What is your name and role within the band?
Mitchell Hewlett. I’m the singer/guitarist and main songwriter.
How did you start?
Bassist Josh Hartranft and myself are long time friends and I found an opportunity in 2013 to move out to a farmhouse in the middle of nowhere and finally get a project going with him.
Where are you based?
Please give an example of your music writing process?
It is mostly taking my sound doodles and random ideas and bringing them to the band to put their touches on. A lot of the time the only reason a song of mine gets finished is because the band buttons it up.
What are you working on right now?
We are preparing to release our debut album ‘Reoccurring Dream Theme’ on Kansas City record label The Record Machine this summer (2017) and do some touring to support the release. We just finished a live video we will be putting out with the album as well.
What is your gear setup?
Bass and drums rhythm section. I play more of rhythm guitar while sometimes taking the lead and lead guitarist Matt Pelsma is a pedal mastermind and fills in everything in between.
What do you like to do outside of music and does it affect your music?
My life is inundated with music.I play drums in 2 other projects, completely manage Westerners, and work for a production company that puts on concerts while also sitting in at the studio when I can. I enjoy graphic design/drawing and filling my time in various ways when I don’t have to take care of business.
How would you describe your music genre?
Self identified as Garage-a-delic indie rock.
Psychedelic Garage Rock music with tips of the hat to alternative indie rock/pop of decades past.
Do you know any music theory?
Me? Definitely not. Our drummer Gerardo Rojas and guitarist Matt Pelsma are both trained musicians. I enjoy having that knowledge in the band but I prefer to write music in a naive fashion because I feel like it keeps attention on the song and not the players. I love having extremely talented band mates who know when to play to the song.
What are your plans for the future?
Planning on touring to the east coast in September and working on having an EP finished by the end of the year. I’ve got several random projects for the band Id like to attempt as well, including a live cassette release.
How did you get into music?
As a teenager I found myself completely absorbed in hardcore music. I’ve always had other interests outside of it, but the bands and friends I played with and met in the beginning was definitely the fan behind the flame. Playing shows as a 16 year old with all of your friends, screaming fuck you at the top of your lungs, and enjoying a community of people who share the same passion as you do was an eye opener.
What are you listening to at the moment?
I’ve been checking out a ton of great bands while setting up these touring dates, lately. Always great to sit back and listen to all the incredible music out there that is going unnoticed.
Who are your top 5 influences and icons?
Dr Dog, My Morning Jacket, Iggy Pop, David Bowie, The Beatles… This list could honestly never end.
When are you playing next?
We’ve got about 25 shows planned out for this summer (2017). Very excited to get out and visit our friends from around the country.
