process? It was different with each song… For Jules, he would be up late with a bottle of wine and a MIDI keyboard - definitely how all the melancholic magic happens. For me, I would often lock myself in a room and listen to the Jules’s track over and over again until something stuck. One of the songs took 10 minutes to write, the other took 5 weeks. I think that time alone & apart from each other allowed for an introspective & emotional canvas. Please describe a bit about the background of each track: Track 1: Butterflies & SSRIs This is an instrumental track that we hope paints a melodic journey about addressing depression & anxiety through therapy and medication (SSRIs) and finally being able to function and see the world in colour for the first time. For Jules, this has been a super long journey and so we felt it would be perfect to open the EP with an instrumental that would frame the topics of each track after - there are a bunch of different elements that you’ll hear repeated in other tracks to draw the whole thing together. Track 2: Ultra Passion We originally released this Nov 1st last year. Ultra Passion is about foolishly jumping into a bad relationship with your heart on your sleeve and having it break your heart. For me, this recounts a particularly heartbreaking time in my life. The first line sums up the song: “21 and a fool, we didn’t know what we were doing.” Track 3: Sober Spaceman Another re-release from last December. This one is about being held back from making decisions in life for fear of disappointment and living life passively on ‘autopilot’ because of crippling anxiety. Almost like you’re floating through space, unable to redirect where you’re going in life and finally sobering up to the reality of the situation. Track 4: Sad Champagne Is about trying not to jump into a relationship after heartbreak - not wanting to be alone, but knowing that you need to be alone to heal, and reflecting on the brokenness of past relationships.  Track 5: Private Wine Story through an introvert’s eyes at a party and struggling to ‘be normal’ and fit, because of social anxiety. I wrote the lyrics to this one with Jules in mind. It’s about finally finding your rhythm and ‘dance’ in life, something we both found in 2020. What did you find most challenging and rewarding through out the creation of the EP? I think its always tricky working with your romantic partner, and we both have very different working styles and processes. But the reward was the fact that we produced this together and got through it on the other side and we still like working together.  Who are you listening to at the moment? I’m listen to RAYE (@raye), LEON (@Leon), & SayGrace (@callmesaygrace). All powerhouse female artists. What do you like to do away from music? Personally I like to binge watch TV shows on Netflix, nap, eat and clean - I guess classic traits you’d find in most Racoons. For us, a perfect day is a drive down to Mornington listening to music and then grabbing a gin & tonic. What's planned for 2021? Fingers crossed our first show! We’ve got a bunch of new singles lined up after the EP (some cool collabs in the mix). Also a sneaky music video or two. Favourite food and place to hangout? Definitely Japanese - we are huge suckers for ramen, particularly Shujinko in the city, hands down best ramen in Melbourne. I love a trip to the National Gallery of Victoria - it’s super igniting on a creative level, plus I love to make memes out of the Renaissance paintings.

FancyNormal

Where are you currently based? Montreal, Canada How did you first start playing music? Picked up a bass at age 16 after listening to (and being blown away) by Steve Harris, the bass player for Iron Maiden. Haven't been into metal for a while, but that's how it all started.  How has your approach t0 creating music changed over the years? I've been in an indie rock band for many years, and for most of that time, our approach to music involved jamming out complete songs. Lately, we've been more into splicing parts together on a DAW. And for my solo work, I write beats, jam out a live bassline over them, and add on keyboard parts on that. What's been happening recently and how has your Covid experience been so far? I've been lucky: COVID hasn't impacted me that much. Musically and otherwise, things have been relatively normal. Your new single 'Teacups' is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting? The feel and mood of the song was inspired by Yves Tumour's album Serpent Music. Amazing album, by the way. I love the field recordings in the album and just the feeling of mystery. How did you go about writing Teacups? Teacups started with a beat I tapped out on my knuckles, and then recorded. I then added a reverb effect and some drums, and the bassline. I put a melody over it all using a keyboard patch. Lastly, I put some field recordings of my daughter playing with a small porcelain tea set and talking, and saturated with reverb. Where and when did you record/produce/master and who did you work with? My first LP - called The Gamins - was recorded at my home studio. I did the mixing myself, and mastered it online. In my band we've used other people to mix our stuff quite a bit - but for Nimrawd I felt it made more sense for me to do it myself. My music is very lo-fi and intense - so the album was forgiving of my possibly inexperienced mixing technique. How did you approach the recording process? I start by tapping out a drum line on my iPhone, more often than not. Next, I put a live bassline down. I feel that live bass is key to my music. There's something about the analog nature of it that really just lets the rhythm breathe and open up. I then add other instrumentation on top. The actual "recording" process will typically happen over sessions that last a few hours. Then the arranging and tinkering happens. I'll do that over a period of months, in short bursts - sometimes of just a few minutes.  What programs/instruments/equipment did you use? iPhone for beats. Sometimes an iPad, sometimes a drum pad. I used a Warwick fretless 4-string bass for all the basslines. Everything was recorded on Logic Pro and using MIDI patches. How did the concept for the Teacups video come about? I felt the song had a movement to it, and one day the idea of doing a ballet-type of video came into my head. It just felt right. Where and when did you film/produce and who did you work with? I hired a dancer on Fiverr to do it. It's crazy what you can do online these days. I sent her the song, the words my daughter says in the music, and she took it from there. I gave her full artistic freedom to do what she felt was right, and I think she did a great job. You have an LP to be released later in 2021, how has the progress been so far? The progress has been great. In fact the album is mostly done - but with a big asterisk. I have a series of songs, but I need to make sure they work as a whole. I also need to see if I need to add a new song to make sure I'm covering all the styles I'd like to have on the LP. And, of course, there might be some situations where I have to cut a song I like because it doesn't fit with the others.  How are you approaching the creation of the LP? I would say the songs on this new LP are a bit more electronic foused, and less "beat tape" focused. I'm also experimenting with shorter "ditties" which push the music a bit more in terms of experimentality. Who are you listening to at the moment? Ras G, Madlib, Mike Ladd, Actress, Brian Eno, Dakim, Inga Copeland, The Beach Boys. What do you like to do away from music? Skip this question What's planned for the remainder of 2021? Complete the album, and start the next one. I'm in a bit of a netherzone right now. Once I'm nearly done with an album I find it hard to really get into new songs. I've started experimenting with some texture ideas, but the next step is really to release my second LP. Favourite food and place to hangout? Skip this question

DADA LIFE PARTNER WITH REVEALED RECORDINGS TO LAUNCH NEW LABEL ‘CRASH & SMILE’ AND DROP FIRST SINGLE ‘RUMBLE SLOW’! Launch date: Out now! Stream here: revr.ec/RUMBLE-SLOW   Swedish duo Dada Life are renowned for their fun sensibility and broad view of nonsense and surrealism. So, fans of their sound and ethos will be excited by the news that the Dada revolution continues to gather pace with the arrival of their own recording label – Crash & Smile - and a new single with ‘Rumble Slow’.   Undoubtedly moulded in a laboratory of madness, Dada Life has spawned Crash & Smile to be a buoyant, grin inducing imprint that will not only serve the full on, big room anthems that fans have come to expect! But it's also going to be an environment for building and support a new generation of artists that share Dada Life’s focus for top notch productions and big bass lines.   When pinned down to reveal why Crash & Smile came to be, Dada Life responded: "We're super excited to start a new chapter in Dada Land with the Crash & Smile label. It's a natural step since we've felt something is missing in the music space. We felt there must be more people than just us that want to crash with a smile on their face! Big melodies and high energy are the essence of what makes us feel happy! We've been working a lot with Hardwell and Revealed, so to be able to do this label with them feels amazing! We can focus on finding great music, like our new release ‘Rumble Slow’, and being creative!"   In partnership with Revealed Recordings, Dada Life and their newly formed Crash & Smile have international reaching aims for the label. Utilising the esteemed Dutch powerhouse's long experience and in-house personnel, Crash & Smile seeks to climb musical mountains with its output. From being the source for all things Dada Life, the record label shall also be a springboard for other artists and music releases.   Dada Life’s manager Toby Benson added: “I’ve had the pleasure of working with the Revealed team for many years across a number of projects, so it was an obvious next step to partner on launching Dada Life’s new label ‘Crash & Smile’ together. This deal gives Dada Life the creative freedom to release their unique style of music and also a platform for them to sign and develop talent under their own imprint.”   Olle Cornéer and Stefan Engblom are the Stockholm duo that embodies Dada Life in the physical form. Every piece of sound, sweat and swirling idea comes from them. They are known for their anthemic hits such as 'Kick Out The Epic Motherf**ker’, 'One Last Night On Earth', 'Happy Violence', ‘Born To Rage’, and 'Feed The Dada'. The Dada Life boys has also been a prominent feature at large scale events over the years showcasing their crazy antics, including declaring their own nation, at mainstages everywhere from Electric Daisy Carnival, Ultra Music Festival, Creamfields and Tomorrowland.   Commenting on the partnership Revealed’s Managing Director Massimo Baudo said: "We have all heard Dada Life’s iconic songs played in clubs and festivals, on the radio and tv all around the world. These guys have always been pioneers and their music will continue inspiring fans in the future. Everybody within the team is thrilled to be working with Dada Life and be part of this new adventure, so we couldn’t be happier they have chosen Revealed as the home for their new Crash & Smile label.”   Revealed Recordings have been on the frontier of music experience since its launch in 2010—a hotbed for artists such as Maddix, KAAZE, Dr Phunk, and Sick Individuals. Revealed has also welcomed into its family established names that include Steve Aoki, Tiësto, Jason Derulo, Craig David, Austin Mahone, Afrojack, Quintino, KSHMR, Timmy Trumpet and Snoop Dogg.                                                                                                                      The first release on Dada Life’s new Crash & Smile label is ‘Rumble Slow’ out now!   For information check:   Crash & Smile Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/CrashAndSmile Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/CrashAndSmile/ YouTube – https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC0pZ3b9GJGez7u6x3TTHDkQ Soundcloud – https://soundcloud.com/CrashAndSmile/ Spotify - https://open.spotify.com/user/clec4fffxcofpi5kjwgwas01n?si=5dw3v_gZSCOzvhaaNMaRUQ   Dada Life Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/dadalife/ Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/dadalife/ Twitter - https://twitter.com/dadalife/ YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/dadalife Soundcloud - https://soundcloud.com/dada-life Spotify - https://open.spotify.com/artist/00sAT5YX8W3xNd1EuqyHw9?si=n2MbiPd0Rr6aBJCyARL8tQ   Revealed Recordings Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/revealedrecordings Instagram – https://www.instagram.com/revealedrec Twitter – https://twitter.com/revealedrec YouTube – https://www.youtube.com/user/Revealedrec Soundcloud – https://soundcloud.com/revealed-recordings Spotify – https://open.spotify.com/user/revealedrec

“Produced by Julien Lopes (aka Ramzoid), and written by Haddad - “On The Low” is her introduction to the music world.  “I wanted to explore my words, feelings and musicality through the creation of a song that fused my love for R&B and Pop,” says Haddad. The new single is a testament to her burgeoning musical flair, one that is modern, progressive and distinctly her. A resident of PEI, Haddad has been involved with a myriad of community arts projects ranging from starring in the Charlottetown production of “Stan Rogers: A Matter of Heart” to lending her talents to good causes such as the “Beacon of Light” candlelight vigil commemorating the victims of the 2020 Beirut explosion. With a future that is full of unlimited potential, Nadia Haddad is an artist to keep an eye on. Known for his worldly folk sound, BOCEPHUS KING (James Perry), has played music for crowds around the globe as well as collaborated with master musicians from all over the world, and quite fittingly. Bocephus King carries a sound from places near and far, familiar and foreign, rooted in folk tradition and infused with his contemporary, unique approach. He is a troubadour through and through and his ability to connect with his listeners transcends cultures. "I wrote this song wanting to start with a first-hand account of the modern version of this gypsy-style life and to finish with a reminder of the very message the original Troubadours tried to hide from the dreaded, soulless inquisition. That is this: enlightenment is a choice, everything you need dwells in you. You are the universe trying to understand itself. You don’t need a middleman to reach spirituality." - Bocephus King LISTEN: https://open.spotify.com/album/6jyWd4uuidUV9oZl5u7sek?highlight=spotify:track:4HxrORO6Gjl9Jb82MPWIgP SOCIALS http://www.tonicrecords.com/artist/bocephus-king/ https://twitter.com/bocephusking?lang=en https://www.facebook.com/BocephusKing/ https://www.instagram.com/bocephusk/?hl=en

Sam Blacky Releases Debut Single “Too Late” and Launches Her Stabby Records Imprint

Where are you from and where are you currently based? Born and raised Australian, from Western Sydney. Sacrificed the sun and moved to East London, 8 years ago! How did you first start playing music? From a young age I was given a “thing” by my parents, something to keep me preoccupied and out of trouble. Some get sports, others dancing, it was singing for me.  What's been happening recently for you and how has your Covid experience been so far? I  managed to put out a record through the pandemic, so most of 2020 was based around that. Kinda think it was a good thing, kept me busy in what was a really difficult year. Always trying to see the silver lining, I learnt a lot last year and was forced to think outside the box creatively.  Your new single 'Revolution' is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting? Revolution was written in 2019 about the person who brings out the best in you, encourages a change within. I love the Woodstock era, empowered female singer-songwriters like Joni Mitchell and Janis Joplin. I suppose they inspired the sound in many ways. Some songs go on to have more depth as they exist in the world, the more I lived with Revolution the more meaning it had. In light of 2020 and the shift in global conversation about equality across race, gender, environmental justice - Revolution was that song I put out to help face the days with.  How did you go about writing Revolution? I took in the concept, I’d seen a street sign in capitals saying “Revolution” on the way to write. Small things sometimes funnily inspire songs. I wrote it with Paro Westerlund and Professor P in Sweden. Professor P specialises in lyrics predominantly, I was working on my storytelling at the time and it really helped to have those two to bounce ideas off. To take such a grand concept and make it into something relatable and close to home - that was tough. So happy with how we managed to make it work though!  Where and when did you record/produce/master and who with? Revolution was written in Sweden, but produced over in LA. I’ve always been really lucky to have people believe in my songs and get on board because they’re excited by it and wanna see me win. Onree Gill produced the track and got the gospel choir Ella + Q to record over it. Onree’s worked with Alicia Keys, John Mayer, Gwen Stefani and Ella + Q with Prince and Whitney. I mean, I’m just a small town girl from Western Sydney so pretty mind blowing! We then had additional production done by a Maestro The Baker, a Grammy award winning producer here in the UK. How did you approach the recording process and what did you find most challenging and rewarding? I executive produced my album “Hunger” alongside Joe Garrett and my managers, I think getting 12 songs and bringing them into the same sonic world proved to be our biggest challenge. Even now there are a few different sounds across the album, but we managed to get them all sounding like they lived in the same world. No one ever prepared me for listening to 7+ mixes per song, but it was so important for me to be a part of that process.  Who are you listening to at the moment? I’ve started to rehash some 2000’s power pop women Robyn, Gossip, Florence. Also I’m always listening to Bon Iver, James Blake, Ólafur Arnalds.  What do you like to do away from music? I spend a lot of time away from music walking in nature, which helps me to clear my mind.  What's planned for 2021, what other projects / releases do you currently have in the pipeline? I’m taking this new found down time to focus on writing songs for other artists, I have a few features I’m excited about coming up! I’m also working on a side project in the dance world which is nothing like anyone’s heard from me before called AR/CO, so watch this space.

Photo Credit: Kovi Konowiecki PRAISE FOR HAND HABITS "placeholder is an impressive piece of craftsmanship, not only in its lyrics but in its sparkling production and masterly sense of melody-for such wistful songs, they have an uncanny ability to get stuck in your head." - New Yorker "An album full of songs that showcase Duffy's gifts front and center... Peaceful, calming, with a hint of something else underneath the surface." - Rolling Stone "Meg Duffy is your favorite indie rocker's favorite guitarist... Duffy plumbs new depths of intimacy when it comes to the topics of anxiety, loss, and forgiveness." - Pitchfork "Duffy pays scrupulous attention to detail in songs that function like intricate dioramas... On placeholder, the singer contemplates the fragility of human relationships and the hard-to-stomach reality that many of the people, experiences and places we've loved are only stepping stones on a journey of self-discovery." - NPR "Remarkable and inquisitive...recalls the piercing lucidity of Angel Olsen, the confidence of Sharon Van Etten." -Stereogum "Lulling, frank revelations on the complexities of desire." - The FADER "placeholder is more atmospheric than show-offy, in which Duffy's tasteful, restrained playing supports the delicate melodies and reflective lyrics. " - UPROXX "A vessel of complex, ever-evolving emotion, warm vocals and dexterous guitar shrieks." - Paste "Achingly beautiful and poignant... profoundly articulated and relatable." - Gorilla vs Bear Hand Habits, the project of Meg Duffy (they/them), has shared a cover of Neil Young's 'i believe in you,' the latest from their upcoming dirt EP. dirt finds the songwriter exploring themes of growth and finding ways to let go of the parts of their past that no longer serve them. It illuminates Duffy's attempts to evolve beyond the confines of their past. Last month Hand Habits shared a video for the EP's A-Side, '4th of july,' which NPR's Bob Boilen called "their best song ever," and Stereogum named the best song of the week upon its release saying "Meg Duffy has leveled up with every Hand Habits album and it looks as though they're about to do it again." The EP, which was co-produced by Duffy and Sasami Ashworth and Kyle Thomas (King Tuff), is available for pre-order now and due February 19th via Milk! Records / Remote Control. While their most recent album placeholder saw them working with producer Brad Cook at Justin Vernon's April Base Studios and garnering praise from such outlets as NPR which called the work "their most fully realized statement" and the Los Angeles Times which praised the work as a "virtually seamless country rock album, with verses moving fluidly into choruses that travel unimpeded across sparkling, architecturally sophisticated bridges." dirt showcases an artist returning to the fertile creative ground of their home.   However, this time around home-recording didn't necessarily mean working in isolation. Duffy had relocated to a shared living situation in Los Angeles with musicians Sasami Ashworth and Kyle Thomas (King Tuff), which also housed Thomas' studio. The resulting songs showcase this creatively collaborative environment, with Ashworth co-producing the lead single and Thomas co-producing 'i believe in you'. Such is the strength of this relationship, in fact, that this new single just may serve as a bridge toward a greater body of work the three will ultimately create together. The sonic texture of '4th of july' complements its lyrical journey, with a simple and sparse introduction marked by a slow burn crescendo hinting at the rupture to come, followed by an ecstatic wail of transcendent emotion. Fittingly, it concludes with a reprise of the beginning but this time altered by new sounds, suggesting a new perspective. Similarly, Duffy breathes new life into the Young staple, 'i believe in you,' adding a foreboding weight and impact to the long-familiar words. For Duffy, the process of recording and the song's themes of growth through trust dovetailed perfectly. As they note, "There's a foundation, and when there's a foundation there's opportunity to reimagine structures; physical and otherwise." The sell-out success, Synthony, returns to Brisbane for a ‘One Night Only’ epic outdoor show at Riverstage on Saturday 29th May! The ultimate celebration of the last 30 years of dance music, Synthony is a unique collaboration between Orchestra, DJs, live vocalists and feature musicians.   After a hugely success 2019 show at Brisbane City Hall, the super-charged and energetic Synthony will return to showcase a brand-new set list featuring the biggest dance anthems from icons such as: Avicii, Eric Prydz, Fatboy Slim and Basement Jaxx to name just a few, backed with the full might of a 60+ piece Brisbane Philharmonic Orchestra.  The show is stacked with iconic stars from across the Australian music spectrum playing their global hits including: Miss Connie (Sneaky Sound System), Ilan Kidron (The Potbelleez), Mobin Master, Greg Gould, Ella Monnery, Andy Van (Madison Avenue / Vicious Records) and Mark Dynamix. With an epic backdrop of visuals, lasers and a state-of-the-art sound system, it’s a magical, uplifting, hands-in-the-air dance party like no other.  An energetic show from the outset, this is not an orchestra as you know it.  This celebration of dance music is more than just a show, it takes the audience on a nostalgic journey back through their most memorable dance music experiences.  Track after track, fans are taken down memory lane and celebrate dance music that is embedded into their subconscious.   Synthony's New Zealand shows (since 2017) have been attended by ‘Sold Out’ audiences (as well as its Brisbane debut in 2019).  After successful shows across New Zealand over the last few months, including a sold-out show at Spark Arena, (Auckland) and the orchestral extravaganza’s first outdoor show at the magical natural Amphitheatre of the ‘Bowl of Brooklands’ (New Plymouth), the tour hits the soon to be sold out Melbourne show at the famous Sidney Myer Music Bowl. Synthony Australia will include some of Australia’s dance music’s favourite artists, who are also behind some massive hits, such as: Miss Connie (Sneaky Sound System) – ‘Pictures,’ ‘I Love It,’ ‘UFO,’ ‘Kansas City’ and more.. Ilan Kidron (The Potbelleez) – ‘Don’t Hold Back,’ ‘Hello,’ ‘Junkyard’ and more..  Greg Gould, Ella Monnery + more to be announced.. Hosted by: Mobin Master - ‘Show Me Love,’ ‘Get Away with It,’ ‘Lights Out’ and more.. Support by: Andy Van (Madison Avenue // Super Disco Club) and Mark Dynamix It’s no secret that 2020 has been a tumultuous rollercoaster for event promoters.  The Synthony tour was due to be announced just days before New Zealand went into Level 4 lockdown and the future of the tour all of a sudden became awfully uncertain.  Shows across Australia, Asia, and the U.S were in the pipeline for 2020.  Months of preparation and negotiations with artists, venues and sponsors were all dashed and the team behind Synthony, had to rebuild the program all over again.   ___________________________________________________________ Duco Events Promoter Rachael Carroll says she’s excited to bring the show back to Australia and return to Brisbane a city that loved the first show: “Given the circumstances, it’s amazing to be able to bring this show back to Brisbane. We dipped out toe in the water staging the event at City Hall in 2019 and following great reviews we can’t wait to go bigger and better outdoors at the stunning Riverstage. The show will be run in a government approved, Covid-safe set up at Riverstage. Whilst the venue normally can hold over 9,000 people, tickets will be capped at 4,000 due to capacity restrictions. The Synthony Australian Tour has only been possible thanks to the support of the Restart Investment to Sustain and Expand (RISE) Fund – an Australian Government initiative. “We certainly would not be putting on this show without the RISE funding support from the Australian Government.  This partnership has given us the confidence to invest, take risk and put on events that will see some artists and suppliers secure their first job and income after a very long break in event activity” said Carroll. Eager dance music fans around Brisbane will have one hand in the air and one hand on the mouse, hovering over the ‘Buy Tickets’ button as the tickets are released on: Friday 19th February, 11am AEST.  With a ‘One Night Only’ show and restricted numbers, fans will need to get in quickly to secure their spot. Guests are urged register for the pre-sale at:  www.synthony.com  About Synthony  Founded in 2017 by DJ and producer, Erika Amoore and fellow Kiwi David Elmsly, Synthony sold out its first ever show at the Auckland Town Hall to a packed house and unprecedented reviews.  The show’s creation brought together key New Zealand talent, with Peter Thomas, conductor and music director of the Auckland Symphony Orchestra believing in the unique concept and enlisting the services of Ryan Youens, an arranger with hundreds of professional credits to his name, including film scores for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and The Desolation of Smaug.  After sold-out events at Auckland Town Hall in 2017 and 2018, Duco Events, a major event promoter with a 16-year track-record, purchased the concept with an ambitious long-term vision to expand the event from one city to multiple venues and cities across the globe.  In 2019, they took the show to Brisbane, Australia and also sold out five shows across NZ later that year.  Over six shows, four Orchestras and hundreds of musicians played to over 14,000 fans in 2019.  In 2020, Synthony staged its biggest ever NZ-wide tour, supporting the live music industry’s recovery post COVID19.  Synthony returns to Australia this April for its first outdoor show at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl, Melbourne, followed by Brisbane in May with other Australian cities to be announced, followed by other international markets.   ___________________________________________________________ 2021 DATES & LOCATIONS:  Friday 12th February, TSB Arena, Wellington  Saturday 20th March, Horncastle Arena, Christchurch  Friday 16th April, Sidney Myer Music Bowl, Melbourne Saturday 29th May, Riverstage, Brisbane More Australian dates to be announced…. Soma proudly presents a label debut from one of electronic music’s most influential figures, Keith Tucker aka Optic Nerve. With a detailed discography on some of Techno & Electro’s most well-respected labels, stretching back to the 80s & 90s either via solo projects or as part of genre defining group AUX 88, Tucker has been at the forefront of the Detroit scene since his beginnings. Considered by many to be the blueprint for modern day Techno/Electro Tucker is one of the scene’s most hard-working artists devoting almost 30 years to his career as an electronic artist.  Appearing on Soma sub label, Avoidant, at the end of 2020 as DJ K-1, the opportunity to continue working together with his Optic Nerve pseudonym arose. Resulting in Soma’s 600th release, the Far Away EP. Combined with Scottish based artist Kyle Irvine’s unique Sci-Fi based artwork, Tucker has delivered a unique and modern-day outlook on his famed Detroit Techno/Electro sound.  Title track Far Away is a classic take on the seminal Detroit sound. Distant and drifting vocals glide across sweeping textures and tripped out synth sequences, glued together by deep emotive strings. Channel Z captures the classic Optic Nerve sound perfectly; pure machine funk soaked in harmonic atmospheres. The ominous Techno Programming has a darker, edgier tone to the previous tracks but by no means less emotive. A funked up, warped baseline sets the tone backed by jacked up drums as the track exudes pure attitude. Fellow Detroit based artist Strand drops a remix of Techno Programming to close out the EP. Their version leans on more melancholic elements but retains the feel and demeanour of the original.
